Hello everyone and welcome to the end of the week! Am I glad it’s Friday? 😅 Yes. The answer is YES 😂 Here’s the second part of my book haul that I picked up when @keeperofpages and I went book shopping before Christmas. I loved Maggie Shipstead’s novel Great Circle when I read it last year so was delighted to come across this, her short story collection, You Have A Friend In 10A. “Diving into eclectic and vivid settings, from an Olympic village to a deathbed in Paris to a Pacific atoll, and illuminating a cast of unforgettable characters, Shipstead traverses the ordinary and extraordinary with cunning, compassion and wit.” Next up, My Soul Twin. This was a must buy as @keeperofpages and I read and loved The Eighth Life. We’re going to be reading this as a buddy read together. It’s described as “a modern day Wuthering Heights - two families, one devastating secret, and an epic story of forbidden love.” Finally, Our Share Of Night which I have already read as a buddy read with @keeperofpages and absolutely loved. A review will be coming (at some point 😂) but it was a 5 star read for both of us! I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #ohlookmorebooks #bookhaulofdreams #bookshoppingwithmyfavorites #youhaveafriendin10a #maggieshipstead #ourshareofnight #marianaenríquez #translatedbooks📚 #buddyreadswithjanel #lovingbookslovinglife #insatiablebookworm https://www.instagram.com/p/CpVnGvFLRwN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

2023 - Week 21 - A book by an Asian diaspora author
My Pick: Highway with Green Apples - Bae Suah
Ever have an quarter-life crisis? The main character in Highway with Green Apples has you covered. It’s very relatable if you have ever questioned everything in your life and culture.
My Rating: 3 out of 5

These employees are sleeping on the job! The Employees by Olga Ravn is a short novel comprised of a hundred brief testimonies from both human & humanoid workers on a spaceship. The subject of each testimony is not named and is not identified at first as human or humanoid. You build up that knowledge as you read on & pick up on things. This is less a science fiction novel & more a book about what it means to be a human & what experiences & senses make up a human. There is a lot of sensory descriptions (some bordering on the grotesque - like talk about pores & things in them *shudder*). This read almost like a fever dream & I'd recommend reading it in one sitting if possible. * #funaekreads #funaekbooks #instabooks #instareads #pugsandbooks #bookreview #sciencefiction #booksintranslation #translatedfiction #translatedbook https://www.instagram.com/p/COL36iWrIty/?igshid=15dtzy2eeli5r

Q: what's a book that you're super excited to read in 2021? Of course, i'd love to read every single book on my tbr in 2021, but i think that's impossible! In short, The Book Jumper, Six of Crows, and The Lunar Chronicles series are pretty high up. I guess this is my new theme now? The last post i did with a very fairytale-esque theme went over pretty well, so i guess i'll stick with it 😂😅 Love me some fantasy themed pictures! I think i'm out of my reading slump? I read almost all day yesterday and ✨almost✨ finished the second RWBY book, hoping to actually finish it today! Then maybe i'll continue in Tweet Cute. Or Peter Pan dangit, i've missed, like, a week of reading it and I need to because it's for a book club 😅 Have a great day! Reach out to a friend! Shine on! . . . . SINOPSIS
Kota dikepung arwah?
Yaaay…!!! :) Buku-buku di seri ini:
1. The Screaming Staircase (Undakan Menjerit)
2. The Whispering Skull (Tengkorak Berbisik)
3. The Hollow Boy (Pemuda Berongga)
4. The Creeping Shadow (Bayangan Mengendap)
5. The Empty Grave

Book 100 of 2021. Here lies my 100th read of the year. 🎉❤️🎉❤️🎉❤️🎉❤️🎉 After much deliberation and some low-key worrying, I finally picked my 100th read. What better than Ray for my 100th read? My 100th read in Ray's 100th Year. Perfect! Serendipitous! Feluda and Topshe and Jatayu are more than characters, they are people we know, people we grew up with, people we feel safe with. Their adventures, banter, sleuthing, travels and camaraderie are alllll things we love and appreciate. A Bengali child is handed these stories as heirlooms. They are precious to us. Integral to our collective memories. A part and parcel of the Bengali way of life. I grew up hearing of this super sleuth but could only read them in my mid-twenties when I found translations of these classic tales. I have since then read everything Ray's ever written a few times over. For that and evermore, I will always be infinitely grateful to translators and the invaluable work they do. They bring these stories to those who wouldn't be able to access it without their help. Because I cannot imagine my life without Feluda and his magajastra. ❤️ PS: If you haven't read Ray yet...what are you waiting for?! Pick up his glorious short stories instead of watching the uber stylised take on Netflix. . . . #whimsybookworm2021reads #booksbooksbooks #bibliophile #Feluda #SatyajitRay #Ray #shortstory #modernclassics #favourites #bookreader #bookrecommendations #bookreviews #bookblogger #booksmakemehappy #goodreads #booknerdigans #translatedbooks #translated #litwithindianlit (at West Bengal) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRKXPRLJTBV/?utm_medium=tumblr

Whoa. Earthlings by Sayaka Murata was a bizarre & disturbing trip. I enjoyed Murata's Convenience Store Woman a couple years ago, but if you thought that was weird prepare for that times a hundred. All the trigger warnings. This can get over the top. I think I prefer a more nuanced & subtle approach, but this certainly had me reading late into the night. * #funaekreads #funaekbooks #instabooks #instareads #pugsandbooks #bookreview #booksintranslation #translatedfiction #translatedbook https://www.instagram.com/p/COqdp8MLoOi/?igshid=1830305db6ive

I thoroughly enjoyed Izumi Suzuki’s irrelavent sci-fi cyberpunk shorts. Although a few of them were a little bland, the concept as a whole was incredibly fun. Suzuki plays on traditional sexuality, often mixing the roles and creating relationships that feel unbalanced compared to other science-fiction pieces. It’s also the unique selling-point of Terminal Boredom – a penchant for the unexpected. . The first English-language publication of the work of Izumi Suzuki, a legend of Japanese science fiction and a countercultural icon. . Izumi Suzuki was born in 1949. After dropping out of high school, she worked in a factory before finding success and infamy as a model and actress. Her acting credits include both pink films and classics of 1970s Japanese cinema. When the father of her children, jazz musician Kaoru Abe, died of an overdose, Suzuki’s creative output went into hyperdrive, and she began producing irreverent and punky short fiction, novels and essays. . You can find the full review in my bio. Terminal Boredom s now available from @versobooks and all good booksellers. . . . #IzumiSuzuki #TerminalBoredom #Verso #Japanese #JapaneseLiterature #SciFi #Sciencefiction #Cyberpunk #NobuyoshiAraki #bookstagram #bookreview #books #booklover #bibliophile #womenintranslation #readtheworld #fictionintranslation #translatedbooks #readersofig #translatedlit #bookreviewers #debutfiction #translated #bookaesthetics #bookrecommendation #bookstagramuk #sciencefictionbooks #scifiworld #futurism #dystopia (at Christleton Duck Pond) https://www.instagram.com/p/COyTSLHrQ9v/?igshid=h20c4kb5z7bp
