"Don't Think Twice" (Love Confession Pt. 2)

"Looking for someone, Tenten?" the voice, which was obviously Neji's, echoed from a couple of feet behind her. Tenten's heart almost exploded as she heard him. She quickly turned around and came face to face with the Hyuga prodigy himself.

She tried to hide her nervousness "Oh, Hi Neji!... I was just... looking for Gai sensei and Lee… you know, to say goodbye. Did you enjoy the wedding?"

"Yeah, I did. Although not as much as you, I'm afraid. I would have liked to rest so peacefully. I usually suffer from insomnia” He teased her playfully.

She blushed, feeling so embarrassed. She tried to act nonchalant by saying "well, you know me" and laughed but then she realized: He was watching her all that time. Ino's words began to make sense inside her head

Neji smirked as he watched her turn into a blushing mess, her attempt at nonchalance clearly being faked, and just as clearly seen through by him.

Sakura and Ino watched the whole scene and exchanged a knowing glance. They both said goodbye to the bride and groom, as well as to Tenten and Neji, to give them more space.

Ino gave Tenten a friendly pat on the back before leaving and gave her a look as if to say "You got this" to which Tenten replied by nodding her head.

Neji said goodbye to the girls in his distinctive cordial tone of voice and then laid his eyes on Tenten. They both looked at each other and became even more nervous. Neji took a deep breath and in a burst of courage, he grabbed Tenten's hand and without saying anything, they began to walk.

Tenten was shocked. Her heart was beating a thousand beats per second just at the touch of his hand, and at the fact that he was leading her somewhere. Despite her nervousness, she was also starting to feel a bit more confident thanks to Ino's words.

Neji leads her away from the party, heading towards the training fields. She could feel the thumping of her heart in her ears, softened by the sound of grass and fallen leaves under their feet as they walked. Suddenly he stopped and turned to look at her. It was clear he was trying to maintain his usual stoic expression, but a flicker of nervousness was evident in his eyes and his voice.

"Tenten... I" he began to say but was interrupted by Tenten.

"What are we doing here, Neji? Why did you bring me to the training field?

Her question caught him off guard but he couldn't help but smile. It was a trait of hers to talk a lot when she felt nervous, so he knew that she was as anxious as himself. He relaxed, gathered courage, and answered her in a tone of voice that evoked longing.

"Remember that day we trained so hard I ended up passing out in the middle of the field?” He looked at the ground, searching for something and then pointed, drawing a sort of line with his foot, "right here."

Tenten watched his face as he spoke, her nervousness easing a bit at his suddenly softened appearance. She smiled at the memory he just brought up and nodded in approval.

"Yeah, I remember. It was a hot summer day and you were being particularly hard on me, so you ended up exhausted and passed out right here. I had to drag you all the way to the infirmary.”

He smiled, "Yes, you did. And you also stayed by my side until I woke up. But when I opened my eyes, you were asleep, your arms and head resting on the bed very close to my hand. You looked so... adorable... I never told you this, but…” He smiled and approached her slowly, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “I couldn't help but stroke your hair at that moment... Then I realized what I was doing and immediately pulled my hand away. It was an unconscious gesture, but it got me thinking for weeks.”

Tenten was so flabbergasted she couldn't hide it. Her eyes widened exorbitantly. The idea of him, the ever stoic Neji, stroking her hair while she was asleep, was so shocking and heartwarming that it almost took her breath away. She looked at him in disbelief, wondering if she had heard that last part right.

He continued.

"From that moment I began to feel nervous in your presence. Every time we trained or were on a mission, I couldn't help but look at you when you were focused on something else, thinking about that brief moment at the infirmary... wanting to... stroke your hair once more… to hug you... to kiss you”

Tenten's heart rate increased with every word that came out of his mouth, "You... you wanted to… kiss me?" she managed to get out, barely being able to talk due to her heart pumping blood in overdrive.

He nodded, feeling beyond embarrassed but he didn't stop. “Do you want to know why I always train so hard?” He asked her with a serious expression.

“Of course! you want to prove yourself and become stronger” she replied, proud to feel that she knew him better than anyone.

He nodded and smirked in approval “It's true, I do want to prove myself. I want to prove that I'm worthy… of my clan, of my team… and of... you” he made a pause and gave her a warm smile “My stubbornness and determination to keep fighting even when I was about to pass out was always because of the desire to prove that I was worthy in your eyes.”

She was stunned. She couldn't believe what she was hearing... or rather, she didn't want to believe it. Him... trying so hard to win HER admiration? She would never have thought of that. The mere mention of those words moved her so much that she felt chills and her heart began to beat even faster... "You... wanted to be worthy... for me?”

Neji nodded, he saw her expression, the obvious disbelief on her face. He smiled a bit at the irony of it all. She was always so perceptive, so aware of everything that was happening around her... and yet, she couldn't see that he was clearly head over heels for her.

“Yes, I did. I wanted to be your equal, worthy to receive your praise. I wanted to have you by my side, fighting alongside me... I wanted to support you, to protect you… to watch you progress and..." he suddenly stopped himself short of letting the full truth spill out.

Tenten was still in denial “But... I'm not a genius like you… and I'm definitely not so feminine either. Why would you like me? I'm not that special..." Her face reflected insecurity and self-doubt.

Neji gently grabbed her chin, making her look at him. “I don't think I've ever meet anyone like you, Tenten" he said, and his usual composed voice took an almost amused tone to it as he looked at her face “You're bold, determined, fearless. And you know everything there is to know about weapons, I mean, how cool is that?” he paused to organize his ideas “What I really mean is… you're the most beautiful and interesting woman I've met… and I… I was so afraid to tell you this... I imagined a thousand scenarios in my head and every one of them always ended with me being hit on by you or rejected in the most embarrassing way…

Tenten looked at him, her wide eyes filled with disbelief. Neji, the confident and stoic shinobi, afraid that she would reject him? “You thought that I would hit you? Or reject you?" she asked softly, her voice still barely audible.

"Yes, well... I..." but before he could utter another word she approached him and let her head fall on his chest to which he instinctively responded by placing a hand on her back to pull her closer to him. It felt so natural to hold her like this, she fit perfectly against his body.

"Neji... you're an idiot... a huge idiot"... she whispered, a warm smile on her lips. It felt so good to be in his arms, like she'd always belonged there, like he was her home.

Neji laughed as she called him an idiot, he knew she said it affectionately. He held her tightly in his arms and buried his face in her soft, brown hair, breathing in her scent. He could feel the warmth of her body against his, and it sent shivers down his spine.

"Did you really think I'd say no? Did you never notice that I felt the same way?" she finally said, her eyes growing watery.

Neji lifted his face from her hair and looked down at her, noticing the tears starting to form in her eyes. He held her tighter, pulling her even closer, and shook his head softly.

"No, I didn't know... I didn't even dare to think you'd feel the same way. I just assumed you saw me as a friend. But... I should've had more faith in us. I should've noticed your feelings for me.”

She began to sob in his arms. "You're a huge fool, you see? No matter how prodigious you are, your Byakugan can't help you see the simplest things." She said, with a mixture of laughter and tears.

Neji chuckled softly at her words, his grip on her never loosening as she wept in his arms. "You're right. When it comes to you, it seems like all my genius and skills go out the window. You make me as clueless as the good old Lee.”

She started laughing and then Neji joined, They both laughed until they cried and then sighed in unison. Moved by the moment, she placed a hand on his shoulder and kissed him on the cheek, then she whispered in his ear, "Thank you... for making me laugh... and for everything."

His heart skipped a beat when she kissed his cheek. He felt a wave of affection and tenderness wash over him, and he held her even tighter, not wanting to let her go.

She moved away from him a little, but he brought her back to his body, taking her by the waist and kissed her lips without hesitation, crossing once and for all the barrier between friendship and love.

The moment their lips met, it was like something clicked inside them, almost like their souls had found their missing piece. Neji's heart pounded in sync with Tenten's, and he held her tightly against him. He deepened the kiss, needing to feel her even more, his body almost trembling with years of suppressed feelings now finally being released.

They looked into each other's eyes, expressing things that words could not express. A light, gentle breeze caressed them and enveloped them with the scent of grass and fresh flowers. Then he heard a murmur resonate against his chest "Neji... I..." She stopped, afraid to say what she was about to say, forcing her words to get stuck in her throat.

He noticed her hesitation and immediately cupped her face in his hands to kiss her again, this time more intensely and passionate.

Two birds crossed the clear sky at the same moment he pronounced the words she had waited so long to hear.

“I love you, Tenten”

The moment he said it, Tenten felt her heart swelling with emotion. She couldn't hold her feelings anymore and kissed him back. They held each other tightly, their bodies almost melting into one.

"You're so irritating, you know?" She said when they stopped kissing. He smirked, holding her close to his chest. She smiled, knowing there was no way out. Words came easily from her lips, sweet and sincere like a morning dew.

"I love you too, Neji... I really do.”

For me, they'll always be the perfect couple, and as long as I live, there will always be a Nejiten fan. I recommend listening to the song at the beginning, "Don't Think Twice," by Hikaru Utada. You'll see the lyrics are very Nejiten-coded, and the melody and Utada's voice are simply sublime. I've always thought they'd be a romantic and wholesome couple with a very healthy dynamic and If you listen to the song, you'll notice that it really resembles them. The lyrics truly inspired me to write some of the dialogs I wrote.

Your takes on Ai are always fun to chew on! Lately, I’ve been thinking about her breakup with Hikaru and I was wondering if Ai had any rationale for what she said. I don't understand why she brought up her pregnancy and Taiki in that moment. If her goal was to lessen the burden for the both of them, why even mention those things? I originally thought her neurodivergence and trauma might explain it, but even then, I struggle to find a clear link, and just attributing it to that alone feels a little handwavy. Maybe it is the answer? Since I think you have a broad view of her character, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I've been meaning to do a longer post on that chapter specifically (tbh I might make it part of the Miss Genius Idol essay series when YenPress's TL of it drops, so I can properly compare the translations) but part of why that bit of the chapter comes off as soon confusing is because MangaPlus... kind of beefed the translation???

I talked about this elsewhere semi-recently so I'll grab what I had to say to not just repeat myself at you.

Fwiw, this is more of an issue with M+'s translation of that scene then it being what Ai actually said. Don't get me wrong, she completely fucking beefs her delivery there either way because she's a disaster (<3) but for some wild ass reason, M+ makes her dialogue there way more harsh and directly critical VS the original text which is much more ambiguous in that regard. This is both why Aqua frames his revenge as being for "not understanding her" and why the DVD is supposed to be such a wham for Hikaru - because it at last clarifies for him that the person Ai considered burdensome in that relationship was herself.

