TAROT (2024)

A couple of college-aged young people are vacationing at a house in the Catskills.  They find a creepy deck of tarot cards!  A girl reads all of their fortunes, and they begin to die, each in a way foretold by the cards!

For the first young woman, the thirteenth draw of her reading is the High Priestess card.  Her fortune mentioned a “crushing blow.”  The group returns home from the vacation and she is alone in her dorm, in Boston, the spookiest of American cities!  The attic going to the ladder is pulled down, and when she goes to investigate she is spooked!  Then she falls down the ladder and lands on the floor.  The High Priestess slams the ladder down on her neck multiple times, killing her. 

The second dude’s draw included the Hermit, and his fortune mentioned “the wrong track.” After the first girl’s death, the friends are hanging out and mourning.  He walks another girl home, and then he continues on to the Haymarket “T” stop.  There, he is spooked, and he runs into a forbidden area, basically a rail yard like you might see in “Fallout 4” (2015).  The Hermit jump scares the dude and he falls into the path of an oncoming subway train.

The friends are freaking out.  They talk to the police.  Afterwards, they discuss their situation, and the young woman who performed the tarot card readings suspects that the readings are related to the deaths!  They rush to the internet to perform some research and find the name of a woman who writes about similar situations.  They drive to the woman, and she is Olwen Fouere, who we’ve seen recently in “Sea Fever” (2019), “All You Need is Death” (2023), and “The Watchers” (2024).  She explains that she once performed a reading with the same cards, and all her friends died.  She did not perform a reading for herself, so she lived.  She tells the story of the "Astrologer," a woman from 18th century Hungary.  She was a skilled tarot card reader, but she foretold the death, in childbirth, of the wife of a nobleman.  The fortune came to pass, the nobleman accused the woman of witchcraft, and he killed her daughter.  The Astrologer performed “a dark ritual” binding her soul to her tarot cards, resulting in her death.  The nobleman and his buddies all died soon after, based on the readings she performed for them.  Her tarot card became cursed!

The friends are driving home, and the car dies on a bridge.  A girl’s fortune included the Hanged Man.  She freaks out and flees the car, but the Hanged Man catches her in a noose and yanks her to her death.

Now there are only four young people left.  Three of them resolve to return to the vacation house to find and destroy the tarot cards, but one dude, the funny guy, decides to go hide instead.  He goes back to campus, but he is spooked by the Fool, who wears a mask and does weird body horror movements.  The funny guy rides the elevator to the top floor of his dorm, he is spooked, and the lights in the elevator turn red.  The Fool appears right next to him and lunges at him with huge sharp teeth!

The final trio arrive at the house.  They find the tarot cards and dump them in a fire, but they do not burn!  They call Olwen Fouere, who arrives to help.  She attempts to perform a ceremony “to separate the Astrologer’s spirit from the cards,” but the Astrologer is there!  She reads the future for Fouere, and her final card is the “Six of Swords,” which feature a lot of swords.  “I’m sorry,” Fouere says, and she is yanked away.  The kids later see that she has been stabbed to death…with a lot of swords!

The trio run away.  One girl is separated and runs into the basement, where she emerges on a stage, with the Magician!  She tries to hide in a big box, but the Magician wheels the box out onto stage and, in an extended scene, cuts her in half, as magicians do.  Her friends hear her death screams through the vent. 

We now have Final Girl and Final Guy.  Final Guy is chased by the Devil, and Final Girl is chased by Death.  Final Guy is being dragged into an inferno by some devils.  Final Girl has the (actually brilliant) idea to perform a tarot card reading…for the Astrologer!  She completes the task and ends up with the Death card for the Astrologer.  Final Girl talks to her a bit about accepting loss (because her own mother died of cancer).  Final Girl says, “Fate doesn’t have to be a curse,” she says.  “We can choose to let go.”  The Astrologer is swallowed up into a tempest, and the cards are destroyed. 

The final duo walk away from the house, and they are picked up by the funny guy!  Turns out, he survived his ordeal when a friend opened the elevator door just in time.  But we learn that in a quick in-credits scene.  Before that, Final Guy says, “We changed fate.”  “Fuck fate,” Final Girl says.

This was a nice effort, but it’s mostly meh.  The characters were pleasant enough (a nice change from the usual crop of assholes), but they’re without personality and uninteresting.  The monster designs weren’t bad.  They were nicely evocative and creepy, but the kills were bland, sanitized, a result of the PG-13 rating.  I did like the tarot card designs, and the credits provided an extended look at more of them.  I would probably buy a deck (for fun).  Other than that, this movie is forgettable.

