Tomb Raider Reloaded Blasts Onto Mobile This Month
CDE Entertainment and Emerald City Games have finally revealed the release date of the anticipated free-to-play roguelike arcade adventure Tomb Raider Reloaded, which falls exactly on Lara Croft’s birthday, February 14th! The game will make its way to Apple and Android mobile devices, as well as Netflix’s own games service, in which subscribers will be able to play without any ads or in-app purchases.
Alongside the announcement, the team shared a brand new trailer featuring our beloved heroine in cinematic action sequences and snippets of gameplay footage.
youtube
Tomb Raider Reloaded takes players on an action-filled adventure as they jump into the boots of groundbreaking hero Lara Croft on her swan-diving, cliff-climbing, back-flipping quest to obtain the ancient Scion artefact, clearing ever-changing rooms filled with new and familiar enemies as well as hazardous traps and puzzles. Along the way, they’ll acquire run-specific boosts alongside permanent rewards, like XP modifiers, runes that improve Lara’s stats, and manuals used to unlock and upgrade her outfits, such as her fan-favorite bomber jacket.
As players progress through each level, they can stack perks to enhance Lara’s abilities, and even craft weapons to upgrade her arsenal.
As a love-letter to the franchise, the game is set to delight old and new fans of the saga as it features iconic Tomb Raider locations, namely the City of Vilcabamba, the Lost Valley, and St. Francis’ Folly; memorable characters, from the likes of Winston, Kurtis Trent, Anaya Imanu, and Werner Von Croy; along with artefacts, outfits, and more.
Also making a return is the lovely Keeley Hawes, the British actress that lent her voice to our adventurer in the LAU trilogy and the two spin-offs—Guardian of Light and Temple of Osiris. If that wasn’t enough, it was revealed back in the 25th anniversary celebrations that the legendary voice actresses Shelley Blond (Tomb Raider), Judith Gibbins (Tomb Raider II, Tomb Raider III), and Jonell Elliott (The Last Revelation, Chronicles, The Angel of Darkness), will be reprising their roles as Lara and players would be able to chose their favourite between them all.
This connection to the series’ long-lasting legacy is reinforced by the game’s soundtrack, which includes orchestral recordings of classic Tomb Raider themes, spearheaded by musician Tina Guo—who made her solo debut in Peter Connelly’s The Dark Angel Symphony album.
Tumblr media
Tomb Raider Reloaded will be available worldwide on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Netflix Games Service on February 14th. For a limited time after launch, all players will receive an exclusive golden version of Lara’s iconic dual pistols, like the ones you can see above.

Happy 27th anniversary to Tomb Raider!
On the 25th of October, twenty seven years ago, a little game called Tomb Raider, featuring Lara Croft was released in Europe for the Sega Saturn, and changed gaming FOREVER!
The world was introduced to British archaeologist Lara Croft, who travels around the world searching for lost artifacts and infiltrating dangerous tombs and ruins. Lara Croft became a pop culture sensation. You probably can't fathom the amount of brand power and popularity she had in the late 90s (I can't either because I was a baby) but she was treated like an actual celebrity. Getting featured on non-gaming magazine covers, getting advertisement deals with brands like Lucozade, Visa, Seat, Jeep, Ducati and many others and even having her own publicist! She also technically toured with U2 as her visuals were heavily on their Pop Mart tour! She is the most successful woman to ever hit video games and every female video game protagonist created after her gets inspired and compared to her for good reason.
Exploration, solving puzzles, navigating hostile environments filled with traps, and fighting enemies are the three core pillars of the franchise, and although not credited as much as it should, the original game did tons to innovate 3D gaming (choke on a dick Mario 3D) and essentially jump started the action adventure genre, which it held a monopoly on until the Inception of Uncharted (which also died but Queen is still here).
Furthermore, various award winning actresses have been hired to portray Lara across various media, from Keeley Hawes and Camilla Luddington in the games, to Minnie Driver and, soon, Hayley Atwell in animated series to Oscar-winning Alicia Vikander and, perhaps more importantly, Angelina Jolie in films.
Not to discredit any of the other actresses, or Lara's own brand power before the 2001 film, but Angelina's portrayal has been ingrained in many people's minds and did a lot to both further boost Lara's own brand power, as well as permanently ingrain Angie as one of the prominent action heroines in Hollywood. It's no wonder tons of people dressing up as Lara or other media paying homages to Lara and Tomb Raider use Angie's all black outfit and French braid look from the first movie, neither of which are actually part of Lara's in-game look so far 🤣
Tumblr media
Although it stumbled a bit in the early 2000s, with games like Chronicles and Angel of Darkness tarnishing the brand, the game has been reimagined, both with a soft reboot in 2006 and a full scale one in 2013 and has continued to evolve and adapt to the industry, managing to stay relevant for almost three decades now! For this reason, Tomb Raider had sold over 95 million copies worldwide by 2022, while the entire franchise generated close to 1.2 billion dollars in revenue by 2002. The series has generally been met with critical acclaim, and Lara Croft has become one of the most recognisable video game protagonists, winning accolades and earning places on the Guinness World Records.
The future looks bright as we have a new animated series, a new game, a remaster of the original three games and a whole ass multiverse of media coming up, hopefully managing to please fans of all iterations of the games as well as the character herself.
Lara Croft has achieved mainstream media popularity like of which only a handful of other video game characters, like Sonic and Mario have only achieved. Her own individual brand power has consistently been a selling point for the series, but the games themselves continue to captivate the interest, and I hope to see them continue to succeed where others failed for many many more years to come!
Happy birthday Tomb Raider 🥳🎈😁