But yeah, Ai's phrasing in Japanese comes off as much less pointedly cruel to me. Her line in Japanese that M+ TL as "I can't even, that's too tough, I can't bear it" is 「無理無理、流石に それは キツいって、背負え ないよ!」 Which is more like (forgive my scuzzy off the cuff TL) "no way, no way, that's too hard, it's too much to carry" You'll notice the seemingly minor but imo actually very important detail that Ai does not specify who cannot carry this weight in JP, while M+ explicitly has Ai say that she is the one who can't bear it. The only time she specifically talks about herself is when she says 「子供も･･･うーん 私じゃ難しいかな」 which M+ translate as "about the baby, it's difficult for me too" and ig that's not WRONG but especially when combined with her earlier line, the tone is kind of off. In Japanese, it reads way more to me that  Ai is saying she, herself, is not up to the task, that she's lacking, she wouldn't be able to do it VS the situation (and Kamiki with it) being in of itself the problem - though it's extremely understandable WHY he takes it that way.  Basically M+ TL is not incorrect in strict text but does kind of mistranslate the spirit of the exchange imo. It makes Ai more pointedly cruel and self-centred whereas the Japanese text reads to me as being more in line with the thoughtless, innocent cruelty she hurt Nino with. The main issue is I think the JP text is much more effectively a tragedy of miscommunication (which Aka has highlighted as something he wanted to explore with OnK), where you can see exactly what both characters are trying to say to each other but still completely understand why they're failing to communicate as a result of their individual pathologies. Yes, Ai did still do this in a very ungraceful and ultimately cruel way (WHILE YOU WERE BRUSHING YOUR TEETH??? GIRL PLEASE 😭) but the vibe of the JP text l makes it clearer this was a misunderstanding and Kamiki took the worst possible interpretation of it because he hates himself. That's why Aqua frames Kamiki as being punished for "not understanding her" - because if he really, truly understood Ai like he said, why would he be so comfortable assuming for nearly 20 years that she would have meant something that cruel? This element of the story comes off as kind of incoherent with the M+ TL because the vibe there ends up being, like. God forbid he believe the words his girlfriend explicitly said to his face???

@all-of-her-light also summarized things pretty neatly around the same time;

I think what she meant to communicate to Hikaru is something like "you've still got serious emotional issues around having fathered a child with Airi, and I think raising our child would be difficult for you even if you're agreeing to it (in order to stay with me), and I don't feel up to supporting you and our child at the same time". But Ai was 15 years old and socially awkward at heart and uncomfortable with difficult conversations, so what she wanted to say came out very messily.

In short, Ai mentions Taiki because she knows that Hikaru (as 742 pointed out) has enormous and understandable trauma about fatherhood and that she feels like forcing him to stay with her and raise their child would be a massive burden on him that he could not carry by himself. She just expresses it clumsily because, and I cannot stress this enough, her communication skills are absolute dogshit <3

I am tired of the saying "Aqua doesn't love Akane" part 3

Now I am always tired of this phase "Aqua doesn't love Akane" and "Aqua only dated Akane cause he can't date Kana" It ticked me off cause I know it's toxic Aquakana shippers talking and even some Aquakane shippers who let them win. I always found it hypocritical that they say he loves Kana cause she matches his dream girl Ai. But when it comes to Akane they say he doesn't love Akane even though she fits Ai more than Kana.

So let's just dive into it. Let us talk about last time with Why I don't like Aquakane Part 3 in season 1 Mem cho and Yuki what's his ideal girl.

And look how he describes Ai : Pretty Smile, Dazzling Performance and eyes that draw you by their very nature.

Now if you ask me Akane fits the box perfectly.

But I want to go on a so let go deeper on this with this one. When Yuki and Mem cho was teasing Aqua on does he likes Akane with the stars eyes. Aqua got flustered by the sight of her.

The fact he got flustered by Akane while doing this prove that he does like her she does fit his type of girl. Next we have this scene in season 2 of Oshi No Ko epsiode 12 where we get a parallel with Ai and Akane. Which yea it shows that he have a clear attraction and loves towards Akane. Cause the fact that Ai is Aqua's type and Akane get paralleled with Ai, him shows that he actually loves Akane. With that being said it just shows I said in my post about Aquakana being true, Aquakana parallels is when Kana is an idol which parallels with Ai being on the stage. But with Aquakane Akane parallels AI when she isn't on stage showing he loves her as herself. They could easily use that for Aquakane with Akane and Ai when Akane is acting on stage like for example in Love is Now But they didn't and chose when they are on their free time which parallels Ai when she not on the stage.

Now let's go deeper on how Akane paralles Ai. Goro said "Do you think Acting Fun thanks to Kana." "Did you think that you finally someone who understands you after meeting Akane Kurokawa"

People always talk about Kana as the light because they describe Kana as the sun. But Akane is the only one who truly understands Aqua. We see Akane hugging and comforting Aqua after she finds out the truth about Aqua being Ai's son saying "I'm on your on side no matter what happens" and "I'll carry your pain with you, okay". Basically promising Aqua that she will be there for him and understand his pain.

I say this scene is more shallow cause yes they connect other something they have something in common, but it isn't with anything with real depth it ain't a bad thing but still. But if you compare it with Aquakane

Akane fully understands revenge and his deep personal struggles, and she wants to help him through them keeping her promise when she hugged him. Not only does she learn about his desire for revenge, but he also learns about her desire to beat Kana and wants to help her through this.

Yes Kana knows that Aqua is a kind guy but Akane knows this further than anyone else. Now does this sounds SIMALIAR DOESN'T IT?

IDFC If you guys say Aquakane is toxic!! HOW It probably healther than Aquakana, and yes that for a different post. [Probably WAY LATER] And plus of course this.

And it not even just Akane and Ai, it Aqua and Ai as well. Aqua just like Ai don't know how to love, but just like Ai he wants to feel it.

And they both sacrifice their happiness for the ones they love to be safe or for their sanity.

These are the same traits that Akane has. Now, I want to go deeper to show how often Aqua helps her more than uses her. Because of the amount of times people are like, "Oh, ThEiR sO ToXic," and I am like, "How?"

comforting Akane when she feels sad when she accidently brings back Kana into her shell.

Saying that it's fine and Kana doesn't know herself as well as she thinks and it annoys him.

Aquakane both comfort each other, make each other happy, and support each other, which has been shown repeatedly.

He did more helping than using Akane honestly. And as me just repeating myself at this point

3: HE WAS/IS/OR WERE, IN FACT, HAPPY WITH AKANE and she makes him happy" There a damn clear difference with his desires with Akane and his desires with Kana. The difference it show that he does love Akane and he might still do but with Kana, it shows he's unsure of his own feelings

Well YES

Besides from his smiling at the thought and seeing her but their are actually funny moments between them like this

He literally said his days with Akane from season 1 to season 2 to throughout the private arc and even towards the end of their relationship; even spending time with her was his happy days.

In conclusion, Aqua does love Akane no matter how much you flip it. It a fact at this point. The fact this fandom is so distasteful to any ship that isn't their beloved Aquakana just make me and upset more than the ship itself, it was only till recently I saw it have problems. I respect any Aquakana shippers which isn't that like @manyaplayers and two gachatubers ‪@layannn715‬ , ‪@liloauden‬ on youtube.

But for the people who are like that respectful I told you so.

HI SO THE SUMMER HIKARU DIED IS ONE OF THE GREATEST MANGAS I'VE RED THIS YEAR, I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER :D

I wanted to yap a bit about how i think it's pretty much important seeing it also as a BL and how so many people are misunderstanding the beautiful relationship between Yoshiki and Hikaru but specially 'Hikaru', who he later on falls deeply in love, HEAR ME OUT OK?

In one of the first scenes of this series, we can understand perfectly what's happening to both of the main characters. Hikaru is gone, and Yoshiki has to deal with his loss even tho his friend is still there, but oops 😬 it's not really him. It's some kind of weird monster he has never heard before. It's clear that Yoshiki's mental health is taking a deep dive, NOT ONLY because he saw the corpse of his dead friend and has to live with whatever this identity is, but because apparently, Hikaru had a strong impact in his life, considering the divorce of his parents and the feeling of loneliness he felt for being "diferent" (queer in a small town). It's somehow acceptable that whatever he felt about his dead best friend is insignificant in this situation, 'cause no matter what he did, accepting reality meant losing Hikaru forever, and he decides that it's such a ubereable feeling that he wants, no he NEEDS this Hikaru around.

In conclusion, Yoshiki has to deal with grief, the loneliness of the bigotry, the loss of his childhood and the acceptance of his trauma and issues.

And 'Hikaru' is now free. He could destroy most of the village and the people living on it; but he decides he won't, because he loves, OH he loves Yoshiki. To the point He gives part of himself to this boy just to make sure he's safe. It makes sense the original Hikaru had this feelings burried inside him already but it's also clear to me that this thing, this monster experiences feelings for the first time and he can't help but feel everything in a way more intense level. So Basically, his undying love for Yoshiki is the chain keeping him on the ground when he should be this destruction and murder machine.

Do i believe 'Hikaru' and Yoshiki could be lovers?

Absolutely.

Everything on this manga is ahead of what we see, for example, when Hikaru loses his control all of sudden and turns back to his real form

Have you ever felt something so fiercely you felt like pouring your soul, or screaming off the top of your lungs?

Well, the monster revealing himself is a way to let clear how much 'Hikaru' (or rather just queer people) repress their own feelings to "fit in".

It's very meaningful how 'Hikaru' is so open and expressive (especially in a physical way) about how he feels and who he is, and Yoshiki is more of a "quiet gloomy boy" who has the deep desire of hiding himself for who he is truly (the way he keeps his bangs long is probably a manifestation of hiding away, which really makes sense)

So, yeah, Hikaru dying and coming back is this big allegory of how once you're becoming who you really truly are, and bigotry is all around, people are gonna notice something is wrong and when you come out, suddenly you are a monster.

The "old lady" interacting with both of them and specially saying to Yoshiki to "be careful not to get mixed up with him" as if it was, maybe, some kind of disease is craazy, because out of context it really matches well all of the big metaphor of "being queer in secret at a small traditional village".

Also! I wanted to point the BIGGEST allegory in this whole series.

The "Hand in the hole"

I've even seen people compare it to abuse, which honestly seems to me not only untrue, but, as someone with het comp, kind of offensive?

