More Tricks than Treats

Okay, I know I haven't been on here in a several days...life is super hectic as per usual! Anyway, here we are back with Lori for Spooky Day. I found her autonomously digging through her trash and that gave me an idea! What better day to go dumpster diving in the hopes we can find something valuable enough to pay bills!

Also, woohoo! Another wedding is in the works! And another break up it seems as well.

Yes! We can finally afford to pay bills! We've avoided the repo man for one more week at least! I got so into the game that I literally forgot to take pictures of Lori while she dumpster diving at the Sports Bar across town. But that's okay, after all that stinky work, she deserves a little fun.

Time for another date night! Hmm...I wonder who else is at the dance club tonight?

Tom Garrett!! Didn't see that one coming! I wonder if Wanda's going to order whatever Brooks is eating? And Angela must have needed a break from the twins. I have a feeling she hires babysitters a lot!

Oh boy! Not only have the Lum twins aged up, but there's a new little bundle of joy on the way for Simili and Gerald! Gosh I'm hoping it's not another twin situation, with so many babies being born, I don't know how St Bernie will be able to house the next generation!

Silver Palace to Mermaid's, 1956-2016

Silver Palace (1956), 32 Fremont St, Las Vegas. The casino was built in place of the W. R. Thomas building and had six different casinos names over its 60 years, aka Carousel Club, Gambler's Hall of Fame, Sundance West, Sally Sally's, and Mermaid's.

Silver Palace ('56-'64)

'54-55: The casino is planned in ’54. The W.R. Thomas building on this corner is deemed unsafe by the city and demolished in Jan. ’55. The casino also takes the place of Silver Cafe, closed Jan. ’55 after being sold to the casino group by owners Sui Mong Fong and Kim Fong.

'56: Silver Palace premiere opening is 5/25/56, with grand opening 6/8/56. Spinning Wheel Corp is the owner with over 20 licensees. Earl Snyder, president. Zick & Sharp, architect; Lee Linton, interior design. The casino is modern, with the city’s first escalator, casino, restaurant, and slot machines designed to resemble medieval castles. Signs by Heath Sign Co of Los Angeles. The casino is open only six months, closed by IRS, Nov. 30.

'58: Silver Palace reopens, 5/20/58, operated by Marion Hicks and parters of the Thunderbird. The restaurant is Louigi's Broiler.

'59: Silver Palace and Louigi's Broiler closed 6/30/59.

I agree that Jacob Elordi is a terrible fit for Heathcliff. Who would you personally like to see play the role 👀? I saw someone say Dev Patel and thought he'd be an interesting pick.

Firstly, I have to tell you that any adaptation of Wuthering Heights would need to be so intriguing to me that I forgot about the PBS Masterpiece Classics Wuthering Heights (2009) with Tom Hardy as Heathcliff, Charlotte Riley as Cathy, and Andrew Lincoln as Edgar Linton (and Burn Gorman as Hindley 1, stfu!!!). Tom and Charlotte had such intense chemistry that they've been married for a decade. Andrew is perfectly proper, doting, and pathetic in equal measures. Burn Gorman is Burn Gormaning. It's a miniseries that makes some big adaptational swings but carries the spirit of the thing all the way through and understands that the moors and the rain are main characters too.

Dev Patel is one of my Skins alum beloveds. He's incredibly talented, I'm always rooting for him. I don't think I've ever seen him give a Heathcliff-esque performance but I think he's got the range. Heathcliff is deeply othered in the books, by lack of decree and his dark features. Casting someone of Indian descent honors that better than other adaptations ever have! And hopefully there'd be a director informed and committed to understanding a dark romanticist metaphorical undertaking of what England was doing to India at the time the book was written and it should not be an excuse for hyperracism and violence (looking at you, Wuthering Heights 2011) so a greater issue here is that I don't believe Emerald Fennel has the range. I don't even think she has the audacity, I just think she isn't thinking.

A cut because I have to explain what Cathy and Heathcliff are as archetypes & why Margot and Jacob are such a bad fit before I even get into who I'd like to see acknowledging that

it's unacceptable at this point to make Heathcliff the white boy of the month and Wuthering Heights has more in common with The Crow than it does Bridgerton.

WHOEVER IT IS, they need to cast for chemistry and they need to cast people who are FERAL, and I want working class accents vs posh accents. Earnshaws are sort of a dying sub nobility (I don't know British class warfare terms ok) & Heathcliff is a refuge orphan who has to learn English as he goes from them. This is the only time in my life I've heard Margot Robbie was up for a role and said, "ain't no way." Marbot is incredibly, she has range, I think it's a shame when people limit her because she came out of puberty looking like a literal Barbie, I Tonya is a film of all time to me and she's the heart of it as a white trash feral child.

