So, you're old, (no hate but it's true) so that must mean you were on the internet during the AOL days. Which websites are good to post fanfics too? I realise not everyone uses FFN, so should I also upload them to Tumblr? DA? Facebook? How did you start your internet career? Ao3 needs an invite >>
Lmao I'm not even 30 yet, damn 😂 (no offence taken btw, I did get a good laugh from that start to the question though)
While I was technically around then, my home town was a good 10-15yrs behind the rest of the world in regards to the internet, so we didn't get reliable/constant internet access at my house until I was in high school so I missed a lot of that era - and even when we did get it, it was expensive, so my sister and I were only allowed to use it occasionally.
I got my start on Deviantart, but I'm not sure if I can still recommend it - they got bought out a few years ago and have been... not great, ever since. The brought in a lot of changes which drove away pretty much all of the userbase outside of scammers, crypto-bros and AI "artists". I don't know how good they are for writers now but I can't imagine they're much better. I still log on and post occasionally but unless you have nostalgia for DeviantArt, I don't think it's worth it, not for new users. Inkblot might be a good alternative though - they specialise in art but do allow you to upload written works too! I never had any luck there but I know a few others who have, so it's worth checking out.
I'd also recommend against Facebook. I know there are writing communities there, but most of the ones I found were a much older demographic - the few that weren't were not exactly welcoming to anyone who wasn't a straight/cis, white, able-bodoed man. I also know facebook has policies that allow them to use your content without permission - probably not something you need to worry about for fanfiction since it's usually based on existing work but still worth being aware of.
I haven't done this myself, but my partner used to post fan fiction to Reddit for a bit and had some luck there - you just have to find the right subreddits for the fandom you want to create for. some are more active than others, but I know there's a fairly active community there if you know where to look. They can be pretty brutal though, so be prepared.
Honestly, outside of AO3, Tumblr and FFN seem to be the two big platforms today for fan fiction and related content. I'm pretty out of the loop though, I haven't been heavily involved in fandom communities in years so take all this with a grain of salt (if anyone has better advice please feel free to leave it). Honestly, since leaving Deviantart I've jumped around between a lot of different platforms, basically just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what stuck lol. Tumblr, Mastodon and Tik Tok were the three where I got the most traction for my stuff, but Tumblr is the only one where my fandom-related stuff consistently gets any sort of traction.
Also is the Ao3 invite a new thing? I could have sworn I had an account but don't remeber getting an invite lol. Maybe I'm thinking of something else.... fuck I do sound old lmao

this ^report is from 2020. However- much news has since been reported about the staggering increase of wealth 'at the top' since COVID began.
"...Canadian capitalism is exposed in the study as an oligarchic social order.
According to the PBO, the share of wealth held by the top one percent of Canadians is 25.6 percent. This is almost double the estimate of 13.7 percent given by Statistics Canada."
@allthecanadianpolitics good resource article here.

1. Wear a mask but not just any mask in public spaces. 2. Focus on reducing or stopping transmission in your community. 3. Keep your children out of schools this January unless strict precautions are in place. 4. If you are sick, quarantine yourself for a full 10 days. Do not follow the new CDC isolation rule. 5. Advocate for and use rapid tests. 6. Don’t lower your guard just because many public health officials have characterized symptoms of Omicron as ‘mild.’ 7. Prepare for systems to break down and the vulnerable to bear the brunt.

Event Info
WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 Official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way you’d like. They are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you don't have to include the exact wording into your work). Additionally, there are 3 prompts for each theme.  These are optional suggestions and can be used in conjunction with the theme, or as options/alternatives.  We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks.
Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, and photo/video/audio edits. Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (i.e. you don’t have to do ALL the prompts if you don’t want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.
When uploading Whumptober content to your blog, be sure to tag the with:
#whumptober2020 …..(the event tag)
#no.1, #no.2, #no.3, …..(theme number)
#bruised, #stabbed,  …..(the theme or specific prompt you chose)
#fandom or #OC
#medium …..(gifs, fic, podcast, art, etc.)
#teeth, #etc …..(trigger warnings & any additional tags. Keep in mind not to add “tw” in front but only use the word/trigger itself, because tumblr sucks)
#nsfw, #nsfwhump …..(only for nsfw content)
PLEASE BE DILIGENT WITH YOUR TAGGING. Only properly tagged posts are considered for archiving on the official @whumptober2020 blog. They must be tagged in the order above.
Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of participants in recent years, we cannot guarantee your work will be archived. A random selection of properly tagged posts from all genres will be reblogged each day.
Whumpers who produce content for 31 total theme days are considered event completionists and will be tagged in a masterpost at the end of the month.
Questions not addressed below can be directed to this blog as well.
Thanks for reading, and happy whumping!
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What kind of content can I make? Can it be NSFW?
This is a MIXED MEDIA event! You can write fic, post meta, doodle or paint, create a gif set or photo edit, link a song, or get crafty with video - anything goes. As for NSFW, make what you like, we just hope that you’ll tag your work accordingly so that others participating in the event can stay safe :)
Q. Do I have to do all 31 Days? Can I post early/late?
Participate as much or little as you like, and post whenever! Just be sure to tag your posts properly (ex. #no.11, #psych101). Combining prompts into one piece of work is okay, and posting late is as well so as long as it’s in October.
Q. What if I don’t understand a theme?
Send us an ask! We’re happy to help clarify. That said, the themes are entirely up for interpretation :)
Q. Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges?
Absolutely! That’s like shooting two whumpees with one bullet :)
Q. Can I upload/repost my whumptober content to other social media platforms?
Of course! We’ve created an AO3 Collection to archive any fics posted there. The archive can be accessed here. The blog is the official archive, so please respect the boundaries of any closeted whumpers in your social circle :)
Q. Can I use prompts to write a new chapter for an existing fic?
Yes
Q. An existing fic I am currently writing contains many of the Whumptober prompts, can I use it?
If you are actively writing this fic at the moment with the whumptober prompts in mind, yes. If it just conveniently checks the boxes, then please don’t. You can, however, add new chapters answering one or more of the prompts.
Q. What kind of characters can I write for?
Fandom characters, OC characters, human, furry, alien, cyborg, whoever you like.
Q. Can I use a prompt multiple times?
Yes,  but it only counts once
Q. If I’m not comfortable with one day's prompts can I use a prompt of a different day as a substitute and still be a completionist?
Yes, but please do not use a specific prompt twice. We have also created an alternate prompts list that you can draw from [here].
Q. Where can I post my work?
Post where and how you want. You don’t even have to (cross)post it to Tumblr. Just keep in mind if it’s not on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive.
Q. Can I start posting early?
You can, but this is an October event and wouldn’t it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? That being said, you can post early, but we won’t be reblogging any work predating October 1st.
Q. Do I have to finish a fic I started/can I post WIP’s.?
Yes you can post WIPs. And you’re not obligated to finish it in October for it to count towards being a completionist.
Q. Is co-writing allowed?
Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you :)
Q. Do I have to create 31 standalone pieces to be considered a completionist or can I write one continuous story?
One continuous story is fine.  The challenge is to write something for 31 prompts. If that’s spread over 31 fics or just one, you are still considered a completionist. (The same goes for every other media you choose.)
Q. Is there a min/max limit on word count?
There is no limit
Q. Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many?
No limit and combine as many as you’d like.
Q. Is a hc/angst focus ok?
Of course!
Q. What’s considered nsfw?
See this post
Q. What's whump?
See this post
Q. My interpretation of the prompt isn't whumpy at all, does that count?
No, sorry, but keep in mind that whump [see definition] is something very nuanced and different for everyone and emotional whump/angst is just as much part of it, as is physical whump and torture. So before you dismiss your idea, think about this.
Q. Can I start working on the prompts before October?
Absolutely! That’s why we posted the prompts a month in advance. We recognise how difficult it can be creating for 31 days in “real time”.
Q. How do I tag triggers?
tw at the end of the word, ex. emeto tw
Q. Do I have to use your tags?
Yes, if you want your work archived on the blog. If not, feel free to use whatever tags you want.
Q. Does combining prompts count towards completion?
Yes
Q. Can we @ you?
Yes but we mostly rely on the whumptober2020 tag
Q. Is there anything we are absolutely not allowed to write?
There are no rules, just be sure to properly tag your trigger warnings. And keep in mind Tumblr’s policies if you are posting it here (or the policies of whatever site you use).
Q. Where can I go for brainstorming help?
Here on Discord
Q. My characters are minors, is that ok?
Yes, but as with everything else, tags are your best friend.
Q. Can I cross post on other blogs?
Yes, multiple platforms and blogs are perfectly acceptable. You can also post different works to different accounts under different names, without posting them everywhere at once.
Note: This is a creation challenge, please don’t repost your old work under our tags (unless it’s been changed or edited for the event).

Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with VivWiley
VivWiley has X-Files stories at more archives than I could list, but you can find the biggest collection (30 stories) at AO3. She's been prolific and around the fandom for a long time. I've recced some of my favorites of her stories here before, including Autumn's Threshold and Equilibrium. Big thanks to VivWiley for doing this interview.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
It does and it doesn’t.  As someone who is always discovering new shows and new fandoms, I know that one of the first things I do is go hunting for the related fic.  I love the ways that fanfic can fill in missing gaps, give us other POVs, and just generally help us see characters that we love (or are growing to love) in new lights. The X-Files, in particular, left so many freaking plot holes and jumps in logic, that I suppose it’s logical that people newly discovering TXF would gravitate to the fic.
What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?
First, I should say that my “fandom” experience was really limited to the fanfic for TXF.  I didn’t get involved in discussions about the actors, the show runners, etc. Nor did I go to any of the conventions.  But, from the fanfic experience, I remain astonished by how many smart, funny, wonderful women I met (sorry, guys, I know you were out there, but I mostly didn’t get to know you), and how many of them are still close friends. My life would be infinitely less interesting and rich without all those friendships.
I also took away from that experience a confidence in my own creativity that I didn’t previously have.  I have done a great deal of professional writing throughout my career – policies, reports, protocols – but TXF fic writing allowed me to exercise a whole other part of my brain and heart.  It was fun and also felt like another way of learning and building a skill set I’d lacked.
Finally, I say that it was an early exposure for me to both the good and ill that online communities can foster.  There so many amazing acts of kindness and support.  One of my friends organized the Beta Readers Circle, a group of volunteer fic editors who would read and help you with stories on everything from grammar to “is this character acting in character” questions.  I both used and volunteered with the BRC. On the flip side, some of the discussion threads on the email lists could get a bit ugly.  Forerunner to the comment threads on today’s posts. So, humanity in a nutshell, right?
Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?
I initially discovered XF fic through a Washington Post article that was trying to drum up interest in the World Wide Web (as it was then talked about).  Every week, they featured a list of “hey you might find this cool/interesting” sites, and one week one of the sites they listed was the Gossamer archive.  I dove in and emerged utterly hooked.  I also discovered one of the early fic mailing lists (the name of which now escapes me), and from there I began sending feedback, which allowed me to start building relationships with authors, etc.  I later joined other mailing lists like Scullyfic, Sparky’s Doghouse, etc. I never connected with atxc or the message boards, really.
What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?
The characters! Particularly Scully, at first.  It was clear from almost the beginning that the “story arc” (or the notion that there actually was an arc) was pure fiction, but I loved the relationships between the characters, the nuances that so many of them had, and the interplay of the notion of skeptic-believer could have.  And, of course, later on, Skinner was a personal favorite. [Lilydale note: VivWiley wrote a number of really great fics featuring Skinner.]
What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?
In many ways I think about TXF and TXF fandom in the same way I think about fond memories from high school or college.  Something that helped shape who I am today, in ways that aren’t always straight-forwardly apparent.  I still don’t really get involved (or care TBH) about the lives of the actors, the politics of the show construction, etc. I keep in touch with a large number of fandom alumni, and we will still occasionally reference the show, but our real-life connections have long-since overtaken TXF as our common denominator.
Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
I read and wrote in several other fandoms post-XF, but nothing ever grabbed me in the same way, and I certainly never found the kind of real community that I did through XF.
Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?
I think I’m drawn to characters who are human – flawed, nuanced, neither purely good nor purely evil – and who are ultimately driven by higher principle or purpose, even as they make mistakes along the way. From early days, King Arthur was a particular favorite, as are Raederle from the Riddle Master of Hed series (Patricia McKillip), Sam Vines (Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series), and Codi Noline (Animal Dreams, Barbara Kingsolver).
Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?
I did watch the most recent reboot/seasons of XF (and try not to think of them too much as I don’t need that kind of stress).  I do think about Mulder, Scully and Skinner on occasion.  Sometimes when the news reports something particularly weird or absurd, I wonder how Mulder and Scully would react to that, or amuse myself by thinking about how Skinner would be clenching his jaw and subtly undermining the current misuse of federal law enforcement resources.
Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?
I still read a lot of fic.  I kind of cycle through fandoms.  I read a lot of Marvel stuff, but have gone through other fic cycles.  I tend to find an author I like and then follow them into other fandoms.  That is, if I can find characters and stories in those fandoms that call to me.
Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?
I’m a really old school XF ficcer, so some of the folks who drew me into the genre were writers like Madeleine Partous, Parrotfish, Meredith, MustangSally, Rivka, etc.
There are so, so many other writers and authors I could mention, so I think I’ll just stick to some of my early favs.
What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?
In XF, my favorite is Equilibrium.  It was the most plotting I’d done, and one where I wrote from several POVs and where I had to really let the characters tell the story. In order to avoid spoilers, I’ll just say that there was a moment where a character did something I thought was really stupid, and I actually quit writing the story for about a week during which I argued with the character.  Then I had to go back and just let the story unfold. It’s the only time I’ve ever actually shed tears while writing a scene, but at the end of the day (end of the story?) it was the correct decision for the story I was writing.
Of other fandoms in which I’ve written, I think Fieldstripping (Farscape) and Gravity is not Responsible for your Fall (Firefly/Serenity) are ones where I felt I got it most “right.”
Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?
I actually have a long Skinner-related story that I’ve been threatening to write for about 10 years.  I have it 80% outlined and a very clear picture of the first and last scenes…. I just need to find the energy and focus to sit down and start writing.  I think I finally tracked down all my old fic and it’s posted up to AO3.
What's the story behind your pen name?
Which one?  Ha!  I’ve had a few.  Viv Wiley is a weird one – it just sort of came to me while driving one day.  Not entirely sure where it came from, just settled into my brain while at a stoplight in Northern Virginia (where I was living at the time).  I ultimately consolidated all my fic under that name.
Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?
Some friends and family know.  I’m judicious in who I tell.  I think people find it surprising, and of course, up until 5 years ago or so, I’d have to explain what fanfic is to most folks.  Now it’s so mainstream that I think if I were to tell someone new about it they wouldn’t be that surprised.
Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?
Everything is on AO3 under VivWiley
Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?
At the end of the day, what I care about is stories.  I think about the Doctor Who quote:  We’re all stories in the end, just make it a good one.  I am so grateful for all the nooks, crannies, and giant chasms of plot holes that the XF writers left for us to fill in.  Through that filling in, I discovered so many other wonderful stories, and wonderful writers and people.

