lorenzo berkshire x reader
short summary: enzo is kind to everyone but you.
slytherin gang was known for its violence and nonchalance, but there was one exceptional character. needles to say that every second girl and boy drooled over him and went on and on about how sweet he is. but you never felt that lorenzo berkshire could be kind or, god forbid, sweet.
he would curl his lip, roll his eyes, mock you in front of everyone - do virtually anything to piss you off. as he was flirting with a junior from hufflepuff, he saw you walking out of potions class from the corner of his eyes.
“nice sweater, y/l/n” he shouted from the behind. it wasn’t his voice, but what he said that shocked you. was he being nice? as you turned back to thank him, he continued “for someone who’s planning to retire. return this ugly piece of cloth to whatever cheap store you bought it from. go buy something decent for once, i can give you money if you ask nicely” girl near him chuckled as you tried to contain your tears.
“dickhead..” you mumbled underneath your breath
“what’d you say?” he was now towering over you. he didn’t like to be called names, but seeing you so broken over a small joke got him confuse. “hey, y/l/n, i didn’t mean to-“ he didn’t get to finish his sentence as you pushed him out of your way and stormed out of the hall.
normally his words wouldn’t mean anything. but it was a favorite sweater inherited from an uncle who was a hero in your eyes. he’d have bike rides with you, teach you the rules of quidditch and eat chocolate past your bedtime. he died because of some ignorant deatheater..as memories flooded back, you didn’t notice how someone approached you.
no one would come here during lunchtime. moreover, no one would know about its existence in the first place. as you lifted your eyes to look at whoever interrupted your peace, you were met with big brown eyes that were filled with guilt and confusion.
“hey..i know you don’t wanna talk but..” you shoved his hand away, wiping the tears away “listen. i apologize”
“for the first time in 7 years? thanks, i guess. now do me a favor and get lost” you weren’t used to his kindness. he just sighed and kneeled down in front of you. he pulled out tissues out of his bag and started wiping away your tears. the moment felt unreal, ethereal even, and all you could do was stare at him.

pt. 2 anyone? will you forgive him or not 🫵🏻

3. THE AMAZING JUNGWON
( sunflower, yang jungwon )
all day, jungwon had been spinning through your thoughts like a spider weaving its web. there was something about him that made it impossible to forget, and you were certain it wasn’t just guilt from his injury yesterday.
during lunch, your eyes met across the cafeteria, and he flashed you a small smile and a wave, only to be playfully nudged by his friend, who teased him. which could mean absolutely nothing, but could it actually?
what if it didn’t mean nothing. what if it was destiny that he had saved you from getting hit at practice. maybe it was the universe’s way of telling you something.
yet, he didn’t actually seem interested in you. giselle and winter were convinced he had feelings, arguing that no one jumps into harm's way for someone they hardly know. those thoughts swirled in your mind, and it was becoming overwhelming.
“damn it,” you muttered, frustrated, as you accidentally hit the 'delete' key instead of 'enter' on your history homework, losing an entire paragraph.
you stared at the meaningless virtual page, reading over the words to remember what you were writing. “and he led them to war to bring honor to his country, yang jungwon bravely- huh?" you stopped yourself, noticing his name in your work.
with a sigh, you clicked the ‘delete’ button on every instance of his name, replacing it with something else. "this can't be happening," you groaned, falling back into your chair.
deciding on getting some fresh air, you stood up, walking over to your window, sliding it open to reveal the cold night air. the dark sky seemed to be covered in freckles of stars, twinkling brightly.
suddenly, a face appeared right in front of you, dangling from the edge of the building.
"ah!" you screamed, stumbling back in shock, only to recognize the familiar grin. "oh my god! don't scare me like that, mr. spider-man!" you laughed, breathless.
he tilted his head to the right, still hanging upside down outside your window. "i didn’t think you were someone who gets scared easily," he remarked, gripping his web tightly while wincing slightly at his ankle, which was healing fast.
“i guess i am when a superhero pops out of nowhere outside my window,” you stood up, dusting your white top and sweatpants off.
he hummed, observing you crossing your arms. “are you going to hang upside down forever or are you going to come in?” you asked.
he nodded, already feeling a bit dizzy, and flipped himself into your room, landing gracefully on his feet. spider-man took a moment to survey your space, this was the first time yang jungwon had been inside a girl's room that wasn’t his aunt’s.
yours was just like how he pictured it, messy bed, lots of perfumes and makeup, pompom’s and cheer jacket handing behind your door, a fluffy mat and cute plushies.
“what? never been inside a girl’s room before?” you laughed at his demeanor, as he observed everything.
“what gave it away?” spider-man replied, stepping dangerously closer, his presence slightly towering over you.
“everything,” you grinned, poking his arm playfully. “you want something to eat? drink?” you offered the hero, who squinted his spider eyes at you. “won’t your parents be mad at you having spider-man over and offering him your food?” he asked.
“if i don’t do it, they’d probably offer you themselves if they weren’t out,” you shot back, noticing the confusion on his masked face. “it’s their anniversary. while some are out celebrating, others are stuck finishing history homework…” you gestured toward your computer, prompting him to lean in for a better look.
“huh, i didn’t know this guy, yang jungwon led people into battle,” spider-man read over your last paragraph, making you widen your eyes at his words. “wait! stop reading! no!” you exclaimed, sprinting to the computer to shut it off while he laughed, casually jumping onto your bed.
“you got a crush on this guy?” he asked, propping himself up on his arms.
you turned to him, feigning annoyance. “no, he’s just someone from school who saved me from getting hit by a football yesterday,” you explained. then, a lightbulb went off in your head. “wait! you work for stark! you should know him! he has an internship with tony!” you lit up, jumping to stand up closer to him, curious.
“what was his name again?” jungwon asked indifferently, hoping not to blow his cover.
“yang jungwon, he’s about this tall,” you stretched your arm abover your head, stopping some inches above your head. “he’s really smart, at least from what i’ve heard.”
“oh yeah, i know the kid,” spider-man recalled. “he’s super nice and handsome, he’s also very smart like you said, always has answers for everything, he’s also really strong and single, just so you know-“
“you seem to know him well,” you told spider-man, who kept rambling about jungwon like there was no tomorrow.
“well, stark thinks he’s great so... if you like him, i say you should go for it,” he shrugged, blushing underneath his mask, not knowing where he got all this confidence from.
“like him? absolutely no, i barely know the guy,” you snorted, motioning for him to follow you out the room. the hero complied, walking behind you to the kitchen of the gigantic l/n penthouse.
“anyway, what are you even doing here?” you asked him, opening the big fridge to take out some chocolate chip cookies and milk, then heading over to the cabinet near and taking out some cups and a plate.
“i came to see how you were doing, you seem well,” said spider-man sitting on a tall chair on the kitchen island.
“you’re really wasting your precious hero time to visit a random girl you saved?” you opened the pack of cookies, placing them in the plate, and started to pour some milk in each glass, sliding one over to him.
he looked at the glass as if it were a ticking bomb. “uh, thanks,” he said, glancing between you and the milk.
spider-man stared at it with fright, until you spoke again. “i can give you a straw if you want, but you will have to pull up your mask just a bit if you wanna eat,” you told him, seeing as if he was afraid to reveal at least a speck of his face.
“no, i’m okay, i’ll just-" he raised a bit of his mask up, revealing his slightly pale skin, and drank some milk, careful to only hold up the mask to his lips. he knew that if he were anyone else, he wouldn’t even do this, but jungwon knew you in person, and he trusted himself around you.
“you really are careful,” you sighed. “if i was spider-man, firstly, my suit would be white, and secondly, i’d tell half the world who i am and let them spread the news to the other half,” you laughed, popping a cookie into your mouth.
“i think you’d be a great spider-woman,” he said, taking a cookie too. something about jungwon is that he absolutely loves girlscout cookies. “apart from the fact that you couldn’t keep your identity a secret, and that your suit would easily get dirty, they would love you.”
“they?”
“the avengers, they would really like you, specially captain america, you talk like him-" he started.
“ugh, don’t even, i have probably seen him more than my own family, my school keeps playing these stupid psa videos,” you groaned.
“oh, those? yeah, they’re pretty annoying. i hate them,” spider-man agreed, rolling his eyes.
“you go to school near then,” you teased.
“what?! how’d you know?! i mean, i’m a grown man- i already graduated college and stuff!” he quickly corrected, a hint of panic in his voice, trying to make it sound deeper.
you laughed, enjoying the playful banter. “sure, whatever helps you sleep at night, mr. spider-man.”

Let's (re)Read The Dragon Reborn! Chapter 20: Visitations
Tumblr media
You know the drill. Don't keep reading unless you love more spoilers than there are books in this very long series.
This chapter starts with a crescent moon and stars. I believe it's new to this book (Selene's chapters last time having either Portal Stone or Cairhien symbols), and it means Lanfear is up to no good.
For an instant Mat continued to stare at her; then suddenly he realized he was standing there naked. Face scarlet, he shambled to the bed, pulled the blanket around himself like a cloak, and more fell than sat down on the edge of the mattress.
The show robbed us of naked Mat adventures and I for one am deeply offended. Also these boys are weird with how nudity-averse they are except for their ability to forget about it just as a woman is about to check them out. You'd think he'd have freaked out a little sooner, even here.
For a moment he wished that Rand, whatever he had become, or even Perrin were there to advise him.
Mat is probably the least believable of the three to be having this concern considering how many one-night stands he's going to pull off.
“I would not have visited you in this way, Mat, except that I was here in the . . . in the White Tower—” She smiled as if the name amused her—“for another purpose, and I wanted to see all of you.”
Ugh and didn't I just eliminate Lanfear from contention in the whole Grey Man thing? Guess that was premature. Makes some sense she'd try to be cleaning up that mess, but then why not fuck up Egwene and crew at any point in the many months they were virtually defenseless? Did Mat's luck protect them somehow? Also it's a little funny Lanfear finds the name White Tower at all amusing, she's really condescending if she begrudges the new Aes Sedai a new name for their new HQ. But then she also mocks their healing so no surprise there.
“You may have seen me,” she said finally. “Somewhere. Call me Selene.”
Girl what. When did he see you? You pulled Rand to another dimension (or followed him there, whatever), and ditched him once he reached Cairhien. Then you briefly caused drama in Falme but not where Mat was. You invading his dreams maybe?
“Let us just say that I am someone whose interests coincide with yours. These . . . Aes Sedai mean to use you, but you will like it, in the main, I think. And accept it. There is no need to convince you to seek out glory.”
Lanfear once again drastically misunderstands the psychology of everyone around her, news at eleven. Mat doesn't seek out glory so much as get cornered into it when circumstances are such that the only way to do the right thing is to be a hero.
“One of those pathetic followers of Ba’alzamon who think he will give them immortality and power? I follow no one. There is one man I could stand beside, but I do not follow.”
She's so prideful she doesn't even care outright telling a stranger that she's loyal to no one but herself, even though her schemes absolutely could get her in trouble with the shadow.
“By listening to what they tell you, and what they do not. Will they tell you your father came to Tar Valon?”
This is the weirdest little detail because I don't think the visit ever really gets mentioned beyond this chapter and it feels like "Two dudes from the Two Rivers went to Tar Valon and back in between the devastating Trolloc attacks" should come up sometimes.
“Just remember that there is another choice. You need not be a puppet for the White Tower or prey for Ba’alzamon’s Darkfriends. The world is more complex than you can imagine. Do as these Aes Sedai wish for the present, but remember your choices. Will you do that?”
Lanfear accomplishes so little for the Shadow or herself with this speech that I'm still not sure why she bothered. Was Mat just practice for a boy she cared about? Did Jordan intend for Mat and Lanfear to cross paths again (in a meaningful, not tangential to her stalking Rand in disguise way that is) and then just never had room for it? Mat is legit the most reliable of the three ta'veren by a great margin and he never really pursues his own choices, just keeps getting roped into one good deed after another.
And she had not asked him to conceal her visit from the Aes Sedai.
Naturally this is the only thing Mat does end up doing, so I suppose as far as sewing discord goes Lanfear did an okay job but it's not like Mat would have sworn an oath to Siuan if she hadn't dropped in.
He brushed aside a redhawk’s feather, a smooth, striped rock he had liked the colors of, his razor, and his bone-handled pocketknife, and freed his wash-leather purse from some coils of spare bowstring.
When it comes to collecting odd, shiny things, Mat's already pretty much a raven, so he'll fit right into Seanchan if you ignore all the other cultural differences and also the fact that they're not a very raven-like people at all.
They rattled as he pulled them out, but he still popped off the tight-fitting round caps. Everything was as it should be. Five dice carved with symbols, for crowns, and five marked with spots. The spotted dice would do for a number of games, but more men seemed to play crowns than anything else.
The dice get more attention than any other item of clothing in his inventory, probably in part because all of his cool gear (hat, spear, eyepatch) is still to come.
The Amyrlin’s eyebrows rose at the sight of him standing there with the blanket hanging from his shoulders and his purse and dice cups in his hands. “I don’t think you will need those for a while yet, my son,” she said dryly. “Put them up and get back to bed before you fall on your face.”
If Leane hadn't been there and Mat hadn't been obviously about to fall over, who thinks Siuan would totally have played a friendly game or two with Mat?
“Men always seem to refuse to admit they are sick until they’re sick enough to make twice as much work for women. Then they claim they’re well too soon, with the same result.”
*looks pointedly at the women in this series* Yes Siuan, this is absolutely a male trait and not anything else.
They were both looking at him, now. He cleared his throat. “Uh . . . Mother.”
It's funny that Mat cares more about propriety than Siuan or Leane do, even though he's bad at it. It meshes nicely with how he'll eventually be the first one to treat Egwene with the respect her station demands.
“Your name and description are on their way to the bridge guards,” the Amyrlin said, “and the dockmasters. I’ll not try to hold you inside the Tower, but you will not leave Tar Valon until you are well. Should you try to hide in the city, hunger will drive you back here eventually, or if it doesn’t, we will find you before you starve.”
I think Siuan is going for a "cards on the table" approach, not recognizing that Mat's so suspicious of Aes Sedai (and good at cards) that his first instinct is to assume she's hidden something up her sleeve as well.
It might be true. Aes Sedai never lied, but there were too many mights and mays in it for him.
And this is the other problem: Siuan doesn't know the full hand she's playing with, so complete honesty isn't as much of a boon here as it might be if she were in control of the situation.
The Keeper took it up immediately. “We did not know where you were then, Mat. I told him so, and he left before the heavy snows. I gave him some gold to make the journey home easier.”
Note that they had an inkling of where Mat be at that particular point, so Leane's "truthful" statement is still effectively a lie of omission: they were on the Hunt for the Horn, even if the Tower wasn't sure where the hunt was.
“As far as I know,” the Amyrlin said smoothly, “the boy is well enough, but who can say? I have seen him only once, the time I saw you, in Fal Dara.”
Note how Siuan's lie here is to hide the truth from Leane. There's a delay in info from Moiraine, so while Siuan at this moment has no reason to think Rand is hurt, she can't promise it. She also knows that he's the DR with an unhealable wound so saying "he's doing great" would be total BS. But she adds the detail about only seeing Rand once to make him seem unimportant to her, a statement she probably wouldn't worry about if Leane weren't right there. Hence why she sends her away immediately.
She was on her feet and looming over him so fast he hardly saw her move. “You play games with me, boy, and I will make you weep for your mother to come running. I have no time for games, and neither do you. Now, do—you—remember?”
And now of course Siuan has only cemented her position as untrustworthy in Mat's eyes. Good job girl!
She put an elbow on the arm of the chair and propped her chin on her hand. Her eyes never left him. “Would you prefer the alternative?”
Though honestly this is probably the best course to take with Mat. "You're damn right we could have let you die but didn't. Why is that a bad thing again?"
“You remind me of my uncle Huan. No one could ever pin him down. He liked to gamble, too, and he’d much rather have fun than work. He died pulling children out of a burning house. He wouldn’t stop going back as long as there was one left inside. Are you like him, Mat? Will you be there when the flames are high?”
And also she gets points for effortlessly summarizing his character for the next dozen books after just two meetings with Mat, so really she's coming out ahead in this conversation because actually making him a willing ally would be impossible without compulsion.
“I do not want to tell anyone. I wish nobody knew. Why do you want to keep it such a secret? Don’t you trust your Aes Sedai?”
Would you prefer that she did trust her Aes Sedai, Mat?
“Are you telling me Darkfriends could come after me here? I thought the White Tower could keep Darkfriends out.” He remembered what Selene had said about the Black Ajah, and wondered what the Amyrlin would say to that.
A great way to find out would be to tell her. No? That's cool. Absolutely nothing bad could come of Siuan not being aware of who's in the Tower.
Selene had been right about some things; but the Amyrlin had told him she meant to use him, and how. In a way. There were too many holes in what she had said to suit him, too many holes she could slip something deadly through. The Amyrlin wanted something, and Selene wanted something, and he was the rope they were tugging between them. He thought he would rather face Trollocs than be caught between those two.
Really it's a shame that Mat's prejudice against the Aes Sedai can't make him see that Siuan is a much better one in comparison to fucking Lanfear. He never really gets over it at all, which is realistic but still a bit disappointing. Perhaps in Seanchan he'll come around when his options are "sul'dam" or "damane".
Next time: A third new chapter icon in a row?!

