okay that's it, i've had enough, i'm singlehandedly forcing the kane chronicles fandom to life. i'm tired of "why is it so underrated" and no actual content. fuck you.

brooklyn house canonical facts + headcanons

five stories high, on top of an abandoned warehouse, mist covering it to most mortals.

neighbours of the dare mansion

the great room is at the ground level, but its ceiling stretches out way to the top. the floors in between have balconies looking out into the great room. in the festive season, fairy lights get hung around the balconies.

the walls are decorated with a strange assortment of musical instruments from all across time and the globe and ancient egyptian weapons, as well as drawings and crafts by the inhabitants. it started with mostly the ankle biters making art, and amos sticking it on the wall, but when rachel came over to visit one time, the kids saw her drawing something, and soon enough, zia came home with groceries to find a great room full of kids happily drawing and rachel complimenting them and giving them tips.

thanks to the many instruments collected over the years, many brooklyn house inhabitants have picked up playing one or multiple of them in their spare time. it's quite common to hear music and singing coming from the big room.

there's an enormous fireplace (big enough to park a car) with a plasma-screen TV above the mantel. the kids have begged amos enough times to get a netflix subscription, and he finally did. when julian moved in and discovered this, he was appaled, and nearly immediately started working on making a tv collection through torrents and downloads.

it's flanked by two leather sofas, which are lined with throw pillows and plush animals (sean has taken a liking in making them in his spare time. he even makes some of the gods).

the trainees often leave their hoodies, phones, laptops and other belongings around, and it often becomes a mess. carter has had to implement a penalty system for left behind belongings, because otherwise there wouldn't be any room to move in there.

the great room is so huge, one could, theoretically, comfortably ride a bike around. no, none of the trainees, certainly not sean and alyssa have ever tried it, why do you ask? sadie certainly didn't see them and encourage them, and she certainly didn't get caught by zia encouraging them to do some tricks

the entrance to the library is on the first floor, but the library itself is much further down and one must traverse a three-story long flight of stairs to reach it. the walls are filled with cubbyholes holding scrolls, resembling the inside of a beehive.

the walls of the library are decorated with pictures of gods, monsters, and people in all different colors. sadie and sean have tried to replace every picture with a photograph of themselves, postitoned in the same way as the original (in a bet with walt, of course), but eventually got caught by cleo. the ground is decorated to resemble the body of geb (god of the earth), and the ceiling to his wife, nut (goddess of the sky).

at each of the four compass points stands a shabti, who each have the duty of maintaining particular subjects and when asked will fetch any scroll, palette, or other egyptian artifact, and are capable of retrieving translated texts.

cleo, who is in charge of the library, has gotten to know all of them by name, and often chats to them to see if they remember anything from the long years they have been in the library of the brooklyn house. surprisingly, although they are knowledgable about ancient times, they love to discuss contemporary literature. one of them is very partial to 80s harlequinn novels. cleo, a true tumblr girlie, has introduced them to my immortal. reactions were... mixed.

they take turns cooking - once, julian and alyssa tried making a shabti to cook for them, but unfortunately, it ended with the smoke detector going absolutely haywire. they've decided that it might just be easier to cook themselves, for the time being.

the training room, about the size of a basketball court (which is its secondary use), takes up most of the second floor. it has a hardwood floor, statues of the gods lining the walls, and a vaulted ceiling with pictures of ancient egypt (how come they got a vaulted ceiling when there's three other floors above? i have no idea. magic, i suppose.)

on the baseline walls, they stuck falcon-headed statues of ra perpendicular to the floor, ten feet up, and hollowed out their sun-disk crowns to use them for basketball hoops.

the third and fourth floors are a collection of guest rooms, enough to easily house a hundred people, some of which are adjoined. they are outfitted with a kitchen and a bathroom (often stocked with the user's favorite snacks or toiletries as applies). each room also has a closet that is typically stocked with clothes made from linen, cotton, or other non-animal materials.

most of the magicians are in their teens or younger, so the process of making their rooms feel like home is usually pretty quick. still, it's true that many a time, inhabitants will fall asleep on the couch in the great room, or join each other in their rooms to have sleepovers, especially when nightmares get bad (and believe me, they do).

