Two unhinged vs a decidedly hinged reaction

DEAN: *is all watery-eyed and weird when cas dies the first time*

CAS: *returns and is very, very Cranky (TM) and yelling at everyone*

Instead of being happy, relieved, or appreciative of one another's fighting spirit outright, they fall into a pattern of fighting and banter. They're full of fear, fatalism, and their own discordant Hail-Mary-style ideas.

And they disagree with each other. Their fear, in general, manifests in being short with one another and hilariously calling each other's plans stupid.

They're very immature and ill-equipped to handle caring about each other, basically. It's kinda cute.

They could say "thank you," or "I'm glad you're okay." Instead? Cas flies out of the gate, bossily laying into them about needing to be more careful. Later, he arrives at the hospital and calls the plan of fighting Lucifer stupid.

When Dean responds that Cas's plan is even stupider, Cas tells Dean that he wasn't worth rebelling for at all because he's a failure and should shut the Hell up.

Glorious.

There's so much Weird tension getting in the way of what should be a renewed brother-in-arms-friendship. It should be simple, a hearty hug between friends, some thuds on the back—you know, a simple "we made it, brother!" style of camaraderie.

Instead, they're weird about it.

And while Dean is usuallyweird (he's a weird, word-vomitey guy at heart), he's being epically weird in 5x03.

I'd say he's being even weirder than Cas is at times, and not just about his nervousness surrounding personal space.

It's everything.

It's even played for laughs a little bit. Cas says a lot of weird shit to the cop, and then somehow gains the cop's trust anyway.

Right after this, the cop calls Dean out, but not Cas.

"Uh, no, Kolchak."

In the end, Cas winds up having the advantage in this bizarre exchange. In a surprise twist, the officer has responded better to Cas's frank honesty than to Dean's sarcasm and indirectness.

But anyway, it's no wonder Dean's being odd. Man's Hella stressed.

Per the conversation with Sam at the end of 5x01, Dean is barely hanging in there. "He's trying." But he's also feeling the weight of his own fatalism. "I'll fight, but we haven't got a snowball's chance in Hell of winning."

And I personally think he's still anxious post-Cas's first death.

That's a frightening thing to contend with, that one of your strongest, "seemingly invincible" Superman allies can die. It rocks the tenuous stability beneath your feet, so to speak.

Here's the strangest thing: Cas asks Dean to go on a mission with him. But even after Cas straight-up tells Dean no angel would dare harm him, Dean assumes that they're both going to die anyway.

I think this speaks to Dean's issues focusing. His anxiety must be through the roof, because he's usually so good at hanging on to details like that.

There's also his guilt surrounding Cas facing Raphael alone the first time. And it's coming out this way.

This time, he's automatically cast himself in the role of being there alongside Cas, dying alongside him.

It's not until later that his denial falls away and the truth catches up to him, that Cas means to die alone:

Cas repeats himself, that the archangel wouldn't dare harm Dean:

This is not a revelation.

Cas told him as such right off the bat. But like in the scene with Chuck, Dean's brain prefers to dive straight into denial.

It's interesting for a character like Dean. He's VERY used to losing people, but with Cas, there's a creeping denial and disappointment clouding the whole thing.

There's probably already a crush there... it's coming out in watery eyes and hilarious ADHD-word vomit (Thelma-Louise, fussing about personal space and then getting into his personal space, Bert-n-Ernie-are-gay, last night on earth) because Dean doesn't know what to do with it.

He doesn't know how to handle the confusing mix of feelings. He had a lot of them when Cas died the first time. Now, where can that energy even go?

The face journey he goes on as he realizes Cas is expecting to die... again.

It's a little sad, tbh.

And then later, when they face off against Raphael, facing him together as Raphael enters "their" kitchen, Dean's fears all come out as jokes and banter again.

It's his preferred defense mechanism against strong emotions. He's worried, but he can't show it.

Another thing.

I think it's neat that they're squatting in this cute, dilapidated house.

Raphael appears in a kitchen, recreating the circumstances of Cas's first death in Chuck's kitchen.