ALMOST birthday problems

listening short ride in a fast machine, john adams. i listen to a lot of instrumental stuff throughout my workday and there are only so many video game soundtracks i actually like.

this version is nearly a full two minutes shorter than the version on spotify i liked best. this piece looks fucking exhausting to both play and conduct, and the comments are full of conductors complaining about it lmao

read the wiki page like “okay what is this About is it an experimental piece about spaceships bc that’s what i want this fluttering-adrenaline-pulse piece to be about” no! it’s about eighties sports cars. it does not sound like it should be about eighties sports cars. 

i know just enough about classical music to be dangerous. i know what i like, which is when people incorporate folk music into their style (copland, dvorak), music featured in the barbie ballet movies (tchaikovsky), and a very small number of bach chamber works (one specific doctors’ waiting room music). this doesn’t really fit into any of those and sounds more like a movie score to my (bad, deaf) ear but it’s a pretty cool four-minutes-and-change.

the author asks this question and then kind of shrugs at it. this was a weird one! i’ve been to salem quite a few times. it’s a very charming little town on the sea with good nightlife, you can take the train into boston, the rhythm and flow and concerns of a tourist town are very familiar to me, it’s almost the perfect place for me to live, and i could never ever live there bc 1) money and 2) i find it absolutely fucking insufferable in large doses. i think the intersection between queer people and astrology/witchcraft/woo is fascinating, and it probably is a great way for some people to reclaim the concept of religion, but please god get all that as far away from me as possible. i like nondenominational spookiness and vampires and that’s about it.

it’s very difficult for me personally to think of witchcraft without thinking of both queer people and terfs. it’s odd that the author did not address this, nor did she mention that many of the “witches” killed were people of color. the author does point out that hey! it is super weird to disneyify a place where atrocities were committed! but she also flinched away from any real criticism about the modern white witchy movement trying to make itself as palatable as possible though commercialization. except in a very oblique way, bc all her interviews were with people who have a vested commercial interest in “Witches Are Nice And Friendly Actually”

romance/otome/dating games have consistently been some of the most fucked up games ive ever played, for reasons of Genre that could be several theses on its own. i appreciate the content warnings at the top, but even though this is not a game specifically tailored for a fanbase (i think it would work better without the name customization, actually) it does have a beautiful tragic sadperson whomst i expect to see some cosplay/fanart/fanworks for. there isn’t a good gender-neutral term for sadboy. bear with me.

inside baseball industry musings, my company does not rep them, all thoughts my own &tc: i cannot immediately find a ton of info about this studio, other than they're canadian. this is odd, bc finding info about games and studios is literally my job, esp bc they are also doing all the Indie Marketing things right EXCEPT for social media- releasing a free teaser like this, doing episodic drops with completely different SKUs so they keep getting fresh eyeballs, and a very high-effort and polished art style. they also have a very well thought out steam page that properly sets expectations and gives a good teaser of the game. their thumbnail is fucking killer and drew me in in the first place, and the whole thing (aside from one! one singular typo in the actual game itself! very forgivable!) is very polished. this team knows what they’re about. i'm sad nobody's really talking about this, but we are experiencing an absolute glut of games right now.

it doesn’t really look like anything i’ve seen before, which is always very exciting. it’s got flashes of dry humor that i like very much and i probably will pick up the full game when it’s out in feb (ep 2 is out but i like consuming completed things bc i Never remember to come back to them)

making hey remember this bad boy? finally washed it on cold/delicate/with woolite and on the extreme-low-heat dryer setting, then absolutely crisped it again on high for a bit bc i am quite paranoid about moths and carpet beetles. i would like to hang this on the wall adjacent to my work desk bc there’s been a bad echo on all my calls lately, but this blanket is very hard to look at. so it is folded up small and thrown artfully over our maroon futon and they kind of cancel each other out.

the fringe is in okay shape, i started combing it out before realizing that’s an insane thing to do and i only have a limited number of hours on this here earth. the thing i DID do was reattach the fringe in the seven or eight places it was peeling off. i think it was originally machine stitched on, which makes sense. although if you hand-embroidered and hand-quilted a blanket of this size, a little bit of straight stitch is going to be Nothing to you.