pro hero red riot, eijirou kirishima is a girl dad.
cw: smut, mdni 18+, kirishima with baby girls and some fluff, breeding!kink, daddy!kink, pregnancy!kink. soft dom!kriishima + fem!reader.
Tumblr media
he has a litter of beautiful little girls, who’s eyes and smiles are virtually carbon copies of his own. there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his four little angels; he’d known that from before they’d even popped out of the womb.
the man is built, in his pro hero days, a literal rock that towers over his from friends back in his U.A days but the man crumbles as soon as his first baby girl is placed into his arms— toying with her tiny fingers and toes to make her squeal, bringing a smile to her chubby face. he does this to every newborn you have. he blows raspberries on their bellies and tickles them until their little faces are red and you have to tell him to let up ‘cause he’s addicted to their infectious laughter.
eijirou kirishima is that girl dad who learns early on how to style his daughters’ hair— spends hours on youtube looking for the perfect technique, practising different styles before your first baby shows the first signs of longer hair. by the time your fourth has arrived, kirishima is an expert in the art of braiding and accessorising— so much so that he takes over from you during the morning rush for school.
kirishima, the girl dad, who comforts his babies with fancy tea parties, tutus and teddy bear guests alike when someone tells one of them they can’t do something because it’s a ‘boys thing’. promptly calling up uncle katsuki to train the living heck out of his girls, as they end up on the soccer or rugby teams— annihilating the very boys who dared to say they can’t do anything they set their minds to.
pro hero red riot, happily married waves his little girls off to school— ignoring the longing stares of other wives and fathers alike, who flirt with him by mentioning how good he is with his kids. why wouldn’t he be? he’s the best daddy in the world— at least that’s what his girls tell him whenever eijirou comes home from work with a new scar and a story to match, his little pack of over excited girls gathering around him and sitting in his big arms while their mommy makes dinner. chanting “we love you daddy!”
but the thing is about kirishima, is that he doesn’t know when to turn the dad mode off. even when you both stumble into bed after a long day of taking care of your girls, eijirou’s hands will slide beneath your bodies and push off any lose fabric you wear— so when you protest, his red eyes are become dotted with hints of lust while he maps out your skin and blemishes.
“don’t you want daddy to touch you, sweet girl? you’ll be good for daddy and take it right?”
his hands are on your thighs before you know it, pulling them apart to expose what lies beneath your night clothes— kirishima’s in a pussy daze and all he can think about is giving you another girl, especially when pushing his heavy cock, balls perfect for breeding into your ill prepared hole, barely thinking to flick at your clit and make you wet enough for him. you’ll take what he gives, that’s the least you could do for such a great father like him.
“oh but eiji,” you’d whine, sounding so pretty sll for him but kirishima can barely focus on the words that you voice, cock sliding into your welcoming walls— wrapped around him like heaven, feeling like a forbidden fruit. and when he’s inside you, all red riot can think about is pounding another baby into you— making you swollen and round with his fifth little girl, seeing your tits grow and your thighs thicken. it excites him, makes him twitch within the safety of your puffy folds.
“baby— baby— call me daddy, call me daddy please..while we make a baby,” eijirou would damn near cry, clamping a hand over your mouth while you suck him in. on the verge of tears ‘cause the thought of you letting him cum inside you and knock you up again feels like him stepping into eve’s garden. you can afford to have another, money isn’t the problem, so what’s another kid to his already perfect litter of baby girls? what’s another nine months of you waddling around; big and proud and stuff with something he made?
oh eijirou wants to be a daddy again so badly, drawing back his hips ‘n pushing himself balls deep into your fluttering cunt, now slick from just the feeling of having him seated in your ribbed walls and prodding at your cervix. “but eiji, daddy—” you’re whining out for your husband, quiet underneath the creaks of the bed while he manhandles you on your hands and knees, keeping you on his dick while your body remains limp and pliable to his touch. “the kids...school tomorrow—“
“daddy knows baby, fuck—“ kirishima chokes back a moan, your slippery cunt massaging his thick dick and soaking him in your juices as he moves until he’s fucked into you completely, reaching the hilt with shallow thrusts— keeping himself quiet by biting his lip between sharp teeth. he can’t let himself be too loud, waking up the other kids will cut his time to breed you short. “he knows—let me just— put a baby in you, kay? worry ‘bout the girls in the mornin’ ,”
you nod weakly, gripping the seams of your pillows and throwing your ass back onto eijirou’s cock to take in more of him. he pulls back, only so slightly, cock covered in a clear film from the mixes of your arousals— kirishima almost bustin’ right there on the spot. he could cum, he would cum if it wasn’t for him so hung up on the idea of breeding your cunt until you leak fat drops of white semen and give him his firth little girl.
“daddy, move...please,” you keen into his touch, writhing in slick stain sheets which you grind your clit against and humping back on the pro hero.
kirishima could die right here, right now and he wouldn’t care. the only thing holding him back from seeing god is your cunt, your daughters and the baby he’s about to cream into your womb. he wouldn’t feel guilty about not giving you a boy either.
“don’t worry,” kirishima coos, grabbing hold of your cheeks and shaking them over his cock. “relax ‘n let daddy take care of you, yeah? breed you ‘n fill you up with cum till your legs are shakin’ and we see you all fat ‘n swollen in a couple months, yeah?”
you don’t have the energy to respond, tongue lolling out of your mouth and spit down your chin as kirishima starts to properly thrust, prodding at your cervix with every roll of his hips. the sight being a reward for the world’s greatest girl dad.

