Review: "The Radleys" by Matt Haig
Tumblr media
Published: 2010 Page Count: 384
Just about everyone knows a family like the Radleys. Many of us grew up next door to one. They are a modern family, averagely content, averagely dysfunctional, living in a staid and quiet suburban English town. Peter is an overworked doctor whose wife, Helen, has become increasingly remote and uncommunicative. Rowan, their teenage son, is being bullied at school, and their anemic daughter, Clara, has recently become a vegan. They are typical, that is, save for one devastating exception: Peter and Helen are vampires and have—for seventeen years—been abstaining by choice from a life of chasing blood in the hope that their children could live normal lives.
Date Started: 28 October 2024 Date Finished: 2 November 2024
While vampires in suburbia seems like the setup for a c-tier soap opera or the punchline to a middling funny joke- the concept when executed well is comedic and compelling at the same time.
On top of the worries of being a normal high schooler- like studying for upcoming exams or trying to find out if the girl you have a crush on likes you back- you now have to deal with your uncontrollable thirst for blood?
Matt Haig’s “The Radleys” follows the titular family living an idyllic British middle-class life while hiding the fact that they’re vampires. But when youngest daughter Clara’s bloodthirst causes her to attack a boy from school, the family is thrown into a crisis they’re unsure they can get out of.
This book plays into a lot of tropes found in the average sitcom in suburbia. The parents who maybe aren’t as in love as they should be, the fear of affairs or divorce looming overhead. The moody teenage son who’s hopelessly in love with a girl out of his league. The precocious and cynical younger sister. And who could forget the bad influence uncle who makes a surprise appearance?
While these archetypes are well-known, and frankly over-done, the vampiric twist on them is what makes them interesting.
The twists and revelations within the story are formulaic, but the looming anxiety and anticipation as you know what’s coming next makes the book more interesting than if the reveals came out of left field with no foreshadowing or hints left previously in the story.
As far as vampiric world-building goes, it features both vampires that are born and vampires that are created. These vampires are also less-so immortal, and more-so extremely long lived- which means they’re capable of aging, if at an incredibly slow rate.
And these vampires don’t need blood to live. The Radleys begin the novel as “abstainers”- vampires who subsist on a meat heavy diet rather than the blood of humans.
This book didn’t leave a profound impact on me, and I’m unlikely to re-read it in the future. But it was a fun read and had an interesting take on vampiric lore which I can appreciate.
I recommend this book to anyone who grew up wishing they were a vampire, anyone who DVRs “The Real Housewives,” and anyone who feels their family could benefit from open communication.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Chemical-Free Body Wash
In today's health-conscious world, people are becoming increasingly aware of the products they use on their bodies. One significant aspect of personal care is the choice of body wash. Many conventional body washes on the market today contain a host of chemicals and synthetic ingredients that can be harsh on the skin and potentially harmful to your health. As a result, the demand for chemical-free body washes has been steadily on the rise.
In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the world of chemical-free body washes, helping you understand why they are a better choice for your skin and overall well-being. We will also provide you with tips on how to choose the best chemical free body wash for your specific needs.
Why Go Chemical-Free?
Before delving into the best chemical-free body wash options available, it's essential to understand why making the switch is a wise decision. Traditional body washes often contain a range of chemicals, including parabens, sulfates, artificial fragrances, and preservatives. These ingredients can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and even allergies. Furthermore, some chemicals found in body washes have been linked to more severe health concerns over time, such as hormone disruption and cancer risks.
Chemical-free body washes, on the other hand, use natural and organic ingredients to cleanse and nourish your skin without the harmful side effects of synthetic chemicals. These products are typically free from sulfates, parabens, phthalates, artificial fragrances, and other potentially harmful substances. By choosing chemical-free body wash, you're not only taking better care of your skin but also reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals.
Choosing the Best Chemical-Free Body Wash
Now that you're convinced of the benefits of using chemical-free body wash, let's explore how to select the best one for your needs
Read the Ingredients: Always check the ingredient list before making a purchase. Look for natural and organic ingredients such as aloe vera, coconut oil, shea butter, and essential oils. Avoid products with long lists of unrecognizable chemicals.
Skin Type: Consider your skin type when choosing a body wash. Some products are specially formulated for sensitive skin, while others may be more suitable for dry or oily skin types.
Fragrance: If you prefer scented body wash, opt for products scented with essential oils or natural fragrances. These will provide a pleasant aroma without the use of artificial chemicals.
Allergies and Sensitivities: If you have allergies or sensitivities, it's crucial to choose a body wash that is hypoallergenic and free from common allergens.
Certifications: Look for certifications such as "Certified Organic" or "Cruelty-Free" on the product packaging. These certifications ensure that the product meets certain standards for quality and ethical production.
Customer Reviews: Check customer reviews and ratings to get an idea of how well the product has worked for others with similar skin concerns.
Price: While chemical-free body washes may be slightly more expensive than conventional options, consider it an investment in your skin's health and overall well-being.

Which is the best baby lotion and baby soap for newborns?
Welcoming a newborn into the world is an exciting and life-changing experience. Along with the joy comes the responsibility of taking care of the little one's delicate skin. Choosing the right baby lotion and soap is crucial for maintaining the baby's skin health. With countless brands and types of baby products available in the market, it can be overwhelming for new parents to make a decision. This article aims to provide a comprehensive guide to choosing the best baby lotion and soap for newborns.
Understanding the baby's skin
A. The structure of newborn skin
Newborns have delicate and sensitive skin that is thinner than adult skin. The skin barrier is not fully developed, making it more susceptible to damage and dehydration. The skin contains fewer melanocytes, making it more prone to sunburn and other forms of skin damage. The skin’s pH level is also higher, making it more alkaline than adult skin.
B. Common skin conditions in newborns
Newborns are prone to developing several skin conditions, such as diaper rash, eczema, cradle cap, and baby acne. These conditions can be caused by various factors, including irritation from diapers, clothing, or skincare products, and hormonal changes.
C. Factors to consider when choosing baby products
When selecting baby lotion and soap, parents should consider factors such as the product's ingredients, fragrance, and texture. It is essential to choose products that are free from harsh chemicals, such as parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, that can irritate the baby's skin. Fragrance-free products are also recommended, as they are less likely to cause allergic reactions. The texture of the lotion or soap should be gentle and non-greasy, as it can help to prevent skin irritation.
Best baby lotion for newborns
A. Overview of different types of baby lotions
Several types of baby lotions are available in the market, including water-based, oil-based, and cream-based formulations. Water-based lotions are lightweight and non-greasy, making them ideal for daily use. Oil-based lotions are thicker and more moisturizing, making them suitable for dry skin. Cream-based lotions are the thickest and most moisturizing, making them ideal for extremely dry or sensitive skin.
B. Top-rated baby lotions for newborns

Best baby soap for newborns
A. Overview of different types of baby soaps

Liquid soaps are more convenient to use and often come in pump bottles. Washes are a combination of soap and shampoo that is suitable for bathing the baby's entire body.

Tips for using baby lotion and soap
A. Frequency of use
Newborns do not need to be bathed every day, as this can strip the skin of natural oils and cause dryness. It is recommended to bathe the baby two to three times a week and to use lotion after every bath to help lock in moisture.
B. Proper application techniques
When applying lotion or soap, it is important to use gentle, circular motions and to avoid rubbing or scrubbing the baby's skin. Patting the skin dry with a soft towel can also help to prevent skin irritation.
Precautions to take
When using any product on a newborn's delicate skin, it is important to take precautions to avoid any adverse reactions. Here are some tips to follow:
Always do a patch test before using a new product. Apply a small amount of lotion or soap on a small area of the baby's skin and wait for 24 hours to see if there is any adverse reaction.
Choose fragrance-free products or products with natural fragrances as synthetic fragrances can cause irritation and allergic reactions.
Avoid using products that contain harsh chemicals, such as sulfates, parabens, and phthalates, as these can cause skin irritation and dryness.
Always consult with a paediatrician before using any new product on your baby's skin, especially if your baby has sensitive skin or eczema.
Conclusion:
Choosing the right baby lotion and soap for a newborn can be overwhelming, but it is essential to select safe and gentle products that help to nourish and protect the baby's delicate skin. We have listed some of the top-rated lotions and soaps for newborns, along with tips on how to use them properly. Remember to take precautions and always consult with a pediatrician before using any new product on your baby's skin. With the right products and proper care, your baby's skin can stay soft, healthy, and moisturized.

𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐬 .
Tumblr media
1. what does your muse smell like ?
Klaus leaned fully into the quintessential hippie aesthetic somewhere in his late teens by covering up the scent of weed with incense.  Even sober he still smells mildly of patchouli and, very faintly, cigarette smoke.  He’s a clean freak who loves, loves, loves bubble baths, and takes a bath daily in a variety of wonderfully scented oils, soaps, and salts.
2. what do your muse’s hands feel like ?
Soft and warm. Klaus’s whole body temperature runs warm, a stark contrast to the forces with which he fellowships.  There’s a callus on the bottom of his left palm, from writing and drawing. and his left ring finger is a little warped at center from holding pencils and pens.  Klaus’s touch is also furtive and gentle, even if it’s also frequent and needy.
3. what does your muse usually eat in a day ?
Klaus is a junk food to nutritious food convert (due largely to the company he kept during his stint in the 60s). He isn’t a vegan or vegetarian, but he does aim for gluten and dairy free foods (he’s lactose intolerant), as well as minimally processed and organic foods.  However he can be found eating junk food on special occasions and he still relies heavily on takeout.  Ethnic foods are a staple (Mexican, Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese are his favorites).  He can always be tempted to eat donuts because of their nostalgic associations.  The QUANTITY of food he consumes is what amazes most people, particularly as it never seems to change his svelte figure and trim waistline.  Even when he’s sober this is the case, leading his loved ones to suspect that his ability to manipulate and channel forces of life and death somehow burns calories at an alarming rate.
4. does your muse have a good singing voice ?
Klaus is a competent singer, and at his best when crooning soft ballads or lullaby-like melodies.  He isn’t a prodigy, but his voice is always pleasant and on-pitch, unless he’s drunk and really belting something out karaoke-style.  His voice has a natural vibrato because it has a natural tremor, and that adds to its kind of wistful, haunting quality.
5. does your muse have any bad habits or nervous ticks ?
I mean, where do I begin? LOL.  The substance abuse habit is self-evident. Klaus also picks at calluses on his legs, and pulls off hangnails by himself.  He occasionally bites his nails, when in withdrawal. He jiggles his legs.  He frequently circulates his homestead naked or in just his underwear.  He tucks his hair behind his ears when he’s nervous, worried, embarrassed or upset.  He talks, whistles, and sings to himself.  He hangs off of loved ones physically, clinging on when they might prefer distance.  He’s pathologically conflict-avoidant and would sometimes rather be considered an asshole than simply open up about and explain his feelings, especially if they run counter to a loved one’s wishes.
6. what does your muse usually look like / wear?
Klaus is haute-couture, even if he has to fish it out of a Goodwill bin.  He has no set style as long as it’s contemporarily relevant and provocative. If he’s in the sixties, he’s a hippie. If he’s in the 2010s, he’s goth/”eurotrash.”  He likes comfort, so he will lean toward soft, luxurious, and snuggly fabrics.  He hates shoes and only wears them when necessary, which means he has a lot of slip-ons and sandals, with the occasional Converse or boot.  In his current mainverse, he’s re-embraced the hippie look, with occasional forays into undefinably “artsy” categories. Crop tops are frequent.  Dusters and oversized jackets are frequent. So are patterns, batiks and sequins.  You’ll see him in gender-fluid attire, often pairing a skirt with the tops mentioned, or wearing a spaghetti-strapped dress.  Jewelry is usually piles of long necklaces plus Dave’s dog tags, and bracelets made of glass or wooden beads. Very boho.
7. Is your muse affectionate?  How much?  How so?
Extremely, both physically and verbally. He may at first feign sardonic indifference, but once it’s clear his affection is appreciated, even reciprocated, you won’t get him off you.  He likes hugs, kisses, and legitimate full-body snuggles. This has been true since childhood, as it’s the one surefire way to distinguish the dead from the living.
He will also make you things: particularly ceramic vessels or knit clothing (especially scarves and mittens) as a way of demonstrating his desire to take care of you. He might try to cook, and he’s surprisingly good at that when he’s sober.
Finally he will give you quality time. He will sit with you in silent solidarity as long as you need it. He will listen to you without limit.  And he will offer what advice he can, and chances are, if you’re a younger person in the same position he once was, that advice will be lucid and comforting.
8. what position does your muse sleep in?
Klaus is a side or back sleeper alone, flinging himself down anywhere in a tangle of long limbs. With others, he will be more adaptable.
9. could you hear your muse in the hallway from another room ?
Lmao absolutely. Even if Klaus isn’t being loud and obnoxious, his voice projects and his charisma lures most people right in.

Best Nakiri Knife reviews
Here our list of best choices that meet all various needs.
1.MAC Series 6 1/2-Inch Japanese Vegetable Cleaver _best Nakiri knife for the money
Whether you are a home cook or a prep cook, this bad boy will give you the performance of a high-end nakiri without burning a hole in your pocket. It’s our favorite option under $100.
No wonder that Wirecutter’s top pick of chef knives has been a Mac product since 2013. MAC Traditional Nakiri 6.5″ is also the best-rated Nakiri knife by America’s Test Kitchen.
This bad boy is a Japan-made stamped knife. Its blade features a stain-resistant Molybdenum alloy steel with Rockwell 58°-59 and 15° blade angle.
Out of the box, this beast is sharp enough to shave hairs. It takes and holds its keen edge for a longer time. As a result, you will need less frequent sharpening.
To test this Nakiri knife, I used it to make mirepoix (soffritto). I’ve sliced, diced, and chopped onions, carrots, and celery. The Japanese vegetable knife glided through the stuff with that nice SHHHWICK sound like butter. It has even halved butternut squash with ease. It didn’t splinter or tear any of the ingredients.
Yet, with starchy veggies like potatoes, the slices stuck to the knife. To be honest, it wasn’t a big concern to me, especially at this price point.
It’s super-light (5.4 ounces) making it best for those who suffer from arthritic hands. Besides, it is thin behind the edge with 2.5 mm spine thickness. It’s beveled on both sides ( double bevel). So it is well suited for right and left hands.
This veg cleaver has a great balance towards the tip with a light handle and a hidden tang. Yet, it lacks a bolster, but as long as you use the pinch grip, it isn’t a problem.
In short, this thing is easy to handle and control.
The Mac Nakiri carries a 25-year warranty. However, it needs more TLC unless you will get numerous rust spots all over the blade. So, wash your knife manually with water and soap after using it. Put it under water after cutting acidic foods like citrus, and tomatoes. NO DISHWASHER. Don’t air dry, use your hands instead. Store it properly. It’s that simple!
Do this wisely and it will give you many years of happy use.
The fit & finish was my biggest pet peeve in that knife. There is a small gap between the blade and handle where food and water can find their way through. You need to squeeze a few drops of glue, or epoxy into this gap.
The spine was quite rough. So, you need to sand the back of the knife OTHERWISE you will end up with blisters.
It comes was a beautiful Pakkawood handle which will nestle comfortably at your hand
This beast outperformed a lot of my $300 knives. This exceptional performance at this price is a bargain.
Pros
Best value.
super-sharp with great edge retention.
Great performance
Easy to maneuver and control
Ergonomic ambidextrous handle.
25 years warranty
Cons
The Fit and finish is meh.
Needs extra attention to protect the blade against staining

