Michael Faraday achieved electromagnetic induction here at the Ri for the first time #OnThisDay in 1831
His work revolutionised our understanding of electricity and led to the development of electric generators, motors, inductors & transformers ⚡️
Tumblr media
Electromagnetic induction is the production of an electromotive force (voltage) across an electrical conductor in a changing magnetic field.

You can find his electromagnetic induction ring and notes within our Museum and archival collection!

If beautifully scrawling handwriting ain’t your thing, read the transcription of Faraday’s notes here.

Garden Update...
New post: Garden Update @BBCSpringwatch #wildlifegardening #birds #Insects
I thought a garden update might be in order as I haven’t posted for a while.
In late April the blue tits laid their eggs and now we have little fluff ball juveniles in the garden. 🙂
Here’s an adult on our feeding station pole.

Don’t study because you need to. Study because knowledge is power. Study because they can never take it away from you. Study because you want to know more. Study because it enhances you. Study because it grows you.

Sparrowhawk
New blog: Sparrowhawk #birding #NaturePhotography #spring
Tumblr media
Last week we had a sparrowhawk in the garden; a regular visitor and a supreme ambush predator.
The sparrowhawk uses the trees at the bottom of the garden to spot and prey on either house sparrows, starlings and other smaller birds/mammals. Now that the trees are in full leaf it finds it easier to get its prey from the gardens around where I live.
This time of year they look for more food as it’s…

Spring
New blog: Spring #wildlfegardening #gardening #wildlife
Tumblr media
Spring is here at last and over the last couple of weeks here in the UK we have had some wonderful weather (well 2 weeks ago that is, I’m a bit late in posting 🙂 ).
The garden has been in bloom with the first flowers coming through (although we do have winter growing flowers), the leaves on our big trees making a welcome appearance and getting seeds planted in the greenhouse for the veggie plot. 🙂

Snowmageddon...
New blog: Snowmageddon #snow #naturephotography #wildlife
Tumblr media
Over the last week we’ve had rather a lot of snow here in the UK (I love snow by the way). 😀
The weather system that caused this was mainly from Siberia and brought very cold winds and lots of snow, although I have to say that we were lucky here in the South-east UK and didn’t get the worst of it.
It is really important that in the freezing cold temperatures to put as much food and water out for…

The Big Garden Birdwatch 2018
New blog: #TheBigGardenBirdwatch #wildlife #nature #birding #fun
At the end of January each year is the annual Big Garden Birdwatch survey which is organized by the RSPB (sorry this is only available in the UK). It is the biggest wildlife participation event of its kind and if you’ve read this blog before you will know I enjoy it and take part too. 🙂

The future of prosthetics is incredibly stylish
It used to be that prosthetic limbs and style had little to do with one another. Prosthetic limbs have typically had as much style as orthopedic shoes, sheathed in beige fabric to cover the metal and plastic parts within. They lacked originality, they lacked flair and they certainly didn’t reflect the wearer’s personality. Now, that couldn’t further from the truth.

This is by far the hardest chapter to read in all of The Dresden Files.
WARNING!!! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
When Harry confronts Mab after The Incident, Harry doesn’t seem to realise that Mab indeed cared for her daughter Maeve. But Mab could indeed see the care Harry had for Molly. When Molly was given the Winter Lady Mantle, I could literally see Harry’s face just collapse.

Midair crystallization.
It’s not magic, it’s acoustic levitation. The two metal probes emit and reflect sound waves that trap this liquid droplet in midair. Franziska Emmerling uses the effect to study crystallization without interference from container walls, which can influence the rate of crystal formation (Cryst. Growth Des. 2014, DOI: 10.1021/cg501287v). “In a typical experiment, we use an under saturated solution of a certain compound,” she says. “During the experiment, solvent evaporates from the droplet and the saturation level increases leading to nucleation and then crystallization.” In this photo, however, they’re just levitating blue ink to demonstrate the apparatus.
Emmerling (@FranEmmerling) submitted this photo as part of the #RealTimeChem photo contest on Twitter. The two runners-up in the Reactions category were Henry Powell-Davies (@hpowelldavies) with his balloon reaction and the Townsend lab at Vanderbilt (@Townsend_Lab) with a well-composed flask shot.