Fly Away
Episode 2: The Collector
Ao3 - First
(Féline Sombre & Paon Lilas designs)
Summery: An AU where Adrien never went to in-person school, not getting the cat miraculous, and found the peacock miraculous. -Gabriel Agreste sets out his plan to protect his identity as Hawkmoth. (and try to get some miraculous)
(this is like... twice as long as the first one...whoops)
Adrien felt like a ragdoll. Chloé squeezed him around his shoulders and shook him; squealing the entire time. He just went limp. Resigned to being dragged around from the doorway.
“Hi Chloé. Hi... Sabrina? Er…" Adrien stared at the comically tall stack of luggage, only identifiable as Sabrina by their favored shorts over tights style on the legs behind the luggage. "Is this… a sleepover?” His father barely let them over anymore, how did Chloé convince his father to let them stay overnight?
“Hi,” Sabrina said, muffled from under the piles of luggage.
“It is Adrikins! Your father finally stopped being a stick in the mud for once! I have sooo much for us to do. It simply can not be all done in a measly hour. Sabrina, the guest room is over there, we’ll be sleeping there.” Chloé pointed, and Sabrina grunted in effort before they made their way towards the room.
“Do you need help, Sabrina?” Adrien asked, watching her fumble with the tower of luggage.
“Oh she’s fine, aren’t you Sabrina?”
“Uhhh, yep! Just fine!” They kicked open the door before Adrien could escape Chloé’s hug to help. She stumbled, and the luggage fell into the room. Sabrina rebalanced themself with the skill of a gymnast, avoiding the fate of the luggage. They looked at the mess and sighed, shoulders sagging.
“See? Now!” Chloé grabbed Adrien’s arm and pulled him towards his own room, “I need to tell you everything about this new hero I met!”
“Oh. Okay?” Chloé had been most of his first-hand information on the superheroes of Paris. Obviously he’d seen the newscasts, and, despite Chloé’s insistence that the “Ladyblog” was unreliable, he followed that too. But Chloé was who he got the details from. He’s been reconsidering some of the stories from Chloé’s hand in causing the last akuma.
While listening to Chloé embellish her own role in a story he was in, Sabrina eventually returned. She smiled and sat, listening to the last of Chloé’s tale. “After the fight I did get a good look at Paon Lilas. He was kinda cute. Not as cute as you, though, my Adrikins!”
Adrien chuckled and shook his head. “I’m sure he’d look just as cute with a team of people doing his makeup, hair, and wardrobe for him.”
“Shh, you’re not giving yourself enough credit.” She rolled her eyes, waving a hand dismissively.
"Well, I don't know about him..." Sabrina said cautiously, "When I came in at the end there... Ladybug seemed pretty suspicious of him. Maybe there's something we don't know?"
"He did seem sorta new, but he gave me a real Mr Cuddles! No strings attached like with Hawkmoth. Really, he can't be that bad."
Adrien nodded, "I'm sure he did what he thought was right…"
Sabrina hummed, "Probably..."
Chloé shook her head and waved a hand "Anyway, Sabrina show Adrien our surprise!"
"Oh! I'll go get it!" They stood up and raced off to collect whatever it was.
-
Sabrina stared up at the stack of suitcases and sighed "This… may take longer than intended."
Plagg zipped out of her purse and propped himself on top of one. "Ugh why go through the effort? Just tell her you broke it when you tripped."
"Chloé is my best friend Plagg, and Adrien is a good friend too. He's been pretty upset since he couldn't go to school. Least I can do is find the gift."
"Blegh, what kid wants to go to school. If I lived in this fancy place I'd be eating camembert all day long!"
Sabrina chuckled and shook her head "You do that anyway. Come on you lazy kitty, at least help me look." They hefted the first suitcase and started carefully looking through it.
Plagg groaned. Then dramatically huffed. Then sighed twice as dramatically and zipped away to find something more interesting. Like cheese, perhaps.
Sabrina looked up and frowned at the lack of kwami. "Plagg!" She whisper-yelled. Abandoning their task, they ran after their kwami.
"Oooo, what's this?" Plagg disappeared into a room, and Sabrina followed. He glanced around the room then shrugged, "Boring, next?"
"What's that?" She gestured at the ajar painting. A… door? She stepped over to find a safe.
Plagg hummed. "Okay, interest spiked. Let's see what they're hiding in there."
"Oh I don't think we should. We should get back to finding Adrien's gift-"
Plagg already disappeared into the safe. The door opened and Plagg riffled through the contents, muttering about what was there. Sabrina tilted their head, and Plagg handed her a book. "Pretty mundane if you ask me. I was hoping for a secret food stash, maybe the World's Finest Camembert."
Sabrina shook her head and flipped through a few of the pages. "Miraculous? Why do the Agrestes have this in a safe?" They glanced at the portrait. "Behind a painting…"
"Sabrinaaaaaaa what's taking so long? And fetch my nail kit! My nail chipped!" Chloé called.
"I'll go down and help her-" Adrien responded. Sabrina gasped and closed the safe, and ran back to the guest room…. And they still had the book! Ohnoohno. She scrambled for a place to put it before shoving it under a pile of clothes in Chloé’s suitcase.
Adrien walked in with Chloé trailing behind. "Adrikins it's a surprise, don't you know the meaning of surprise?"
He chuckled "I do but Sabrina, don't you want some help?"
They stared a bit at him, "It might be nice? There's… a lot of suitcases here…"
Adrien gave Chloé a 'See?' look, and picked up a suitcase to look through. "What am I looking for?"
"It's a surpriseeeee," Chloé huffed.
Adrien smirked, and picked up a shirt, showing it to Chloé "This it?" He picked up a lipstick "This it? Oh what about this?" He picked up a set of earrings, placing them against his ears. Sabrina giggled as he continued, shaking her head.
Chloé groaned and sat on the edge of the bed, looking at her nails with a pout. Sabrina quietly handed her a nail kit from their own purse, earning a smile.
Adrien found it. He pulled out the DVD and tilted his head "What's this?"
"I uh, convinced the class to do a virtual hello- since you couldn't- uh, I also have something else if you don't like it."
His eyes got shiny, and he rubbed his cheeks, smiling, "Thank you. Really." He pulled Chloé and Sabrina into a hug.
Chloé looked a little startled. She likely was used to having to start the hugs, but softened into the hug.
He pulled back with an awkward giggle, "Sorry, uh, I'll watch this later. Really, thank you."
"Yeah, no trouble at all. Apparently one of the kids is like, all about film making. He kinda took over, actually."
Adrien giggled and nodded, "Well, I'm sure you have other plans too-"
Chloé fluffed her hair, "But of course! I have the whole day planned!"
Adrien gave Sabrina a look, clearly looking for comradery in the exhaustion of Chloé’s day-long itinerary. She smiled and shook her head, ready to help Chloé make her plans reality.
-
Chloé had the book. Sabrina stared at it. Why did Chloé have the book? Chloé did not waste a minute to dramatically show off the book.
"Can you believe there's tons of other superheroes that aren't active?" Chloé called, almost immediately summoning the class to surround her and the book.
Sabrina was going to die of mortification. How were they going to get that back to the Agreste house? Chloé wasn't going to just let her put it back now that it was her newest attention magnet.
Marinette wasn't late for once. Although, she did feel late. She hopped up and down trying to get a look at what was at the center of the small crowd.
"Is there a horse superhero?"
"I wonder if Ladybug and Féline Sombre have powers we don't know about."
"Do you know what language that is?"
Tiki gasped. Marinette’s eyes widened as Tiki weaved in and out of the group of teens’ legs.
Marinette stared anxiously. Tiki returned quickly. “We need to get that book, Marinette!”
“What?” Marinette cried, but thankfully the only weird look she got was from Ms. Bustier.
Ms. Bustier clapped and the group dispersed disjointedly. “Alright class, that’s enough. We do have more to learn about than superheroes.”
Marinette anxiously watched Chloé’s new book the entire class period. The book was mocking her, sitting on the desk like it was innocent.
Marinette eventually got her chance at the end of the school day. Chloé was once again showing off, as Sabrina tugged on her arm, apparently trying to get her to come with her.
Lila was on her other side, with her head tilted in curiosity. "Where did you get this?" Lila asked.
"It's one of a kind and totally a secret~" She fluffed her hair.
"Come onnn Chloé." Sabrina tugged on her arm again. Hard. Chloé stumbled backwards, and Sabrina caught her, face flushed with embarrassment. "Ohmygosh I'm so sorry!" The book was on the floor.
Chloé gaped. She pulled herself from Sabrina and walked away without a word. Sabrina immediately followed after, abundant with apologies.
Marinette dove for the book. And hit her head against Lila's.
She grinned uneasily at her. "Hi Lila." She tugged on the book, with resistance from Lila.
"Hello Marinette, I've got it don't worry." She tugged back, and Marinette's grip hardened on it.
"I can go to return this to Chloé, they look like they're going my direction anyway. No need for you to go out of your way!" She smiled broadly.
"Oh no, it's fine, I wanted to ask her more about it anyway."
Marinette's smile strained, "Funny, so was I."
Lila yellped. She jumped up and twirled, as if she was stung. Marinette only just barely noticed a red blur return to her purse. She raised a brow. Tiki sure was going to great lengths to make sure Marinette had this book.
Marinette pressed the book against her chest and ran in Chloé’s direction. "I'll tell Chloé you said hi!"
Lila huffed and crossed her arms with a frown, watching the girl run off.
-
"Chloé could be Hawkmoth!?" Marinette cried, dragging her hands over her face as Master Fu gave her a confused look. "Bah-wha? I need a plan of attack! Paon Lilas did immediately try to protect her so they must be in cahoots. That must be why she torments so many people! She's not waiting for people to have bad days, she's causing them! How do I confront my own classmate? Do I-"
"Marinette! Chloé isn't Hawkmoth." Tiki said, hands on her hips.
"No?"
"Chloé is a teenage girl, Hawkmoth seems to be an adult man."
Marinette blinked repeatedly. She giggled awkwardly, "Right, right I knew that."
Master Fu shook his head, "But.. Find out where Chloé got the book, and we may find Hawkmoth. I will start translating the book. I am glad you found it, it should be useful."
Marinette gave a firm nod and set out to find Chloé.
-
Adrien stared at the video of Sabrina taking the book and was suddenly very grateful he had thought about cameras when he finally took that brooch…
"Did you know about this?" His father demanded coldly.
He shook his head "No, no. I- didn't know you had that back there!"
"Your friends will not be allowed back here again. Ever."
"What?" Adrien felt like he was sinking, falling, "But father I-"
"They stole the source of my inspiration and betrayed my and your trust. That is not the sort of people I want you associating with. That is all."
Adrien slumped into his chair as Natalie and his father left the room. He stared out the window as a numbness settled into his chest. He didn't know how long he sat there until he noticed Duusu was curled against his chest. A bird flew past outside.
"... Paon Lilas can fly free."
"Huh?" Duusu tilted his head. "Adrien you know what will happen if you transform too often-"
"I just need to get out of this house. Duusu, spread my feathers." Transformed, he leapt out the window and ran.
-
"Not quite what I expected but the result is the same. Kids, so nosy, taking what does not belong to them. It is time I got my 'book of inspiration' back, and perhaps a few miraculous while I'm at it." Gabriel Agreste picked up the empty book. "Come my Akuma, and evilize me."
The Collector grinned. "Surely they won't mind becoming part of my permanent collection."
Natalie and Adrien’s bodyguard were all too willing for their likeness to be captured, but the bump in the road came with his son. Adrien seemed to have run away. He growled under his breath. But, as long as he was out of the way of the fight, it didn’t matter. He huffed and made his way out to cause as much of a show as possible. Eventually the superheroes would show their faces.
-
“Chloé, I didn’t mean to! But really we should return the book as soon as possible! I don’t want Adrien to get in trouble.” Sabrina pleaded.
“Ugh, but I finally had something that Lila didn’t!”
Sabrina tilted her head “I- Why would that matter?” Chloé just pouted. They sighed, “Can we please return the book now? Uh… Where is it?”
Chloé looked up. “Oh nooo, you made me drop it!”
“Sabrina Raincomprix and Chloé Bourgeois,” an ominous voice called. Sabrina spun on her heel. It only took them a glance at the akuma to fall into a fighting stance in front of Chloé. “I am the Collector. You stole my book of inspiration, and for that you shall help me build a new one!” The Collector threw his book like a boomerang towards the teens.
Sabrina pushed Chloé onto the ground before it could touch them. Sabrina got up, and taking the opportunity of distraction, ran.
“Sabrina! You- ” Chloé looked around, finding her friend had already left. “….Sabrina?”
“Looks like your friend left you,” The Collector grinned, “She seems to be all around unreliable, hm?”
Chloé took a page out of Sabrina’s book and ran.
“I knewwww I should’ve just put that book back! Now Adrien’s father is akumatized,” Sabrina turned a corner as Plagg zipped out of her purse.
He shrugged, “Eh, not your fault the door was open.”
They shook their head. “Plagg, claws out!”
They vaulted up and returned to the spot they’d left Chloé and the Collector, only to find both of them gone. “Sorry Chloé…” She gritted her teeth and began to search for the Collector.
They found Paon Lilas before they found the Collector. He was sitting on the roof of a building, legs dangling over the edge, eyes distant. Féline Sombre vaulted onto the roof and walked up next to him. “What are you doing up here, tweety bird?”
He chuckled and looked up at them. “Just enjoying the fresh air. Did you and Ladybug reserve this spot?”
“No, but we do have an Akuma to deal with.”
Paon stood up, “Where?”
“No idea, he disappeared before I could catch him. I already know it’s Gabriel Agreste.”
Paon stumbled. “Are you sure?”
“Yes, he’s aiming to add to his ‘collection’ whatever that means.” She gives the boy a glance over, frowning, “Can I trust you to help find and keep him busy until Ladybug shows?”
He nodded firmly. “I’ll follow your lead, kitty-cat.”
Féline Sombre blinked a little then nodded, “Okay, you go to the left, see if you can find him. We’ll meet up at the Eiffel if we can’t find him. Otherwise, call me.”
“I can call you?”
They blinked “Er- There’s a phone in both mine and Ladybug’s weapons so I’m sure there’s one in your fan?... Good luck. I’ll avoid crossing your path.” She smiled a little then they vaulted off.
He watched her go, the numbness sinking deeper into his bones. He took a deep breath in and headed to the left, watching for someone who would look like an akumatized version of his own father… He let the tides of emotions lead his way more so than his vision, looking for some sense of an exaggerated version of familiar cold anger or disappointment.
He found his father, and the expected feelings were there, but it didn’t seem to fit in with the severity he’d noticed from the last akuma. He didn’t know what that meant. He glanced at the fan, fumbling for whatever would activate a phone. He blinked as the fan created a pop out screen. He found a contact for Féline Sombre, but no Ladybug. He raised a brow, and shrugged, tapping the contact icon. She picked up quickly. “Féline Sombre, I found him. He’s just outside the Louvre.”
“Okay, try to keep him busy and away from the civilians. I’ll call Ladybug.” They hung up, and Paon Lilas dropped off the roof down towards his father.
“Looks like someone got trapped in a race car paint booth,” Paon taunted. His father turned around and smiled at him. He did not like that smile. Was it bad that he was unnerved by his father smiling?
“Hello to you too, little peacock. You’ll do lovely in my new collection,” He lifted his book and aimed, “But before I do, allow me to seize your Miraculous for Hawkmoth.” He threw the book at Paon Lilas.
He ducked and the book hit the guardrail causing it to disappear. He blinked and his father showcased the guardrail's place in his book before swiping it away, erasing it from the page.
"Just stand still, pretty feathers like those need to be immortalized!"
"I'm allergic to paper, actually." Paon Lilas joked. He circled the Collector, getting a sense of his surroundings and how to keep him there. He really didn’t want to hit his father, even if it was an akumatized version of him...
"How unfortunate." The Collector said coolly. He threw the book at him again and Paon leaped out of the way.
"Really, I'm not much of a by-the-books person!"
The Collector growled and caught his book, glaring at Paon Lilas. “I’m starting to see that. You’re all just troublemaking children.”
Féline Sombre did not seem to have the same reservations as Paon Lilas about hitting his father. She vaulted in and kicked him from behind. “Whoops, cat’s out of the bag.”
-
Marinette was definitely glad for the Ladyblog. Having notifications on for Alya’s obsessive tracking of Akumas and the superheroes movements has certainly allowed her to find the Akumas that didn’t show up right in front of her. She turned down an alley, and double checked for onlookers before transforming. She found Féline Sombre’s message, and listened to their briefing while she set out to the Louvre.
Féline was already there keeping the Collector at bay. ...And working with: “Paon Lilas?!”
“Oh! Hello m’lady!” Paon grinned. The book flew at his head and his eyes widened as he leaped into the air to avoid it. “Don’t let the book touch you, it will trap you in its pages!”
“M’lady? I love that!” Féline Sombre giggled, “Can I use that too?”
“But of course, Mittens. I’ve got plenty more where that came from!”
Ladybug landed next to Féline, giving Paon a glare “Oh hush Feathers.”
Paon Lilas gave her an uneasy grin which was quickly erased as the Collector threw a kick at him while throwing his book towards Ladybug. Féline Sombre moved in front of her, blocking with her staff. The staff disappeared from their hands.
“I think we need some luck right now Ladybug!” Féline said, shifting into a hand-combat pose.
Ladybug nodded, calling “Lucky Charm!” The magic provided a miniature trampoline. She looked around with a frown.
The Collector meanwhile, threw his book at the entrance pyramid. He kicked Féline Sombre into the resulting hole in the ground, jumping down after them.
Ladybug and Paon Lilas immediately leapt after. Ladybug caught Féline, swinging in from her yoyo. Paon tumbled onto the ground, and looked over to the Collector. The Collector grinned, throwing his book towards where Ladybug had hooked her yoyo.
“Ladybug!” Paon called. It only earned him a frown and a sharp spike of suspicion rather than her following his gesture toward the book. She and Féline tumbled onto the ground as the yoyo was sucked into the pages of the book.
The Collector caught his book in the other hand, tapping the page with the yoyo, “My collection really isn’t complete with some superheroes in it, but, I promised Hawkmoth your Miraculous first.”
“I’m pretty sure that’s not much of an option!” Paon Lilas went for a punch, only to get blocked with one hand. He ducked the swipe with the open book.
Ladybug looked around, glancing at Paon Lilas’ fan and the book. “Of course! Bird Brain, I need a friend who likes to play ball!” Ladybug raised her trampoline.
Paon jumped back away from the Collector and plucked a feather from the fan. He tried to focus on Ladybug’s determination and imbued the feather with power, sending it Ladybug’s way, “Fly away, little amok.” The feather fluttered into the trampoline. “Got a plan? I assume?”
Ladybug tilted her head at the presence of Paon’s voice sounding much closer than it should be. The mask of light had surrounded his face, and assumedly hers. She nodded. “We’re going to try to see if we can fill up his collection.”
Paon nodded and a bouncy ball dropped onto the ground, and multiplied on the impact. “Meet Doubounce!” Paon winked and caught one in his hand, “Hey, wanna play ball?” He threw it towards the Collector who caught it with his book, frowning. Ah, yes, that looked like the usual response to that question.
Ladybug rolled her eyes and used the trampoline to rebound the multiplying bouncy ball sentimonster towards the Collector “We need Dou and the Collector a little more contained- Féline?”
“On it! Cataclysm!” They touched the stairwell, causing it to crumble, blocking everyone against the ruin and a wall.
Paon started using his fan like a tennis racket, while Ladybug redirected the senti-bouncy balls towards the Collector. He walked towards her, catching the ones that got too close to him. The Collector pressed the book against Ladybug’s lucky charm trampoline, but it didn’t disappear.
“What? Full already?” He flipped through the pages and made a move to erase a page, but Féline kicked it out of his hands. They grabbed the book and tore it in half.
“Miraculous Ladybug!” The swarm of ladybugs returned Ladybug’s yoyo, allowing her to catch and purify the butterfly. Féline Sombre meanwhile, hugged their baton against their cheek.
Paon Lilas snapped Doubounce out of existence and raced to his father’s side. “Fa- Sir? Are you okay?”
He looked up with confusion, but he didn’t… feel confused. Which only made Paon confused. Gabriel looked at the hero, frowning. “What happened? Where am I?”
“Er, the Louvre. You were akumatized by Hawkmoth.” Paon offered his father a hand up, which he accepted. “Don’t worry, it’s over now.”
“You’re… The new one, on the news.”
“Oh uh, Paon Lilas.” He smiled uneasily, and glanced at Ladybug. Who was suspicious again. What was so suspicious about talking to people?
His father nodded, and then gasped, “Adrien! I must find him.”
“I’m sure he is safe. If he was caught by your book, the miracle cure should’ve returned him to wherever he was last,” Ladybug explained.
“Nothing must happen to him. He’s too precious to me.” Gabriel said, placing his hands on Paon’s shoulders (daringly close to the miraculous clipped to his chest). Paon smiled softly, hearing his miraculous beep, as well as Ladybug’s and Féline Sombre’s.
“I’m sure he’s fine sir!” Féline said, “But we’re about to transform back… Goodbye!” Féline waved and vaulted up to the entryway of the Louvre.
“Paon Lilas. We need to talk.” Ladybug said.
“Oh…” He stepped away from his father and placed a hand over his miraculous protectively. “Er… Get back to you on that, M’lady…. Goodbye!” He ran.
Ladybug gave a glance towards Gabriel and smiled, “Sorry sir, goodbye!” She zipped up and away.
Gabriel huffed and called up Natalie. “I’m going to need a ride… I have found a few interesting bits of information about this ramshackle team.”
-
Paon Lilas stumbled into his room. "Fall my feathers."
Duusu appeared with a whoop and giggled. "That was awesome!"
Adrien closed his eyes, standing still as he tried to let the dizziness fade. "Yeah…" He braced a hand against his temple and huffed, "But… Do you know how we can fix the miraculous?"
"Oh no, you're hurt?" Duusu cried.
"I'm fine…" He sighed and sat on his bed, "But it's probably a good idea to fix it if I'm gonna keep using it…"
"It should be in the spell book!" Duusu said, collecting some seeds from a drawer.
"There's a spell book? Where?"
Duusu tilted his head, munching on his snack, considering. "I remember it somewhere!"
Adrien sighed and dropped himself against the bed. "Alright. Guess we gotta find a spell book." He yawned and closed his eyes, quickly succumbing to sleep.