Scott’s Departure
Friday was a bad dream I still have not been able to wake up from.
I haven’t written about Scott much on here anymore, and I have been less active on tumblr anyway. but now I need this site right now to process some very heavy feelings.
The last time I had previously seen Scott was mid-March. I was standing in his office at the end of the day as he packed up his laptop and anything else he needed. I hadn’t been approved to work from home yet. I was down about him having to work from home, but he told me to message him any time. I said I would. I messaged him a day or two later, telling him I’d also be working from home for the time being. My work gave me a laptop to take home. My first day working from home he messaged me to ask how I liked working from home. I told him I hated it and he said hopefully he’d get to see me in a week or two. It was the only time during these past 7 months the he reached out and messaged me. At one point during this time, I got annoyed that I was always the one reaching out. I felt like we had gotten to a point in our relationship, whatever it was, that I wouldn’t always be doing all the work anymore. So I didn’t talk to him for two months. Then I missed him too much and started messaging him again. He actually became more receptive to me reaching out and was always quicker to answer me. It was nice.
I missed him a lot these past months. Eventually I got approved to come in for 2 half days every week, which eventually turned into 3 full days. Scott had come to the office twice for stuff; the first time I was in the office but had left before he came (I didn’t know he was coming) and the second time was a day I was going to go in but decided not to. The office has been strange without anyone really there. Even weirder without Scott there. I have had to go out to the boxes in the warehouse a few times, and I turn around and Scott’s office is dark. I have to go and grab a water jug, and I look into his office but he isn’t standing there smiling and waving at me. My heart ached so much that I began to feel like we’d never go back to normal again. I hate that I was right.
About 2 weeks ago, Scott put his away message on for about 2 hours in the middle of the day. My first thought was, “He’s interviewing.” I shook off those thoughts because I absolutely did not want to entertain the thought of losing him. I had this worry pop up before, that Scott might leave, and I was wondering if I manifested it, or if it was something deep inside of my soul that was trying to prepare me for what was coming. I don’t know for sure, and I don’t know if Scott was interviewing that day or what, but he has a new job now and he won’t ever be back.
Friday, I see Scott go offline about 45-50 minutes before the work day ends. I don’t think too much into it; it is a Friday so maybe he just logged off early. Still, something was bothering me, but I had no idea what. I stayed 10 minutes late to make up the rest of the time I had missed due to an emergency vet visit with Weasley (he’s totally okay). My longing to see Scott was stronger than ever. I literally thought to myself as I walked out that day, “If I don’t see Scott soon I feel like my chest might burst.” I had been parking on the main entrance side of the building instead of the back, since we had to come in through the front and leave through the back per my work’s covid policy (plus it was weird getting in my car without Scott there coming out behind me). I come around the building and it takes me a moment to take in what I’m seeing. There is a car parked in front of the entrance that looks like Scott’s car, and there is a man standing there talking to Linda that looks like he could be Scott. I put my things in my car and just stare. I’m too far away to hear his voice, and he is mostly blocked by the large stone railing, and his hat isn’t black like usual, but I know it’s him. I wonder if I should just leave and wave. Then reality hits me: Scott is here, in living flesh right in front of me and I’m just going to casually drive off and wave after not seeing him for 7 months and after missing two other opportunities to see him?? Am I insane?? Then reality hits me again: there is only one reason Scott would be here today. I start to walk over but realize I forgot my mask, so I go back and grab it. Neither Scott nor Linda noticed my presence until I was maybe 12 feet from them. Linda sees me and she says her goodbyes to Scott, tells him good luck, and they exchange a quick little hug. I barely notice Linda though; I only have eyes for the man I have adored for so long.
Scott and I greet each other and I ask him what he’s doing here. He tells me he was dropping off his laptop and desktop. Me: “You got another job?” Scott says he did. I knew this was coming. Me: “Why didn’t you say anything?” Scott: “It just happened suddenly. I just found out today actually.” Me: “You didn’t tell me you were leaving.” Scott: “I gave my two week notice and next week was supposed to be my last week, but HR told me today to just make today my last day.” Me: “This makes me so sad.” Scott: “Yeah, I’m not happy about it. I’ve been here 9 years.” Me: “Really? That long?” Back when Scott and I first started talking to each other it was 6 years. I can’t believe 3 years had gone by. Scott: “Yeah, I mean I wasn’t looking for a job, but this just fell into my lap, ya know?” Me: “Where is your new job?” Scott: “Ca*********r in Ha*******. A guy that used to work here went there and I asked him to keep me in mind if any job came up and it did and they offered me more money. I couldn’t say no. They weren’t bringing us back here. They were going to keep us remote permanently.” Me: “They were?” Scott: “Yeah.” Me: “Yeah, you know I was walking by the empty cubicles earlier and I was thinking how depressing it will be if they don’t bring anyone back.” Scott: “It is. It’s dreary.” Me: “This makes me so sad.” Scott: “Yeah, I’m sad to be leaving.” Me: “So will you be doing the job you were doing before they started changing it?” Scott says he will. Me: “Yeah, you know I’ve been thinking about leaving too lately. It’s not the same and my raise last year was terrible.” Scott: “Oh yeah, the raises here suck. That 2% or whatever it is, it’s bullshit.” Me: “This makes me sad.” Scott: “Yeah, I didn’t want to have to leave.” Me: “Can we keep in touch?” At this, Scott turns to look at me. He has his sunglasses on and I can just barely see his one eye lock onto mine. I can’t read his face since he also has his mask on, but I know I wouldn’t be able to read this look of his anyway. It’s the blank look I’ve seen 100 times, the one that can mean 100 different things. And as he stands there, not answering me right away, there are several things I notice: how sad I had sounded when I asked him the question; how he is obviously taken aback that I asked him this, so it probably didn’t cross his mind to keep in touch with me; he is thinking over how to respond to this, and possibly get out of having to ever speak to me again once he leaves here. Scott: “Yeah, we can keep in touch; just hit me up on instagram you know I’m on there.” (More on this in a future post). To me, it’s not the most hopeful answer, but it isn’t flat-out rejection at least. Me: “I’ll miss you.” Scott says something about how he hates having to leave everyone, or something along those lines. I wasn’t fully listening because I was shocked by what I just allowed to come out of my mouth. Then several things happen all at once: Scott says, “I’ll miss you too” and he starts to turn his head toward me, but before he can even finish what he’s saying I begin to move toward him, and he opens his arms to receive me. Scott, the closed-off man, the man who has his arms folded so much of the time, immediately opens his arms to me the very exact moment he sees me move toward him. I slam into him and wrap my arms around his neck, and his upper body sways back slightly from the force, but he’s strong and steady and stays rooted to the ground. He wraps his one arm around my mid back, and the other arm beneath it, just above my lower back. I have waited for this moment and also feared it. I expected any hug from him toward me to be loose and uncommitted, or quick and half-hearted. But Scott’s embrace is firm yet gentle, and he just stands there holding me while my arms are wrapped around his neck, my chin resting on his shoulder. We just stand there like that, not moving for many moments. I could’ve stood there with him like that the rest of the day, but eventually I say, “You smell so nice.” Scott: “What?” Me, louder: “You smell so nice.” I hold him for another few seconds and then begin to let go. My lips flare, wishing to kiss him, but we have masks on and I wouldn’t make that move anyway. Scott had let me be the first one to break away from our hug. We say a few more things to each other and then begin walking. I poke him in the arm and playfully say, “Don’t ignore me either.” Scott says he won’t and as I bring my hand back, my fingers lightly graze his forearm. I start to walk toward my car and look back over my shoulder. Scott has his head down. I turn back forward and then look back again, but his head is still down. My heart sinks. I get back into my car and he does too. I pull out and watch Scott in his side mirror. He took his mask off but I can’t see his face. His hands are moving and I recognize that he is using hand sanitizer, but my brain doesn’t send that signal to my hands because as I pass I wave to him and he is watching me in his mirror and he waves back. I wanted that moment to feel like something, to feel like a permanent goodbye, or to feel like a talk to ya later. But it didn’t feel like anything. I just felt empty and sad.
