queer short film: "marco"
queer short cuts is a biweekly newsletter where i share queer & trans short film recommendations. i'm featuring some of my favorite films on tumblr because why not
this film was screened at the 2021 queer cinema for palestine film festival, where filmmakers pledged to boycott the israeli-government sponsored lgbt festival TLVfest. the next queer cinema for palestine, which is a global festival with screenings in many cities and some online, is from november 29-december 10, 2023, and you can sign up for updates here.

united kingdom | 22 minutes | 2019 | narrative short film audio in arabic and english; english subtitles embedded for dialogue in arabic but no closed captions for dialogue in english
marco, written and directed by saleem haddad, opens with omar (zed josef), a lebanese-british banker living in london, refusing a phone call from his mother back home in beirut. he instead focuses on getting ready for a guest: a sex worker (marwan kaabour) who introduces himself as marco, recently arrived in the united kingdom from barcelona. over the course of the evening, omar and “marco” find they have more in common than they initially realized – but that is also not enough for them to make their meeting easy and without conflict. - deepa's full review, including content notes at the end
watch on youtube, and you can find more about creator saleem haddad at his website and his patreon

Lead actor Andrew Scott shone in his role as Moriarty in the BBC cult series “Sherlock” and other appearances in “James Bond 007: Specter” and “Fleabag”. Paul Mescal, star of the British series "Normal People", attracted worldwide attention with his moving performance in the independent hit "Aftersun". Director Andrew Haigh will also have fond memories for Berliners: his masterpiece “45 Years” won the Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 2015, which the leading actors Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay received.

The future of HIFF – Love & Anarchy, one of Finland’s most significant film festivals, is under threat. HIFF is now calling on its audience to help. There are three types of tickets available for the support screenings, and you can support with either 25 €, 40 € or 100 €. The tickets will go on sale on 29.11.2023 at 11.00.
One of the most popular guests in the history of HIFF has been the Irish actor Andrew Scott, who visited Helsinki in 2014. It is only appropriate that we are the first in Finland to screen a film that will be one of the highlights of his career.
All of Us Strangers, directed and written by Andrew Haigh, is one of the highlights of the autumn. The film, which received top reviews at Telluride and the New York Film Festival, is a drama about loneliness, grief and a longing for love that gets under your skin.

If you really care about the LGBTQIA+ community, you should be focusing your efforts on working with Arab reformers to make life more tolerable for minorities, gays, and women across the rest of the Middle East. You shouldn’t worry too much about the one nation in the region espousing liberal values; the one nation where you can be openly gay in the military; the one nation where gays like Nitzan Horowitz of Meretz lead political parties; the one nation where the No. 1 and most beloved TV host, Assi Azar, is gay; the one nation whose minister of justice himself, Amir Ohana of Likud, is a proud gay father of two; the one nation where the Supreme Court recently enforced paid health benefits to gay couples using surrogacy. This is not pink washing, this is reality. Israel granted its gay citizens full rights long before most of the world’s liberal democracies, the United States included, ever did. To call on allies of the LGBTQIA+ community to single it out is a farce.
So, to my friends in Hollywood, I’ve this to say: If you want to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian LGBTQIA+ community, you should start by demanding that Palestinians—and the rest of the Arab world, for that matter—respect basic LGBTQIA+ rights first. I dare any of the esteemed filmmakers who signed the latest petition to grab their same-sex partner and try making out in public in any other country in the Middle East and see how that goes down.
I suspect that they won’t do that, and I would strongly advise against it. So, instead, I invite them to come to Pride Week in Tel Aviv in June, along with hundred of thousands of tourists from around the world and happily make out on a beach in Tel Aviv. No one will blink an eye, and you will get a lovely tan while you’re at it.

“ ... Canadian Marc-Antoine Lemire pulled his short movie Pre-Drink, which won the Toronto International Film Festival Award for Best Canadian Short Film.
“We have recently become aware of Israel’s pinkwashing strategy, and wish to express our refusal to contribute to it, in addition to our support for the LGBTQ+ community,” Lemire wrote. “Following a protest movement of several filmmakers and artists in disagreement with Israel’s policies towards Palestine, we have decided to take a stand in favor of this movement. Especially with the recent events, we refuse the instrumentalization of our movie.” ...  TLVFest is a cornerstone of Israel’s pinkwashing campaign. Pinkwashing is the public relations strategy that deploys Israel’s supposed enlightenment toward LGBTQ issues to deflect criticism from its human rights abusesand appeal particularly to Western liberal audiences.
It often involves gross exaggerations of Israel’s progressive policies, accompanied by outright lies about Palestinians.
Pro-Israel governments that have pointedly failed to condemn or act to stop Israel’s deliberate killings of unarmed Palestinians in Gaza, including children, medics and journalists, have become particularly enthusiastic pinkwashers. ...”

