She had transitioned (she might have used her hush money), and due to her time away, she had to repeat a year and yes, she still worked at Scoops and she still becomes platonic soulmates with Robin. Sandra ends up going to school with her little brothers and platonic soulmate. She ends up joining Hellfire, but does she end up falling for the leader of the group? Maybe. . .

It took a while to get here, but he’s here now, happy in his identity. 

Robin had no idea, for a long time, that he was a dude. It only took Stevie figuring it out about herself for things to click in place for Robin. 

Maybe it was like, destiny or some shit that they worked together that hopeless summer. Maybe they were just supposed to end up drugged out of their minds on that bathroom floor. They’re totally each other's soulmates, and now they’re even closer. 

It’s like they have shared experiences now, each living as both a dude and a chick. They just… got each other. Besides, it’s cool having a gender guru, guide you through your transition. Like, Stevie’s giving him tips on how to talk and walk like a dude, or at least how she used to in highschool, which seemed palatable enough in Hawkins. And Robin gets to teach Stevie stuff too, like the best remedies for periods (because she fucking gets those now, like, without the blood, which is wild), and how bra sizing works because that shit is actually confusing at first. 

It’s also awesome because they totally got to just swap half their wardrobes. Like, Robin had been meaning to get rid of a bunch of those dresses his mom got him for ages, and Stevie can just take them. And Robin got to raid Stevies wardrobe and feel totally euphoric trying on all her old clothes because not only did he look like a guy, he also smelt like one. 

Robin got to teach Stevie how to shave her legs properly, to get them all smooth and shit, and Stevie got to teach Robin how to get his hair sitting so fucking nice in a masculine way. Ferrah Fawcet is a lifesaver, actually. 

Everything about being trans has been awesome so far- like, apart from the fear of smalltown transphobia, but like, the feelings. It’s just been euphoria hit after euphoria hit once he finally opened up and expressed his feelings to Stevie. 

That was a really revealing conversation. And it’s been nice, getting to hide away with Stevie for a little while, figuring themselves out. 

Robin likes to bind, it looks good and feels good, but it’s kind of painful. Which is why living with Stevie feels so good, because he doesn’t have to bind around her to feel validated. He doesn’t feel the need to look or act a certain way around her to pass. 

Things changed when Eddie came over for the first time. 

It’s not like he could just say no when Stevie asked to have Eddie over. He knows they have a thing going on, and they haven’t seen eachother in two weeks, Stevies having withdrawals. It’s just… a new person. Robin hasn’t been a dude around anyone other than Stevie yet. 

He doesn’t want to be a girl again for the afternoon. 

He’s shocked when Eddie walks in, shooting finger guns at him and says, “Hey dude, nice haircut- jeez, it smells good in here, is that a cheese melt?” 

Robin ran a hand through his hair nervously, glancing over at Stevie, who just shrugged before walking over to say hi to Eddie. 

Eddie embraced her, tight, giving her a little kiss on the cheek that had her blushing before turning back to the cheese melt.

“My god, I fucking love cheese melts.” 

“You can have it.” Stevie offered. 

“You’re the best thing that ever happened to me, babe.” He muttered, stuffing his face full before moving to the fridge to make a replacement cheese melt, “I haven't eaten all day, and work was crazy busy today. Anyway, what are you nerds up to?”

“Just hanging out.” Stevie muttered. 

“Waiting around for me?” He grinned up at her, biting into his sandwich. 

Stevie rolled her eyes and shrugged, “We were… actually just fucking around a bit. Trying out some makeup on me… and… stuff.” 

“Oh, stuff huh?” He smirked, whacking the cheese sandwich on the press. 

“Yeah, stuff.” Stevie smiled, glancing over at Robin. 

Eddie looked over to him, “So….” He said, giving him a once over, “Is this like a lesbian phase thing, or are you a dude?” 

“Ed’s!” Stevie scolded. 