I make it a little bit up the road before I have to pull over and cry. Several cars pass, and one looked like it could’ve been Scott, but I’m not sure if it was him or not. I don’t think it was. I send video snaps to Stacy and Amanda, in tears, crying about how Scott is leaving and I’m heartbroken. They don’t know. Both of my best friends, and they don’t know that I am in love with a married man. I decide to send the rest of my snaps to only Amanda, and I apologize for never telling her the truth, for never telling her the extent of my feelings for him. Then I head home and try to calm myself down enough so that my mom can’t tell I’d been crying.
I lay awake and cry in bed for hours that night. I think about Scott not telling me that he was leaving, that he saw my car in the parking lot and still did not seek me out. I think about our last conversation, from Wednesday, when he was giving me back a one to three word responses, and how he said he’d hit me up when he wasn’t busy, to which he never did. I think about how I didn’t even get to see his face one last time, and how I could only barely see his one eye through his sunglasses at that one moment and how I had to keep looking at the mole on his forehead because it was literally the only defining feature I had of him to take in and focus on since the rest of his face was completely covered pretty much. I think about if he meant what he said about us being able to keep in touch or if he was lying. Then I think about the other times when he told me we couldn’t talk anymore, so I’d hope he would be telling me the truth now. But I sounded so sad that it could’ve influenced his answer, and he won’t have to see me again so he could lie and not worry about it because there’d be no consequences. But then I think about him saying he’ll miss me too, and I know he definitely meant that. He didn’t have to say it back, but he did, and Scott has never ever said anything like that to me before.
I think about our hug, and how I got to stand there, up on my tippy toes, with my arms around his neck and his arms around me. I can still feel the light pressure of his arms around my body and I don’t want that feeling to ever go away. A man I have dreamt about kissing, and laying next to, and having sex with, and the thing that matters to me most is that I at least got to hug him. I know that I will cherish that moment forever. If I never see Scott again, if I never talk to him again, I will remember that hug still 50 years from now.
Saturday I spend a large portion of the day with Amanda. She lets me cry when I need to and she takes yoga photos for me later. When we go back to her apartment later, I go through photos I took of conversations between Scott and I, and I notice how in so many of them I had gotten a portion of the conversation in the photo where he is talking about how he wants to go back into the office. I knew we talked about it sometimes, but I never realized just how often it was, and how much he really, really wanted things to be better in some way. At one point, he is told they should be able to go back in once or twice a week, but then that changes to never. Scott says at one point he might consider leaving, but when I send a crying emoji he tells me to stop and that it won’t be anytime soon. But it was soon. And I’m angry. Not at Scott, but my company. I’m angry because he was all but forced to leave. He complained about them breaking up his department for no reason, and they didn’t care. He complained about not being able to go back into the office, and they didn’t care. He complained about them adding to his position and changing it, and they didn’t care. He complained about the daily zoom meetings which later became daily trainings for a role he didn’t want, and they didn’t care. Scott wanted to stay, he wanted to go back, but he was being forced into this corner and I honestly cannot blame him for leaving. Scott is very tolerant, but he’s also rational and level-headed. He wasn’t going to keep giving his time to a company where they didn’t truly care about him or listen to what he had to say. And I’ll be leaving too. I knew it Friday, that I cannot stay here. The main reason I stayed for the shitty pay and the bullshit was because of Scott. I couldn’t leave him, but now he’s gone and there’s nothing left for me there. I love Pete and Joyce, and I’ll miss everyone else, but it’s never going to go back to normal there, and even if they did bring everyone back it wouldn’t matter, because Scott would no longer be there. There would always and forever be a huge chunk of my work life missing, and it would be the most important part to me. I’ve spent these past 7 months wondering when we could have some normalcy back, when I could once again see Scott walking about the building, interacting with him like I used to. But it was never coming back. Everything we had there is permanently gone, and unless some miracle happens, I will probably never see or hear from Scott again.
I sent him a message on Instagram Saturday afternoon, since I felt inspired to do so: “Hi, Scott. I’m sorry yesterday, I don’t think I told you good luck at your new job. I was upset by the news of you leaving, but I’m happy for you that you found something better and I hope it works out well. I’m also sorry for when I said don’t ignore me. I was just scared that you would, so that’s why I said that, but I also don’t want you to feel obligated to keep in touch with me if you don’t want to. I just wanted you to know that I appreciated our time at work together and how I will miss our talks and your company. I don’t expect anything beyond a friendship, so I wanted to clear that up. I wanted to keep in touch cuz I truly value your friendship and I admire you for who you are as a person. Work won’t be the same without you, and I have felt lately it’s my time to pursue something else too. I hope we can keep in touch though, but I’m leaving that decision up to you. Anyway, I hope you have a nice day and enjoy the rest of your weekend. :)” He hasn’t responded and it isn’t marked as read, but I know the message will probably come through as a request, which he can then accept, deny, or leave sitting there in limbo, and I’d never know which he chose. I also requested to be his friend even though his page is private and he has no photos up, but he hasn’t responded to that either. He told me before he’s never really on there, but I know if he has the app that he got the notifications. I’m not dumb. But what I don’t know is what is going through his mind. Maybe he plans to just ignore me, or maybe he is taking time to think things over, or maybe he truly has not been on there. In any case, I was going to send him one final message when I felt like it was the right time to. I’m not expecting him to respond to my first message, so I know I’ll probably be sending the second one, to which I’d be very surprised if he responded to that either. I have it ready to go, as I typed it out in a moment of clarity, but I don’t want to send it yet in case Scott does happen to respond to me.
I pulled oracle and tarot cards Friday night too. Amanda got me a tarot deck for my birthday, so I did a past-present-future spread and here’s what I got: Past - a woman sitting in a cell, feeling sorry for herself, not realizing that she holds the key to her own freedom (this was most definitely past me before Scott.) Present: heartbreak (obviously true - and this card flew out of the deck and onto my lap so I didn’t even have to pick it). Future: A man coming to offer stability and loyalty (is this Scott? or some other unknown man?) I decided to do a past-present-future with my traditional Ryder-Waite tarot, which paralleled my first reading a bit: Past - I pulled the High Priestess, which stands for secrets and an unknown future, though she could also represent intuition and the subconscious (this makes sense too because I always felt like the future with my situation with Scott was unknown and that I was left in the dark about things; the intuition and subconscious also makes sense because after I began interacting with Scott and slowly learned to free myself from the chains I placed upon myself, our connection grew and I could connect to my intuition more as well). Present - 8 of cups, which could signify feeling dejected and giving up because of having to deal with abandonment (Scott leaving could def be interpreted as abandonment). Future - Ace of swords, meaning triumph (Honestly, I could interpret this in so many different ways, but I have no idea how a triumph would play out for me, but it is a positive at least, so that’s all I need to know). I also pulled 3 oracle cards from my Inner Compass deck (not a past-present-future thing but I was just feeling the 3s) and they each revolved around manifesting my dream life, following my inner guide, and taking control of where I go from here. Oddly, though it was 3 different things, they all somehow tied into each other. I pulled 3 cards from my rebel deck and got “You are talented and fucking amazing”, “You are loved”, and “Love”, all of which seemed to somehow tie into each other as well. There’s also words on the back of those but I wasn’t feeling drawn to that in this moment. In any case, my future might be looking good, but it still doesn’t change the present of me hurting right now.
I want to post more about this, and on my feelings about today and going forward from here, but I will do that some other time this week. I’m tired and I’ve cried so hard writing parts of this. I was able to schedule an emergency therapy session tomorrow with my therapist, so that’s much-needed right now. Then tomorrow I have to brave facing my computer screen, looking at my contact list, and seeing that Scott is no longer with the company, and seeing the chat bubble I left open where he said he’d hit me up, and seeing that he never got the chance to. I’m going into the office tomorrow too so I can do my Duo therapy session and cry freely without my mom knowing. So I also have to face the office at the same time, his forever dark and empty office, the hallways he once walked and won’t walk again. The ghosts of past memories of him were already there on a normal day, so I have a feeling tomorrow I am going to spend more time crying than working.
I never wanted to lose you, Scott. I love you.

