Have a messy Rexwalker AU

Anidala were casual, there was flirting with Rex but it never went anywhere. Anakin doesn't get barbecued and ends up as Suitless Vader, so the Vader identity is more or less public.

Vader is Captured ™️ by a miscellaneous individual, and Sheevy Boy doesn't care enough to find him.

Instead, Rex stumbles across captured Vader, who is:

A cute girl now

An amnesiac of the fantasy "I don't remember who I am, only have the faintest flashes of my old life" variety

Rex steals Anakin. And kind of... does the questionable thing:

Implies they were a couple, affianced, prior to Her Head Injury.

Rex builds a life of domestic bliss on LIES in the back end of nowhere.

Ahsoka is horrified when she finds them, even though it means Vader isn't so much an issue anymore.

He tries to say it's for the greater good (he'll tell her the truth eventually! When he's sure she won't go back to Sheev!) But uhhhhh he's Guilty Happy whenever she hugs him or gives him a cheek kiss etc.

Waking up in the same bed almost makes him cry with emotion.

(The intended implication of Anakin not noticing anything is wrong wrt gender and the surgeries is that she was never cis in the first place and just. Didn't realize. Could be fully binary trans, could be gender indifferent. Won't know until the truth comes out that she wasn't Always Like This.)

actually always thinking of darth vader through a transgender lense bc i’m insane but also bc it is SO EASY to do a trans reading of his whole deal like to me, personally, in the star wars in my brain that is better than yours and doesn’t gaf about authorial intent, darth vader is in part a manifestation/personification of the horrifying feelings of loss of control that come with long-term repression/closeting or forced detransition. and this works on a purely superficial level because darth vader is hypermasculine in a way that starkly contrasts a lot of anakin’s softer/more androgynous traits but if we are to actually think beyond the superficial the themes of loss of autonomy and rejection of personal identity in favor of one given to you are veryyyy resonant from a trans perspective. constant insistent rejection of your true self. “that name no longer has any meaning to me.” even his voice is not his own. etc etc. vader is a reinvention of anakin but that reinvention is into an empty husk whose entire existence is to be another person’s pawn. vader is not so much a new identity as he is a lack of one. and i don’t want to dismiss that on a literal textual level disability is a part of the Body aspect but all this is far less about his injuries and part more about how they’re treated, specifically how his body is altered in ways that are entirely about creating a more imposing image and basically turning him into a weapon (there is no reason for him to be 6’7), and that again ties into the idea of Erosion Of Self. and i think these aspects come together in a way that is so easy to read as trans, or at least that resonates with me as a trans person, because so much of repressing as a trans person is inventing an empty version of yourself and accepting your physical state as something you are fundamentally not in control of and self-denial for others. and vader encompasses a lot of those feelings taken to body horror space opera extremes

One thing that always feels so funny for me when it comes to the Rosebird Parents Theory isn’t when people simply disagree with the theory, but rather people apparently seeing the prospect of a ‘Raven is Ruby’s real father’ reveal to be this totally unthinkable thing and how could anyone ever think this could happen?!

Because once you get past the whole ‘two ladies making a baby’ hurtle, Raven being Ruby’s dad really fits into so many well-known fantasy/sci-fi tropes. Many of which RWBY notably has not done yet, or have already been tied to Raven herself.

I mean, the mysterious villainous and/or anti-heroic loner with ties to the family pulling an ‘I am your Father’ reveal on the protagonist? That’s a fucking CLASSIC. Hell, let’s consider a few things about Raven:

Big, intimidating helmet.

Clear Samurai inspiration.

Wields a katana-like sword that technically has an energy blade (dust=energy) which is generally RED-colored.

Possesses mysterious and terrible over-worldly powers.

Has a mysterious past tied to our protagonist’(s) family.

Was probably in love with our protagonist’s (apparently) dead mother.

Yeah I’d say Raven makes for a pretty good Darth Vader-expy.*

Beyond that specific case, we’ve already seen the story connect Raven to a BUNCH of ‘mysterious and angsty deadbeat dad who left their kid for unclear reasons’ tropes when it comes to Yang. Why not have those apply to Ruby as well? People have been clamoring for years about wanting to see Summer’s narrative dynamic with Yang explored as much as the one she has with Ruby, so why not have the reverse be true with Raven and Ruby as well?

After all, it seems that the story has now given Ruby a reason to seek Raven for answers just as Yang once did.

And as I’ve noted in previous Rosebird Parents posts, No I don’t believe Raven also being Ruby’s deadbeat dad would be somehow ‘redundant’. Particularly because the context is completely different: Yang has known that Raven is her birth-mother for most of her life, whereas Ruby would only just now be finding out that Raven is her birth-father. Far from being redundant, this would allow the story to explore two very different responses of kids to an absent parent: One who has had to live with the knowledge of that absent parent for years, and one who hasn’t and has to deal with this NEW information suddenly getting dropped on her.

Plus, as I alluded to earlier, it’s rather notable that RWBY hasn’t done some big ‘dramatic parent reveal’, given how much of a staple it is to the genre. And given how reimagining, twisting and flipping classic and well-worn fairytale/folklore/fantasy tropes (often via playing with gender-roles) is basically RWBY’s bread and butter at this point, I’d say giving the series heroine an ‘I am your father’ reveal from a woman would fit PERFECTLY in this series.

And if you���re going to ask ‘but how do two ladies make baby?!?’,

Raven can be intersex. Boom. Done.

Alternatively, magic.

