personally i do think julian bashir is trans, but not in a way that sublimates his genetic alterations into a trans allegory. i think he's disabled and trans at the same time, but i think his rebellion against his parents--the symbolic death of his old self with the name change--that's not about gender, for him, at all.
it's about the incredible violation of autonomy he experienced as a disabled person under the knife of a eugenicist society. it's about the need to reclaim some, any, of the agency that was so completely stolen from him by his parents.
it's about discovering that his entire self was deconstructed and reconstructed, without his knowledge or consent, for the express purpose of being less of a burden on his parents.
because let's not forget that the death of julian's old self was not his decision. it was his parents who killed the old self and created a new one.
let's not forget that human society in star trek is still recovering from the eugenics wars--that just because it's post-scarcity doesn't mean it's a utopia.
let's not forget the multiple episodes where bashir is forced to confront the fact that his "success story" is truthfully a gross reminder of how deeply his society (and his family) hates disabled people, not only shown in how they tried to fix him, but also in the fact that the process so rarely works as intended, yet is still done anyway--and the failures and the ones too far gone to save are locked away! with no connection to general society, and only the bare minimum provision for their physical needs, with no privacy and no autonomy!
and let's not forget that julian sees these people and is torn between the empathy he has for them, and his urge to fix them. and he goes through with this urge on Sarina, "fixing" her to conform to his idea of what she ought to be, treating her as a problem to be solved, objectifying her via "my ideal woman was trapped in this disabled body/mind and i saved her," thus continuing the cycle of violence, because even he can't conceive of a world where the disabled do not need to be fixed. where the violence done to him was wrong. fuck man

