- In my writing, I mainly focus on oneshots (both romantic and platonic) of Pokémon, and Wings of Fire/WoF.

Note: I am a multi-shipper, and almost every ship is valid. However, I am by NO MEANS a proshipper. I don't support Pedo, Incest, toxic relationships, or anything like that. We do not promote that here. The only good representation of proships (in my opinion) is to show what is wrong, and how to deal with that situation. Anyway, this is also to explore the RainWing tribe during Darkstalker's time, as we still barely know anything even with the guide. - Umbreon X Espeon X Sylveon book - (All three are male. This is inspired by the vibes from the song Solider, Poet, King by The Oh Hellos. The romance will be a slow burn if I decide to keep that in, and not make it all about the action.)

(eu)jean, a drabble for the move Gattaca - it's about a character from the movie being trans, and I wanted to use that to tie into and explore the movie's themes of identity and self-transformation in a way that was different from but complimentary with how the movie did it. Judging from the comments I got, I was quite sucessful, with one commenter even saying that that headcanon would be in the back of her head every time she watched the movie. (This answer is probably longer than the fic itself /lh)

I’ve debated making a fic rec list since I read...a lot of fanfiction, so here you go. I’ve organized it by fandom, starting with the oldest fandoms I’ve read (unfortunately, Harry Potter is the oldest). Each fic has a short description by me, a rating, and link. Will also be pinning this/updating it in the future. Hope y’all have fun looking at all the fics!:

Harry Potter: The Firebird Trilogy, Book 1, Book 2, & Book 3 by Darth Marrs (FFN): A serious, mature AU of Harry Potter that is vastly different from the canon we know. Harry/Harem. 10/10, fandom-defining story that will make you cry. Harry Potter and the Four Founders by Darth Marrs (FFN): Harry is the heir of the four founders. Harry/Harem, 9/10. (The rest of the stories in the series are also good, but imo they do not compare to the original, so there’s that.) Genius Fratris by a lonelysock (FFN, but is also on AO3): A WBWL story where Harry is older than in canon. No bashing of the Potters, with realistic depictions of family life and how being older affects Harry’s personality and willingness to fight Voldemort. Still currently a WIP. 9/10. Blood and Chocolate by Lady Lemon Drop (FFN): Harry finds out he is becoming a vampire at the end of OotP. Some changes are made to canon, like Sirius surviving, the timeline is a little wonky...and it’s abandoned. But, it’s a Harry/Ginny story I give a 9/10. Vanteeria Domestica by andrea_readwolf (AO3): A creature!Harry AU meets a Harry/Harem!AU, with beautiful relationship dynamics that do a good job at reflecting how complex it is to be in a poly relationship. Harry/Harem, 9/10. Forget-Me-Not by Lomonaaeren (FFN, but is also on AO3): Dumbledore accidentally casts a forgetfulness spell a little too powerful on Harry, leading to him basically being ignored by everyone. Harry/Theodore Nott, 9/10. The Commoner Queen by Pilargirl (FFN): A royalty AU where Harry is the prince of magical Britain and Ginny Weasley has caught his eye. Harry/Ginny, 9/10. The Bonds of Blood by Darth Marrs (FFN): A Harry/Ginny soulbond story that takes a serious look at what a soulbond would really look like between two children. Harry/Ginny. 8/10.

PJO: From Amidst the Darkness and At the End of the Tunnel by Mrs.PercyJackson3 (FFN): A mortal AU where Poseidon only finds out about Percy after a car crash kills Sally and leaves Percy blind. 10/10 the traces of life with you by shadowtraveled (AO3): God!Percy falls in love with Luke, four times over. Lukercy, 10/10, ship-defining story. Maybe I was sent to bring you home by percy in panties (AO3): Another Lukercy, ship-defining story featuring reincarnation, 10/10. The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by midnightinjapan (FFN): Nico’s social-avoidance tendencies come back to haunt him. Percy/Nico, 9/10.

Twilight: The Movement of the Earth and The Fire of the Sun by audreyii-fic (FFN): In which Jacob imprints on Bella in New Moon. 10/10, this is a fandom-defining duology and should be read by everyone if they’re a fan of Twilight. All the Ways You Know Me by FlamingMaple (FFN): Jacob and Bella get together in New Moon, except Jacob is killed by Victoria and Bella is left to raise their baby, who she is still pregnant with. Enter Edward back onto the scene. Edward/Bella, 9/10.