As an aside, yes Summer being trans is a perfectly viable alternative. I just think logistically speaking, Raven being intersex and being Ruby’s ‘father’ makes a dramatic reveal a bit more streamlined. Also, the idea of Raven managing to be BOTH a deadbeat mom AND a deadbeat dad is just too funny XD

*Of course, this comparison gets even more fun when we consider Summer having her own Vader-parallels, ie; Summer almost certainly being taken by Salem and given what we can probably assume to be a Vader-esque makeover via grimm-hybridization in setup for a big reveal. So when we combine this with Raven, I think we can view what happened on their last mission as ‘What if Padme/Obi-wan got turned into Vader INSTEAD of Anakin?’ Like Raven in the present is basically Anakin doing Obi-wan’s traumatized hermit shtick, except all angry and edgy because it’s still Anakin.

You don't have to be trans to change your name or be uncomfortable with it. Kylo was always uncomfortable as Ben even before joining the darkside. He hated that he had the name of a man he never knew and had no attachment to. He hated that solo was a fake last name.

It was stated in the Rise of Kylo Ren comics that Kylo picked that name during childhood. Even if the Ren title was earned in a way he particularly never wanted, Kylo was always his chosen name.

Idk maybe I'm just projecting my transness onto him. But I always sorta get sad when redeemed Kylo Ren is reduced to "Ben". He can still be good with the name Kylo and without the discomfort that his birthname gave him throughout his whole life.

Several Sentence Sunday

I am absolutely cheating with the number of sentences today, and I won't apologize for it. I wrote 2K+ words last night for seahorse dad henry (reminder that means pregnant trans henry)((I did this in addition to finishing a 17K+ fic)), so I wanted to share this whole snippet to celebrate.

(Discussion of My) WIP Wednesday: Transgender themes

I haven't really been writing much lately, but I've been thinking for a while that I wanted to talk about the trans themes in my fic "Their fragrance came from you", in which Obi-Wan (an omega) poses as an alpha so that he can take the throne.

When I started the fic, I didn't really think of it as containing any trans themes; I just thought it would be a good source of conflict. And then about 2 months back, I was asking people for opinions on a problem and my friend @nickelanddamned suggested that, while having sex, Anakin should notice that Obi-Wan didn't form a knot, then soothe him by saying something like "Hey, you'll always be my Alpha, no matter what your body says"

And that shook me.

Because I fucking loved it, I adored it, but it didn't fit into the narrative I wanted to write at all. But that sentence "You'll always be my alpha, no matter what your body says" was so blatantly trans. What a brilliant message!

It would have been a beautiful way to resolve the scenario, too. So why didn't I want to write it? If Obi-Wan wanted to be an alpha and Anakin supported him by referring to him as such, treating him as such, then what was the problem? Why did it strike me as wrong?

Was I being, at my core, unintentionally transphobic? Of course an author is allowed to take their story in any direction they want, but this seemed deeper for some reason.

After much, much thought, I finally found my answer.

Until age fifteen or so (until Obi-Wan presents), his dynamic causes no problems. And then it causes many problems.

To keep the throne, he needs to teach himself how to act like an alpha. He needs to appear a certain way, behave a certain way. He needs to avoid ever thinking of himself as an omega, just so that people will accept him.

Sound familiar yet?

He gets married, and the idea of his husband seeing his body makes him sick with fear, despite all his wants. Yes, he does want to top Anakin, to fuck him. But he doesn't have the right equipment-- the expected equipment.

And besides, he also wants Anakin to lay him down and fuck him. Some alphas like to bottom, Obi-Wan knows. But is it too suspicious, if he asks for it? Will it compromise his cover? He finds himself second-guessing every action, even as his attraction to Anakin grows.

So. Why didn't I want Anakin to reassure Obi-Wan he was an alpha no matter what? It's because Obi-Wan doesn't want to be an alpha.

What he really wants is to be allowed to be an omega, both publicly and privately. He just wants to stop pretending.

So no, I wasn't being weirdly transphobic. In fact, my experiences as a closeted trans person were informing the story all along, and I didn't even notice!

Turns out, Obi-Wan is just trans-coded in the other direction 🥰

Was watching a ContraPoints video (popular trans lady YouTuber) on some gender philosophy and got to thinking about trans girl Ani nuances.

OKAY SO: Contrapoints makes a comment in the video (transcript here) that she views herself as a boy who became a woman, not a girl who didn't realize it yet, which is a relatively uncommon approach among trans people, and that's in the middle of a longer discussion on the flaws in radfem theology (which I watched right after this PhilosophyTube video, and accidentally conflated the two since the former talked a lot about systems/structures of gender).

Anyway, I'm rotating that in my mind with regards to Anakin, who grew up in a setting that could easily be interpreted as having a much foggier distinction between Man and Woman than between Slave and Maste,r or human and twilek, etc.

It's entirely feasible that, on Tatooine in particular, the social elements of gender came down to very practical concerns (reproduction) and very superficial signs (e.g. hairstyle could maybe broadcast intended gender, and who wears skirts) outside of the specific situation of highly gendered and sexual forms of slavery (Jabba's dancing girls), which was relatively rare compared to more standard forms, like shop work or janitorial or what have you.

So you have an Anakin who grew up in a setting where "am I a girl?" isn't necessarily a question that would have the same answer as in another setting with more defined gender distinctions, in terms of both expression and role, and of the matter of identity at that confluence.

Then he--still he, at that time--meets Padmé and the handmaidens (very feminine, very girl, but not in a way that's at all like the way women on Tatooine willingly engage with), and encounters Coruscant culture (lots of gender dynamics due to the culture mash, but a low-key Western Misogyny vibe in the Senate and other non-Jedi settings Anakin's liable to encounter), as well as the Jedi classes on gender and sexuality and respecting/navigating those parts of culture on other planets.