a terrace wraps around the house on the level of the second floor. there's a dining table and chairs, where meals often take place in good weather.

the terrace also has a pool, in which the pet albino crocodile, phillip of macedonia lives. felix has gotten more and more skilled at turning it into ice. him and phillip have a sort of game where felix freezes him, and phillip tries to break out of the ice. it's all in good spirit, and both of them know, but carter had to get used to it; the first few times he saw them doing that, he immediately pulled out his wand. amos chuckled heartily and pat him on the shoulder.

the roof (above the fourth floor) is where the portal is located, as well as a stable for freak the griffin (which carter built)

on the ground floor, there's a sauna as well as a steam room. a handful of inhabitants, especially alyssa, like to use it to calm down after a day's work.

percabeth hang with the kanes rather frequently and can’t help but fall into the parental role toward them. percy already had the idea of his and annabeth’s kids looking and acting like the kane siblings but when he sees annabeth admonishing them for doing something stupid and them going “yes mom” all sarcastically, it really drives the point home.

I've been seeing people wanting a big fight between the riordenverse protags (Percy, Jason, Magnus, and Carter(and maybe Sadie)). Thing is though, if you threw a brick at Jason he would go down immediately. If there's water near Percy and the Kane's are going to be fighting for a while. And Magnus's only power is that he is a glow stick with a handkerchief boat and a disco sword. He's just going to say "Jack fight them!" throw him and then sit off to the side drinking a Caprisun.

I definitely think Zia and Carter would stay together. I see no reason why they wouldn't. Sadie would probably be Zia's personal cheerleader and be incredibly enthusiastic about helping Zia figuring out styling themself. Walt and Jaz probably join in on that effort as well. When Zia explains it probably nobody in the Brooklyn House is surprised.

Honestly I could see with Amos it being something like he's the first to know, since he realized Zia was hosting Ra and went "...huh. That's not normally how it works..." I am also now imagining him being like, the comically supportive awkward guardian figure. He's like that one story of the dad gifting their trans kid a "boy gift" that was like a comically masculine baseball hat with a truck on it.

Zia themself I think would initially start questioning things once they realize the whole "Eyes usually match the gender of the god they host." Especially with the whole like, physical rejection of hosting Nephthys. I imagine Percy hosting Nekhbet would make that extra confusing for a bit because then Zia and Percy are both like "Ah! Well if it's happened twice surely it's just rare and means nothing! :)" so it takes a little longer but Zia eventually figures it out from that (and then Percy hears about it and is like "...fuck. I'm probably genderfluid but I have college. I don't have time for that").

-Everyone in Brooklyn house is a found family. Everyone.

-its a rule to not anger the fire elementalists, someone tried that once, poor Jaz had to fix them up because their hands were burned.

-speaking about Jaz, she's Bi. Argue with the wall and fight me, I'll die on the hill.

-Jadie is a thing. Again, fight me

-they take turns babysitting the anklebitters.

-Julian is the Anklebitters favorite babysitter because they get to paint his nails.

-a while after Cleo got the fake coat (in Brooklyn houses magician manual) Thoth gave her a real one.

-since it's cannon that Alyssa does pottery, I headcanon that she made a bunch of vases

-felix is the cinnamon roll

-speaking about Felix, he names all of his penguins. And I mean ALL of them.

-Walt Sells good luck charms to the kids with tests.

-Zia and Carter go on dates at least once a month

-Carter is the mom figure and has unofficially adopted Felix and a bunch of other kids

-Sadie will sing along to every musical.

-Sadie is not only the coolest kid in the house, but also A Theater kid. Fight me.

-everyone used to be scared of Zia at first, but once they got to know her, they think of her as the second mother figure.

-Zia is a cat person.

-its all just pure chaos.

