JONH SIL- i mean Treasure Planet movie...

A Disney movie review? Well, yes, I’m one of those people who haven’t seen certain things of great importance. I really like Disney movies, obviously not all of them, but many are part of my childhood. But in this case, no, I had NEVER seen Treasure Planet, and I have to say that, indeed, it’s one of Disney’s best movies, and now it hurts me to know it was a flop back in the day. I already knew the story of the movie’s failure and also that it’s considered a cult classic, but I never had the chance to watch it… Until now. I was bored at work, so I put it on. It’s one of Disney’s most beautiful movies, and that’s saying a lot because the bar is high. The whole storyline about grieving the absence of a father and how they show it in Jim’s flashback is a delight, and you truly feel the pain both from the protagonist and his mother.

But even though, yes, the movie is great, it’s not one of my favorites, and it’s not the main reason I’m making a log about it… The reason is John Silver, JOHN SILVER IS THE BEST DISNEY VILLAIN AND ONE OF THE BEST CHARACTERS I’VE EVER SEEN!!! (In my opinion). He’s easily the best antagonist I’ve seen in an animated movie, and I’ve seen many. Since I was a kid, my favorite Disney villains were always Scar and Ursula, but now Silver has shot up to the top spot. He’s such a human character; he’s not completely evil, but he’s not good either. And the words of encouragement he gives Jim when he’s at his lowest are pure cinema, not to mention his character’s resolution is absolutely perfect. He redeems himself by losing the treasure and saving Jim’s life, leading to that beautiful goodbye hug at the end of the movie… An antagonist who thought he lost his heart because of his dream… HE’S THE BEST CHARACTER I’VE SEEN IN AN ANIMATED MOVIE IN A LONG TIME, and I missed out on him for over 20 years. I’m a disgrace XD. I swear, I’m going to watch it again just to fully focus on Silver. I mean, at the end, when Silver leaves Morph with Jim, the look on his face as they say goodbye shows genuine sadness. I want to see more of this character.

Here's a short wishlist of wanted interactions for Silver.

Jim - Give this man his son. I personally HC that John had a late wife who passed unexpectedly-- his son would've been Jim's age, give or take a few years.

Treasure Planet Characters - Dopplers, BEN, his crew-- honestly anyone. I'm also eager for characters with TP verses!

Rise of the Guardians/GOC Characters - If you think about Treasure Planet as a relic of the Golden Age-- you kinda see where I'm going with this. Let Silver meet the Guardians, maybe Pitch, hell even a MiM [though he might go full dad on Mimmy].

King Triton - So Jim/Ariel is a popular crossover ship. I raise you Silver/Triton. A pirate and a merman? Also both of them are dads who kinda struggle connecting to their kids. Both are widowers-- I have such thoughts.

Green Lanterns - They're space cops. He's a space criminal. Imagine him && a GL getting stuck somewhere and forced to work together. Maybe the GL lets him go in the end since they saved each other's lives.

Gravity Falls - Ford traveled dimensions. Who says he didn't come to a world where spaceships ride through the Etherium? Maybe he and Silver met when they were both young and worked together for a while. Ford has a rap sheet-- and Silver is a bad influence. Absolutely open to buddies or shipping shit. Samurai Jack - A Scotsman. Blease. In my SJ AU-- Silver is part of a crew of pirates who help Jack along his journey. He and the Scotsman have had work done by the same mechanism and bonded in a way similar to Armstrong and Curtis.

Oh boy, I love pedantic quibbling! In full sincerity it is my favourite form of fandom and I enjoy sharing it as much as receiving it, please don't feel selfconscious about that : )

You're right, Chris is fourteen when he gets adopted! I seem to have misremembered the number by a decade, and "came" for "returned", which makes things with Fraser a little less Treasure Planet, tragically, and things with the various ghosts in the house more like The Shining. Although the Fraser Treasure Planetosity may also be a lot stronger this way depending on your mileage -- for lack of macaroni art there's a (terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad) TP-canon-matching Long John Silver process, which ends in what are absolutely devastating flames.

I don't think we know about how long Fraser has had his house in Cultsim because the Aspirant doesn't care, but he doesn't have a Hush House desk or room that I've found yet (or that anyone who's much of a lore guy has written about, although I'm only a bit past the bridge that you feed inks to), so on balance it's probable Christopher grew up there. One might also note that Strathcoyne's bust and his distillery's whisky both have a Scale aspect, which in Hush House (again now that I've played more) seems to be localized to collection items and individual rooms and desks belonging to private persons, for obvious horological reasons.

