I found an interesting, faintly thorny plant with delicately pale purple flower growing around my compost. After a little searching I identified it as Solanum carolinense, commonly called "Carolina Horsenettle", but also affectionately referred to as "the Apple of Sodom" or "the Devil's Tomato". I am still a fairly miserable gardener, but I have been blessed with the favor of nightshades.

A reminder for those of us with cats at Easter that lilies of ANY kind are BAD for cats. Some species such as Calla, Peace and Peruvian do not cause kidney damage or death like Easter and daylilies, but they can still cause irritation and gastrointestinal issues if ingested...

Wild rabbits eat belladonna on purpose as self-defense to poison predators. Wild rabbits who live in the same areas as belladonna’s natural growing range are immune to belladonna’s deadly alkaloids because they produce an enzyme called atropinesterase that breaks down the atropine in the belladonna they ingest. The darker the rabbit’s fur, the more poisonous it may be.

I guess my thoughts about plant toxicity to pets are really just. we gotta start dividing plants up into a category that is 'may cause some minor discomfort or barfing if eaten' type toxicity and 'vet visit worthy needing medical intervention to save their life' type toxicity.
neither of those are pleasant for an animal to experience so keep plants out of chompy animal's reach at your discretion but there are certainly some plants that are on the level of 'just keep it out of reach of the animal' and others that are 'do not even cross the threshold wearing clothes you handled this plant in'

Plant of the Day
Wednesday 4 November 2024
The late flowering Aconitum carmichaelii (Arendsii Group) 'Arendsii' (monk's hood, wolfsbane, devil's helmet) has thicker stems than most other Aconitum species and so has less need of staking. The cultivar name honours the German nurseryman Georg Arends (1863-1952) who first bred this cultivar in about 1945 at his nursery at Ronsdorf-Wuppertal near Cologne, Germany. Be aware that this plant is toxic if eaten and skin contact should be avoided so wear gloves when handling.

monster design for the "toxic meltdown" prompt from @catmask and @frogcroaks's MONSTER MAYHEM
(and being used for Project Breaker)
HCA-888 AVARICE, also known as the "Illusion of Control", "False Yggdrasil", and "247 Years and More" is a Storie that desires to take more and more land. Many powerful people have joined the ranks of the snakes on its crown after giving up their land. People with hope have looked upon it and dug their own graves at its roots to try and do... something.
Its influence should not be seen as an easy means to get rich quick. You only realize how far you've gone when you look back and see no one behind you.
Design notes:
TOXIC MELTDOWN -> Despair of late-stage capitalism/ climate change, taking advantage of "if i just work hard enough". toxic work environment and a mental breakdown/meltdown.
the eyes are the fruits it gives to exchange "power" (gaining more land, tricking people into working for it)
888 resembles the snakes eating each other, but it also represents financial success and prosperity
The rainbows are supposed to resemble oil spills, but its supposed to trick people into thinking it is beautiful / the way to get a better future
the snakes eating each other represents general greed / putting down or exploiting others to gain power, but also how companies just sort of.. eat each other
its a tree because money is the "root of all evil"/"money grows on trees", and the idea of the Original Sin starting capitalism (thanks Moby Dick)
