A grandmother in Ohio is facing a felony assault charge after admitting to intentionally shooting her six-month-old granddaughter in the eye.
Mia Desiree Harris, 43, pled guilty on Tuesday to the assault charge, according to Law&Crime. She also faced two charges relating to assaults of other family members but both of those were dismissed following her plea.
The violence unfolded in the early hours of December 9 last year. Police responded to a report in Liberty Township, 25 miles north of Cincinnati, that an infant had been shot at around 1:50am. A woman on the phone told a 911 operator that “my baby’s been shot, my baby’s been shot,” according to WXIX.
The 911 operator then asked the woman to confirm that her baby has been shot. “Yes,” she says. “Lord please save my baby.”
Responding officers found the child with a gunshot wound to the head. Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones told WXIX at the time that the child had been shot through the eye.
The infant was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but survived and is on the road to recovery, according to Journal-News.
The sheriff’s office said that Harris also allegedly hit and shot at several family members before “intentionally shooting the child.”
A law enforcement incident report alleged that Harris was so determined to enter the room where her granddaughter was sleeping that she fired multiple shots through a wooden door and then broke down it’s splintered remains to get to the child.
Detective Daniel Turner provided further context during a preliminary hearing in 2023. After breaking into the room, Harris shot the child’s mother in the head — the bullet narrowly grazed her skull, he said, according to WCPO — and then shot the child. Harris then lifted the child off the bed and smiled as she handed the infant to its wounded mother.
Harris fled the scene before deputies arrived but witnesses identified her to law enforcement. She was located and taken into custody shortly after the incident.
When the woman was asked why she wanted to shoot the child, she told deputies: “That was not my grandbaby. Sorry, not sorry,” WCPO reported.
She then said that her family was “trying to take all of her money and then leave,” and insisted that she “was not going to allow that to happen.”
Sheriff Jones told local broadcaster WXIX that he could see no possible justification for what occurred.
“It wasn’t an accident. It was on purpose. This is one of the most disgusting, vile criminal acts I’ve ever seen, shooting a 6-month-old baby. What makes it even worse is this is the baby’s grandmother,” he said. “She went and shot this child and doesn’t appear to have any remorse whatsoever. I feel sorry for the baby, the family, everybody that’s dealing with this … this is as bad as it gets.”
Harris is being held in Butler County Jail on a $1.5million bond. The maximum penalty for a first-degree felony assault in Ohio is 11 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

The Hatchet Man
Around 1815, a tailor named Andrew Hellman emigrated from Germany to Virginia. He took Mary Abel as his wife and together they moved at least twice, first to Carroll County, Ohio, then to Logan County. Along the way the two of them had three children, Louisa, born in 1822; Henry in 1824; and John in 1828.
All sounds pretty normal, right? In actuality, Hellman was a lunatic who beat his wife mercilessly. When his first son was born he disowned him because he thought his wife was cheating on him with someone else. He tried to poison her but was unsuccessful.
Finally, in 1839, Andrew Hellman had his first success with homicide. He used poison again, and this time, his children Louisa and John succumbed. Henry lived only because of Mary’s valiant efforts to resuscitate him.
One can only imagine what a horrible life the Hellman’s had at a time when beating your wife wasn’t considered a big deal. Even the dead children didn’t do much to raise the alarm, apparently, because Andrew was still free when, on September 26, 1839, he hacked his wife to death with an axe. Henry once again slipped past by having the good sense to stay away that day.
They finally arrested Hellman for the hatchet murder, and they took him to jail in Bellefontaine. He then proceeded to escape before he could be tried and ride his horse to safety. He fled to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1840, and began the next chapter in his weird, psychopathic life.
In Baltimore, he took a new name, Adam Horn, married a new woman named Malinda Hinkle and moved into a house with her. They had just a couple of years to enjoy each other’s company before Hellman/Horn got sick of her and once again chopped his wife into pieces with a hatchet in March of 1843. He spread pieces of her all over the property, including an upstairs room and in a shallow grave near the orchard. Her head was never found at all. They say he saw ghost lights around the places where he hid her body parts and was scared into fleeing, therefore revealing himself.
They hung him on January 12, 1844. He was buried next to Louisa and his kids in Logan County’s Harrod Cemetery, near Huntsville, where his tombstone is said to glow with spectral light.
But the real legend is about Andrew Hellman himself, who haunts the area where he once terrorized his first family. Specifically, he roams the very rural McArthur Township Road 56, just northwest of Bellefontaine, with his hatchet in hand ready to kill anyone unlucky enough to be in his area at night. He particularly hates women. So if your car breaks down on Township Road 56 some night…be afraid.