Hey, it’s the Hero Lab!
[1 July, Age 726.    Planet Plant.]
The latest reports from the frontlines were very encouraging.    The Tuffles were a stubborn enemy, but the Saiyans had managed to drive them out of the north quarter of Orange City, while the Truffle pushback in Cidertown had slowed to a virtual standstill.   Nappa smiled as he laid the report down and enjoyed the view from his new penthouse.    The blood of the previous owner still stained the walls and floors, but he rather enjoyed the scent of dead Tuffles.   It gave the place some much-needed personality.
"You seem to be in a good mood today."
Nappa looked up from the balcony and spotted a young Saiyan floating overhead.    He didn't recognize the man, but judged him to be part-alien from the color of his hair and the strange clothes that he wore.    He looked more like a Tuffle than a Saiyan, but the scent was proof enough that he wasn't Nappa's enemy.    Whatever the young man's parentage, his blood was nothing like the kind that decorated his new home.
"Why wouldn't I be happy?" Nappa asked.   His thin mustache framed his smile as he crossed his arms over his massive chest.    "The Tuffles have been lording over us for years, and now we're finally taking over this planet, just as easily as I took over this apartment.    Before long, the Tuffles will be the ones begging us to let them stay on Planet Plant."
"I guess you're right," the man said.   "At least until someone stronger comes along and takes it all away from you."
"I like you, kid," Nappa said with a gravely laugh.    "You sure do know how to tell a joke.   What brings you here?"
"I had some questions," he said as he alighted on the balcony.  "I need information, and I heard you knew my father, so I thought I'd start with you."
Nappa eyed the man suspiciously.    "I know a lot of fathers," he said.   "None of them wore long black coats, or carried a sword, though.    What's your dad's name, kid?"
"Vegeta," he said.
Nappa laughed.    Then he looked at the young man more carefully, doing his best to ignore the blue eyes and the lavender hair that hung around his face.   Then he laughed harder.
"Something funny about that?" the man asked.
"I do see a bit of a resemblance," Nappa said.   "Guess King Vegeta II had a few 'unofficial' heirs over the years, huh?   Who knew he had it in him?   So which is it?   You want to blackmail the royal family?    Or were you hoping they'd give you a cushy civil service job?"
"Nothing like that," the man said.   "I just wanted to ask you some questions.    Nothing personal, just general background stuff."
"Yeah?  Well why should I help you?" Nappa asked.    "For that matter, killing you would probably be a smarter play.    One less would-be usurper for the king to worry about, right?  I’m sure your old man would make it worth my while."
"Oh, I probably should have been more specific," the young man said.    "My father isn't Vegeta the Second.    It's Vegeta the Fourth."
Nappa gave him a sidelong glance.    "There is no Vegeta IV," he said warily.
"Not yet, anyway," the man said with a knowing smile.
"That's it, I don't know what your game is, punk, but I'm through playing!" Nappa said.    "You can tell your lies in hell!"
He drew back his arm and threw a punch that would have killed most Saiyans on contact.    Nappa had made a name for himself on the battlefield for defeating entire companies of Tuffle mechatroops all by himself.    He fully expected to turn the young man's head into a cloud of red mist.
Instead, the man blocked his strike with such incredible speed that Nappa couldn't even tell that he had moved.   In one instant, the man had been standing with his hands in his pockets.    And then in the next, the man was now gripping Nappa's palm with his thumb and index finger.    He squeezed slightly, and Nappa nearly dropped to his knees from the pain.
"Nnnghhh!" was the noise he made as he struggled not to show how much it hurt.   His free hand reached up for his scalp, where he tugged at the tuft of thick black hair on his head.
"Look, let's cut to the chase, all right?   For you, this'll only take a few minutes, but I might be doing these interviews all night, so don't waste my time, okay?   Those Tuffles you're fighting might be pushovers, but I'm not.    So now that you know that you can't brute force your way out of this, what'll it be?"
He released Nappa's hand, and Nappa gasped with relief as he cradled it in his other palm.   He stared at his hands for a moment, then at the man.   Then he paused to consider the sword, and how much worse it would get if the young man decided to make use of it.
"Heh.   Uh, yeah, sorry, Your Majesty.   I-I should have recognized you sooner.    Anything you want, just let me know, Prince... uh... Prince... What'd you say your name was?"
"I didn't," he replied.  "So, let's start with a simple one.    Have you ever heard of a Saiyan named Luffa?"
*******
[1 December Age 893, Earth.]
"Honestly, I didn't expect him to know Luffa.    Nappa didn't recognize her when she faced him on a Time Patrol mission, but he did fill me in on a few things."
By Age 889, the arcade game Super Dragon Ball Heroes had become a popular pastime, and the city of Hero Town became the global headquarters for the craze.    Gaming enthusiasts from around the world traveled to Hero Town to partake in the game, which was based upon actual events from the previous century.   Trunks had logged many hours in front of an SDBH cabinet, though his reasons had nothing to do with recreation.   For all its popularity, the game had a very strange secret.    It was the Capsule Corporation who developed the software, but the world within the game was actually made possible by the Time Patrol.   Deep beneath Hero Tower was the Hero Lab, where the Time Patrol occasionally conducted secret research and reconnaissance.
"I don't get it, Master," said a teenage girl standing near one of the main computer terminals that surrounded nearly every surface of the Hero Lab.    "You formed the Dragon Ball Heroes Team to help you defeat Sealas, right?   So why didn't you come to us on this Towa situation?"
"Note's right, Trunks!" said a teenage boy eating mochi from a bag.  "I'm Goku's descendant, after all!   It's not fair to leave me out of a case like this."
Trunks deactivated the Hero Switch device and handed it to Anne, one of the scientists who maintained the lab.    His black trenchcoat and sword hung next to several labcoats on a metal rack in the corner, revealing the olive-green sweater he wore underneath.   He smiled at Note and Beat, and then Dr. Leggings, the project director of the Hero Lab, who was programming the next simulation.
"I understand where you're coming from, kids," Trunks said, "and I appreciate the offer, but it's not that simple."
"Why not?" Beat asked.   "From what you've told us, Luffa's a Saiyan, right?   If that's all you needed, then I could have tackled these missions for you.  I'm a Saiyan, too."
"Oh, here we go..." Note grumbled.  She made sure to roll her eyes dramatically enough for everyone in the room to see.
"What?" Beat asked.    "It's true, isn't it?"
"Beat, even I have Saiyan ancestry," Dr. Leggings said without looking up from her computer terminal.   "After a hundred and thirty years of Saiyans living on Earth, it's not as uncommon as you might think."
"She's right," Trunks said.   "We have a lot of Saiyan-Earthling Time Patrollers back in Toki Toki City from the next century.   A few of the stranger ones call me 'Your Highness', but I try not to hold it against them.      Besides, if all I cared about was Saiyan blood, I'd go to my father for help.   So that's not why I recruited you, or Luffa, for that matter."
"Then why did you recruit Luffa instead of coming to us?" Beat asked.
"Listen,” Trunks said.   “In my timeline, No. 17 and 18 had destroyed much of the world.   Son Gohan was the only Z-fighter left, and he was reluctant to train me.    He needed the help, but he was worried about me getting hurt.    I think eventually he decided he didn't have a choice.    He knew that if anything happened to him, there would have been no one else to defeat the Cyborgs.   But now I understand how his reluctance.    After he... well.... Later on, when I was on my own, I was determined to defeat them alone.   I wanted no part of my mother's plan to use her Time Machine to get help from Goku."
"But, Master, if you hadn't gone back in time," Note said, then you never would have joined the Time Patrol, or formed the Dragon Ball Heroes Team!"
"Exactly," Trunks said.    "Working with Goku and his friends in the past, I learned how valuable it can be to have allies.   It's not just about having extra hands to help with the hard work.   You can learn from each new friend you make.    And they can learn from you, as well.    I think that's why the Supreme Kai of Time created the Time Patrol in the first place.  So it wouldn't be right to keep turning to the same handful of allies every time.  Besides, I need you guys here, keeping an eye on things in Hero Town."
"Well, yeah," Beat said.   "I guess that makes sense.   But it's been so dull around here lately."
"Tell you what," Trunks offered.   "Once things settle down in Toki Toki City, I'll pull a few strings, maybe bring you guys in on a Time Patrol mission.   How's that sound?"
"Really?!" Note cheered.   She jumped into the air and kicked her heels behind her with excitement.
"Awesome!" Beat said.
"Don't get too carried away," Trunks said.    "I can't make any promises.   Ultimately, it's up to the Supreme Kai of Time.    But I think we can manage something."
"I think we're ready for the next session, sir," Leggings said.   "Assuming these coordinates you gave us are valid.   Are you sure we can trust Nappa?"
"She's right, Master," Note added.    "He's bad news.   Just because you're stronger than he is doesn't mean he would have had any reason to tell you the truth."
"Which is exactly why I'm using Hero Lab to access the game world instead of traveling back in time," Trunks explained.   "Our research teams back in Toki Toki City are constantly using time machines to observe historical events, but they can't interact with anything or ask questions, because it might alter history."
"But the SDBH game is a simulation based upon the Scroll of Eternity itself," Dr. Leggings said.    "Meaning it's a nearly perfect copy of the real world, one that you can tamper with and not have to worry about permanently changing anything."
"Of course!" Note said.   "It's like how Sealas used the game to learn what changes he could make to alter history.   He used the game like a practice run for the real thing."
"Only, instead of changing the way things happened in the past," Beat said, "you're using the game to find out how things are supposed to have turned out.   But how does that help you learn anything about Luffa?"
"I asked Shenron to bring me a powerful ally," Trunks said.    "I should have been more specific about the wish, but I was kind of desperate for the help.   Shenron sent me Luffa, but she had no idea what was going on, and neither of us knows how to get her back where she came from.   She talked to one of our historians, and it's starting to sound like she's from some other part of the universe, or maybe from another timeline.   But wherever she's from, she's still a Saiyan, and not a descendant of Goku or Vegeta, like we are.    So I think if I go far enough into the past, I'll find some historical information we have in common, and maybe I can follow that thread back to her home."
"Phew!" Beat said.   "That sounds like a lot of work!  I'm worn out just thinking about it."
"You're not even doing anything," Note muttered.
"There's no telling what kind of trouble I might run into in the simulated history," Trunks said.   Dr. Leggings has only ever run the simulation in a very narrow time range.   A few centuries at most.   I may end up taking the simulation into uncharted territory, and everything I know about Saiyans tells me that they had plenty of enemies to fight.    If things get hairy, I'll need some backup, and that's where you two come in.   I can't think of anyone better qualified than my two top students."
"Gosh...!" Note said.
"Yeah!  Now you're talking!" Beat cheered.
Anne handed the Hero Switch back to Trunks.   The device was a powerful computer, but it looked like a black bracelet covered in glowing blue lights and a Capsule Corp. logo.   Trunks placed it onto his right wrist and prepared to activate it.
"In the game world," he said, "Nappa told me that "Saiya" was a name for several planets colonized by Saiyans throughout history.   The most recent one was destroyed around four hundred years ago.    Hopefully, someone there will know more about King Rehval, or the Camelian Empire, or this Planet Nagaoka that Luffa once mentioned."
"What if they don't know, sir?" Anne asked.
"Then I'll have to keep traveling backward until I find someone who does," Trunks said.   "Wish me luck."
"Wait, Trunks, one more thing before you go!" Dr. Leggings said urgently.
"Huh?   What's wrong?" Trunks asked.    He held up the Hero Switch on his wrist and pointed at it.   "Everything looks good on this end."
"It's just... are you sure you don't want to wear the Great Saiyaman 3 outfit for this mission?" she asked.
"I'm positive," Trunks said.   Before anyone could object, he activated the bracelet, and vanished into the game world.
*******
[12 May, Age 513.    Planet Saiya.]
"You picked a fine time to ask about the weather, stranger."
The Saiyan’s name was Reeque, and Trunks had no idea how old she was.   The small settlement he found on Saiya was it's largest population center, and they directed him to an old hag who lived in the wastelands.   Trunks found her easily enough, but then the blood-wraiths attacked, and they had to take their conversation on the run.   Powerful as Trunks was, his technology and ki were useless against the intangible creatures, and Reeque's warnings were enough to convince him that he should keep his distance.
"They become solid every seven months," Reeque told him.   "Then we pay them back a thousandfold, but in the meantime, we run and hide until dawn.    They say the storms left them behind, but I doubt that.   Not even Luffa would be so cruel."
She carried a walking stick carved from some gnarled length of driftwood, but Trunks was impressed with how swiftly she crossed the rough terrain.    Her dark red robes flapped behind her back like the wings of some great ugly hawk.
"I apologize for not making myself clear, ma'am," Trunks said as he hopped over a rock.    "The Luffa I asked about is a Saiyan, not a storm system."
"Well that's perfectly clear to me, boy," Reeque said, "but it doesn't change the fact that you're mistaken.   Only Luffa I've ever heard of is the one my great grandmother told me about.     Wiped out the entire Kingdom of Saiya in a single day.   The smart ones fled while they could.   The rest stayed, but only the hardiest few survived.   The environment here was harsh before Luffa, and it only got worse from there.    Without the supplies from allied worlds... well, you learn to savor the taste of roast blood-wraith."
"Then where did the Saiyans go when they abandoned this planet?" Trunks asked.
"Hell," Reeque said.   "If there's any justice, they went to hell.  Otherwise they scattered across the galaxy.     There was a kingdom on Sadala, but my life wouldn't be worth a zinc coin on that forsaken place.   My parents were banished, and they joined the usurper kings during the civil wars.    Fifty years ago, they tried to rebuild Saiya, like the name alone would restore their fortunes.   But there's nothing left here.  Nothing but blood-wraiths and ruin."
None of this was surprising to Trunks, since Nappa had told him this planet would eventually be destroyed altogether.   He had tried to arrive on Saiya well before that day, but it seemed like the destruction of Saiya had been set into motion long before whatever warrior finally put it out of its misery.
"And King Rehval?" Trunks asked.    "What became of him?"
"Why should you care, boy?" Reeque asked.    "You've come a long way in search of the dead."
"I think he's my ancestor," Trunks said.    "I, uh, I'm trying to settle a dowry on another planet, and they're very interested in genealogies."
"Social climber, huh?" Reeque said.   "Well, I can't help you with that.   Anything else you wanted to know?"
"The Camelian Empire," Trunks said.   "Do you know where I can find it?   I don't need exact coordinates, just a general idea will do.  Er, is something wrong, ma'am?"
She began to make a sort of rhythmic coughing sound from her throat, and Trunks eventually figured out that it was laughter.    "You're an amusing fellow," Reeque finally said.   "When I saw that purple hair of yours, I thought I might be seeing things, but my imagination isn't wild enough to dream up such silly questions.   Oh, I've spent countless nights like this one, running from bloodwraiths, but I think I'll remember tonight for a long time to come."
"Then you can't tell me about Camelia either," Trunks said.
"There's nothing to tell, boy," Reeque said with a rasping chuckle.    "The Camelian Empire fell more than three hundred years ago!"
*******
[23 February, 238 Before Age.    Chai I.]
"The ‘Super Saiyan’?   Now what in the world is that, Trunks?"
"It's a legend I heard when I was a boy," Trunks said.   "According to my father, once every thousand years, there's a Saiyan who surpasses the limits of what Saiyans can do.   They're considered the ultimate warriors.   Powerful, invincible, and with an insatiable craving for battle."
Rehval III considered this tale for a moment while admiring the bouquet of his wine.   At last, he took a sip from his glass, and sampled a bite of his fish entree.  Trunks waited patiently at the other side of the table.   The restaurant looked fancier than any Trunks had ever seen on Earth, in any century.   And this was merely a section of a minor administrative building in the Camelian capitol.
"I'll be blunt, Trunks,” Rehval finally said.    “You seem like the kind of man who likes to get to the point, so I won’t keep you in suspense.   I have no idea what you're talking about."
"I see," Trunks said.
"Do you believe in this legend yourself?" Rehval asked.
"No," Trunks said after a pause.  "In my experience there's no such thing as an invincible warrior.  There are extraordinary Saiyans, but not necessarily one every thousand years.    There could be two or three, or a hundred, or none at all."
"I'll tell you what I think," Rehval said.   "I have heard tall tales of ancient Saiyan heroes.   Chanisp was said to have lived about a thousand years ago.    For all I know, they've been saying "a thousand years ago" for centuries.   I mean, a year ago, was anyone saying Chanisp lived 'nine-hundred and ninety-nine years ago'?   Of course not.   The round numbers make for better storytelling, but I deal in precision."
Rehval paused his meal to point at a gold watch on his left wrist.    "My summit with the Camelian Imperial College begins in three hours and twenty-two minutes, Trunks.   I can't afford to offend the Camelians by rounding up.    Time can be a strict mistress."
"I take your point," Trunks said.    "And I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me."
"Not at all," Rehval said.   "There aren't many Saiyans in this part of the galaxy, besides common raiders, I mean.   And you're a man of unusual manners and poise, Trunks.   You're exactly the sort of citizen I want in the Kingdom of Saiya.    I think you'd find life very prosperous under my rule."
"I am... interested in hearing more," Trunks said.    "Let's put it that way."
"Well, then, it's a good thing you found me during this gap in my schedule," Rehval said.    "I have all afternoon to convince you to come home with me."
Trunks smiled as though amused by his remark.    In fact, this had been his third attempt to speak with King Rehval III.   An earlier visit to the Camelian capital world gave him access to important diplomatic records, which showed him the exact date and time of an official visit by the Saiyan King.    Trunks found him on the first try, but he was too busy to talk.    Trunks reset the game world simulation and tried again, approaching Rehval three hours earlier, but wasn't able to catch the man's interest.    This time, he figured out that the key to Rehval's attention was to show interest in joining his cause.   Rehval’s Kingdom was the most powerful Saiyan faction in this era, but his subjects made up less than half of the Saiyan population, and Rehval was very keen on getting more Saiyans to rally to his flag.     Even half-aliens like Trunks were welcome, apparently.
"Where did you say your mother was from?" Rehval asked.    Trunks was pretty sure Rehval had aims for establishing diplomatic ties with Earth, even if he had no idea where it was or if it was worth his time.
"The Yajirobe System," Trunks lied.  "It's pretty far off the beaten path.     But what were you saying about Chanisp?"
"Well, there are lower classes in every society, Trunks," Rehval explained.   "It's not something Saiyans think about much, but other civilizations have demonstrated it time and time again.    The problem is that, in disorganized societies, these lesser citizens don't understand that they have a duty to follow their betters.    And so, in their confusion, they turn to superstitions."
"Go on..." Trunks said.    He took a bite of his salad and chewed thoroughly.
"They say Chanisp defeated a mighty demon and liberated the entire Saiyan race from slavery.    Did it actually happen?    Maybe.   Was he one of your father's 'Super Saiyans'?    He might have been.   How does any of that prove that there should be another one like him ten centuries later?   Oh, and the cycle just happens to reset in the present day.   So the tale expects us to believe that, at any moment, any one of us might miraculously transform into an invincible, demon-slaying superhero.   How convenient."
"Well, when you put it that way..." Trunks said.
"I'm not one to brag, Trunks, but as far as I know, the strongest Saiyan alive is sitting across the table from you.   That's not a challenge, or a demand for respect, just a statement of fact.   I'd have to be stronger to be the king, or I wouldn't be the king for very long, now would I?"
"Makes sense to me," Trunks lied again.
He only brought up the legend to gain historical context.   Rehval seemed to enjoy discussing it, so that worked to Trunks’ favor, but what he had truly wanted to know was whether Rehval had heard of a golden-haired cryptid running amok in the galaxy.   He had not, which meant that there had been no Super Saiyan in this era, or that the Super Saiyan hadn’t appeared yet.
"These legends are just stories people invent to convince themselves that there's a way out of their reality.     When the thousandth year passes, they move the goalpost, or invent a new story to replace the old.   'Oh, the Super Saiyan is real, he's just invisible and working in secret, but he really is here to help us all.'   That sort of thing."
"And that's why you're pursuing diplomatic ties with Camelia," Trunks concluded.  "You can't afford to wait for a messiah."
"The Saiyans are at a crossroads, Trunks," Rehval said.    "If our race is going to survive, we need to follow the same well-tread path as the Camelian Empire.    Statecraft.   National unity.   It's not as romantic as your father's legend, but it works.    It's a path that leads to prosperity.    If we all unite as one kingdom, under one law, then we grow stronger as a people.   That means forming alliances, brokering treaties, and all the other minutiae that goes with it."
"Well, this has been a very interesting discussion, but I'm afraid I need to get going," Trunks said.   He stood up from his chair and gestured to the waiter to bring his coat and sword.    "It's been a pleasure, Your Majesty."
"Wait," Rehval said.   "I thought you wanted to hear more about Planet Saiya.   The great society that I'm building there.   I'd like you to be a part of that society, Trunks."
"I'm sure you would," Trunks said as he put his arms through the sleeves of his coat.    "But I've already seen how Saiya turns out, and I'm already a part of the society you envisioned.   What's left of it, anyway."
"I don't understand."
"It's simple.   Your vision isn't all that visionary, Rehval.   No matter how strong you think you are, there's always someone stronger who'll come along to challenge you.   That's not a leader, that's a gunfighter daring someone to come along and defeat him.   I've grew up in a world ruled by strength alone, and you're half-right.   It is a well-worn path, but it doesn't lead to prosperity."
"What do mean you've already seen Saiya?" Rehval asked.   "Who are you?"
Trunks activated the bracelet on his arm, and vanished from the game world.    The simulated Rehval who existed within it was left with more questions than answers, though he would not ponder them for long.    Soon enough, the simulation would be refreshed, and he would have no memory of this encounter.

