Thank you!! I use Clip Studio Paint, but an older version that I refused to update/upgrade LOL don't tell them I did that 😳
Tumblr media
I made a post about this, actually! Some things that I keep in mind while drawing vintage digitally are color pallette, wear, yellowing, and imperfections/ bleeding of ink. Thinking in terms of how you make traditional art and then translating that to digital the medium is a big key. Traditional art isn't super crisp like digital art is, unless it's been digitally tampered with.
Here's <= the link to that post btw!
Tumblr media
Thank you sm!! :D
There's some places you can get free overlay files for your art! All you gotta do after importing them is adjust blend modes!
Here's One
And here's another :)

Hey there! I just discovered your art, and oh my goodness! I see that you usually do traditional, but I was wondering what brushes you use when you do digital art? I especially love the watercolor effects of your paintings btw!
I am too lazy to search for digital brushes so I use a basic Clip Paint studio brush set :D mostly basic pen + oil paint flat brush (it has no textures but is great for mixing colors together :) I know people can do great watercolour effects in digital but I never found out how! :D So most of the textures in my art come from actual watercolor or ink underpainting(here it is... under paint is soooo ugly,...ug...I usually don't look at it... but for the studying purposes I am sharing x_x)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
here is the final version
but I think I draw each of my pictures differently? :D So if you were asking about different styles, just send me the link for the picture and I can explain :D

A redraw! This was a traditional sketch that I kept revisiting because I liked it so much, but I never finished it (ala inking and coloring) until now! Circa 2022, btw. I decided to finish it digitally and keep the og sketch as the background (sorta, I know it's obscured). I had so much fun picking out a nice soft palette for this, and chunky sweaters are one of my favorite things to draw. I think I also have some older art of Shadow in chunky sweaters and pleated skirts, too. Oddly, that seems like a favorite combo of mine to draw lol! Might have to redraw some of those, too. No promises but I do have a few more old Sonic arts I'd like to redraw, and some newer stuff I want to make.

Hi! Do you have any tips on starting a Tumblr and being consistent? ALSO!! Do you have any art tips? Like what app do you use, how'd you pick your style, just really how do you do what you do so awesomely?
I'm not the most consistent artist tbh, especially after I developed tendinosis in my right arm BUT I try to draw what I love when I'm able, fanart is a big thing if you're starting off cause it gets your art out there to a bunch of different people, and it's also a great way to get out of an art block, it has helped me in many ocasions.
• As for art tips, I'd say first of all take care of your body and specially your arms and hands, cause that's your most important tool in the world, so please STRETCH!!! AND TAKE BREAKS!!! Believe me, I say this for personal experience.
• Try and draw everyday, even if you only got like 10 minutes available, and practice specific things for long periods of time, don't overwhelm yourself trying to learn anatomy, perspective, hair and color theory all at once. I'd say anatomy is a great way to start cause you can draw basically any character when you get the hang of it.
• Some people are too perfectionist and spend months in one artwork, which is fine, but when you're getting started and trying to get the gist of things, I'd say that quantity beats quality. That's some great youtube videos with the theme fail faster, check it out if you're able! • And always remember to never compare yourself with other artists, everyone has their own journey and background, only compare your current self with your past self, and you'll see how much you've grown.
Edit cause I forgot to answer these:
As for apps, I mainly use photoshop, and it's mostly cause I'm comfortable with it cause I've been using it since I first started drawing digitally. But I don't think the app matters all that much. I also love to do traditional work as well and I mostly use copic markes, watercolors and indian ink for those.
Regarding style, I just let it develop, drawing a lot, and testing things out, it's always good to have 3 artists you look up to for reference, this way you won't be literally copying one artist's style, you'll be mixing different things you like from each one and coming up with your own thing in the process. Don't focus too much on the style tho', it'll come naturally!
Btw I have no idea if this is a bot ask but I felt like sharing some things.

Hello! I was looking at your Pin Me Up zine piece (wonderful btw) and I wondered how you get such nice digital images of your traditional artwork? I always find it so difficult to get scans to look good even after digitally editing them but yours always look so clean and pretty
Hey Anon, Thank you kindly - and that’s a really great question! This would make a great video topic in the future - but for now, here’s the ‘quick’ breakdown!
I scan the image, 600dpi with the built-in scanner of an MX922 printer. I scan big so I can use these images for print one day if I choose.  I take it into photoshop (these principles should carry through to most other image editing programs) and my editing process looks something like this:
Tumblr media
Levels - (How dark the darks and how light the lights are) For watercolor images I always skew the greys lighter for future printing sake, as ink printed on paper always appears darker than on a screen.
Vibrance - punches up the saturation of muted colors without touching the colors that are already saturated.
Selective Color adjustment -  (similar to the Color Balance function) Specifically adjust the balance of certain color groups. My scanner is biased towards magenta, so for the Reds I often increase the amount of yellow to make them true red, and I’ll lessen the magenta in the Yellows to make them true yellow etc.
And once all that is done I’ll go in with a brush and clone stamp tool to sort out any errors that need fixing!
Thanks again for the great question - I hope that this was somewhat helpful! I’ve been trial and erroring watercolor editing going on 10 years now, and I learn something new every time. Best of luck with your edits (and if you’re ever so inclined I’d love to see them)!