Doctor Bashir I Presume AU where Julian transitioned during the Academy but never told his parents: (This totally got out of hand I'm sorryyyy 😅)
"What did you do to your lovely hair?" - Amsha's first reaction to seeing him in Sisko's office (He always wore a wig to visit them. This is exactly why.)
"You must be very proud of your son." "Our... son?"
Richard and Amsha trying to hide how unimpressed they are because they know it's socially unacceptable to be transphobic
(Not that they'd call themselves transphobic, of course. They have trans friends! But with Jules, well, it's different, isn't it? With all that they spent on her enhancements, there's no way her DNA would have been left with any... imperfections. And when it comes down to it, their her parents - they know her better than she knows herself.)
Amsha complaining at dinner how Julian hadn't prepared them for the shock of seeing him. "How could you do this to us? We were so embarrassed in front of your Captain."
(As if it wasn't them in the first place who had showed up totally unannounced 🙃🙄)
Richard saying that if Julian had told them he'd been having these feelings from the beginning, they might have been able to get help for him before he ruined his body.
Richard (angrily): "You've got some nerve, asking us to be careful with this Zimmerman chap! With the sort of risks you've been taking? Don't you realise how easily you could have been found out, all for some unnecessary surgery?" Julian (painfully restrained): "I don't expect you to understand, father, but it was necessary for me." Amsha (sadly): "Your father's just looking out for you, Jules. Try to understand that."
Misunderstandings abound when talking to Miles*, but eventually it's cleared up that Julian's parents are shit.
Cue a lot of anger (and a lot more anger than Julian thought anyone would feel. Because, you know, when you grow up knowing that your parents aren't the most accepting people, you figure that's just what some parents are like, rather than assuming yours are among the most outliers of outliers...)
Miles tells Julian he should talk to Sisko and get his parents kicked off the station. Julian's like, "That's a nice idea, but the captain can't just do that unless he's got a good reason" and Miles is like "You do know that persistently misgendering someone is literally a Federation hate crime, right?"
The Bashirs of course deny any wrongdoing. Richard gets angry, claiming "it's a family matter". Amsha starts crying about how unfair it all is.
"You have to understand, Captain -- she's been our daughter for over thirty years. We know Jules is angry with us but please, she knows that we love her really. If you could just let us talk to her--"
Sisko is fuming. "I might believe you cared if you had made any attempt to get Julian's gender right." "You don't know what it's like!" Amsha protests. "This is all so sudden!" "I know exactly what it's like!" Ben snaps back. "And I'll tell you, I didn't for a second consider telling Jake that I didn't believe him, or that he must be mistaken, or that he needed to be patient with my mistakes. In fact, I made sure as hell that I didn't make mistakes. There's no case here, as far as I'm concerned. You're both confined to quarters until the next shuttle arrives."
So I guess in the aftermath of all that, Julian's enhancements never get revealed. Even if the Bashirs were to make an apology, Miles would shut the hologram down, now he knows what Julian's parents are like.
But I think they probably feel too betrayed to try and make an apology, even a bad one.
So yeah, they're forced off the station and Julina actually gets, like, support and stuff from his friends!
Also, for like, a month afterwards, all of Molly and Yoshi's bedtime stories have trans main characters because Miles is low-key anxious about them ever starting to feel like Julian had about it not being okay.
(Keiko catches onto this and just happens to invite Julian around one night when it's storytime. Molly gets Julian to read her book. It's cute.)
(Afterwards, he enthuses about how he wishes he'd had books like that when he was a kid. And that's... sad.)
About two months later, when enough time has passed that Jadzia can pretend this isn't about Julian (although it totally is), Jadzia gets Quark and Jake involved in digging up some Earth history and holding a stationwide Pride celebration. (Julian appreciates both the gesture and the pretense.)
Garak makes some huffy comment to Julian about how "of course the Federation would have a whole festival devoted to degeneracy". Julian rolls his eyes and is about to take the bait, when he suddenly realises, "Wait, didn't Dukat once accuse you of being a degenerate?" "Wholly unsubstantiated claims, my dear Doctor." "Of course," Julian agrees sagely. "Although," he adds, a grin dancing across his lips, "if you ever find yourself wanting to substantiate them, Mister Garak..."
*The Misunderstandings:
"No offense, Julian, but you look wrecked. Is everything okay?"
Not meeting Miles' eyes, Julian takes a breath, as if to compose himself. "Let's just say that my parents are not exactly taking the news that I'm trans well."
In the moment, Miles chooses the wrong part of the sentence to focus on. "Wait, you're trans?"
Julian shrugs unhappily, a flash of anxiety passing over his face. "That doesn't... change how you feel about me, does it?" he asks hesitantly.
"'Course not!" replies Miles. "It's a bit of a surprise, I'll give you that, but-- No, sorry, I mean: what pronouns do you want me to use? Do you want to go by a different name?"
Before Julian can respond, Miles has another thought. "And what do you mean, your parents aren't taking this well? You're their son! -- Sorry, daughter-- offspring-- their child, I mean--"
"Hold up, Chief," Julian says, shaking his head in bemusement. "I'm still Julian. I'm very much a man. My parents just didn't know that until... yesterday."
"You never told them?"
"No."
"For how long?"
"Twelve years, if you're counting from when I first came out. More like twenty if you go from when I first knew."
"Jesus." Miles runs a hand through his hair. "Well, at least that explains why they're mad. That's an awfully big thing to hide from your own parents, Julian."
Julian grimaces. "I know," he replies, looking down. "It wasn't exactly brave, I guess but... I don't know. It was easier to cope with being misgendered because they didn't know, than being misgendered on purpose, you know?"
Being misgendered on purpose? This is such a bizarre statement, so at odds with what Miles knows of the world, that it takes him a minute to try and wrap his head around it.
"I'm lost, I'm afraid," he says eventually. "I can't, um-- Julian, what happened when you told your parents?"

ive been thinking about trans julian and how his parents call him jules and a lot of ppl r like "oh well being trans is accepted in the federation so theres no way his parents could be transphobic!" which like. thats what living in a blue state is like lmao. btu i was thinking about this more from that angle and ended up with the idea that yeah, his parents are supportive, but its all superficial. Julian's parents are obsessed with reputation and images (his father specifically, and I personally do not believe they chose to alter Julian absent of any kind of shame. Come on now.), and because of the acceptance thats commonplace on earth and the federation, they cannot be openly transphobic without risking their standing and reputations. So they use his pronouns, let him do informed consent hrt, but all the while telling him how hes "wasting" and "ruining" the" perfect body they gave him". and julian knows they only support him for their own image. And this is how I get to the "Jules" thing. It is his deadname. That was his given name. But Jules is a masucline enough name for people unaware to not think its deadnaming. Even people who do know Julian is trans, they think it's just a nickname his parents have for him. That's why they're so inistant on calling him Jules. They can't misgender him, they'll look ridiculous, and thats more clearly transphobic than calling him Jules. Its the last thing they have to truly let him know how they think of him as an individual. He can get as far away from them as possible, but they will always have something over him. They will always be able to remind him of what they think is "the truth". Julian's parent's see his transition as a betrayal and a waste, but cannot openly be unsupportive, so they use the last thing they have. Calling him Jules. And nobody notices, nobody thinks anything of it. It's Julian's weight alone to bear, surrounded by people who love him, but can do nothing to help because they just don't know. He's terrified of having even more of his weaknesses revealed.