2.Shun Premier Nakiri Knife, 5.5 TDM0742- Best Shun
If you don’t want to fuss with the sharpening and the chore of maintaining high carbon steels, that’s the ticket. The knife is perfect for any home cook regardless of his skill level and is highly recommended for vegans and crossfitters.
Sharpness
The core steel of this baby is VG-MAX ( upgrade of VG-10). That means this knife takes and retains a nice edge.
From Seki city in Japan, the blade comes incredibly sharp with a 61 HRC score. Shun also offers a free lifetime sharpening to your knife. You will only pay for shipping and processing. So, you don’t have to worry about the sharpening anymore.
Cutting food
I’m really surprised by the performance of this baby. The 5.5-inch agile blade drops through food like nothing. It will chop leafy lettuce, kale, and spinach all by itself without sending stuff flying off the cutting board.
The standout feature of stainless steel is that you don’t get the rapid oxidation or reactivity for tomatoes and onions. It made the job of slicing tomatoes like a child’s play. It’s finely diced onions and minced herbs into precise even cuts.
The knife is laser-ish with 1.9 mm spine thickness. I haven’t had any wedging or tearing issues using this blade.
The Shun Premier features a flat profile with a blunted tip. The rounded tip allows for slight rocking motion in case you like rock chopping.
This little thing is well-balanced with more weight towards the blade for powerful cuts. The textured blade reduces the drag and helps against food sticking.
Comfort
Shun Premier from kai is light weighing 5.9 ounces. It’s easy on the hands. It also features a curved bolster to get you a secure grip.
Besides, the handle is shorter and smaller than the Classic version making it perfect for ladies and people with small hands. Yet, if you have larger hands, the Shun classic Nakiri is a perfect choice.
Unlike the Shun Classic nakiri knife, the Premier’s handle is ambidextrous.
Durability
High carbon stainless steel is a breeze to maintain. Yet, VG-Max steel tends to be brittle and chippy.
The good news here is that if you’re a bit mindful of your knife, it will live to tell the tale. The lifetime warranty from Shun is a plus.
Fit and Finish
This baby is an eye-candy.
The knife comes mirror-polished with 68 micro-layers of hand-hammered Damascus steel…
This Japanese veg cleaver boasts an oval sleek ebony pakkawood handle with a walnut finish.
Cost
Although I appreciate the work that was put into this baby, IMO, it is quite pricey.
Bonus tip: If you’re searching for a nice gift for those SPECIAL people in your life, this knife would make a nice gift. They won’t stop flaunting it ( in a good way). For gift bag size, the knife comes in a black box with 15”x3”x1 1/8” inches.
Pros
Keen nimble blade out of the box.
Great precision
Less food drag and friction
Comfortable grip ( for smaller hands)
Free sharpening service.
Lifetime warranty.
Beautiful to behold.
Cons
Delicate
Expensive
No sheath

3.Wusthof Classic 7-Inch Nakiri Knife with Hollow Edge-Best Quality Nakiri
If you’re coming from German kitchen knives background with a heftier and robust feel, this knife will fit the bill.
The pioneer woman, Ree Drummond, loves and recommends this western-style knife. That was enough to add it to our list. Yet, it proved it deserves this spot well.
The Wusthof Classic Nakiri Knife is made in Solingen, Germany from high carbon steel (x50 Cr Mo V15). The long straight blade steel was hardened to 58 HRC with Precision Edge Technology with a 10° blade angle. This technology yields a 20% sharper blade with 2x edge retention.
That said, this forged knife’s factory edge comes razor-sharp. However, this kitchen knife dulls faster in the practical experience.
Moving along to the performance,
I prepped French onion soup to exercise it. This workhorse is a great performer. I’ve diced onion effortlessly with clean precise cuts. It will make your chopping, dicing, and mincing so much easier.
The hollow edge makes small air pockets between the products and the blade to push the food off.  Combine that with The PETec and the tantalizing taper of cutting edge. The result is a no-stick blade with SUPERB food release.
The Japanese knife is well-balanced with a blunted tip. This allows you to utilize rock chopping motion.
These knives are on the beefier, heavier side of the nakiri knives. So, it showed some wedging during julienning carrots.
Comfort & Durability
Wusthof Classic Nakiri boasts a polyoxymethylene (POM), comfortable triple-riveted handle. It will give you plenty of knuckle room. POM will resist fading, cracking, and shrinkage.
The bolster (where the blade meets the handle) will secure your fingers. Besides, the limited lifetime warranty is a great bonus.
The knife will last long enough to pass it on as expected from a German-build quality.
The finish is in line with what’s expected from a reliable maker like Wusthof.
Pros
German high quality.
Razor-sharp.
Clean cuts
No-stick blade
Rock chopping motion.
Easy to maneuver
Durable comfortable handle.
Cons
No sheath(Saya).
Needs frequent sharpenings.
It causes some wedging for firm vegetables.

4.Kai Wasabi Black Nakiri Knife Review- Best Nakiri knife for beginners
A beginner home chef or culinary student who wants to test-drive the profile?
Want a hassle-free knife without worrying about sharpening or maintenance? At $50 budget or less? This is the best nakiri knife under 50.
When searching for a cheap knife, you might get a diamond in the rough or you might get a total dud.
Off-brand knife? Hell NO, KAI is the parent of Kershaw and Shun cutlery knives.
The Wasabi Black Nakiri knife features a high carbon stainless steel blade (Daido 1K6 ).
The factory edge is adequately sharp for home users. The edge retention is better than the softer German steel. That was a big surprise for me.
You’ll feel the thinness ( tapering from 5 mm to 1.8 mm) and lightness ( 4.8 ounces) of the Japanese nakiri Knives. The nakiri vegetable knife is blade-heavy with a light handle.
The stamped knife has no problem with dicing, brunoising, julienning vegetables, and fruits.
Another big surprise, it minces delicate herbs without bruising and oxidation. Tbh, it did a little bruising to the basil. Still great!
Wasabi has a polypropylene ( hard plastic) matte-black handle. It is mixed with bamboo powder and an antibacterial agent to ensure you get clean food preparation.
Being said, it is super-practical and comfortable to use with a Japanese shape. It’s perfect for the pinch grip. Yet, it may be a little bit slippery. So, watch out for your fingers.
The Kai knife might be a plain jane in terms of beauty. But who cares at this price point?
This nakiri vegetable knife could develop rust spots and a slightly tarnished appearance. Bar Keeper ( or any other rust eraser)  will be your friend to remove the rust if it happens. Again, you need to be careful with this knife to avoid that.
The knife is dirt-cheap and it will only cost you a fraction of what a high-end brand does. It’s a joy to have it on your counter.
Pros
Inexpensive
Speed demon
Noobies-friendly
Takes a razor-sharp edge.
Easy on the hands.
Suitable for lefties.
Cons
Develop rust spots
Caused some wedging and sticking issues.
Slippery handle.
Have a cheap feeling.

5.Moritaka AS Long 180mm Nakiri Knife Review -Best carbon steel nakiri
If you’re a pro cook who wants a high-end versatile carbon-steel nakiri knife, that’s a prep workhorse. It will save you a lot of time processing tons of vegetables on your prep list.
It’s the LOOK and FEEL of a killer handmade blade thanks to the 27th generation blacksmith Tsunehiro Moritaka.
Am I exaggerating? Maybe. I’ll let you judge by yourself.
Sharpness
The highly-regarded Aogami Super steel has been aggressively heat-treated to 64-65°. So, ootb, Moritaka comes with a SCARY SHARP edge that will stay sharp for a crazy long time.
Cutting foods
The forged nakiri knife with 7.1 (182 mm) inches is the longest and the flattest ( with no belly) between our picks. Combine that with its relative heft (6 ounces) and the distal taper ( from 3.1mm to 2.5m). Thus, it can cut long and thick vegetables with the precision of a scalpel.
Moritaka AS long nakiri is well-balanced. It’s blade-heavy. This translates to more control and comfort.
This veg nakiri knife passed all my knife tests. It sliced straight through the printer paper. It glides through starchy vegetables with no wedging or sticking making precise sheet-thin slices.
Onions? Tofu? Carrots? Tomatoes? Or even butternut squash? Moritaka will slice, chop, dice, brunoise, and julienne every single piece of produce.
Comfort
The knife features a super-light wood octagonal handle. It feels great in your hands. It’s also suitable for both righties and lefties.
It has the widest blade among other contenders (60 mm). This will give you plenty of knuckle clearance with a non-abrasive spine. After one hour of prep, it stayed pretty comfortable as the first touch.
Durability
@maulanasadira Moritaka san makes great, very usable knives. They can rust a bit easy if you don't take care of them. Sooo take care of them
— Kevin Kent (@KnifeNerd) February 6, 2015
Both the core steel and clad are reactive. So it’s more susceptible to rust. As a result, it needs some level of care, especially with acidic vegetables.
So avoid hard and frozen foods, and dry it after every use, and you will be golden.
NB: The knife boasts stainless steel tang to enhance corrosion resistance. That’s the main reason for the color change right above the handle.
Fit & Finish
This vegetable cleaver is aesthetically surreal with a minimalistic mahogany-wood handle and Kurouchi rustic finish .
This finish differentiates this model from the Ishime line with a tsuchime finish.
Besides, the blade and spine are smooth and straight with engraved elite Kanji.
Cost
The Moritaka Nakiri knife is pretty reasonably priced for what it offers. It’s the best nakiri knife under 200 in the high carbon category.
Pros
A keen agile edge that will last longer.
Epic performance
Ambidextrous ergonomic handle.
Corrosion-resistant kurouchi finish.
Nice fit and finish.
Easy to resell.
Cons
All-reactive steel blade that needs more care.
Finish wears-off quickly.