born to a luxury hotel owner and personal chef, stella was in a life of privilage from the very beginning. when she expressed an interest in pursuing entertainment as a child, her parents set her up for pageants, modeling and eventually, acting classes. they gave her all the opportunities a child could have, and while the boston scene wasn’t quite as intense as those in new york or los angeles, her name was soon being mentioned from producers who could actually do something with her.  it wasn’t long until she was able to snag a role in a small indie film that suddenly exploded - her entire career is thanks to fly over, a drama that took over cannes, sundance and more. offers started rolling in afterwards, and when she managed to land the leading role of a new hbo show crash - a ‘friends’ meets ‘sex and the city’ for the current day 20 something - she knew she’d truly made it.  now, she works on movies in between seasons of the show she’s been on for almost six years, and travels in her free time as often as possible. she has a dog named bear she takes with her everywhere, and visits her mother and brother in boston whenever she gets a chance. while she seems to have everything and then some, there’s always something missing - stella is, ultimately, a romantic, and hopes she can somehow find her one true love, even in the chaos and misery that often accompanies fame.

the   berkowitz   family name has long been one that holds prestige & power . among the 1% for over a century . they are a prominent banking family that has had their hands in the pots of nearly every big banking company across the nation . coming into the united states after word broke of the california gold rush back in 1849 , the berkowitz brother’s were of the lucky few to acquire pounds of gold by the thousands . later founding what would become a leading investment bank known as berkowitz capital . the generations to follow would capitalize on the head start given to them by the two brothers . expanding the family company as well as the knowledge of the family name through heavy involvement in politics alongside the kennedy’s . since as early as 1953 there has always been a berkowitz family member actively appointed to a political role ( governor , senator , representative , us ambassador , etc ) . although the families roots within the states are documented in the capital of california , as generations went on they made their way over to the east coast , with most of the family members now residing in southern florida . 

the   rachelson   family is a prominent political family . synonymous with power & eloquence . with their rise initially taking place in the british parliament . many escaped to england from germany between 1933-1935 . they hadn’t settled into the states until jocelyn rachelson ( jalissa’s maternal grandmother ) was appointed the united kingdoms ambassador to the united states in 1987 . the rachelson’s have since had heavy involvement in the us government , both behind the scenes and at the forefront . much of the rachelson family have stayed within the european union ( germany & poland ) as well as england . although the few that followed jocelyn to the states now reside in washington dc and the tri-state area .

henry & austen had met through their mutual friends . it didn’t take long before the two became a rather public couple , a supercouple if you would ( similar to that of a brangelina of the 1% ) . although they’d met in new york the two decided that when it was time to start a family they wanted to move to hilton grove , an island austen had eyed for years . instead they found themselves moving down to fort lauderdale where henry had grown up . before they knew it , they were three kids deep in settling down in fort lauderdale . austen’s anger from never wanting to build a life in florida started to tumble into the relationship & the daily life of the family & so in an effort to recover the marriage henry agreed to moving the family up to hilton grove , where they have resided ever since .

jalissa was born the second of three children and oh boy does she suffer from middle child syndrome , riddled with a envy and a need to be in the mix . the berkowitz household , although , from the outside looking in looked like a fabulous family life was anything but . jalissa , like her siblings , was born on a pedestal & what came attached with that was even higher expectations from her parents . her parents found a way to be extremely authoritarian & uninvolved all at the same time . they were very dismissive if you disappointed them & everything jalissa did seemingly did just that .

for a long time she was obsessed with getting her parents approval , she’d turned life into a silent competition between herself & her siblings . she befriended only the people her parents approved of , did all the events they asked her to do , did everything she could to excel academically & only dated people who were of benefit to her parents ( people who’s parents where also in high places ) . 

during highschool she joined the model un , debate team , and soccer team . if it were up to jalissa & not her parents she’d probably had joined the cheerleading team but her mother would never let that fly . it was too “ self indulgent “ to fit the family brand ( if only she’d known what would be coming years later lol ) .

it wasn’t until she was seventeen that she started to deviate from her parents wishes . of course , the catalyst to this was a boy , one her parents hadn’t really approved of but jalissa was completely head over heels for him . he really helped her boost her confidence to be her own person ? and not allow her parents to treat her like a puppet . with his encouragement she started her youtube channel , something she’d wanted to do for years but her mother had shot down the idea anytime jalissa brought it up . it was once again too “ self indulgent ” . the channel known as callmejalissa was an outlet for her , talking to a camera was the most heard she’d felt in seventeen years of her life . and god she knew that was hella sad . she really grew to view her subscribers as family & by the time her channel was brought to her parents attention ( more like her mothers , her dad had found her channel just four months after she’d made it and promised not to tell her mother so long as she was smart about what she posted ) she was about to turn eighteen and there wasn’t much they could do to stop her from doing it .