Some other cute details about the house they're chosen. Dean has his usual cooler, but here he's put it near the hearth of the home, one of his motifs. He acts as bait, drawing Raphael nearer while Cas moves to attack him.

But the specter of the hearth is still meaningful.

And while Dean distracts Raphael, they lure him deeper into the home, a space they're controlling together.

And still, they banter. Cause they're immature and adorable.

DEAN: "Don't look at me it was his idea."

Aside// The lantern and the beer bottles.

Here, we get another glimpse of their symbols. For Cas, it's this dark lantern on the table; it's been on the table "with him"on his side" since the very beginning of squatting in this house.

It symbolizes both Cas himself and this concept of Dean waiting for him. "Where have you been?"

The fact that this lantern is OUT is a callback to Cas's death, and a nod to his current fatalism.

Actually, the house they're squatting in IS pretty cute. The table they sit at together is cute. Here we have the two of them, mutually aching over their absent fathers... and reeling over the painful, complicated brokenness and betrayals with their respective brothers (Raphael, Sam).

The inside of this house is "dead and dusty," but there's new growth just peeking into the window. Greenness. Renewal.

This living room, where they're spending time together, also contains important Dean-Cas symbols: empty chairs, lanterns, and an unlit hearth.

While the two of them are trying desperately to fix their respective families, they're automatically carving out their own living space together, instinctually, almost without knowing or trying.

It's also funny that we see some of the strife that will color their relationship. It looks like Dean wound up doing a lot of waiting around, and he's irritated about it.

Note the prominently lit empty Cas-chair. While Cas runs off to do his suicidal Heaven errands, Dean waits up for him in a room with a hearth and a conspicuously placed lantern.

Cas appears in front of the stairs. Later, these stairs will be prominently lit by the only lit lantern in the entire house.

Here we go. Dean and Cas return to face off against Raphael in the house they've come to bond in—in a home they control. Now, the stairs are highlighted by a homey, welcoming light.

It's the only lantern on.

It leads upstairs to the bedroom, or it's a nod to "Heaven" if you prefer that reading.

But it seems to me that this light is conspicuous like, despite the storm and the power outage, these two are carrying a secret torch for each other, a nascent longing to cobble a life together.

Raphael's pyrotechnics are exploding all the lights except this one, after all. Perhaps the lighted stairs represent them as a Heaven-Earth unit, Heaven + home, the one who guards the door + and the one who lights the hearth:

And goodness, some of these images are lovely.

Raphael breaks the window, letting the storm into the little nook they'd carved for themselves.

It's funny. It's almost like they instinctively gravitate to trying to fix/rebuild a home when they're together. They naturally want to fall into this weird... rhythm of life.

It's maybe a bit spooky for them, it maybe unnerves them, and they don't know what to do with that. They've both got so much baggage with their respective families that they mostly try to ignore it, and they get pissy and short with each other as a result of ignoring it and circling this...

...confusing thing.

That said, I love crossovers and absolutely adore OCs!

I love shipping dearly, but, unsurprisingly, it will be based on chemistry. I'm open to exploring new ships.

That said, I’m more than open to the idea of a pre-established relationship! And it doesn’t necessarily have to be a romantic one. I’m all for platonic, antagonistic, found family etc. kinds of dynamics... Just pop in my DMs, and I’m sure we can figure something out)

what i love about this exchange is that cas is initially logistically honest. he introduces a tactic — with dean around, they both stand a better chance. yet dean’s grievance is that cas is using him as a tool. dean’s life story? if he is not a sword to defeat, then he is a shield to protect. he thinks that’s all he means to cas in this plan. despite what they’ve been through emotionally, which they’ve of course kept in the dark, their relationship is still mainly an allyship.

but then cas pivots from logistical honesty to a blunt truth, just grazing the emotional. dean is useful as a tool and they have battled better side by side, but, all guards down, they’re also the only ones the other can rely on. cas has shown up every time for dean. he has been dean’s hope. cas needs that in return now, not to compensate — cas didn’t even bring up the risks he’s taken for dean like i expected — but because he trusts dean like no one else, and, with sam now gone, dean understands that.

