SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT (1984)
Tumblr media
Y’all this was a lot of fun and I didn’t even know it existed until about a day ago. Basically a kid gets his Christmas all jacked up by some jacked up adults and then one day he finally pops off and it is pretty glorious. I’m not sure that all the killing blows were deadly, or that deadly right away but it was still a good movie exaggeration or no.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
(Trigger Warning Sexual Harassment/Abuse, Child Abuse, PTSD)
Tumblr media
On Christmas Eve ‘lil Bill and his family are driving to see their mentally impaired grandfather who just happens to tell Billy a terrifying tale about how Santa will get him, then that night a guy in a Santa suit kills his mom, dad, and tries to get him as well. That kind of thing would give anyone a complex and now the kid is an orphan who gets PTSD during Christmas which is just a whole lot for him. Like, Billy decks the orphanage’s Santa which was fucking awesome but also not good, “What the hell is wrong with that kid” a dude in a Santa suit EXACTLY like the one you are wearing murdered his family four (4) years ago so the kid is a little testy. But back to the First Santa Killer (because there is a “First” one), I was actually shocked that the First Santa Killer was so concerned with the little kid but left the crying baby alone. I was glad he wasn’t a baby killer, that would have made for a much darker film, but it didn’t make a lot of sense to me because this dude was a pretty bad guy (I’m talking naughty list bad).
Tumblr media
Billy and his brother go to an orphanage where the Mother Superior is very hard on him and strict about what is naughty and who should be punished (basically anyone who has premarital sex) which really sticks with him. Time passes, he gets a job at a toy shop and then comes around his favorite time of year and he himself plays the role of the dreaded Santa Claus. The whole thing is driving him to the edge though and upon hearing that Christmas Eve is the night Santa “does his thing” Billy promptly topples over the edge of all that is holy and becomes a festive machine of punishment. He punishes his coworker for assaulting his other coworker which is very boss of him but then he keeps going and just kills everyone who has ever been naughty and maybe that isn’t very fair of him. He is even very hard on a child and only gave her a used boxcutter for being good (lame!).
Tumblr media
Sledders are losing their heads in the park as our Second Santa Killer makes his way back to the orphanage he calls home to attack the Naughty Mother Superior. They attempt to warn the orphanage with the police but this ends up getting a priest dressed as Santa shot dead which was pretty unfortunate for him (he was deaf so he couldn’t hear the police commands). Billy gets to the orphanage and the kids let him in because he is fucking Santa and why wouldn’t they let in Santa? They were literally told he would be the special guest and spent the day writing letters to him, it is not shocking at all they would see Santa and let him in the building, how are we surprised by this? So Billy is inside and is about to axe the Naughty out of the Mother Superior when he gets shot by a different police officer brought in by the lesser nun who tried really hard all movie to take care of him but was never really allowed. He dies looking at all the kids and being really creepy and haunting about it, and then his little brother starts with the “naughty” thing. Wack.

CRINGE NAMES. NOW. 👹
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FINE! FINE!!! So everyone had some name tryouts at first, and everyone has different themes behind their name! I think about this an embarrassing amount.
Sera is pretty on the nose with hers. Vincent had a lot of ancient Roman name themes. Nathaniel? tons of Latin. Sonia has a more American name, and Amon has both ancient and modern Egyptian names to his- er... name.
The name 'Seraphina' was my first choice. You can give her several nicknames! But I felt like it was super cringy- I still cringe here and there when I say that my MC has such a mouthful of a name! However, she quickly grew into it; it was the only name that fit her.
Other runners up were: Daya, Jena, Lark, Pheobe, Raven, Tori, Diane, Robyn, Vanessa, Karla, and Corrine. You can tell I wanted a specific vibe here. Her last name used to be Guerrero!
Herrera is a Hispanic surname. It literally means iron forge, but sounds so cute. And her middle name, Nephele, means cloud in Greek. You can tell she is my oldest oc goddamn four years now
Vincent has always been Vincent AFAIK, but his lab name had changed quite a bit, to the point that I decided to leave him nameless in the lab. A name implies an identity after all. I still sometimes wonder if I'll stick to the name, since the way he canonically gets it is kind of weak narrative-wise.