But yeah, that's definitely a metaphor for gay sex or at least same sex intimacy.

The catch is, Yoshiki does seem uncomfortable because, like the insides of a monster, same sex relationships are "unnatural". It gets really easy figuring out he actually likes the feeling of being one with 'Hikaru' since the second time he does it, he keeps telling himself how wrong it is, how he shouldn't be doing it, and then he forgets it, because he likes it. It feels good; However, once it starts "sticking to him" (obvious alegory for feeling guilty or dirty, like he sinned) He gets scared and runs away.

I feel that, at first Yoshiki mourns Hikaru, he Mourns their old relationship of a comfortable friendship and he doesn't understand why did his best friend had to die and become a monster, something so weird, so unnatural; but later on, they learn to accept themselves for who they are, even if they feel different in their own ways and come to terms of accepting the unconditional love they feel for eachother.

ANYWAYS, I LOVE THEM THEY LOVE EACHOTHER, IT'S UNHEALTHY, IT'S DOOMED BY THE NARRATIVE AND IT'S BEAUTIFUL

I hope everything goes right for them, or else I'll have one more year of therapy over sad doomed yaoi 😞🩷

hahaha XD aw, GOSH this comic is CRAZY, I think it would be fun if I read it as books and in volumes, it's because it's incomplete, and scattered eps that things feel so tense and awkward, I'm sure. It'd have more sense of flow as a volume.

I wrote a lot of things based on my stream of consciousness this morning (because well I draw hikaai and I DO care a lot about character portrayals and analysis) and I want to share it with you all! I reread it after the heat of the moment and I find it really funny,

If you want to feel assured about Ai and Hikaru (and perhaps ONK as a whole) or like the ship hikaai, I feel this is another post that could help you. Like I said in my ch 159 review, if this ain't it, I have no idea where this is going to head and I might as well take a break off from this piece for a bit and get some air. P3R episode Aigis is coming out on the 10th (great timing!) but I think I'm on the right track. I got so many things right since I picked this up thus far :D So for now, here we go again:

This is just my intuition and a piece mostly based on gut feelings.

Ha;; This morning, I saw someone extremely worried about Kamiki and Ai and couldn’t leave them feeling uneasy... I’m not in a position to calm others down, though!! I'm the one who needs to be calmed!! give me time to brace myself!!! I get tense because I care about where the story's gonna go too!!! I analyze characters and make fan works. I HAVE to look into the source material and make sense of things in order to do that o<-< I’m really stuck with this manga, aren’t I? What a ride... Okay I know the character looks a bit out of it. But listen, even if we criticize the character, we should wait for the next chapter before doing so. Come on, what would Kamiki even LIE about in the first place? Let’s sit down and think calmly. Let’s go over the facts.

Honestly, it would have been better for Kamiki if Ai wasn’t an idol. If Ai hadn’t been an idol, Ai wouldn't have had to die for deciding to keep her very kids with him!! Ai was murdered because she was an idol who had a boyfriend and kids(it's an absurd reason but to Ryosuke, that was his reason to go through with it). If she hadn’t loved Kamiki, she wouldn’t have died. This isn’t Kamiki’s fault, of course!! To add, if Ai weren’t an idol, they might not have broken up in the first place. Even if they had broken up, Ryosuke wouldn’t have tracked Ai down and killed her!! Things would have been so much better for this character if Ai hadn’t been an idol. His situation on the matter, It's totally the opposite of Nino and Ryosuke’s!

To Kamiki, Ai was certainly one-of-a-kind and irreplacable, yeah. But from Kamiki’s perspective, Ai was never a perfect, flawless figure that he found the need to idolize. She was someone who learned acting from him, who was clumsy and scattered, who needed his guidance in the beginning. She shared the same pain, opened up to him, understood him, accepted him, and loved him. Even though she gave him a deep wound and they parted ways, even when he thought she didn’t love him anymore, she remained precious to him to the point where he was willing to give his life for her. She was the person he wanted to marry. Ryosuke and Nino would kill her for not being perfect enough, but that’s not who Kamiki is. He’s actually the biggest victim of that incident only after AI herself. If Ai had survived, he might have been able to meet their children, reunite with Ai, clear up misunderstandings, and more importantly, Ai would still be alive. That alone would have made life more bearable for Kamiki than living in a world without her. I keep saying this but I'm sure he wouldn't have leaked the address to Ryosuke on purpose. I wrote many theories about this and I came to a conclusion that it must have been a mistake on his end, after getting drunk from sadness after Ai dumped him in the phone call. What kind of mastermind could he even be regarding this case? He was 19 at the time. It's total nonsense. There is no reason for him to try and attack Ai who tells him she has their children growing smart and healthy. He's lying about it to Aqua to make him feel better about avenging him because he believed that's what him and Ai's wanted.

What kind of grand conspiracy could a character like this possibly be behind? At least when it comes to Ai’s death, I don’t think he’s responsible. Even if he grew mad, I feel like that would have taken place after it happened. So what is it that this character wants? I’ve been curious about that too-

When I heard anime S2's opening, I immediately realized!! He wants to see Ai again! Would Aqua say something like,

Aqua has Ruby, Kana, and Akane. He’s not going to live just to get closer to Ai or live solely for her love. Maybe to fulfill Ai’s wishes, but that’s different.

“Without you, I cannot live anymore

I would sacrifice anything for you

I can’t get enough of your love

What should I use to fill in what’s missing?”

If Kamiki has any goal, it’s this: He's never been seen to have a desire for Ai to be the ultimate, perfect idol. He’s not twisted that way. If he’s twisted, it’s more like, “I’ll give anything for Ai.”

Think about it. If someone you love died, what would you want most? You’d want them to live again, right? You wouldn’t go around committing serial murders saying, “No one can surpass them!” You’d just want to see them again if there was even the smallest chance. That’s the most important thing. Nino and Ryosuke are twisted. They liked Ai as an idol, not as a person. But this person has two cute kids with Ai... even though they never got to see them properly. He says he has paternal love, and I believe that because there’s no reason for him to hate the kids. He was prepared to take responsibility, after all. Wouldn’t he be happy about having kids with Ai? Wouldn’t he find them adorable, especially since they look so much like him and the one he loves? Seeing how much he still cares for Ai, he’d probably love their kids too. He refers to them as "Yours(Ai's) and mine". He’d probably want to bring Ai back for the sake of the kids, if not for himself. He even believes Ai died because of him, so that would only add to his desperation and longing. When someone dies, they can’t come back, so that possibility doesn’t usually cross the mind-

However, It seems that the songs are saying there is some kind of hope for that becoming a reality even if the chances are very slim. To think Kamiki would have wanted to preserve Ai’s image as an idol and that's what's been driving him? No way. That’s exactly what killed Ai. He’d probably be sick of that... He just wants Ai to live. That’s his motive. He’s been hanging onto that.

As for the Hikaai ship, I had been holding off on judgment until Ai’s feelings came out. I felt like I won’t know until I hear from Ai herself how she feels about him so I waited out for quite long till the entirety of the movie arc, until it got its closure-

And it really occurs to me, people don’t seem to realize how much thought and conviction it takes for Ai to feel that strongly about a person.

Ai is scared, has a sensitive soul, overthinks things, is defensive, and gets wary. She’s afraid to love and get close to people because she doesn't want to get hurt.

But Ai couldn't give up Kamiki’s child because they were what she had with him, even while she was afraid it would be a burden to him!! Do you know how much certainty, affection, and love that takes? It doesn’t seem to resonate with people as much as it does for me, it's such a deep and strong feeling. That's what really got me. She was scared, but she still wanted them because they were theirs...and she protected their children with all her heart that point onward.

This kind of love is something that you might encounter just once in your lifetime, you might never get to meet someone like that at all.

So I thought, “Good for Ai. She found someone she loved that much.” Kamiki must have been a really precious person to Ai to make her feel that way.

In my opinion, for someone to make Ai feel like that, they would have to be the kind of person who would give out their every part of their organ, even their heart to her if that's necessary, and still think it’s not enough. And when you listen to the songs, the speaker does really seems to express that kind of emotion. That's why I thought 'Oh, this is definitely Ai's lover. This is Kamiki that's saying these things.'

You have to trust Ai’s judgment. Ai is serious about love, and she found someone to give it to. He's the one person she decided on. She wanted to live her life with him, worried about him until the end, named her children after jewels because they looked like the one she loved. Had her son who takes after his dad so much have the characters "love" and "longing" in his name. That’s how much she adored him.

What does that tell you? And when you look at the backstory, it seems Kamiki thought he loved Ai even more than she loved him.

Then that must mean he must have treated her really well. So, it’s not about whether Kamiki loved Ai or not anymore. That's totally just a given!! What’s important now is what he has done since Ai's death.

In chapter 155, he said he was "going to do what he could for Ai" and left. Then Aqua showed up near him in this chapter saying, “I need to save you.”

When you listen to the songs, the narrator keeps saying they don’t mind dying. This is a character who has already said they could die for Ai. So what will they do? I think they’re planning to die “for Ai.” But is offering something for Ai or dying for her really what Ai would want? No. Ai would want Kamiki to live and be happy, and they know that, but they’re lying to themselves. That’s the lie this character tells. It’s a self-sacrificing but self-satisfying kind of thing. That's why Aqua says the lies "are for his own sake". This also explains why Ai left a message asking to help Kamiki. This character is someone who could go to extremes "for Ai", but Ai didn’t want that, which is why Aqua is trying to stop it.

If this isn’t the case, then I won’t be able to make sense of this manga... Haha, the Persona 3 DLC will be out soon, so I’ll just go play that...

This feels right to me, though. If it’s not, I don’t know what else it could be;;

Maybe Kamiki's been possessed by an evil god? But even if that’s the case, the motive he has would probably still be about "saving Ai".

On another note, Kamiki was so gentle and kind in his tone when speaking to Aqua. He spoke really softly, didn’t he?

If he had been able to raise the kids with Ai, he would have been the type to pamper and spoil them... He'd have been a sweet dad. I feel like Ai really did choose a good guy to father her kids.

The way he speaks to Aqua feels quite similar to the last lines and atmosphere of the lyrics of Mephisto.. something about it will be brought up soon, I mean Aqua's wearing that same clothes.

To Kamiki, Aqua must be his and Ai’s cute son, right? But does he know Aqua’s soul is originally that of a 30-something-year-old doctor? If he’s possessed by an evil god, maybe he is aware of these things. But if he doesn’t, it might be a bit awkward. His son is almost the same age as him inside...

