Let’s talk about Hospital Playlist. (KDRAMA REVIEW)

note: does contain spoilers

When people ask me what is my favorite Korean drama of all time, with no doubt, IT’S HOSPITAL PLAYLIST. This drama has the comic relief, the emotional scenes, realistic characters-just to name a few. No toxic relationships and petty revenge fights. Nothing else will stop me for saying that this is the ultimate feel good drama.

SYNOPSIS: The drama shows insights into the daily lives of doctors and nurses working at Yulje Medical Hospital. It focuses on 5 doctors who have been friends since medical school, who also play together as a band.

This drama encompasses so many elements and characters so bear with me yo this might be real long

Hospital Playlist is produced/written by the Shin-Lee PD and writer pairing, whose previous works were the renowned Reply trilogy and Prison Playbook (which are *chef’s kiss*) I really like that all their dramas really highlight humanism, and puts emphasis on creating a heartwarming and realistic series. There isn’t always a major conflict to be resolved, but instead it showcases how different people-in this case mostly those in the medical field-go on about their daily lives. I also liked their reasoning to produce a medical drama which was that hospitals were where the most dramatic moments occurred, for example during births, deaths or sickness. And since we are still in the Covid-19 pandemic, it ties in greatly to be paying homage to all the medical personnel saving lives. Hence, props to those who were involved in this meaningful masterpiece <3

The drama is not the usual 16 episodes, but has 12 episodes for each season (SEASON 2 IS COMING SOON YAAS) Good thing is I felt that they were still able to weave a dynamic storyline in the first season even with lesser episodes. The writing was just top-notch with the witty humor bits. Additionally, the music is AMAZING. I love the concept of the main characters being a band and playing different songs every episode too.

Okay, now onto the characters. I thought that every character in this drama was well rounded. Starting of with the main five characters, also known as The 99ers, whose distinctive personalities and natural chemistry make all of them extremely likeable. All main characters are professors of different specialties, and I find the male OB-GYN (Seokhyeong) and female neurosurgeon (Songhwa) very refreshing. Also, I like Shin-Lee dramas always have characters that might be realistic yet hardly seen in other dramas or films. For example, Professor Ahn Jeongwon. Despite being a chaebol (inheritor/heir), he isn’t depicted as a spoilt brat or a cold character, instead as a warm Pediatric doctor who uses his wealth to secretly support patients in need. However it makes him stingy to his friends LOL

To be honest, I really thought I was gonna dislike Junwan due to his cold and tsundere nature. I pretty much believed that he was going to be the party pooper type of the bunch, but with the writer being a master of character development, he turned out to be really sincere and hilarious at times. Same for Ikjun, who apart from his enthusiastic and happy go lucky exterior, cares the most about the people around him. Although Seokhyeong seemed detached and introverted, he shows a emotional side to his friends as well as his mother. Songhwa is literally a girlboss though haha she’s smart, capable and gets along with everyone well. And she’s the most sane out of the bunch.

With all the main characters, we have the relationships. Junwan is the first to date seriously with Iksun (the dog or Micky? jkjk) who is Ikjun’s sister. When it first happened I was like not again Jung Kyung Ho (bc he dated his best friend’s sis in prison playbook too LMAO) I think their relationship was realistic and open. It also showed a more sensitive side to Junwan who would do anything for her. I especially liked how he said he didn’t need access to her phone because he trusted her. Yet as all couples do, they have their fair share of ups and downs. Like conflicts on getting married and a long distance relationship as Iksun moves overseas for graduate studies. I don’t really know how to take the ambiguous ending for these two, as Junwan receives the returned box (that has the ring he sent) I really hope nothing bad happens to these two though.

I’m sure we all love Wintergarden couple though, tbh they’re kinda my OTP at the moment 🤣 It was pretty much a ‘will they won’t they’ relationship with a relatively slow build. I think Gyeoul turned out to be one of my favourite characters. Shin Hyun Been did a good job at portraying her as a straightforward but innocent Resident, who is pretty much openly crushing on Jeongwon. The scenes they had together were adorably awkward (and the scene where he gives her chocopies omg) And when Jeongwon battles his inner conflict to become a priest, the final decision where they kiss was beautifully shot, with the actors both showcasing their emotions extremely well.