In response to that article (US weekly) that is circulating out there,

1. I love that they agree that Buck and Eddie should just get together.

2. KR and TM are either idiots or liars.

Why do you ask? 

Because as someone who spent her life chasing tv shows containing good best friends relationship (be it m/f m/m or f/f) and brotherly relationships, this, whatever the writers and the showrunners created here in 9-1-1 with Buck and Eddie is far beyond best friends by mid s3 and was way past brotherly bond somewhere between that grocery store love spat to the kitchen scene to the romantic coded shooting scene in 4x13 (and that’s when both guys were “dating”).

I can give examples going on for miles and make endless comparisons (we have NCIS LA Callen and Sam, Chicago Fire Casey and Severide, Station 19 had Gibson and Miller, and while unbelievably controversial Steve and Danny in H50 were indeed brotherly based relationship because it had all the markers of that relationship that outweighed the old married couple routine.)

They are all brotherly/best friend oriented relationships, where the word “brother” was used regularly, they each had their roommates era - that we got to watch on tv and not covid enforced quarantine era off screen.

We had hugs aplenty, a lot of teasing and beer talks, relationship talks, double dates (even chenford been to one before they finally got together.), marriage, uncle titles being bestowed, bff-ing with the best friend’s significant other and oh so many things that color a relationship in platonic colors. 

Now let’s take those and compare them to Buck and Eddie’s relationship. 

We got three hugs in 3 episodes, and that’s in S2 2x18, S3 3x01, and 3x06. 

We haven’t seen proper beer hangout that didn’t involve black eyes since S3 on Albert’s birthday.

No relationship talks, unless it was to make sure the other side was agreeing that the other should break up with their significant other. (Eddie in 5x03, Buck in 5x18)

Neither one of them even got close to marriage (after Shannon died, I mean. And even she knew it wasn’t working with Eddie anymore.)

Buck is Christopher’s and Eddie’ Buck (”His Buck”) - but he is uncle Buck to Jee-Yun.

Buck only interacted with Ana twice and that was when he saw her (but didn’t talk to her) when she brought Christopher to the firehouse in 5x02, and the other time was when she called him to tell him Eddie’s awake.

And we have the famous dinner where Taylor didn’t eat but tried to be friendly along with Eddie for Buck in the Diaz household. But other than that Eddie had no desire to interact with her unless he absolutely had to.

Last but not least, all the pairs I named up there uttered the words “I love you” at least once. It was said easily, and "thanks for saving me" was said out loud, too. 

- Buck and Eddie, going into S6 not once uttered the words. And Eddie thanked Bobby for saving his life, but not once has he thanked Buck - at least not that we saw. (Not in 4x14, not in 5x14 - Buck saved Eddie so many times, but we never see any deep conversation or even a light hearted one that expressed “thank you for saving my ass out there”)

I can go on, but I think my point is made.

Please for the love of god get these two together, they’d be wasted on anybody else at this point. - Manifest with me ✨✨✨

I am 5 feet two inches of pure salt, I will always be up to rant about Emori and Clarke.

Emori:

She! Shamed! Murphy! For! Being! Raped!

I know it’s cool to say she didn’t realize it and blame it on Murphy for not saying the words ‘I was raped’, but she knew. He was acting different in that scene than in other scenes they’ve been in and he said the words ‘I had no choice’. 

I HAD NO CHOICE!

HOW IS THAT UP FOR DEBATE ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT SHE KNEW!?!

And then Season Four happened and I actually kind of liked their relationship and Emori in general, if I forgot about the previous mentioned victim blaming. They were cute together and loved each other and I was kinda iffy about her using the guy that broke in and lying about him, but it’s a very Murphy thing to do and was smart as hell and if I forgot about not liking her, I really liked it.

