What's March for Raph? A list of 31 prompts (words or short phrases) for the month of March, all Raph centric, open to any iteration. You can draw, make gifs, write stories, write essays, short videos, whatever you can think of! No pressure at all to complete all the prompts, it's less of a checklist more of an inspiration board. The point is just to celebrate a character we love and also meet other Raph fans, that's really the best part.

information: tmntgust is a tmnt based writing event similar to events like inktober and tmntember. posting for the event will begin on august 1st, 2025. to give participants more time to make something for each day the prompt list is going up in advance. this event is open to all tmnt iterations, including fan iterations. there are 41 prompts. one for each day of the month of august and 10 bonus prompts. feel free to alter any prompt here as you please or sub in one of the bonus prompts for any you dont like/dont feel inspired for (my feelings wont be hurt). there are no rules for this event, so feel free to do as many prompts as you like, or feel free to skip around to your heart's content. when you post a work to tumblr, feel free to tag this blog and ill reblog it (provided it is not nsfw bc im not comfortable with that, especially for tmnt stuff). closer to the beginning of the event ill have a collection on ao3 up that you can add your works to if youd like.

Donnie finds an old robot vacuum cleaner, adds some upgrades . . . and then loses it

Someone follows Mikey home

Donnie’s hands are injured: his brothers have to help out while he heals

Raph comes home in bad shape

A sewer tunnel caves in, and Leo is trapped

There is a leak somewhere in the sewers above the Lair and the water is getting in. No one from the city has come to fix it on their own, so Donnie has to do it.

Turtles go undercover on a passenger train to find a person of interest (killer, thief, mutant,time traveller, etc. could be a long ride or a short one)

An item that used to belong to Hamato Yoshi appears and the turtles must mount a mission to retrieve it for Splinter (whether he was Hamato Yoshi or not)

Future AU where one of the last surviving core turtles finds a photograph of their family that they haven’t seen in years

200 years in the future, a group of scientists discover the location of the turtles’ lair, looking for information that might help them in their current plight (The Batman (2004) cartoon season 4 episode 7 is the inspiration for this)

After an altercation with their enemies goes wrong, the turtles find themselves stranded at sea in a small sailboat. What could possibly go wrong?

Beach episode! Let the kids have fun!

The turtles parkour through the city, having the time of their lives. Until one turtle almost becomes street pizza and they have to calm them and each other down

Leo and Donnie go on a trip to upstate New York to witness a celestial phenomenon (northern lights, comet, moon shenanigans, stargazing, etc) (maybe the others come along for the ride, but they better bring snacks)

Casey meets the turtles in a Monster Hunter AU. He’s been hunting them as monsters and now he’s finally found them *cue dramatic music*

Time travel! Donatello has just invented a time machine! Unluckily for the others, it works! However, the timing could not be worse as New York is attacked by something and they desperately need Donatello back.

Mikey follows a stray cat through NYC. He has the weird feeling it’s trying to show him something . . .

Give one of the turtles fantasy magic. They’re having a blast with it, but is this a gift or a curse?

One of the turtles opens up about being afraid every time they go out to fight off villains. The others reassure them that this is what bravery is

Raph is bored. Unfortunately (?) for Mikey, Raph has a solution to that

One of the turtles gets a cursed (or blessed) item thrust upon them from the owner of an antique store

One of the turtles takes respite beneath a structure in the middle of some poor weather (rain or snow). While there, they spot a creature that should not exist (be it extinct, mythical, or other). Curiosity gets the better of them and they decide to follow it.

There’s a large mutant creature running around in NYC, wreaking havoc. The turtles have decided to step up to the plate and handle it, but they discover that not everything is as it seems

During an altercation, a turtle gets knocked into a pile of garbage. They see a bright flash of light, and emerge to find that the other turtles and their adversary are all gone. Where did everyone go? And how do they get them back? Can they get them back?

Someone gets hit with a truth spell or serum and cannot stop being brutally honest. This causes problems when they need to save face, keep out of trouble with splinter, or keep important info from an enemy.

Something is in the Lair and the turtles need to find it before it finds them.

Donnie receives a strange signal and he’s not sure what it is.

Local mob boss receives an ominous letter at the claws of an unusual messenger bird. Somehow this becomes the turtles’ problem and they’re not happy about it.

Bonus!