Then we have Chihong who pursues Songhwa, his professor. Midway through the drama, it is also shown that Ikjun and Songhwa might have had romantic feelings for each other. Songhwa ends up rejecting Chihong’s confession. In my opinion, Chihong was quite a interesting character but I didn’t really like him at the end. (I like the actor though) He did a real jerk move during drinking games, insisting on Ikjun to confess his feelings towards her even though he is already trying not to put Songhwa in an awkward spot. Although his character did end up making a cool exit and when I thought about his incredible story of soldier to doctor, I kinda regret disliking him that much. As for IkSong, In the final episode Ikjun confesses to her one last time, and we are left waiting for Songhwa’s reply. As much as I love this pairing, I don’t think that the ship will sail or maybe not as quickly as we think. I believe Songhwa would meticulously consider the sacrifices to their friendship or other aspects and might not be able to bring herself to it, but I hope it’s otherwise.

Lastly not forgetting Seokhyeong and Minha, another Professor+resident pairing. This one’s a bit ambiguous though, mainly because there hasn’t been much romantic development. To me, the most impactful scene came from Minha who had been irritated by continuous night shifts and was on the verge of a breakdown. She ended up remarkably saving a patient, starting off surgery on her own for the first time. Oh man Minha was such a lovable character, I remember feeling so bad for her but extremely proud of her for her accomplishment. Although Seokhyeong seemed a bit aloof and distant (which was intentional bc he’s an introvert) I think the backstory and all the hardships he faced with his family really made me feel for him. I hate to break it to you, but I’m not so sure if the ship will sail because of the phone call from his ex-wife and Minha’s somewhat rejected confession. But who knows, they might pull off a twist 👀

Apart from all these characters, there are more characters HHAHAH However, I think this is the killing point of ShinLee dramas. Unlike typical dramas which usually focuses on a main character and 2-3 side characters, they like to cast a diverse range of actors (especially those from theatre/musicals and lesser known drama/movie actors) while actually give their characters personality or a reason to be there. I’ve seen many dramas where extras or side characters were kind of irrelevant thus making me feel that they weren’t needed to build the storyline, yet ShinLee dramas hit different y’all. Every role, no matter how small, holds significance to the drama. It really seemed like a collaborative work that shows off every actors skills (and not forgetting staffs) and teamwork.

Anyways because there are way too many characters and too many scenes for me to mention them all, I’ll just talk about some honourable mentions heheh

1. Sunbin and Seokmin confession scene (ahh so cute)

I kinda sensed that they liked each other at the start but I didn’t know Seokmin would ask her out on a date at the end. Even though it’s kinda awkward that they are dating and working with each other though (both are in the same department) but hey the confession was cute and awkward and just warm and fuzzy 🥰

2. MAMA ROSA IS THE QUEENN

I think we all (would) love Mama Rosa because she’s a real one ☝️ (probably the coolest mother ever) She’s feisty, hilarious and kind to others. Plus her friendship with Ju Jong Su was just adorable and super wholesome. The scenes where they were supporting one another through tough times and hanging out with each other when they felt lonely always put a smile on my face. Oh and how Mama Rosa treated Gyeoul was extremely sweet. (as well as Seokhyeong’s mother) Despite her tough exterior, she’s a likeable character for being a strong but caring woman.

3. Just Do Jae Hak

I seriously love this guy so muchhh omg he’s so funny

Do Jae Hak has a funny amd clumsy personality, though it’s clear he’s been through a lot and is strong willed person. From admitting his indecisiveness to counselling Jun Wan on his love issues, there’s literally nothing to hate about him.