6.Yoshihiro VG-10 16 Layer Hammered Damascus Stainless Steel Nakiri Vegetable Knife (6.5” (165mm))_ Best Damascus Nakiri knife
If you’re an entry-level chef who works in a “turn and burn ” restaurant with heavy production and a lot of greens prep with no time for maintenance, this is yours.
Yoshihiro comes with VG_10 WELL- MADE core steel with 60 HRC. The high carbon stainless steel is peace of mind to maintain. You only need to hand-wash it and sharpen it with a good whetstone.
Sharp? OOTB, the blade edge is razor-sharp. This bad boy takes and holds a very fine edge for a long time compared to other VG-10 knives. That is what I meant by “well-made steel”.
It glides through every type of vegetable easier than a hot knife through butter. It’s a solid performer. No matter the vegetables are hard or crispy, seedless or leafy, it will do the job as it Should.
This forged knife has a nice almost neutral balance with full tang extending through the handle. This makes it easy to control and manage. Besides, it is thin behind the edge with a spine (2.45 mm). So you can use it for precision cuts.
The food releases smoothly, thanks to the hand-hammered finish, nice grind, and decent blade geometry.
The knife is substantial in a Good Way. The type of heft (6.6 ounces) that’ll allow you to cut dense-root and hard vegetables without having joint soreness.
The western-style handle nestles comfortably in your hand.
When I saw the mirror-Polished hand-hammered finish, I was afraid to use it.
That’s a totally handcrafted knife in Japan not mass-produced. Beware of running this finish on a honing rod. The 16-layers Damascus steel clad with the Mahogany wood handle adds more beauty.
It is not the kind of knives that “grew legs and walked away”. It’s a lifetime investment.
The only drawback is that the bolster has a rough and sharp finish. So you need to touch it with sandpaper if you use the pinch grip.
Oh, I forgot to say, it is a right-handed knife.
Pros
Handcrafted in Japan
Ready to use out of the box.
Superior performance.
Easy to use and maintain.
Aesthetically appealing.
Great durability.
Cons
Poorly finished bolster.
Not suitable for left-handed people.
Not full waterproof handle

7.Tojiro Shirogami ITK Nakiri 165mm-best carbon steel nakiri under 50
This knife is a great introduction to Japanese carbon steel. You will learn how to care for and sharpen those types. I recommend it to any beginner knife hobbyist on a budget whether you’re a novice chef or a knife-obsessed home cook.
The blade edge, out of the box, is reasonably sharp. It might need a couple of strokes on the stones which is a nice opportunity to learn. Relax! It’s one of the easiest steels to sharpen.
Tojiro itk 165mm nakiri has White #2 (Shirogami) core. So, the knife takes a screaming edge and retains it well.
The vegetable knife has a 60 HRC rating which means it could chip easily if you mistreated it.
It is the lightest among our choices at 4.6 ounces, but also the thickest(3.7 mm at base). As the blade tapers to 1.5 mm at the middle. Then, the thickness is a blessing protecting your finger pad rather than a curse.
Itk has a neutral balance and a rounded tip making it more versatile. You can use pull or push chopping techniques.
It will chop, dice, and slice for daily salad making or gourmet vegetable prepping.
The blade construction consists of 3 layers. The core steel is coated with soft iron steel for protection. So we’ve got her an all-reactive blade with no stainless on it. This means that it can rust easily, especially with acidic vegetables.
As a result, you have to wipe it down frequently with a terry cloth and paper towel. Use Camellia oil to coat the blade between meal prep.
This nakiri knife has a dark finish (kurouchi) to give you the rustic traditional Japanese lovely look. Expect the blade to patina (color change). This will protect the knife from corrosion a little bit.
The virgin nakiri has gaps between handles that you need to fill up with glue. You’ll also need to smooth the spine with sandpaper.
It comes with a D-shaped wa handle (Japanese). It’s well-suited for righties ONLY.
The Knife is affordable and will offer more than you pay for with a price tag under $50.
Pros
Traditional Nakiri profile
High carbon steel
Easy to sharpen
Versatile
Lightweight and well-balanced
Great value for money.
Cons
All-reactive-steel with a high tendency for rusting.
Fragile.
Fit & Finish needs some improvements.
Right-handed only.