hi what is mash and why do you love it so much because i need to know if i need to love it too thanks
Hello, anon! It took a bit because I wanted to put time into my answers, so here you are!
What Is M*A*S*H:
M*A*S*H is a tv show about doctors/nurses stationed at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M*A*S*H) unit on the frontlines of the Korean War. The show focuses on the medical staff as they desperately try to save the lives of young soldiers. Many of the doctors are draftees and they are faced with trying to cope with the horror of a war they want no part of and that is the absolute antithesis to their professional calling. They fight against death every day, struggle against military bureaucracy, and try to keep their sanity. Often that deep stress is released in humor, practical jokes, and wildly unmilitary antics, but the true costs and realities of war are never treated lightly. I’ve never seen another show that can make me laugh so hard and then turn on a dime to make me cry just as deeply a second later. The show is a beautiful examination of human nature, heart, found family, loss, helplessness, despair, exhaustion, humanity, and hope,.
M*A*S*H ran for 11 years, from 1972-1983 and the finale, Goodbye, Farewell and Amen, is still the most-watched television broadcast in history (the NYC sewer nearly faced collapse because people would all flush the toilet at the same time during commercials, and the streets were totally empty of cars as over half the country, 150+ mil people, watched the finale live together all at the same time. Can you imagine?!). Plus, it’s been in continuous syndication for 45 years which is impressive. M*A*S*H is for all generations, it resonates far beyond the era in which it was made, or which it was made about.
Why Do I Love M*A*S*H So Much (in general):
I don’t think there is another show out there in the history of the world that has written such narratively wonderful, deeply moving character arcs. I don’t know if there’s another show out there where the characters grow so much from their relationships with one another. Or a show that depicts masculinity in such a healthy, tender way. It is normal on M*A*S*H for male characters to: Cry. Hug. Tuck each other in. Hold hands. Perform emotional labor. Actively listen. Dance together. Sleep with teddy bears (and not have it be a joke). Admit they were wrong. Change and grow from being wrong. Etc, etc.
And while Major Margaret Houlihan is the only female lead, her character arc is the most beautiful of any character I have ever watched or read. The show doesn’t start out particularly feminist, but it definitely ends that way (both male and female characters evolve here and it’s wonderful). And if more tv shows had characters half as complex as Margaret Houlihan, tv would be a whole lot more interesting, and women would be a whole lot farther along toward equality, imo.
Why Do I Love M*A*S*H So Much (the personal):
I was 15 or 16 when I started watching M*A*S*H. I was going through a very dark time in my home life. But my Mom would usually have M*A*S*H on while making dinner or just after. It was their weird time of day where it seemed like a truce between us. Sometimes I’d even sit all 5’8 of my gangly teenage body on her lap and we’d just watch like that with her arms around me (which given that things were darkly terrible the rest of the time it was like being a small kid again in a way I really needed). We’d talk about the characters. We’d talk about the stories. We both loved Margaret Houlihan (it’s interesting that Margaret has the most valuable traits I learned from my Mom - things I like most about her and am grateful she taught me despite all the bad stuff).
Soon I was racing home after school and jamming in a blank VHS so that I could record each ep. I’d cross reference between tv guide and IMDB to try to see if any eps that I hadn’t seen yet would be on so I could record them for my collection. I made an elaborate cataloging system because they weren’t shown in order! And some eps were shown only rarely!! (I’m only 28, it amazes me that this was how things were not that long ago lol).
Anyway, the DVD box set came out and I saved up alllllll my $ for it. Thank goodness, because then I got sick and for a few years the M*A*S*H characters were the most consistent and truest friends I had. The show is deeply personal for me. I can watch it over, and over, and over. It makes me laugh, and weep, and cheer. It’s like having friends. Like having family.
Should You Love M*A*S*H too?
I want you to love M*A*S*H. I want everyone to love M*A*S*H! And M*A*S*H holds up. It’s still radically progressive. It’s still - in this time where North Korea is a frequent headline, where we have a government we do not trust, in a world where we have been at war since 2001 - deeply relevant.
Here’s the thing though: it was made in the 70s, about events in the 1950s, and this is 2019 tumblr-land. You’ve all read the roasts about lack of critical thinking skills on this website and ability to contextualize, and those posts are unfortunately not wrong. And the world has changed - and changed for even better than what was, at the time, truly radical! Even terms that were the liberal, pc term in the 70s have changed now and are not liberal or pc anymore which for the 2019 watcher might raise eyebrows. But the show is extremely pointed about calling out racism, homophobia, sexism, military fetishism, colonization, etc. I think maybe the only other show I can think of that goes so hard at dogged and relentless political call outs would be One Day at a Time. So I feel protective of M*A*S*H because in 50 years maybe we will look back at ODaaT and say yikes about certain things, though that feels crazy to say now.
If you do want to watch, here’s my advice (pull down your pants and slide on the ice (sorry, omg M*A*S*H jokeee)):
Do not start with S1. Start with S4, or S5 even. For one thing, there are some cast changes at the start of S4 so you get intro-ed to everyone again in “Welcome to Korea pt 1 & 2” and “Change of Command.”  It’s a really good starting point to see a lot of characters on the brink of change. Don’t get me wrong, I still really love S1-3 but the characters haven’t grown yet. I love going back because I know them so well, but if you’re just meeting them, I recommend getting to know them in the middle of their journey, watch them evolve, and then go back and see where they started. And I think Col. Potter/BJ really elevated the tone of the show.
Because M*A*S*H is an older tv show, most people who love M*A*S*H never watched the show in order because we could only watched it in syndication! And you don’t really need to watch in order! In fact, CBS had the final call for episode order so sometimes even the air order is different than the writing, filming, intended order. Also, because they had 11 years of content over a 3 years of war, the show itself isn’t chronological. Due to probability (there are just more Potter/BJ eps) I saw more S4+ eps when I was first watching the show so again that’s my newbie preference. Now that it’s on Hulu (and remastered OMG) it might be tempting to watch in order, but really do recommend skipping around or at least starting later in for sure. You’ll learn context as you go (recs below). Then once you get the characters and their arcs it’s suuuuper fascinating to watch in order.
Fight me: Is everyone bisexual on this show??! Yes, yes they are. This is where I go full 2019 tumblr-brain, lol, but looking back I think it’s one of the reasons I loved it before I understood myself. It’s gentle, tender, pretty wavy. Alan Alda’s Hawkeye Pierce is, like, arguably canonically bi, like I even wonder if he was intentionally written/played that way on the dl. It’s pretty blatant?? And don’t even get me started on Margaret Houlihan. Godddddddd.
On that note, and maybe you will fall over, but Margaret and Hawkeye are my actual, #1, forever OTP. Which is weird for you, dear readers, I’m sure, as I run a v strict wlw blog and I’m very proud about that. But broken people who heal and change and grow because of the other is my tea, jam, and bread (”crackers and jam! too bad!” ;) ),  and so far the writing of other characters and relationships hasn’t a hope of even coming into the range of depth these characters have (obvs not just wlw ships, all other mlw ships are The Worst as well, we’re all doomed, why does tv suck). But anyway, I would take them over any ship any day of the week goombye (but also….shipping Margaret is kinda like….not the point of Margaret Houlihan).
It’s worth noting that M*A*S*H has a character named Maxwell Klinger who wears a dress to try to get out of the army via a Section 8 (previously known as a “psycho”) discharge (remember lgbtq was still classified as a mental illness, smh). Obviously, this is potentially triggering. And, obviously, not okay in today’s world. To me the show does call out that it is the policies/laws/politics that are crazy, not Klinger. I think there are still some fairly modern ideas in his portrayal in that anyone who treats him like he is crazy, or is disrespectful, is very pointedly shown to be bigoted/an antagonist. Klinger is excellent at his job, brave, loyal, true, and that’s all anyone who is a protagonist cares about (and I do think they try to show to the extend they could during the time it aired that even if Klinger were not doing it for a discharge, they would respond the same way). Fwif, imo, Klinger isn’t played as a one note joke for wearing dresses, in fact, to an extent, he does wear them utterly sincerely. He loves, deeply loves, clothes and fashion because loving something gives him something to live for. It becomes his passion, not a gag. The gag is that Klinger will do anything to get out of the war through any available loophole he hears about (having an imaginary pet camel, eating 10 sausages in a single day, eating a jeep, trying to get into West Point aka join the military to get out of the military), etc. His comrades in arms treat him very sincerely and are very protective. Early on, a jeep comes in with wounded and Radar pulls Klinger away from the blood, “careful, you’ll get your dress dirty” in the most serious, sweet way. Col Potter is always very serious and sincere about telling Klinger when one of his dresses is a fav, and Klinger positively glows. When Klinger has to trade his dress collection to local women in exchange for shelter for the wounded during a bug out, Col. Potter, regular army in his 3rd war, tells Klinger (who is in tears) that it’s the finest act of bravery he has ever seen (and he means it). When Margaret desperately wants to look pretty and Klinger pulls out one of his best frocks and helps her dress in it - Margaret who grew up in combat boots wanting a crew cut - it’s pretty emotional (and I bawl when he gives her the wedding dress, goddd). As for Klinger himself, he’s one of my favorite characters. He has the biggest heart and I love him (and yes, I might feel differently if I had a different life experience than I do - that is why I’m flagging this as something that might not be for everyone, or might be trigger - because history already is triggering, and not everyone might be as moved by him as I am).
If you’re a 30 Rock fan you will know the star Alan Alda as Milton Greeen, Jack Donaghy’s father, and if you love Beauty and the Beast you will know that the actor who voiced Cogsworth is a major (lol pun) character in S6-11! But that’s all crazy to me because they are always M*A*S*H, first and forever, and always in my mind! I can’t believe they’re all in their 80s now, or that so many of them have passed.  :( They are truly my whole heart, my family, my home.
If you do want to watch, recommend you start with the following eps (omg this list is long but it feels so short):
Welcome to Korea pt 1 + 2 (s4)
Change of Command (s4)
Aid Station (s3)
Death Takes a Holiday (s9)
Carry on, Hawkeye (s2)
Bug Out pt 1 + 2 (s5)
Dear Sigmund (s5)
Period of Adjustment (s8) *my first ep ever :,)
The Bus (s4)
Sometimes You Hear the Bullet (s1)
Tuttle (s1)
Crisis (s2)
O.R. (s3)
5 O'Clock Charlie (s2)
The Nurses (s5)
The Interview (s4)
Movie Tonight (s5)
Abyssinia, Henry (s3)
Hepatitis (s5)
Your Hit Parade (s6)
Peace on Us (s7)
Eye for a Tooth (s7)
Old Soldiers (s8)