9:28 - THE STORY OF SPIDERWEBS
Inspired by the episode “Our Mrs Reynolds” from the TV show Firefly
Talked about it in episode #6 of In the Verse.
Mal: Now, think real hard. You've been birddoggin' this township a while now. They wouldn't mind a corpse of you. Now, you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal, I swear, by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you.
Spiderwebs Lyrics
Bad men are bird dogging our town Dogging our town, Bird dogging our town Bad men are bird dogging our town We’ll lay a trap for them.
We’re gonna spin a spiderweb Spiderweb, Spiderweb We’re gonna spin a spiderweb That’s how we will catch them.
I’ll wear a soft cotton dress A soft cotton dress, soft cotton dress I’ll wear a soft cotton dress With a pretty floral bonnet on top
Will shoot them down in the spider web Spiderweb, spiderweb Will shoot them down in the spider web And celebrate our win
A pretty little girl has lured me in Lured me in, lured me in A pretty little girl has lured me in Declared her love for me
She caught my heart in a spiderweb Spiderweb , Spiderweb She caught my heart in a spiderweb Now how will this all end
She’s leading me to the end of the line End of the line, end of the line She’s leading me to the end of the line We'll put things right again
I’ll break free from her spiderweb Spiderweb, spiderweb I’ll break free from her spiderweb And never kiss a girl again
Come here little lady, May I meet you I meet you, I meet you Come here little lady may I meet you Guess it begins again
It’s all a game of spiderwebs Spiderwebs, spiderwebs It’s all a game of spiderwebs And everybody falls in

“NO HARD LABOR AT JAIL MONOTONY MORE PUNISHING,” Ottawa Citizen. July 13, 1940. --- Idle Life Is Not the Good Life Ottawa Particularly When Encircled by Cement Walls and Iron Bars ---- By DAVID J. LEWIS. MALE PRISONERS when in the county jail no longer wield heavy sledge  hammers over a rockpile. But even more punishing is the dreadful monotony of having nothing to do - no way to kill time, which passes so slowly that every minute seems like an hour.
So they yearn, most of them, for the good old days when they could have relieved their boredom by breaking stone for the roads, a job which, in this machine age, is done more efficiently, and cheaper, by machinery. Cost of moving the stone from the jail to the townships was more expensive to the townships than buying it.
Sheriff Sam Crooks and Governor Alonzo Dawson gave me the privilege of going through the jail building, where the prisoners tussle mightily with idleness, talking, smoking, doing anything they can think of to make the hands of the clock turn faster, and doing it, apparently, without much success.
Not a Happy Life Take it from them that the idle life is not the good life - not, anyway, when it is encircled by cement walls and iron bars.
I saw three of the 78 prisoners incarcerated in the county bastille meandering up and down their cell corridor trying to sing "South of the Border.” They had just had one meal and all they had to do was wait for the next.
Another 20 prisoners were in the dining hall downstairs. They were sitting about in their blue overalls, the prison uniform, laboriously engaged in the tedious task of wasting time. They obeyed the turnkey's order to line up but they didn't make haste. When you have three months to walk 10 feet and turn around, you don't hurry.
One would expect the turnkeys would have a tough time getting chefs for the kitchen. The question is further complicated by extremely rapid turnover of prisoners. As soon as they get one trusty broken in as chief cook, his ticket et admission expires and they have to look around for a new one.
Food Looked Good. Despite this the food looks good at "Castle Dawson". However I wasn't allowed to eat any. Turnkeys have to bring their own meals and visiting reporters go hungry.
Here is a sample day's menu: Breakfast, porridge, milk and sugar, bread and tea. Dinner: meat, potatoes, carrots, tea and bread. Supper: sausages and potatoes, beans, dessert with molasses, tea and bread.
The governor showed me the garden where much of the food is grown. The garden Iooks a lot better than most amateur efforts in spite of the disinterested attitude of the gardeners. Enough carrots were grown last year to keep the jail supplied until the middle of February.
What Trusties Do. Trusties run the jail workshop, the laundry, and barbershop. They are given the privilege of running around loose Inside the jail during the day and they are not locked into the cells until 8.30, an hour and a half after the others.
The cells are snug enough in their way. On the south side they are three feet by 10 and on the north twice as wide. The beds seem to have been designed for strength and durability rather than for strict comfort. A pillow and a couple of blankets are supplied, but search failed to disclose anything in the way of a mattress.