Idk if this is a niche headcanon or fanon or straight up confirmed but I love the idea that Annabeth’s half-siblings Matthew and Bobby are Egyptian magicians. Like they have the blood of the pharaohs on their mom’s side. Annabeth’s entire family tree is just various members of random pantheons and they’re all unaware of this until she starts digging. She thinks she hit her limit when she learned Magnus is a Norse demigod but NOPE her literal half siblings are fucking magicians. Matthew and Bobby didn’t think to tell her (they didn’t know she was a Greek demigod!) until she was visiting Brooklyn House and they all do the Spider-Man pointing meme at each other

If a god is possessing a person, then I suppose you're technically dating two people as one. Like how Sadie Kane dates both Walt Stone and Anubis. I still see parallels to Marvel comics in how the Kane Chronicles has their whole host thing. I wonder...if you date Thor, I suppose it'd mean you'd have to be willing to date Don Blake as well. Because I still see Don Blake and Thor as different people. I know they aren't written as different people, but I see them as different people. So yeah. I'm accepting this as my own headcanon now. Thor and Don Blake are distinct enough to be separate people, so people dating them have a polyamorous thing going on.

No because I read tkc thinking they were set around the beginning of pjo. It made sense to me while reading. Just small things like Carter and Sadie fighting the Set Monster in Washington DC (Christmas, 2005) because Percy says in SoM Annabeth had gone there between the end of summer in 2005 and the start of summer in 2006.

A few months lately (which I translated to six but is probably less than that) Sadie and Carter travel the path of Ra on that river I can't remember the name on, Percy and Annabeth are travelling the sea of monsters. Sadie and Carter are retrieving Ra to save them from Apophis. Percy and Annabeth are looking for the golden fleece (and Grover) to save Thalia's tree and camp from Luke's (Kronos') forces.

Then, Sadie and Carter have the final battle. Ra vs Apophis. The Greeks also believe they are approaching their final battle because Thalia is about to turn 16. The Titans are at their peak on Mt Tam. Also in my head while reading there was a thing between the parallels of Ra the sun god either about to survive or lose and Apollo being at his weakest as he has lost contact of Artemis and Koios (is that the titan on Mt Tam??) might injure her to the point of no return.

It made sense in my head so I was shocked when I found out tkc was set around hoo time

you know what? zia rashid headcanons because she doesn't get enough appreciation

she's a little too obsessed with making sure she stays perfect and stays the best

on that note, somewhere in the middle of throne of fire she realized that the kane siblings surpassed (or would eventually surpass) her and she was super mad about it for a bit

had trouble making friends at the First Nome when she was a kid. when she joins the brooklyn house at the end of the series, its when she first really starts to make good friends

starts to get chronic, painful migraines after becoming the eye of ra (its also my person headcanon that carter, sadie, and walt have these migraines too since they're also eyes of gods)

her sleep cycle is tied really closely to ra's journey through the house of night so she'll get really bad and vivid nightmares during the most difficult parts and be absolutely knocked out during the peaceful ones

like all sun god types in this universe i have a feeling that she literally wilts and gets noticably more irritable and upset when its winter or the sun is gone for multiple days on end

for herself she's not a big piercings person but she is a big tattoos person

she gets introduced to everyone at the BAG as an exchange student from Cairo and all the regular students go insane about it

she's fluent in english and arabic (specifically egyptian arabic), but she also picked up a fair amount of french from desjardarins

once at the brooklyn house, she becomes really close with jazz and cleo

sadie is like her little sister and they team up to annoy carter all the time

of course zia lays awake at night, thinking about how the gender of a god and their host always matches, and how ra being hosted in her body was the exception to the rule. surely, it couldn't mean anything. she's just... a girl. well, not like she ever felt like a proper girl, but that was normal, considering that her upbringing had been anything but normal. and it's not like most girls feel like they fill in the shoes of whatever the world tells them that a "girl" is, anyway. look at sadie, she listens to nobody and stomps around in her army boots, and people call her a girl, so surely, the definition must be expansive enough to include her, even though she never felt it, right?

headcanons from The Kane Chronicles because I miss them Rick please I need a new book

• Carter is definitely Horus' favorite of all time. Not only is he his host, but Carter is also extremely intelligent and capable in his role as pharaoh, as well as a person with a good heart, and Horus is so proud of him (he will never admite it tho)

• Bast always brings small meals to the Kanes during missions. Different from other heroes who go through various basic difficulties saving the world, Sadie and Carter always have a goddess who loves them very much, bringing them food or finding a nearby hotel to rest.