Aqua is Aqua, though? But that thought still made me laugh a little. I could imagine Kamiki suddenly speaking very formally towards Aqua upon figuring out he's actually the doc who aided Ai with delivering his children safely. Kamiki seems like the type to speak with a lot of courtesy... the way he speaks has been very polite. It depends on the character, but I think that is part of how he is originally.

It was a lot of work getting his giant crate of a gift and himself into Shizuoka, much less into the Kito family's manor. Yet here he was, standing alone in the spacious tatami room. Yano felt just an ounce of stress lifted from his shoulders now that he had accomplished the first step to his plans. Only an ounce, seeing that he knew this birthday surprise could easily be a big mistake on his part. Putting aside the fact that he was in some strange, unspecified relationship with a yakuza boss, he was growing more worried that the pounding in his chest was not fear, but something much, much worse.

“This is just courtesy. The Shizuoka team always spoils me f-for some reason… I gotta return the favor. Yeah, that's all. Nothing else. Just hand over the present and do my thing-”

“Hey there, Yano.”

The poor man froze in his spot at the utterance of his name. As Yano turned to face the voice, he couldn't help but shrink into himself once he saw the Kito-gumi boss watching him from the door.

“H-Hey Sakura…”

He stood silently, taking in her appearance. But before any of his mixed thoughts could form Yano began to panic as Sakura slowly approached him. Stopping her from doing or saying anything, the artist grabs her arms to keep her at a distance.

“W-Wait! Don't you want to see my present?” Motioning his head to the large wooden crate, he nervously rambled. “I wanted to get it out of the box before you got here but I guess your men were faster… It's nothing bad! Just needed to be packed well so it wouldn't break…”

With some effort and a lot of complaining that he could get it out for her, Yano revealed a new piece he had crafted: A large decorative mirror with a glass frame. Most strikingly, a large blue dragon sparkled along the left side of the amber frame, its mouth open in a silent cry.

Standing off to the side, Yano let her stare at his work. At that moment he used her distraction to his advantage to bumble around with the last part of the gift… Technically, it was just him, but he was putting in the extra effort of offering himself up with a collar and leash set that quickly fastened around his neck. Clearing his throat, he nervously stepped forward with the chain in hand.

“A-And of course… Knowing you don't really care about that stuff, you can have me… Whatever you want. Just for tonight! I-I can't stay here too long, since I have to be at an auction t-tomorrow. I'm doing this stuff since it's convenient you know? Seeing I am in the city for a few days-”

In an instant the end of the leash was snatched up by Sakura, yanking Yano close in a strangled yelp. Staring up at her, he felt the start of fresh tears collect in the corners of his eyes as all he could gasp under her intense gaze was a bewildered, pathetic, “H…H-Happy birthday?”

“Reika you bitch. You fucking knew didn't you?” Sakura thought as she stared down at Yano. She gave the chain another harsh tug as Sakura imagined the smug look on Reika’s face when she learned she was correct. Still, she wasn’t going to waste the gift Yano was offering to her, and well as much as she hated to admit Reika’s gift was going to be very useful at the moment. 

“I hope you know offering yourself to me like this was dangerous Yano but don't worry I’ll be gentle well at least in the beginning.” Sakura purred. Forcing Yano onto his feet Sakura walked out of the room dragging Yano using the chain collar like he was some sort of dog behind her to her personal quarters not at all caring that quite a few of her men were staring at the scene in front of them. 

“Should we…should we worry for Ietsuna?” Lucille questioned somewhat bewildered at the sight in front of her. 

“Lucy I love you dear but the Boss has been needing something like this for a while now.” Hikaru grinned glad that Sakura was going to get some tonight. 

“Agree but come on not even a little bit of sympathy for the man?” 

“I’m only questioning the Boss’ taste in men.” 

“Fengzhui rude.”

“You can't say you aren't thinking the same thing.” 

“Sensitive crybabies Nurarihyon supposes the Boss could do worse.” 

“Don’t ruin this for her you 5.” Shinji scolded from behind them causing all to slightly jump. “She’s trying her best here even if not what most people expect.”

“Do you have an opinion of this Shinji-san?” Irina questioned.

“My opinion of this is that I would like to get grandchildren.”

“SHINJI-SAN??!!”

Musical Influences

It’s February and I’m excited for this month.  I have plans to release both another chapter of The Imperial House and my Akira x Tsukushi one-shot Mene this month.  Anyway I received a lovely comment on the latest chapter of The Imperial House last night, where the commenter mentioned the final scene of Act Three matched up with the song I love you, I’m Sorry by Gracie Abrams (which it does, you should absolutely try it).  It got me thinking of musical influences and writing fics.  Specifically the musical influences that I listen to while writing The Imperial House.  

I don’t know how many of you read my “about me” section here on tumblr.  In it I talk about how The Imperial House has always been heavily influenced by music.  As many of you know I came up with this story back in 2020 while I was laid off from work and was dealing with what was going on by reading manga and watching Asian dramas.  To quote my about me, I stated that:

One day, as I was reading the (Hana Yori Dango) manga while listening to Luke Hemmings’s album, When Facing the Things We Turn Away From, an image appeared in my head of Tsukushi standing in the middle of a bridge crying in the rain. I stopped reading and wondered why Tsukushi, one of the bravest heroines I know, was crying. This idea remained in my head for several days resulting in the first draft of my current fanfiction, then titled Bad Omens.

Yeah so music has been involved in my writing progress since the beginning.  It should be to no one's surprise that I often listen to Luke Hemmings music (specifically When Facing Things We Turn Away From).  As well as the band he is part of which is Five Seconds of Summer who is better known as 5SOS.  I’ve been a fan of 5SOS since 2014, when my best friend wouldn’t shut up about them and had me listen to their self-titled album.  Since then we’ve been lucky enough to see them in concert several times.

I’m going to be frank with you, I know the band has done things that can be seen as problematic, such as the infamous Rolling Stone article from years ago and the people they’ve dated in the past.  However I stopped following all of that drama years ago and I'm only here for the music.

There’s something about Luke’s solo music that speaks to me as I write The Imperial House.  It’s different from the pop rock music 5SOS usually plays.  It’s clear that Luke was doing his own thing and it makes great background music as I’m writing.  There are a few 5SOS songs that inspired this work as well.  Act Four is named after a 5SOS song from their fourth album CALM and the Final Act of The Imperial House is named after a song from their second album.

Another influence has been somewhat recent and that is Rosie by Rosé.   Can I say how much I love that album?  It’s the best album to write late at night while wrapped in a blanket.  I just wanna know who hurt her. Honestly I love all the songs on Rosie. It's hard to pick one.  But besides APT (cause that’s everyone’s favorite), I really love, number one girl.  I want to point out I’m a casual K-pop listener, but I swear my mom who dislikes most K-pop loves Rosie. I think she’s gonna be huge as a solo artist.

Hikaru Utada is another big influence. Of course I’m listening to Flavor of Life. Some other favorites include Sakura Drops, Blue, First Love, and Prisoner of Love. Though when it comes to drama adaptations, I have also occasionally listened to the Boys Over Flowers and F4: Thailand soundtracks at times. Listening to these helps me recall how I felt well watching each of the adaptions. It helps me recall key moments of each series I love and helps inspire some of the scenes I write.

Also, I listen to the Spirited Away OST or the Final Fantasy X OST. It really depends on my mood. I guess what I’m trying to say is that my musical tastes are everywhere lol The point is, I wanted to share a bit of how the writing process for my fics goes. So I already got this twice so I guess I should try to get an answer out ^^;; It's... really a tough task though, but here we go! I can’t really pick a clear favorite of them all, so they’re just in random order. (Or actually, I guess they're in the order in which they've last been updated/posted.)

1. Caught Between, my Hikaru no Go fic where Sai's a real kid with dreams of turning go pro, an intersex condition, and not... the greatest parents in the world, I guess. (His mom has grown on me though.) I've talked about this fic a lot before, so I'll just say that I'm so glad I finally started posting it and that I've managed to nearly reach the end - still need to wrap things up, but at Sai's finally where he wants to be in live, so in that regard, all's fine.

2. blind alley, Assassination Classroom fic which, as usual for me, is basically about Shuu's relationship with his dad. The summary is rather short: "One day, Gakushuu decides to end it all. Just, all does not end that easily." I've said it before, I don't even know why I like this fic so much. Maybe I'm just a sucker for sad things? I don't think I've ever said anything about the title, have I? Cause this is a rare case where I didn't have to struggle to come up with a title only to end up with something mediocre. I was originally going to name this Dead End, cause stupid puns & Shuu being in a sense stuck in one, but then realized that blind alley refers to the same thing, plus it has the word "blind" in it... and you could say Shuu is blind to the truth for a good while there. (why I decided not to capitalize it, I don't know. Sometimes things just look better like that to me.)

3. oneironautics, AssClass & The Sandman crossover (no knowledge of Sandman required.) Again, Shuu and his dad are in the spotlight. It's just that I like Gakushuu, I found Gakuhou simply... intriguing. What's going on his brain? How did he really go so crazy? I've never felt like Ikeda's death would have been quite enough for that. They hadn't even been in touch for years! So, yeah, I guess one goal for me in this fic was to create him one potential background where all the problems have their roots. Also, writing dreams is fun. ^^

4. Ok, those first three were clear, but now it's getting hard. I've two random Hikaru no Go fics in mind here... maybe I'll pick the one that showcases my fic-naming abilities, It’s the Zombie Apocalypse! XD Its birth was absolute randomness, once upon a time in the hikago community on Dreamwidth people were playing Let’s Five on Hikago Day. Someone asked who'd be the five characters who'd survive the zombie apocalypse, and reading the answers I was attacked by a rabid plotbunny. This fic... it was just so fun to write. And I like how it's got a true ending and a bad ending (the reader's choice determines which you get.) (And, dammit, I'll mention the other fic I was just considering too: Chika-go, the Hikago & Dresden Filess crossover. Another fic that was really fun to write. And it has my first ever battle scenes. XD Also, I like the title for various reasons. ^^)

5. Then, finally: The End of Silence (The All Paths Lead to God of Go Remix), yet one more Hikago fic. This is perhaps a bit surprising choice, but I can’t help it… there’s something about this little fic I really like. It’s a remix, as you see (tho in all honesty it’s more like a sequel than a real remix, I feel), of Flonnebonne’s drabble The Silent Path where Akari, not Hikaru, was the one to end up with Sai. I had always wanted to write about Akari more, but somehow never had any inspiration. This (though I'm sure it's not exactly what anyone expects XD) fixed that.

