The idea of Eska and Desna switching places made me imagine a scenario:
A healing teacher is praising “Eska” for her diligence because she was extra focused at class, listening carefully to the lesson, ever since she entered the room.
But here’s the catch: “Eska” is actually Desna using eyeliner and hair accessories! And he was only listening carefully because, if he said a word, the teacher would realize she was teaching Desna all along!
Ok, fandom, I’ma let you finish (because honestly God knows I cannot control you guys anyway) but we need to all take a moment and talk about something huge.
Eska.
Desna needed a healer. Unalaq did not give have a ratpoop and that’s a discussion for another day. But Eska realized her brother needed a healer and immediately set out to find help for him.
Which means she is NOT a healer. She cannot heal. She can use her waterbending to fight, but she cannot heal.
That’s huge. For one thing as traditional as Unalaq pretends to be, he let his daughter learn how to fight and did not force her into the old-fashioned feminine gender roll his people traditionally follow. It might be a simple case of not caring what his kids get up to (not at all unlikely, dude’s a shit parent) or maybe she and Desna used to switch places for lessons or something.
But I think it speaks volumes that Eska cannot heal. And also that she was more concerned with her brother’s safety than not failing her father. Eska had some massive, if subtle, development this episode and I loved every second of it.

Is there a funnier scene in all of Legend of Korra than when Zuko, Eska, Desna and Tonraq were in an elevator in the North Pole trying to prevent P'Li's escape and Zuko was explaining to them that she could create explosions with her mind. And that he'd once hired a guy who had the same ability to kill the Avatar and awkwardly adding that it didn't work and then Eska reassuring him saying she'd tried to kill Korra once too and that these things just happen and we had two people bonding about trying to kill the Avatar while Tonraq —the Avatar's dad— was standing right next to them and being like. Can we just focus on the damn mission.
Gotta love Zuko though. He was like 88 years old and he was still as socially awkward as he was when he was 16.

Y/n: And- Woah, who is this babe you’re with Eska?
Eska: That’s Desna, and he’s not a girl-
Y/n, leans against wall: So Desna, what do’ya like to do?
Desna: I like to read.
Y/n: Uhh.. ok. Why?
Desna: Because reading teaches me interesting things.
Y/n: Like what?
Desna: I’m glad you asked, I have many examples. Like for instance, did you know that if you electrocute someone underwater it leaves no burns marks on the body?
Y/n: Cool.. so you like uhh.. wanna take a bath? Together?
Desna: …
Desna: Can I bring an industrialised toaster?

Redeemed Azula (the vision Aaron Ehasz had of it) had the potential to be the funniest character in the whole franchise lmao.
Imagine her as an old lady in LOK and everyone meeting her. Her scary musical motif plays when people realize who she is and then she's just chilling like 'yeah, it's me. Want some tea?' and ends up chatting with Bolin for a while. She goes with Zuko, Eska, Desna and Tonraq to stop the Red Lotus and the elevator scene between Dad of the Avatar + People who tried to kill the Avatar somehow becomes even more awkward with her in it. They all hear about the death of the Earth Queen and wonder how they got inside Ba Sing Se and the palace so easily and Azula just goes 'I did it when I was 14, it's not hard', and then immediately say 'sorry, not the time'. She hears about what the Red Lotus plans to do —killing Korra in the Avatar State—, and she starts saying that that is bad strategy if you do it upfront and should be more of a quick sneak attack like when she did it because otherwise the Avatar would fight back, and then immediately shuts up when everyone is staring at her and says 'sorry, this is bad.'
Like, potentially the funniest character in the franchise.

LOVE the pattern of the Power Hungry Father with Two Children dynamic throughout atla and lok. Ozai/Azula/Zuko, Yakone/Noatak/Tarrlok, Unalaq/Eska/Desna. idk if it’s on purpose but it is so interesting every time

Why does no one talk about how big of menaces the members of the water tribe are?. Like I always see "oh the fire nation is the most chaotic/ dangerous because of there anger" or that " the earth kingdom is the most dangerous because there always fighting".
But like the water tribes are just built different, like you would expect the water tribes to be chill and mellow but this just isn't the case at all, and I think it's what makes the so unhinged, and also scary as villains.
Most of korras villains are water benders, korra herself is a water tribe avatar and she's an absolute menace to society, the other water tribe avatar in kuruk was just as bad he was fully fist fighting dark spirits his entire life.
The water tribe made up the majority of the army invading the fire nation and those soldiers put in work. Hakoda got stabbed(I think) and still stayed in the battle.
Don't even get me started on the blood benders, the puppet master episode with hama is usually agreed to be the most frightening avatar episode, with the introduction of the most disturbing bending style and the fact it was forced on katara. Amon had korra hiding from him and yakone made aang go into the avatar state just to break out of his grasp. It is ridiculously over powered and was the first time we saw the dark parts of water bending.
Katara and sokka are in a league of there own I swear, katara robbing pirates, starting prison riot's going again the higher ups in the sister tribe because she didn't agree, taking down zuko and azula at one point, becoming a master and later the greatest water bender of all time, sokka breaking into and out of the most secure prison in the fire nation, destroying the blimps, killing combustion man. And so many other things.
Ming hua is like a giant water spider.
Tonraq throws hands.
Desna and eska are terrifying on the battlefield.
Pakku being a member of the white lotus and helping free the earth kingdom.
The other nations and kingdoms call them savage's but I just think the water tribes are just built different.