One of the turtles gets lost in the sewer and the remaining people have to go get them out

Someone has a really bad day (ex: injury, lost item/pet, attacked, lost, etc). The rest of the family try to make it better.

One of the turtles gets a tattoo or piercing?

POV you’re the turtle’s vehicle.

Someone turns invisible for a full day.

Farmhouse trip!

Raph has a secret collection that he’s afraid of his brothers discovering. Unfortunately, Mikey does not like leaving his brothers’ secrets as secrets.

3.) What was your first impression of [TMNT iteration]?

[1987 cartoon] I was 7. There were flying Cadillacs and lasers and Raphael was sassy. I was hooked.

[1990s movies] I was 10. I already worshiped Jim Henson. When I saw my favorites winking and crying and smiling and kicking ass, I was in love forever.

[Archie's Comics] I was 14. On a roadtrip, I found a copy of TMNT Adventures #33. They were traveling through Nepal. There was a four-armed Tiger God Mutant named Katmandu. Raphael had a *girlfriend.* Michelangelo was silly about yaks. I needed more comics. ASAP.

[Next Mutation] I was 17. And a complete live-action turtle-snob. Henson would never have allowed these costumes out of whatever basement spawned them. And the scripts! Ugh! Where was the cinema-grade fight choreography? The award-winning narratives? The atmospheric lighting and the *drama* of the City at Night?!

[Mirage Comics] I was 20. They beat Leo to a bloody pulp and threw him through the window--AT CHRISTMAS!! I started writing fanfic.

[2003 cartoon] I was 23. I was in love. The voice cast! The character design! The fidelity to the Mirage Space Arc! Oh God, to be alive at time like this!

[2007 movie] I was 27. I was vibrating. I bought a screen grab of early production art off of eBay. I couldn't wait for the advertisements to premiere to see my boys again. The artwork wasn't even close to the final designs. The resolution was blurry. I was still thrilled.

[IDW Comics] I was 31. I was bummed that Dark Horse Comics lost the bid to publish the TMNT comics to IDW. Dark Horse had a much stronger editorial department with consistently incredible writing. IDW was famous for spending their money on flashy cover artists and skimping on the interior art. I crossed my fingers and hoped I was wrong. [2012 cartoon] I was 32. Overworked, underpaid, and without cable or streaming. I missed the first season, but got a DVD from a friend. I was intrigued by the turtles, but repulsed by the human models. The CGI felt cold and cheap. I wouldn't return to give the show a proper watch until 2020.

[Bayverse movies] I was 34. I hated Micheal Bay's needlessly cluttered character designs for Transformers. I despised his "blurred action" fight sequences. I hated his simplistic dialogue. When I heard he was the director for the TMNT, my heart lit a cigarette and took a sip of gin. They were going to butcher my boys.

[Rise] I was 38. I saw the flat character designs. The boys were angular. Stagnant. The kind of thing that would end up low-rent animated. Splinter looked like a yellow-peril style stereotype. I gave up before I even heard the commercials.

[Mutant Mayhem Movie] I was 43. I had adored The Mitchels Vs The Machines and that same team was working on the new movie! The leaked first art made my heart warm with 90s vibes: Archie's characters, gawky turtles, attention to atmosphere, all kinds of vibrancy! Very excited!

[MM Tales of] I was 44. I didn't have the right streaming services to watch it. After the high of the film, the animation style looked cheap. No line weights. No rendering. Simplified versions of the "hand drawn" shapes of characters' faces somehow stopped feeling organic and looked more like bad drawings. I knew I was comparing it unfairly to the film. I told myself to hush. I had been 10,000% wrong about 2012 and about Rise. I was being a snob again and I knew it. .

Over the years, I've been so wrong about so many of my misgivings. Even Next Mutation had a ton of heart. I have been so spoiled by so many Turtle options. Between all the shows and the movies and the comics--AND THE FAN FIC AND THE FAN ART AND THE ROLEPLAYING AND AND AND... I shouldn't turn my nose up at anything anymore. I'm just gonna look like an idiot again when it turns out to be incredible. Just like every other time. Except for A Very Turtle Christmas. That shit is nightmare fuel.

31.) What is one piece of TMNT canon that you dislike/ignore?

Um, *looks at The Next Mutation* okay, I love TNM, but there are some things in that iteration I prefer to forget exist. Chief among them is when Leo claims they aren't brothers because they're not blood-related only so the show can set Venus up as a love interest. Unoriginal but it's been on my mind after reading the follow-up letters, because Donnie's first letter is particularly loud and uncomfortably icky feeling about this point.