Ok so I've watched Deep Space Nine's "Far Beyond the Stars" about a million times, but tell me why I just noticed that during that episode, Bashir is only referred to as Jules, or what is essentially his deadname? The first time I heard it, it took me a moment, before punching me directly in the gut a bit, because it's just one more example of someone who wasn't able to fully express themselves or be themselves, besides Ben's character. Just knowing that if Julian's character lived in a different time from that "flashback" (or dream sequence, window to the past, whatever theory you have) he would have wanted to have a different name than the one assigned to him is simply heartbreaking </3

((It’s that time of the month and I’m giving Julian a specific embarrassing moment that I think has happened to everyone))
((I’ll leave notes to explain my thoughts and writing))
Julian returns from a stressful mission while waiting for his ship to dock finally. He rushes off excitedly for his lunch with garak, they plan to discuss a new book garak recommended while he was away for the mission. Garak notices a smell of blood he thinks Julian is injured and is too stubborn to admit injury ((on Cardassia it’s typically signing a death warrant to admit your injured or showing any weakness because someone can exploit it)) , so he tries to pry it out of Julian by using the book ((sometimes you can say something without saying it or using an example)) They eat for an hour arguing over the books both detailing their interpretation and why the other is right. Garak suggests they get up and walk around to catch up with each other when really he’s going to walk the stubborn doctor into the infirmary. But Julian goes to get up first and notices a red mark on the chair and promptly sits back down refusing to move out of complete and utter embarrassment at forgetting to mark the calendar. He frantically attempts to let garak know while berating himself inside his head “I can’t move” then Julian grabs garak’s and his napkin off the table before putting it on his lap and sitting on the other one. But Garak misinterprets this as god dammit of course he can’t his injuries are too bad and just out right asks. Julian tries and fails miserably to explain why he’s bleeding because for fucks sake mate they are literally at the Replimat and there’s a bunch of people already staring at the commotion. He gets up and sorta plays it off like “haha I split food” before scrubbing the chair off with the napkins and garak is like what is happening and stop that before you injure yourself further. Then Julian removes his top half of the jumpsuit and sorta ties it around his waist before grabbing garaks hand and rushing out of there straight to the infirmary while garak protests and tries to slow down to talk about “hey maybe don’t go there you can come to my quarters I’ll patch you up” ((oh my god they were roommates! Palm to palm *wink wonk*)) Julian stubbornly says “no we’re going to the infirmary and then we’re going to talk I have something to tell you”
But Garak has other ideas and pulls julian to a stop and practically half carries half drags julian to his quarters instead away from prying eyes and away from the infirmary because who knows who’s listening or watching. Julian promptly has a conniption about how dare Garak just decide for him where he gets to go and “oh my god now everyone is talking about it! someone kill me please kill me” then dramatically locks himself in the bathroom ((I’ve done this the bathroom is my fortress YOU SHALL NOT PASSS)) Garak being completely unnerved by this behavior goes to try to open the door only to be met with a crying Doctor Bashir on the bathroom floor curled up into the furthest corner like the walls at any minute could swallow him. Julian is just in pieces at this point he can’t stop crying god why can’t he stop this is not how he wanted to spend his time back with Garak, they were only supposed to get lunch then maybe talk but not this. He doesn’t need to know about this part of his life how much he hates it and how much it makes him want to tear into himself for everyday he bleeds is another day of misery.
End for now I’ll post later but I have to go eat I forgot to eat (✽´ཫ`✽)