Hey, Look Me Over (s11)
There’s a million more things I could say about the show. I feel like I haven’t summarized it justly. If anyone wants to chime in with why they love M*A*S*H, what your fav ep is, etc, please do :)

Matt Hullum made the announcement in a journal entry today that Rooster Teeth is laying off 13% of its staff.
Variety has an article up about the downsizing, mostly the same info that's in Matt's journal, with a few other facts—notably to me, a mention of the fact that WarnerMedia (RT's parent company, all under the AT&T umbrella) also swallowed up and effectively killed the Machinima brand. In fact, it turns out a few Machinima properties were shuffled under the Rooster Teeth umbrella when that happened.
I was unfamiliar with Machinima the YouTube Channel and Machinima.com (as opposed to machinima, the medium) until Quinton Reviews did a Fallen Titans episode on it recently, and I'll admit I was kind of hoping he'd have more to say about Red vs. Blue as it's... really the only machinima work I care about, but his video was mainly about the Machinima brand. Still, it is informative if you, like me, know nothing about Machinima!
Anyway, from the second Variety article above, there's also this:
Warner Bros. acquired full control of Machinima in November 2016, and put Machinima under its Warner Bros. Digital Networks group. AT&T closed its $85 billion deal for Time Warner in June 2018 and since then has consolidated or killed off several digital businesses. Under AT&T’s ownership, WarnerMedia shut down FilmStruck, from Turner and Warner Bros. Digital Networks, and WBDN’s DramaFever. In addition, Turner shuttered its Super Deluxe studio.
Mm....hm.
Yeah, so AT&T seems to have an unsurprising pattern of acquiring and quietly destroying small web-based companies, particular those centering around streaming content for a somewhat niche audience.
I don't want to be a doomsayer, and it's not like I think Rooster Teeth is going to be shut down tomorrow. I do feel like this doesn't exactly bode well for the AT&T conglomerate's investment in this relatively small studio.
There are certainly other factors to be considered. Only a couple months ago Matt was responding to criticisms of Rooster Teeth related to crunch and their animation pipeline, and announcing that Gray Haddock would be stepping down as head of animation. Of course, downsizing the studio by more than 10% seems... not a strong step toward reducing crunch, unless they're drastically reducing or delaying content in kind.
In terms of content itself... this is purely speculation, but I do have some concern that gen:LOCK was not the hot property Rooster Teeth hoped it would be. I like gen:LOCK. I like it a lot, and hope we see many more seasons. But I don't exactly think it's taken off as the kind of viral hit RWBY has been for the company. gen:LOCK is a subscribers-only show. If you don't have a FIRST membership, you can't watch past the first episode... and that just might not be enough to get people hooked enough to subscribe.
Going back a little further, one of my personal favorite RT shows is the live-action apocalyptic drama Day 5. It's got high production value and some really excellent acting talent, both from Rooster Teeth regulars and outside names. It has a compelling story and great characters. And it barely has a fandom. The last post on /r/dayfive is two years old. The tumblr tags are barren. And good luck even finding a twitter hashtag. Day 5 has seven works on AO3. The show debuted three years ago.
Production was put on hold after season 2, while the show was syndicated on the El Rey network, and the episodes were temporarily removed from the Rooster Teeth site while it aired on El Rey (they're back now). But even while the show was airing, as a fan I found it was tough to find other people actively watching the show and talking about it, even among fellow Rooster Teeth fans. I didn't see gifsets pouring down my tumblr dash; I didn't see meta, or episode reaction posts.
I suppose I should've seen the writing on the wall, even then. Day 5 has not been cancelled as of now and I really hope we get a season 3, because I love the show. But I'll admit I am nervous for its future.
I bring up these examples because I think the subscribers-only content model is demonstrably not working for Rooster Teeth. And to be clear, this is not me saying that people shouldn't have to pay for things. I've had a Rooster Teeth subscription since it was called a "sponsorship" and being a sponsor meant getting episodes of Red vs. Blue a thrilling two hours ahead of the general public! And I've been lucky, because for all these years Rooster Teeth has had a policy of letting longtime subscribers be grandfathered in at their original price, which means I've been paying about a third of what an annual subscription now costs. Recently it was also announced that the grandfather policy would be coming to an end. I'm in no way surprised or angry; I figured this would happen eventually, and I sure enjoyed this gravy train while it lasted! What I will probably do, once my current pay period runs out, is subscribe month-to-month only when there's something airing that I really care about. I'm not even sure if that's going to be RvB when season 18 rolls around. (But if they announce season 3 of Day 5 I will be there with bells on.)
Anyway the upshot of all of this is:
A Rooster Teeth FIRST membership ain't as cheap as it once was.
One free episode tends not to be enough to get people hooked on a new property unless it's kickflip bananas amazing.
With fewer people watching a new property as it airs, and short seasonal runs (Day 5 had six episodes per season; gen:LOCK premiered with eight), there just isn't enough buzz to create a hit on the level of RWBY.
Without that buzz, you don't get the kind of FOMO atmosphere that the FIRST delay creates. When RT first went to the one week gap between subscribers and the public, fans were largely upset, on the grounds that this would divide the fandom and make it difficult for non-subscribers to interact with the fandom on the same level, cutting them off from discussions and general hype around each new episode. And they were right—that was the point. That's why it worked.
Day 5 and gen:LOCK are good shows. There are valid criticisms of both, of course, and both are niche genres that won't be for everyone, but they're by no means bad products. RWBY's first volume, by contrast, was messy, poorly-paced, and looked unfinished. It had charm, absolutely, but it was objectively a bad product and the show still managed to draw a huge audience in its first three volumes—because anyone could watch it. But if you subscribed, you could watch it first, and you could be one of the first to comment on it, make gifsets, theorize and speculate. You wouldn't miss out.
I mean I fully understand why Rooster Teeth didn't want to make an expensive live-action show and give it away for free. I do get that. Same with an expensive polished animated series featuring big-name voice actors. And I'm as sad as anyone to see that those shows haven't grabbed the kind of audience RWBY has.
But something's not working here, and I think the modest reception of their two most-hyped subscribers-only shows plus this layoff makes that clear. I don't know what the answer is. I wish there were an easy answer. There probably isn't.
I really do hope Rooster Teeth survives as a studio and is able to keep making cool, creative stuff. I've had plenty of criticisms of RT and their properties over the years, but at the end of the day I'm still a fan who's pulling for them. The pattern of global media conglomerates swallowing up and disappearing small, independent, web-based content makers doesn't exactly bode well, and that's... well, that's late capitalism for you. Still, I do hope they hold out for a while.
At least long enough to get us a third season of Day 5.

Note
First off, I really like reading your tumblr and am glad that I found it again after tumblr was a shithead about your old url (If there's ever some petition to sign or inbox to fill to help you get through to tumblr support, I'm all ears! Also, funny fact that would go well with one of those anon memes: I always misspelled 'embarrassing' until I started reading your tumblr. That's just about the only improvement to my English in the last 10 years; the rest has been all downhill).
Second off: you mentioned in your tags to the bodyguard post that you had a movie rec. I assume that you were being a bit sarcastic and mean the movie of the same name (which I like), but since I dig the trope a lot, I feel compelled to ask if there is some other (potentially queer!) bodyguard movie out there that you would recommend.
message 3 of 4 (poor planning/wordiness) I remember a while back you were looking for the Killing Eve EW cover? My old roommate had a subscription, but never changed the address after moving out, so we just kept getting his magazines. I have mild hoarding tendencies, so I kept ones I was sort of interested in, and just found them again while moving into a new place. I would love to send it to you if you still want it. My email address is *************[AT]gmail[DOT]com.
[final message, I swear] I recognize that “stranger on the internet wants to mail you stuff” is weird, but I can send it through an intermediary or I can give you my info first or whatever? I got bored today while unpacking and thought about how I should tell people on the internet that I appreciate them (in the spirit of doing something positive for thanksgiving? since I appreciate y'all more than most of my extended family and the genocidal undertones of the holiday as it stands?)
what a delightful set of messages, pal! i’m glad you find me again, too!
first, it took me at least a year of having that url before i learnt how to spell embarrassing correctly first go. my one goal for the rest of 2019 is to work out how to get in contact with someone at tumblr, because they very clearly have a do not reply policy when it comes to contact about terminations. i message them every few months - if i keep it to some other issue, i get a response within days, if it’s about terminated accounts, nothing. but i have not given up!
second, it was definitely a joke about the movie of the same name.
third, i actually ended up with a copy a month or so later, but that’s unbelievably sweet of you to offer. also, your email address is hilarious.
fourth, happy thanksgiving to you! we don’t do anything remotely similar here, but it’s the one american holiday where the general idea seems like a good one to me, if you separate it from the historical context.