Teen Wolf: To Accidentally Be by mylegsaremine (AO3): Scott and Isaac get together...except, neither of them have been told that beta, male werewolves can get pregnant, and they haven’t exactly been practicing safe sex. Like, at all. Mpreg ensues. 10/10, was one of the first fics I read for this fandom. A Pox on Hope by spqr (AO3): Fem!Stiles gets bitten by a vampire while trying to investigate a case and decides to call up Peter to help. Peter/Stiles, 10/10. Keep It Together by ravingrevolution (AO3): Stiles needs the Pack’s help after someone steals something from him. Derek/Stiles, 9/10. a collapsing star with tunnel vision by CerinityKS (AO3): Theo is dying...and has feelings for Scott. Naturally, this means he isn’t going to tell Scott either of those things. Sceo, 8/10. Calling a Spade a Spade by RhysLahey (AO3): Isaac comes back to Beacon Hills. The Princess Bride references ensue. Scisaac, 8/10.

Star Trek (AOS): Strange Courage by Joules Mer (AO3): A Bones/Kirk AU series that begins post-ST:ID, then involves into something more. Does have mpreg in it, but not in the way you’d usually expect. 10/10. the sum of a man by phalangine (AO3): Kirk is ordered to get married by the brass, so he does...to Bones. The marriage isn’t real, until it is. 10/10, had me rolling in bed laughing when I first read it. Warning Labels (are meant to be ignored) and Find Me in the Ashes by drmcbones (AO3): A Bones/Kirk soulmate AU where neither of them really want to have a soulmate, yet find out they are each other’s anyways. Extremely good, 9/10. Fly Me to the Moon by Horolojium (AO3): Bones tries to deny his feelings for Kirk while the standard shenanigans occur on the Enterprise, with interesting effects. Bones/Kirk. 9/10.

MCU: The Third Option by Uncertainty_Principle (AO3): Ben and May get divorced before Peter’s parents die, leading to Peter going into foster care after Ben dies with...not so great results. Irondad/spiderson. 10/10, one of my favorites of all time. Pretty Maids Universe by Finny3120 (AO3): A bio irondad/spiderson AU where Tony is siblings with May and raises Peter...and also falls in love with Steve. The portrayals of grief, slow burn, and etc. are some of the best I have ever seen in fanfiction, 10/10, another favorite of all time. built from scraps by peterstank (AO3): Peter survives the Snap instead of Tony, then finds out that Tony is his biological father. Bio irondad/spiderson, enough feels to make even veteran readers of fanfiction cry. 9/10 Silent Screams and Surprising Saviors by normalisoverrated (AO3): A fem!Penny becomes selectively mute after meeting Skip as a kid, but is able to speak as Spider-Woman. Unfortunately/fortunately for her, it does not take long for the Avengers to connect the dots between the two anyways after she gets an internship at Stark Industries. Irondad/spiderdaughter. 9/10 Intern Spider by Emily_F6 (AO3): A fem!Penny becomes an intern at Stark Industries, while still trying to keep her identity as Spidergirl a secret. Irondad/spiderdaughter. 9/10 Revelations by Anonymous (AO3): An Infinity War AU where Thanos doesn’t Snap and everyone survives, leading to Peter and Tony circling around each other in a slow burn. Starker. 10/10

X-Men Movies: The Way Back by Baamon5evr (AO3): A post-First Class AU where Charles finds out he’s pregnant with Erik’s child after the Beach Divorce. And, as the title suggests, follows the events leading to him and Erik getting back together again. Cherik, 9/10, read it in like 4 hours because it was just that good! An Earlier Heaven by Regann (AO3): Another post-First Class mpreg Cherik AU, except in this one Charles becomes pregnant with Jean. A very sweet story, and since it was written before DoFP nobody dies! 9/10, very very good!

Activity over 10 years

The last 10 years in the BBC Sherlock fandom have been tumultuous, but this community persists, with engagement from new fans and continued creative output. To commemorate over a decade of squee, I’ve done another scrape of the fandom’s imprint on the Archive of Our Own and will share some insights from the numbers in these plots. A very late update on my post S4 snapshot from 2018.

