Alright so I was going to make something of my two ocs Aino and Kari but dead ass, I don’t have motivation to draw them fully so I’m gonna ramble about how old they are and the timeline they were born:

Kari is the youngest being 10, he was born June 6th 504, Hes more quiet and reserved but he’s smart, not crazy smart but talented in things related in history. He has a few history related books but that’s about it, he’s also a bit of a cry baby but that’s okay.

Aino is older than Kari, I’m not sure what year to make her been born as I don’t know when falin left to the magical academy [date wise] I know it was a year after laios left, I’d think that Aino was most likely born unexpectedly at the end of the year like December-February, maybe even a cryptic pregnancy with her. Meaning she was born in just the ending of 501 or 502

I’d imagine that after having Aino Ms touden was really sick, but they decided to have a kid 3 years later so Aino wouldn’t be lonely since from falin’s letters laios and Falin were close. Then that’s how Kari was born, [again this is based on my own life etc, not exactly accurate but very loosely based.] Aino I can imagine took more interest in hunting [based on me taking a interest to something my father loved aka video games]

Mr touden I could imagine was more open to teaching Aino how to hunt and different myths such as nussa and anowtid [? Idk how to spell its name] but I also wanna add onto ‘Aino and Kari don’t know about laios and Falin’, it’s not that they don’t know who they are, they’re aware they are their older siblings. As to laios and Falin knowing about Kari and Aino, probably not. Idk if their parents send falin letters back, if they do then maybe aware of their existence but it’s a mutual disinterest in each other.

Aino would go explore the world and stuff, learning different techniques of hunting in different cultures but she wants to wait until she’s older or when her parents have offical passed. And she doesn’t want to leave Kari alone, Aino is the classic mean older sibling trope with Kari. Often teases him for being a cry baby, weak etc. but she does love him, and makes sure he knows that with giving him rocks she finds

Again I know people will find these two cringe but i don’t care, Aino and Kari don’t infringe on the main story and aren’t canon. I say sibling ocs are alright unless they mess up the main story, if they’re clearly just a side character then it’s okay. 😋👍

Party of Five

Summary: Laios and a lone tall man defeat a monster together, and the party offer to share a meal with him. Characters: Wash(Oc), Laios Touden, Marcille Donato, Chilchuck Tims, Senshi Word Count: 1183

“How much further are we going to walk today?” Marcille whined, leaning against her staff.

The deeper they got into the dungeon, the longer the days seemed, the more monsters they faced and ate. Today felt especially long after a chance encounter with a hoard of scorpions, followed by a swarm of treasure insects.

Senshi looked back at her, “There’s an opening we can camp at close.”

Close meant another twenty minute walk. By the time Senshi mentioned they were almost there, everyone was hungry and tired of this day. Even Laios wasn’t as parky as he usually was.

Turning the corner, they were startled to see a battle in progress. An armored tallman jumped back, getting out of the way of the snake side of a basilisk, followed by a swing of his blade. The basilisk hissed, snapping at him again.

The shock disappeared fast as Laios pulled his own sword out, joining the battle. The other tallman saw him out of the corner of his eyes, changing his battle plans. Laios went right so the man went left. Without words, the two knew what the other was doing, and when there was an opening, they attacked both sides, ending the monster.

With the battle over, the party got a better look at the newcomer. He was short for a male tallman and very rough looking. Long blonde hair, pulled back out of his face, but his face was still covered with a beard. His tired blue eyes were framed in glasses. The man looked at them.

“Are you okay?” Laios is the first to speak.

The man hesitated before nodding. “Yes,, thank you. These guys are hard to face alone,” he replied sheathed his sword.

The fellow tall man chuckled, “Yeah, well, where’s your team? They must be worried about you right now.”

The silence that followed spoke volumes.

“Whaaaat? You came this far alone?!” Marcille exclaimed in surprise. “What are you doing this far alone?!”

The man rubbed the back of his neck, unable to look at her. “I was, um, well, trying to go deeper. Last I heard from my siblings, they were somewhere in the dungeon, and um, I’m looking for them.”