I'm rewatching Code Lyoko with my little brother and honestly it's so much more better than I remember it to be. (I watched it back when I was in elementary.) And I'm enjoying it so much and I love how mature yet fun it is!
I'm only in season one but I can honestly say that this is what Miraculous could have been. There are so many similarities here!
-Both French animated series
-Heroes must keep their identities secret
-A popular girl interested in one of the male leads
-The villain corrupts something/someone and the heroes have to protect their world/city from a problem caused by a villain
-The problem caused by the villain is always different, forcing the heroes to think differently each time
-Once their job is accomplished, they revert time to when it was normal
-Representation both in background characters and main characters!!
-Fighting scenes
There are so many similarities but Code Lyoko showed in just one season that they can keep the viewers on their toes at all time and there's FREAKEN CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Like with Miraculous, we know that Ladybug is going to use Lucky Charm to find a solution and then de-akumatize the villain before reverting back time but it feels so repetitive and not really in a creative way. In Code Lyoko, they have to protect Aelita so she can deactivate the contaminated tower before reverting back time, but the situation that leads to it are so diverse and unique that it doesn't feel repetitive. The situation in the virtual world changes depending on the number of players, the environment and the type of enemies fighting against them. Then the situation of the outside would could be... anything honestly. So far, it ranged from their hideout getting destroyed from the inside to a bacterial attack to freaken bees attacking and to having gravity deactivated and killing everyone. Basically, there's tension both outside and inside the virtual world. And did I mention that there's actually stakes??? Like, I know they're going to end up reverting back time but there are times where I was worried that they wouldn't make it. Also, they...talk? Like, they talk about how they often have to revert back time and how tired they could be from fighting against Xana and going to school? They talk about relationships and the relationship actually grows???
I can go on and on comparing them but I don't want to ramble and while I enjoy Miraculous I'm not going to deny that it could have been so much more :(