4. Uju and his dadd

The father and son chemistry between these two is so good omg. The scenes with these two are so adorable and heartwarming (not to mention hilarious) It’s amazing to see how Ikjun cares so much for Uju despite his hectic workdays while going through infidelity issues with his ex-wife. Uju is matured for his age and shows his love and appreciation for his dad too, making their interaction a great portrayal of a healthy family relationship💞

5. the food stealing the show🥘

Who doesn’t love food and when a show has great food scenes? Some of the best scenes are definitely when the 99s gather to eat. It really showcases each character’s personality with the tiniest details as well as highlight warm delicious meals. Just don’t watch this when you’re hungry at 2am in the morning guys you’ll be drooling all over your screens HAHAHA

Of course there are way more aspects, like Hongdo and Yoonbok, Ikjun and Iksun’s pigeon jokes and raps, or Jeongwon drunk crying in the chicken shop with his brother (who was his coach in Reply 1994 when he played Chilbong LOL)

Most importantly, I think it is the themes and messages that you get from the drama that really create such a lasting impression. Not only does it hit you in the feels with the hardships of hospital patients, or the hardworking doctors+nurses who are working long shifts saving lives, it also tackles topics of friendships through the possibilities of platonic and friends-to-lovers relationships. However I think the biggest lesson for me came from Seokhyeong, who learns to live his life doing what he want, with the people he treasures. Although the drama might seem slow at times (mainly because there isn’t really a main plot line/conflict occurring), but this drama would still bring you on a journey where you would laugh, cry and finish the series, begging for season 2 ✌🏻

What do you rank your personal fav Reggie ships and do they differ between digests and the show?

ooh a very good question 👀to start with your second question, yes they do! not all of them, but there are definitely some things I ship in the comics I'm less keen on in the show or vice versa, it really depends on the dynamics and interactions in question. and then as far as rankings go... they tend to fluctuate a bit tbh depending on what sort of content we've been getting lately and my overall mood, but I'd say this is more or less accurate for most of the time:

riverdale:

usually it's between archie/reggie (/rarchie) and keggie (and sometimes they're just tied)

varchiereggie (veronica/archie/reggie throuple which yes i'm counting in this because it's just, excellent)

munreggie, rangs, keggangs (kevin/reggie/fangs) are roughly about tied

regpea

mcmantle, veggie, moose/reggie + toni/reggie all hover around similar levels (toni/reggie has really grown on me in s4 and s5 especially tho I ship it hard in the comics) and reorder themselves differently depending (again) on recent canon events and/or my mood

beggie and reghead which is a bit complicated for me because there's obviously potential to both (and I ship both a lot in the comics) even if I don't find their dynamics inherently conducive to shipping with reggie as-is in canon, but i've also written both with friends and had it been excellent so for me it's very much dependent on how they'd develop

chuck/reggie

and also ethel/reggie don't even ask me why because 🤷🏽‍♀️but ❤️

+ i'm trying to think if I'm forgetting anything or anyone but that may be it...?? there's other ot3s/throuples I didn't mention but I ship a lot of those

honorable mention tho to spellmantle (sabrina/reggie) because I ship it sooooo much in the comics and, y'know, it'd probably be fun in the show too if they ever actually allowed us our crossover episode 😞also reggie with nick and/or prudence would slap HARD

polly/reggie is okay I guess but it would REALLY depend on how it was written for me

+ bear in mind most of these rankings are very very close together and do often swap places, sometimes even from several numbers away (for instance I was fairly apathetic to rangs before s4 and now...?). like especially everything between #3-5 all tend to switch places semi-regularly. or how I don't ship regitha yet because there's nothing to go off but if/when I did it'd probably land somewhere in #3-6

(also a lot of them I ship for slightly (or very) different reasons, so that's why my mood can sometimes affect what I'm shipping most at a particular moment because I'll be more in the mood for [x] dynamic over [y] or whatever)

honestly though I like most reggie ships to a certain degree (and/or dependent on the development). the only one I don't particularly care for is midge/reggie (well and I guess cheryl/reggie...) but others I haven't listed such as jason/reggie or dilton/reggie etc. I'm more just apathetic to

I dunno if I'm welcome here, I'm a new fan just vibing tbh. But it is weird how a ship that has been existing for decades now, suddenly transformed into a completely different one. Not only because of Yuichi, but rise Leo is so different from his previous iterations and the vibe soo different that is borderline impersonation XD

But what really is a pity is how Usagi became a "concept" of OC's in which nothing of his personality, past or history is taken into account. They don't care about the other half of their ship, they just want someone to ship Leo with. Usagi became just a spare into the mix. And people feel the right to say "No, you can't ship Miyamoto with Leo!" come on! This character is older than me, his first crossover is older than me! They don't know who Usagi is and they feel entitled to decide how the ship should be.