Nakiri Cutting Technique
Commonly, the Nakiri Knife isn’t rocker as the chef knife nor an axe like a Chinese chef’s knife. Unlike the all-purpose Santoku blade, nakiri knives are specialized at chopping vegetables.
Here are the major nakiri knife techniques that you need to learn.
#1.Push (thrust) cutting technique
You need to move the knife down and forward and keep it parallel to the cutting board.
youtube
2. Up and down cutting technique (tap chopping)
As the name suggests, you need to move the knife in up and down motion tapping on the cut surface.
#3.Rock cutting technique
This motion relies basically on a knife with a belly. The reason I included is that many knife makers increase the roundness of the nakiri tip to make it more versatile. IMO, the nakiri isn’t meant to do that.
How to Choose the Best Japanese Vegetable Knives?
Looking for a good nakiri knife? Shopping for knives could be an intimidating process. However, it all comes down to your personal preference, your budget, and your skill level.
Here’s your nakiri knife buying guide to choose the optimal option for you.
#1.Cutting Food
Food release
This is the bread and butter of a knife. There’s a multitude of factors that define the knives performance such as:
Balance
Balance means where the center of the mass is concentrated. Think of it as if you put the knife on your finger, where the knife will settle.
Knives are either blade-heavy or neutral or handle-heavy. Always opt for a neutral or blade- heavy knife. Those are well-balanced knives.
Additionally, blade-heavy items will give you more powerful cuts. Yet, you might sacrifice with some precision using those blades.
All our picks in the list are either neutral or blade-heavy. We excluded any handle-heavy knives as their performance was subpar.
Food Separation
Food release and Blade Geometry
The thinness of the blade and the grind ( the shape of the blade cross-section)  are the most significant over here. Knives with thick spines tend to have a V-shaped grind. As a result, they will cause wedging and tearing instead of slicing.
We found that the perfect blade width sets between 1.2 mm-3.5 mm at the middle of the spine.
Food Release
This means that the food doesn’t stick to the blade after chopping. The blade finish plays a big role here. The knife makers have overcome this problem by using one of two modifications.
Granton Edge (known also as hollow ground edge)
It’s a series of dimples or scallops along the edge. These indentations form small air pockets between the blade and the slice. Then, the air breaks down the food’s water content allowing the food to release smoothly.
Wusthof Classic 7-Inch is our favorite hollow edge nakiri knife.
Tsuchime ( hand-hammered finish) This finish reduces the friction and drag when slicing food. Besides, other types of finishes help in food release to some extent.
Tsuchime
Cutting edge Angle
A lower angle means more shaper blades. Although this allows for effortless chopping, it comes at the expense of durability.
The best nakiri kitchen knife generally falls between 8° to 16 degrees angle.
I found that 12 degrees and above is decent for newbies. No worries, you can modify this angle during the sharpening process.
#2.Blade length & size
Size always matters:D
This rule also applies here. The standout feature of the nakiri knives is that you use the entire blade length. But what’s the best size of a nakiri knife?
Well, it depends.
A nakiri bocho knife lengths range from 5 to 7 inches in most cases. So, they fall into 2 categories.
Short nakiris ( 5 inches)
Short nakiris are perfect for the push-cutting technique as they’ll give you more control over the blade.
So, opt for a short nakiri knife if you have a kitchen with minimal space or you’re a beginner.
Long nakiris ( 7 inches) This type is well-suited for professional settings and tap choppers. The blade length will give you more mileage.
It’s also great if you want to cheat and use nakiri for everything.
#4.Sharpness
Sharpness hinges on the blade material (blade steel type). There are 2 basic types of steel based on the amount of carbon.
High carbon _ Knives with high carbon steel tend to be harder. As a result, they’re way sharper and have great edge retention. They’re also easy to sharpen.
But, REMEMBER, a knife with pure high carbon steel will rust and chip easily if you mistreat it.
Low Carbon _ Low amount of carbon will give you a softer tougher knife. This means that you can avoid the microchips issues. That also means it will dull faster and then you’ll need to sharpen it frequently.
Choose a knife with medium to high carbon stainless steel and you’ll get the best of both worlds.
Make sure that your chosen knife is sharp out of the box and ready to go. Sharp knives are capable of slicing straight-through paper. That’s how you can test them.
#5.Durability
Durability means how long your knife will live since its first use. It’s a blend of blade hardness and toughness as well as the handle material and the overall craftsmanship of the blade.
Steel Hardness
Steel hardness is measured by the Rockwell scale (HRC). Higher scores mean harder steel. High-quality hard steel( 64-65) is way more expensive than softer steel (53-55 ).
Look for Nakriris with above 58 HRC score and Bob’s your uncle.
Handle
The Pakkawood handle is my favorite. That’s because this wood/resin composite is waterproof, wear-resistant, and has less discoloration.
If the handle is not fully waterproof, it might contract or expand in various temperatures and humidity levels.
You might also choose between wa handle ( Japanese half tang handle) or western handle. It’s totally up to you here.
Wa handle
#6.Comfort
Comfort depends on many factors like the handle shape and finish as well as the total knife’s weight.
You should hold the handle and double-check that it’s smooth, not slippery, and comfortable to grip. Also, pay attention you have plenty of knuckle room during use.
Pinch-grip the knife and make sure that the spine or the bolster is curved or at least smooth. That will protect you from getting a callus on your index finger if you make a few big meals
Although nakiri knives are 40% lighter than other types with the same length, heavier blades will cause fatigue to your wrist in busy long shifts. So, that’s another metric to check.
I found that 4.5-6.7 ounces to be a happy medium between good heft needed for chopping and comfort needs.
#.7 Price
Please don’t skimp on your kitchen knives unless you’re planning to buy a beater knife. A decent nakiri will set you back from $80 to $300.
You can cap yourself at 50 bucks if you’re a noob who wants to play with the profile. Use the whole blade, learn push cutting, feel how much you like your first nakiri knife and THEN you can upgrade.
Our Verdict
Nakiri knives are indispensable for chopping delicate vegetables. It will tackle all your veggies mise-en-place cutting tasks if you are a professional chef.
A stir-fry meal? A french soup? A salad for snacks? Easy as 1, 2, 3. For home users, it will speed up your meal prep time and turn your cooking chores into a joy.
We found MAC Traditional Nakiri 6.5″ to be an excellent choice. It will serve you well without being a burden on your budget.
Our Pick
MAC Series 6 1/2-Inch Japanese Vegetable Cleaver

Your bathroom is full of unnecessary junk.
Here’s the truth: half of the stuff in your personal care products is unnecessary. The “split-end repair” in your conditioner is silicone. The “clarifying” in your shampoo is sulfates.
This subject isn’t just for girls, or even just for people who care about how their body wash smells. The parabens in your shampoo can cause birth defects. The aluminum in your deodorant can give you breast cancer. The formaldehyde can give you cancer. These are problems that can affect anyone regardless of gender or age.
OK, it’s not that drastic. Don’t throw out all of your bottles and jars just yet. Chemicals aren’t always dangerous. Artificial additives aren’t always dangerous. When I start to talk about this subject, many people make hippy jokes, or say, “Water is a chemical!” I’d like to begin by emphasizing that many of the chemicals I’d like to touch on aren’t going to cause immediate harm. Or, at least they haven’t been proven to yet. At the least, many chemicals haven’t been in use long enough to show side effects. So, the point I offer, is why take the risk for a dollar or two cheaper?
Fortunately, it isn’t rocket science to avoid harmful ingredients. I’m no expert, but after some short research over time, I can look at an ingredients list and tell you it’s integrity.
I’d like to offer a short breakdown of my dealbreakers.
- Parabens: Parabens are a naturally-occurring preservative that has been used for hundreds of years and have proven very effective at preventing bacterial growth. However, studies have shown that parabens are a possible carcinogen, or endocrine disruptor, aka reproductive disruption. I think most of us would like to play it safe, and most products fortunately advertise as paraben-free.
- Silicones: Silicones are a plasticy polimer included in countless moisturizers and hair care products. All silicones do is coat your hair in their plasticy coating to create a smooth feeling. Over time, they build up, making hair feel heavy and dry. They keep moisture out and in skincare, can clog pores and cause acne. No thanks!
- Sulfates: Sulfates are a surfactant - AKA they lift oil and buildup easily. Sulfates aren’t bad for everyone. However, if you have dry skin, dry hair, thin hair, hair loss, eczema, just to name a few, you’ll want to avoid them. Personally, sulfates make my hair extremely dry immediately. Many products use silicones to cover up the drying effect. Sulfates in shampoo lift silicone residue, silicone in conditioner seals the drying effect of sulfates, and the cycle continues.
- Phalates: Phalates are another endocrine disruptor/hormone mimicking chemical. Fortunately, in my experience, phalates are advertised to be excluded from most personal care products. Still good to know, and I still always look for this fact on the label!
My personal frustration with this particular subject is the fact that it doesn’t take a lot to get these risky chemicals out of our products. According to Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, Canada has banned hundreds, the EU thousands, of chemicals from personal care products that are known to cause respiratory, reproductive, neurological, or any bodily harm whatsoever. Connecticut even passed a statement telling stores to simply “follow the rules of the EU”, which isn’t even a law or seriously enforced. Here’s a harrowing fact; the U.S. has only banned or restricted 11. Doesn’t that bug you? It bugs me! You don’t hear Canadians or citizens of the EU complaining about their selection, so why can’t we do the same?
Let us touch on the demon of personal care products, and you’ll understand the answer to that question: Fragrance. I believe the ingredient of fragrance tells an interesting story regarding the truth behind ingredient lists. When one reads fragrance on a bottle, they’re probably assuming its actually fragrance. Maybe some essential oils, natural scents? Instead, fragrance is used as a hidden umbrella term that companies use to get around the FDAs ingredient requirement, which details that companies must include full ingredient lists. If there are some ingredients companies don’t want you to see, they can legally hide it by including it under the term “fragrance”. This includes PHALATES! Did I mention phalates have been linked to many hazardous health conditions, such as reduced sperm count, liver and breast cancers, reproductive malformation, and diabetes?! Yikes! I saved that fact to really emphasize that companies are trying to hide this from you! Another example of an ingredient that can be hidden is various types of alcohol, which while isn’t quite a harmful ingredient, is a drying ingredient that people with dry skin may want to avoid. Those two, along with over 3,000 other chemicals. Yes, 3,000 chemicals hiding under one single word.
An easy way to avoid these chemicals is a simple “fragrance-free”, or honestly just “insert-chemical-here free” which are usually at the forefront of most products because its good for advertising! In my personal opinion, if corporate greed means better quality products, that’s fine by me! It’s the same logic behind the greater accessibility of organic and vegan foods, which is a whole other blog post in itself! It’s one that I probably would write if I was vegan or generally cared! That is a lie, I do care what I eat, but that isn’t what this is about.
This relates to a subject that I think we all should have been doing for a long time, which is applicable to many things, not just personal care. Knowing what you are putting on your skin and ingesting takes a small amount of research! A good deal of the information in here is off the top of my head (yes, I did check all of my definitive statements before making them). The amount of information on this subject is endless but concise, concise because the people behind publicizing this information want everyone to know! As they should, because companies nowadays are only going to advertise what they don’t have, not what they do. This is another habit I want to impose onto you, the reader, to practice. If you find a product advertises “No sulfates or parabens,” go ahead and double check for phalates and fragrance. And vise versa. Obviously. It’s a lot more likely than you think and is the biggest thing that bothers me about the corporate greed I was talking about. It doesn’t take a genius to notice the plethora of buzzwords shoved down consumers throats on every single product they ever own ever. This is a subject that took me such a small amount of time to become fluent in, so I try to encourage anyone who will listen to me to take my advice.
If it isn’t apparent, none of these ingredients are necessary! There are easy alternatives that aren’t expensive to produce. Plus, many products that don’t include these mentioned chemicals have more good stuff, including more responsibly sourced ingredients (there’s those buzz words coming in!). I’ve come to notice when I’m shopping that the prices for better products are indistinguishable from their chemically-troubling counterparts. This is because many of these ingredients are not only ineffective, but not even a cheaper alternative anymore. For example, Triclosan was a common ingredient in many soaps, toothpastes, detergents, and toys. It’s also one of the few ingredients restricted by the FDA. This is because it causes birth defects and reproductive harm. So why was it found in 3 out of 4 people’s bodies up to its ban? This ingredient was used in virtually every personal care product available!
I want to touch on that bolded sentence: found in people’s bodies. Yes, that is why this is important. A lot of people think; I’m just washing my hair with it, I’m not eating it or drinking it. Our skin absorbs everything we put on it. This really should make sense and should really matter to you. Think about everything that touches your skin for extended periods on any given day. Body wash. Lotion. Shampoo. Conditioner. Aftershave. Leave-in. Hair gels. The list goes on. This is why it’s important to be somewhat aware of what is in those products. It is all absorbed into your body, and trackingly so. As stated, there are tests that can track the chemicals absorbed into your body. Personally, I don’t want to have enough of anything artificial in my body that it can be traced.
A resource that has greatly helped me in this journey of product understanding is the Environmental Working Group. Not only does EWG have countless information regarding the information I’ve discussed here, with entire well-cited articles surrounding any single aspect included here, but they also have a handy-dandy database that gives you a quick summary of any product you own. You can type in any product and get an easy to understand rating, score, and explanation about all of the ingredients in it. Even if you don’t care about this subject in particular, it can still be interesting to see! They even have an app with an easy barcode scanner and are always adding products to their database.