IT IS TIME IT IS TIME

1. Madoka and Gingka

This has to be first like im sorry but have you seen their qpr energy? They are literally the modt solid and consistent dynamic of the show, and while underutilized, theyre just genuinely sweet. I love how their relationship continues with them frustrating or annoying each other sometimes, like how youd imagine from a roommate youre comfortable with, but having that same genuine trust and care. Theyre a powerful team that just gets each other normally, and helps each other do a bit more, a bit better.

I genuinely love that theyre just so comfortable around each other with no romantic teasing. Gingka just gets to casually sleep on her couch and stuff.

And from a fanon perspective it gives me a lot to do. Both these characters end up being flat at my points through the show, and digging into their dynamic is one of my easiest ways to add depth to them.

I love having Madoka and Gingka turn to each other to manage the whirlwind of their team in masters. Traveling this far is something new for Madoka, and she clashes with the team a fair bit. Gingka, on the other, struggles to actually work as a team and could use Madoka there to remind him.

I love fury aus of these two, or roleswap aus, i think their dynamic in general has a lot to play with when them working together is placed at the forefront

To mention i love writing my post fury interpretation of the characters where, after being together for so long, they now live separately and have to learn how to manage that.

Basically, i think there are a lot of stages of their dynamic to explore if i dig into it. And theyre just genuinely solid.

2. Gingka, Hikaru, and Ryo

This is the only dynamic that could challenge for top spot and absolutely none of you are surprised to see it. I love this dumbass family dynamic, and it is genuinely sweet to me how Hikaru, even in canon, just gets welcomed in so easily and naturally.

I also think theres a lot to explore from each perspective (if you cant tell from my fanfic archive). Hikarus emotions about her mom and getting a new family, both her reticience and eagerness. Her different interactions with both Ryo and Gingka, because at least canonically its clear to see shes closer to Ryo, so discussing how that affects her rivalry and friendship with gingka is interesting.

And Gingka, post fusion, just got his dad back in a tumulteous way, so exploring that dynamic is interesting. Along with how his perspective on Hikaru would change as Ryo basically adopts her while hes traveling.

And Ryos perspective on these two? Phenomenal. The guilt over not being there for Gingka, the way he helps Hikaru and tries to grow close to her?

All three parts of this dynamic are very strong and unique with interesting aspects to explore, and ultimately just a strong family dynamic where they all really care for each other.

3. Yuki and Madoka

I care about these two being a qpr wayyyyyy too much for canon but like. Im correct and i should say it.

While Madoka and Gingka are interesting for how their priorities wildly differ but how they form a team anyway, Yuki and Madoka have this instant understanding of each other and agreement of whats important.

Not to mention how isolated Yuki is, and how a lot of his arc (or the semblance of one they gave him) is about him opening up to others and becoming more confident, i think him forming a bond with Madoka really works with that. He really deserves someone who understands him, and Madoka deserves someone with common sense.

It also leads to interesting post fury interactions. Madoka and Yuki, as much as they would be friends from fury, probably werent super close, and madoka just opened her house up to yuki as she does to everyone. But then they really have to get to know each other, because no way is Yuki going back to that observatory. Madoka has to learn how to coexist like this with a person who isnt Gingka, like, just a reminder of how different people are. And Yuki has to really come to trust Madoka, to not just be getting along because the world is ending, but to truly accept his place there.

Theyre just lovely. I love them

4. Yu and Tsubasa

Im not gonna write much about them here. Theyre just good. Look at canon, theyre perfect. I didnt want to put them here cause their so obvious. But itd also be a lie to not put them here.

5. Hikaru, Tsubasa, Kyoya and Ryuga

Putting these all together even though i ship tsubasa and kyoya, but in this case i have a separate platonic dimension for these interactions that center around Hikaru. This sort of dynamic is really one that emphasizes how what happened at the end of fusion affected each one, and how they all have different reactions to it and how to deal with it.

Choosing this sort of dynamic lets me use them to foil each other as a group, and gives unique individual interactions. Idk if i wanna detail them all, bc i have fics doing so, but ill take a second to justify Ryuga and Hikaru.

I think Hikaru is the only person who could really challenge Ryuga in how he hurt her (and maybe hyoma). Her life really, really changed from what he did, in a way that sets her apart from the rest in a way that would take ryuga out of his comfort zone the most.

Hiakru, similarly, is the only one of the trio that cant really deal with ryuga, and i like hurting her. Having to interact with him would force her to confront things she might not want to confront.

Tsubasa and Kyoya with Ryuga is just them bitching off at one another.

Honorable mentions!

Gan Gan Galaxy: they didnt get on here bc i highlighted two individual dynamics from this team, but id like to point out as a whole unit their dynamic is very strong. They really carry masters, each having a unique feel in the group and causing so much chaos. They really managed to make a great group with these characters, and im still immensely attached to all of them

Team Wang Hu Zhong: Theyre just perfect. I love the way their all supportive of each other, even if they snipe at each other sometimes. Just strong, nice characters.

Lera and Nowaguma: I like these two cause they remind me of me and my brother. Not that my brother is shy like Nowaguma but he doesnt talk a lot. And i talk A Lot. And am Very Loud. Its a good dynamic, i love it.

Team Starbreaker: Oh these guys are so fucked up. Theyre so fucked up together. Most would kill each other for a cornchip. I love them. Its especially fun to write their team interactions as a focus and try to figure out the ways they foil each other, when they were normally used for foiling specific gan gan galaxy or other cast members.

Maru, Ren and Zyro: all headcanon baby! I genuinely like the sort of sibling relationship most of the cast forms with Maru. I think we see it with Zyro the most, but i also think Ren would quickly ingratiate herself in the dynamic to be one of Marus women role models. I think Zyro and Ren have a strained relationship from how Ren is treated, but the way she learns his moves and challenges him is interesting, and I really wanna see him respect her similarly. I think theyd get along well and have similar chaotic energies.

Hyoma and Ryo: fucked up disappointed mentorship. What can i say? Hyoma has Issues and Ryo is a dumbass.

Lastly, Hikaru and Teru. I think they should be besties

Excess of Care

WHUMPTOBER 2023, DAY 30: “It’s okay, just to say, ‘I’m not okay’.” Borrowed Clothing | Bridal Carry | “Not much longer…”

I guess writing one (1) interaction between Camilla and Hikaru in the early chapters of "Promotion to Parent" has always made me interested in more Camikaru (let's call it that lol) content for the HSAU. I don't even know why that is, I just felt like they'd be interesting to write interacting; and if this fic being there is proving something, it's that my writer hunch wasn't wrong.

This story is set a year after the main timeline, around the same time in the (school) year Promotion to Parent was set in. Since it serves as a bit of an indirect sequel to it, it does contain implied spoilers for it - so if it's ever interested you, please read that one first! It's not too long and also filled with all of the good stuff (read: family angst and lots of sibling love).

It's another short one that I thought I'd be more inspired by, or that would be angstier, but oh well… Brain is slowly stopping to function properly. It's another one of those I'll probs revisit in the future.

Camilla has lost count of the number of times she’s been told she cared too much about people she didn’t know anything about. She’s been warned not get attached to students no matter what. She’s been blamed for lacking perspective and thinking with her heart rather than her brain. Mind over matters, duty of detachment, all that jazz that has turned into background noise inside her skull.

And yes, maybe Xander is right when he points out to her it will one day make her miserable, the one day she’ll be powerless yet too involved. But what do you want her to become, then? A heartless machine of an employee? Very little for her, thank you.

Today is proving Xander’s concerns for her habit of “over-caring” right once more, she does suppose. She’s meant to just deliver some papers her brother forgot to give to one of his workmates that couldn’t wait: with the upcoming class council season upon the school, teacher comments and grades have become the latest emergency. He’s himself swamped with comments to write for all of his students – who are a lot more than anyone would expect, to be fair – so she volunteered to deliver something he apparently needed to give to someone as soon as possible. Leo was the one to call her out, this time, but she replied to his concern the same way she always does: with a smile and truthful words.

This someone has turned out to be one of the few workmates he has she knows about, from last year’s Xander-related fiasco. Elise most often calls him by an affectionate nickname used by the entire school, it’d seem, while Leo is always a lot more detached when referring to him, and neither case comes to her surprise. What surprises her more was that she’s already met and spoken with him once before, yet when he opens the door, she’s still a bit starstruck. It’s like meeting her sibling’s idol in an intended context.

Perhaps it’d be closer to meeting someone and realizing they need help, however, because this is exactly what she’s doing.

Camilla has no doubt in her mind that, would’ve it been anyone else but her in this situation, they’d have just called someone close to the person they barely know anything about and left when it was clear it’d be taken care of. This is the sort of things Leo and Xander have warned her not to do, because she cares too much, and it’s not good for her.

On the other hand, this poor boy needed a helping hand, and he clearly is home alone: not only have Xander and Leo both mentioned his fiancée was out of the country for the week, but she also knows from second-hand accounts Elise’s favourite teacher is a chronic workaholic with… questionable self-care. Hinoka and Shun have both corroborated that, although considering Shun’s own lack of routine, she can only guess his judgement came from first-hand experience.

And this is how Camilla is finding herself with her brother’s colleague in his arms. From what she can tell through touch and sight, he’s slightly feverish and very much exhausted, but he should be fine with some rest.

The first order of action, when someone passes out in front of you, is to carry them to a bed. Luckily, she’s always had a lot of strength in her arms to carry her siblings and help Xander out, so it’s not an issue for her to carry the fairly lightweight Hikaru (she isn’t sure if she can call him by his given name, but it sounds like a good compromise between the formal “Mr Matsuyama” Leo uses and the much endeared “Matsu” Elise calls him instead) to his bedroom.

It doesn’t seem like he’s been here for long periods of time lately, with half of the twin bed undone yet the other undisturbed. She quickly takes the time to put it back into shape before tugging her patient in, just making sure he isn’t wearing anything too uncomfortable. To his luck, he was already wearing a very casual combination of old t-shirt and sweatpants. (Come to think of it, this doesn’t match the casual yet strait-laced enough looks Leo usually describes his literature teacher wearing).

With that taken care of, she can proceed to the next stop, which awaits her downstairs. With the supplies in the kitchen and the tools at her disposal, she wipes up a quick get-better package: a steaming mug of camomile tea with a generous spoonful of honey, lightly toasted bread straight from the machine and, of course, a good, tall glass of water.

To her surprise, when she comes back into the bedroom, he’s already awake, and quite confused to see her in his house. It’s… a surprisingly realistic outcome of the situation, she must admit.