Their Hero Academia - Chapter 83: Of Sound and Wings
Continuing my nextgen MHA fic!
Earlier chapters can be found here
To say Toshi was worried was an understatement.  While no one had said anything bad would happen if they lost the relay, that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to give it his all. Which meant he had to make sure he wasn’t going to let anyone else down either.  And he was more than certain that, however the relay worked out, Aizawa and Uncle Kacchan would be using whatever he saw to help format their lessons going forward.  Their teacher would just use any failings to push them all the harder.
He couldn’t allow his differences with Tatsuma to be the reason they failed.  While there hadn’t been any more violence or any scuffles between the U.A. and Shiketsu students (Not even from Katsumi, which seemed to be a minor miracle in and of itself), there was still a strained feeling when some members of the two groups interacted.  And Tatsuma had made a point of avoiding him.
He needed to be able to clear the air with the Shiketsu girl.  Even if there was still bad blood afterwards, he needed to apologize and he needed to make sure that they’d be able to work together.  Plenty of Heroes didn’t get along off the field but could put their differences aside enough to fight alongside each other.  He would have liked to at least get to that point.
They had a few minutes before they had to start getting ready, so he sought her out, finding her standing alone.  The other Shiketsu students looked to have already peeled off to find their respective U.A. partners.
“Ah, hey, Tatsuma,” he began.  “Do you have a minute to talk?”
Tatsuma didn’t budge an inch. When she spoke she didn’t even turn around. “Later than I expected this to happen. The instructors have forced your hand.”
Toshi frowned and swallowed nervously.  “You’re right,” he said.  “I have been putting this off.”  Not very heroic of him, really.  “And the timing makes it look even less great than it already is.”
Best to just get it out there.
“I owe you an apology.”
She turned to look at him now. With her arms crossed and her stoic stance, it made her already tall figure even more imposing.
“For what?” The question is not one of confusion or lack of knowledge, but rather did he understand what he should be sorry about.
Toshi was of average height for his age, with maybe a few more inches to go, but the way Tatsuma simply towered over most people did nothing to ease the situation.  “I was pretty insensitive when we talked near the beginning of the camp,” he began.  “And didn’t do a good job of listening to what you were actually saying.  It’s been pointed out that I don’t always see the privileged position my family gives me and I trivialized something very important to you.”
He looked up.  “And for that, I’m sorry.”
Tatsuma listened, looking at him carefully before speaking. “Well I can’t find a realistic problem with your apology. So..thank you.” Her eyes narrowed a bit. “I’d argue it’s something many Heroes should see as important, but now is a pointless time to argue it.”
Toshi nodded.  It was about as good a reaction as he could have hoped for.  Tatsuma didn’t seem like the type to lash out violently, the way Katsumi might (Though in truth, Katsumi was always more bark than bite), but he’d been deeply afraid of making things worse.  He was a Class Representative.  He was supposed to be a leader, someone others looked to and who helped make things right, not someone who caused trouble with other schools.
“You’re not wrong,” he agreed.  “I’ve grown up around enough Heroes, not just my family…”   He winced slightly.  A reminder of all that probably wasn’t the best choice of words.  “But a lot of them question if they’re not good enough, if they’re not doing enough.  And their failures stay with them too.”
Dad didn’t talk about it much.  He wanted to keep a smiling face, especially for this family.  But as Toshi had gotten older, he’d been more willing to talk about the lives he couldn’t save, the times he was too slow or too late.  He’d wanted to impress upon Toshi that being a Hero could bring great joy, but that it would weigh you down too.
“I don’t know why the press or the public treated your mother differently.  But she didn’t deserve that.”
For a time, he had had her attention. Maybe he’d gotten this right. Tatsuma was also a Class Rep. and as such she represented her school. As much as she may have wanted to show up UA, she had to know holding grudges like that weren’t good for anybody.  And it was true that in the past, the rankings had led to a lot of damaging and toxic behavior.  You just had to look at Izzy’s grandfather for that.  But things were different now, right?  But when he mentioned her mother, he suddenly felt the situation change, the hairs on the back of his next standing up.
Human life had started long after the dinosaurs had died out, despite what a lot of science fiction would have people believe.  But if a man had been threatened by a t-rex, he was certain it would felt like what he was feeling now.
Toshi would later swear that he saw Tatsuma’s eyes go red. “Because of the damn rankings!” Smoke started to unfurl from her nostrils. “She fell from the all-mighty Top Ten! The heroes of all heroes! You think anyone says anything if someone drops a rank in the 20’s or 30’s? No, no one cares about their efforts. But if someone can’t cut being in the Top Ten-!” Her skin looked like a very thin layer of scales was forming.
“That's all my mother ever heard! ‘You couldn’t cut it.’ ‘Leave it to the men!’ ‘You weren’t meant to be among the elite!” All because of how the rankings portray what Heroes are supposed to be!”
She was now towering over Toshi now. “I won’t dismiss what your father has done for this country, or any of the others in the Ten, but if you can’t see how it has also harmed those who have done nothing but sacrificed-!” Her hands clenched. She was very, VERY close, then snarled and turned away.
“Seung’s worked too hard to keep her emotions in control. I can’t disgrace that effort.” Tatsuma let out a breath, a steaming hot one. “You’ll never get it. You’re too ingrained. I should probably just accept that.” She was quiet for a moment, before finally speaking up again. “What else did you want?”
To his credit, Toshi had managed to stand his ground during Tatsuma’s tirade, only taking a slight step backwards once. As it was, he could feel his heart pounding in his chest.  “I’m sorry,” he began.  “This is important to you, I can tell.   And I’m sorry for the pain it’s caused you and your mom.  What happened to her wasn’t right and wasn’t fair.”
He straightened up a little.  Maybe this was too much meddling.  But wasn’t meddling the job of a Hero?  Tatsuma had so much anger in her, it was going to consume if she didn’t find a way to break it.
“And maybe I am too close to see some things.  But I’m also close enough to a lot of things to see some of the details.  When your mother started dropping in rankings, it was a different time.  The world was still hurting from the loss of All Might and wanted its Heroes to be more perfect than they were, than they could actually be.  I don’t know, can’t know, if that was the cause, but I’d be surprised if that didn’t have something to do with it. And none of that would make it right or fair if it did.
“But while I can’t quote you chapter and verse like Shota could, I can tell you that plenty of people have risen and fallen out of the Top Ten in the last decade or more, and only the trashiest and least reputable ‘news’ sources and commentators are bad mouthing them.  Creati dropped down to Number Eleven a while back.  And you know what she did?  She congratulated Rodeo, who jumped up to Seven and knocked her ranking down.”
He frowned.  “What happened to Ryukyu wasn’t right.  I agree with you on that.  And you’ve every right to be angry about it.  But I don’t think it’s like that anymore.”
He shook his head.  Maybe there was still something he was missing.  But he had to try and bridge that gap.  “But maybe you’re right.  Maybe this is something we can’t agree on.  But can we work together?”
She looked back at him. “If Ground Zero and Deku could learn to work together, it would be embarrassing and shameful if we couldn’t.” There is the vaguest hint of a smile. Maybe he’d said some of the right things.  At least, he hadn’t made it any worse.
Toshi gave her a small smile of his own.  “Oh, the stories I could tell you about that…”
***
The Rookies’ relay course was set up in the woodlands around their compound, virtually invisible from the treetops, but complicated once you got to it.  There were bridges and swings, with complex structures built into the trees.  The tree line itself was thick with trees and other vegetation, making it difficult to see where any attack might be coming from.  Fortunately, their path was pretty straightforward.
“You got Tomodachi okay?” Inuzaki asked.  He was ahead of Shota, in dog form, pausing every so often to sniff the air.
“Good enough,” Shota told him. The “civilian” they were rescuing was a training dummy, like the kind they used at U.A.  It was about the size of an adult man and loaded with sensors that would tally up injuries and damage.  They had immediately decided that he’d needed a name. Shota had him over his shoulders in a fireman’s carry.  He didn’t need his arms free to use his Quirk, after all.
“He’s pretty heavy though!” Shota said.  “Maybe he should run the course too!”  He was in good shape—you couldn’t be in the Hero course and not be—but he wasn’t anywhere near as fit as Toshi, Kirishima-Bakugo, or Shoji.  Even Inuzaki was in better shape than him when he was in human form.  Still, his joke did get a laugh out of Inuzaki, so it was worth it.
Dad always said you had to take care of your body as much as your Quirk.  Maybe he needed to start working out more.  Toshi was always working out.  But he got up so early to do it!
 “Smell anything?” Shota asked.
Inuzaki stopped and shook his head.  “Maybe.  Lots of smells.  I can smell people.  Mostly the Rookies.  They’ve been through here a lot.  Might be trying to make it confusing.”
“Let me try,” Shota said.  He took in a breath then started to unleash one of his sonar-screams, but stopped when Inuzaki started whining.
He cut the scream immediately.  “What, what is it?” Shota asked.
Inuzaki winced.  “Your scream hurt my ears,” he said, quietly.  “It was like a knife through my skull!”
Crap!  His Quirk and Inuzaki’s weren’t compatible?  How were they going to do this?  He had to scream to use his Quirk!  When they got attacked, he’d have to use it!  But if it hurt his friend, then what could he do?  Maybe it was only certain frequencies?
“That’s only when you’re a dog, right?” Shota asked.  “Change back for a second.  I’ll get a quick look and then we can keep going.”
“Okay,” Inuzaki agreed.  He stopped though, his back leg scratching at his ear.  “Hang on, gotta scratch first.”
“Oh!  How cute!”
The girlish voice seemed to come from nowhere.  It could only be Ojiro!  But where was she?!
Inuzaki sniffed.  “Ah ha!  Got you!”  He jumped up and seemed to collide with something in mid-air.  Ojiro reappeared as they hit the ground.
“Oh, dang it!” Ojiro cried out.  She tried to get up, but Inuzaki’s weight was keeping her down.  “I got distracted!
“Hold her still!” Shota said.  They’d been given ‘capture cuffs’ so that they could harmlessly take their classmates out of the fight, though there was a good chance they’d have to do at least a little damage.  He had some in his pocket, but he also had the dummy!  Crap!  What were they going to…  Inuzaki changed back to his human form in a puff of smoke.  He had capture cuffs too!  Right.  Why was he worried?
Ojiro was quick though, using that moment of transition to act.  She brought her legs up, flipping Inuzaki over her, then sprang up to her feet.  “So close!” she said.  “But not quick enough!”  Meanwhile, Inuzaki changed back to dog form in midair, landing easily.  He and Ojiro circled each other warily.
Before he could help, the ground started shaking.  Shota swallowed hard.  He remembered now, one of Class 1-B had a vibration-based Quirk, didn’t she?  Mio Yamaguchi, a dark haired girl.
The vibrations picked up intensely, knocking Shota off his feet.  He hit the ground, twisting to minimize the damage to Tomodachi, but he knew he took at least a small hit.  “Sorry, sorry, sorry,” Shota told the dummy.  Carefully getting back to his feet, he looked around for any sign of Yamaguchi or anyone else.  Behind him, he could hear the sounds of Ojiro and Inuzaki fighting.
He wanted to help.  He really did.  But if there was more trouble coming, somebody had to watch.
Doing the right thing sucked sometimes.   But he had to trust that Inuzaki was going to be able to handle it.   “Better hold your ears, Tomodachi,” he told the dummy.  “It might get loud!”  If he kept his powers really focused, hopefully he’d wouldn’t hurt Inuzaki either.
There.  Yamaguchi stepped into view, looking beyond Shota.  “Can’t you catch one dog, Ojiro?” she asked, sounding annoyed.
From behind him, Ojiro called out.  “It’s really hard!  He’s really fast!”
Yamaguchi rolled her eyes.  “Okay, let me just take care of the kid and I’ll help.”  She brought up both of her hands, unleashing vibrational waves that seemed to blur the air in front of her.
Dang it!  Just because he was short and a few months younger, it didn’t mean he was a baby!  Why did everybody treat him like he was a little kid!
“YOU’RE NOT GONNA STOP ME!” he shouted, clenching his fists.  He unleashed his Quirk, turning a shout into a broad sonic wave.  His wave met Yamaguchi’s vibrational blast in mid-air, where there was a small explosion of air as the two different waves hit each other, before his own caused hers to dispense. Somewhere behind him, he heard Inuzaki yelp.  He just prayed his new friend could hold on.
“What?” Yamaguchi said.  “How’d you do that?”
Shota grinned.  “I canceled out your vibrations with my own!”  Maybe not as good as Uncle Shota’s Erasure, but his sonic vibrations could stop hers well enough.
Again and again, Yamaguchi threw her vibrational blasts at him, but Shota kept canceling them out. Her vibrations were at least as strong as his sonics.  Keepings up that kind of pace, matching vibration with vibration, was making his skull rattle. Even without the blasts hitting him, he could practically feel the vibrations in his bones.  Even though he wasn’t used to fighting someone with powers even a little bit like his own, he was holding his ground, but if he didn’t do something, he was sure to lose!
“Okay, that’s it…” Yamaguchi said. A look of annoyance crossed her face. “Guess it’s time to bring down the house!”  Her eyes narrowed and she brought both hands together and pointed them down, ready to unleash another vibrational blast.  The air was practically humming as she charged up her power.  He had to do something… now!
Shota took in another breath and screamed, hitting the ground under Yamaguchi with a carefully modulated sonic pulse.  While he mostly used his Quirk for purely destructive sonic screams, he could do so much more than that depending on the frequencies he hit.  Everything from sonar to force fields to all kinds of other effects.  In this case, he could hyper-agitate molecules causing…
An explosion!  It wasn’t a big one, but the ground underneath Yamaguchi exploded, knocking her off her feet and several feet back.  As she landed, Shota rushed over, unclipping one of the capture cuffs from his belt.  Yamaguchi was still trying to get her bearings when he slapped one end on her wrist and then the other.
“All right!” he cheered.  “Got you!”
Yamaguchi just stared at him, then rolled her eyes.  “Monoma’s never going to let me hear the end of this.”
Shota wondered why Monoma would give her a hard time.  She tried her best!
“Oh, dang it!  This is so unfair!  How you can you be this cute and this tough?!  IF YOU WERE CLOSER, I’D GIVE YOU SUCH A SMACK!”
Shota’s attention was instantly drawn to where Inuzaki had managed to corner Ojiro.  She’d climbed up into a tree, and Inuzaki was back in dog form, circling the bottom of it.
Inuzaki transformed back to his human shape.  “Can you get her down?  I’m not so good with climbing.”
Shota nodded.  “Let me try this one…”   He let lose another scream, shifting the pitch a bit.   This time, when his sonic attack hit the tree, it began to shake and vibrate violently, but it didn’t explode.
“Nnnnnnnoooo  fffffaaaaiiiirrrrr,” Ojiro wailed.  She was struggling to hang on and ultimately lost the fight.  She fell, landing flat on the ground.  “Ouch…”   She held her up arms.  “Just cuff me already.”
***
They’d probably gone another two kilometers, easy.  Shota wasn’t really good with eyeballing distances.  Every now and then, they’d trade off, with Inuzaki resuming his human form so he could carry Tomodachi and so Shota could scan the area with sonar.  But the forest was so thick with trees and everything else, it was hard to see anything that way.  Buildings were a lot easier.
“How much further?” he asked.  He was pretty sure they’d been told how far they had to travel for the hand-off, but he may not have been paying the best attention.
“About another couple kilometers,” Inuzaki said.  “I think.  Everything looks bigger from down here.”
Not too much farther then.  But there were definitely more of his classmates or schoolmates out there, waiting for them.  Unless they were really dogpiling the other teams, there had to be at least one, maybe two more coming after them.  Even Shota could do that kind of math.
“Do you smell anything?” Shota asked.  It hadn’t worked so well last time, not with all the other smells in the forest, but maybe they’d get lucky.
Inuzaki made a weird face, one which looked even stranger on a dog.  “I smell something,” he said.  “Like ink, maybe?”
“Oh!” Shota said.  He knew who that was!  “Fukidashi!”
“The cartoon girl?” Inuzaki asked.  He sounded a little annoyed, which was surprising, given how well he got on with everyone.  “I tried talking to her a few times, but every time I did, she just kept going on about how cute I was. Just like the invisible girl. It got old really fast.”
Shota frowned, looking around.  Where could she be?  His eyes fell on a strange looking patch of ground.  “Do you see that?” he asked, pointing.
“Is that patch of ground a different color?” Inuzaki asked, curiously.
Shota bent down and grabbed a stick from the ground.  Getting back up with Tomodachi on his shoulders was tricky, but he managed it.  He gave the stick a toss towards the patch of ground.
The stick hit something, making a small thunk sound.  Instantly, Anime Fukidashi sprang from the patch on the ground, partially covered in leaves and dirt.  “Aw,” Fukidashi said as she landed.  “How did you know?!”
“The ground was a different color,” Inuzaki said.  He bent down low, ready to pounce.
“Dammit!” Fukidashi yelled.  Her head somehow got larger as she yelled, becoming larger than the rest of her body.  “Betrayed by the drawing on the animation cell!”
Inuzaki looked over at Shota.  “Is she all right?” he asked.  Shota just shrugged.  Even he and Toshi had no real idea how her Quirk worked or how it affected her.
Before any of them could act, suddenly, something snaked around Tomodachi, yanking him off Shota’s shoulders!  There was Kaminari, coming out of the bushes behind Fukidashi, her Cords wrapped around the dummy and dragging it towards her.  He could even see a few sparks dancing across her Cords and areas of the dummy lighting up as it registered damage.
“Nice job being the distraction, Fukidashi,” Kaminari said.  Her expression turned slightly apologetic.  “Sorry Shinso, but you’re not winning this one.”
He couldn’t get in a good sonic blast with her holding Tomodachi like that.  He was in the way and she could still shock him either way.  “Aw, c’mon, Kaminari,” he said sadly.  “We gotta win this one!  Everybody’s counting on us!  I don’t want to disappoint everybody!  I just…  I just gotta…”
Her face fell as he talked.  There.  There was his moment.  “Aaaaah!” Shota let out a shout, a regular one, and charged, tackling Kaminari about the middle and knocking her to the ground. He hated tricking her like that, but if everybody was going treat him like a little kid, then maybe he should take advantage of that. He landed on top of her, with his head on her…  He jerked his head up quickly!
Kaminari’s Cords reflexively reeled in when he tackled her, but as she soon as she was able, her Cords poked into his back and unleashed a jolt of electricity.  It wasn’t a strong shock, just enough to make him release his grip, but it still hurt.  Shota let out a cry of pain and let go, as Kaminari shoved him off her.  As he hit the ground, he could see Fukidashi trying to hit Inuzaki with a comically oversized hammer.
“Dang it!” Fukidashi yelled when her latest hammer strike failed to hit Inuzaki.  “Why won’t the music change?  Isn’t he a comedy character?!”
Kaminari, meanwhile, was back on her feet, heading for Tomodachi again.  She was too close!  If he missed with a sonic blast, he’d hit the dummy.  But he’d been working hard on his Quirk all through the camp.  And Bioshock helped him figure out some other pitches he could use.  If he could go high, Bioshock had said, he could go low.
Infrasound.
He opened his mouth and pitched his sonic power low, buffeting Kaminari with waves of low-frequency sound.  She stopped in her tracks, suddenly clutching her stomach.  She wobbled on her feet, before falling to her knees, throwing up.   Shota was already on his feet, running past her.  “Sorry!” he called out.  “It won’t last long, I promise!  Sorry!  Sorry!  Sorry!”
As quick as he could, he hoisted Tomodachi over his shoulders again.
Inuzaki had Fukidashi cornered now, growling.   She let the hammer fall from her hands and it vanished as soon as it let her fingers.  “Sure, now the dramatic music plays.”
Inzuki reared up and hit Fukidashi hard with both front paws, knocking her to the ground.  She hit her head on the ground and laid there, stunned, with little cartoon birds floating around her head.
Shota definitely didn’t understand how her Quirk worked.
“C’mon,” he said, moving as fast as he could.  “They won’t be down for long!”
He and Inuzaki ran.  Soon enough, he could see Kocho and Shida waiting up ahead, standing next to a small sign that clearly marked the second leg of the relay.
They’d done it!
***
Shinso and Inuzaki had definitely looked worse for wear by the time they’d arrived and handed off the training dummy (Which they’d named, for some reason.) to Koharu and Shida.  The two had spun a tale of being ambushed twice, but had managed to successfully fight their way through.  It gave her a good idea of what to expect.  There would probably be at least four attackers then, though there might be more.  She’d done the math. There weren’t quite enough students for a totally even split.
At least for now, Shida was carrying the dummy.  With her spider-legs carrying her in a way that reminded Koharu a lot of how Shoji traveled with his own Quirk, she was able to hold the dummy in her arms and remain mobile.  Koharu herself was flapping her wings, floating just a bit above ground level.  That way, if they needed to engage, she wouldn’t waste any time on a takeoff.  The forest canopy, for now, meant moments to fly really high were going to be few and far between, but there was enough space between the trees that someone could still fly under it.
And flying above the canopy had been strictly prohibited.  Even if it wasn’t against the rules, there were several other students with flight Quirks and it was likely at least one of them would be playing the Villain for their leg of the relay.  And she’d be leaving Shida behind if she did that, which seemed like it would defeat the purpose of the exercise.
None of which did anything to quell her body’s primary panic at the spider-like aspects of the Shiketsu girl.  Given there were spiders that ate moths, it was a natural reaction for animal-type Quirks like theirs. She was getting better at it than when the camp had started, though.  It helped that the other girl was incredibly nice (and, she admitted with a blush, rather cute), but her instinctive reaction was still just below the surface.
On the plus side, the two of them were going to be incredibly hard to sneak up on.  Between Shida’s multiple-eyes and her own antenna, they had a range of extra-sensory perception.
“See anything?” Koharu asked quietly.  Her antennae weren’t giving her any good information, unless you counted knowing where several squirrels and more than a few birds were.
“Not yet.” Shida said. If she’d noticed that Koharu tended to keep her distance from her, she didn’t let on but she seemed happy enough to be working with her. Her six eyes glanced about in multiple directions. “I doubt that will be the case much longer.” It didn’t help that she wasn’t sure where exactly to look. Knowing who the “Villains” were would have helped, but Heroes seldom had a heads-up.
“Me neither,” she replied.  But Shida was right.  Sooner than later was to be expected.
It didn’t take long for that sooner to become now.  There was a great cracking sound and one of the trees fell, blocking the way forward for a moment.  Someone strong then, or maybe Kaniyashiki from 1-B with her scissor Quirk?  But even then, between her ability to fly and Shida’s legs, it would only slow them down for a minute.  So what was their enemy’s plan?
A sound like jet engines told her what it was: a distraction!
Faster than a bullet, one of the Iida twins--Sora, she realized--blasted through the air right towards them.  She was fast enough that Koharu couldn’t react in time to stop her, only to get out of the way.  Iida stuck an arm out as she flew past, grabbing the arm of the dummy Shida was carrying as she tried to rocket away.
Like Koharu, Shida hadn’t seen Sora coming. She’d told Koharu before they’d set out that, while spiders had six eyes, their sense of sight actually wasn’t all that strong. She could see more than most people, but only by volume, not by magnification. There was no way either of them should have been able to see her coming in time. But somehow, Akira’s second-from-the back left spider-leg to shot out in a reflexive strike.
It was a solid strike, enough to send the Iida girl flying off course, slamming head first into a tree trunk.  She still had the dummy though, which made things complicated.  Already, she was scrambling back to her feet, although quite unsteadily.  Koharu spat a blob of String Shot at her, pinning her to the tree with a mass of sticky strands stronger than steel.
“How did you do that?” Koharu asked, unable to keep the amazement out of her voice.
Shida bowed her head slightly and smiled.  “My leg hairs.  They’re very sensitive to vibrations.  It’s a bit of an instinctive reaction to danger like that.”
“This is excellent tensile strength,” Iida said, as she struggled to break free.  She sounded impressed. Koharu could hear the other girl’s Jetpack engines firing, but for the moment, her String Shot held.  “I would love an opportunity to examine this at a later date! The uses are practically unlimited!”
“Sister!” a voice called out.  It had to be Tensei Iida.  “As much as I am in agreement with you, now is hardly the time for scientific curiosity!”
“It is always the time for curiosity, little brother!”
“I have asked you to stop calling me that!”
“Maybe you two could have this discussion another time?” Another voice asked.   It was Shoji. He sounded very, very tired. Koharu didn’t blame him. The Iidas were very nice, but they could also be exhausting.
Shoji dropped down from between two trees, using his extra arms like spider-legs, free-falling the last few feet to land with a slight thud.  Tensei Iida, meanwhile, dropped down with a series of shot Jetpack bursts to slow his fall.  Both of them were between Koharu and Shida and the dummy.
She shot Shida a quick glance.  “How long can you hold your breath?” she whispered.  Iida and Shoji were playing defense for the moment, watching them.
“That’s a complicated answer with my mixed body. But I can “hold it” long enough. What are you planning?” Koharu remembered, vaguely, that spiders didn’t breathe in the same way as some animals, but she didn’t know how that applied to the spider-girl.
“I can drop a sleeping powder from my wing scales,” Koharu said quickly and quietly.  Shoji was eying them warily, all six of his arms up in a fighting stance, while Tensei Iida attempted to free his sister and the dummy without success.  “If I can cover a wide enough area, I can knock them out.  Iida’s crazy fast and Shoji’s crazy strong.  Probably the best chance we’ve got.”
“Hmm, I could use my legs to lift my body above the powder. Plus I should be able to use my leg hairs to feel the vibrations of where they might move even if I can’t see them,” Shida suggested.
Koharu nodded.  These were all Hero students with months of training that she simply didn’t have.  And many of them had even more than that, coming from Hero families.  Neither side here had a full understanding of what the other could do, so evening out to neutral was the closest they had to an advantage. “Let’s do it.”
She flapped hard, gaining height and propelling herself forward towards the boys, already releasing her Sleep Powder from her wings.   Down below, Tensei Iida looked up and let out a cry of alarm, while Shoji moved towards Shida, his top pair of extra arms stretching out to grab at her.
Shida saw Shoji heading for her, scanning above herself with her uppermost eyes. Staying on the ground was a bad idea as she had no idea how strong Shoji really was. She bent her legs, took a moment to look Shoji in the eyes, and gave the six-armed boy a wink that Koharu would have called flirtatious, before her legs suddenly unbent and sent her flying up into the air. Shooting well up past the smaller trees, Shida extended several of her legs to pierce and grab onto the nearest larger specimen.  Others of her legs lashed out at Shoji.
Shoji dodged out of the way of the initial strike, pushing himself to the side with his lower set of arms.  “Good reflexes,” he said, his voice smooth, like silk. He craned his neck to follow Shida, top arms extending out at her, but his maximum extension wasn’t enough to get him close.
Meanwhile, having recovered from his initial shock, Tensei Iida was rocketing into the air.  He was a major threat, though without the armor and support equipment Koharu had seen him use during the final exam, possibly slightly less of one.   And she had the advantage in maneuverability.
She flapped hard as she flew, releasing her Sleep Powder from her wings until the air was filled with the orange powder.   Iida got the worst of it, flying directly into the cloud of it.  He coughed and sputtered and was out almost immediately.  Which meant that his Jetpack cut out and he started falling like a stone.  Koharu cursed and went into into a dive, catching him in midair by grabbing his wrists. She let loose a cry of pain as her jerked to a stop. It felt like her arms were being torn from their sockets!
“Dammit,” she hissed.  Iida was heavy, muscular and compact.  She could just about manage to carry her own bodyweight when flying, but he was definitely heavier than she was.  She dropped down low and released him, letting him hit the ground.  He’d gotten more than enough powder that he didn’t wake up.
Shoji, meanwhile, was still standing. She’d had to stop spreading her powder to keep Tensei from dropping and he hadn’t gotten nearly as big a dose.  His arms lashed out again, grabbing her wrists!
It had been a gamble that she’d be able to drop Shoji, especially as big as he was and as little powder as she’d been able to release.  She was glad Shida had her back. As soon as she’d seen Koharu drop down to save Iida, the spider-girl had already been making her way down the tree when Shoji extended his arms to grab Koharu.
She watched as Shida did her best to land from an angle that she hoped was in Shoji’s blind spot. Her legs made surprisingly little noise when they were in motion, and she sped toward the big, six-armed boy. When close enough she extended her two front legs and brought them in a scything motion toward the back of Shoji’s knees.
Shoji was a big guy, which made him a pretty big target.  The blow from Shida knocked him down, bringing him to his knees and making him release Koharu.  Looking over his shoulder, he tried to swat at Shida with his Extendo-Arms, but the move was awkward and uncoordinated.  Koharu used the moment to escape, taking to the air again. She swung out with her legs, striking Shoji upside the head.  The blow wasn’t enough to put him down, but it did spin his head around.  He looked back and forth rapidly, now caught between her and Shida.
Shida dodged Shoji’s clumsy blows easily, her eyes and leg hairs giving her incredibly reaction time to his attack. She used her four back legs as a brace as she used them to hold herself in an almost standing position. She launched her remaining arms at Shoji, each attempting to strike at the arm joints of his extended arms.
When it came to extra-appendages, Shoji was definitely unarmed by comparison to Shida.  Even as he’d been able to turn to face her, her spider-legs struck home, nailing him in each of his Extendo-Arms.  The silver-haired boy let out a cry of pain as his arms retracted, snapping back with a strange, stretching sound that was more than a little nauseating.
He’d done a remarkable job of staying upright, but between the pain from Shida’s attack, the blow to the head, and the whiff of sleep powder he’d gotten earlier finally making its way through his system, Shoji went down, slowly sliding to his knees and then to the ground.
They’d done it!  Three hero students, and they’d managed to beat all of them!  She’d even managed to take out two!  Of course, Shida was also a Hero student, so that evened the playing field a little, but still!
“Let’s get the dummy,” Koharu said.  It should still be where they left it, next to Sora Iida.  She quickly glanced in that direction.  The other girl was asleep.  She must have gotten enough Sleep Powder too. Koharu stopped, her antennae moving rapidly.  There was something stirring up a lot of air.
Anything Shida might have said was cut off as something swooped down and slammed into her.  Rough, clawed feet grabbed her shoulders and she felt herself being carried into the air.  It had to be Hizashi Koumori, the bat-like member of Class 1-B.
“Sorry, Kocho,” he said.  “Totally most heinous to do the sneak attack, I know, but we gotta win this one!”
Just before Koumori had grabbed her, Koharu had seen Shida briefly give herself a smile of triumph. That had abruptly ended when Koumori struck. Koharu could see Shida move on instinct to try and help, but she stopped, as though remembering what Koharu had told her. They needed to get the dummy. Shida cursed quietly before heading over to Sora to grab it. With any luck she’d be able to secure it and get back quick enough to help.
But Koharu couldn’t count on that.  She needed to do whatever she could to try and free herself.
It was the element of surprise that had let Koumori grab her.  He was bigger and stronger than her, to be sure, but all he had was his feet around her shoulders. Her wings were still free. And he wasn’t rocket-powered like the Iidas.  He was as dependent on muscle power and flapping for flight as she was, which meant his flight was a lot easier to disrupt.  She flared her own wings out, spreading them wide.  It attacked like an immediate drag chute, jerking Koumori back.
“Whoa!” he cried out.  Reflexively, he released his grip on her as he sailed back.  That was all she needed.  For just a moment Koharu let gravity grab hold, then flapped her own wings, diving back toward the ground.
Just as suddenly, however, she was hit by what felt like a solid wall of force that set her bones rattling and seemed to echo through her skull.  Flailing, she started falling again.  It was hard to think clearly, everything was spinning…
Clawed feet grabbed her again, this time grabbing her legs.  “Sorry about the sonar, dudette,” Koumori said.  He did sound genuinely apologetic.  She knew he was pretty mellow guy most of the time, though how mellow tended to change with how awake he was.  “I’ll have you down in a second.”
No!  She had to prove herself!  She couldn’t lose now!  “No,” she said, “I’m sorry… for this!” With his grip on her legs, she flapped her wings just once, giving herself just enough ot a push to swing upward, slamming both of her fists into his snout!  Koumori let out a cry of pain and released her again.  This time, she flapped and kept herself into the air, but hit him with a blast of String-Shot, pinning his arms--and more importantly, his wings--to his sides.  A pang of regret shot through her as he dropped like a stone.  Koumori was even bigger and heavier then Iida. There was no way she could keep him from falling…
Koumori, at least, was awake. He twisted in the air, trying to break free from her String-Shot, but hit the ground hard, letting out a soft moan, his eyes fluttering.  That looked like it had hurt.  Maybe she’d make it up to him back at U.A. with a fruit smoothie from her stash of exotic fruits.
Koharu landed next to him, bending down to make sure he was okay.  Kuomori was still breathing and it didn’t look like he had any major injuries.  Didn’t look like that had felt good, but it looked like he’d be fine.
It wasn’t the first time she’d had to hurt someone.  She’d sparred with friends and fought in the Sports Festival and trained against others here at the camp.
It didn’t mean it felt good.   Maybe Park had been onto something about children fighting like this…
Shida skittered to a stop next to her, the dummy safely in her hands. “That was amazing, Koharu! I came as quickly as I could, but it turns out you didn’t need it.” Skida smiled, but frowned slightly; she must have noticed the disturbed look on Koharu’s face. She frowned, all her eyes narrowing in concern. “Are you okay?” She didn’t specify if what troubled her was physical or mental, but there was something in her voice that suggested this wasn’t the first time she’d seen someone react like this.
Koharu shook her head.   She had plenty of options that didn’t involve hurting people when it came to takedowns.  Maybe she could learn to focus on that.  But she’d have to fight anyway if she followed her dream and became a Hero.  But what did that mean for now?
Maybe those were questions for another day.
“Just thinking about something your friend said,” she told Shida.  “But c’mon.  We can talk about that later.  Let’s get this thing to the next marker.”
These were definitely questions that needed answers.  But for now, she’d faced one of the first major challenges of her Hero training and she’d come out on top.
For now, that was good enough.