Note: This analysis is of completed public fanworks only, about 101000 of the 122000 Sherlock (TV) works available at present. This is to remove the late WIP effect, which adds a bulge to the last few months, and out of respect to creators who wish to have their material reserved for other registered AO3 users.

The works are still coming

Counting the number of works posted per day, we can see the peaks associated with each series airing (in UK and US). After that, the number of works continues fairly evenly, 20-30 per day, plus seasonal peaks. This rate is continuing on without a hint of new canon in sight. So who is posting all this work?

Creator-waves, monthly output

Years ago I started plotting creator waves, basically I group fanwork producers by the year they first posted to the fandom and then count how many of this group are active in later time intervals. This lets us get a sense of how long people are contributing and whether new fans are getting the urge to create. 

This plot of the Sherlock (TV) fanworks on AO3 shows the standard shape of plump participation in the first year of any given set of creators, followed by a slowly thinning tail as they because less active over time. Turnover is natural in fandoms, with most only posting a work or two within a fairly limited amount of time, while a precious few persist for years.  The surprise for me here is that the ratio of new creators is higher in 2020 than it was in 2019. Maybe the excuse of lockdown encouraged more folks to take a turn at creating content. 

Another way to look at the output of fan creators on AO3 is to see the total amount of words being shared across all fanworks. The total has been pretty close to 300-400k words per month since 2018! To get a sense of what that means per work, I also plotted the median number of words per fanwork in these monthly sets. The median in higher in the last year than it had been staying for a while. 

Reader behaviour: Hits & Kudos & Comments

Fan creators are only part of the story. Stats on engagement are a bit trick to interpret, I’ve got some plots here that tell us something about how works have been engaged with over time. 

The obvious first to consider is Hits. Above is the total number of Hits given to works published each month. This is the current totals, not a historical snapshot, so we have a very strong bias  towards early works, what we might call the Classics Effect. Works that have been around longer have had the chance to be seen by more people, and in particular those works that become must-read classics in a fandom, extending their exposure through prominence in top ranked works and recommendations. 

To cut down on the advantage of the classics, we can also consider median hits per work for each month. As most works get a lot attention when they are first posted and then fade out of sight, the median number of hits reflects instead the ratio of readers to creators, basically how many eyeballs are around to look at the latest work, regardless of status. The median plot shows how the hyper-visibility of the few work available before 2012, and then a more steady curve once the fandom had gotten established on the platform after Series 2. Amazingly, the hit rate for the median work was steady through the big bumps in activity with later series, a 1000 hits for median works between 2013 and 2018, followed by a slow decline. I’d expect the 2020 works to continue gaining for a few months yet, but the median is probably 50-60% of what is was when the show was in production.

Kudos counts and medians show a similar story to hits, but there is a dip down around 2013 for kudos reflects the frenzy of productivity that saw the fandom grow during the Series 2 hiatus. Readers were getting spoiled! From the airing of Series 3 (2014) until a year following Series 4 (2018), the median work received an even 60ish kudos and 1000 hits, a niche audience that decreased to 50/750 through 2018-2019. The numbers of 2020 suggest a smaller community of readers again, though these numbers may still rise a bit in the next few months before the median works are forgotten. 

The statistic that tells a different story is Comments. Looking at the total comments counts, there isn’t a drop after Series 3 (2014). Instead, the fandom compensated for changing numbers with more feedback and discussion attached to works. This is reflected in the median comment rate as well, which shows seasonal variation but doesn’t really drop off until 2020.

It’s remarkable that without fresh canon we continue to have new creators contributing to the fandom, and while that may be outpacing the readership somewhat, the standard of engagement has been very high. One could say the fandom is chugging along quite nicely!

What about Tags

So, with all that turnover and shifting population, is there a change in the kinds of works being posted? We can look at tags, all tags and freeform tags, to see if there were any meaningful trends. 

First up, I did a creator-wave like analysis of works just for tags, to see how tags continue to be used after being introduced. Unlike the creators, tags clearly persist for years. After 2015, it looks like the core tag set has been established, with very few tags persisting in usage per  subsequent year.

This graph reports numbers over time that are not proportional to the number of works or creators active. Instead, works on AO3 have been getting more and more tags over the years, with the average steadily growing from 5 in 2011 to 15 in 2020, with freeform tags (not characters or ships) from 2 to 8.