Also Hush House's only house alcohol (with an obvious ludonarratively consistent source, i.e. not brewed from memories, abstract knowledge, and random moor plants), now that I've finally found the cellar and revised that misapprehension too, is a wine, although apparently not a very good one.

Ricardo Milagro, traveller, rascal, Musgrave's gardener, managed a creditable wine from Brancrug grapes. Cornwall has never really been wine country, and the tradition was unevenly maintained, but the Curia of the Isle kept a good cellar.

The librarian Christopher would know seems to have been an F (I now remember that the early teaser letter was what I built all that on, but for some reason I recalled it as a findable early book I must have lost, which as you've just shown is false -- the vagaries of memory!), but after learning more about Fraser, rereading this thing (much too concerned and warm for a consequence of that parting), rereading the Motley Tower descriptions and sorting out more of the librarian chronology (I too am an aficionado of putting guys in niches), I have realized it was emphatically not him but probably (based on the way she talks about the Curia) whoever Serena Blackwood, Librarian, was. This does tell us her first initial, which is still nice, but she was very much not Fraser. Mea culpa I suppose!

Also the Motley Tower flavour text seems to have changed in the recent update, along with the locations of some busts (? I have never seen this Abra Southey where I now find her before), to

The physician Natan lived here in the fifteenth century - and his family after that, tolerated by the monks - until King Henry dissolved the founfation and granted the Isle to Hendrik. Hendrik turfed them out of the tower and furnished the place more to his own taste, but when Christopher Illopoly moved in four hundred years later, he restored what he could. Illopoly wrote at the time of his sympathy, as a rootless foundling, for the outcast Natan: 'I don't know what I am, but I don't think I'm English.'

Earlier on I could've sworn there wasn't a dubitative there, the description read 'I know I'm not', but now I suppose the minor edit reflects a small change in the circumstances of the whole orphaning situation. Which might have implications about Christopher's age when orphaned or Fraser's Fraserosity, dealer's choice :)

Anyway what all this does to the Christophraser family dynamic is that:

1) Christopher kept a beeswax bust of his surrogate father in his weird, surrealist little Christopher hutch at Hush House -- to remember the good times? To shout at? To look upon and mourn what could have been?

2) Christopher brought a bunch of his diaries to Hush House and left them and possibly this bust (why would a decidedly not Woims library have a memorial to a Woim from outside the resident families?) in Fserena's keeping, possibly because he in fact did not want to leave anything personal at Strathcoyne's Residence, less possibly because he was enamoured of her personal beef with the pumpkin guys and thought it might help, possibly both

3) Fserena tried to write him a consolation letter to dissuade him from obsessing about Teresa's life decisions when he got too curious about the Inks of Conclusion, and they apparently had a warm enough relationship that she was willing to tell him things the Curia would probably be upset to learn she told him, although that may have been related to the Cucurbit drama I haven't found more on yet

4) Fraser is still active on the occult scene and maintains a personal library at his house in the Aspirant's time, which I think is contemporary with the Librarian

5) the rewards from breaking into this house include a tome of Teresa's Locksmith's Dream and a volume of Traveling at Night, which shows us at least that after the fact, Fraser wanted some sort of a record to hand of the incident, possibly for sentimental reasons

6) he also has the Wainscot Histories (SH tome) and Hersault's 'Underplaces', and Alessandro LaCroce's journal (for learning Fucine, which Teresa speaks and writes in, but Fraser evidently at one point didn't)

7) by implication, he might have absolutely no idea he made his son so fucking miserable, and in point of fact he might have formed an attachment that to him seemed like a totally normal progression from mentor-apprentice to father-son -- not going to diagnose him because we don't know, but when I was a teen my mum and a younger me for example had a roommate together who was a bit of a crotchety old mole, an academic in a Fraserian vein. That guy was also very distant, obsessed with how useful I was or not, and had some weird opinions. At some point he too decided I was his child, and proceeded to give absolutely no normal human evidence of this (or for that matter evidence that he was interested in my mum) at any point in time outside of arguments. this is my mind palace template for comprehending Fraser and I think it is an immensely powerful dynamic for a wizard to have with his wizardling. There are so so many people who would have so many more rewarding relationships with children if they would Just Get Therapy and I think the Fraser family is a very strong example

And now the why I mentioned point 7: about Illopoly, I do think Christopher just made it up -- but it's also possible he got it from another History, which seems to have been Fraser's Thing :)