Sidenote: They slept together in the room MADE OF WINDOWS WITH NO CURTAINS! Like, do they have an exhibitionist kink? Do they just not give a single fuck? Was everyone else uncomfortable? Did they not notice two people going at it right in front of them? Were they enjoying the show? I NEED ANSWERS!

And then..... Season five. Emori is a bitch. Call me racist, call me a misogynist, call me wrong, I don’t fucking care. I love Murphy and she was a complete bitch to him and used his mental health issues against him. It’s partially projecting - I have mental issues, too, although their different to Murphy’s - and mainly because I love Murphy with my whole ass heart and he deserves None Of This^TM. Fuck her in 5x03, FUCK her in 5x08, just fuck her. I’ll never like her again, I’ll never ship Memori, I’ll never forget about that. She’s done too many fucked up things that I can’t and won’t forgive.

Clarke:

She constantly complains when she has no right to. SHE put herself in a position of power from the second she landed on the ground when no one asked her to. SHE took Lexa’s people and publicly went against her Mother, the Chancellor. SHE decided to pull the lever and not take responsibility for it. SHE continually puts herself in these situations where she’s in over her head and then complains about having no choice. 

Also, I didn’t really like Clexa? Like, I get it, representation of any kind matters, but I refuse to be thankful for a ship that doesn’t make sense and sucks. I want more bisexual characters, but I definitely don’t want Clarke representing me, which seems to be the thing whenever you share someone in common with a character, obviously the represent you and your beliefs based on something perfectly arbitrary, but whatever.

And she locked everyone out of the bunker!!!! And she’s CONSTANTLY abusive to Bellamy!!! And she refuses to take responsibility for her actions!!!! And she treated Wells like shit!!!!! And she doesn’t care about anyone but herself and occasionally her Motheri!!!! She doesn’t give a damn about Madi or she wouldn’t have shock collared her!!!!! Fuck her!!!!!!

1. Which character should teach you how to sword fight? I’m in between Bellamy and Indra because Bellamy is y’know... Bellamy, but I think I’d have to go with Indra just for the tenure. This is what she does.

2. Alie or Diyoza? Diyoza, certainly. ALIE’s not very redeemable whereas Diyoza is my Gen-Z queen.

3. You can watch the next season together with one character, who died in a previous season. Who do you choose? WELLS JAHA. We’d sit together watching S6 and bond over loving Clarke and knowing she deserves more.

4. What would you give your favourite character as a birthday present?

Can I give Clarke the gift of love, support, and peace of mind? Okay, if not that, something artsy fartsy for her to use, but beyond pencils or paper or paint or whatever, something fancy she’s never gotten to use before.

6. Moments that made you temporarily dislike characters, you usually like? Bellamy’s decision to put the flame in Madi made me temporarily dislike him, as well as Clarke’s decision to stay in Polis in early s3. Also all of Raven’s actions in 5x12.

7. Moments that made you like characters, you usually dislike? Kane’s quest for peace in S3 and being willing to work with the grounders made me like him more, all ALIE scenes were just so iconically acted even though I didn’t like her, I liked watching it.

8. Favourite Skaikru outfit? Clarke in the gray henley from Season 1. You know the one. Also Clarke’s jacket from 4x13/S5.

9. Favourite Grounder outfit? I loved Bellamy in Azgedan gear; also Lexa in the Commander’s big suit thing with the red sash that Octavia also wore for a hot second in Season 4 or 5. Oh, and idk if this is “grounder gear” but the blue jacket with the cross strap Clarke rocks in S2.

10. Grounder, Skaikru, Mountain Men or Wonkru aesthetic? Skaikru.

12. A character you’re completely indifferent about? At this point Kane. I liked him in S1 when he was the pseudo-antagonist, but S2 onwards he’s fizzled for me.

13. A character you want to like, but just can’t? Maya! I know she was a fan fave in Season 2 but every time I watch I just can’t connect with her.

14. Resurrect 3 of your favourite characters and kill off 3 of your favourite characters in exchange. Oooh, okay, I’ll resurrect Monty, Harper, and Lincoln and kill... Diyoza, Shaw, and Miller in exchange.

