june 2024 book wrap up
Funny Story by Emily Henry ☆☆☆☆☆
Peaches & Honey by R. Raeta ☆☆☆☆☆
Bartleby, the Scrivener by Herman Melville ☆☆☆
One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig (reread)
I had a few exams and the semester was ending, so I haven't read much. I'm planning to read a lot this summer though! I read Emily Henry's Funny Story and Beach Read! I liked Funny Story better! An immediate favorite for sure! It just hit me really hard, very unexpectedly. Funny how Happy Place hit my friend very hard, and I had the same experience with Funny Story. Loved both of the characters and loved to see them fall in love! Beach Read was still very good! I loved it! It was very millennial (I say that with the most love).
I also read Peaches & Honey by R. Reata! Also loved it! It's everything I love about fantasy! I realize I might not enjoy most trending fantasy/romantasy books because they are all very similar. I enjoy stuff that is more original? A bit different? Anyway… for anybody who loves subtle fantasy and historical stuff with a cute romance in the background, they should check it out! Also, it's quite short! It's a little treat! I kind of love how not grand it is. It's not trying to be epic even though the story has potential to be stretched out to a five-book, 500-page series. Can't wait to read the second part!
Speaking of my favorite fantasy, I reread One Dark Window and now I'm one-third into The Twisted Crowns. I loved it so much I had to reread it. AND I NEVER REREAD BOOKS. I can't name one book I've reread. I don't do that, so you can see how obsessed I am. Anyway, I am rereading them in Polish (my native language) and the translation… kind of sucks, kind of ruined the book. Also… SO MANY MISTAKES. I started taking photos of all of them, and I might be sending an email to the publisher because this is sick and twisted. I didn't pay for physical copies just to have them filled with mistakes. Maybe I'm being dramatic, but they really pissed me off because the story is so good and so beautifully written, and they are ruining it!
In June, I also was reading The Serpent and the Wings of the Night, got pissed off 130 pages in when the main girl thought the main guy could probably fuck real good (meanwhile she is terrified of him and won't trust him. Don't piss me off). I'll finish it soon though… I hate DNF-ing books.
Oh, and here as a little treat, given we are halfway into the year, I made a silly little tier list with everything I've read so far!

Hello everyone and welcome to the end of the week! Am I glad it’s Friday? 😅 Yes. The answer is YES 😂 Here’s the second part of my book haul that I picked up when @keeperofpages and I went book shopping before Christmas. I loved Maggie Shipstead’s novel Great Circle when I read it last year so was delighted to come across this, her short story collection, You Have A Friend In 10A. “Diving into eclectic and vivid settings, from an Olympic village to a deathbed in Paris to a Pacific atoll, and illuminating a cast of unforgettable characters, Shipstead traverses the ordinary and extraordinary with cunning, compassion and wit.” Next up, My Soul Twin. This was a must buy as @keeperofpages and I read and loved The Eighth Life. Were going to be reading this as a buddy read together. It’s described as “a modern day Wuthering Heights - two families, one devastating secret, and an epic story of forbidden love.” Finally, Our Share Of Night which I have already read as a buddy read with @keeperofpages and absolutely loved. A review will be coming (at some point 😂) but it was a 5 star read for both of us! I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #ohlookmorebooks #bookhaulofdreams #bookshoppingwithmyfavorites #youhaveafriendin10a #maggieshipstead #ourshareofnight #marianaenríquez #translatedbooks📚 #buddyreadswithjanel #lovingbookslovinglife #insatiablebookworm https://www.instagram.com/p/CpVnGvFLRwN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Our story begins with our mothers'- for when she is conceived, one half of us is already present in her. Metaphorically, yes? But let's come down to the bare bones. A girl is born with all the eggs she will ever have- we are a part of our mothers long before we become an idea, a desire, a wish. I've avoided picking this book for the longest time; I am known to cry copiously, especially at emotionally charged words. And an ode to a dead mother who ends her life at 51 years was certainly going to have me weep buckets. It didn't. Handke writes about his mother seven weeks after her death-in parts to make sense of this loss & to capture the entirety of 'her'. So he begins- she as a child, as a young woman learning the vocabulary of this world, a wife, a mother, an essential but ignored limb of the society, a matron who finds herself (better late than never) to only realise just how late that is & then… I didn't know there were controversies around Handke. This work, though, is just a testimony to love felt and experienced. This pithy German book, mere 78 pages, is held down by the beauty of the prose. Grief has words and more than wrenching your heart out- they wipe the muck off our vision. If sadness were words- A Sorrow Beyond Dreams would be those. And what it really says is… It's already too late, it's already too less. Go tell your mother you love her. #peterhandke #asorrowbeyonddreams #germanbooks #pushkinpress #nobelprizeliterature #austrianliterature #translatedliterature #translatedbooks #delhibookstagrammer #indianreaders #bookstagramindia #addictedtobooks #coffeeandbooks #bookishthoughts #neverwithoutabook #nonfictionreads #nevernotreading #januaryreads #2023readingchallenge #indianbookstagrammer #mumbaibookstagram (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn8b4EzLM6q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