I tried out one of the beds for about 30 seconds. Lying on the bed I considered the lot of the Indian fakir on his couch of nails. There seemed little to choose between the two. I learned later that prisoners are granted the prerogative of sleeping under or between the two blankets.
There is no oversleeping. The boys are awakened at six o'clock and get their breakfasts a quarter of an hour later. They clean up their cells and corridors after that and have dinner at 11.30. Sup- per is served at 5.45 and they are locked up in their cells at six. They are allowed to read magazines and books until lights-out at nine. Now and then a bibliophile takes up residence in the house of correction, but very few prisoners bother with anything more than the pictures.
Are Allowed Tobacco. Everyone at the jail was smoking The prisoners can buy tobacco twice a week and they are chewing it or smoking is from dawn to dusk. If they ever stop It is because their funds are too low to buy it or because they were too intemperate after the last date of sale.
Every manjack of them is waiting impatiently the time when he will be able to buy his tobacco again. ////
“lan Sutherland Jail Governor,” Ottawa Citizen. September 4, 1940.  --- Will Succeed Alonzo Dawson --- Appointment of Ian A. Sutherland as governor of the Carleton County jail on Nicholas street is expected to be announced within few days.
Mr. Sutherland. an employe of the Canadian National Railways, is secretary of the West Ottawa Liberal Association and has taken an active part in politics in this district for some time.
In his new post, a provincial appointment, he will succeed Alonzo G. Dawson, jail governor for the last 29 years and prior to that clerk of Nepean township, who is slated for retirement.
Governor Dawson has been receiving a salary of $2,000 per annum. The position also carries with it a free apartment in the jail building, heat and light. As governor of the jail Mr. Sutherland will be under the direct supervision of Sheriff Samuel Crooks in Ottawa.
“New Governor of Jail Takes Special Course,” Ottawa Citizen. September 9, 1940. ---- Ian Sutherland, whose appointment as governor of the Carleton County jail was announced recently, is in Toronto receiving special instruction preparatory to resuming his duties. After this, special course he will make a tour of Ontario penal institutions and will return to the Capital in about three weeks, Mr. Sutherland is replacing A. G. Dawson, the present governor, who is retiring.

New Jersey Counties
There are 21 counties in New Jersey. These counties together contain 565 municipalities, or administrative entities composed of clearly defined territory; 250 boroughs, 52 cities, 15 towns, 244 townships, and 4 villages. In New Jersey, a county is a local level of government between the state and municipalities. County government in New Jersey includes a Board of County Commissioners, sheriff, clerk, and surrogate (responsible for uncontested and routine probate), all of which are elected officials. Counties organized under the Optional County Charter Law may also have an elected county executive. Counties traditionally perform state-mandated duties such as the maintenance of jails, parks, and certain roads. The site of a county's administration and courts is called the county seat.

A lot of places are named after historical events, battles, and people, so keep that in mind. God/Goddess names tied to your world also work well. Places are also often named after things that the area is known for, like Georgia being known for its peaches.
My brain was fried by the end of this so feel free to add more!
I hope you find this reference helpful and good luck world-building!

                                       Policing Memories of
                                  Garry Crawford Circa 1962
                                              Part IV
When our Detachment was still in the Roy’s Apartment building, I remember one time we were subject to an inspection by a certain Chief Superintendent from Toronto GHQ. This would be an inspection to ascertain if we were following Standing Orders. Standing Orders at this time consisted of a couple of looseleaf binders. As in all things, Standing Orders change from time to time, this is done by special bulletins that would be sent out from GHQ. It was up to each Detachment to refer to these bulletins which would be numbered and refer to a section in Standing Orders. Updating or changing the order to have a further or updated meaning. One thing about Dick Wood, he was very good at keeping things up to date. At any rate the particular Chief Superintendent was known to dig until he found fault then being very outgoing with his remarks. While looking through the files during his inspection this particular Chief, found one file that he thought was not in order. I was in the Detachment when he loudly called it to Dick’s attention. Dick kind of dropped his head then moved into his office and opened the file drawer,  digging out a bulletin. I could see what was going on Lol. Dick walked over to the Chief and handed the bulletin which showed Dick was right, as he did so he said: Of course I could have misinterpreted this bulleting Sir. The Chief took one look at the bulletin, seen that Dick was right and replied: Aren’t you a generous B!!%&$1d. I felt a laugh coming on and headed into the washroom. Dick said afterward, I just should have let it alone, but I couldn’t.