“Alone?! Are you crazy?!”

“Woah, Marcille, calm down,” the half foot turned to face her, despite sharing her opinion on the matter. “I think you’re scaring him.”

A clap from the dwarf caught their attention. They turned to look at the man as he walked towards the dead monster. “You helped kill this basilisk, care to join us for a meal?”

The tallman opened and closed his mother, not finding the right words. He turned to the others while pointing at the monster with a raised eyebrow; their nods confirmed his thoughts. He took a moment to process before his thoughts were cut off by the growl of his stomach.

“You know what? I have nothing to lose.”

The tall man helped with cooking by chopping a few vegetables the party had leftover while Senshi got the water ready for soup. Laiios was busy preparing the meat, and Marcille and Chilchuck worked on setting up their camp. It was quiet as they worked before the newcomer suddenly jolted up, causing all eyes on him.

“Oh! I never introduced myself,” he realized. “I’m Wash.”

“Marcille,” the elf said. “I can’t believe a child like you would come in here without anyone.”

“I’m 36-”

“Give it a break, Marcille,” the half foot said. “We all agree he’s dumb for that.” He turned to the tallman. “I’m Chilchuck.”

“Senshi, it means seeker in dwarvish,” the dwarf replied, taking the vegetables to add them to the broth.

The tall man turned to the other tallman, who was staring at him. The two stared at each other for a while; Wash glanced around at the others who were also confused by the silence. Until finally,

“I know you.”

“Huh?”

“Oh! I’m Laios, do you remember me?!” His demeanor changed to excitement.

The room fell to silence minus the sound of Senshi’s cooking; the small of the basilisk soup filled their nostrils and made their mouths water. Their stomachs also began to growl. Wash started to feel awkward with the eyes of Laios on him before it finally clicked.

“Oh wait, you were stationed under me,” Wash said. “Right?”

“Stationed under you?” Chilchuck questioned.

The older tall man smiled a little, eyes softening. “Back in the army. I was a general, up until recently. Laios was a soldier under me. Surprised that you recognized me, kid.”

“So am I.” “Yeah” Marcile and Chilchuck whisper to each other.

Laios laughed. “Almost didn’t! You…” his voice trailed off, but Wash knew what he was going to say. His appearance wasn’t as well kept as he once was.

“Dinner’s ready!” Senshi cut into their conversation.

“Have you really not eaten in almost two days?” Marcile asked with wide eyes, staring at the tall man who was on his third bowl of soup.

“Yup.”

“You need to eat properly in a dungeon! Bad things happen when you go around hungry!” Senshi exclaimed; the look on the others’ faces showed they knew this well.

“Yeah, how have you survived this long on your own?” Chilchuck stared in shock.

Wash rubbed the back of his neck, placing the bowl on the ground. “Well, I guess I just did. When I got to the Island, my mind was and still is just on the dungeon and finding my siblings; it took forever to just get to the dungeon.”

“Are you sure your siblings are here?” Laios asked.

The older one nodded. “Allison sent me a letter, telling me she found Leo, and that they were hiding in a lower level. I,, I have to find them; it’s hard to explain.”

Laid rubbed his chin in thought as he nodded. Wash went back to the soup; it felt like no matter how much he ate, he was still hungry. Curse his stupid body and oversized stomach.

“Come with us.”

“Huh?/What?” The elf and half foot turned to look at Laios with wide eyes as Wash looked up at him mid bite.

“Think about it, we’re going deeper, he needs to go deeper, and he’ll be an extra fighter,” Laios explained his reasoning.

Wash placed the spoon down in his bowl. “And why are you going deeper?”

The group fell silent for a few seconds before Laios spoke again, “Do you remember Fali? My sister I used to talk about? She was eaten by a dragon; we need to get to her before she’s digested.”

The older man stirred the soup, thinking about it. “,, I suppose this would benefit us all, but only if everyone agrees, I’ll tag along. If anyone doesn’t want me to, I won’t.”