“You got a problem, Munson?” 

“Obviously not.” He scoffed, pointing a thumb over at Stevie before continuing to munch on his cheese melt, “I’m head over heels for her and you think I have a problem with transsexuals? Dude, my uncle was like, the first trans dude in Hawkins, I think.” 

“What?” Stevie and Robin both asked in sync. 

He shrugged, turning the sandwich press off before it burnt the bread, “Well, maybe not. But as far as he’s concerned, you know? Why do you think he doesn’t give a shit about me and Stevie- oh, I know how to draw beards on real good.”

“Why do you know that?” Stevie asked. 

“I wanted to look like an adult when I was ten so I could run away and get a job.” Eddie said so nonchalant, “My dad was a dick and said I couldn’t be gay and have a good future. Total arsehole. Look at me now, dad, bisexual and a full time drug dealer. Fuck. you.” 

Robin grinned, “Can you teach me the beard thing?” 

“Sure thing, man.” He smiled, cutting the fresh cheese melt up for Stevie and plating it for her, “So does this mean you’re like, straight now, or?” 

Robin froze, looking over to Stevie, who was also struck with a baffled expression as Eddie pottered around the kitchen, unbeknownst to their panic. 

“Fuck, I’m straight!” He shouted, and Stevie burst out laughing.

maybe it's because i've been working on my own transfem stevie fic for ages now and so i have my own very specific headcanons, but going through the tag is truly . it's not the greatest experience. for me. there are surface level reasons for this and also far more insidious reasons.

like there is the matter of me not really shipping steddie or harringrove. this is surface level. i just don't like either of their characters and i find the fans of the ships and those characters annoying. this is life in fandom. it means that most of the time, if i want to read a fic about stevie, i must also suffer reading about eddie or billy, neither of whom i care about. again, such is life. it's fine. ship what you want.

but. but. i do not like how transfem stevie gets written a lot of the time either. whether it's in posts or fics. there's a lot of ideas ppl spout that they have not actually examined. many of which feature transphobia/transmisogyny. and i have to see them. and it sucks.

bc. like. why do so many ppl write stevie's bf du jour as gay. like this is often specified. eddie is a gay man who has just found out that his boyfriend wants to be a woman. wow how does eddie feel about that? i dont care. thats what a lot of fics are about tho. yay. eddie isn't even gay, its just a popular headcanon. altho some ppl believe in it so much they've convinced themselves there are hints of it in canon. there isn't. there are some ppl out there who do feel at odds with transfem stevie and eddie dating bc they believe so strongly in gay eddie. which is fine. eddie can be bi. or straight. i think a bi realisation is fun and i think its even more fun when the bi realisation happens in reverse to what is expected. but there are a number of works out there that still insist on eddie calling himself gay. when he has a trans wife. and i do not like that. it feels invalidating to stevie's identity as a trans woman. it's also. it's not about stevie. it's about how her boyfriend feels about his partner transitioning. most of the time.

i also do not like so many ppl feeling the need to explain why stevie and robin aren't dating in this au. like. there's a few reasons why so many of those posts rub me the wrong way. there's some that are obvious. i distinctly remember a post that posited a PANSEXUAL robin and stevie attempting to have casual sex. first off. there's zero need to specify a pansexual robin. it can just be regular old lesbian robin bc lesbians are attracted to women and. forgive me stating the obvious here but. trans women are women.

that's just one post. but there are MANY that state that robin and stevie do not and will never date bc it is "disgusting". that is often the word used. disgusting. it's meant to be funny perhaps? some joke about stevie and robin being sisters and incest is gross. okay. well they aren't sisters. personal headcanon time but i dont think they see themselves as siblings, canonverse or otherwise. i think they're just friends. and i dont like seeing all these posts saying that kissing, having sex with, or dating a trans woman is "disgusting". it upsets me. more than once ive seen robin being upset with/at?? stevie for being attractive to her and still somehow unavailable to her. bc ? she knows that she does some gross/embarrassing thing? they know each other too well? so they can obviously never date. which is. honestly it's just confusing. do you think couples dont know the other farts? that they don't know each other? but again the image invoked is that being with a trans woman would be gross or embarrassing. that's not a fun thing to hear about.