Miyamoto and Leo have a history. Leoichi is the product of a mass hysteria that exists only because Leosagi set the precedent. They've been meeting over and over, and people who never read the comics, never watched de 03 show want to erase that because they only know about him through the Usagi chronicles.

I don't like to police people ships, they can ship whatever they want, but apples and orange are inherently different. There's room for both, and theres no need to try to get the other one out.

(no one asked me, but for my personal taste, Rise Leo could take advantage of a bit of Usagi's maturity. It would bring a good balance and help keep him grounded –since he's the leader now and all that– and Usagi could use the company of someone who is not tied to the codes and restrictions of the world. There's a lot of personal growth going on there)

Leoichi is too "there's only one flavor here". I won't go deeper explaining why I dont like it, cuz then again, people like it and that's great.

But yeah, leosagi deserves better.

Question. Will we get to see more LeoSagi art from you in any time soon?

i have a few wips! but life has been kicking my ass and other projects have my attention atm @_@

and honestly a personal…kinda petty reason i haven’t been posting leosagi lately…not gonna lie, the constant flood of yuichi content getting mixed into the tag, my version of usagi being confused for him, and the insistence that leosagi shippers “stop shipping leo with miyamoto usagi” even though this has been their tag for 2 decades now…it’s been really demotivating. and i’m burnt out from my rise!usagi design because of it too. i’m more interested in drawing leo with the ACTUAL usagi if anything, because i’m honestly tired of this wave of fans trying to change the tag and what ship it was created for.

tl;dr, i’ll draw leosagi, probably not with my usagi design, it’ll just take time and motivation ;;

#I just think ol' Miyamoto is the cooler one #Like #I can totally understand Yuichi's conflict! How can he top Usagi? No one can!#But still... Don't like him very much.

quackity looked at two of the most chaotic and dangerous people on the smp and thought, nothing could go wrong if we put then together right? Plus I love how phil and techno are each others moral compass (techno more to phil ig, kind depends too) so yeah he will probably do something abt it! Techno's instructions being the main reason tho but idk I feel like the stasis chamber makes more sense with the way techno acted with the enderchest and all that but MAAAN the way I NEED a syndicate prison break in rn ESPECIALLY AFTER YOUR LAST POST!! Because it's something that will probably happen eventually considering techno wants to know what's happening in the prison (I really don't think it's all to help dream tbh lol, the prison is really fucked up rn so it's anarchists right to fuck everything up even more maybe?) but yeaaaah bc of that I feel like c!techno was 100% aware of what would happen too lol like I think he wouldn't be so impressed if Quackity was being genuine but man has gone through enough betrayal to start trusting his enemies now lmao the warning of hating being lied to on his bday tho, nice touch JUST. really nice. Chaos team is hunting this man down when they're free lmao and yeah I feel like techno feels like a comic relief character (a bit due cc!techno personality) and ig people are not used to those characters being strong and dangerously smart, I love it,, and the interactions was SO GOOD!! c!techno is so chill with everything and the fact that the trusts in his friends is one of the reasons he wasn't worried :((((( syndicate my beloved :(( I'm so excited. I wonder if the training with ranboo and niki will be something we will see or if it's going to be a behind the scenes thing,, phil said they have been training for that (help the syndicate members when they need maybe) in his last stream and IDK if he was talking about that exactly but :( I'd like to see some filler training arc tbh :(( Plus If wilbur happens to be out there when they start the chaos I'm all in!! As long niki has her time to shine, yes I'd love to see!! And may I add one more (maybe lowkey controversial idk) opinion but I feel like few people were too quickly to judge when c!techno said he doesn't know why dream was there,, like,, man never did shit to him what did you expect ffkfnfkfk they only really had a small conflict in their needs/opinions when c!techno was partnered with c!tommy and even then he was willing to drop it for the favor. c!techno is such a lawful character to like his owns morals and ideals it's so interesting to see!! He will do what he promises and follow his believes no matter what other ppl say and I really enjoy seeing him constantly follow this path tbh!! But again, that could always be just me being a techno apologist but his character is just really cool for me, especially personality wise.