His beta lab names included: Livius, Lucius, Odysseus, Aetius, Nero, and Dante. Kind of teetering on cringe, even though I liked Dante... Oh well. It's for the best. My subconscious would've played the nastiest trick had I not found out:
Tumblr media
Now, Vincentius remains with his first and only name, its latin root, Vincere, means to conquer and prevail. He's the winner! He won! why is no one clapping...?
We move on! Nathaniel!! Ahaha I liked brainstorming Nate a lot...But his name was pretty straightforward. I just picked something off the top of my head and it stuck! kind of how it happens in Canon, lol. As Nathaniel grew his personality and character profile past "Hi! I exist to be your boyfriend!" Things quickly took form for our dear Wilson. I chose Wilson as a surname because of our og here:
Tumblr media
...I just think he's neat. The tattoo on his shoulder was going to be Inter Umbra, but I soon found that Noctis Umbra fit far better. Darkness in a night filled world. Toxie Noxie. Plus these names make a poem!
Nathaniel Wilson: God has given a son of will,
Noctis Umbra: A shadow in the night.
Sonia’s names were pretty straightforward. I wanted something playful and energetic! but also quite American. She's a carefree ginger with her heart on her shoulder... Even though it's doubtful this is her real name past just being a stage name. It might be something stupid. Like Marjorie.
Oof. Let's stick with Sonia. I wasn't thinking about any name meanings here, but it is kind of funnily ironic that her name means wisdom! ahah!

Amon wasn't going to be Arab at first; I was leaning more towards Egyptian mythology rather than modern, Islamic Egypt. I found it a lot funner to meld Momo more in that direction. even though he is raised a lot more multiculturally and areligious past his teen years in canon. (He was working in the mafia since he was fourteen. He has become the definition of Haram.)
So, instead of making a character based off of Amon Ra, or Ammit, the crocodilian deity in ancient Egyptian mythology, Momo kind of evolved past just his character abilities! In canon, Amon uses this name as a nickname/street alias. Adra finds it cool! so she call him that too.. His real, birth name is Arham Hassan Ahmed. Not that he will use it much in the story.
Some literal Google search translations to his name- Arham, coming from the arabic word "rahma", which means merciful or compassionate. Hassan, meaning handsome. And Ahmed, from "al-hamd" meaning praiseworthy. Or so I have read!
Lastly, Eric. My mom came up with it, and my brother immediately went "gasp- RICKY." and it stuck. My brother also came up with Schraf as a surname. It doesn't mean anything, but it's cool innit? (This is also how he named Karl Strohl.)

Cid and Nero lost the recount
Mercutio and Benvolio have exited stage left
Pate and Creighton have been felled
Daphne and Velma have jeeped their last jinkie

Thancred and Urianger have been votekicked
Elias and Peter have been redacted
Tom Nook and Red have filed for bankruptcy
Cuttlefish and Octavio have been splatted
Keefe and Kelvin are beyond saving
Todd and Neil have joined the poets of their society or whatever, idk what those books are about
Nada and Polo await the next iteration
Ted and Archie have placed worst in breed
Tory [sic] and Abed have been expelled
Fitz and the Fool were almost disqualified anyway because they were arguably canonical but one-sided, so just as well
And lastly and perhaps most shockingly, Jessie and James are blasting off again
Our brackets are now looking like this:

Just as a reminder, I really want people to be making INFORMED votes. Based on the amount of people last Round who said they thought Team Rocket were siblings, I'm worried that's not happening.
I would go about personally including the gist of these characters in the poll posts themselves, but I am very much lacking in information on some of these properties, and i would hate to manufacture bias in my attempt to eliminate it. Again, I encourage you to not simply see your blorbos and click on them, but to understand who they're up against. Look through the notes for people propagandizing for them, or perhaps skim a wiki page.
Relatedly, I'm going to be installing a "show results" button this round, for people who are responsible enough to not make uninformed choices but also can't be arsed to inform themselves.
Polls should start going up automatically tomorrow.

October Wrap-Up
Books Read: 6
I'm changing up my way of doing the wrap ups and not doing the template anymore haha.