sometimes the reason given is that they've known each other too long. they spent so much time only thinking of each other as friends that it's weird to think about the other in a romantic light. okay that can happen. but again this is usually accompanied with robin being like. kinda mad at stevie for being hot as a woman. so she's attracted to her? but not bc she knows her gross habits too well. but maybe if she had met her now, and not before she transitioned, then they may have gotten together. so the fact that robin knew her as a man is putting her off dating her? wow. that has some implications. i've seen many reasons as to why stevie and robin can't date, except really the most important one: that they don't want to. they're happier just being friends. it never occurred to them to start dating each other bc they're happy with the way they're relationship is. but that rarely comes up. the fact that it would be gross comes up far more often.

you don't have to write about stevie and robin dating. or having sex. or being anything other than friends if you just want them to be friends. seeing this same idea repeated over and over again, that it would be gross for them to be together, just makes it feel like you are overcompensating. like maybe you do believe they could date and be very happy, which actually would be fine. it's a niche au and has very little to do with canon so i don't think it means that you secretly want stobin to date in canon. but honestly? the way ppl speak against stobin dating in this sort of au implies that they are still primarily thinking of canon steve. in a transfem stevie au. which i think colours the way they talk about stevie's relationships, not just with robin but also with other characters. i think they are thinking of canon steve pretending to be a trans woman. which is. well, do i need to say it?

i also can't believe i need to say this but ppl who want to ship a lesbian and a man together will just do that. they already don't care. why would they jump through those hoops of genderbending a male character when they could just write what they want to write? no one is stopping them. you can post whatever you want on ao3, for better or worse, and if you actually delved into the tag you would see that the way transfem (or even cisfem) stobin is written is very different from canon stobin. there are completely different kinks going on. it's as asinine as believing that men will dress up as women to attack women in bathrooms, imo. like. they don't need to do all that, they can just attack women in bathrooms. and they often do. that thought might be too harsh but i do believe it's the same sort of sentiment.

i think that's sort of the crux of my issue with a lot of transfem stevie content. the idea of canon steve is too forefront in her creation. she is a woman but still male enough to date a gay man and also still male enough to not date a lesbian. and it's not about her. it's not about stevie. it's upsetting. i don't like it. i think transfem stevie deserves better.

I feel like you will understand some very specific gripe I have with a few Steddie fics.

1. When people take the Stobin bathroom scene and make it about Eddie. It makes me want to tear my hair out. The whole perfect thing about the bathroom scene is the Steve is into Robin, tells her, and then reacts in the best way possible when Robin tells him that she’s a lesbian and therefore can’t be attracted to him. And instead of being an asshole, Steve immediately pivots to making Robin feel accepted in his goofy way. I hate it when people rewrite it to be Eddie that Steve is confessing about :(

2. When Steve is genderbent but only so Eddie can be straight and Steve can be a self-insert. Like if Steve was always a girl, Robin would absolutely have been obsessed with girlSteve over Tammy and Steve had a crush on Robin in canon like in point one, so why wouldn’t they be dating?? I could understand if the authors wrote it that Stobin tried to date, but figured out they were better as friends, but usually Robin is almost totally forgotten in fics like that.