During the first few years at Warren there was a real push on Traffic enforcement. Each Officer was expected to check a certain number of vehicles for equipment violations, plus do regular enforcement. We had one Sergeant Major who would drive out from Sudbury and ride in the cruiser with the officer on duty. He would get the member to stop his vehicle, then he would flag over oncoming cars for the officer to check. It took us a little while to catch on, but after a while we realized that if we did a real thorough job of checking the first couple of vehicles, he had to deal with the row of cars he had pulled over. Some of the people would get pretty hostile. He would stop waving people over and tell us to finish up. I was not particularly fond of traffic enforcement but I loved doing investigations of all kinds. Some of the members did not like doing investigations but preferred traffic enforcement, so it all worked out. At the time we had a lot of lone people living in the Detachment Area, both those that were more or less hermits and lived in some kind of shack or other flimsy dwelling and those that lived alone on small farms. I made it a habit to make contact with these people and find out about them, where their next of kin was and where they came from. I found it to my advantage in investigations and especially so when doing an investigation concerning these individuals. Most of them were very interesting people.
The other thing I did was to keep a warning book on individuals that were local. I can admit now to giving warnings to locals. I would give each one a warning for the first infraction I caught them doing, for each year. The exception being if they were involved in a traffic accident. I found they were much quicker at giving you information if they felt you had given them a break. People have a different feeling towards you if they think you have been fair.
I remember one fatal hit and run accident I investigated. Two friends were at a house party together. It was at one of their homes. The person who was later the victim, left his home and walked out onto the Concession Road just over a hill from the house. He knew his chum would be leaving shortly and wanted to give him a scare. The victim lay down on the roadway. The chum came shooting over the hill and drove right over the victim. He stopped took a look at his friend, panicked then left driving home. I was called to investigate, got a list of everyone who had been at the party and started checking. When I checked the chums vehicle I found blood spots and hair under the fender well. I have included a picture of that fender well. I questioned the chum and he subsequently admitted to what had happened. He was charged with hit and run under the Criminal Code, convicted and received 18 months in jail. It was a rather lengthy process, between the investigation, the court proceeding, trial and the serving of the sentence.  When the chum got out of jail, he got married and sent me an invitation to the wedding. I have told the forgoing stories, not to show what a great guy I was as some times I was not, but to point out two things. One was that in some of what should be serious matters there is humor and two that if you treat people in a proper manner and do your job, every once and a while when you least expect it some one will say thanks. Sometime it is in the most subtle way. Other times they will hate you. The good times make it all worth while.
                          The line Fences Act
In the old Ontario Provincial Statutes we were required to enforce, there was a section in the Line Fences Act which stated that in Organized Townships the owner of cattle were required to fence in their livestock to control them, it also stated that in an Unorganized Township you were required to put up fences to keep the livestock out of your property.
I had met an old farmer north of Markstay in Loughrin Township who raised fields of Peonies. He sold these flowers to various nurseries in and around Sudbury. His name was Charlie Hysert. I think Charlie was 94 or 95 when I first met him. He would go to his Markstay farm every summer and raise these peonies. He would spend the winters with his son somewhere down in the Ottawa Valley.
There was a neighboring farmer who had a herd of about 15 cattle. These cattle were allowed to run free and foraged throughout the township. We will just call the neighbor Joe for the purpose of this story. Every year we would get a call from Charlie as the cattle would break down his fence and get into his field of peonies. I think I was sent there several times over sequent years. I would explain the law to Charlie then go to Joe and explain that Charlie did have good fences up however the cattle would simply break the fence down to get in at the flowers. Joe’s reply would simply state that he was allowed to let his cattle forage freely.
The year Charlie turned 97 we received a call that Charlie had poisoned three of Joe’s cattle. I proceeded up to investigate. Sure enough there were three dead cows on Charlie’s property. Charlie explained to me that he had purchased several bags of Paris Green Insecticide for his garden. He had stored it in his garage with the doors closed. The cattle had broken onto his property and forced open the doors to his garage and ate the Paris Green. Paris Green is similar to arsenic and it poisoned the cattle. I could see the twinkle in old Charlie’s eyes, but I could not see a way to prove intent  on his part. I went to Joe and explained the situation and suggested he find a way to control his cattle from breaking down Charlie’s fences. That was the last time we got a call about the cattle.
In September of that year I was making a patrol through that back country and stopped in to see how Charlie was doing. He had hired a fellow with a smaller caterpillar tractor to pull an old Cockshutt breaker plow that had been built in the early part of the century. Charlie was breaking new land. The following Spring Charlie did not return. I found out from the fellow who owned the caterpillar tractor that during the winter old Charlie had fallen and broken his hip. He never recovered.