“Uhm… What’re you doing here?” He asks, voice hoarse and slightly on the morning side of things.

“My apologies, I must’ve scared you,” she replies without advancing. “My brother sent me to deliver you some papers for work, but almost as soon as you opened the door, you lost consciousness. I brought you back to your bed so you could rest properly.”

“Papers for work… Oh, right, Xander.” His shoulders slump. “You’re Camilla Nohr.”

“It’s indeed me,” she answers with a smile. “Can I come closer?”

“O-oh, yeah, don’t even ask.” He scratches the back of his neck. “Sorry for that, by the way.”

“Sorry for what?”

“For passing out on you.” She puts the trail on his lap. “Oh, you’re too kind, damn, thanks.”

“It’s no problem, don’t stress yourself about it.” She remains standing on the side of the bed. “I was just very concerned, truth be told.”

He drinks the glass of water first. As always, her guess was right on the money.

“I get it, that must’ve been a rough way to get greeted at the door.”

“It’s not just that. You’re just as tired as Xander, but unlike him, you’re all alone.”

“I appreciate the concern, but I’m fine.” He clears his throat. “Even though I realize I can’t be very convincing on the matter.”

Her face grows sterner. This is sounding all too familiar to her.

“You’re right, you’re not very convincing.” She uncrosses her arms. “You know… It’s okay just to say you’re not okay. Especially when you’re alone like you are right now.”

“Right,” he replies with a slight smile, as awkward as it is. “You’re right. It’s just, I don’t know who I’d be telling this to.”

“I’m sure you have friends and family willing to listen to it. If you find yourself without someone, then…” She smiles again. “You’ll find my phone number written down on a note on your fridge.”

“That’s a radical way to get me to take care, damn.” He chuckles anyway. “I’m very thankful for that Camilla, I really am. Still, please tell me you’ll go home. I don’t wanna keep you here.”

“As long as you promise to rest, at least until the break comes in.”

“I will. Thanks again.”

“You’re welcome. Although, for now, I think I’ll just take some time to call Xander and tell him I’ve delivered his parcel.”

Hikaru almost jolts in place.

“Shit, the docs, yeah!”

“They’re on the drawer in the hallway.”

“Oh, good. You’re really good at this.”

“Years of experience.”

As she turns on her heel and gets her phone out, Camilla unanimously concludes she can’t care too much about people.

chapter 146 thoughts

This chapter (and thus this chapter review) contains discussion of abuse, suicidal ideation and CSA, so if you're not in the headspace for that, skip this one and I'll see you next time.

we are so oshi no back

After last chapter left me fighting for my life to come up with literally anything to say about it, this was one of those chapters where I ended up having more and more to say about it the more I turned it over in my head. It still feels a bit disjointed and has that same issue of ripping through the events of the movie way too fucking fast that the arc as a whole has been having lately but this chapter was such a breath of fresh air I can't bring myself to care.

The chapter itself is more or less split in two, with one half dedicated to 15 Year Lie's in-universe events and the other focusing a bit on Aqua and Kana for, tbh, the first time in way too long. Admittedly, my enthusiasm for 15YL has waned given the reveal of just how much of it is completely made up but like. I'm still gonna over analyze this stuff. Sunk cost fallacy, don't fail me now!!!!

I joke, but the 15YL section of this chapter was legitimately bone chilling. That barrage of cuts following Uehara's attack on Airi…. fuuuuuuuck, man.

Airi herself is pure fucking poison this chapter too and I mean it in the best way. I continue to be incredibly impressed with how OnK understands the motivations of a person like Airi what her abuse of Hikaru is really about. When discussing this in 141, Miyako points out just how often victims of abuse can themselves go on to perpetuate their own pain out of a need to try and regain their dignity, but I think what Airi seeks in her abuse of Hikaru is control. We see how often she wields her power over him while pretending that he has as much agency as she does in their """relationship""" and it's repeated here, too; she throws the results of her own sexual abuse of him in his face as a way of permanently chaining the two of them together, all while tearing down his worth as a person as if to 'prove' he deserves to be trapped in her grasp. I've said before that Akasaka is unsettlingly good at writing toxic mothers but I think Airi has made it pretty clear that Akasaka understands and is thus excellent at writing abuse and abusers in general, and for someone like me who counts that as one of their favourite Themes (tm) in fiction, I feel quite well fed.

The abuse Airi hurls at him is also interesting from a perspective of paralleling Hikaru even further with Ai. We saw snippets of this in 140, of Hikaru characterizing himself as someone desperately trying to construct a version of himself that can be loved by others the same way Ai creates 'Ai of B-Komachi', a version of herself who can give and receive love in the way she thinks her authentic self is unable to. Airi puts this into more explicit words; Hikaru must construct this fake version of himself because there is no 'real' him and thus, he is inherently unlovable. Jesus Christ.

Knowing those words were swimming around in his head, it makes the HKAI scene that follows even more of a gutpunch than it already is. It's the most wonderful kind of miscommunication tragedy - with their respective traumas, there is basically no other way a talk like that could have gone and yet it's agonizing to see it play out. Ai's innocent cruelty in the face of Hikaru's pain and her suffocating smile… the worst part is, while I completely understand why this was so shattering for Hikaru, it's impossible to miss that this was, in a way, an expression of love from Ai; it was honesty, an admission of vulnerability. She herself even says she doesn't want to lie to him. But to Hikaru, what else could that have sounded like but a confirmation of his most godawful fear?

that said. the timeline here is very confusing. this seems to imply hkai were still dating all the way up to the murder-suicide, which seemed to be just before the dome concert but did the breakup really seem that recent during their phone call?? this whole timeline is penised beyond repair.

The art in this chapter in general is incredibly good but something in particular I want to highlight is how much and how often Aqua-as-Hikaru looks like Ai in these panels. I can't put my finger on what it is, but that similarity always makes me feel so warm and sad whenever I see it. For as much as he struggles with his relationship to her, Aqua really is his mother's son through and through.

and. man. what even is there to say about that scene in the rain and everything that follows. I was't sure if the murder/suicide was going to be featured in the movie but even the brief snippet of it that we got and that barrage of scene titles and Kamiki's silent scream… whoof. shit like this makes me really hope we get to see mengo illustrate a horror manga someday because i think she would absolutely kill it.

We cut back to reality to see Aqua reading the script and in perhaps the most interesting swerve in this chapter, we see that he has once again reverted to his double black hoshigans. And uh, am I going to sound like a terrible person if I say I'm really glad for this? LOL.

Obviously I would rather Aqua not be experiencing Suicidal Ideation (Bass Boosted) 24/7, but it's kind of a relief to see that one single conversation wasn't enough to totally shake Aqua out of that headspace. I've talked a lot about how frustrating I find it that 'Ruby finds out Aqua is Gorou' is treated as the finale to her black hoshigan arc and every ongoing thread, internal and external, attached to it was dropped like a rock with no further interrogation. It robbed Ruby of the opportunity for some really important growth and, imo, was just shitty for Kana and Memcho who were treated extremely poorly by her and got no apology for it. I was really worried this would be the case for Aqua as well and that his own dip into that rancid headspace would end on a wet fart which would really sting given just how little insight we've gotten into him this arc. But this chapter makes it clear that while some cracks have started to form in his armor, he's not in the clear just yet.

i mean, even if he was permanently back to one white star, aqua is such a little freak regardless………………………….

What this means in the long term is a little hard to pin down, both because we've had so little insight into Aqua's headspace this arc and because the exact nature of black hoshigan as a symbol has always been a little Calvinballed, but in this context and for Aqua specifically, I think we can read this as his conviction in the messy endgame of his revenge play being shaken up. I, personally, have been reading the black hoshigan as of late as an expression of the sort of futureless despair that can become suicidal ideation, at least for Aqua; since immediately after Ai's death, we have gotten incredibly strong hints that Aqua is suicidal, his guilt-fueled desire to die and his desperate want to experience a happy future at war within him. He more or less explicitly says as such in 106, expressing that this break in their relationship is necessary for Ruby to be able to live on 'after he's gone' - which strongly implies that Aqua's revenge play is intended to end with his death.

Knowing that Ruby is Sarina wasn't quite enough to shake his conviction, but their talk in 143 was. I do think Ruby just giving him some straightforward affirmation was a good starting point but I also can't help but wonder, with the context that his white stars were not indicative of a permanent change, if hearing just how deeply Ruby still relies on 'Gorou's' presence in her life struck a nerve for him. Paraphrasing her from 143, she straight up says Gorou is the one who gives her life meaning. And if that's how it is, what exactly will happen if he's gone again..?

Obviously this is all still speculation because even when I am begging on hand and knee Akasaka is refusing to give us Aqua introspection but at this point I have to make a guess at SOMETHING if i am going to say anything remotely coherent about aqua in this arc, so

ANYWAY!! AQUA AND KANA HAVING A NORMAL ASS CONVERSATION FOR THE FIRST TIME IN GOD KNOWS HOW LONG!!! Ngl, it did give me a bit of a chuckle to see Kana voice the question of whether Aqua was getting too immersed in his role, given that people were accusing her of that back during the first round of the RBKN conflict.

I was also really surprised to see Aqua just outright say that yeah, he is at least flirting with suicidal ideation. Like - that's the first time he's said that out loud, to anybody??? In 143 he voices the less damning but still not great sentiment that he feels guilty for being alive but this is to my knowledge the first time Aqua has expressed his suicidal ideation out loud, let alone to anyone else. And… fuck, man! That's an absolutely terrifying thing to hear a friend say. No wonder Kana reacts like she does.

Because of my powers of Claire-voyance (read: basic pattern recognition and being in fandoms for 15+ years), I'm pretty sure people are going to be Very Mean to Kana about the way she chooses to respond to Aqua here but honestly? Not only did this tough love response feel very IC for her, but the clumsiness of it felt very honest to me. I think a lot of people in fandom lately just want characters to talk like fucking therapists all the time and have the Correct And Unproblematic Response to… well, situations like this. But Kana is an 18 year old girl who has her own share of issues and her friend she knows is dealing with his own huge amount of baggage just casually dropped an "i wanna kms" on her. All things considered, I think she handles it surprisingly well.

