anyway samuel and mary's relationship is just so incest coded even before azazel possesses him and kisses her. a lot of the ways hunters are portrayed kind of mirrors incest, but these two specifically. it's her little secret with daddy that they can never talk about with anyone. she can't date a civilian, they could never understand. she also can't date other hunters, because samuel doesn't trust other hunters. it only leaves so many people. when i rewatch the scene of mary running out to meet john, falling into his arms, saying, "you promised you'd take me away," i wonder what he thinks is going on inside that house.

Okay, so dynamics. And much like Sam, Mary can be an unreliable brat, ok?

Despite Mary's "I'Ll rUn AwAy if I hAvE to!!!!!"

Mary is telling us they disapprove, but what do we actually SEE out of them? John is NOT some secret boyfriend.

"OH NOOOO MY PARENTS HATE MY BF CAUSE HE'S NOT A HUNTER!!!111"

-> Girl, your dad doesn't even want hunters in the house:

Spec: Maybe Mary's the one who's afraid of John not being a hunter. And she won't admit it. Maybe deep down, she thinks it'd be better if he could protect himself, but also, she's TERRIFIED of him being in danger so, actually... nope.

Mary's brain is noping out.

She's rather die than have John face the danger. It's better for him to be her damsel... her princess in a tower, even.

See, I think that Samuel is... *drumroll* worried about John. Especially after what Dean says:

This triggers Mary's FEAR in a big way. First, she looks to her mom, DEANNA.

it reads like, "Mom... mom... Is it true? Could john be in danger???MOM."

And Deanna? Deanna plays if off lightheartedly, showing us that she's a bit of the family jokester and less the family worrier. She makes lights of the whole situation and actually pokes fun at John's nonexistent skills:

Samuel cuts his eyes down because he thinks it's possible; this is something that eats at him. It doesn't bother Samuel that John's not a hunter. It bothers Samuel that John is NAIVE, not hip to the truth.

And Mary openly misreads Samuel's silent worry … as judgment. (But I think subtextual undercurrents are that Mary is afraid of John being in danger. Deanna’s prodding has hinted at the truth: John is defenseless.)

And Mary is taking her stress out on Samuel about it. She picks a fight:

While Mary pretends Samuel is going ballistic and has a tendency to "go ballistic," the truth is that... he's silently sitting there. DEANNA is the one making light of John's nonexistent hunting skills. Samuel's “sour lemon look”... is most likely worry.

Samuel is giving the big vibe of "I'm uncomfortable with John being NAIVE" to this whole situation actually. He actually uses the word naive.

NAIVE civilian.

It's the fact that John might've been in danger because of their family business that causes him major discomfort. He thinks it's very possible that they're going to put John in danger. He likes John.

But Mary…

Mary does the typical rebellious child-thing, gets mad, and puts words in Samuel's mouth... and she is manufacturing a lot of this from her OWN fears.

Like Sam, like Claire, Mary's putting her OWN fears into Samuel C's mouth because she doesn't want to face them. She'd rather have someone to blame for her fears and insecurities.

It makes me think of:

Mary isn't running from her parents. She's running from her own relationship to hunting.

She doesn't want to face that there are things that she loves about hunting and helping people. She loves the hunting life, but it scares her, and she hates the loss it brings.

I think SPNwin was right to posit that it's very likely the Campbells, coming from a big hunting family, have already had significant losses of friends and loves ones.

In the scene where they're cleaning guns, Mary is pretty radiant. Samuel is being silent, not sharing details so as not to pressure her, but when she asks about Dean, he doesn't lie.

(where was dean going... do you think we can help him, dad???)

She wants to be safe, but she wants to protect people. Half the time, that overrides her own fears.

(We see evidence of this too in other episodes, like Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox.)

It's true that she wants better for her future family, for her kids. But she's running from her background because now that she loves someone, the idea of him being in danger is UNACCEPTABLE to her.

Her fear is driving her into runaway mode, and she's placing a lot of blame on her parents.

We see that her parents have raised her in the life, and that they DO ask her to help on hunts sometimes. But they have a stable home, and they eat dinner and laugh together. Samuel has a prickly personality, but it's clear than they love him for it. Deanna and Samuel know about John. We don't see Deanna or Samuel directly pressuring her in the authoritarian style that's in her mind.

In fact, Mary's the one speaking over Samuel at dinner, giving Dean details about Samuel's hunt when he doesn't want to give them:

Later, it's Mary who's pushing them into a hunt, even after that nice little speech she gave to Dean about "running away if she has to." But she charges in:

Overall, Mary seems like a fairly independently and confidently raised young woman.

We don't see Samuel and Deanna cartoonishly pressuring her to do a job or coming down hard about John being her boyfriend. It seems like those are Mary's hang-ups, and she's shunting these fears onto them.