What Is Microfiber Leather
Microfiber leather is an abbreviation of ultrafine fiber PU synthetic leather. It is a non-woven fabric made of three-dimensional structure network by carding acupuncture with microfiber staple fiber. After wet processing, PU resin impregnation, alkali reduction, and dermabrasion and polishing And other processes eventually make microfiber leather. It is made by adding ultra-fine fiber to PU polyurethane, which makes the toughness, air permeability and abrasion resistance further strengthened; it has extremely excellent abrasion resistance, excellent cold resistance, breathability, and aging resistance. Eco-friendly, Comprehensive performance beyond real leather. Widely used for automotive, garment, bags, sofa, shoes, boots, basketball, belt, jewellery box and so on. We are specialize in microfiber leather production manufacture. We provide the optimal leather options, the best leather substitute and best leather alternatives for automotive seat covers and interiors, furniture & sofa upholstery, footwear and shoes, bags, garments, gloves, balls, etc.
While synthetic leather were once considered not suitable for high quality shoes,  PU microfiber leather has changed how shoes are made.
Microfiber leather is designed to hold up against weather conditions and the wear and tear of walking and running over an extended period of time.
They can retain their form very well, and thus are usually very durable if cared for properly. They're also more water-resistant and lighter than real leather, making them great for long wear and outdoor activities.
We found this video, below, that tests how durable shoes made with suede microfiber leather are. Check it out!
Microfiber leather, or micro fiber leather, is the highest quality grade synthetic leather (faux leather or PU leather), a high-tech simulation of high-end leather material. WINIW Microfiber Leather is simulated the structure of natural leather, using sea-island superfine micro fiber (ultra-fine fiber bundle), and high-grade polyurethane resins as raw materials, using needle punched nonwoven technology of 3D structure, has a lot of similar characters as natural leather, however better physical & chemical performance, has been widely popular around the world. Because of superior performance, WINIW microfiber synthetic leather has been the best leather alternatives and the optimal leather substitute, material, best vegan leather and eco leather, can replace natural leather perfectly!
Compared to natural leather, microfiber synthetic leather has many excellent qualities, such as chemical resistance and physical and mechanical properties. However, preparation of microfiber synthetic leather with a high water vapor transmission rate (WVT), moisture absorption and wearing comfort property is still a challenge. In this study, we prepared thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/sulfonated polysulfone (SPSf) electrospun nanofibers and applied them to a microfiber synthetic leather base (MSLB). The effects of TPU/SPSf nanofiber content on the structure and properties of the MSLB were investigated. The results indicated that the TPU/SPSf nanofibers with an average diameter of 0.12 µm were well distributed at all directions in the MSLB. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed four Tg peaks, further demonstrating the existence of TPU/SPSf nanofibers. With the increase of TPU/SPSf nanofiber content from 0 to 30 wt%, the contact angles decreased gradually from 111.64° to 67.07°, leading to 55.19% improvement in the WVT value (from 2868.96 to 4452.24 g/(m2•24 h)) and 26.25% improvement in the moisture absorption (from 628.70% to 793.75% mm/s). Simultaneously, when the nanofiber content was 30 wt%, the nanofibers tended to bundle and 6.79% decrement of air permeability was observed. Specifically, the softness of the MSLB was improved by 88.55%. Moreover, the thermal stability and the tear strength were also obviously enhanced. Consequently, this research provided a feasible and promising way to prepare a high-performance MSLB using TPU/SPSf nanofibers.
The difficulty in dyeing microfiber base filled with ordinary polyurethane presents a significant challenge in maintaining the uniformity and highly realistic appearance of the resulting products. In the present study, a type of acid-dyeable polyurethane (PU-MDEA; MDEA=N-methyldiethanolamine) was synthesized, and its chemical structure and dyeing properties were investigated. Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis indicated that cationic groups were successfully incorporated into the PU-MDEA backbone via chain extension using MDEA. The amorphous nature of PU-MDEA was determined by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and polarizing optical microscopy. Owing to the strong binding between these cationic groups and acid dye, as well as the reduced resistance to dye penetration, PU-MDEA showed better dyeability toward the acid dyes studied herein when compared with the control sample (microfiber synthetic leather filled with ordinary polyurethane). The adsorption isotherm experiment revealed that the dyeing process conformed to the Langmuir model, thereby indicating that the acid dyes attached to PU-MDEA via strong ionic bonding rather than van der Waals forces or hydrogen bonding. Additionally, it was found that the wastewater resulting from the dyeing of the microfiber synthetic leather filled with PU-MDEA exhibited environmentally friendly characteristics when compared with that displayed by the control sample (microfiber synthetic leather filled with ordinary polyurethane). Thus, the current results show the potential of PU-MDEA, as a filler, in the manufacture of microfiber synthetic leather to achieve fast dyeing rate, high dye uptake, and good color fastness, thereby improving the uniformity and highly realistic appearance of the resulting products.
Bonded leather is called ‘leather’ because it incorporates scraps of leather remnants, which comprise between 10-20% of its content. The scraps of leather are made into a pulp and stuck to a fibre or paper backer which is then coated with polyurethane and embossed to give it the appearance of genuine leather.
The price of an article is an immediate indication as to whether you are buying genuine leather. At a glance, bonded leather may look like the real thing but it will feel thin to the touch and will lack the softness of real leather, it may also exude a chemical smell.
WHAT IS BONDED LEATHER MATCH?
This term refers to the ability of bonded leather manufacturers to replicate the appearance of real leather, although it is likely that the product may be dyed in a striking range of unnatural colours.
For most people this will be a choice dictated by the comparative low cost of the product; some may choose bonded leather because it can be regarded as environmentally friendly, in so much as it uses left overs and does not involve additional farming and, potentially, reduces landfill. The product is also easy to clean and is likely to come in a wide range of design options.
Bonded leather should be wiped with a clean damp cloth and wiped dry with a different cloth. Spilt liquids should be cleaned immediately but no detergents or abrasive cleaners should be used. Non-alkaline cleaners and non-detergent soaps can be used but the material should always be tested for colour fastness on a small unobtrusive area first.
HOW DURABLE IS BONDED LEATHER?
Bonded leather is not a durable product. Generally, furniture made from bonded leather is likely to peel and crack within two to five years.
WHAT CAUSES BONDED LEATHER TO PEEL AND CRACK?
Bonded leather is a non-elastic material; therefore, it has a tendency to crack with use, strips of polyurethane and leather will then start to peel away from the backing.
WHY IS BONDED LEATHER BAD?
Compared with leather, bonded leather has a very short lifespan. It is prone to cracking and peeling and once it has deteriorated beyond a certain point it is impossible to repair. Although a bonded leather may be cheaper than real leather, it’s short life span means that in the long run the cost of replacing a bonded leather item can be more expensive. There is also the argument that this also makes it less environmentally friendly.
HOW TO REPAIR BONDED LEATHER
There are repair kits on the market which enable you to make small repairs to bonded leather. The affected area must be sanded to remove any protruding bits of leather, a patch can then be dyed to match or the fabric under the peel can be dyed and sealed to stop further peeling. The resulting repair will be noticeable but will be an improvement.
HOW TO FIX BONDED LEATHER SCRATCHES
First clean the area with a white cloth to ensure that no dye is transferred. Then mix a leather repair solution together with an appropriate tint. Add a small quantity of the mixture to the affected area and around the affected area. Then place leather grained paper, supplied with the kit, over the area and gently iron with a warm iron, this will transfer the pattern to the repair. Be careful to ensure that the iron is not too hot because it may discolour or damage the bonded leather. For minor scratches, it may be possible to affect a repair with the use of shoe polish. You should also check any new products on a small inconspicuous area of the leather item first.
Top Grain leather is the second highest grade quality of leather and is the lower part of the top layer of the hide. One removed it is sanded and refinished. It comes in two grades, aniline, which is natural soft leather which is vulnerable to stains and semi-aniline which has a protective coating. Top Grain leather is comprised of twelve to fourteen percent water and consequently it adjusts to body temperature: it is cool in summer and warm in winter. With bonded leather the reverse is the case.
BONDED LEATHER VERSUS REAL LEATHER
Real Leather, also referred to as Genuine Leather is the third grade of leather, taken from the lower, thinner layer of the hide. The surface is then reworked to resemble a higher-grade leather. It is not as tough as Full grain leather or Top Grain leather but is considerably more durable than bonded leather.
BONDED LEATHER VERSUS FAUX LEATHER
Faux leather, sometimes referred to as Pleather, contains no animal products and is made from polyurethane. It can be embossed with any texture and looks and feels like genuine leather. It is water resistant and easy to clean. Unlike bonded leather it does not crack or fade in sunlight, it is however, easy to tear or puncture. It is also considered less environmentally friendly due to the chemicals and toxins used in its production – although this varies depending on the exact process and materials used to produce it.
BONDED LEATHER VERSUS DURABLEND
Durablend is a low-cost leather alternative, similar to bonded leather and comprising of 57% polyurethane, 26% poly/cotton and 17% leather shavings. It is the trademark product of Ashley Furniture. Customer reviews suggest that it shares similar weaknesses with bonded leather in so much as it scratches easily and is prone to cracking.
BONDED LEATHER VERSUS VINYL
Polyvinyl chloride, popularly known as Vinyl or PVC is a faux leather which has been produced since the 1940’s by chemical companies like DuPont. It is used for shoes, car interiors and upholstery. Not as breathable as bonded leather, skin tends to stick to its surface, which makes it unpleasant seating in hot weather, it is easy to clean and maintain. Like bonded leather it cracks with use and is easy to puncture.
BONDED LEATHER VERSUS MICROFIBER
A much more sophisticated form of faux leather: polyurethane resin and ultra- fine microfiber leather for automotive are combined to replicate the microscopic structure of leather. The complexity of its construction mean that it is more expensive than other faux products but it does have a number of advantages over bonded leather. It doesn’t scratch or tear and is non-fading. It breathes like real leather but it also has ant -bacteria and anti-mildew properties. Unlike bonded leather it is completely odourless.
BONDED LEATHER VERSUS REXINE
Rexine is the registered trademark of a British artificial leather which has been produced since the 1920’s. Essentially a cloth backing is coated with cellulose nitrate and embossed to produce the illusion of leather. Primarily used for car interiors this is now regarded as retro faux leather and as such is sort out by collectors.
BONDED LEATHER VERSUS BICAST
Bicast is constructed using a split leather backing to which a layer of polyurethane is applied. The surface is then embossed to give the appearance of leather. It shares many of the qualities of bonded leather: it has a consistent texture and is easy to clean and maintain but it doesn’t breathe like leather and it lacks strength and durability.
BONDED LEATHER VERSUS LEATHERETTE
Leatherette is a plastic based synthetic leather. Unlike bonded leather it does not scratch and it does not fade in sunlight. Like most faux leather, it does not breathe and is unpleasant next to the skin. Although it might be the preferred choice of those who don’t like to use animal products, it is made from non- biodegradable, non-renewable materials and is therefore considered less environmentally friendly.