Dead Silence: I really liked this! It was fun to read a ghost ship and a space horror. Space is such a good place to have a horror setting! It was delicious!
The Tower of Nero: The end of the trials of Apollo series! I will miss the series, I loved Apollo he was fun to follow and this was a good end to the series! I wished the Python fight was longer, but overall really good!
The Scum Villian's Self-Saving System Vol. 4: Mxtx has such a good writing style and I loved this series! I liked the TGCF series a bit more but SVSSS was more of a comedy/Parody and had a great time with it!
The Witch and His Crow: This is my first Ben Alderson book! I hear he is a pretty prolific Gay author who writes gay romance. i followed him on Insta and saw he was offering arcs up! It was fun time, and could tell it was revving up for a sequel as well! It was face paced and read super fast!
City of Stone and Silence: I was happy to follow Isoka and Tori! I loved to see Tori's side of events that happened when she and Isoka were still in Kahnsoka! I really liked Tori's and Garo's relationship that developed and then the end of the book made me question his motivations. I'm interested to see what happens in the final book.
The First Adventure: This was my first Tamora Pierce book! I know she is an older fantasy writer. I was bored for most of it but the ending really took the cake! I am interested in reading book 2 to see if it keeps being interesting!
DNFs: 2
Malibu Rising: I just didn't want to read about celebrities being assholes to each other. There was just a lot of cheating and lying and I just didn't care. Jenkins Reed may just not be the content for me.
The Astonishing Color of After: This was not a bad book, in fact I loved the prose. I understood the grief element the author was doing but Leigh was just getting angry at everyone and it was oft putting to me and I didn't want to read it anymore. If you can handle a character that does that totally go for this book.

Uncool Two 50, the master post
This is UncoolTwo50, a further list of fifty great songs released between 1977 and 1999.
It's based on the Uncool 50, which I did a couple of years ago, telling the story of my life through songs. This time, I'm listing great songs. Ones that have stood the test of time, and still sound great today.
Other lists in the same vein: Let's Do It 1954-76, and Fear Of Mu21C 2000-23.
Other people are contributing their lists, and project sponsor Arron will come up with an overall top 250. But this is my list.
DOUZE 1) "Since yesterday" - Strawberry Switchblade ELF 2) "Constant craving" - k d lang ELF 3) "Torn" - Natalie Imbruglia ELF 4) "Im nin'alu" - Ofra Haza ELF 5) "Buffalo stance" - Neneh Cherry 6) "Sign of the times" - The Belle Stars 7) "...Baby one more time" - Britney Spears 8) "Like a prayer" - Madonna 9) "Take a chance on me" - ABBA 10) "Careful" - Horse 11) "Cloudbusting" - Kate Bush 12) "Independent love song" - Scarlet 13) "You get what you give" - New Radicals 14) "You oughta know" - Alanis Morissette 15) "Independence day" - Martina McBride 16) "Winter" - Tori Amos 17) "You're moving out today" - Carole Bayer Sager 18) "What's up?" - 4 Non Blondes 19) "Barcelona" - Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Cabaillé 20) "Kids in America" - Kim Wilde 21) "Désenchantée" - Mylène Farmer 22) "Steal my sunshine" - Len 23) "Doo-wop (that thing)" - Lauryn Hill 24) "Listen to your heart" - Roxette 25) "Step by step" - Whitney Houston 26) "Last Christmas" - Wham! 27) "Duel" - Propaganda 28) "Closer to fine" - Indigo Girls 29) "Piano in the dark" - Brenda Russell 30) "Echo Beach" - Martha & the Muffins 31) "Footsteps following me" - Frances Nero 32) "Crying" - Roy Orbison & k d lang 33) "Birdhouse in your soul" - They Might Be Giants 34) "Ba-ba-bankrobbery" - EAV 35) "Indestructible" - Four Tops and Smokey Robinson 36) "Lean on me" - Red Box 37) "Indian" - Eg and Alice 38) "The night" - Intastella 39) "Stay (I missed you)" - Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories 40) "America blue" - His Latest Flame 41) "Wuthering Heights" - Kate Bush 42) "I'd do anything for love (but I won't do that)" - Meat Loaf 43) "Louise" - Human League 44) "Better days" - Gun 45) "Leave a light on" - Belinda Carlisle 46) "Prince Charming" - Adam and the Ants 47) "Shout" - Tears For Fears 48) "Fairytale of New York" - The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl 49) "Coisich a' ruin" - Capercaillie 50) "Never gonna give you up" - Rick Astley
Median entry is from the very start of 1989, which is the joint most common year with 1984 (five singles each). I've blanked 1979 and 1983; no slight on either year, but the songs didn't quite click for me. About half the singles made a year-end top 100.
