The knight nods solemnly, ever so good at staying composed in front of others, when Joel can see the blood rushing to his cheeks. "Of course," he replies, "as soon as we hit land."

OR : Etho's leaving for Pixandria, Joel's seemingly alone in Mezalea and life likes to challenge aers faith and will to live on. That's to say ae is as confused as ae is scared, but there's nothing much to do but wait.

Not immune to Boat Boys

So Joel plops down on Etho’s raft (which instantly stops moving) and loudly proclaims he’s immune to all curses and therefore they will not affect him.

He says this, being functionally immortal and covered in barnacles and coral as a side effect from Scar’s curse and is sitting on an immobile raft because of Etho’s curse.

Etho naturally agrees and decides to see just how long this will last because he likes Joel and they just. Hang out.

Joel mentions Bdubs and Etho gets a funny look on his face but doesn’t talk about it.

Eventually Joel has to swim back to the Scourge and the instant he leaves the raft it starts moving on the waves again.

after making that post and going to bed i've realized that it's so hard for me to describe all the thoughts that go into it so

tl;dr: i have consumed an ungodly amount of ethoslab content to the point that writing him is kind of second nature

you could also probably go thru my archive for etho text posts i've rb'd, cuz those have also influenced me a lot and i'll link a few at the end. i also sincerely recommend watching and rewatching his hc7 because that is like, everything i love about etho in 40-smth episodes.

long and kind of complicated/messy answer under the cut. i tried to go as in-depth as i could w/o being overly rambly

when you think of etho, what do you think of? you probably think "mysterious cryptid redstone guy who is scary." that is the devil talking. he is not mysterious, a cryptid, or scary at all. he is just a guy who's reputation is bigger than him.

here's some (very basic) traits i'd assign to etho before any of those:

humble

reflective*

confident

competitive

friendly

mischievous

avoidant

*reflective in the sense that he mirrors other people's energy.

originally i had a whole rant typed up explaining these personality traits, but i realize you are probably a fellow ethogirl and a lot of these need no explanation. if you want an explanation/to better understand why i chose those personality traits, i am going to once again recommend his hc7, as well as checking out anything he's done with team canada (pick a series and just start watching. if you dont know where to start, one of my beloved mutuals has a neat little guide for ppl new to etho's content that includes some staple team canada content.)

some things i apply to my etho that make sense to me that might go overlooked by the casual enjoyer:

he is so incredibly neurodivergent coded. i am not going to make any assumptions on etho's brain structure, i dont think its my place, but seriously. give your etho some silly thing to be super passionate about on the side. make him easily distracted/get off topic easily. make his storage system start out well but quickly descent into chaos as he gets too lazy to use it.

he goes with the flow! this goes along with me describing him as a reflective person. he "yes, and"'s stuff like there's no tomorrow. he takes whatever energy is thrown his way, and he chucks it right back at you. he gets dragged into shenanigans and goes "oh this might as well happen! let's see how far we can take it."

he likes to avoid problems he doesn't see as immediately his own/aren't immediately affecting him. his response to moon big was literally "i'll let the other hermits deal with it. look this low gravity makes not having elytra so much easier! lets go build a bee farm." if it doesn't affect him right this instant, or there's nothing he can do about it, he will worry about it later (and probably forget to worry about it.)

he prioritizes the "fun" factor above all else. if you know what the bamboozler is, you understand this. also, the bee farm i just mentioned. if there is a very efficient/straight-forward way to do something or a very fun way to do something, he will go with the fun way most of the time. if the only option is boring, he'll find a way to make it fun.

his reputation precedes him, but his reputation is a little inaccurate to modern times. someone who doesn't know him very well might think he's menacing or scary, but the reality is that he's just a silly little guy. don't get me wrong, there is a reason he's seen as menacing, and if he wants to be he can be, but most of the time he's just here to chill.

his humor is very roundabout. he tells a very long story to get to the punchline, or he tells something that plays into stereotypes so much it's ridiculous. here are some examples. he is also a professional "your mom" joker, like i literally cannot link enough examples his staple joke is "your mom."

most importantly, i think, is that etho doesn't take himself too seriously. i think a lot about the quote from cleo that goes like, "etho doesnt say he's a grownup, he giggles and runs away." so dont make etho too serious!

HE IS LITERALLY JUST SOME GUY. i cant stress this point enough. he should have "just some guy" energy. tiny voice he's doing the best he can. things happen to him and he is mildly bewildered. something goes wrong and he needs like, one second dedicated to panicking before he does anything about it.