http://selfishprotein.net/cherryj/2014/TokyoIsraelPalestine.html#TILGFF_answers

(Pinkwatching Israel
Pinkwatching Israel

Excerpt:
Palestinian queers and their allies in the BDS movement call for a boycott of the Tel Aviv International LGBT Film Festival (TLVFest) taking place between June 1-10 2017. We call on international filmmakers to withdraw their movies from the festival and respect the Palestinian call for a cultural boycott of Israel until Palestinians have their human rights respected. Like with apartheid South Africa, Palestinians are calling for people of conscience around the world to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law, including a call for artists not to perform or show their work in Israel. The Palestinian cultural boycott call has been heeded by a growing number of cultural figures from around the world including filmmakers John Greyson, Mira Nair, Ken Loach,The Yes Men and Mike Leigh. It sends Israel the message that there is no business as usual for as long as Israel continues to oppress and deny rights to Palestinians.
The Tel Aviv International LGBT Film Festival is sponsored by entities in Israel that are deeply complicit in violations of international law. The Israeli Minister of Culture, one of the sponsors of the festival, is a leading body in the Brand Israel project launched in 2005 to promote a positive image of Israel abroad to distract attention from the daily reality of occupation and violence against Palestinians. The Film Festival promotes the cynical use of gay rights – known as Pinkwashing –  to distract from and normalize Israeli occupation, settler colonialism and apartheid. The cultural boycott is therefore not about censoring artistic creations, but rather about asking international artists, such as filmmakers, not to participate in Israeli cultural events sponsored by the Israeli state, such as TLVFest, until Israel respects the human rights of Palestinians.

i’ve actually been wanting to recommend uporni duh | rebellious essence for a while, but i hadn’t found a theme to include it with until now. this animated short, which was written, directed, and animated by ana čigon, follows a beautifully multi-colored cat who goes to the office of ministry for cat affairs to apply for a passport. all goes well until the pink and blue cat clerks ask for the applicant’s sex. - deepa's full review, including content notes at the end
watch on youtube, and check out creator ana čigon’s website

From the site:
Queer Cinema for Palestine (QCP) will open its virtual and physical doors this November for a collectively-curated 10-day film festival celebrating global queer realities and standing in solidarity with Palestinians.
QCP will run from 11-20 November and host more than a dozen events across five continents, both online and in person. QCP is a first-time global queer solidarity initiative that offers a vibrant space using art and culture to oppose the ongoing violence of Israeli apartheid.
QCP will feature films and documentaries including Palestinian and South West African and North African regional films and artists, masterclasses with filmmakers, panel discussions, drag performances, queer indigenous solidarity, and more.
QCP coincides with TLVFest, the Israeli government-sponsored LGBT film festival. Palestinian queers have called for a boycott of TLVFest over its role in pinkwashing Israel’s regime of military occupation and apartheid oppressing all Palestinians.
QCP will feature some of the more than 50 filmmakers who have pulled their films from TLVFest in response to the call from Palestinian queers and the nearly 200 who have pledged not to screen at TLVFest. A special program of Brazilian short films will honor the eight Brazilian filmmakers who withdrew from TLVFest in 2020.
QCP recognizes that fighting apartheid via principled acts of refusal and withdrawal is just part of the equation. QCP offers a space for artists to do what they do best: creating art for audiences and using art for social change.
QCP will also feature a program of Jewish queer cinema in solidarity with Palestinians and a panel discussion on challenging repression of solidarity with Palestinians.
An “Apartheid then and now” program will feature South African, Palestinian and international films and speakers on using cinema and new media to oppose apartheid and boycott as an activist tactic.
Ghadir al Shafie, co-founder of Aswat – Palestinian Feminist Center for Gender and Sexual Freedoms, commented:
“As Palestinian queers we invite you to join us for Queer Cinema for Palestine, a feminist, anti-racist, anti-colonial festival that shouts YES to queer cinema and NO to Israeli Apartheid.”
QCP will host events in cities around the world, including Seoul, Bilbao, Tunis, Beirut, Belfast, Prishtina, Paris, Montreal, Turin, Sofia, and London, Ontario.
The online program will be hosted on the Toronto Queer Film Festival’s state-of-the-art platform designed with accessibility in mind. Films will be available on demand for the duration of the festival.
QCP encourages local queer, Palestine solidarity and anti-racist groups around the world to organize watch parties during the festival.
QCP came together in May 2021, as the world protested and unprecedented numbers of artists, sports celebrities and academics called for accountability following Israel’s bombardment of Palestinians in Gaza, forced expulsions in Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan in occupied Palestinian East Jerusalem, and violent repression and arrests of Palestinians demonstrating for their rights.
QCP is organized by a global coalition that includes Aswat – Palestinian Feminist Center for Gender and Sexual Freedoms; Kooz Queer Film Festival in Palestine; Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI); Palestine Festival of Literature; Toronto Queer Film Festival; Seoul Human Rights Film Festival; Rainbow Action Against Sexual-Minority Discrimination, the largest queer coalition in Korea; Mawjoudin in Tunisia; Outburst Queer Arts Festival in Belfast; Dylberizm in Prishtina; Festival Ciné-Palestine in Paris; Sursock Museum in Beirut; Toronto Palestine Film Festival; Cinema Politica in Montreal; Sare Lesbianista in Bilbao; Maurice GLBTQ in Turin; Violetki in Sofia; Embassy Cultural House in London, Ontario; and Independent Jewish Voices Canada.

A group of more than 130 names from the film world, including at least 100 LGBTQIA+ filmmakers and film artists, have signed a pledge to boycott TLVFest, Tel Aviv's government-sponsored LGBT film festival, in what they say is solidarity with Palestinian members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
The pledge was organized by Palestinian queer organizations and PACBI, the academic and cultural arm of the Boycott Divestment Sanctions movement, a pro-Palestinian activist group that seeks to cut, among other things, global cultural ties with Israel in protest of the country's treatment of Palestinians in Israel and the occupied territories.
We’re sure these filmmakers would be very welcome and treated royally by the Palestinians. After all, Palestinians are very open-minded when it comes to LGBTQIA+ rights.