3. This is kinda like point 2, but when Steve is trans fem in fics just so Eddie has a girlfriend again. My favorite trans fem Steve fic is one where Robin is figuring out that she has a crush on Steve while Steve is figuring out that his gender is different, and is honestly more nonbinary than trans fem in the but it’s just so good in my opinion. It doesn’t make sense when people fuck with Steve’s gender but leave his relationship with Robin the same? It just makes no sense in my brain.

anyone making the bathroom scene about characters other than robin are not seeing heaven. that is a stobin moment, and that is robin’s coming out. (i also just don’t see the point in it!!! that’s the way she would come out not anybody else. just be creative!!! that’s the point of fanfiction!!!)

i think with stevie, what’s happening is that people are deathly afraid of getting accused of shipping stobin, so run in the opposite direction when it comes to transfem, or genderbent steve. i mean, steve in canon had a crush on robin, was and/or is (depending on how you interpret it) attracted to robin. and if stevie’s around, i don’t see why robin wouldn’t find her hot, or want to date her etc.

also, this is kind of a different complaint, but so much transfem stevie content is literally just about her gay boyfriend (it is always stressed that he is gay and has never been attracted to women), and i hate it lol. i’m here for HER

ik i said i was neutral ab the transfem stevie hc but it turns out i have a lot of deep rooted issues with it, all extremely personal, and realizing it and talking about it with someone who also feels the same made me have a very cathartic (and mentally draining) cry

idk if its just people taking an mlm ship and changing it thats making me upset, or if its bc im so attached to steve and see him as an extension of myself (a trans man that has no intention or desire to leave that binary) that people changing him into something else feels like something's being ripped away from me.

ik these are 100% my own issues to work through. i have a voice in the back of my head that repeats "what's so wrong about them just being men?" when i think about different variations of steddie that people have and im pretty sure it stems from my trans realization happening during the height of tumblr's "kill all men" phase of 2015 and being terrified to come out on my own blog when most of my mutuals at the time were girls and lesbians who were all very quickly leaning into radfem territory.

it's frustrating that transfem stevie is a squick and that I'M the one being weird about when there's nothing to be weirded out by in the first place.

so she posts a tiktok or something with the tweet in the corner like 'SHIT why didn't anyone TELL ME' and there's like a second of her running into the living room where stevies just sat chilling, reading a book or smth, and then eddie's like 'STEPH did you know TRANS WOMEN DONT DATE EACH OTHER??' and stevie doesn't even look up from her book she's just like 'oh damn, wish we knew that before the wedding. this is pretty embarrassing.'

GOD TOUGH ONE. probably the never ending loyalty between them, how much love exists between them. i also love how each of them have their flaws and they love each other despite it all. i love their understanding towards each other and their openness and COMMUNICATION dammit. what don’t i love about them really….

eddie is in no fucking way into women nor is he cisgender. crimes!!!!! i also don’t see steve as fully gay, he’s so bi. not a fan of lesbian steddie either. or transfem steve. i like the content that comes from it in an aesthetically pleasing way (not in a fetishizing women way i promise) but it’s not For Me exactly. i hope that makes sense! i also didn’t answer this question exactly right but WHATEVER! it’s fine

Does genderswapping characters to female count as femslash (ie, fem!Steddie or Lesbian!Mike Wheeler)?

Yes, but it’s worth considering why you choose to do this instead of writing characters who are women in canon. Sometimes it’s for a reason that very much fits the spirit of the event (genuinely reading a character as trans or wanting to explore what a relationship would look like if the characters are women). Other times, it can be used to avoid reading deeper into female characters and their rich inner lives.

The femslash gap is a well-documented phenomenon. The reasons for this are complex, and there is not enough research to tie it to one particular thing. What is clear is fandom’s tendency to explore male characters in more deep and intricate ways that it will with women. Femslash events are an intentional act of disruption against these biases.

If you are creating a genderswap for this event, please take a moment to consider your reasons for doing so and make sure they are in the spirit of this event. As the event’s moderator I will include genderswap creations with the assumption that their contributors are acting in good faith.

TLDR: Transfem readings of characters who are cis men in the show are always fine. Genderswaps are usually fine, but please reflect a bit and make sure you're not doing it to avoid exploring female characters and their relationships with each other.
