Back on my rarepair bullshit (not that I ever got off)

So I had this class about a specific niche of Hollywood history this year and my main take-away from it is that Bolin’s arc in TLoK s2 is 100% inspired by Fred Astaire.

A sibling duo who rose to fame together but the older one leaves the industry so the younger one has to adjust and find his own path? Check.

Starts a career as an actor in black and white films that already have audio? Check.

Gets paired with an actress called Ginger and together they rise to new heights of fame/success? Check.

Anyway, I guess this is my contribution to the fandom. Do with it what you will.

I am still on tlok phase to no one's surprise, I've noticed something about Bolin after rewatching and actually paying attention to the scenes...he just gets objectified a lot, maybe it is just me but back and forth he is always seem as a "the lovable idiot" by others.

To get to my point I am gonna go back to his backstory, his parents died and Bolin became homeless alongside his brother, normally children in these sort of situation are easily exploited by adults which is what happened.

Bolin seemed more naive than Mako, he is younger and Mako probably sheltered him, basically becoming the "parent" in the situation, incredible traumatic and it lead him to developing a rough exterior towards others because he knew that people like him and Bolin would be taken advantage by others.

This leads me to how Bolin views himself, he fights for a living and it might have lead him to develop a complex, Bolin is the "naive one" to contrast Mako being the "tough one", he holds the responsibility his father or mother should have but neither of them have that luxury.

Him becoming an "actor" made me think that all those years of being a fire ferret really did something to his self esteem, dressing up as a stereotype of a water tribe attire that shows off his body, like that isn't bad per say, Bolin knows he has a good body because that's a "tool" for him to work.

Years later that scene finally makes sense. All his story arcs didn't truly make sense to me at first because it felt like Bolin was being tossed around, now it made sense because he would allow himself to be tossed around by others if that meant he received the validation and love that he lacked as a child that got his childhood taken away from him.

Deep down Bolin just wants validation for others, he just wants to be liked for something and maybe deep down he knows he is being exploited by others but that's literally how he grew up, by being exploited. He sees this as a normal thing, so to Bolin being wanted or liked means being exploited.

Do you see a pattern in those relationships Bolin had with women? He always tried to impress them, seeking for their validation, everyone likes validation but on Bolin case there are patterns to it, he doesn't notice how Korra isn't interested nor how Eska was being controlling towards him(I do say that Opal may be the exception to the bad pattern thing but my point stands).

Conclusion:

I wanna study him under a microscope byee<33

Edit: Let's not forget that there was a INCREDIBLE unnecessary scene of Bolin kissing Ginger against her consent and it was played for jokes. It was extremely out of pocket and I felt very out of character (to me at least), it sucks.

I'm gonna say something possibly controversial, so get ready to cancel me (I'm jk, please don't)

I've seen a lot of TLOK fans talk about how much of a sweetheart Bolin is and that he's the best character, etc etc. people paint him as this goofy innocent himbo, who has done nothing wrong.

but have we collectively decided to forget about this?

have we forgotten about Bolin kissing (a.k.a sexually harrassing) his coworker after she rejected him multiple times? and how it was played off as a joke?

i'm sorry, i liked Bolin at first too, he was 100% a good guy in the first season especially, but this scene just gave me the ick. it was not part of the script, Bolin just couldn't take no for an answer and took the opportunity to kiss a woman who was tied down and therefore unable to fight back.

Ginger very clearly told him that she was just playing her role as a heroine and was not actually into him, yet Bolin kept persisting and harrassing her.

and sure, she "falls in love" with him in the end after he does all that heroic stuff, but that's just the kind of plot you expected from something that passes off harrassment as a joke.

i guess you could chalk it up to S2 being a dumpster fire as a whole, but if we're still hating on Mako for cheating on his girlfriends (which he totally deserves, don't get me wrong) or on Korra for.. just being herself, then we should admit that Bolin also did a really fucked up thing that is possibly even worse than what Mako did. at least Mako got called out in the show for the shit he did. no one even mentions that scene with Bolin, it's just glossed over.

i've seen very few people talk about this, i was beginning to wonder if it was just a fever dream that i had. but nope, it's real and i've been wanting to talk about it for a while now.

We know close to nothing about Yasuko, but if Asami takes after her mom, then I think Lin would find Yasuko's wits, elegance, and charming personality appealing, and Lin, well, what else do we need to say? 😆

Nah, I don't see it. I think Lin would believe Buttercup would be interested in her for selfish, opportunistic reasons (being the partner/spouse of the Chief of Police who happens to be a Beifong would certainly elevate her status in society) rather than Lin the person.

Aside from the logistical hurdles for them to meet, I'm not sure how this would work. One is an actress, and the other is a dancer when she's not leading Zaofu's guards or uniting the Earth Kingdom, so maybe having the performing arts in common could bring them together? 🤔