And NM turtles are wdym your dad named her? your dad Splinter? did she not get separated till later? bringing out the whole shredder backstory (as well as the Dad is Hamato Yoshi vs Dad was Hamato Yoshi's pet rat) and inciting a panic probably from just some of the more easily frazzled members of both groups like Does that mean there might be another one? How many long-lost sisters do we have?!

I still need to watch the next mutation more anyways I really like the little sister venus au thing, Also for some reason I was very interested in making the bandanas like into hairstyles but I'm bad at it so I went simpler. I read a bayverse fic on lil sis venus, it was very cute. Too bad there isn't much more or-Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

it really sucks because its first season’s writing is unironically my favorite writing in the franchise. but then the show steadily gets messier and more inconsistent writing as it goes forward. especially in season 4. i wish i could defend it more but it is at the bottom for me. besides tnm ig

4, 87

i actually like the arcs in 87, but the thing with 87 is that … the plot isn’t the point! but i don’t consider that a flaw. the show is a comedy first, and it’s great at what it does. so yes, even if the plot episodes are pretty forgettable compared to the goofier episodes, it’s not the worst thing in the world. but it’s still number 4.

3, rise

rise is kinda weird because even tho most of the series is comedy filler like 87, it’s most known for its plot. but i think it earns that because sometimes the show will throw in episodes that foreshadow the big plot at the end of the season, and it handles it pretty well for the most part.

2, tales

i honestly really enjoyed the way the plots were set up in tales. since it’s pretty new, i won’t spoil it, but i think my only actual complaint was the framing devices they used. but otherwise it was pretty good.

1, 03

every once in a while, the show would have a hiccup writing-wise, but overall i liked the flow of the arcs and stories it was trying to tell. out of all the tmnt shows, 03 was the best at juggling several arcs at once and committing to giving them closure (cough. unlike 2012-).

this is so controversial i know. but i just get so frustrated with how the show handles leo and donnie’s writing specifically. they feel ooc half the time and there’s little consistency. and then raph and mikey (my favorites of the team) were sidelined a lot.

4, 2012

mikey has no character growth whatsoever and is an adhd stereotype. donnie’s development gets thrown to the background so you only notice it if you’re paying attention to him the entire time. leonardo gradually gets worse over the course of the series and we never see him get better. they couldn’t decide what to do with karai half the time. april’s arc got switched for a different one halfway through (i still love her tho). the only one with a decent arc is raph, and i still think it could’ve been better ://

3, 03

this is not a knock at 03. i just think that character growth wasn’t its priority. telling stories was. however we do occasionally see them go through arcs. most obvious is leo, but i also enjoy seeing raph get less hostile and trusting leo more over the course of the first season.

2, 87

you’d have to watch the whole show to see it, but there’s almost … an accidental ?? arc for each turtle??? raphael gets angrier up until it reaches typical raphael levels in red sky, donatello goes through ups and downs of wishing he was never mutated while still pursuing human-level knowledge, michelangelo early on in the show wished he was more human (he changes his mind after becoming human once, but the feeling lingers a bit sometimes), and leonardo goes through anxieties related to his team (he acts differently about being without them depending on the season). but even without considering development, their personalities are written fantastically and i love seeing how they interact with the world around them.

i grew up with this one. does it suck? oh yeah for sure lmao. but it’s nostalgic and i like a lot of the characters. and season 1 particularly is amazing. sucks for the rest of the show tho lol. i will unashamedly bully it.

In her debut series, Mei Pieh Chi's (Venus') culture & past were barely explored. The Next Mutation just didn't spend much time establishing her home or her father. Since she loses those so suddenly and so profoundly, it has to have had an enormous impact on her character and her perspective.

In Balance The Scales, my 2012 AU/mashup fic, the post-season-5-ish Turtles have also experienced an incredible loss. Their own father died violently not too long ago. So many of the big adventures that dominated their lives for so long are concluded. An aspect of directionlessness permeates their home.

The parallel losses of their father figures and their way of life will provide an understanding between Venus and the 2012 turtles even through barriers of language and culture.

That's what I'm excited to share: finding, against all odds, family again.

But also, they wreck a whole cargo ship and learn to fight with qi energy and they battle a god-tier dragon, so those are cool, too, I guess. 😉
