Read some news about “Wednesday” and Jenna Ortega gleefully talking about how they will get rid of romance next season, and several comments (many of them coming from men) cheering about how the show will now become “watchable” and worth seeing and I’m just…
The “strong cool women need no romance in their stories” take is not as progressive as people think it is. It basically devalues a type of story that many people, particularly women, enjoy and connect with. There is a longstanding tendency to dismiss things associated with femininity as inferior, which is in itself a form of sexism. This only contribute to the gender bias present in media consumption and criticism. And to see someone like Jenna reinforce that in this day and age is sooooo outdated. Girl, this aren’t the 2000s or even 2010s.
Suggesting that strong female characters do not need romance only imply that a woman’s strength is somehow compromised by romantic involvement. It just perpetuates harmful stereotypes about what constitutes “strength”, implying that emotional depth and relationships are signs of weakness.
All of this isn’t to say that every female character needs a romantic plotline. A diversity of stories and experiences is crucial. But devaluing stories that do include romance perpetuate the idea that stories centered around women and their experiences are less valid, less serious, or less worthy of attention.

female protagonists will literally go through 30 life altering traumas at the age of 16 and you ppl still have the audacity to call them annoying bc they cry about it and act like teenage girls

You can’t win as a woman in fiction. Be too positive, you become a Mary Sue, have flaws and those flaws are why almost nobody likes you. Be moderate, you have wet-cabbage personality, be exuberant, you are an unrealistic example. Have strong morals, and you’re badly developed, be morally corrupt and you’re hated with such vigour fans will send hate mail to the actress who plays the character. Be kind and soft and in love, you’re a representation of sexism, be cruel, harsh and cold and you’re just a bitch. Be a complex, realistic, ambiguous character, and either your flaws or your positive traits will be ignored or blown out of proportion and into oblivion. There is no winning for female characters.

I love you hated female characters. I love you female characters who are flawed. I love you female characters who mess up and try to do the right thing after. I love you female characters who get the undeserved vitriol from fans. I love you female characters who fans completely condemn because of one mistake they made. I love you female characters who fans completely condemn because of one mistake they made as a child. I love you female characters who people blame for ripping apart their ships instead of the larger forces that be. I love you female characters who get all the hate as the male characters who do worse in canon get absolutely none. I love you female characters who get hated on because they told a man “no.”

people make fun of the "oh you only hate her because she's a WOMAN" crazy feminist mentality but yeah actually you guys do only hate her because she's a woman a lot of times. for every hated female tv character there's ten male tv characters who are a million times worse and still given at least the "intriguing morally grey character" treatment if not straight up praise. for every hated female celebrity in real life there's one hundred famous men who have done worse and don't get half the hate she does. for every hated female politician, for every hated female historical figure, for the women you know in real life and on and on.