To get a sense of fic and tagging culture changes over time, I counted the most popular NEW tags of each year (wave). Note: this analysis is using exact matches, not the networked associations of tag meanings wrangled into AO3 today, so some things that pop up aren’t new concepts but instead newly popular TAGs for whatever they represent.

A little note from looking across all freeform tags, not just the new ones, we see a curious pattern with regards to two actions: First Kiss and Anal Sex. They appear amongst the most common tags as of 2014, neck in neck for two years, than Anal Sex drops off the top ten in 2016. From there out, First Kiss stays in the top 5 from that point on, while anal sex appears at rank 9 from 2017-2019 and is gone again in 2020. This probably says something about the fandom, somehow.

okay, for the fun meta ask list: 1, 4, and 16, please?

1. Tell us about your current project(s)  – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?

@anjali750 once sent me a sambucky art post and I just went "writing inspiration!!" but if you know me, I take so long writing from my writing inspo tag 😂 but anyways, I was having a tough time dealing with my mental health (that's why I haven't been much on) and I just got this idea from some self care vid on youtube; so the fic's gonna be about Sam's lazy day. I have a few paragraphs in but I'm stumped a bit. What I love about this is, you know, the person who sent me this 😂💓 and also just the idea of Sam taking care of himself because self care also the ending I made at the end.

I have a goal of writing this 100k stucky fic which is just purely from aesthetic. They're the only characters (probably) and someone should stop me from making this end up in death (but if you see my stucky posts in poetbucky, then there's death, ain't gonna be nice). I only got the opening line down because this is purely self indulgent and there's a huge possibility I won't finish/post this. What I love about this is that I'm fueled by spite to write this, it's amazing 😂 also, the fact that when I discovered this ship I told myself I'm not gonna write a fic but here I am.

4. Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like)

You get a list:

We believe, but do we worship?

As a Catholic, I love this. That's it. That's- That's an ugly truth. I wrote this for my previous fandom and I claim I wrote this philosophical sentence every chance I got, it's even quoted in one of my tumblr pages. I just love this, just the naked truth.

War beated the joy out of young boys, young girls, young people, too desperate for basic needs the world was too cruel to offer freely, too harshly. War demanded hard people but instead, they killed the soft ones instead. It’s a truth you should hear, and it’s violent, and here’s the apology.

This is from the first WIP you see up there, like sorry anjali for the angst 😂 this is directly stemmed from a poem in my inspo collection but is also from just militarism as whole, sending in soldiers who have no choice but to join just because they need education or whatnot. I'm not the best source of the thing, but I know it makes me mad and it's just wrong. Don't worry, this paragraph gets resolved.

It’s not that Sam despised the idea of it, in fact, he breathes it in like cocaine, feeling the rush and instant fall of his senses, and maybe it’s not actually drugs to him but maybe something milder, like, a kiss, one that is so slow and soft that it makes him scream at the deprivation, making himself aware of how desperate he just was about touch, literally any sort of touch, but then again, it’s Sam we’re talking about; suppressed and no-nonsense, he couldn’t possibly want something so good like some cliche grand romantic gesture that is too cheesy for its own good, and maybe it’s for the best that he keeps quiet about this want because it’s not like he gets it every day. Fine, he does get it every day and it’s too much it’s hurting like a cavity to his heart.

This still stands as my favorite line I've ever wrote because I was trying to do a new writing style but evidently failed midway, but it's still so good!

“You look lost,” the other man spoke, bringing out a worn out gold cigarette case from his back pocket.

Sam watched him with steady eyes, his face blank of expression. “Perhaps, but no,” he watched as the other man methodically bring out a cigarette.

“Ah,” he murmured. “You have a lighter?”

Sam didn’t nod but he pulled out a cheap lighter from his inside pocket, bringing it closer to the other man’s cigarette which hung in his lips. The other man seemed excited with the way his eyebrows raised, and he came closer as Sam lit the cigarette. Sam seemed more relaxed now, pocketing his lighter as they both leaned against the wall, their shoulders touching. 

“Not my type of scene either,” the man shook his head, his face scrunching up to form a look of disgust and indifference.

The sambuckynat AU, one of the first few fics I did when I was new to the fandom. I have dialogue but it's purely self indulgent and is still in the works. I have the plot and conflict set down but I just don't touch the document this is in anymore so I don't write in it. I love this because, yeah, it's the actual first sambucky idea that I did.