49 different acts are represented, Kate Bush gets two entries, and k d lang is a soloist and a duetter. Four songs are completely in a language other than English, and one is partly in another tongue.
There is, again, a clause to stop too many white men; I think there are 10 songs solely by white men on the list.
In retrospect, I missed "Cannonball" by The Breeders, and chose the wrong Pet Shop Boys track as "Always on my mind" is less than "Left to my own devices". Ho hum.
Through the write-ups, I make reference to the "longlist", about 500 songs which I weeded down to a "shortlist" of 104 by assessing the quality of the song, performance, emotional impact from the song, and whether I want to hear it again straight after listening. Radio airplay in 2024, and sales when the record was released, these helped to weed out picks unlikely to get any other attention. Bonus marks for having a woman / someone non-white / being not in English.
I presented it as a ranked list; as with Let's Do It, I was precise down to position 18; beneath that it's too much hassle to make exact rankings so go for something that felt right.
And, for my records as much as anything, the next few groups.
51 Sixpence None the Richer “Kiss me” 52 The Waterboys “The whole of the moon” 53 Black “Wonderful life” 54 A-ha “Take on me”
55-61 Alisha’s Attic “Alisha rules the world” Boy Meets Girl “Waiting for a star to fall” Debbie Gibson “Electric youth” Dream Academy “Life in a northern town” Duran Duran “The reflex” Fools’ Garden “Lemon tree” Heavy D and the Boyz “Now that we’ve found love”
62-69 An Emotional Fish “Celebrate” Don Henley “The boys of summer” Goodbye Mr Mackenzie “The rattler” Princess “Say I’m your number 1” Runrig “Hearthammer” The Big Dish “Miss America” The Goo Goo Dolls “Iris” Wah! “The story of the blues”
The rest of the longlist included some that might make the eventual top 250: The Bangles "Hazy shade of winter" (if I'd voted for this, it would have made the overall top 250) ABC "The look of love" Cyndi Lauper "Time after time" Macy Gray "I try" Madonna "Into the groove" Sinéad O'Connor "Nothing compares to you" Soul II Soul "Back to life" TLC "Unpretty" Chesney Hawkes "The one and only" (...er)

Behind The Music
Laura Nyro
She was not only an engaging performing, her songs were covered by everyone from Barbra Streisand to Three Dog Night
Writer and Music Historian John Einarson remembers the great singer & songwriter Laura Nyro on her birthday!
Born on this date, October 18, 1947, Laura Nyro (born Laura Nigro in the Bronx, NY), singer songwriter. She achieved critical acclaim with her own recordings, particularly the albums Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968) and New York Tendaberry (1969), and had commercial success with artists such as Barbra Streisand and The 5th Dimension recording her songs. Her style was a hybrid of Brill Building-style New York pop, jazz, rhythm and blues, show tunes, rock, and soul. Between 1968 and 1970, a number of artists had hits with her songs: The 5th Dimension with "Blowing Away", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", and "Save the Country"; Blood, Sweat & Tears and Peter, Paul and Mary, with "And When I Die"; Three Dog Night and Maynard Ferguson, with "Eli's Comin' "; and Barbra Streisand with "Stoney End", "Time and Love", and "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man)".
Nyro's best-selling single was her recording of Carole King and Gerry Goffin's "Up on the Roof". For a time in the latter 60s her career was managed by a young David Geffen (photo below) who set up a publishing company for Nyro's songs and got her signed to Columbia Records after Nyro auditioned for Clive Davis in her apartment.