TR25 | Reimagined Covers: The Angel of Darkness
Back in February 2021, Crystal Dynamics debuted a special project that aimed to reimagine the box art of the mainline entries in the series. Each one features a different artist and their unique take on the game they were assigned with and is set to be released throughout the anniversary celebration.
For Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003), after a few setbacks, the team finally unveiled this stunning gold leaf and oil painting designed by the incredibly talented Stephanie Rew, an award-winning artist specialised in figurative painting who had her work displayed in various exhibitions across the world.
Below you can find what the artist had to say on the making of this piece and download it in various sizes so you can customize all of your devices.
Tumblr media
"When I was first approached to make this 25th anniversary artwork for Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, I felt the work needed to have the look of an icon. This stage in Lara’s story is a darker one and I felt that the fallen angel motif fitted the design perfectly.
I began by engraving the game’s symbol into the gesso before adding raised texture to define the cogs and wheels. I then laid 24ct gold leaf on top of the pattern and polished the gold to reveal the design. I added more detail with a jewellers’ punch and dry brush to create illusion of movement. I then started painting the figure in oil.
The portrait of Lara was a challenge, as painting a fictional character is very different from painting a model. I wanted her to look like the original Lara, with the wide set eyes and angular face, so a lot of tweaking went on to find the balance between a traditional oil portrait and a digital one. I added the black wings last and used blackbird wings as reference. I wanted to create the feeling of flight so added some loose feathers. The final designs of the symbol are painted in 24ct shell gold. The pattern surrounds her and begins to consume the whole figure, signifying the fusion between the game and the hero.
I am honoured to create this work of art for Crystal Dynamics to celebrate 25 years of Tomb Raider, as I loved playing it when it first was released. She has come a long way since then."
The team has also released a neat fan kit with the artwork packed with wallpapers, social assets and even a printable file for those who wish to revamp their cases. If you do so, please share them with us on social media by tagging @thecrofttomb and @tombraider in your posts along with #TR25!

25th Anniversary Tomb Raider Reimagined Box Art Prints
In celebration of 25 years of Tomb Raider, fans were given the opportunity to purchase the set of 15 prints of the reimagined box arts. They were created by legendary artists from around the world, such as Andy Park, Adam Hughes and Brenoch Adams and were released digitally throughout the year 2021, depending on the game's celebratory month. Each print is 11x17 inches, on uncoated stock paper.
As described on the Square Enix item listing page: 'Artists were chosen to ensure a diverse array of styles and were given full freedom to reimagine the box art, resulting in Lara Croft portrayed in comic, anime, whimsical, realistic, and surrealistic styles. No matter the genre or medium, as a pop-culture icon of 25 years Lara Croft is instantly recognizable throughout the art series'.
The proceeds from the sale was given to the charity, 'Girls Make Games', a cause that encourages more females to get into the games industry. This item went on sale on Lara's birthday in 2022, 14th February, and although it was planned to run for three weeks only, it was extended to a whole month, ending on 14th March. The prints were finally dispatched to customers on 12th May '22.
The sale was a print to order listing, so there is no leftover stock, and the window to purchase it from the official SE store is over. People have wasted no time in reselling them. On eBay, there are listings in the USA and France, with values of over $200 and €200.

August is Tomb Raider Legend month in the Crystal Dynamics 25th Tomb Raider anniversary celebration project and I couldn't be more excited
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Legend was the first ever Tomb Raider game I played so it will forever hold a very special place in my heart.
Lara's attitude, the fun controls, huge location variety, dozens of outfits to unlock added a lot of replay value.
It may be the shortest game in the series but to me it will always be the most impactful

During their 25th anniversary celebration last October, Crystal Dynamics announced that the Storyworld museum in Groningen, the Netherlands, would be hosting a special exhibition – “The World of Lara Croft – 25 Years of Tomb Raider” – which would detail the history of the Tomb Raider games and highlight Lara Croft’s impact on popular culture.