Because like… look at what Kana really says to Aqua here. She gives him some of their usual banter to diffuse the tension but then makes herself very clear: she does not want Aqua to hurt himself and makes him promise that he won't. It's clumsy and rough in the way Kana often is, but I think the important part - her sincere care for Aqua as her friend - really does shine through.

also cute that other people caught: Kana squishing Aqua's face seems to be an intentional callback to one of their on-stage interactions in Tokyo Blade, right down to Aqua making a identical scrunchyface to Kana. Extremely cute. I love it when Aqua is cute <3

Kana also being a person able to shake Aqua out of his black hoshigans also leans into something I've been hoping is going to pay off for a while now; the idea that Aqua's salvation is not going to come from any one, singular character but from the many different people who Aqua has built relationships with coming together when he needs them to support him. One of the things OnK has continually highlighted is the way isolation and lacking support systems warp and damage people's mental health and I think it would play excellently into that theme to have Aqua's support net, so to speak, to be wide enough to catch him no matter where he falls.

the product placement was very stupid but i did laugh pretty hard at it and then immediately go buy myself some potato chips so i guess it worked. genius mangaka aka akasaka.

All jokes aside, the note their talk ended off on was so lovely too. Aqua being honest enough to admit that being with Kana is fun and Kana getting all dokidoki and then quietly admitting she feels the same when she's alone… cute! But more than that, it highlights something about the AQKN dynamic I think is really important, regardless of whether their relationship is romantic, platonic, in laws, mlm/wlw hostility or whatever else; Kana is his friend and he can just be a normal boy and have normal fun with her without any ulterior motives. It's something Aqua doesn't really have in any of his other relationships so getting a reminder of that and what it means to Aqua was really good.

honestly i think i am just so starved of nice things happening to my son that seeing him opening up to one of his friends and admitting he has fun (HIS LAUGH!!!!!!) was like a shot of heavenly ambrosia for me. please can hoshino aqua have just one nice day.

Ruby looks unusually solemn while she's praying, which is interesting. She's been pretty bright and high energy since 141ish so I'm curious what has her looking so comparatively dour. She's praying at a shrine, too, which means there's probably something on her mind. Nik (@akane-kurokawa) theorized that she's anxious about the upcoming scenes in the movie (LIKE, YOU KNOW, HER MOM'S DEATH) and until we get further insight on that, that's what I'm gonna assume too.

putting aside how Shrimptresting it is that Kamiki turned up out of nowhere like that, I can't help but note a certain horrible parallel between Uehara meeting young Hikaru in the rain with a black umbrella and Kamiki doing the same for his daughter…

cannot wait for that entire talk to get offscreened. lol.

Genre: mostly fluffy and slightly romantic (it is ideal types after all wink wink)

Pairing: Kyoya Ootori/Hikaru Hitachiin/Kaoru Hitachiin/Tamaki Suoh/Takashi Morinozuka x GN!Reader

Notes: So, I’m going to assume you meant to type Kyoya instead of Kyoka (i thought of Kyoka Jiro brom BNHA), to make that clear beforehand! Also thanks for the compliment! I’m glad you enjoy what I write, it makes me happy seeing that people enjoy it.

Otherwise, this sounded kinda fun! I will say, though, that this will be based on how I see the characters and how they are written. I haven’t read enough of the manga to get a super in depth grasp of their extreme inner selves (if you know what I mean), but I have finished the anime a multitude of times - I think I can get it pretty good, due to that.

if you’re shy, he can play up his princely role and be your knight in shining armor!

if you aren’t willing to push through his stuff, he won’t want to be with you

he wants support, no disregarding it

he doesn’t get much from the people he lives with, so if his significant other isn’t going to support him, expect to be dropped

otherwise, please support this boy.

that, and if his grandma doesn’t love you, expect to be kept a secret

if his dad loves you, though, then you’ve got a new father figure along with a boyfriend

intelligence isn’t necessary, but common sense might be

especially if you’re a commoner

with the way he can be, he needs someone to tie him down a bit

someone that understands how things work

(i’m really just putting this out there now, but every person here loved something about haruhi that would be universal no matter if it was or wasn’t haruhi)

it definitely helps if you can open him up to a new culture, too

he is a curious person, so i don’t doubt that he’d love to hear about any customs that my differ from his

especially if you have a certain religion or ethnicity

speaking if which, i do think that he would try to adjust his mannerisms to adjust to you and your family’s mannerisms

he (surprisingly) doesn’t come off as a player, so i do think that the way he handles himself reflects his ideal plan

whatever happens in the future does, but he wants to marry you.

i also don’t think he would care too much about gender (after a bit)

but he may be a little rough with pronouns and preferences in the beginning

if you can debate with him, you’ve got him 

especially if you can debate with him on certain topics

that, in theory, shows your understanding of complex ideas

he has to constantly handle big situation after big situation due to tamaki and the club’s antics, so a level head would be much appreciated.

there’s a small portion of me that just knows

that if you didn’t even get along with tamaki in the slightest, you’d likely be ignored

like, if you find him annoying, that’s fine

kyoya can find him annoying, too

but if you absolutely hate his guts, you are likely not going to go along too well with him

the two of them are an unconventional team so to tear them apart is to topple the japanese high school equivalent of royalty

that would drive him up a wall, but i can imagine that since they are a team

that you would be dragged into club activities whether or not you are a member

otherwise, please talk with him

kyoya, though driven, is also extremely unaware of his health (in a way that he ignores it)

so he needs someone to pull him back and get him to realize his worth outside of grades and gaining his father’s approval

he isn’t the best with emotions, so he may be tempted to buy copious amounts of gifts to compensate for hi slack of understanding

but arguments with his might get a little bit...on the threatening side?

but i highly doubt that he is gonna fall back, especially if you cave first

he isn’t the most emotionally unintelligent, really

i’m gonna say it

mans is most definitely a tough read

like really

but there is one thing that i just k n o w he loves

he loves to be the protector

really, just looking at the way that he approaches situations with honey and haruhi proves this

even the rest of the club at times, in all honesty

so he’d like someone he can protect

(not at all times, tho) 

(he is well aware of the lengths you’d go to in order to make sure that you walk out of a situation in pristine condition) 

but still-

at least just let him help you 

his love language is very obviously acts of service, so anyone that is willing to allow him to do so would be great

now we get to honey-senpai

ik it’s a common thread amongst everyone here, but this (next to the twins) would be the most prominent

honey’s judgement hasn’t often been wrong

and he’s really welcoming, so if you tip off honey’s radar imagine yourself cut from the list in general

seriously

you absolutely, positively, truly have to get along with mori’s precious cousin

(and do note, kissing ass gets you nowhere in this scenario)

that, and if you get along with kids in general

i see him as the kind of guy that would really like kids, despite the fact that some can get super scared of him

he’s really a sweet guy, so he needs someone sweet with him

like, if you have a younger sibling or extended family member that is like

a toddler, let’s say

and you can play with them and make them happy, even generally caring for them

yeah, that will make him happy

really happy

i also seem his as the type to like someone a little more...quiet

not like a bookworm (strictly, at least)

but like, someone that is more introverted 

and can also hold their own in classes

not genius level, but hopefully you get the gist

if you could hold a joke and have a sense of humor, too

but unlike kaoru, he isn’t going to be the type to ignore that at most times

(particularly upon first meeting)

if you can take a joke, that’s makes you attractive

if you can tag along with the twins’ pranks?

even more so

(again, particularly to hikaru)

willing to clown anyone else just because you want to?

yep, check that off the list as well

really if you can let loose, he will be drawn to you for it

otherwise, though, what he wants isn’t going to be the most ideal for him

it may take kaoru to point it out, possibly even mori or honey, but he needs someone to bring him down

he can get a little egotistical when something continually goes his way

but when that is immediately dashed, he gets mad

not really violent, rather passive-aggressive and insulting

he knows, when willing to acknowledge it especially, that he needs someone to calm him

call him out on what he’s done, tell him that it isn’t right.

remind him that the way that he is acting is only going to cause more harm than good

help him acknowledge where he needs help

help him develop himself and himself alone

help him come to terms with others, too

really, he needs someone that can take a joke, make a joke, and knows when to avoid joking altogether

(that may seem like a stretch to him, though)

another stipulation:

you HAVE TO get along with kaoru

HAVE TO.

there is no debate here, really

i remind you of being able to aid him in pranking others with him and kaoru

but that also means that he has to trust you enough to tell you anything about him

only kaoru and a select few others know how he really feels, and how he really processes everything, and how he really grew up and the feelings that came with it

so he also HAS TO trust you

and kaoru respecting you and liking you is the first step

in regards to appearance, though, i do feel like he would be a little more particular to it

he would budge, it believe that all of the host club members definitely have their moments but mean well

but i also do think that your appearance may be the first thing to grab his attention

i’m thinking he’d be drawn more to people that look similar to the models that his mom uses in fashion ad campaigns

to be specific, those from active wear ads

i don’t know why, but i feel like he’d like someone who looks like they take care of themself

but really, while that may be what draws his attention, it would come down to your personality

(i really felt the need to place this here especially)

(no clue why but i just get the feeling that the twins would be way more judgemental from the get-go) 

to make it clear, though, he may get picky and a little nasty, but he means well

which makes it even weirder when it comes to arguments

there will be days where he will die on his hill of choice

he’ll refuse to listen, refuse to acknowledge you even

possibly even go to kaoru and proceed to make a fool of you without telling him the whole truth

(only for kaoru to pull him back)

he would be likely to do what kyoya might here

going to bed angry would definitely be something that he may do, but i also feel that he’d have enough awareness to settle it just a little bit

which leads to the other side

he can also be very gentle about it

(i have to draw another parallel to tamaki here)

this side is one in which he would be likely to at the very least ease thing sdown enough to sleep in the same bed

i see him as the type of hold you close to him, cheek to chest

so i find that he would be sleeping in the same bed, but on the complete other side and his back facing you

settled just enough to calm the situation

only then would he be willing to settle the situation the next morning

but in general, he isn’t going to pay much attention to you if you don’t have a sense of humor

really, he just wants to relax with someone that can make him feel safe and comfortable

someone that can bring out the best in him and give him space when needed

as well as help him become the best version of himself without it being strictly ‘hikaru and kaoru’ 

Kaoru Hitachiin

gonna say it again, definitely think kaoru would go for someone with a sense of humor

but he’d also want them to draw the line when necessary

and not be solely focused on humor and pranks

it’s all fair, really, but he already sees enough of the shallow image that he and his brother put on for the attendees of the club

so to only put your attention onto that would definitely make him

well...