Oh boi! this is the best question I've ever gotten tbh but here we go So the thing I'm into rn, and what I've been posting about for the last few weeks or so is called Last Life. It's a hardcore SMP (survival multiplayer) where every player is assigned randomly from 2 to 6 lives at the beginning. If they die and reach their last life their names become red and their goal is to kill others, all alliances with that person break. They do all of this until just one remains. That's a very in short summary of what really happens. Also it has 9 episodes and depending on who you're watching the episodes are 20-40 minutes long so it's a quick binge. So Last Life is actually the second season of Third Life which has a similar premise but it is a bit more lighthearted, where ppl can make alliances with the Red Names. My advice is to start with Third Life and I think the best person to watch for that is Grian (that's how i started watching it as well). Him and Scar have an amazing dynamic, and their story is very enjoyable. But everyone's povs are very enjoyable so if you have interest in others you can go on their channels and watch their pov (that is one of the things I love the most abt this). Once you're done with Third Life, I recommend watching Last Life from Etho's pov, but Grian's and Smallishbean's povs are rlly good as well. But whoever you end up watching you have to watch episode 7 from Grian's pov because it is the best one by far. I also should warn you that there is a lot of angst so be ready for that lol. Now when I first watched Third Life it was really hard for me to get into it bc I didn't rlly know anything abt most of the players. So I'm gonna make a small list explaining the players so it's easier to understand everything (I'm making this assuming you don't know any of them but also trying not to spoil anything):

Smajor1995 (Scott) -in Third Life he has an alliance with Jimmy, people also call them Flower Husbands. In Last Life he has an alliance with Pearl and Cleo and they're called Gatekeep, Girlboss and Gaslight. He's all around a loyal and fair player, I would say definitely Lawful Good. Outside this series he is known for organizing the biggest Minecraft event called Minecraft Championship. So he is a pretty big name in this community

Skizzleman (Skizz) - In TL he was allied with Ren, in LL with Bdubs, Etho and Tango, forming team BEST. I don't know a lot about him but I would say he is definitely a Neutral Good. He is pretty wholesome, and the glue in the BEST team. GoodTimesWithScar (Scar)- in TL he is teamed with Grian, in LL he is mostly alone but on good terms with everyone. He is an interesting charachter for sure. He is a bit of a scammer and an arsonist but we love to see it. I would say he's Lawful Evil but that's my personal opinion. Grian- in TL he is teamed with Scar and in LL he is part of the Southlands, which is made out of Mumbo, Martyn, Jimmy and Impulse. He is a gremlin. Chaotic Evil. You will love him and hate him at the same time. Smallishbeans (Joel)- in both TL and LL he isn't really part of any teams. Lone wolf. He is very lovable despite being chaotic as all hell. He is a pretty funny dude tho. Neutral Evil for sure. Rendog (Ren) - in TL he is the king of Dogwarts, teamed with Martyn (his closest ally) and Etho, in Last Life he is part of the Shadow Alliance with Lizzy, Cleo and BigB. He is very into Roleplay but it is rlly fun to watch tbh. ''King daddy of the server''- Etho, Third Life. Neutral Good

SolidarityGaming (Jimmy but some ppl call him Timmy which is confusing and no one rlly understands why) - in TL he is teamed with Scott and in LL he is part of the Southlands. He's a pretty silly boy, if we were on twitter ppl would call him ''baby''. He is Neutral Good. EthosLab (Etho) - in TL he is teamed with Ren and Martyn and in LL he is part of BEST team. Ppl are afraid of his PvP skills so they dont start beef with him. He loves his trees but Scar keeps burning them down. He is Chaotic Neutral. TangoTek (Tango) -in TL he is an honorary Crastle Member (formed out of Cleo and Bdubs), and in LL he is part of team BEST. Angry boi, he is also very funny. He is Chaotic Neutral. InTheLittleWoods (Martyn)- in TL he is Ren's right hand man, part of Dogwarts, and in LL he is part of Southlands. He is also into Roleplay, and he has cutscenes and stuff that make his story a bit more complex, so if you're into that definitely check him out. A lot of ppl are into the lore that he does in his series. He has fun interactions with everyone. I would say he is a Lawful Neutral.