Laios looked at the rest of the team with begging eyes. Any disagreement fell on deaf ears, and before they knew it, the party of four became a party of five.

i don't have the patience to sit through listening to LO's ice-cold dungeon meshi takes- i've seen more than enough on her blog- but is she saying that the toudens aren't an example of the positive sibling relationships she wants to see in anime? because holy shit, laios and falin's love for each other is one of the driving forces of the whole story. they're so incredibly loving and devoted to each other that i have to wonder what DOES she want? ...ironically, i have a suspicion that the reason she doesn't like how the toudens are written is because they still have a healthy distance between each other, as in they have things they care about outside of their sibling, and don't want to spend their entire lives glued at the hip. in other words, because there are no incestuous undertones. hey, somebody tell me if i'm right? i think i might be right

indeed, her entire issue is that apparently she doesn't believe that the laois guy doesn't really care about his sister. that's it. mind you... i believe that if that same character was a woman and they were two sisters, suddenly she'd say that they're one of the most loving relationships either. garanteed that in one month she'd be making OC with their exact same design and have the same codepdency incest as all others.

but since one of them is a stinky, stinky, stinky cis man, then i guess him having a life outside of his sister is just too big of a crime to be forgiven.

Milden Jacs, 37, He/Him

Gnome Mage (and future novelist) who hails from a humble fishing town in Kahka Brud

I don’t want to write something narrative here man so I’m rambling anyway so Milden is pretty much a classic baby left on the doorstep scenario. He doesn’t know much about being a Gnome and culturally considers himself a half foot, often having an easier time connecting with them due to his general familiarity with the half foot way of existing. This however, is complicated by his life span. Milden’s parents are dead and his siblings aren’t too far from death either. In fact he’s already a great uncle and he’s not even the age of maturity yet! Milden has a hard time comprehending his life span pretty much, still not completely grasping the fact that time moves slower for him in comparison to others. Poor boy is in for a ride…

Anyway on a lighter note, little guy came to the island for writing inspiration! He wants something to be remembered by and to him writing a good book is exactly that. He’s just not got any ideas… so adventuring it is! Him and his honestly kind of shitty magic skills against The Horrors (tm). I think if he met the Touden Party he’d try and study Laios like a lab rat and beg hands and knees to try monster food (dude LOVES the idea of new experiences. It’s a good distraction from time’s ever present and ever moving arrow!)

what sort of characters do you find yourself enjoying in media? and do you take inspiration for your ocs, or do you like go a different route?

Oh this is such a good question for right now because I’m like currently in development stage of a new character for an upcoming D&D campaign!

With characters in media, is honestly a question that is broad as anything but I do tend to have recurring character tones I enjoy.

I’ve before discussed my love of “older sibling (typically brothers) who are portrayed as comedic characters but have extreme angst about their dead sister”. Which is by far the most specific tone I have here.

Example of this type of character: Skipper Redbeard (Mianite), Alice Yabusame (Your Turn to Die), Laios Touden (Dungeon Meshi), Jean Pierre Polnareff (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

Obviously, this could just be that I enjoy protective older siblings, but I weirdly think the comedy brings a certain aspect to it – idk.

Most of the rest of the characters I’m drawn to are on a kinda spectrum.

Of the top of my head:

Mean women. This can range from “Not really mean at all but still the meanest in the room” (Reko Yabusame, YTTD) to “This character isn’t all that mean but is kind of a bitch” (Emily, Until Dawn) to “Oh my god, she’s actually insane” (Ruraka Ando, Danganronpa 3 Anime). I think this is the catorgory where Capsize fits, probably between the levels of Reko and Emily (but tbh, Emily's level varies depending on how you treat her).

For guys, the above tends to be anime villain boys. Read Nagito Komaeda (Danganronpa 2), Shuntaro Chishiya (Alice in Borderlands), Karma Akabane (Assassination Classroom).

Chishiya, I want to particularly point out the manga portrayal as Six of Diamonds made me just fall in love with this character. I have a lot of problems with how the live actions handles some of the games and characters (like I would need the rest of the manga first but I might eventually compare the games in the series to the manga just to kinda highlight the differences and the missing games).