kinda hate you

he is definitely more emotionally aware than hikaru is, so he’d be the one to step back and see you for more

your humor would be the signal

your personality would be the habit

and your reactions to him would solidify his interest in you

to be patient is to grab his attention

and intelligent

unlike hikaru, i imagine that he would be more interested in things that are the complete opposite of what he puts on for show

he doesn’t care about how other girls react to him and only that, he’d also care about appreciation for his achievements

which is also what he would seek in a partner

someone who can appreciate him, as well as appreciate themselves

that also applies to grades

he finds someone smart to be attractive

but that is still only something small

he would definitely be the one to pay less attention to physical appearance, too

he would still be picky 

(sadly) 

but he would also be quicker to ignore that and put more of his focus onto your mind, reactions, and the tiny little things that you do in your everyday life

but i do find that he would focus on your appearance in a different manner

like, appreciating the little acne scars and moles on your face

if you have a port-wine stain, too

that would intrigue him

even something as simple as a little mark that looks similar to one would draw his attention

that and any modifications and stuff like your eyebrows

i also feel that he’d be drawn to someone who is a bit thicker

like, muscular, heavier, has a build to suit that, etc.

stuff like that

really just any body that has a bit more space on it

and i do think he would really like body modifications

idk why i just..do

he seems like he’d like a slight divide in appearance in general, honestly

otherwise he is most definitely going to pay attention to how you help others

as much as he loves hikaru, the way he handles things (as well as a majority of the host club too, tbh) is really not great

not great in the slightest

handling things with utmost patience but also trying to take into account the person you’re helping just...

it leaves him flustered.

in arguments, too, that would be important

he can have a bit of a fiery temper at times, so to have someone that can bring him down would be great

he’d also appreciate it if his partner would be the type to tackle the issue before it gets out of hand

like, he wouldn’t want to go to bed angry but he wouldn’t be above it 

(at least for one night)

he wants to rest with you, he wants to cuddle you in bed and give you a goodnight kiss on the cheek

he wants to be gentle and sweet with you

but again, he and hikaru do have some similarities that aren’t too great in hindsight

so to combat that, someone that can handle things like these in a composed manner would be great

kaoru really wants to spoon with you and sleep well and wake up to your sleepy eyes in the morning, so please- 

no, really tho

he wants someone that can separate him from his brother and treat him as his own person

someone he can trust with his worst secrets and most awful insecurities and worries

someone who can treat him like a king but also knows when to get him to step down and draw the line

someone that can carry themself with a good sense of humor but a well-rounded sense of when to cut the crap

Hey there! Thanks for sending in your ask! With ‘all of Inazuma Eleven Go’ I’m assuming you meant the Raimon team, since I don’t think you meant all the characters that ever appear… also I have Raimon feels right now so shh, let me be.

Raimon actually has had sleepovers before multiple times - although most often it's in a more serious context, for example during their Chrono Stone travels or Fifth Sector-approved training camp, and then it's an early bedtime and a bit too much stress to give it a real 'sleepover feel'. 

It actually started with, surprisingly enough, Hamano! The team already knows that he's outside often, and would rather take a walk than play a video game - it's obvious, with how much time he spends fishing, and his holidays usually filled with going on hikes or camping (he has a lot of fun stories to tell and the first-years love listening to him). Therefore it's not really a surprise when it's revealed that he likes going stargazing sometimes. It's after morning practice when he mentions a meteor shower that very weekend that he's planning on watching. The first-years are, as usual, in awe.

Hamano, being the awesome senpai he is (he's trying to start a competition but so far the other senpai aren't going along with it. They all know Sangoku is everyone's favorite, anyway), sees their excitement and asks them whether they want to join.

That's the first time they have a real sleepover just for fun, although it only includes about a third of the team.

Shinsuke, Hikaru and Tenma are absolutely down for it from the get-go, Kariya ends up asking for permission from his guardians at the orphanage and being most excited out of all of them (he hasn't really had sleepovers before, being the antisocial butterfly he was before Raimon), Tsurugi gets dragged along by Tenma after Yuuichi finds out and arranges it. Aoi is more than welcome too, and she invites Midori along when the older girl expresses an interest. Then the last two, Nishiki (threatened or invited by Midori, they're not actually sure) and Hayami (because Hamano wouldn't let him stay behind, obviously).

They crash at Hamano's house and have a grand time playing soccer in the backyard (and somehow Midori gets the best score out of them all? How does she do it? No one knows) and making dinner together. Afterwards, they head out to a nearby park where the light pollution is at a minimum in the city to watch the meteor shower. All of the first-years are falling asleep on their feet by the end of it, and as the good senpai they are, their friends ensure they get in bed safely and proceed to draw on their faces.

The week after, none of the first-years can stop talking about it, and how much fun they had (even Tsurugi is smiling and, of course, promptly teased by everyone, especially Shindou). Hamano keeps laughing about the pictures they took (exhausted first-years make for great pictures, who knew) and it's unanimously decided that it should happen again. That idea is put aside for the time being because they have to focus on an important match, and after, the start of the Winter Road Tournament.

Which is why no one expects it when their coach announces a training camp for the weekend, a couple of weeks later. They're all excited for it, though - at this point the only training camp they had was the one planned by Fifth Sector, and, well. Enough said.

Endou makes it clear that beyond training, it's also team building (which might be inspiration for Tenma, years in the future) and that they're encouraged to have fun together too. The first-years take it to heart.

The weekend starts off well - it's held at Raimon Jr. High and Endou has called up some of his friends to help with training. By the end of the day all the kids are in a good mood and cooking dinner together is quite the interesting experience, most likely only saved by Sangoku being in charge. After dinner they have the rest of the evening off and, surprisingly, don't spend it playing soccer (although Tenma puts up a good fight, but he's overruled).

Instead they watch a movie, not without some arguing about which one precisely (no one wants a horror movie, Kariya, Hayami seems ready to cry at the thought). Sangoku and the managers are in charge of snacks, Amagi is enlisted by Hikaru, Shinsuke and Tenma to help push the couches together and cover the floor in pillows, Shindou ends up sitting in an armchair and doing absolutely nothing (this is the first time his team calls him a lazy rich kid and Kirino laughs so hard he cries), Kurama is criticizing everything and everyone until Kurumada shuts him up with a pillow to the face, and Ichino is filming everything.

They watch the movie, if it can be called that, because people will not shut up. Kurama keeps on criticizing everything and everyone. Shinsuke gets startled by everything that happens on screen even though it's not a scary movie. Kariya pulls on Kirino's hair because he's 'blocking the screen', nevermind that Kariya is sitting on the couch and Kirino on the floor, and it's all downhill from there. Kirino is inspired by Kurumada's actions earlier, and promptly shoves a pillow in Karoya's face. Cue the pillow fight. Multiple people (Tsurugi and Shindou) try to stay out of it and fail horribly. There are no survivors.

In the end they finish the movie, and whoever decided on a sad movie will be murdered when they've recovered from the emotional damage it gave them. Even Tsurugi is crying. The only one who isn't is Hikaru and it terrifies them all while simultaneously reminding them, right, he's related to the international mad soccer criminal lost in space. It explains a lot, honestly.

They're sent off to bed an hour before midnight and of course it takes another thirty minutes before they're actually, y'know, in bed. The next problem is that none of them actually shut up - there's about six different conversations going on. They're in sleeping bags in the gym and that place echoes. Sangoku tries to get them all to settle down but fails, until Akane offers to tell them all a story (she has help from Midori in shutting them all up and Raimon is, once again, reminded why their managers are both terrifying and amazing). It's? Surprisingly good? They expected something a bit vague, with her love for aliens and conspiracies, but it's a captivating mystery tale that leaves them all genuinely invested by the end. Thankfully it also helps them calm down enough to sleep and with the exception of some whispered conversations, they all settle down quickly.

The next night is a bit different - training went quite similar, but this time, after dinner, Endou and his friends have organized something. A test of courage through the school.

Raimon initially expected it to be just Endou and the handful of people that have been helping in their training so far. They were wrong.

(When Endou sent out a message asking for volunteers, EVERYONE responded. Getting a new pass at scaring the new Raimon? Hell yeah.)

And when Raimon, young or old, has something in mind, they go for it.

They get the kids to scream. Whoever gave Fudou free reign with the fake blood should get a life sentence. Natsumi plays out a scene immediately afterwards of a nice, kind woman, helping settle their nerves with some of her cooking. Except as usual it tastes horrid and when the kids look closer, they find the red food coloring that they, sadly, don't appreciate after Fudou's scene. Afterwards it's unanimously decided that Fudou and Natsumi are NEVER allowed in the same room without supervision again.

The rest of the test of courage goes a bit better, although even Kidou is mystified on how Fubuki covered the entire main hall in (fake?) snow, and cleaned it up in like ten minutes after? How? Endou decides not to ask when he sees Fubuki's perfectly innocent smile. Anyway, the kids have been split up in multiple teams of three (whoever put Tsurugi with Hayami and Sangoku clearly has a death wish) and hearing other teams scream from further into the school is NOT encouraging, although in the end they all get through it. By the end they all meet in the soccer stadium and it turns out that they all got a different key to the final puzzle. It takes some teamwork to solve it, but they manage, and are absolutely exhausted by the end of it and incredibly relieved that no one died.

They head to bed soon afterwards this time, and it's quite different from the day before. The entire team ends up sharing their experiences during the test of courage and talking about it, talking about what they learnt, gaining some new ideas for hissatsu techniques (Midori was somehow inspired by the terror duo that was Fudou and Natsumi and it's both wonderful and terrifying at once). The night, and the training camp in general, ends on a good note and somehow without nightmares.

Afterwards it becomes more common for the team to have sleepovers, although still quite rare - there's nineteen of them and coordinating something like that is an absolute mess, especially when they slowly start moving onto High School. They manage once or twice a year, though, usually either through training camps or birthday parties. Pillow fights are common, most often started by Kariya and Kirino, Midori and Nishiki, or whoever gets annoyed by Kurama. Sangoku is put in charge for dinner for good after some disastrous attempts by other members. Some of their most effective strategies are created during sleepovers, when they can spend hours on a group discussion (Shindou's mind is wonderfully chaotic and when they get him rolling, he will ramble anyone's ear off). The sad movies continue too, somehow? They never do end up figuring out who brings the DVDs. In later years, sleepovers (very rarely) are moments for heart-to-heart talks between all of them (Tsurugi finally opens up and Tenma literally cries from relief at that, and Kariya quietly shares some of his most important memories of his parents).

They all love their sleepovers but also agree that it's probably best that it doesn't happen too often. It's exhausting for them, they're chaotic enough on a normal day.

(Still, Endou's initial plan at team bonding goes off better than he ever could have expected.)