ImpulseSV (Impulse) -in TL he changes alliances, and in LL he is part of the Southlands. He seems innocent but looks are deceiving, especially in TL. He is a True Neutral. BdoubleO100 (Bdubs) -in TL he is teamed with Cleo and they're the Crastle Crew, and in LL he is in team BEST. Whoever he teams with he fights for them til death. He's a loyal man and Etho ppl make fun of him for being short. He is Chaotic Good. Bigbst4tz2 (BigB) -in TL he sorta does his own thing and in LL he is part of the Shadow Alliance. I also don't know much abt him but he has some angsty but cool moments with Cleo in LL that are worth watching. He is a True Neutral. ZombieCleo (Cleo) -in TL she is part of the Crastle with Bdubs, in LL she begins in the Shadow Alliance. You don't want to have her as your enemy. Chaotic Neutral. LDShadowLady (Lizzy) -she joined in LL and she was part of the Shadow Alliance. She's married to Joel so if you see them flirting that's why. I would say she's pretty Chaotic Neutral.

Mumbo Jumbo -joined in LL and was part of Southlands. Definitely a great addition to the series and him and Grian have a great dynamic. I would say he is also a Chaotic Neutral but I might be wrong. PearlescentMoon (Pearl) -only joined in LL, allied with Scott and Cleo. Best one at making traps so far tbh. She is a crazy lady but we stan. I would say she's pretty Neutral Evil. That's all of them, hope it helps shape them a bit. I also wanna add that half of the people who play in this series are Hermitcrafters, which is also smth else I've gotten into bc of Last Life. So if you enjoy watching Scar, Grian, Mumbo, Etho, Bdubs, Ren, Pearl, Cleo, Tango and Impulse, you can watch their Hermitcraft series, which is a minecraft server where they build crazy stuff and have fun interactions. And the rest of the players you can also find either on the EmpireSMP or playing in MCC! Tl;dr Third Life and Last Life is a rlly enjoyable series, with fun dynamics, interesting story, heart-wrenching angst, complex characters and most importantly murder! Also another tip is to check out fanart on Tumblr, Twitter and Reddit bc it's really good and the content will suck you in fast. Otherwise if you have any questions feel free to dm me! Your pirate au is giving me art inspiration, so I've gotta ask: what're the characters like in terms of the human to not human scale? I like drawing screwed up and obviously magic/cursed creatures, but I'd like to know where the boundaries lie.

Most of the characters are fairly normal looking! Scar is notably human but the other members of the crew are a little bit Weird.

Grian and Scott have a lot of coral growth on their skin, a la the crew of the Flying Dutchman in POTC2 and they’re uncanny but they’re the most uncanny because they’ve been around the longest. Grian especially looks really strange which is helpful for intimidation considering he’s the more aggressive between him and Scar.

The other members of the crew, aside from Jimmy and Cleo, have progressive coral growth and they look a bit inhuman, again like the characters in Dead Man’s Chest

Jimmy is a fish man, but he has a little bit of magic to hide it. It’s not quite as obvious but he does look distinctly human and unaffected by the curse on the ship, but that’s because he’s actively trying not to look like a merman.

Cleo is obviously very much a zombie with her stitched up skin and body parts able to detach and reattach without any trouble.

Pearl is a slightly different case in terms of uncanniness where she LOOKS human but she doesn’t move like one (scurrying around the ship etc) and you can mess with her design how you see fit.

The Scarlet Buccaneers, Martyn included, are entirely human, but I’ve been playing with the idea of Ren having dog features because that’s just a staple of his design.

Lizzie is very much Ocean Queen vibes with a giant axolotl appearance. She CAN shrink down to normal size with magic but she still looks like a blue axolotl.

Pix is a weird case because he looks mostly normal but his arms and legs are entirely made up of copper. They’re not prosthetics, his arms are just made of copper. He can’t feel them either.

Etho is completely normal looking though.

If you do make art and post it PLEASE tag me I want to see it so badly! I hope this answers your question but I can be more specific if needed! I mostly just leave it up to your imagination because I personally love some magic and cursed people/creatures myself!

Stationary

Joel, contrary to what some members of the crew might tell you, is not an idiot.

But he doesn’t really think about what he says before he says it.

In this case, as Etho’s boots land on the ship’s deck, he feels the wood under him creak and then stop. Stop dead in the water. Like the waves aren’t even buffeting the ship.

So Joel stares at Etho, who is looking around the Scourge with interest, and then grins.

“Well well!” he says. “That’s a cool power you’ve got, my friend!”

Etho turns and blinks at him. “We just met. I’m not your friend.”