16. Tried anything new with your writing lately? (style, POV, genre, fandom?)

The thing about my writing style is that I have like tens of those, I even named them. I don't know the names anymore though 😂 it depends which writing style fits best for the fic. I have non-ship fics that center with this outspoken writing style that speaks directly to the reader, kinda like Stephen King. What you guys see is not my latest and is actually what is most appropriate.

The last time I tried to change up a style was sweet as candies, cavities to the heart and that failed. It's just I have so much writing styles. Here's a snippet of one them during a tamer scene (the other scenes, it has cussing and just babbling that adds tension):

So, Stark didn't know. Shuri knew, of course she knew; she removed all of HYDRA control in Barnes brain, and saw glimpses of why HYDRA chose to cater to Barnes instead of any other successful experimentation that had on their hands—it may not be on the notes of HYDRA, but it was too obvious that it was almost too susceptible to abuse. Whatever Stark didn’t know immediately became Shuri’s itinerary for tonight; scratch their plans, Shuri knew what hacking she’d be doing tonight.

Shoulders squared and her chest puffed out, Shuri had the grace of a warrior as she eyed down the commotion Stark had stirred up; it looked like a desperate final act of redemption from her eyes, but she knew better to be open to perspective. The sense of desperation that Stark alone reeked of was almost pitiful, and to place that against Bucky Barnes— Ugh. Let’s just say that the sympathy anyone ever tried to reflect was simply appalling. 

Shuri moved her lips to say in Xhosa: “What must we do with him?”

“Leave it,” T’Challa replied in their native language, his eyes set hard on the swaying body of Tony Stark. The man was relishing in the successful mess he created, and the King didn’t know if he should be afraid or disgusted.

So bear with me lol.

Rules: Answer the questions and then tag as many writers as there are questions answered (or as many as you can) to spread the positivity! Even if these questions are not explicitly brought up in the novel, they are still good to keep in mind when writing.

FIRST LOOK

1. Describe your novel in 1-2 sentences (elevator pitch)

Richard, Volt and Skyler, the three person crew of courier ship the Lord of Chaos (working name for now lol) all have someone trying to track them down. As easy as it would be to live their new lives, none of them can run forever.

2. How long do you plan for your novel to be? (Is it a novella, single book, book series, etc.)

Just one book. I wish I had the patience for multiple books but… I do not.

3. What is your novel’s aesthetic?

It’s a little rough in this department, but something along the lines of romanticized space travel, far future society spread across multiple planets, daring heros and cunning villians. Tbh think like… Spatoon 2 Octo Expansion... but in Space.

4. What other stories inspire your novel? 

I am currently seeking some inspiration right now lol. But so far I don’t think there have been any specific stories that really inspired this one as much as just like… General ideas that come up in a lot of different stories like the vague notions of space stuff, fugitives, over-the-top skills/abilities, … I hope to find some outside inspiration soon though.

MAIN CHARACTER

6. Who is your protagonist?

Technically I have three planned for this one, but I’ll focus on Richard for now.

7. Who is their closest ally? 

Hands down, Volt Powell. He trusts her completely .

8. Who is their enemy?

He wouldn’t really call the Organization (name in the making still lol) an enemy, but he wants nothing to do with him and fears being captured and dragged back since he more or less ran away (and is VERY valuable to them both financially and practically).

9. What do they want more than anything?

To exist as freely as other people without having to hide away out of sight. He doesn’t want people to think he’s dangerous and he just kind of wants to live his life.

10. Why can’t they have it?

The organization that made him is trying to track him down, and he can’t usually leave the ship in populated areas without running the risk of someone reporting him (he’s not exactly human-looking as he was more or less created through a combination of genetics and engineering by what can kind of be considered space mafia/illuminati stuff?? More on that eventually when I have it figured out).

11. What do they wrongly believe about themselves?

That he’s only valuable/most valued for what he can do, not who he is.

12. Draw your protagonist! (Or share a description)

He’s fairly tall, with black hair that is so dark it doesn’t reflect any light. One eye is similar to that of a cats, with a yellow-orange iris and slit pupil that can dilate wider for better night vision while the other looks less biological, and was made to see light in the infrared spectrum (though has broken by the time the story takes place). He has sharp teeth, fingertips that can convert to claws, and antenna-like things by his ears that allow him to kind of... tune his hearing or something. His skin is fairly pale, with a kind of cool-toned complexion like he’d been outside in the cold for too long. 