Suspect tries to drown police dog in Medina County creek MEDINA, Ohio — The Medina County Sheriff’s Office released disturbing drone video that appears to show a burglary suspect trying to drown a police dog in a creek. “He was basically trying to harm the K9 or even kill the K9,” said Captain Kevin Ross. The suspect, Shane McCloud, 29, of Akron, was booked into the Medina County Jail following a dramatic chase that lasted about an hour. He’s facing multiple charges, including resisting arrest, burglary, and assault for the attack on the 7-year-old German Shepherd named Blek. “We definitely think he is part of the department, which he is, and he’s just like any other officer,” Ross said. The drone shows the suspect, who was being pursued by deputies, go into Chippewa Creek in Guilford Township Friday morning. Blek’s handler, Deputy Ryan Gibbons, sent the dog into the creek in an attempt to keep the suspect at bay, but McCloud managed to grab the K9 and hold him underwater for several seconds, deputies said. “When the dog is swimming, you don’t have the power,” Ross said. “You don’t have the engagement that you would normally have on land.” In the video the dog appears to be disoriented as he walked towards the bank, moments after he was let go by the suspect. Several officers, including Gibbons, went into the creek to attend to Blek. McCloud was apprehended moments later near the creek. “I wanted to make sure he was in custody and no longer able to hurt any of us. If he’s willing to do that to an animal, what’s he willing to do to people,” Gibbons told News 5. McCloud was taken to Cleveland Clinic Medina General to be checked out before he was transported to jail. Another EMS team examined Blek who was then taken to a veterinarian. Doctors told Gibbons to watch the dog for unusual behavior in case he had water in his lungs. Other than a limp and some soreness, the K9 seemed to be doing okay and was back to work on Monday. “It takes a lot of bravery and a lot of heart that this K9 has,” Ross said. “He is an officer here even though he’s a K9.” The incident started around 8:15 a.m. Friday after a woman called to report a burglary at her trailer home on Greenwich Road. “I got him in my house. I haven’t been home. He was in my house,” the woman told a 911 operator. The Medina County Sheriff’s Office responded and activated a $30,000 drone which was donated by a private citizen. The drone has two cameras, including one that uses infrared technology. Drone operator Detective Larry Covey tracked McCloud as he went into a wooded area. Ross said deputies on foot caught up to him, but McCloud didn’t cooperate. “He wasn’t taking his hands out of his pockets, wasn’t showing his hands. We weren’t sure if he had a gun,” Ross said. Investigators said McCloud got up and ran, crossed Greenwich Road, went in and out of the creek, before going back into the creek after the dog was released. While deputies were outraged by what they saw on the video, they are also grateful that Blek has no serious injuries and the suspect was captured. The Seville Police Department, Westfield Police Department, Medina County Drug Task Force, and Seville-Guilford Fire Department assisted in the case. window.fbAsyncInit = function() FB.init( appId : '117981068372285', xfbml : true, version : 'v2.9' ); ; (function(d, s, id) var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js"; js.async = true; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); (document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Source link Orbem News #County #Creek #dog #Drown #Medina #medinacounty #medinacountysheriff'soffice #Police #policedog #Suspect

House managers wrap up case against Trump (Washington Post) House managers on Thursday wrapped up their case against former president Donald Trump, imploring the Senate to convict him while warning that he could stoke violence again. Trump’s legal team is poised to respond on Friday, arguing that he should be acquitted. They are expected to use only one of two allotted days. A verdict could come as early as the weekend. The developments came on the third day of an impeachment trial in which Democrats have charged Trump with “incitement of insurrection” for his role in the Jan. 6 violent takeover of the Capitol.
California Is Making Liberals Squirm (NYT) California is a remarkable place. It also has the highest poverty rate in the nation, when you factor in housing costs, and vies for the top spot in income inequality, too. The median price for a home in California is more than $700,000. As Bloomberg reported in 2019, the state has four of the nation’s five most expensive housing markets and a quarter of the nation’s homeless residents. In much of San Francisco, you can’t walk 20 feet without seeing a multicolored sign declaring that Black lives matter, kindness is everything and no human being is illegal. Those signs sit in yards zoned for single families, in communities that organize against efforts to add the new homes that would bring those values closer to reality. Poorer families—disproportionately nonwhite and immigrant—are pushed into long commutes, overcrowded housing and homelessness. Those inequalities have turned deadly during the pandemic. There is a danger—not just in California, but everywhere—that politics becomes an aesthetic rather than a program. It’s a danger on the right, where Donald Trump modeled a presidency that cared more about retweets than bills. But it’s also a danger on the left, where the symbols of progressivism are often preferred to the sacrifices and risks those ideals demand.