Joel dramatically leans forward. “Are you saying you don’t want to be friends with someone as cool as me? You’re missing out.”

The man laughs, before looking around again. “Say, uh, where’s your captain? I’d like to speak with him?”

Joel blows a raspberry. “But why would you want to do that when I’m right here! I am infinitely cooler than Scar and I also want to know how you stopped the boat.”

Etho shrugs. “I don’t know. And as for you, you certainly…know how to make an impression.”

“What’s going on out here? Joel did you drop the anchor again?”

Grian walks up on deck with his eyebrows raised, and his eyes light up with interest when they fall on Etho. “Well! Who’s your friend, Joel? And did they drop the anchor overboard?”

“No, well, maybe.” Joel taps his chin. “I don’t know. I didn’t see him drop it.”

Grian sighs. “Well, I guess that’s a mystery solved. Come on, let’s have you introduce yourself to Scar.”

Without another word, Grian grabs Etho by the arm and pulls him below deck.

In your pirate au is etho human? He looks human but like…he just exists on a raft with a (frankly emberressingly) small sail. I…don’t think humans can survive alone for too long.

anyways pirate etho thoughts have invaded my mind like no other. Have the other ships accidents picked him up thinking he was stranded only for him to quickly disappear in a raft they swore floated away days ago. Does he steal peoples coffee and leave their barrels filled with sand that no one knows where is came from? (Shade-e-e’s live rent free in my brain)

Etho is very much human but very supernatural things happen around him. Ships have picked him up but they just. Don’t move. While he’s onboard. No wind in the sails, no moving with the waves. Like the ship’s anchor is down, even if it isn’t.

But he does absolutely have cryptid status, and he does just steal things from the crews he comes across and leaves them with worthless things in turn, always on his little dinky raft and its tiny sail.

He pretends not to notice the effect he has because he thinks people’s faces when they notice are absolutely hilarious.

He, to his dismay, runs into The Desert Scourge a LOT. Like way too often to be normal. He actually has a paddle that he uses exclusively to get away from them. Scar usually waves at him as they pass but sometimes Joel will hop on his raft (that will suddenly stop moving) and harass him for a while before swimming back to the Scourge.

He does tend to steal food and water from other crews and Jimmy will toss him some if they see him but otherwise he just floats around.

He’s a little bit of a legend too because obviously rumors about a guy hanging out on a tiny raft on the open sea for YEARS is definitely gonna raise some eyebrows, but there are people who don’t believe he exists.

He very much does exist though. And he misses Bdubs Prime. Though I won’t say why.

Hmmmm Bdubs Prime is a little bit weird and he can never actually board The Scarlet Buccaneers for some reason, and Ren refuses to leave the ship so they just shout at each other while Tango and Skizz stand awkwardly and Martyn tries not to laugh.

Bdubs is First Mate in name only. Grian has the actually authority and would take over if Scar was gone, but Bdubs is Scar's number one fan!

Martyn tries to escape the Scourge via Etho's raft but it doesn't work and the raft stops dead the minute he lands on it. Martyn is also weirded out by Bdubs's presence on the Scourge.

Technically none of the undead crew need to sleep. Only Jimmy and Scar really do, but the others do "pretend to sleep". Cleo doesn't care about sleep though but she DOES eventually get tired. They're usually the one that keeps watch because they're perceptive and don't like sleeping (she finds it boring).

For tl pirate AU: two Etho questions!

one: is he, like, okay? emotionally I mean. he misses Bdubs, I know, and normally I'd be worried about him being. at sea. for an unspecified amount of time. alone. but he's, like...Etho. so ??????, and also, it seemed like the phrasing of his curse isn't that he has to be at sea, so I have to assume he wants to be here????

two: what is he eating how is he even alive on there—

Etho is specifically cursed to wander the ocean. Idk how I’ve phrased it before but I know I’ve never really talked about his curse in detail so I will do that now.

Etho’s curse is to wander the ocean alone until the day someone decides to break his curse. Etho was allowed to make the raft before the curse took effect and that’s simply where he stays.

He physically cannot travel with other people and his position is a lonely one to be sure. Joel can only stick around as long as the Scourge does and the Bdubs on that ship doesn’t know him.

The Bdubs he left behind misses him, but is cursed to wander the land alone in a similar regard to Etho. But I won’t dwell on him here.

So uh. He’s pretty lonely but he tries not to think about it yk. And Joel makes him appreciate the silence more.

To answer your second question, he fishes.