PLOT POINTS

13. What is the internal conflict?

Since he’s kind of like a cyborg with biological and non-biological parts making up his body, he needs semi-regular maintenance, but its been years since he’s last been with the organization and the lack of upkeep is starting to show. He doesn’t want to worry Volt, and especially doesn’t want to worry Skyler, so he tries to keep it to himself, but there’s no question that his body is wearing out and will only get worse without treatment only the organization can give. But at the same time, if the organization were to operate on him, he knows they would replace a part that had been accidentally removed years ago which alters neurotransmitter function that made him easier for them to control and blocked most emotions except anger. So he doesn’t want that.

14. What is the external conflict?

That parts a little fuzzy right now, but it will involve the organization gaining on  their tail, the tyrannical prime minister’s daughter (skyler’s half sister) and a tangled web ready to unravel.

15. What is the worst thing that could happen to your protagonist?  

The Organization captures him back and turns him back into a tool for extermination.

16. What secret will be revealed that changes the course of the story?  

It’s all up in the air right now, so I’ve got nothing for sure yet. But I’m thinking that there may be one person who ends up being connected to more than meets the eye.

17. Do you know how it ends?  

No lol.

BITS AND BOBS

18. What is the theme?  

Different kinds of love (ie, family, friends, parental, siblings etc…) and ties between individuals.

19. What is a recurring symbol?  

I don’t know if I’ve gotten far enough to have that kind of detail known yet.

20. Where is the story set? (Share a description!) 

A solar system… somewhere… maybe our solar system… maybe not? Depends on if I want to make up planets or not.

21. Do you have any images or scenes in your mind already?  

Yeah some of them, though I can’t be sure how many will actually make it into the story when I start writing. None of them are in any way connected to each other either.

22. What excited you about this story?  

I’ve wanted to do a sci-fi thing for a while (my last two wips were both fantasy based) so it’ll be fun to explore the genera. This story also uses characters that I made when I was still a kid (like, elementary school and early high school) and I’m excited to see how I write them- Rick, Volt and Skyler- now compared to when I first made them. This also gives me an excuse to write about things like genetics and other science things that I find interesting.

23. Tell us about your usual writing method!  

Well, it’s kind of lengthy but it works. First I get the idea, then flesh out the characters and sort of form a vague story around them. Next I make a point form, chapter by chapter outline of what I  think I want to happen. Then I pick a nice notebook and handwrite the first draft from the outline. After that, I review what I wrote, make a few notes and rewrite it on the computer. After all that than I revise, and finally, I edit.

What’s your most popular fic, by whatever metric is most relevant to you (hits, kudos, comments, reblogs, some other trait)?

 My top fic on Ao3 is Ar Lath Ma, my Solavellan reunion fic and the very first fic I ever wrote. I love, and I still think it has some good stuff (and it is canon for Iwyn & Solas), but I’d write it different today, of course.  My most popular tumblr piece (counting notes) is Alone, a piece of Solas gen angst. I think a generic character study resonated and reached outside Solasmancers. Read more about my most popular fics here, in my latest quarterly review, and what I think makes fics popular. 

What’s your favourite fic that you’ve written?

I think that is probably Temerity. It is my longest fic (though it is still not very long), and I managed to write something that is not just drabbles. It is also intense, and in many ways at the edge of my comfort zone. It was a challenge, and I’m really proud that I did write it. 

Of my drabbles, my love for them changes, but currently Home is still very close to my heart, for personal reasons. 

What’s your best fic, and is it different from your favourite fic? 

I’m not sure which is my best? I think Stars is really good, because I did some nice tricks with motion/descriptions?, and there was a point connecting the beginning and the end. But I have just been thinking of it, so maybe that is why. 

I really think Roots turned out really good too. 

but I don’t know if any of these are my best? I find it hard to completely judge my own writing. You tell me??

Do you have a fic whose popularity surprised you? 

I would go with Fake (ao3) - a fake marriage modern AU Solavellan fic. I wrote it partly as a dialogue exercise, after my ‘writing teacher’ aka @galadrieljones (ily), made me read Hemingway’s ‘Hills Like White Elephants’ which really is a great example of what you can do with dialogue. I think my style in Fake is almost too derivative, but as I said, it was meant as an exercise in this style - for the most part, I did not follow do it consistently. 