But Cathy is a different kind of feral and it needs to echo something raw in Heathcliff. Emily Brontë wrote a dark romance so goddamn hard that she accidentally invented intersectionality for white girls and also exposed that white girls get more opportunities for a privileged life than brown boys or people without a family name to trade on and that in chasing that you can be birth fodder and die anyway. Cathy dies at about 18-20 and is still one of the most REAL female characters of that entire period of literature and then Heathcliff just sort of rots inside of his own body for the next 15-20 years. Where is any of that Margot? I don't think anywhere.

Jacob Elordi cuts a fine tragic figure in the background of Priscilla (he did incredible work in that film) but otherwise he could be replaced by a broom with a sporty haircut in any of his other roles. And maybe he needs something to rise to the occasion to... but Heathcliff should be a POC actor, should have a cobbled together accent that reflects his background, his changing station, and his resentment of all of it, and needs to be someone we connect to despite how horrific he becomes, from age 10-40 roughly, with half of that ideally being the same actor. I don't see that for Jacob.

Dev Patel is in his 30s. So if I'm thinking of other men in their 30s who can reflect those Heathcliff traits, possibly Andrew Koji or Amar Chadha-Patel. But also... there's probably a 25 year old POC actor out there who would do an easier job of aging up or down and could really use Wuthering Heights as the foundation of their career. Directors need to get back to finding a 20 something to raise via the screen, I s2g.

cathy is trickier. i actually think kaya scodelario was a pretty solid choice for her! even though she has the slightest hint of iphone face syndrome, she does look like a bratty, impertinent only child who only wants to gallop off into the mist and thinks the world should bend to her every whim. but it has been 13 years since that adaptation, and if we want to find someone closer to catherine's age for a movie now, then maybeeee hannah dodd? the new girl who plays francesca bridgerton? i feel like the main characteristics when i imagine catherine earnshaw are that she looks beautiful, mean, and sickly lolll. although hannah is a natural blonde and her face gives me more 40s-50s period drama vibes than gothic lit, her sarah chapman in enola holmes is the vibe i would go for

as for the other characters i think edgar linton should be played by that dude who did president snow in the prequel. tom blyth? someone who's diametrically opposed to dev patel obviously. and nelly should be played by an actress who feels very Mom, even though warmth is pretty much the last thing any of these people should emit to fit into this universe. i have no ideas here but yeah mom vibes are important - she's the narrator, the person who invites the reader into the story, so she's quite literally birthing these characters.

I’m rereading Wuthering Heights and am trying to watch all the adaptations. My favourites so far are the 2009 miniseries, the 1978 miniseries and the 1970 movie with Timothy Dalton (I never really liked the one with Ralph Fiennes)! Oh Cathy, why did you betray your own heart?💔 Anyway this is roughly how I imagined the characters:

Maybe Tom Whelan gets his footballing strength from longer hair?

Who knows, but whatever it might have been, Weymouth were good value for this win over Boreham Wood. Our third in our last 6 home matches (Welling and Aveley being the other two) with one draw against Hornchurch and a couple of defeats to Bath and Weston.

Progress indeed, but in all likelihood too little too late. But I have given up predicting this Terras team and our season.

The game started with a red hot home side carving out chance after chance. Tom Bearwish missed the first of them from 6 yards out. His contact wasn't firm enough to direct the ball on target and it squirmed wide.

"I want to see that again" cried commentator Ben Ashelford. Bearwish wont!

It didn't matter as soon after some comical defending for a side chasing promotion with some Chuckle Brothers "to me to you" play saw Calvin Brooks smash in the opener before wheeling to the corner flag kissing the badge on his shirt.

The anticipated response from Boreham Wood didn't come and instead Mal Linton added a second with the sort of first touch Dennis Bergkamp would have been proud of. Two nil and an air of total disbelief around the BLS.

The visitors must have had the sort of telling off that turned their Managers face as pink as their kit, and they were much better in the second half.

They should have been down to ten men though when the referee only found a yellow for a last man grab on Linton.

Soon after Boreham Wood pulled one back and you feared for a side at the bottom trying to hold on against a side at the top.

The onslaught did come but thanks to some last ditch defending and some wayward finishing Weymouth held on that showed that we are still fighting and we can get up the table.

The late win for Enfield against Truro was a proper blow to our survival chances, but we aren't talking about that at the minute.. we are just enoying three more points and some progress.

Don't tell the hates but I let out a loud cheer of "FFFFFFFFFFFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYY" at full time.

Could he be the man to finally get three or four years to do this job properly and build the club up for sustained success?