Lock Down Fest Masterpost PART I (20-30 March)
1917
feed me just enough that i’ll never need a cage by Cunninglinguist. (E) 7.4k,  Tom Blake/William Schofield. “Come on.” Sco stops walking, runs a hand over the faintest marking on a tree trunk. “It’s just a little farther now.” “I’m coming.” Tom huffs a sigh, yanking his shotgun strap over his shoulder so the barrel lands in his hands. They’ve been on the road for nearly a week now, an unfortunate consequence of their last shelter getting swarmed by an army of dead ones. Though skinning rabbits to eat over hastily made fires and taking turns sleeping against trees, spending the days and nights consumed with fear, and jumping each time a stick cracked were hardly desirable circumstances, it certainly wasn’t their longest or harshest stint on the run. They had endured worse, by far, and Tom had no doubt that this particular stretch of time would come to an end when Sco said it would. He knows the way, he always knows the way. Plus, Tom wouldn’t want to spend this time with anyone else in the entire world.
If The World Was Ending by RisingShadows. (not rated) 3.7k, Tom Blake/William Schofield.  When a dangerous virus begins spreading across the country William Schofield and Tom Blake quickly find themselves the last two standing of the team working in their lab.

In the multitude of inane celebrity posts telling the mass people to stay home, he finds a lovely, recent photography of Thea. Someone from their College took it. The lighting perfectly captured the dried tear tracks down her unmoving face. Kevin disregards the emotional caption and instead checks the date. 18 March, the night he-  (The night he thought he had a hallucination.)
Quarantine and exy by Fornavn.  FANART. (G) 116 words, Andrew/Neil.  The monsters is stuck at home while coved-19 is terrorizing the world. They are bored.
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES
Alone and in a Circumstance by middlemarch. (T) 700 words, Gilbert Blythe/Anne Shirley, Marilla Cuthbert & Anne Shirley, Diana Barry & Anne Shirley. Anne had a key, so she let herself in, quiet as a mouse, arms laden with bags from the market. Her sophomore class's papers on A Tale of Two Cities were poking out almost jauntily from the quilted bag Diana got her for her birthday.

BOKU NO HERO ACADEMIA
Tell me it won’t always be this hard by Graendal. (T) 4.3k, Midoriya Izuku/Todoroki Shouto. He’d met Midoriya a few months ago during a field trip to the library. The kids had adored him, of course, even the ones who were usually shy about participating in new activities. Midoriya had a way of projecting a sense of all-encompassing safety and comfort with just his smile.Shouto had adored him too, maybe, even back then. A silly crush that had only grown during every subsequent field trip — which is truly absurd, considering the vast majority of their interactions at the time consisted of occasional eye contact while singing children’s songs. But now that they’ve spent hours talking almost every day for the past few weeks… calling it a silly crush might be an understatement. The idea that he’s actually been able to help Midoriya through this is inordinately pleasing. If there’s a silver lining to this at all — for him personally, at least — it’s that he’d seen Midoriya’s post requesting a virtual board game buddy. And that Midoriya is a patient enough person to teach Shouto how to play everything from scratch. He’d actually seemed excited at the opportunity.Maybe the opportunity for any sort of ongoing social interaction is worthy of excitement. These are strange times.

He interrupts whatever rant Patrick had prepared that starts with 'you idiot' by tucking his frozen nose into Patrick's neck and sucking the warm air coming from Patrick's skin into greedy lungs, and grins even wider when Patrick yelps, offended as he always is by a breach of his personal space.