2023 - Week 21 - A book by an Asian diaspora author
My Pick: Highway with Green Apples - Bae Suah
Ever have an quarter-life crisis? The main character in Highway with Green Apples has you covered. It’s very relatable if you have ever questioned everything in your life and culture.
My Rating: 3 out of 5

These employees are sleeping on the job! The Employees by Olga Ravn is a short novel comprised of a hundred brief testimonies from both human & humanoid workers on a spaceship. The subject of each testimony is not named and is not identified at first as human or humanoid. You build up that knowledge as you read on & pick up on things. This is less a science fiction novel & more a book about what it means to be a human & what experiences & senses make up a human. There is a lot of sensory descriptions (some bordering on the grotesque - like talk about pores & things in them *shudder*). This read almost like a fever dream & I'd recommend reading it in one sitting if possible. * #funaekreads #funaekbooks #instabooks #instareads #pugsandbooks #bookreview #sciencefiction #booksintranslation #translatedfiction #translatedbook https://www.instagram.com/p/COL36iWrIty/?igshid=15dtzy2eeli5r

As I begin to write this, I'm trying to pin down what this story is about- India's first lady doctor or child marriage? Does it catch the Indian women emancipation movement in its nascent stages or capturing the downfall of the last nawab of Awadh is its aim?  It's all this. Which is part of its charm & also the reason why it overpowers you. But let's start from the beginning.  Krishnosundor & his family leave their village with a promise of better days but life sells them off as plantation slaves. His sister, Bhubonmoni, his two daughters & his wife- their lives form the crux of this story. The first 150 pages pulled me in; the story took off immediately but I found myself emotionally overwhelmed. I asked @pepperandpetals the one who loved this book and gifted it to me, if things get better. She encouraged me to continue reading & I am glad I listened to her.  The story is well-researched & apart from the protagonists there are others who held my interest- I mean, Rabindranath Tagore is practising his poetry & Kadambini Ganguly is studying to be a doctor here. The tapestry is rich with memorable characters, sewn with the silk of the Indian history.  @arunavasinha has done a fantastic job with the translation and I wish @debarati.mukhopadhyay more success with her book. The Indian historical fiction scene is richer because of her work.   Trigger warnings: Child marriage, rape, gender & caste issues.  #chroniclesoflostdaughters #bengalitranslatedliterature #debaratimukhopadhyay #delhibookstafam #delhibookstagrammer #indianbooks #historicalfiction #translatedbooks #indianreader #indianbookstagrammer #bookstagraminda #translatedliterature #alwaysreading #bookblogger #bookishthoughts #bookdragon #2023readingchallenge #readingchallenge2023 #januaryreads #delhireaders (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnoYS4Vr1MC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Q: what's a book that you're super excited to read in 2021? Of course, i'd love to read every single book on my tbr in 2021, but i think that's impossible! In short, The Book Jumper, Six of Crows, and The Lunar Chronicles series are pretty high up. I guess this is my new theme now? The last post i did with a very fairytale-esque theme went over pretty well, so i guess i'll stick with it 😂😅 Love me some fantasy themed pictures! I think i'm out of my reading slump? I read almost all day yesterday and ✨almost✨ finished the second RWBY book, hoping to actually finish it today! Then maybe i'll continue in Tweet Cute. Or Peter Pan dangit, i've missed, like, a week of reading it and I need to because it's for a book club 😅 Have a great day! Reach out to a friend! Shine on! . . . .
