“Flying High” just finished. 36 x 48 inches, oil on canvas. Full painting with a few details. As with all of my recent work, images are reflective of what’s around in our contemporary culture without a pre-conceived narrative to fulfill. In this case some of the players are - Andra Day, Moses Sumney, Angelic Kidjo, flying dancer from the Broadway revival of West Side Story, older photo recently published of Doris Day doing a handstand. The grey clouds surrounding the 3 main figures, are based on an image of an airstrike of the Jala Tower, Gaza, during a war with Israel, May 2021. The way these images come together has to do with their shapes creating an interesting composition. Interpretations are open to the viewer. In this case, I started with the idea of a central totem, but as I worked on it the painting decided it wanted to go wider. Have to follow what the painting seems to want.
