On November 10, 1918, the Western Union Cable Office in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, received a top-secret coded message from Europe (that would be sent to Ottawa and Washington, D.C.) that said on November 11, 1918, all fighting would cease on land, sea and in the air.

I come from a family of singers, and while I didn’t inherit the Actually Good at Singing gene, I used to love singing anyway. I’ve always been an alto, and my deeper voice was always a point of pride for me! I was into musical theatre, and when I would actually be cast, I’d find as many loopholes as possible to sing lower than I was supposed to. I wanted to be a Broadway actress. But I wanted to play women’s and men’s roles. I wanted to be known as the woman who could be a man just as easily and just as flawlessly.
But after a, uh, particular incident at a singing contest, I realized just how much I actually sucked and swore off singing for the rest of my life; I’ve been slowly allowing myself to sing again through my twenties, but never where others can hear.
While my speaking voice hasn’t dropped as much since starting T, my singing voice has. I’ve been testing my low range by singing the opening of The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg and seeing how many notes I can actually hit, and I’ve been kinda dissatisfied, because I still can’t hit the bottom notes. But as of late I’ve found myself cranking off into musical theatre pieces whenever I’m alone and cleaning or driving or what have you, and the more I go through, the more I realize my voice is, at present, so much closer to the voice I always wanted growing up.
While cleaning the windows at work, I cranked off on the most hilariously passionately rendition of Who I’d Be, which has always been one of my favorites, but one I could never sing; it went too low, and raising the key took it too high outside of my range. Now? I can hit every last note. Not well, of course, but I never once struggled in the lows. Now I can’t stop singing it, because I’ve wanted to sing it since I was thirteen and now I finally can and I’m needlessly emotional over it.
I dunno. It’s just nice. This is the first time I’ve felt happy about my voice since I was in middle school, and it’s empowering in an odd sorta way.

Somewhere near Sunset and Vine, Hollywood
[Mise en scene: Top Cat and clowder are in that general part of Hollywood posing for the tourists' selfies and autographs and otherwise in walkabout when the scene is as follows--] CHESSIE THE AUTOGRAPH HOUND, probably a little on the puerile side of things: HI! Can I have your-- TOP CAT, interrupting: I'm afraid you have the wrong show, ma'am; either your wires must have crossed or you were given incorrect directions! My name happens to be Top Cat, and we happen to be rather respectable types, so would you please take your autograph-seeking exercises elsewhere? BENNY THE BALL, rather excited at TC's tirate with the Nehru jacket and all: That's certainly putting it to her, TC! TOP CAT: Good point, Benny, and besides-- [Whereupon Officer Dibble comes onto the scene and TC calls the thirdborough's attention to Chessie the Autograph Hound and her nuisance-type antics, especially in seeking out the Cattanooga Cats for autograph purposes. Later, after Chessie is led away for psychiatric observation--] TOP CAT, to the entire of the clowder: Just a reminder, boys, that one cannot be too careful, nor too particular, in who you seek autographs or selfies from, to begin with! CHOO-CHOO, being pragmatic about it: Setting aside yourself, TC, for the obvious reasons, is it any wonder many of the tourists smelling us out find me especially popular, especially so with the feminine crowd? BRAIN, trying not to sense frustration: And even when we go to Catalina, it just seems that about the only times I manage to feel at my best is when I'm able to make some serious love! TOP CAT, rejoindering: Brain, I have to admit you're taking things a little too ahead of yourself, but nonetheless, try not to get as much in future! FANCY-FANCY, more or less the "Voice of Experience" type: And just let me say, from personal experience, that you can't always get what you want--unless you manage to put in some effort, even if it means being suspicious of her intentions! TOP CAT, with a tinge of sarcasm evident: Thank you, Fancy-Fancy!

i've been thinking all day about how funny it would be if we learned that switzerland is actually not part of the federation. it has like strong ties, and there aren't technically any borders anymore, and sure, it's super easy for a citizen to get federation citizenship through an administrative process, but the swiss government continues insisting they are neutral!