Billie Razors Review
The pink tax has been a known issue and a reality for several decades now. But what is pink tax, you might ask. Pink tax refers to brands tending to charge different prices for the same products, depending on whether they are targeted to men or women, with the women’s ones always costing more for no real reason. Several studies found that on average products targeted at women are 7% more expensive than those for men. And the most infamous example of this is the Gillette vs the Venus razor. And you guessed it, the Venus is more expensive than the men’s Gillette despite being an essentially identical product, produced by the same company.
That is where Billie comes in. Noticing this unfair bias towards female consumers, the brand launched a razor for women that scraps the pink tax and its price stacks up against men’s razor’s on the market. But is the Billie razor any good and is it worth the investment? And who or what is this Billie anyway? In this Billie razors review, we are going to answer those questions and more, as well as take a close look at the brand’s more recently launched products, its values and philosophy. So read on to find out.

About Billie
Billie is a New York-based brand founded by Georgina Gooley and Jason Bravman that launched in 2017 with a range of women’s razors. Since then, the brand has released other beauty products and its offering now also includes stylish medicine cabinet essentials like a shaving cream, lip balms, dry shampoo, body wash and more.
Billie never wanted to be just another brand and launched with several missions. The first was to get rid of the unfair pink tax, as discussed above. The founders noticed that women were overpaying for razors and wanted to offer a fairly priced alternative. The way they are able to do that is by operating under an online direct to consumer system, therefore they don’t have to pay a cut to any middle man or a retail space. Additionally, the razors are available for purchase only on subscription. And while it is easy to cancel the subscription or reschedule shipments, it encourages customers to stay on.
The brand is revolutionizing the industry by displaying body hair in its imagery, used in ads, on social media and its website. This “bold” move that goes against the standards of razor campaigns, where women “shave” what can only be described as smooth glowing skin, has earned the brand coverage on sites like Nylon, Refinery29 and InStyle. This the brand calls its ‘Project Body Hair’ and it is a rebellion against women often being shamed for having body hair that is, at the end of the day, natural.
Billie falls into the category of clean beauty brands, having a long list of potentially harmful ingredients or, groups of thereof, that the brand categorically does not include in its products, such as sulfates, parabens, GMOs, drying alcohols, fragrances or dyes. The brand uses the Environmental Working Group (EWG) as a guide and only uses ingredients verified by the group or ones that receive a rating between 1 and 3/10. The EWG specializes in research of toxic chemicals among other things.
To show support for the causes close to the founders’ hearts and that go hand in hand with the brand’s values, Billie has been donating 1% of its revenue since its very beginnings to charitable organizations such as Every Mother Counts (working to make pregnancy and birth safe for all women around the world) or Black Girls Code (providing IT education to African-American girls).