Btw if you're free to rant about ur latest masterpiece, I would love to know the thought behind each one of their masks, if u have any to share !! 🧨

my bet is on the statis chamber being used first as well but i just really want to see a prison break in, cause what's the point of having a prison plot without at least one big break in/out ya know? and man c!quackity's about to have another dentist visit huh 😔 and the line about lying on techno's birthday ties so well as a set up with what's happening. about being the comedic character i saw someone compare c!techno to deadpool and it clicked to me why i'm not at all bothered as some others seem to be when it comes to the joking nature of c!techno, because i'm used to this type of characters from reading comics sgdhks but like with how dark the smp's story can get i feel like a character that doesn't treat everything 100% seriously all the time is very needed and that's why i enjoy c!techno so much. and god i hope we will get some good old fashioned training arc, just to sprinkle in more anime references to the bleach basement. and like with c!techno and c!dream interactions, what did y'all expect?? their interactions thus far have been positive. it's probably the sbi fanon leaking into how some perceive the canon and the metagaming but with how much techno goes about reciprocity, dream saving his life, overall them allying a good amount of times and c!techno not knowing about shit that's happening outside his cozy cabin of course he will act friendly towards c!dream. we will see if that changes if he learns about the shit that dream has done but looking at his reaction to c!tommy's death i wouldn't hold my breath for a serious change in that aspect sgsj and yeah!! c!techno being so lawful to his beliefs is a trait i really enjoy seeing.

and about my latest drawing i was just sketching around and the boom. the thought of the syndicate break in popped into my head so i wanted to draw something with them and since it's supposed to be a secret organization my brain automatically went to the conclusion that the syndicate wearing masks would make the most sense and because i already draw c!techno with a piglin skull for a mask the obvious route was to base the masks on skulls too. so i went with a crow for phil (of course), cat for niki (bc her mc skin has cat ears and i don't draw them as a part of the character design), enderman for ranboo (based on how i tend to draw the mob) and not included in the drawing but techno has a pig mask to match the rest of them!!

Why them?: on a meta level: oh no he’s hot

but alma’s reasoning is that he’s very upfront about what he wants in the beginning and she’s never been pursued in such a way. It’s a bit of a rush and an ego boost for her at first. but mason’s loyalty very quickly becomes the steadiness alma’s been missing for most of her life and she latches on to that. she’s not had someone so dependable around in… well, ever. and her physical attraction becomes emotional VERY quickly.

Bold, shy, or mixed?: shy until they sleep together, then a mix of bold and genuine afterward.

What were their first impressions of each other?:

alma on mason: thought he was super attractive but that was quickly pushed aside by “holy shit, this guy’s an ass.” she thinks he’s an uncooperative jerk that only cares about himself for quite a while, honestly. she asks him along for things she wants to do alone precisely because she thinks he’ll be the most likely to just stay out of her way. she’s surprised by his attitudes and opinions, and her incorrect assumptions about them, during those times.

mason on alma: would never, ever, ever admit that his first thought upon meeting Alma was simply “cute.” he quickly found parts of her to assess individually. those first few days were mostly spent appraising her physical attributes and watching her back when she needed it. mason did find her funny right away, but he wasn’t willing to trust someone new, regardless of that person being their handler’s daughter or not.

What do they find attractive about each other, mentally or physically?:

alma on mason: his eyes, freckles, and every single version of his smile. his decisiveness, differentially, and willingness to stab as a warning.

mason on alma: her hair tbh, there’s just… a lot of it. her hips, her eyelashes. He also likes her adaptability, sense of humor, and the warmth she gives with no expectation of reciprocation.

What do they do to spend time together?: lots of stargazing, lots of watching tv very quietly and making fun of the storylines they don’t understand until they get bored and make out instead, walking around the quieter parts of wayhaven or taking late-night drives.

What is their favorite memory together?: i like to think mason finds the carnival photo of them after the place has been sacked and gives it to alma sometime later. both the taking of the photo and the giving of it are very fond memories for both of them.

What are their love languages?: touch, quality time.

How do they handle being apart from one another?: badly. mason absolutely hates it after a time. if alma’s out of town, he’s in her apartment with the excuse of feeding her cat, but it’s 100% just to sleep in her bed and be around all the things that make her, her. alma does a little better. she’s used to having folks sort of come and go and come again, but she gets almost hyper-insecure?? it’s nothing she’d admit openly, but she’s second-guessing herself in totally unrelated aspects of her life until they’re reunited.