#OTD in 1669 – Molly Malone is purportedly christened in Dublin.
The song ‘Molly Malone’, also known as ‘Cockles and Mussels’ tells the story of an attractive fishmonger in Dublin named Molly Malone. The song tells how she died young of a fever and how her ghost still haunts the streets of Dublin where she plied her trade. The song is extremely popular in Ireland and elsewhere and is the unofficial anthem of Dublin. Almost every Irish artist has recorded…

Between Nintendo being the first company to not reject my job application with a standardized email without any follow up on my motivation and resume at all and the new Zelda really seeming to arrive a day early I must have pleased the videogame gods somehow

Whoops I’m late! It’s a little less than 2 weeks to July’s [VS] Art Party, which will be on July 1st (preemptive happy Canada Day to those who also live here!), so as is now customary, it’s time to poll for our party location! We’ll continue to stick to racial cities for now, but I’ll dig up a different spot in whichever city wins than where we’ve been situated before! And so, it’s time to ask:
I'll still let this poll run for a week, which means the actual announcement post for the party won't be posted a week before, but I'll make sure it gets out as soon as this poll closes next Tuesday!
PS if you have no idea what I'm talking about with this, check out this tag on my blog for explanations/announcements, and the #VSArtParty tag for examples of what people have been making!

Yellowknife, NWT (No. 15)
The Post Office building for Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, serving the X1A postal codes, is located at the southwest corner of 49th Street and Franklin (50th) Avenue. It is a two-storey concrete building in a late modernist style dating to the mid-20th century. In 2006 it was designated a City of Yellowknife Heritage Site in recognition of its long standing role as a social centrepiece for the downtown community; it has been administratively listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places as a result. "This is where you went to find everybody" in the 1960s, one city councillor recalled when the building received its heritage plaque in 2010.
It was the first federal government building constructed in what is now referred to as Yellowknife's New Town. The city had begun during the 1930s as a gold mining community on a peninsula and islands in the bay named for it on Great Slave Lake. When the boom resumed after World War II, it quickly outgrew the space available there, and New Town began to develop to the south on higher ground. The post office was completed in 1956 as the centralized, downtown location for mail services for Canada Post; it also housed the territorial courts until 1978. Both functions made it an important civic presence that helped establish New Town.

The Springfield pictures on my phone are coming in handy as I go through the Lincoln book.
Wax figures of Lincoln's Cabinet from the Lincoln Museum
Banner from the 1860 Election in the historic Springfield Capitol building.
Sign from Lincoln's Law Office.
Historic Springfield Capitol building
#history is awesome#presidential talk#part of the reason i'm pausing the podcast to dig further into lincoln#is because i intended to look deeper into lincoln after this trip and never did#it's fun going back through the pictures with more context#though it would have been even more fun to have that context when i was there#the main reason i included that banner picture is because i got a nice surprise#when i saw hannibal hamlin's name and realized 'oh now i know that guy!'#it's fun to learn about history of a place you've actually been to#nice to be able picture lincoln's house and the state legislature whenever they mention them#though it is a struggle to roll back my imagination and remember the city doesn't look like the one i saw#pretty sure there was no museum across the street from lincoln's house#lincoln didn't have car traffic outside his office#lincoln probably did not go to the krispy kreme#which makes me very sad because that was one of the most profound culinary experiences of my life#(new item for the time travel bucket list: take lincoln to the krispy kreme)#there are other cool and useful pictures i wanted to show but unfortunately i had to avoid the ones with people in them#there's a great shot of the front of lincoln's office but my sister is standing right in front of it#and most of the useful lincoln's house photos have other tourists there#suddenly i'm worried that i wasn't supposed to take pictures inside the lincoln museum#if any angry museum workers see this i'm sorry#i only had an hour which meant we were sprinting through that place and i needed to be able to look closer later

where do you stay in Tokyo and which area do you recommend to stay for tourist?
I'm separating that cause I imagine you don't stay anywhere budget friendly
We own a place in Akasaka, so I've never stayed anywhere else and therefore don't have a really good benchmark which area is better as a tourist. I will say I do think Akasaka is great. It's not where any of the famous tourist areas are, but that kinda doesn't matter considering Tokyo's amazing public transport. I like it here cause there's a commercial area right outside our doorstep that has EVERYTHING we'll ever need, but none of the extreme number of tourist/locals in Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ginza have etc. It's an expat haven as well so lots of local cafes and restaurants are english speaking friendly.
I think Japan being as public transport friendly as it is, you don't have to prioritize being in the commercial district to survive. Just make sure you're near a metro station and the place is idk family friendly?