Razor Starter Kit Review
The Razor Starter Kit is Billie’s star product, as well as its very first. The razor has won several awards, including Allure’s Best of Beauty and making the Beauty Hit List of Nylon. The Billie razor kit is available for purchase only through the brand’s ‘shave plan’ subscription, however, the shipments can be rescheduled, skipped or cancelled any time.
The kit includes an ergonomic handle with anti-slip rubber back (you are given a choice of six colors to choose from), two rust-resistant five-blade razor refills coated in aloe vera soap for a smooth and gentle shave, and a magnetic holder so that you can keep your razor in the shower at all times, protecting it from ending up in the shower puddle. And all of that for $9 with free shipping.
When arranging your subscription on the website, Billie gives you the choice of receiving your refills either once a month, every two months or three months, depending on how often you shave. This can, of course, be changed at a later time. For every refill shipment the brand also charges $9 with free shipping and each includes four refill blades.

Shave Cream Review
When Billie launched its beauty products, it only made sense for the range to include a shaving cream since the brand’s main product is the famed razor. And so Billie delivered the Shave Cream. Instead of the usual foam sprayed from an aerosol can that we have come to expect from shaving creams, the brand opted for an actual creamy formula. Stored in a stylish white bottle with the brand’s logo printed across in large colourful lettering, which will surely look great on your bathroom shave, the cream is made with a blend of moisturizing shea butter and olive oil, that both nourish the skin and help the razor to smoothly glide on the surface of the skin. For anti-inflammatory, soothing and healing benefits, Billie includes aloe vera and sage in the rich pillowy formula.
Keeping with Billie’s affordable price points, a 6.5 fl. oz. bottle retails for $8 and can be purchased as a one-off product, no need for a subscription. However, if you do sign up for a subscription, you can always add one of these on.

Wonder Wipes Review
Another subscription-only product by Billie are its Wonder Wipes. The brand cites avoiding running out as the reason for them being subscription-exclusive, but just like with the Billie razor, you can change, skip or cancel your shipments of Wonder Wipes.
Wonder Wipes are essentially makeup wipes that claim to remove all of your makeup in a single swipe. And not only that. The brand goes as far as to say that one wipe can be used in place of an entire skincare routine. That we’re not convinced about.
In a time, when most are moving away from makeup wipes as they are deemed inefficient and wasteful, which doesn’t align with the current move towards sustainability, it surprising for a brand to come out with new makeup wipes and such claims on top of that.
One pack of Wonder Wipes includes 25 biodegradable wipes which can be delivered every month or two months for $9 each with free shipping. They are infused with cleansing agents, as well as hyaluronic acid and vitamin C serum for extra hydration and brightening. There is also a known difference between moisturization and hydration and while hyaluronic acid is a known hydrator, Billie claims this ingredient to deliver moisture instead.

Dry-Bye Body Lotion Review
Another product launch that made sense for Billie to come out with was a body lotion or cream – something to soothe and moisturise the body after shaving. And so Dry-Bye Body Lotion was born. The lotion includes moisturizing shea butter, grapeseed oil to help lock in the moisture, and chamomile to calm, heal and soothe the shaved or irritated areas. The formula avoids any stickiness or greasy shiny look and instead delivers a matte finish.
The body lotion comes in a stylish bottle with a pump, similar and matching with the one of the shaving cream. They will look great sitting next to one another in your medicine cabinet. This product is available for one-off purchases and a bottle of 8 fl. oz. retails for $12.

Sudsy Body Wash Review
To finish off the body care range, the last product is the Sudsy Body Wash. A shower gel designed for everyday use, this product has a rich and creamy texture and is both soothing and moisturizing, thanks to Billie’s recurring hero ingredients – aloe vera and shea butter, with the addition of rosehip oil, which protects and hydrates the skin, restores elasticity and is a powerful antioxidant. The formula doesn’t include any foaming agents but creates a natural lather.
As a brand made specifically for women, Billie made sure the formula is pH balanced so that it can be used all over the body, including the intimate areas, without drying out the skin. The body wash of course comes in a bottle matching the lotion and shaving cream and 12 fl. oz. retail for $9.

Super Salve Review
Dipping its toes in the world of makeup, Billie has most recently released the Super Salve lip balm in six different variations. The $9 balm is available in three tinted options, three untinted and five of them are naturally flavoured. Despite the addition of flavour, it is highly discouraged to consume these lip balms. The collection includes:
Classic, a clear variation that is both untinted and unflavored
Minty, an untinted option with a cooling minty flavor
Sorbet, a sheer pink colour with a lemon flavor
Parsley, an untinted one with a herbal taste
Rhubarb, a wash of a red shade with a sweet flavor
Fig, a burgundy shade with a jam-like taste
With only a handful of ingredients, the formula is deeply hydrating thanks to the likes of avocado oil, sunflower oil, candellila wax (a vegan substitute for beeswax) and naturally derived vitamin E that makes the balm so smooth. It is then stored in a coloured tube (each flavour has its own colour) in a clear case. The packaging is yet again very visually appealing.

Billie Customers Reviews
We have, of course, also looked at several existing customer reviews of the Billie razors and the company in general. What we found was that the reviews on the brand’s website are almost unanimously positive, with the razor scoring a 4.9/5 rating based on over 10,000 reviews, all singing the product’s praises how it’s not only the most affordable option out there, but the best performing one. On the other hand, searching through Trustpilot, the company as a whole has earned an overall rating of 4.2/5, which is significantly lower. While still the majority of customers left positive feedback, there are many that were most of the time dissatisfied with the customer service provided by the company. As customers can only contact Billie via email, many a time they do not receive a reply or not a very helpful one. Shipping also often takes a longer time than promised. Here are some example of the Billie customer reviews for you to make your own judgement:
“I am telling everyone I know to try this razor!! I have used many different types of razors & shavers over time and was never completely finished without at least one nick or a few left over. Not with this razor!! It felt like I wasn’t even shaving just running silk over my legs- it was actually an enjoyable experience!”
“I purchased a razor and shaving cream a month ago. Received tracking information a week later and still haven’t received the package. Contacted the company by email since they do not offer other options and did get a response saying if shipping details were not updated within 24 hours, let them know. I’ve emailed them 3 additional times since and never heard back. Completely unacceptable. I would not recommend this company.”
“I’ve been let down by every razor available on the market. I stumbled across an ad for Billie and decided to give it a try. I’m so glad I did! The closeness of the shave is unbeatable and lasts for days which has never been a thing for me. I will definitely be keeping my subscription.”

Billie Shipping and Return Policy
Shipping
Billie ships only domestically to all 50 US states, but doesn’t deliver internationally, not even to Canada. While the shaving plan subscription service and the makeup wipe subscription include free shipping, one-off orders under $15 are charged $4 for shipping. But again, if the order is over $15, the shipping is complimentary.
Returns
In terms of the returns policy, the brand is not very clear on this anywhere on the website. All that the site states is to get in touch with the team via email within 30 days of receiving your order. So we assume the brand operates under a 30-day return policy.
Contact Billie
If there are still questions left unanswered after reading our Billie review, we recommend getting in touch with the brand directly via:
Email at [email protected] where customer service representatives are ready to help every day of the week between 10am and 5pm ET

Billie: Editors Verdict
Billie is an innovative brand of razors that has found a gap in the market and decided to fill it and we command the founders for it. The fact that the brand is very conscious when it comes to affordability but doesn’t let that impact the quality of the product is again something we appreciate. However, the areas we feel the brand needs to work on is its customer service, the ways in which customers can get in touch with the team, as that is currently only via email, as well as the reliability of its shipping, being an online only brand that is something Billie should have mastered. But taking all of that (and more) into consideration, do we think that Billie is worth the investment? Overall, we believe that it is. Some products certainly more than others as we find that the razor is the one to go for and perhaps the wipes to give a miss.