Then there’s the opposite end of just people trying their damn best – Kaede Akamatsu (Danganronpa V3), Seong Gi-hun (Squid Game).

Oh and then my autistic beans who I relate to Gin Ibushi (YTTD), River (To The Moon), and Himiko Yumeno (Danganronpa V3 – not canon like the others, but I think she has the vibes).

For if I use characters I like to inspire my OCs – yes 100%.

Most of my OCs are developed for TTRPGs, so I want a character I’m comfortable roleplaying and have concrete ideas of at least some of their opinions. Hence, a lot of my OCs start with another character as a base.

This isn’t always true. Medli, who is kinda my main girl, was developed over a lot of months and since she didn’t need to be real to play in a couple weeks, she developed in a way not based on another character.

However, most of my characters, I will be playing without warning so I build them off pre-existing characters, so I have a voice and a couple of opinions there.

To discuss process, because again I’m building a character right now so I can present this quite easily. Development begins typically by figuring out what’s the character vibe and working out how I wanna move forward.

The character I’m currently working on (gonna call them Suzume and Hibiki right now because those are my working names), are the first time I’ve build a D&D character in a way so, that is working out a vibe and if that vibe can fit into a class.

Suzume is being written for a distinctly evil campaign. DM (my wonderful friend Atlas who also created half the OCs in the OC verse) requested evil characters, but evil characters without any real power. So we could make a mob boss, but they would need to have been deposed if that makes sense.

So I started workshopping. My original idea was to make Jinx from Arcane, high energy, explosions, complex relationship with sister. But to be fully honestly, I could not build the character I wanted in D&D (I miss my beloved pathfinder 😭😭)

Then, back to the drawing board, I was like “hmm, I’ve always played the magic classes, I think I want to try a martial class for once.” And started looking at rogue subclasses. Then I started looking at Phantom Rogues and I started to develop an idea of a character that briefly appears very innocent then they open their mouth and they are so very clearly a murder who wants to kill people.

This was originally inspired by V3’s Kiyo – but I then begun discussing the character with Atlas who presented the idea of her being similar to Yuta from Jujutsu Kaisen 0 with a dead friend as their ghost companion and hence Suzume and Hibiki rather than just one character.

Now I had the basic vibes, I started putting together my character board and I will develop her out further from these inspirations (yes, it's a screenshot, it's saved as a TIF so I can keep adding to it, and screenshoting is quicker than saving another image):

Over time, my OCs tend to become their own things. Katherine and Capsize really aren’t similar anymore, neither are Libitina Puch and Emily Kaldwin. But Sigourney, who is still quite a new OC and overall not been used as much, is still very Reko coded.

The other way to develop OCs tends to be when Atlas and I discuss OC aus. I will sometimes throw characters in as a “Fuck it, they can fit” kinda thing and develop from there.

Taurus was originally just a genderbent version of Libra made to balance genders for our Danganronpa AU, then he became such a fucking bastard that he became a separate character altogether. (Fun fact: we have three OC danganronpa games planned, Taurus is the ONLY character who appears in all three that never makes it to the halfway point AND Logan – the man who exists basically just to be a rat bastard – is in that AU).

Rupert Delaney was put into our YTTD au basically to be Mishima’ed but then… no one got Mishima’ed and Rupert ended up developing a kinda darker edge in the lengths he’ll go to protect Katherine even if he’s still a good aligned character.

Then there’s Lance De La’Fleur. A character invaded purely for the Danganronpa AU as the Ultimate Pro Wrestler. Arguably, he hasn’t developed past that but when I say I love Lance and try to put him into every AU, I mean I love Lance and try to put him into every AU (and am so very often told no)

What I love about ryoko kui is that she clearly love her characters so much. Those are her ocs. Her blorbos <3 the people in her head that she spontaneously sketch when she's bored. There's this energy in these sketches that you don't feel for most official arts.

Also the touden siblings are so fine
