Imagine sliding your fingers underneath Diluc’s glove, the sensation of soft leather and your nails raking against his palm. The frown he’ll give you as he first tries to pull away, then relents, curious about what you wish to do.

Imagine your surprise when you finally manage to peel it off: they are not the hands of a rich businessman. Instead, they are the hands of a swordsman: the skin is rough and dotted with callouses.

When you turn it over, the knuckles are bruised, and when you run your thumb over the broken skin, he inhales sharply.

You apologize, contrite, and ask him if it hurts.

It takes several seconds before he answers, “No.”

It sounds like a lie, and you look at his face to look for any signs of pain. Instead, you find that he is looking at the way you cradle his hand in both yours. He is transfixed, his eyes are like burning coals.

“Where,” you ask. “Did you get these? I don’t remember any fights breaking out in the tavern lately.”

This time, Diluc doesn’t answer.

You can feel it then, it changes the air around you: the suffocating silence of a secret not shared.

Finally, you speak.

“It’s okay,” you say. “You don’t have to tell me.”

And you raise his hand to your lips to plant a kiss. RIght there, over the bruises.

And his expression changes. You’d seen it several times before, on adventurers who stumble into Mondstadt, after months spent in the wilderness: a hunger that borders on starvation.

Finally, Diluc pulls himself from your grasp, and he uses his newfound freedom to hold you to him, the warmth of his body chasing the chill away.

“Thank you,” he says. “Maybe someday soon. I’ll tell you.”

my initial knee jerk reaction to lucanis/spite saying "family, enemies, contracts" was bad because it felt like an oversimplification but actually thinking on it i really love that lucanis forces himself into this box to make things make sense in his life. family is unconditional, enemies are to be killed, but contracts is so. interesting... man who promises mila that he will find her father because he does not fail contracts. the same man who tells effe that he will kill her slaver because he needs to turn her from a poor young woman that he sympathises with, into someone he can make a deal with. it's not kindness, it's not weakness, he's just fulfilling a contract, and crows don't break contracts. if he kills a bunch of racist blood mages during that process, then he's not breaking the rules, just bending them. a very convenient excuse to be a good man while still being a crow and assassin. and of course when spite is forced into him, he gets out of it with something familiar! by making another deal! something he could work with, something he HAS to work with, because being just an abomination is unthinkable. if he can work himself out of this problem like he's done with every other contract in his life, in his mind maybe there's some tiny chance that this becomes another job that he can claw his life back from.