15. Favourite season aesthetic? In between S1 and S2, I love the scenery of S1 the most, but outfit and costuming aesthetic-wise, S2 was so well done from the grounders to the Mountain Men to Skaikru assimilating in with the grounders.

16. Favourite soundtrack moments? You know what I’m gonna say. “Knocking on Heaven’s Door,” It’s a masterpiece. “Kettering” by the Antlers in 1x13 is also great. Plus anything Tree Adams creates.

17. Favourite warpaint? Lincoln with the smears across his face while being taken by the Mountain Men.

18. Which characters would you want to befriend, if you were a character on The 100? I’ve answered this before and I think Monty and I would get along best.

19. Choose a character to get drunk with. Clarke, for sure. She’d drink me under the table but I’d get to see drunk!Clarke.

20. Would you rather live on the dying Ark or in the Bunker? The dying Ark, who the hell would pick the bunker? The Ark was a managed society with rules and no death arenas...

21. Ride a horse or drive the Rover? I’m not a fan of horse riding or driving, but I actually know how to drive so I’d pick the rover.

22. Who is worse, in your opinion: Dante or Cage Wallace? Cage, absolutely. Dante was interesting and compelling (my favorite villain, actually) because of his complexities, which Cage just lacks. Cage is straight-forward evil dude.

23. If your OTP isn’t canon: how do you want their first kiss to happen? This is actually from an ask I answered ages ago, but I’m just gonna copy/paste what I said because I think it still stands: “They’ll be sitting, maybe joking in That Bellarke Way^tm, and the shot will start as a Medium shot, and then the conversation gets slightly deeper than either of them is really comfortable with after all this time. Bellamy will lean in, slowly, testing if it’s okay, to see if she’ll pull back, and she doesn’t. She lets him kiss her, slow and sweet, and she kisses him back; it’s a close-up shot now. This kiss isn’t the intense middle-of-war type of kiss, but a slow, we-both-know-we’re-in-love-but-we-won’t-say-it-out-loud type of kiss because that’s all they can handle in their current states.”

24. Favorite rare pair? Is Princess Mech a rarepair? I love them, especially in Modern AU. Also, Niytavia.

25. Most badass fight scene? Indra and Bellamy in 5x10 is really good, Anya and Clarke in 2x04 is a contender, also Octavia in S4 where she murders those people with the hatchet.

Morgane! Your recaps are again on point and one of the few things that make me happy every week (only second to new episodes but that's hard to beat to be fair). Your 5x03 recap was the nail in the coffin and I started laughing so loud that my roommates gave me The Look(TM). Already looking forward to next week! :D

6. Established relationship fics are not my cup of tea so I always read fics that have their first kiss and falling in love. But I'd say my favourite tropes would be Soulmate AU and Coffee Shop AU.

7. When I started watching the show last spring (from season 1) I already knew who Cas was and that Destiel was a thing from Destiel moment compilations on YouTube and pins on Pinterest. In the end they were the main reason why I continued watching it further and still am here.

8. 5x03. You can't just say you believe two people are gay when it's based on subtext and then just totally platonically ask if your bff has plans for his last day on earth when we all know that's your most famous pick up line, Dean.

9. I don't remember which episode it was but in season 9 when Cas was human and bunker was technically his only home, only shelter, but Dean just straight up said he had to leave.

10. I'd like to think Sam does know, but if he doesn't he 100% ships them. At least a little bit.

11. I have hope they will and I also think there is a possibility it will.

12. I think Dean will save Cas from the Empty, but it's going to be close to the end of the episode and it will be implied that Dean likes Cas back and they get together.

13. Dean goes to the Empty to save Cas, but he can only do that if Cas becomes a human so he takes out his grace, brings him back to Earth, Cas wakes up, Dean confesses his love back, they kiss and after a few seconds they pull away so only their foreheads are touching and they both smile.

I've shipped Destiel for 8 months now and I sometimes think about the fact that this ship has been around since I was in kindergarten so to think there are people who have shipped this for 12 years...