Do they argue? How do they handle arguments and disagreements? How do they make up?: they don’t necessarily argue, but they disagree with the intent to problem solve. alma is pretty flexible and as long as she can understand why someone might feel the way they feel, she’s willing to hear them out or go along with their plan. if an argument does get out of hand, they need space from it for a while. they each have places to retreat for those times, and they wait for the “hey” text to come through to know it’s time to talk about it.

What does their future look like?: alma becomes a vampire two years into their relationship. they move into a quiet, old house on the edge of town until the whole team moves elsewhere. mason has to get used to having a cat because october has several years left in him. they don’t get married, but they’re inseparable.

Anything else you’d like to share: in the time before alma turns, mason learns to perfect making grilled cheese because it’s what alma craves when she’s not feeling well. He makes the grilled cheese then he immediately showers to get the smell off him but he makes it regardless.

Best friend: depending on the playthrough it swaps between felix and nate, but felix feels more in character

Why them?: alma loves felix’s sense of adventure and nosiness. Most of all she loves that he won’t judge her for pulling the same shit every now and then.

What were their first impressions of each other?: alma was super thrown off by that hand kiss. “who the fuck is this mischief-maker?” while nate was very kind and warm, felix (surprisingly) was the UB teammate that really humanized the rest of the team for alma. he’s fun and genuine and wants everyone else to be happy together. felix was incredibly interested to learn more about alma, as a human, as his boss’s daughter, and then as a friend when she readily accepted the supernatural and, by extension, him as a vampire. The fact that she’s easily flustered or surprised really works in his favor because he lives for being the most shocking person in the room.

What do they do to spend time together?: they share music, they dance, and they text A LOT. lots of memes, lots of “what does [x] mean?” “oh nice” “[proceeds to use the thing they just learned incorrectly]”. they also compare and share hair products.

Anything else you’d like to share: they each have a tamagotchi named after the other (baby felix and baby alma) and they compete to see who can keep theirs alive the longest. everyone loses.

OTHER RELATIONSHIPS (Feel free to go in-depth!)

Relationship with Rebecca: oof okay. alma seeks rebecca’s approval and depends on her for a sense of safety and “stability.” in some ways, she wants to be exactly like her mom: strong, independent, unbothered, worldly. but a lot of that shatters the longer alma works professionally with rebecca and with the revelations surrounding rook. alma sees how much rebecca uses her as a crutch, projects her perceived failures onto alma’s life, and over-shelters her.

Relationship with Rook: alma doesn’t remember him and tries not to think of him often or fondly or at all BUT she has so many of his things. his flannels, his detective badge, his ancient comic book collection (which is the only reason she has her own). she has his eyes and his impulsive streak, his care for people of all varieties. she IS rook’s daughter and she ignores that fact so it doesn’t hurt her.

Relationship with Bobby: they used to be very close, slightly flirty friends but there’s no way in hell alma can trust him now. (i originally had bobby as alma’s ex but it was all getting a little too Bella Swan for me. like bobby, douglas, the werewolves, falk, and mason like????? it was a bit much so bobby’s just an old ex-friend)

Relationship with Verda: alma fucking loves verda. that’s her mentor, that’s her dad friend. she feels a sense of Pride and Accomplishment when she can make verda laugh or impress him in the lab, or both. alma’s fond of spending evenings over his place with eric and the kids, making dinner, or just hanging out.

Relationship with Tina: tina was alma’s first friend as a kid. they lost touch in high school because tina was bubbly and cute and popular, while alma was… not. but the summer before they left for college they ran into each other at a house party and since that reconnection, they’ve been thick as thieves. it was like nothing had changed. tina is a light in alma’s life, and alma lets tina lean into the stranger parts of herself without judgment.

Relationship with the Mayor: thinks he’s a creep and a bad parent.

Relationship with Capt. Sung: appreciates how he prioritizes the town and its people, but thinks he could loosen up a bit.

Relationship with Haley: haley is a couple of years older than alma but they’ve known each other forever. alma admires haley’s work ethic and cheery attitude.