The Seventh Victim (1943)
As the only major classic Hollywood studio that no longer exists, RKO staked its reputation on two genres during the 1940s. After the end of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ respective associations with the studio, RKO was enriched by a string of horror films while becoming the spiritual home of film noir. Producer Val Lewton (it is often said that the early Hollywood executives and producers who built Hollywood were Jews and immigrants, and Lewton checks both boxes) and his unit specialized in wildly successful horror films armed with fewer resources than Universal – which had a bullpen of monsters (Frankenstein’s monster, Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Phantom of the Opera, etc.) to produce multiple films for. In less stable financial shape than its Hollywood rivals, RKO also doubled down on film noir – atmospheric crime dramas surrounding tales of moral ambiguity and lustful passions that were often modestly budgeted. It gave the studio a perception that it relied on B-pictures, but these B-pictures boasted robust profits and greater quality compared to those at other studios.
Directed by Mark Robson in his directorial debut and produced by Val Lewton, The Seventh Victim is decidedly one of those many RKO B-pictures. Yet The Seventh Victim is a fusion of RKO’s specialties. There is a murder, a mystery, an urban setting lit in the requisite high contrasts between light and dark, and Satanism. Because of cuts made in its post-production, the film – co-written by DeWitt Bodeen (1942′s Cat People and 1948′s I Remember Mama) and Charles O’Neal (his film debut, later credits including 1959′s The Alligator People and 1963′s Lassie’s Great Adventure) – leaves certain motivations and plot developments unexplained, which can make The Seventh Victim difficult to follow halfway through. It is, however, a stylish amalgam of RKO’s most acclaimed genres for the 1940s.
At a Catholic all-girls boarding school, Mary Gibson (Kim Hunter in her debut) has learned of her sister’s disappearance. Jacqueline Gibson (Jean Brooks) has not been heard of some time; she is Mary’s only surviving family member and the source of her tuition. Mary takes leave from school, travels to that hotbed of Satanic activity known as Greenwich Village in Manhattan, and learns the Jacqueline had rented a room above an Italian restaurant called Dante’s. Relenting to Mary’s pleas to ignore residential policy, the proprietors unlock the door to Mary’s apartment – where there is nothing except a vacant wooden chair and a noose above it. In the ensuing investigation, Mary will contact physician-psychiatrist Dr. Louis Judd (Tom Conway); private eye (Lou Lubin); Jacqueline’s former co-worker, Frances Fallon (Isabel Jewell); one-armed pianist Natalie Cortez (Evelyn Brent); poet Jason Hoag (Erford Gage); Jacqueline’s husband, Gregory (Hugh Beaumont); and a fellow named Brun (Ben Bard).
Previous Lewton horror films at RKO contained mysticism or faux science to jumpstart their stories. In The Seventh Victim, the cultists are without apocalyptic intentions, never committing violence except when necessary. There is no final chase sequence, fantastical battle, or depiction of gruesome rituals. The Satanic worship occurs largely off-screen, as the members of the cult live their lives as normally as they possibly could. The male members particularly seem to be chasing lost loves and passions – was this vulnerability preyed upon by cult recruiters? This is not a horror film intended to frighten viewers at a given scene, but to inject foreboding after plot revelations – trapping the audience just as much as the Gibson sisters. Maybe screenwriters Bodeen and O’Neal could not delve deeply into the practices of the cult, lest they run into trouble with the Hays Code (a series of guidelines to censor American films, enforced by the Motion Picture Association for America, and replaced with the modern-day MPAA ratings system in the U.S. in 1968). Thus, the emphasis remains on Mary’s search for Jacqueline – which resolves in a more straightforward fashion than one might expect. Bodeen and O’Neal also settle for a thinly-veiled allusion to Dante and Beatrice from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. But once the audience sees Jacqueline for the first time, her presence is felt through the rest of the film, as if watching her sister from corners light does not seem to reach.
Jean Brooks was contracted to RKO during the 1940s, playing largely bit roles and working as supporting characters in Universal serials. Her role as Jacqueline in The Seventh Victim is probably her most famous work today – with no small assist from her haircut and dark wardrobe. As Jacqueline, she plays the role like a half-willing hostage – serene, quiet, making deliberate gestures subtle enough to suggest ulterior motives yet just a hair short of conspicuousness as if not to anger something or someone. Brooks’ mysteriousness is not sexual like the many femme fatales of film noir; instead, it is more like a young person knowing that she has been led astray, but nevertheless playing games because the answer to the puzzle before her is currently unknown. As the embodiment of the film’s primary dilemma, Brooks is excellent here. Elsewhere, Tom Conway reprises his character from Cat People (1942) – there is debate whether Cat People and The Seventh Victim are set in the same reality, or if RKO could care less about continuity – and is serviceable in perhaps too robustly championing his character’s unorthodox ways.
Seemingly arbitrary asides – sudden character appearances, several minutes spent establishing the centrality of a location in Greenwich Village, grisly imagery or actions never recalled again or without rhyme or reason – contribute to a clunky film that makes the pre-climactic narrative extremely difficult to describe. Thankfully, The Seventh Victim is swift, clocking in at seventy-one minutes. Add another twenty or so minutes to the film without credible exposition, and that almost certainly results in an incomprehensible mess (then again, 1946′s The Big Sleep is almost two hours of incoherent plot that has been redeemed over the decades because of its exceptional flirtatious dialogue).
The Seventh Victim is a film where all the lurid details occur in the dark, or out of view of the protagonists. One of Val Lewton’s favored cinematographers, Nicholas Musuraca (1946′s The Spiral Staircase, 1947′s Out of the Past), inundates The Seventh Victim with alternately eerie and harsh lighting – suggesting that a Manichaeistic worldview is impossible in film noir, a genre where reasonings are bound to desire, impulse, and power.
In this fascinating experiment melding RKO’s film noir expertise and Val Lewton’s horror groundings, The Seventh Victim feels like a rough draft of a genre mash-up that did not spawn any successors, nor inspire filmmakers to combine the genres for themselves. The film should be sought for those who have seen ‘40s horror and plenty of film noir; for general audiences, this is not an ideal introduction to RKO’s wheelhouses or to any of the brilliant creative minds behind The Seventh Victim. Mark Robson and Val Lewton left an incomplete sentence, perhaps an ellipsis, on this venture of horror noir (noir horror?). One must wonder if – in an era where noir is no longer produced – someone might be willing to add their perspective, several decades after the most recent attempt.
My rating: 7/10
^ Based on my personal imdb rating. My interpretation of that ratings system can be found here.
NOTE: This is the 666th write-up I have published on tumblr. Off to work on the next one because I can’t end on this number.

The sun is shinin', come on get mappy
Ever found yourself floating aimlessly around the alphabet soup of UK government departments doing data, wondering who's responsible for what? Or lost track of all the interesting initiatives that you might be able to get involved with or learn from?
I'm delighted to be running a new project with the ODI that tries to help with that. We're mapping data responsibility and initiatives across the UK government here, so please do tell us what we've missed and comment on what we've already got. It'll be open for comments until Friday 10 September, so you have all summer to contribute.
There's a launch page explaining everything here, and we're also going to be publishing a blogpost a week focusing on a particular area of the ODI manifesto. This week is infrastructure week. Keep an eye on the ODI blog for future ones.
In other news:
A date for your diary - the 22nd Data Bites will be taking place on Wednesday 8 September at 6pm, thanks to ADR UK and the ESRC. Details will appear here in due course - which is also where you can catch up on the previous 21 events.
I'm also chairing an event for IfG at this year's Labour Party conference - more here.
I'm really sad to see this news about Understanding Patient Data (full disclosure - I'm doing some work for them at the moment). Natalie has done a terrific job, and I really hope their work is able to find a home elsewhere - it's more important than ever, given recent events.
Nick Timmins' new report on how the Department for Education handled the pandemic is well worth a read. Warning: contains mutant algorithms. Diginomica pull out some lessons on those here; my piece from last summer on that is here; and there are more links below.
If you enjoyed this account of what allegedly happened to that Spectator piece on Marcus Rashford (h/t Alice), pour yourself a cup of tea and enjoy this story of something similar from my time at the Media Standards Trust.
I did it - my first half marathon since 2019. There's still time to sponsor me and donate to the excellent Tommy's, here.
Warning: Graphic Content will now be taking a break until September. I'll be posting some things on Medium as well as on Twitter in the meantime, so do follow me there. If you need some other data-related newsletters, podcasts or event series to tide you over, there's a list for that. And if you know anyone else who should subscribe, encourage them to start the new school/parliamentary term in September the right way by signing up.
Enjoy the summer, thanks for subscribing, and see you in September
Gavin

Incredibly easy to get started!
“Fan Page Robot is a very cool system! It was incredibly easy to get started and attach my social media accounts. Within 10 minutes I had figured out how to work it and was already starting to generate content and post to pages and Facebook groups. I am primarily a B2B company so I really liked the ability to post to all my accounts or select just LinkedIn depending on the content I was posting. This system makes managing my social media strategy campaigns much easier.”
— Charlie Harper, Cardinal Business Consulting