However, a lot of people really enjoyed the fic and the premise, which I was un-prepared for. The premise was a little ridiculous, it makes huge jumps in time, part of it focuses on Iwyn’s relationship with her brother? I guess it is a popular trope! 

Do you have a fic you wish more people would read? 

I mean I want more people to read all my fics? I always get a little upset when I post, when I don’t feel I get enough notes / reblogs. But then when I go back and look at it and I’m thinking - nobody read this fic q.q - but it has a decent amount of notes and I can’t really complain? 

That said, I wish more people would read my Seravellan stuff (Rifts are Stupid, Treacherous Furniture and After). And I thought Wordless was Really Good Smut (tm) so it could have been more read. 

Is there a ship or fandom you haven’t written, but really want to? 

You know, one day I might write that AC:Origins Bayek post game drabble. Or I can imagine that I may write something about Kassandra for AC: Odyssey. But who knows? I like write about OCs, and not just canon characters. 

In terms of DA, I don’t have a lot other ships I think I’d like to write for, maybe some more OC x OC stuff. 

Tell us a random fact about your writing process: 

Uh? I write very slowly. I tend to throw sentences I like in the document, and sometimes sentences I don’t like and then I go back and fix later. Sometimes they are not fully formed, sometimes they are half, because I skipped ahead. Sometimes I write everything in multiple ways. I tend to edit and edit and edit. I mark things I want to change in orange, and things I want to delete in red. I think I am getting better at writing sentences that are somewhat done, and not just incomplete, incoherent thoughts.

I’ve never used the Underage or Rape/Non-Con warnings, and I have no intention of using them any time soon. Tbh I’m a little surprised at how few MCD fics I’ve written. I could have sworn it would be higher than that, but I suppose a huge amount of the angst I’ve written tends to have people surviving at the end (eventually) because I just find it more rewarding. But I was sure there would have been more deathfics

I don’t consider myself all that adventurous. I mean, at this point I know the sort of stuff I’m burning to read and can never get enough of, and that’s what I tend to write. But there’s a lot of stuff that I’m uncomfortable exploring or thinking about, or that just doesn’t sit right with me, so that probably reins in any adventurours tendencies I have

The huge proliferation of het fic is solely thanks to all the short E/C pieces I’ve written, and when it’s excluded my relationship categories are changed to look like this:

which is a good bit closer to how I actually perceive my own fic. I’d definitely drawn to slash both in writing and reading, so the fact that one ship I’ve written for can skew all my numbers definitely feels a bit strange.

I’m definitely still active in PotO (just about these days), and I’ve been contemplating writing some more Harry Potter stuff, but odds are I won’t. I don’t migrate much at all when it comes to writing, but I’ve read a huge amount of stuff for fandoms that I’ve never written for, and have no immediate intentions of writing for. I guess I’m just drawn to writing and exploring certain things, even though my interests are broader than that. Plus, a lot of the feelings I’ve had about other fandoms (Persuaders, Time Traveler’s Wife, Tombstone, Wynonna Earp, Danger UXB, Chess, Les Mis) tend to get distilled down and incorporated into fics for other fandoms or original stuff. Wraiths, RTtR, and Tinder Date have acted as sort of buffers and I’ve sort of expunged my Other Fandom Feelings into those in different ways. I just find it hard to write for different fandoms.

In fairness, the reason Erik is my most written about character is the fact that I write about him a lot in conjunction with other characters. It’s not just E/C that’s shoved him into the top spot, but all those little exploratory fics and the Pharoga stuff and the Gen stuff. He’s someone who’s relationships I tend to write about a lot without him being the viewpoint character, but he does seem to be central to all I’ve done.

This top 4 is basically just a breakdown of the top 2 ships I’ve written for. The next 4 is a little more varied but it continues the domination of just 2 fandoms, which says a lot about the things I’m able to write.

It’s fair to say that I’ve written an unholy amount of PotO fic, but let’s remember that a huge amount of that E/C stuff is angsty as all hell, and some of it is indeed also R/C.

I can’t say I’m shocked with how it’s turned out, but I am satisfied that I’ve written more Pharoga than R/C.

2, Fragmentations and Past and Future. Though considering that they’re both collections of one-shots they’re not really WIPs in the true sense of it. I keep planning to finish them out with ficlets already on my laptop, but I never get around to doing it.