6 killed in 130-vehicle pileup on icy Texas interstate (AP) A massive crash involving more than 130 vehicles on an icy Texas interstate left six people dead and dozens injured Thursday amid a winter storm that dropped freezing rain, sleet and snow on parts of the U.S. At the scene of the crash on Interstate 35 near downtown Fort Worth, a tangle of semitrailers, cars and trucks had smashed into each other and had turned every which way, with some vehicles on top of others. The ice storm came as a polar vortex — swirling air that normally sits over the Earth’s poles — has moved near the U.S.-Canada border, resulting in colder weather farther south than usual, said Steve Goss, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
History of abuse for Mexican police unit in migrant massacre (AP) When state police in northern Mexico allegedly shot 19 people, including at least 14 Guatemalan migrants, to death in late January near the border with Texas, it was a tragedy that critics say authorities had been warned could come. In 2019, prosecutors charged that the same Tamaulipas state police unit, then operating under a different name, pulled eight people from their homes in the border city of Nuevo Laredo, posed them in clothing and vehicles to make them look like criminals, and shot them to death. Now, a dozen officers of the 150-member Special Operations Group, known by its Spanish initials as GOPES, have been ordered held for trial on charges they shot to death at least 14 Guatemalan migrants and two Mexicans on a rural road in the border township of Camargo. The bodies were then set afire and burned so badly that three other corpses are still awaiting identification. Authorities had ample warning of the problems in the unit, which was created last year from the remains of the special forces group accused of the 2019 killings and other atrocities. A federal legislator even filed a non-binding resolution in Mexico’s Congress in early January to protest beatings and robberies by the unit. “If back then they had done something, if any attention had been paid, perhaps today we would not be mourning the deaths of 19 people,” said Marco Antonio Mariño, vice president of the Tamaulipas Federation of Business Chambers.
Brazilian ballerina born without arms soars with her attitude (Reuters) When Vitória Bueno’s mother first dropped her off at ballet class, she worried about her five-year-old fitting in. Born without arms, Bueno’s dream of being a dancer seemed painfully unrealistic—especially in a small town in rural Brazil. But Bueno, now 16, focused on her assemblés, pirouettes and other technical challenges. She took up jazz and tap as well. Now a regular at the ballet academy in her hometown in the state of Minas Gerais, Bueno’s talent has made her a social media star and an inspiration to many. Watching her glide across the wooden stage, synchronized with her colleagues in a dazzle of green and white, it is easy to forget she dances without arms. More than just realizing a dream, the strength and flexibility gained through dance have proven crucial to Bueno, who does everything from brushing her teeth to picking items off the supermarket shelf with her feet. “There are things she can do with her feet that I can’t do with my hands,” said her stepfather, Jose Carlos Perreira. With over 150,000 Instagram followers, Bueno is glad to be a role model for others too. “We are more than our disabilities, so we have to chase our dreams,” she said, flashing a broad smile.
German children suffer from psychological issues in pandemic (AP) A new survey of children in Germany suggests that the stress and depravations of the coronavirus pandemic are taking a toll on their mental health, especially among those from underprivileged families, researchers said Wednesday. The study by the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf found about one in three German children are suffering from pandemic-related anxiety, depression or are exhibiting psychosomatic symptoms like headaches or stomach aches. Children and teenagers from poorer families and those with migrant roots are disproportionally affected, according to the study. “Children who were doing well before the pandemic and feel sheltered and comfortable within their families will get through this pandemic well,” said Ulrike Ravens-Sieberer, the head of the study and research director of the children’s psychiatric clinic at the university hospital.
Koo d’etat (Foreign Policy) Indian lawmakers are threatening to abandon Twitter in favor of Indian lookalike app Koo amid a dispute with the Silicon Valley company. The Indian government has ordered the removal of hundreds of Twitter accounts and posts in recent days over claims that users are spreading misinformation about ongoing farmer protests. On Wednesday, Twitter announced it would not comply with some takedown orders as it deemed them in contravention of Indian law. India’s IT ministry posted its displeasure with Twitter on rival app Koo, as a number of Indian leaders, including Trade Minister Piyush Goyal encouraged a Twitter exodus. The Koo app has seen a ten-fold increase in downloads as a result of the spat—a total of 3 million in the past two days.