In late 1996, Nyro, like her mother before her, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After the diagnosis, Columbia Records prepared a double-disc CD retrospective of material from her years at the label. The company involved Nyro herself, who selected the tracks and approved the final project. She lived to see the release of Stoned Soul Picnic: The Best of Laura Nyro (1997), and was reportedly pleased with the outcome. She died of ovarian cancer in Danbury, Connecticut, on April 8, 1997, at 49.
Nyro's influence on popular musicians has also been acknowledged by such artists as Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Tori Amos, Patti Smith, Kate Bush, Janis Ian, Diamanda Galas, Bette Midler, Rickie Lee Jones, Elton John, Jackson Browne with whom she had a romantic relationship in the late '60s, Alice Cooper, Elvis Costello, Cyndi Lauper, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, Melissa Manchester, Lisa Germano, and Rosanne Cash. Todd Rundgren stated that once he heard her, he "stopped writing songs like The Who and started writing songs like Laura." Cyndi Lauper acknowledged that her rendition of the song "Walk On By", on her Grammy Award-nominated 2003 cover album At Last, was inspired by Nyro. Elton John and Elvis Costello discussed Nyro's influence on both of them during the premiere episode of Costello's interview show Spectacle. When asked by the host if he could name three great performer/songwriters who have largely been ignored, he cited Nyro as one of his choices. Elton John also addressed Nyro's influence on his 1970 song "Burn Down the Mission", from Tumbleweed Connection, in particular. "I idolized her," he concluded. "The soul, the passion, just the out and out audacity of the way her rhythmic and melody changes came was like nothing I've heard before."
A biography of Nyro, Soul Picnic: The Music and Passion of Laura Nyro, written by Michele Kort, was published in 2002 by Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin's Press.
One of the finest singer/songwriters ever.

“Heat not a furnace for your foe so hot that it do singe yourself. William Shakespeare
The Guardian newspaper carried this serious but unsurprising headline in reaction to the Tory by-election win In Uxbridge.
“An inconvenient truth: you can’t sell the green revolution to people who cant afford it.” (Guardian: 20/07/23)
The other “inconvenient truth" is that the VERY rich already have plans to avoid the personal ramifications of climate change and have no interest in the green revolution.
The super-rich ‘preppers' planning to save themselves from the apocalypse."  (Guardian: Douglas Rushkoff.04/09/22)
Selfishly, the rich believe they can use their wealth to somehow insulate themselves from the catastrophic consequences of climate change and therefore they have no incentive to implement the green policies needed to save the world. In fact, they need very quickly to make even more money so they can purchase the necessary real estate, technologies and security staff they will need to ensure their personal survival. But even then the super-rich still feel vulnerable. Having spent millions on their steel-lined bunkers - some complete with pool and bowling lanes - they have no way of ensuring their own security guards will not turn against them.
“The billionaires considered using special combination locks on the food supply that only they knew. Or making guards wear disciplinary collars of some kind in return for their survival. Or maybe building robots to serve as guards and workers – if that technology could be developed “in time”. ."  (Guardian: Douglas Rushkoff.04/09/22)
Meanwhile, here in Britain, measures to improve air quality and lower emissions from air polluting vehicles have been weaponised as an election issue. While half of Europe and a great swathe of North America are in the grips of a life-threatening heat wave, our government is veering away from green policies and many within the Labour Party including Keir Starmer, are doing the same.
If the super-rich are taking climate catastrophe so seriously they are holding seminars on how to survive Armageddon, then so should our politicians. Sunak and Starmer seem to be basing their climate strategies on that of Emperor Nero:  fiddling while the world around them burns. The really sad thing is that most of the British public seem happy to sing along with them.

((Visible to anons and muses. The "document" is under the cut because I talked a lot about the characters since I wanted them to feel more fleshed out. Please read to the end for another small note --Mun Ozzie))
Hello Agent. You have been selected to join our new Groups of Interest department. This department deals with everything about the GOIs that exist here in the Tempest reality. If you meet the right requirements you may even join the primary strike forces that deal with active threats to the Foundation and to the world.
You have been assigned to work on the following Group of Interest: The Expressionists.
Attached you'll find everything you need to know. If you have questions don't be afraid to call up our hotline*
Secure. Contain. Protect.