Beautiful Versions of Brokenness pt. 2
Summary: Marinette is different. There was no denying it, but none would have guessed that the true reason was soul deep
Continuation of Prompt: If you're into Black Butler, maybe something with that and Miraculous ladybug? Or Black Butler with Demon Bim? I just think you'd do a good job with the Black Butler characters.
Part 1
____________________________________________
Chat Noir reluctantly left so that Ladybug and Sebastian, shortly after, promised to meet up on the next patrol night so that they could properly discuss their unlikely reunion.
Instead of going home, Marinette leads them to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Parisians are used to seeing their heroine and a black figure at the top of the tower, no one would think twice if she arrived there. Sebastian follows as he always did.
“This isn’t my first life after Ciel then,” She hummed, once she arrived, deciding to deal with the first question on her mind.
“No,” Sebastian agreed, as her timer slowly beeped towards its end, “This is my 37th time meeting you since your contract was created. The 21st time you’ve awoken your Phantomhive memories.”
Her eyebrows rose, “it’s only been 130 years since Ciel died, how have I been reborn 37 times?”
The demon all but scoffed, “Really mistress? All these years with beings of heaven and hell toying with your life and you still believe we are playing by earthly rules?”
Marinette just glared, “You’re telling me Hell lacks linear time then? When I die, my soul just flies to any time period it pleases and becomes whichever child it can find?”
“Precisely,” Sebastian smirks, “There have only been a few rules your soul seems to follow, your eyes remain virtually unchanged, still the strikingly blue and purple hues they have been since our contract was sealed, your hair an inky black and your memories return within a year of the age you took your earldom, thirteen, or not at all. Other than that this is the eighteenth time you’ve taken a female form, fifth where you’ve been of mixed races, tenth of being Asian descent, you’ve been of African descent six times, middle eastern eight, Native American three times. You’ve been of peasantry or slavery six times, on three different continents. Though being enslaved has triggered your memories flawlessly every time and allowed for you to rise in the ranks of society with grace. Sixteen times you’ve been of noble birth in multiple different royal families across the globe. It’s been an adventure each time
“What about Lizzie?” She finally asked,” She never sold her soul, and yet Chat Noir is clearly my fiancé.”
Sebastian frowned, “To be quite honest, she’s never appeared before, or at the very least never awoken. Human souls are not supposed to be reincarnated so quickly, even by heaven’s terms we should not have run into Miss Elizabeth before the 30th century and I’ve never heard of the average reincarnation remembering their memories as vividly as Chat Noir did.”
“Who would know?”
The grimace was fleeting on the demon’s face but Marinette knew what he was getting at.
“The Grim Reapers,” She groaned, “Grell hanging around anywhere?”
“What makes you so certain that pest is still working off their debt?” Sebastian countered
Marinette glared, “Because I’ve seen a shockingly familiar red figure watching the Akuma battles before, but only the ones that might have high casualty counts if we had lost. Plus you’re always aggravated whenever I came back from those types of battles and she was the only one that I know that gets under your skin that badly. If she wasn’t so… open about her desires I would have loved to see her around more.”
The demon sighed, “Observant as always my lady. Grell Sutcliff, William T. Spears, and Ronald Knox have all been given special assignments to follow your reincarnated soul around as they are used to our unique brand of chaos. They are given time off when your soul is inactive, and this works counts as double time for their repayment… containing the destruction left in your wake.”
Marinette hummed, as her time finally wore out a Tikki appeared next to her.
“Sebastian,” Tikki greeted, cooly, drawing a wicked grin on the young girl’s face.
“Miss. Tikki,” He offered with his polite butler smile, the one Marinette knew meant he wasn’t happy, “A pleasure as always.”
“Oh, you’ve met then?” Marinette laughed with twisted glee “I haven’t seen you look so constipated since we had to do those Phoenix poses!”
She could practically hear the teeth grinding behind his forced smile, “I haven’t a clue what you’re talking about Mistress, I think the reincarnation process has scrambled your mind.”
She hummed, cheeky grin not falling as she passed Tikki her emergency cookie, “Either way, we need to plan. Obviously, we can’t play the butler and Earl roles as we once did so we must figure out new roles that we can play, and create a fake hero identity for you if you plan on continuing to help out during Akuma battles.”
The smirk he gave showed off far too many teeth, but instead of unnerving her, it filled her with a sense of comfort, “Allow me to handle everything, mistress. What kind of demon would I be if I couldn’t manage a simple cover story and superhero outfit.”
________________________________________
Marinette awoke the next day to find it starting off horribly. Not only had she overslept without the ever-present tapping on her balcony door Sebastian normally did whenever she slept through her alarm, but as she was rushing she tore her blue contact, only to find it was the last one she had in stock, her new order not set to arrive until later in the week. She decided to give the demon a pass just this once since he most likely was still coming up with proper identification and dwellings for him to stay at now that she required him to be more than just a bird.
Looking in her closet she paused at her normal outfits, plink blossoms, pink jeans, and ballet flats. It just… felt wrong with her new memories of the Earl rattling around her head. She wasn’t unhappy being a woman in this life, still feeling as comfortable as ever in her own skin, but the overly modern and feminine dress just didn’t sit right with Ciel’s memories so fresh in her mind.
Instead, she pulled out a peter pan collared button-down shirt with the collar and large buttons navy against the cream of the rest of the shirt, a forest green western tie clasped in the front. She also pulled on a pair of straight-legged green pants and a navy blazer adding a tan pair of thick heeled ankle boots.  For her final touch, she deep parted her hair, pinning it over her right eye and pulling it back into a bun securing a cream ribbon in a bow around the base of the bun once she was finished. Satisfied she grabbed her bag and took off at a run, bidding her parents goodbye as she attempted to make it class before the bell rang.
She arrived seconds late and found the room reorganized, seats had been moved and the open seat on her normal side of the room was right up next to Adrien. Well, she had to admit her previous actions around him had been overboard in retrospect, and while he was still cute but with Lizzie back in the picture it seemed almost like cheating on her old fianceé.
“Good morning, Adrian,” She greeted, choosing to stand in front of the desk instead of sitting down yet.
The blonde turned to her and perked up, “Marinette! I’m loving the new look, very Victorian esque”
“Thank you!” She laughed, “I felt like a change, You look great too!”
She could feel the eyebrows around the room go up as she smiled gently at the boy, but it was a good change of pace for him, his usual sneakers, jeans, and T-shirt had been swapped out for shiny dark brown dress shoes, a fitted pair of emerald green pants, with a crisp dark blue shirt tucked in. When he turned she could see a silver lace embroidery cutting a wavy path from his left shoulder to his right hip shimmer. He even wore a simple silver ear cuff to finish off the look.
“I picked it myself,” He preened under the positive attention, “Father usually is so strict about what I wear in public but he said I did well with this one!”
“Well, I have to agree,” She hummed, “You should experiment more often, I’d love to give you critiques now that we’re desk partners.”
“Girl what?” Alya finally interrupted, “That’s not your seat, you’re sitting in the back now.”
She could stop her smile from falling into a stony blank look as she turned around, “Excuse me? Who made that call?”
“Well,”  Nino piped up with a slight weariness at her look, “She’s got hearing issues so we had to put her upfront, to make it work Ivan sat next to Mylène, Nate sat next to Alix, and she came up with the idea of moving me up here, so I could spend more time with my girlfriend.”
Marinette raised a brow making the majority of the room fidget, “Who exactly is she?”
Before any of them could answer Ms. Bustier opened the door and started her normal classroom announcements, “Good morning, students. I'm sure you've all heard by now, but Lila's home from her trip to Achu and she's back in school with us again.”
The Italian girl all, but bounced into the room to greet everyone, receiving a warm answer back as Marinette’s mouth thinned.
The fox paid her little mind as she pretended to gasp in surprise at the empty seat next to Adrian and started gushing, “Oh, a seat in the front row! You all remembered my hearing issue! You're such sweethearts, all of you!”
Marinette tilted her head, “I didn’t realize you had a hearing issue, Lila.”
Green eyes flashed towards her as she painted on a self-conscious smile, “Oh Yes, I suffer from tinnitus, a constant ringing in my left ear. I've had it ever since the sound of an airplane engine burst my eardrum on the runaway when I was saving Jagged Stone's lost kitten,”
“Really?” Marinette questioned with a raised brow, “Well I am sorry to hear that, but I would like to know why your disability is ranking above my own.”
Lila froze as Bustier paled eyes widening with realization. The room grew silent before Kim slapped the desk, “Oh my god, we forgot Marinette can’t see!”
She laughed, shaking her head, “I’m not blind Kim,”
He waved her off, “You know what I mean.”
Nino groaned, slinking down, “You aren’t even wearing your contacts today!”
“I ripped one this morning,” She sighed in explanation, “My replacements aren’t coming until Wednesday. So I really can’t sit in the back of the room even if I wanted to.”
Alya’s face scrunched, “I’m missing something,”
Marinette stared up at her unblinkingly, “I have a severe vision problem that causes me issues with depth perception and distance, especially if I’m not wearing my contacts. As noted by my doctor I need to be sitting within the first two rows of the classroom, and to have a seat partner is willing to give me notes that I may have missed if my vision acts up. It has been on file since I was six years old.”
“Ivan and I can move to the back,” Mylene offered quickly, “I’m sorry for forgetting Marinette!”
She offered a soft smile, “It really is no issue, as long as it gets sorted.  While I must admit I believe the origin of Lila’s disability is fabricated, I am sympathetic to her for having said disability, but I refuse to not have my accommodations met just for someone else’s to be met.”
“Fabricated!” Lila gasped tears welling in her eyes, “How mean! You don’t like me, do you! Youre trying to make me look bad and have a hard time due to my disability!”
The ice that entered Marinette’s eye before she turned to the Italian girl sent a shiver down the class's spine, causing Chloe to shrink back and Adrian to sit up stick straight. Marinette felt an odd calm fall over her as the Phantomhive came out to play.
“You claim that you received hearing damage from being too close to an airplane because you ran onto an active runway to save Jagged Stone’s kitten from a jet preparing to take off,” Marinette repeated slowly, “ Not only does Jagged Stone despise cats, but he’s despised them since he was a child after one attacked and killed his parakeet, Juniper. This is an easy fact to look up as he’s mentioned it several times in multiple interviews. The pet he currently owns and has owned for almost twenty years now, is Fang, a freshwater crocodile that Jagged hatched himself. No one is stupid enough to forget the animal they heroically saved from a vehicle that’s accelerating an average of 32 meters per second squared, wasn’t even a mammal when I know that Fang weighs almost 200kg.”
Lila tried to break in but Marinette just straightened her back, and crossed her leg at the knee before continuing, “Furthermore, no airport in this day and age would allow for a teenage girl to make it to the runways where a plane was taking off without being tackled by security, nor do I believe that your mother, a diplomat, would be moronic enough to allow you to be placed in that much danger. If it did happen there would no doubt be multiple stories run by the media about it, internationally so since Jagged Stone is such a big name and you are the daughter of a diplomat, this would not be the first we would be hearing it.”
Marinette grimaced as she moved onto the next point, not even paying mind to the sputtering Lila was doing, “Based on these facts I’m going to assume the claims that he wrote a personal song for you that have been bouncing around are also false as if they’re not it does not paint a good picture that a famous man in his forties is writing and dedicating songs for you, a young teen fan. If these accusations were true, I'd be forced to believe that Jagged Stone is a hebephile or at the very least grooming you.”
Marinette simply crossed her arms as the room grew deathly silent, “Lastly, nothing suggests that sitting closer to the front of the room helps tinnitus, as the persistent ringing would not change and make little difference in a room this small. Most students with tinnitus require the student being given the option to move to a quieter location if the condition is triggered during class, groups the student is working with being given the option to move to a different area in case group work gets too loud during group activities and being placed near a low-level sound, such a small fan, computer, a heating element, or an open window, as complete silence can irritate the issue. I did enough research when helping Aurora fight for proper accommodations made in her own classroom on the subject to know that much. Or as by the way you are dressed and the fact you claim to have spent the last few months traveling the world, your family clearly has money so buying one of the many options of hearing aid out that that has been developed to assist and almost eliminate tinnitus would be overly easy. They sell them for around 270€, fairly cheap for accommodation products, and if your family truly took you on trips across the globe then you can’t convince me they don’t love you enough to shell out a few hundred euros to make your life easier. So tell me again why I’m making a big deal about making sure my own disability is taken care of?”
Lila sputtered, before bursting into tears, “I was too embarrassed to tell you the real reason! I didn’t want you guys to think less of me for taking a break with Prince Ali to go see a concert, I didn’t mean to get so close to the amps but… the hearing loss is so new I’m still adjusting”
Marinette glared at her, “Save the tears. Lies are pathetic tools to use and earn you no lasting loyalty, and to accuse someone of being ableist for questioning the origin of your disability, not even the disability itself is vile. Not a single person in this room would have been upset at you if you told the truth instead of tried to force the issue of fake heroics.”
She sniffled, “I’m sorry Marinette, I didn’t mean to make accusations about you or your character. I’m still on edge from the whole situation…”
Marinette let her glare drop and gave a cool, “It’s forgiven this time, now can we please figure out the seating situation?”
“Well,” the teacher stepped in, “Since Adrian agreed to be Lila’s tutor to help her catch up-”
“Actually, Miss Bustier,” Adrian raised his hand sheepishly, “I was going to bring it up with you later in private, but I really don’t think I’d be a good option to tutor Lila given how full and sporadic my schedule is already, I really would hate for her to fall enough further behind.”
“Oh crap,” Alix swore, “We didn’t even think of that when Lila suggested you!”
Adrian just gave a slight shrug, eyes not looking up from his desk, “It’s okay, I do want to help out the class as much as possible, I feel bad never being able to help out with anything after school.”
“Don’t sweat it,” Kim brushed off, “We get your dad is really on you about everything, we’ll just have to find stuff you can do in class instead!”
“Maybe,” Mylene squirmed a little in her seat as everyone turned to face her, “I mean just a suggestion… but maybe Adrian could be Marinette’s seat partner and help her take notes. You rarely miss actual class time for your activities and this way you’re helping out without committing to any extra time that your dad might not let you come for.”
Bustier clapped, a blinding smile on her face, completely missing how Lila’s face had twisted into an angry mask, “Excellent idea! Let’s all find new seats again, Marinette and Adrian stick together in the first two rows, Lila why don’t you sit on the left side of the classroom by the windows to see if that helps your tinnitus for now. I’ll call your mother in for a proper evaluation over the next few days and we’ll find a proper course to deal with your disability. If someone would like to volunteer to be Lila’s primary tutor please take the seat next to her. Everyone else please fill in!”
Slowly the room began shifting once again. Adrien and Marinette simply switched seats to allow her to better see the room as Alya, Nino, Chloe, Sabrina, Rose, Juleka, and Nathaniel stayed in their same seats. Ivan and Mylene did move to the back row together as Max broke away from Kim to sit in the second row next to where Lila ended up and Alix slid across the aisle to take his old spot.
Alya was still looking at Marinette as if she had three heads, “Girl, what on earth was that? You’re like sunshine personified, but you just tore Lila apart like she was tissue paper.”
Nino huffed a slight laugh, “Keep forgetting you’ve only been in the class for a year, babe. You’ve never seen a Marinette takedown before.”
Marinette smiled, “Do not lie and do not do anything that might have permanent consequences. If they can not follow those two simple objectives in my presence then I will gladly set them straight. Lila not only lied but accused me of being a bigot, I will not tolerate slander.”
“Well I think it was badass,” Adrian commented, causing her to smirk wickedly.
“Thank you. It’s always nice to know my skills are appreciated.”
“Oh do you need any notes from the last few days,” Adrian asked suddenly, sliding his notebook between them as the lesson started.
She gazed down idly, “Not that I can think of but thank-”
Marinette had to keep her eyes from bulging as her words faded off, because in the middle of the page, squished between two facts about the Roman empire stood a simple sentence in perfect English.
I didn’t think I would see you until tonight, Ciel.
“How on earth were we this blind,” Marinette mumbled in English, earning a laugh from his once betrothed.
“Excuse me?”
The pairs heads snap towards the door as a worryingly familiar voice sounds through the room.
There in the doorway was a tall teen with shaggy raven hair as he sheepishly held out a paper towards the teacher, “Are you, Miss. Bustier? There seemed to be a mix up with my transfer papers. Mr. Damocles told me just to head down and you should have all of my forms by tomorrow, but he didn’t want to prevent me from starting today as planned.”
“Oh I hadn’t realized I was getting a new student today,” She apologized, taking the paper and skimming it briefly before turning to the room, “Class it looks like we’re getting another new face today! I want you all to welcome him with open arms! This is-”
He was shorter, a little lankier and with a rounder face then they typically saw him, looking every bit the fourteen year old he was in no doubt playing, but there was no doubt who it was.
“Sebastian,” The demon introduced, mirth dancing in those burgundy depths as he grinned up at the reincarnated duo, “Sebastian Michaelis. I look forward to joining your class.”

Maria Bochkareva and the Women’s battalion of death
Maria Bochkareva (1889-1920) was a Russian soldier who fought during World War I and lead an all-female unit, the Women’s battalion of death. Maria and her soldiers were far from the only women to fight during World War I. In 1915, the London Graphic revealed, for instance, that about 400 Russian women served as soldiers, especially in Siberian regiments. 50 of these disguised themselves as men and were found to be women after being wounded or killed.
Maria Bochkareva was born to a peasant family. Her father was a violent alcoholic. She left school early to work and got married at fifteen with an abusive man. She worked as a construction foreman, on a steamship and as a baker. After her husband was drafted in the army, Maria entered a civil agreement with another man who turned to be just as violent as her first husband.
While he was at the hospital, struck by a fever, Maria escaped by cutting her hair and dressing in his clothes. She then decided to enlist in the Tsar’s army in 1914 as Russia entered with war against Germany. She wrote in her memoirs: “My heart yearned to be there, in the boiling cauldron of war, to be baptized in its fire and scorched in its lava”.
Her demand was, however, rejected. She directly petitioned the Tsar and was allowed to enlist as a regular. Being accepted by the other soldiers was difficult and she faced sexual harassment. She told about her first night in Tomsk that: “All night long my nerves were taunt and my fists busy (...) I continued to rain blows till the bell rang at five o’clock”. She nonetheless stated that she was afterward “found to be a comrade and not a woman by the men”.
Maria, known under the nickname “Yashka”(a diminutive of her last partner’s name, Yakov), would soon show her courage:
“I found myself confronted by a German, who far towered above me. There was not an instant to lose. Life or death hung in the balance. I rushed at the German before he had time to move and ran him through the stomach with the bayonet”.
She volunteered for scouting missions, rescued fifty wounded soldiers on the field, was wounded and returned to the front as a corporal in command of eleven men. She ultimately became a senior noncommissioned officer responsible for provisioning a platoon of seventy men. She was awarded the Order of St. George, fourth degree. For rescuing the wounded and capturing German sentries while incarcerated by the Germans during a Russian counteroffensive she was recommended for the Order of St. George, second and first degree, but, as she noted: “being a woman...received only a medal of the 3rd degree”.
In 1917, the army was totally demoralized by the war, with the threat of increasing desertions and mutinies. In Russia the February Revolution had ended the monarchy and brought the Provisional Government to power. Maria thought she had the solution for improving the moral of the troops: she asked the government to form an all-female battalion. This unit would shame the men into action and make them consequently more involved in the war effort.
2000 women volunteered. Maria was however a very strict instructor: her recruits had their head shaved and she didn’t tolerate any behavior she considered as frivolous. Thus, only 300 women remained in the end. The members wore a special insignia on their sleeves: red and black chevrons and skull-and-crossbones emblems. The volunteers’ backgrounds were extremely diverse: some were from wealthy families, others were clerks, dressmakers, factory workers or peasants. Some already served during the war in medical or auxiliary positions while at least ten fought previously with all-male units. Thirty of these women had already been decorated for valor in the field.

The women’s motivations for enlisting were extremely diverse. According to American journalist Bessie Beatty, some of them believed that the “honor and even the existence of Russia were at stake and nothing but great human sacrifice could save her”. Others because “anything was better than the dreary drudgery and the dreary waiting of life as they live it”. A fifteen-year-old Cossack girl, who managed to enlist though all volunteers were supposed to be at least eighteen, said that her whole family died in battle: “What else is left for me?”. Eighteen years old Maria Gulobyova gave the following reason:
“I had no sensation except to rid my country of an enemy. There was no sentimentality. We were trying to kill them and they were trying to kill us -that is all. Any Russian girl or American girl in the same position would have the same feeling.”
Some of them were disillusioned when they learned that the battalion’s goal was to embarrass the men. They also complained about the chauvinism they faced: “we expected to be treated as heroes, but we were always treated with scorn”. Other female soldiers didn’t not necessarily have a good opinion of the battalion. Flora Sandes, a British woman serving in Serbia, said: “I would like very much to see it, but I don’t think I’d like to be part of it”.
The battalion was finally supposed to take part in an offensive against a German position. However, the order for the attack didn’t come. The Russian soldiers were unsure about what to do. Several hours passed. Maria and her soldiers decided that they would go alone. Male soldiers joined the assault, but others refused to take part in the attack. Some of them were afterward found drinking the store of alcohol left by the enemy.
The women and a few men took the first and second line of the German trenches and held off six German counterattacks on their position. They captured two machine-guns and a number of Germans, including two officers. One of them was so humiliated by having been taken prisoner by women that he threatened to commit suicide. The London Exchange published the following information about the women’s action:
“A peasant girl related that she found herself right next to a German, ran him through with her bayonet and at the same time shot him and took his helmet for a memento. . . . Another girl related that before they went over the top they were all very much excited and scared. But when the order to charge came she forgot everything and leaped over the top with the mob of screaming and bellowing girls. All excitement had virtually disappeared when the time came for shooting. This despite the fact that bombs were bursting all around. The first dead man that she saw made her pause for a moment but she just had to go on and therefore passed right over his dead body, a thing to which she soon became quite accustomed. Another girl related how her battalion had surrounded a company of German soldiers who threw away their weapons, held up their hands and shouted in amazement, 'Good Lord! Women!'”.
Without reinforcements, they were forced to return to their position and suffered heavy casualties during the retreat. Regimental and divisional commanders were impressed by the women’s performance, but this wasn’t sufficient. The initiative didn’t manage to raise the troops’ morale. The war was just too unpopular. The male soldiers grew furthermore increasingly hostile to women’s presence and their prowar stance. Other all-female units were created during summer 1917, but the female battalions were finally disbanded.
When the Bolsheviks took the power after the October Revolution , Maria found herself in danger and labeled as anti-revolutionary. She escaped execution and traveled to the United States and England. She also met the leader of the Suffragette movement, Emmeline Pankhurst and dictated her memoirs.
When she returned to Russia, the Red Army was fighting the Anti-Bolsheviks factions. Maria wanted to join the fight against the Bolsheviks, but her demand was refused. After the defeat of the Anti-Bolsheviks, she was imprisoned by the secret police. She was executed after four months of interrogation for being an “enemy of the people”.