They were accused of plotting to overthrow the Modi government. The evidence was planted, a new report says. (Washington Post) Key evidence against a group of Indian activists accused of plotting to overthrow the government was planted on a laptop seized by police, a new forensics report concludes, deepening doubts about a case viewed as a test of the rule of law under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. An attacker used malware to infiltrate a laptop belonging to one of the activists, Rona Wilson, before his arrest and deposited at least 10 incriminating letters on the computer, according to a report from Arsenal Consulting, a Massachusetts-based digital forensics firm that examined an electronic copy of the laptop at the request of Wilson’s lawyers. Many of the activists have been jailed for more than two years without trial under a stringent anti-terrorism law. Human rights groups and legal experts consider the case an attempt to suppress dissent in India, where government critics have faced intimidation, harassment and arrest during Modi’s tenure. Sudeep Pasbola, a lawyer representing Wilson, said the Arsenal report proved his client’s innocence and “destabilizes” the prosecution case against the activists. On Wednesday, Wilson’s lawyers included the report in a petition filed in the High Court of Bombay urging judges to dismiss the case against their client.
China to pull BBC News off the air, state broadcast regulator says (Washington Post) China’s broadcasting regulator has moved to pull BBC News off the air in the country over a “serious content violation,” the Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported Thursday. China’s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) said in an announcement on its website that the broadcaster, which is partly funded by the British state but editorially independent, had “undermined China’s national interests and ethnic solidarity.” The announcement, which arrived with the Lunar New Year holiday in China, followed recent disputes between Chinese officials and BBC News. It also came just a week after Britain’s media regulator pulled the Chinese state-run television channel CGTN off British airwaves because of alleged errors in an application to transfer its license to another company. In December, BBC News produced a report that alleged the forced labor of ethnic minority Uighurs in China’s cotton industry in Xinjiang. Chinese state media bristled at the work, calling it “fake news” and accusing the BBC of political bias.
Racialized surveillance (Foreign Policy) Following numerous reports of Chinese firms, including Huawei, singling out Uighurs in facial recognition, a Los Angeles Times/IPVM investigation found that Dahua, the world’s second-largest security camera manufacturer, provides Chinese police with “real-time warning for Uighurs” and informs them of “Uighurs with hidden terrorist inclinations.” In many parts of China, being Uighur is now effectively criminalized, with the few remaining Uighur residents of cities outside Xinjiang reporting routine harassment by police. The arrival of Uighurs, even mothers with children, in a new city or town prompts the arrival of the police and actions ranging from warnings to stay in their hotel or apartment to deportation back to Xinjiang. Dahua is rolling out its race-based systems to other countries, which may have their own least favored minorities to target.
Biden Announces Myanmar Sanctions (Foreign Policy) U.S. President Joe Biden has announced U.S. sanctions against Myanmar’s military junta, ten days after the military seized absolute power and arrested members of the country’s democratically-elected leadership. Biden is to freeze $1 billion in Myanmar’s state assets held in U.S. banks, with further sanctions expected to follow against a “first round of targets” this week. But Myanmar’s generals have endured sanctions before—including recent ones over the ethnic cleansing of its Rohingya minority—and so whatever the international community can muster is unlikely to dislodge them.
Digital siege: Internet cuts become favored tool of regimes (AP) When army generals in Myanmar staged a coup last week, they briefly cut internet access in an apparent attempt to stymie protests. In Uganda, residents couldn’t use Facebook, Twitter and other social media for weeks after a recent election. And in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, the internet has been down for months amid a wider conflict. Around the world, shutting down the internet has become an increasingly popular tactic of repressive and authoritarian regimes and some illiberal democracies. Digital rights groups say governments use them to stifle dissent, silence opposition voices or cover up human rights abuses. Regimes often cut online access in response to protests or civil unrest, particularly around elections, as they try to keep their grip on power by restricting the flow of information, researchers say. Last year there were 93 major internet shutdowns in 21 countries, according to a report by Top10VPN, a U.K.-based digital privacy and security research group. The list doesn’t include places like China and North Korea, where the government tightly controls or restricts the internet.