Been absolutely obsessed with your vintage inspired designs, i have been staring at them for the past hour just trying to wrap my brain around how you are able to create something SO CONVINCING that im incapable of distinguishing your designs from legitimate works from 70’s indie zines(great work btw) so i have to ask, how do you do it, how long do you spend on an average piece? How the HECK do you make your color halftones identical to news print? I have so many questions!!!
Gee Willikers! Why, Thank you!!
I think the time I invest into submerging myself into the art of that time really helps! I accumulated a library of old print media that I study up and down-- I love it, I love seeing the process in the works, themselves 🥺
So, I tend to take what I learn from that and apply it to the processes that I use to make my art :D I layer the colors separate on different blend modes (which makes it look like printed ink!), shade the canvas like a piece of paper, bleed lines, desaturate and fade colors according to age and wear... And work with the idea that I'm not making digital art per se, but rather working with a digital medium while using traditional techniques!
And I spend about 3-5hrs give or take on single piece! But I've been doing this for abt 2 years now... dang.
Tumblr media
This is how I started! ^
Tumblr media
And one of my more recent pieces :3 there's a lot more going on, but you can still see similarities
It's super fun when you get into it! Next time you're at an antique store, pick up an old magazine or book. Look through the art and see if you can figure out how they made it (which colors they layered, if they printed it using riso, what tools were used: ink pen, brush, pencil...) I GO NUTS FOR IT IF IT'S NOT PLAIN TO SEE BY NOW LOL
And thanks for askin! :3

i have a question about your art style, whats the inspiration for drawing in primarily the same colour with darker shades for the line work (like you did in your recent young eskel/ geralt prompts)? it looks great btw im just always curious about other peoples reasons for their art
oh interesting question! if you’re talking about why everything is blue—i sketch almost exclusively with colored pencils (either these or these) simply because they are the most fun to sketch with! i like the feel of them much more than regular graphite, especially the minimal smudging and how nicely they play with ink. i switch color according to my whim but blue is traditional and also just one of my favorites. i do use the colored pencil sketches as bases for full-color drawings, but the doodle prompts & ask responses are meant to be quick(er) so for those i leave the pencils as they are! that is, blue.
if you’re talking about the solid fill color particularly, it’s just something i add in digitally to complement the pencils when i don’t intend to finish a drawing in any other way; the contrast against the white background helps the characters’ silhouettes pop! see the difference:
Tumblr media
it also makes the thing look more finished despite still just being a sketch. plus, a non-white fill color lets me add some subtle noise or texture if i feel like it! i think it looks the best if it’s roughly the same hue as the lines—imo for something like this a contrasting hue adds visual confusion—so, also blue.
i’ve been doing this for a while so i don’t really remember but i’m about 95% sure i picked it up after using clipping masks for digital coloring? you know, filling a figure with a solid tone and then clipping layers to the base fill layer so you can color without going outside of the lines. the solid base fill always looked pretty rad even without colors so i started making it a purposeful aesthetic choice!

hello! i've been following you for quite a while now and i love seeing your works on my feed, especially your tsumugi ahogecopter is EVERYTHING i live for 🥺 hope you don't mind me asking, how did you learn how to do art? i really wish i knew how to draw, and i would absolutely love to learn, but i have no idea where to start?? the best i've always done are stick figures but i would love to eventually do a3 fanart like you 😭
Hi, anon dear! Wow, thanks so much <3 I don't really consider myself a proficient fanart person, but I'd be happy to share my process!
Drawing has always been one of my hobbies since junior high school, so like most people, I started out with traditional pencil and paper art. So, cliché as it sounds, you really only learn to art by practicing!. As my hobby grew, I switched to digital art on PC. So first off, I'd like to recommend this drawing app, Sketchbook. It's great for beginning digital artists since it’s features are simple, so for the sake of this post, I'll be doing my step-by-step process in this app. (typically for more detailed and intricate sketches that I like to take my time with, though, I prefer MediBang).
I’ll use an older sketch of mine as example
1. Get reference pictures
Most people aren’t able to just art whatever they think of, and I am no exception. Even when I’m familiar with a character, I still gather reference pictures for when I draw^^ What I look for in reference pictures are the unique/distinguishable features of a character and the poses.
2. Rough sketch
I use a pencil brush, with a size of at least 2.5 for my rough sketches. What’s important in the rough sketch is the line of action and the general details. Think of the shapes you form your drawing from. No need to worry about it looking pretty.
Tumblr media
3. Lineart
This is usually what takes me longest, since I always want to get the details just right. My tip for making lineart is using dark red or dark blue for your lineart, not straight up black. Red and blue blend better^^ For my lineart, I use an inking pen brush and use size 2-3. Change the transparency of your rough sketch and do an outline on another layer. Then clean up your lineart and add details as needed, always checking back to your reference pics. Look for more reference pics as you think of new details! I always do this when I think of how folds work on clothing.
Tumblr media
4. Base color
For base color, I usually just use a paint bucket tool. Saves time^^
Tumblr media
5. Shading & highlights
This one requires a bit of color theory, but for beginners, I suggest just using a darker/lighter shade of the original color when shading. Think of where there should be shadows or light, based on light source. Again, reference pics as needed so you know how light works!!
Tumblr media
6. After-effects
After-effects I apply are usually things like glow, transparency, and texture. This step probably takes me second longest since I like to play around and experiment with tons of different brushes and filters. Even something as simple as transparency of a layer can be very effective IMO!
Tumblr media
One piece of advice that I think is important for people getting into fanart is that you shouldn't pressure yourself too much to develop your own art style right away. You're essentially making your own version of another work, so there's bound to be similarities to the original. Furthermore, you're still learning how to draw! And one of the best ways to learn how to draw IMO (from a non-professional standpoint) is by copying other artist's styles & techniques. Several mangakas started out this way, so don't feel too guilty about it! (Note that there is a huge difference between copying and tracing, btw!! Tracing is a BIG NO!) Once you feel comfortable enough, you can try combining different techniques and looks that you like best to develop your own style :)
a;slkhg;adsjf I’m not very good at tutorials;; huhu hope this helped somehow, anon dear! Hope to see your A3! fanart circulating around in the tag~