Fan Page Robot is miles ahead of anything that “claims” to be comparable!
“Amazing, this software should be required for anyone doing any real marketing, social media or content distribution online. My Hats off to the developer and client support is above and beyond the best I’ve encountered online thus far! The only possible complaint I have is once I started using it I lost all respect for other software developers I supported in the past! Being a JVZoo software buying junkey, I now realize that was all junk! Fan Page Robot is miles ahead of anything that “claims” to be comparable!”
— Star Riley, Author & Social Media Marketing Expert, MyUSA Media
Tumblr media
The support has been absolutely stellar!
“I was looking for a social media management system that included Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google. It’s difficult to find a system that will manage all four. The fact that Fan Page Robot does this plus manages WordPress is an added bonus! The support from this company has been absolutely stellar. They were quick to respond, and sent me screen shots to walk me through what I needed to do. And the content curation feature makes finding and posting relevant content a breeze! I’m delighted!”
— Kim Hillman, Booklet to Business Coach

It makes me look good professionally and my network is growing
“Fan Page Robot is impressive. My Twitter audience is growing daily and the quality of tweets even surprises me at times. My Facebook page makes me look darn good now thanks to Fan Page Robot. The potential to make money with Fan Page Robot is only limited by you. So far it makes me look good professionally and my network is growing. Yes customer service is awesome as well. I felt I must say something here as I hardly post in the forum.”
— Jerome G. Sherman, Warriorforum member
Tumblr media
It’s been amazing!
“I bought this program a week or two ago and it’s been amazing! I spent most of my days on Facebook and only did Twitter once a week. Since using this program the last few days I’ve gotten 20-30 retweets- 30-40 new followers and more. To do the posts I do now on a daily basis and do it manually it would take me hours if not the whole day. Now I spend maybe 5-10 minutes and done. I currently use it for LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter… CUSTOMER SERVICE HAS BEEN GREATTTTT!”
— Robert, Drone Research Inc.
Tumblr media
ENTIRE week in just 10 minutes!
“I’ve been looking for a social media tool that could do 1 simple thing, post to all of my social media accounts and keep them all organized. I even got so desperate to find a good tool that I started to develop my own WordPress plugin to do exactly what FanPageRobot does. I’m overjoyed that this system does everything that I need it to. I have all of my social media posts lined up for the entire week for ALL of my accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Google My Business, Google+, Twitter, and Pinterest), and it only took me 10 minutes.”
— Mario Salazar, Flawless Website Design

Almost every part of Trump’s life is under investigation
WASHINGTON — Investigations now entangle Donald Trump’s White House, campaign, transition, inauguration, charity and business. For Trump, the political, the personal and the deeply personal are all under examination.
Less than two years into Trump’s presidency, his business associates, political advisers and family members are being probed, along with the practices of his late father. On Friday, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke became the fourth Cabinet member to leave under an ethical cloud, having sparked 17 investigations into his actions on the job, by one watchdog’s count.
All of this with the first special counsel investigation against a president in 20 years hanging over Trump’s head, spinning out charges and strong-arming guilty pleas from underlings while keeping in suspense whether the president — “Individual 1” in prosecutor Robert Mueller’s coded legalese — will end up accused of criminal behaviour himself.
The scope of the scrutiny has shaped Trump’s presidency, proving a steady distraction from his governing agenda. So far, much of it has been launched by federal prosecutors and government watchdogs that eschew partisanship. The intensity is certain to increase next year when Democrats assume control of the House and the subpoena power that comes with it.
Although Trump dismisses the investigations as politically motivated “witch hunts,” his high-octane Twitter account frequently betrays just how consumed he is by the scrutiny. He’s also said to watch hours of television coverage on milestone days in the investigations.
“It saps your energy, diverts your attention and you simply can’t lead because your opponents are up in arms against you,” Cal Jillson, a Southern Methodist University political scientist and historian, said of the scrutiny. “It weakens your friends and emboldens your enemies.”
Almost midway through his term, Trump is struggling to deliver on his central campaign promises. He may end the year without a Republican-led Congress giving him the $5 billion he wants for a border wall. And he’s previewed few legislative priorities for 2019.
Even if he had, it’s unlikely the new Democratic House majority would have much incentive to help a president weakened by investigations rack up wins as his own re-election campaign approaches.
Perhaps not since Bill Clinton felt hounded by a “vast wing conspiracy,” as Hillary Clinton put it, has a president been under such duress from investigation.
This jeopardy has come with Trump’s party in control of Congress and the Justice Department driving at least three separate criminal investigations. They are the Mueller probe looking into possible collusion, obstruction of justice or other wrongdoing in contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia; the New York campaign-finance case involving hush money paid to Trump’s alleged lovers; and now a case from New York, first reported by The Wall Street Journal this past week, examining the finances and operations of Trump’s inaugural committee and whether foreign interests made illegal payments to it.
Behind those matters is a battery of lawsuits or inquiries from state attorneys general and other parties tied mainly to Trump businesses.
At best, the investigations are overshadowing what has been positive economic news. At worst, the probes are a threat to the presidency, Trump’s family and his business interests.
The deep diving will only grow in the new year when Democrats take over the House. They are expected to launch their own investigations and could pursue impeachment, though party leaders caution they could face a political backlash by taking that step.
Even if Trump avoids impeachment, the Democratic investigations will create headaches. Administration officials will be called to testify before Congress and lawmakers will seek a trove of documents, probably including Trump’s tax returns, which he has refused to make public.
A bare-bones White House staff may struggle to keep up. A tally by the Brookings Institution finds more than 60 per cent of Trump’s top aides have left in the first two years, a turnover rate exceeding the previous five presidents. In addition, 10 Cabinet secretaries have departed, more than Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Clinton lost in two years. The shake-ups now have left Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s budget chief, doing double duty indefinitely as the president’s chief of staff.
That combination makes it hard to imagine a president effectively engaged in policy, even if — as in the case of Clinton — the drawn-out investigations lead to an impeachment that fails to remove the president.
“The modern presidency is extraordinarily complex and demanding so you need the president’s full attention,” Jillson says. “Where your attention should be, you’re also thinking about meeting with your lawyers.”
As the investigations mount, few Republicans have dissociated themselves publicly from Trump. But privately, some lawmakers do worry that the investigations will damage his re-election prospects and their own chances in 2020 House and Senate races.
The federal campaign finance probe has put GOP lawmakers in a particularly awkward position. Prosecutors — as well as Trump’s longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen and a tabloid company that has long been an ally — assert that Trump directed hush payments to keep women quiet about alleged affairs in the closing weeks of the 2016 campaign. Such a payment would violate campaign finance laws. Cohen was sentenced this past week to three years in prison.
Underscoring the balancing act for Republicans, outgoing Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah initially stated that he didn’t much care about Trump being implicated in Cohen’s crime, then thought better of his words.
“I made comments about allegations against the president that were irresponsible and a poor reflection on my lengthy record of dedication to the rule of law,” Hatch said in a statement Friday.
Five people in Trump’s orbit have pleaded guilty to charges in the continuing Mueller probe. Among them, Paul Manafort and Rick Gates were Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, for a time in Trump’s presidential campaign. George Papadopoulos, a lower-level campaign adviser, was sentenced to 14 days in prison and is out. The others are Michael Flynn, who was Trump’s first national security adviser in office and is to be sentenced Tuesday, and Cohen, who is expected to begin his sentence in March.
In addition, the special counsel’s office says Flynn, in giving 19 interviews and turning over a mountain of documents, has assisted in a criminal investigation that has yet to be revealed.
In other words, there’s no end in sight.
Trump is also exposed to legal peril beyond that from federal prosecutors. Among the lawsuits or investigations:
–Democratic attorneys general in Maryland and the District of Columbia and congressional Democrats are challenging the Trump Organization’s business transactions with foreign and state government interests, such as those at his Washington hotel, citing the constitutional ban on presidents taking payments from such sources without congressional consent.
–Summer Zervos, once a contestant on Trump’s TV show, has sued Trump for defamation for accusing her of lying. She alleged in 2016 that he made unwelcome physical contact with her. He’s failed several times to derail the case.
–New York tax officials are looking into whether Trump or his charitable foundation misrepresented tax liability. In addition, the New York tax department said it is “vigorously pursuing all appropriate avenues of investigation” after a New York Times report found Trump and his family, going back to transactions by his father, Fred Trump, cheated on taxes for decades. The report said Trump received the equivalent today of at least $413 million from his father, much of it through dubious tax manoeuvrs. Trump called the report “a very old, boring and often told hit piece on me.”
–New York authorities allege in a lawsuit that Trump illegally tapped his charitable Trump Foundation to settle legal disputes, help his campaign for president and cover personal and business expenses, including the purchase of a life-size portrait of himself for $10,000.
Stanley Renshon, political scientist at the City University of New York and a psychoanalyst, says all of that adds up to a lot of people, not just the left, “trying to make his presidency untenable.”
It is, perhaps, vaster than the right-wing “conspiracy” the Clintons endured, Renshon says. “I call it the everybody conspiracy.”
