Still brain rotting about the au where Finley and Junior survive the nukes and end up on quesadilla island (tentatively calling it baby totems au)

2 bits of word building/background

First, totems can form bonds with each other, and form/break surface level bonds very easily. If they’re physically close they can pass words through the bond. If it’s a deep bond, they can feel emotions and track direction and distance towards each other, though distance makes these weaker.

Second (inspired by a detail from @cobythinks fic Fools Gold and Silver Tongues, that totems need to eat gold to be healthy) Totems need to regularly eat gold to function. They’re made of gold after all, it has to come from somewhere. They need to eat gold to heal, children need to eat a lot more gold than adults because they’re growing.

What this means:

(Part 1) Finley and Junior end up at quesadilla island because they were following their bond with foolish. Finley and Junior were only able to feel it over such a distance because they were together. Foolish assumes it’s just a phantom bond, like how you can get phantom pain from missing limbs.

It’s just that he wants his children to be alive, anf they’re not, they’re gone forever. It’s just that he’s longing to form a totem bond with Leo, with anyone because he’s surrounded by friends and family but he’s still so alone. It’s just that he sees Finley and Junior in every interaction between the eggs and he just wishes that was enough, that the eggs, that Leo would fill this gapping whole in his heart. So he ignores this fake bond that only reminds be of what he can’t have.

(Part 2) By the time Finley and Junior reach quesadilla island they’re…not doing great. They’ve been swimming for several months, and there was a steep learning curve for catching fish. While they were able to get better at hunting they haven’t had an access to gold. So by the time Finley and Junior arrive at quesadilla island they’ve gone from gold to silver to a dull gray color, and aren’t immediately recognizable as totems

I always avoided Pokémon Ultra Sun (and Moon) because I love Lusamine's villainy in the original Pokémon Sun and Moon and didn't want to see it diluted. But I heard there was a lot of good added content, so I went through with a Fairy team: Primarina, Ribombee, Whimsicott, Alolan Ninetales, Mawile, and returning champion Mimikyu.

Reference art of my sona, Niko Spirata + one of many monster forms (Spirit Elemental/Cat monster). As I am genderfluid, they have three references to reflect it (Feminine, Nonbinary/Both?, Masculine)!

The monster form is Undertale AU-related more than anything else (In the context of multiverse crossover happenings, however, this is something that becomes a permanence with Niko later in the timeline).

Regardless of form, they've got spirit-related abilities (hence the form in the second piece), which means they can see things unseen to the naked eye (with their third eye), call upon totems/spirit animals for support in various situations and look to various deities when meditating (for advice more than anything - it's comparable to a DnD session when a character calls upon their deity of choice). It's a more exaggerated, "magical" version of what some people can do with spiritual practices (combined with the more modern interpretation of a... witch, maybe?).