Group of Interest name: The Expressionists
Other aliases: Train Trainblazers, Toxic Traversers
Consists of: Punks, rejects, and former Are We Cool Yet? members
Goal: unknown, as this group is made up of a variety of people with a variety of end goals. So far none of them are in the parameters of world domination.
Size: small, only about twenty known members
Known events: Paris Paint Panic
Date added to GOI list: 6/11/23
Earliest date attributed to them: 3/17/03
Known enemies: Flora Fighters, Chaos Insurgency
Relationship with Foundation: Amicable
Areas frequented: Trainyards, stations, anywhere with walls ready to be graffitied
Key members:
Darnell "Grey" Turner - One of the more prominent members, Darnell is more often than not found spray painting graffiti around train yards. This escaped student of Brunshire Academy is always seen wearing a filtered mas around his mouth, as his carbon dioxide output is instead an aerosol substance akin to spray paint. This constant change leaves him very tired, yet he's able to outrun most people. He seems to be either mentored by or related to elusive artist Banksy, who is also a member of the Expressionists, and perhaps its leader and/or creator as well...
Amritkala "Narangi" Joshi - The one person preventing the group from becoming totally evil. A beacon of kindness, Amritkala has shown kindness in the face of adversity and aggression and helps spread love instead of giving into hate. Her time as a member has strengthened her confidence and encouraged her to be more open about her past and family. One of the groups photos involve her bringing the group to a celebration of Holi. On that note she has the ability to create color pigments from her hands and hair; when these pigments are ingested enough, the individual gains a minor anomaly based around paint.
Lazarus "Acqua-Nero" Caputo - a true punk complete with leather jacket, sunglasses, and a taste in rock; this is how you can easily find Lazarus. A true rebel, Lazarus is the drive of the group, often helping incite actions when they are wronged, and its because of him the Expressionists hate the Insurgency. His anomaly is very odd, as besides the rainbow streaks that come from his switchblade, it keeps changing. One time slashing an opponent causes them to explode, while another time he was able to successfully drain someone of the color red using his switchblade. Despite his tough look he actually prefers pacifism.
Celestino "Azul" Figueroa - A bit dreamy, Celestino is always having his head in the clouds. He is quite passive and always prefers others do the talking while he sits and paints. Despite all this, it seems he is the one behind the incident known as the Paris Paint Panic, where paint bombs exploded over the city, turning those covered into paint monsters. Three of these monsters were contained while the others were terminated and a cover ups tory about an indie horror movie was fabricated. This appears to be a one-time thing, and his responsibility for the event seems unlikely.
Sandra "Green Yellow" Bronars - A former florist, Sandra created a plant capable of inducing creative abilities temporarily with an unfortunate side effect of intense addiction. One day during a fight she was fed some of her own plant and became a victim to its addiction. Despite her constant anger it seems she is genuinely trying to find a way to be cured of it. This anger is also why the Expressionists are enemies with the Flora Fighters, as she outwardly disrespected the leader, Madame Chrysanthemum.
Vadim "Belyy" the Bat - A unique member of the group, as this Russian man bears two anomalies. The first lies in his name, as he is a werebat. He has three forms, that being a human form, werebat form where he stands at a staggering almost fourteen feet , and a full bat form that looks like a Gobi Big Brown Bat, albeit with some whiter fur. His other anomaly has to do with his bite, which has a 98% fatality rate but has a chance to have others become blessed with a rare anomaly relating to paint. He is quite intimidating, and uses that to help him with his leadership role. His animosity towards many has been dampened by some of the aforementioned members, but he won't hesitate to hurt you if he feels threatened. He may also be hiding more powers than we know...
The Benefactor - Not quite a member but crucial that they are discussed. The Benefactor is a sponsor of not just this group but many other GOIs around the world. Following the Paris incident they seemed to appear and sponsor the Expressionists, as if they wanted a repeat of what happened. It is known that they sponsor other groups such as the Neon Nughsticks and the West Virginia Bug Committee. Finding them is a a high priority.
((Hurray you made it to the end! The Expressionists can be asked about, and if you'd like you can even ask the characters minus the Benefactor. Thank you for reading all of this :> ))
