I am so excited about seeing "Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys" exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum (through July 7)!
Read: "The Secrets of Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz’s Museum-Ready Art Collection" in @vanityfair

▪︎Reposted from @vanityfair Presenting our spring digital cover stars, @Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz (@therealswizzz).
With their envy-inducing holdings, @theDeanCollection, the music-industry power couple have helped lead the way for a generation of collectors of Black art. The rest of the world is finally catching up.
"A lot of people used to make fun of me collecting art," Swizz tells VF. "I won't say no names, but they're the biggest names."
At the link in bio, the duo speaks to VF about their collection's first major museum exhibition, creating a network of Black artists, and dancing the art world's political tango.

"What does it mean that. . . I see an image of an enslaved person and recognizing that if I'm alive in that time, that's where I stand in the composition. I recognize that the composition itself is beautiful. It is laid out masterfully. . . . It is an internal conflict for me as a maker, standing on both sides of that line, the maker side and the black man who recognizes that that would be my space in the composition. That is life. That is real. That's the grittiness of it."
—Titus Kaphar on Shifting the Gaze (2017), on view in One: Titus Kaphar through October 13.

Titus Kaphar | Mixed Media Painting & Sculpture The work of Titus Kaphar uses the addition of physical elements to reconstruct the”misremembered” but accepted versions of history on display in museums. These alterations are meant to reveal the uncomfortable and unpleasant realities of history without removing the artwork that has become so significant to our nation’s history. Kaphar’s artwork recognizes the absence and downplayed roles of African Americans, Latino Americans, and Native Americans in portraits of well known American historical figures and raises the question of how their lack of representation has influenced the understanding of U.S. history. #blackart #urbanobjectivity #painting #tituskaphar

Farmer’s Daughter Revisited 24”x24” Oil on panel SOLD This commissioned painting was inspired by the photography of Dorothea Lange. Lange’s work is notorious for documenting people during The Great Depression along with all of the hardships and uncertainty many of her subjects faced. With help from @riccowrites and @chris_mac73, this idea of revisiting history and making those who were omitted in the past, visible in the present spawned the beginning of a new series. In these paintings, I look to tell similar stories, from the perspective of faces that are familiar to me.