at eighteen she’d graduated highschool salutatorian with offers from university of pennsylvania & brown university . in all honesty she didn’t wnat to go to college , she saw it as a complete waste of her time . it wasn’t like she was going to do anything with the degree anyways . it would simply be a point of bragging for her parents at events & at this point she really could care less about them being able to brag to their friends . she knew she had to play along though , because this was the same year she was going to receive her first half of her trust fund ( a whoopin 500m , yes her trust fund in total will be 1b her parents are grossly wealthy guys ) so she bamboozled ? her parents , promising she’d committed to attending penn just so they’d allow for the money to be released to her account . she moved out of the house , literally moving into a house of her own a couple blocks from her parents house & claimed she was living in pennsylvania for college . we stan a sneaky binch .

two months later her parents were at her front door , though , ready to give her an ear full . her mother basically disowned her at this point . telling her how every year jalissa found a new way to be a bigger disappointment . her dad kind of played good cop , like he normally would because her mother often dug into her pretty deeply . to the point where any insecurity ( even though with the way she carries herself you’d never think she has any ) she has stems from something her mother has said / called her in the past . if henry berkowitz had a soft spot , it was certainly jalissa , it that had only grown clearly with the harsher austen became on the girl .

a few months before her nineteenth birthday a sex tape was released of jalissa cheating on her boyfriend at the time . it was a drunken mistake she’d made around the time of her mother basically disowning her , but that explanation did suffice for her boyfriend who inevitably broke things off with her . although this was a horrific time she’d received an abundance of offers to film more tapes . it was enticing to say the least . she was someone who loved intercourse but also had this deeply rooted desire to get back at her mother ? and what better way to do so then to something so far left from what her mother was about . this was next level disappointment in the eyes of austen berkowitz . the only thing that made sense ( in her mind ) was to dive head first into the porn industry .

like you’d expect her parents had a fit when they found out about her new career choice . although her internet fame had soared to new heights and her youtube & instagram followers were loving every second of this move . her mom was currently serving as governor and has since not been able to get elected in the political world since jalissa became one of the top porn stars around . they basically blacklisted her & jalissa feels no remorse , she’s gone so far as telling her mother “ sucks to be shunned , huh? ” .

although it took her dad a while to come around , he cares far too much to shut her out . 

not to long after jalissa & her best friend started their podcast tickets to our downfall , it’s a mix of call her daddy & the basement yard , basically two besties talking on a level that most people wouldn’t want to leave the privacy of their own space , giving advice , hoe tricks , and telling funny stories of their past . it a total hit & one of jalissa’s favorite things to do .

she live sin the same house she has since she was eighteen . she lives on her own with three dogs and a cat . she absolutely hates being alone and so maggie ( a tan corgi puppy ) , louis ( a  yellow lab puppy ) , humphrey ( a chocolate lab ) , and cedric ( a orange scottish fold ) are her babies that keep her sane in her big ole home .

as you can tell jalissa is chaotic , impulsive , reactive , and overall just searching for attention . she doesn’t care if the attention she receives is for the wrong reason or not , as long as she’s getting it . despite this she’s a good person ? i promise . she’s very friendly , loves a good joke & having a good time . very fun loving . she’s the type of person to try and bring up everyone else’s mood even when she isn’t feeling 100% herself . she’s loyal to those she deems are loyal to her . sometimes she’s bad a seeing who is actually loyal to her though & will be disloyal to someone who actually has her back ? oops . she’s definitely not the type to sugar coat anything for you , she tells it like it is & refuses to apologize if that hurts your feelings . if you cross her ? i’ll be praying for you . she’s the type to fuck your s/o , tell your boss some wild story about you & dump alcohol over your head at an event all in the matter of a week . don’t get her going , she’s absolutely relentless . with that said she’d very affectionate ... ? you can catch her hugging up on whoever is next to her at all times . touch is her love language , because lord knows she’s no sweetheart . she hates the stereotype of porn stars / internet personalities being ditzy , although she didn’t attend university she was accepted into two ivy leagues based off her academic abilities alone . the girl is intelligent & enjoys having a clever conversation from time to time .

What’s the best/funniest “autocorrect” that has happened to you/in your phone? I’ve had a lot of those, but I can’t think of one at the top of my head and I don’t feel like spending much time thinking about it right now.

Abercrombie, American Eagle, or Aeropostale for clothes? I used to shop at Aeropostale sometimes. Abercrombie and American Eagle are too overpriced. I bought one hoodie from Abercrombie, and it was on sale in the kid’s department lol. It fit, so hey.