eMERgency (Garashir - DS9) - Shortfic
Explicit // M/M // Garashir - Elim Garak/Doctor Julian Bashir (ST: Deep Space Nine) // Tags: ftm Julian Bashir, trans character, trans Julian Bashir, mer anatomy, mermay, merman costume, established relationship, false emergency, costume fitting, semi-public sex, fingering, front hole penetration, squirting. Prompt fill. This might be crack?
MerMay prompt fill for Kira-Bird (though they didn't make it to the holosuite, sorry!)
Garak makes Julian a merman costume, with a surprising addition.
eMERgency (2.2k words):
“I’m here!” Julian panted, medical bag in hand, “What’s the emergency?” He looked around the tailor shop expecting to find some sort of scene rather than a completely empty shop.
“Oh, there you are,” Garak spoke pleasantly as he came out from behind a shelf of material bolts. With his usual casual demeanour, he strolled towards Julian, “I had been waiting for some fantastic material to come in. I wasn’t sure it would work out. Wait here.”
Garak walked past Julian to the storage area whilst Julian frowned after him.
“Garak, I was given to believe there was some sort of emergency,” He kept his tone flat, though he wasn’t really angry. He never could quite get himself mad at Garak.
“Well, it is.” Garak insisted as he returned from storage with a garment bag. He placed it upon the workstation and looked over at Julian expectantly. At which Julian sighed and walked over to give this emergency his full attention.
Garak unzipped the bag and began to gently extract a fabric that seemed almost like liquid in the way it moved and glistened. “I need you to try this on before I make the final alterations. I’ve done it all so far by the measurements I have on your file,” Garak eyed him up and down with a somewhat salacious grin that let Julian know he had detailed measurements of every part of his body. “But this is a difficult fabric to work with, it moulds to the body once put on, so I need to ensure that it sits correctly around your waist, knees and feet. We don’t want unsightly lumps and bumps.”
“Can’t have that,” Julian agreed, his tone cool and cynical.
Garak continued to draw out the fabric which Julian had, bizarrely, thought might be some sort of evening gown. But now, from the bag, came what appeared to be a fishtail. Julian blinked and his cheeks heated.
“Oh,” he said, breathless. “It’s a… fishtail.”
“Well, more accurately, a merman’s tail.” Garak corrected as he pulled it over the workstation so that it flared out entirely. The tail fin was huge, but the tail itself, Julian could see, was the length of his own abdomen to feet.
It had been months since the conversation they’d had about this. One of those pillowtalk moments where they lay in the afterglow of their lovemaking.
Julian had mentioned that as a child, before he took up tennis, before he had been altered by his parents, he had enjoyed swimming. Weak and uncoordinated on land, in the water he felt stronger and more in control. He was sure to any onlookers he seemed no more than a floundering child barely able to keep from drowning, but in his mind he was a merman.  He hadn’t meant anything by it, not really. Just sharing part of himself with the man he loved. But this appeared to be very true to who Garak was and how he showed Julian love, that he had now made him a merman costume.

Listen, I love Trans Julian Bashir. Would never criticize it. I do think intersex works better. Especially in terms of forced surgery to make you into a version of yourself that they wanted. And finding out way after the fact and what it means to yourself.

My TNG poll is over (Data won and I should not be surprised lmao; proud of dealer's choice Will Riker for pulling a solid third) so let's do another one!
Dax and Odo don't get to be in it because that feels like cheating. they're actually trans.

Julian-is-pregnant-with-Yoshi AU but the timeline is squidged a bit so he's one month due when he goes to his medical conference.
(Miles protests, of course, but Julian has a pretty solid argument with "I'll be literally surrounded by doctors, even on the shuttle there'll be at least five, it will be absolutely fine.")
The Founders still plan to impersonate Julian, but they've done their research, so while kidnapping Julian they also deliver Yoshi and return to the station pretending to have given birth at the conference.
("Unbelievable!" says Miles. "I knew I shouldn't have let you gone." "I'm sorry you weren't there," replies the changeling, "but we were in the best hands. Dr Girani says we're both in excellent health.")
Julian wakes up at the Internment Camp, no longer pregnant. He assumes the worst. When Worf and Garak turn up, none of them mention the baby. Even Garak is too distracted by Tain to remember that Julian wouldn't know his child was safe. Or maybe he does, but chooses not to bring it up, fearing what the baby might actually be.
They escape. The irony is, if the baby hadn't been taken, he might actually have survived the camp, safe inside Julian. It's 37 days after his kidnapping. 5 months since he decided he was a more viable surrogate than Kira. He would have been due tomorrow.
Back on DS9, he does his best for Worf - always a doctor first - and waves off the concerns about his own health until later. There's something he needs to do first. He's dreading seeing Keiko and Miles, but apologising is the only thing on his mind right now.
("But what if it's not fine?" Miles had protested. "It's a medical conference, Miles," Keiko had laughed. "How much trouble could Julian really get into?" "I'll look after him," Julian had promised. "I'll keep him safe, you know I will." He should have listened to Miles.)
And he gets to the O'Brien's quarters and Miles answers the door like they've been expecting him and he doesn't even know where to start because somehow Miles is smiling at him and Keiko is smiling at him from the sofa and-
And Keiko-
And Keiko is holding a baby.
Julian looks at Miles, demanding answers to questions he can't even begin to formulate. And Miles gently asks him "Do you want to hold Yoshiro?" as if it's the most normal thing in the world.
---
(So this was meant to be very small "fic I'll never write but I want to share the premise" post but it kind of got away from me.... And now I want to write the actual fic, the worst XD )