Japan Olympics chief who said women talk too much will resign over remarks, reports say (Washington Post) The head of the Tokyo Olympics organizing committee is set to resign, Japanese media reported on Thursday, after an uproar over sexist remarks he had made about women at a meeting last week. Mori, an 83-year-old former prime minister with a record of insensitive and sexist pronouncements, had tried to justify the lack of women at a senior level in the Japanese Olympic Committee by saying women talk too much at meetings and make them run on too long. The following day he apologized but showed no apparent remorse and said he had no intention of resigning. The comments provoked an unprecedented reaction in Japan, with more than 146,000 people signing an online petition calling on him to step down. Nearly 500 Olympic volunteers withdrew, and one poll found less than 7 percent of respondents thought Mori was qualified to continue in his role. The World Economic Forum ranks Japan 121st out of 153 countries in terms of gender parity, with the largest gender gap among advanced economies.
20 UN peacekeepers injured in an attack in central Mali (AP) An attack on a United Nations base in central Mali has injured at least 20 peacekeepers, the U.N. mission spokesman said Wednesday. The temporary U.N. base in Kerena, near Douentza, was the target of direct and indirect fire early Wednesday morning, Olivier Salgado said in a statement on Twitter. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Islamic extremists linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group stage regular attacks on U.N. peacekeepers and soldiers.
Salesforce declares the 9-to-5 workday dead, will let some employees work remotely from now on (The Verge) Cloud computing company Salesforce is joining other Silicon Valley tech giants in announcing a substantial shift in how it allows its employees to work. In a blog post published Tuesday, the company says the “9-to-5 workday is dead” and that it will allow employees to choose one of three categories that dictate how often, if ever, they return to the office once it’s safe to do so. The company joins other tech firms like Facebook and Microsoft that have announced permanent work-from-home policies in response to the coronavirus pandemic. “As we enter a new year, we must continue to go forward with agility, creativity and a beginner’s mind—and that includes how we cultivate our culture. An immersive workspace is no longer limited to a desk in our Towers; the 9-to-5 workday is dead; and the employee experience is about more than ping-pong tables and snacks,” writes Brent Hyder, Salesforce’s chief people officer. “In our always-on, always-connected world, it no longer makes sense to expect employees to work an eight-hour shift and do their jobs successfully,” Hyder adds. “Whether you have a global team to manage across time zones, a project-based role that is busier or slower depending on the season, or simply have to balance personal and professional obligations throughout the day, workers need flexibility to be successful.”
At first cat lawyer was embarrassed. Then he realized we all could use a laugh. (Washington Post) As far as courtroom disclosures go, this one was unique: “I’m not a cat,” a Texas attorney claimed as his Zoom square displayed a fluffy white feline. At a routine civil forfeiture case hearing in Texas’ 394th Judicial District Court, Presidio County attorney Rod Ponton accidentally signed on with the cat filter, making the flummoxed attorney look like an adorable kitten. The 34-second clip of Ponton’s brief appearance as a cat immediately amused many and is becoming a viral hit. The prevalence of video chat platforms for court appearances has led to other unusual moments: A defendant in Sacramento appeared from a barber’s chair, a Florida burglary suspect tried to flirt his way out of trouble with a judge, and a lawyer in Peru was caught on camera naked after he stripped to have sex. But Tuesday’s video was the cat’s pajamas to many. Even Ponton, once he recovered from cat face and mortification, found humor in his proverbial 15 minutes of fame. “At first I was worried about it,” Ponton, 69, told The Washington Post on Tuesday, “but then I realized as it was going viral if the country could take a moment to laugh at my cat moment at my expense, I’ll take it. We’ve had a stressful year.”

Jeffrey Epstein’s Palm Beach Mansion Is This Week’s Most Popular Home
realtor.com
One of the country’s most infamous homes went up for sale this week, and the clicks soon followed.
The Palm Beach, FL, mansion of the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein listed for $22 million, and the sheer curiosity it inspired made it the week’s most popular home on realtor.com®.
The disgraced financier died in jail a year ago, while facing an array of criminal charges. Two of his properties—one in Florida, the other in New York—just went on the market.
The Palm Beach home is the less expensive of the two, and the images available are limited to a handful of shots of the mansion’s exterior. This lack of listing photos, however, didn’t stop gawkers from taking a peek at the property.
Just a couple miles north of Mar-a-Lago, the waterfront mansion was designed by John Volk, an architect of the mid-20th century who helped to define Palm Beach’s signature style.
While Palm Beach remains popular with luxury buyers, it will be interesting to see whether anyone will be able to look past the home’s most recent owner.
Aside from Epstein’s mansion, you also clicked on the country’s most expensive home, the second-oldest home in Indiana, and a marvelous modern farmhouse in Oklahoma.
We also saw the return of the wild underground bunker lurking below Las Vegas—an ideal property for 2020.