• Bes will definitely randomly show up at Nomo and make dinner. Nobody questions. He's good at that

• Sadie creates a lot of playlists, she has at least one for everyone she loves. Carter has two, but she keeps one private. Anubis and Walt's keeps changing because she can't decide on their vibe, and Bastet's is updated every day. She used to have a romantic playlist about Anubis, now they listen it like a old joke

• Isis is attached to her children, so whenever possible she is checking on Anubis and Horus as if they were still little children. Without realizing it, she started checking up on Carter and Sadie frequently as well.

• Felix likes to do Jaz's hair. He's terrible at it but she lets him anyway and always shows off his hairstyles

• Cleo is a source of pride for Thoth. He talks about her at pantheon meetings and always expresses excitement over the little discoveries she makes. (Thoth is considered a very attentive god to mortals, I can't imagine him ignoring a follower)

• Anubis and Walt have a very strong bond, and even if the curse didn't link them they would hardly be separated. Walt showed him a lot of the mortal world, Anubis gave him entire lessons on the historical periods that Walt likes. They play videogames e go to dinner out casually. Anubis met Walt's mother once, she's scary.

• Bastet and Anubis are the type of duo that fight over everything non-stop, but they will be together through anything. She is the only one who speaks ill of him, he is the only one who push out all her bottons. It's not romantic or anything, it's just their dynamic at that point. She will totally lay on top of him in their animal forms out of pure disrespect. And yet, they are each other's emergency contact and are always there for each other.

• Osiris is the type of father who sends strange good morning messages with videos of flowers, always has a joke on the tip of his tongue and wears themed coats at family parties. Sadie adores him

• Seth affectionately called Anubis his son ONCE and the entire pantheon was in shock for years. Anubis was not there and he still don't believe it happened. Nephthys cried

• Alyssa adores Sadie, and began to view her with great admiration. She once tried to dye her hair the shade of pink she always wanted, but it didn't turn out very well.. Sadie helped her with that and they have had matching highlights in their hair ever since.

• Julian can AND WILL turn the mansion inside out. He's forbidden from being in charge but somehow always ends up taking charge of things when Carter and Sadie go out. Apparently things are even worse if he's not in charge.

• Anubis is like a gothic older brother and guide for the younger ones. They go to him for advice on everything from the simplest to the most personal. As a guiding and protective god, as well as a comforter of mourners, he always listens and does the impossible to help but then act like it's no big deal and disappear for a week

• keeping in this point, he has a habit of disappearing during conversations. If Anubis gets tired of the conversation, or the person, he simply turns his back and leaves. He has done this many times with Sadie and sometimes she almost hits him with a hairbrush. He has been irritating Shu with this habit for millennia.

There is something so compelling about the intimacy of sharing your mind and body with another entity. It's the same thing that draws me to Venom so much (and I still maintain that my Venom friends need to get into The Kane Chronicles and bring that Symbrock energy to Amos and Set!!)

I think Set just really likes humans, more than the other Egyptian gods think is appropriate. I find it very funny that when Shu scolds Anubis for getting too close to Sadie, Shu's entire reasoning boils down to "mortals are gross."

Which leads me to believe Set's mindset is "Yes, mortals are gross, that's what I love about them! They're weird and messy and illogical. You never know what they'll do next!"

(It seems Anubis is more like his dad than he'd like to admit 😏)

I'd need to read TKC again to be sure, but given how estranged Amos was from Julius, I get the impression that Amos and Set could find common ground in being outcasts & they're both healing those old wounds through familial bonds with Carter and Sadie. In the Brooklyn House Magicians Manual, there is a subplot where Set celebrates his birthday by playing annoying (but harmless) pranks around Brooklyn. He'd rather spend his birthday hanging out with the Kanes than partying in the Duat 🥺 he loves those dumb mortals even if he'll never say it out loud.

I think the relationship between Set and Amos is always going to be a little bit tainted by the circumstances that brought them together. They're a perfect match now, but there's always this lingering knowledge that Set is probably not who Amos would have chosen if he hadn't already been Set's hostage first. It's not something they regularly discuss, but the knowledge is there.

(Which is why in the Niobe Fic, when Lester takes the Path of Set, it means SO MUCH to him even though he'll never admit it. Lester is the first magician in millennia to CHOOSE Set.)

• Clarisse spent a lot of time pining after Silena when she was with Beckendorf