Relationship with Elidor: oh man, alma is absolutely stunned by elidor. he’s beautiful, kind, and knowledgeable. in those early days, elidor is responsible for quite a bit of her supernatural education. alma grills him while he nurses her back to health. her curiosity is refreshing to him.

Relationship with Tapeesa/Vieno: alma thinks vieno is cute and funny, says hi when she sees them around, but they’re not best friends or anything. she can’t shake the thought that they’re basically a fae version of danny devito.

Relationship with Unit Alpha: absolutely smitten with lesedi. she’s never seen a more beautiful woman. tamiko ends up being a pretty good friend. the twins are on her social periphery but alma’s not close with them.

Relationship with the Maa-alused: alma sincerely wants to help them adjust to life in this world and takes that goal very seriously. at the same time she really really wishes falk hadn’t developed this weird attachment to her.

Do they have any other important relationships, past or present? (Relatives, friends, etc.?): YES. i’ve thrown another oc in wayhaven for the express purpose of being The Detective. His name is javi. alma met him in college and they were fast friends. alma convinced him to try out wayhaven after graduation. They lived together for a while and now they, along with tina, can often be seen in the corner booth of chen’s pub.

she was also very close with her maternal grandmother before she died. she was raised by her while rebecca was absent, but i need to develop this more.

her cat, october, whom she’s had for five years. he’s a sweet, mostly black tortie that can hardly meow. alma adopted him as an adult when she got her own place.

PERSONAL BIO

Describe their personality: alma is so open and ready to accept new possibilities. she’s the sort of person that embraces what scares her, finds beauty in it, and loves it intensely. she’s sharp and resourceful. i wouldn’t exactly describe her as hard-working, but she’s knowledgeable about her field and tries to be helpful when she has a goal in mind.

she’s quite tactile. touchy with other people. likes to use her hands for work or hobbies. she doesn’t really mind being alone for long stretches of time but would prefer not to be. she wants others to want to be around her.

she’s also terrible at being honest about her trauma. everything is fine, she’s fine, she doesn’t need to talk about this :) :) :) she will handle the breakdown when it happens and not one second before. also, with quick wit comes uncontrollable sarcasm and it does not always hit well.

Where in the world is their Wayhaven?: super torn here because wayhaven feels inland to me, but i think i’ve finally settled on the north carolina coast but not like the outer banks area. If not there, then maybe virginia, closer to the chesapeake bay.

What is their personal history?: alma is born to rook and rebecca in wayhaven. spends her childhood being raised mostly by her grandmother, idolizes rebecca. academic success comes easily for her; a heavy interest in science leads to a scholarship at a university just far away enough to feel like she’s Leaving The Nest. alma dates a bit in college but she’s the type to end up becoming friends with everyone she sleeps with and romance is difficult for her to cultivate. when she does date, the relationships are short-lived. she returns to wayhaven after school and puts her degree to work in wayhaven’s police department. she wishes she’d applied for a position in the city but craves the comfort (and tbh, the low stakes) of home.

If they weren’t a detective, what would their dream job be?: she’s a forensic analyst and honestly?? it’s a pretty dreamy job for her. she loves being a scientist, loves helping people, and isn’t easily grossed out.

Anything else you’d like to share: has tried to stay overnight in an ikea. did not succeed.

10. Do you have any other A:TLA ships?

Sukka is a very close second to Zutara, i love them so much!

I also really like Mailee, I just feel like they would be so cute together, and more recently I've started shipping Taang. They just work so well together and balance each other out so well.

I also love Yuetara! Oh and Bakoda. Those dads have my whole entire heart.

15. What do you think would have happened if Katara and Zuko hadn’t been interrupted in the Catacombs?

Hmmm... this is tricky. I think if they'd been there together for a couple more hours, Katara would've ended up healing him eventually (or trying), but it would've taken some time to get to that point.

I think Zuko would initially have agreed to it, and then he would've hesitated and stopped her. He is still very conflicted about his scar and whether he deserved it or not, and, by extension, whether he still wants or deserves his father's love and approval. That is, after all, why he ends up betraying her in canon.

So he hesitates, as she's about to start the process, and turns away. She gently presses him and asks him what's wrong. And he sees the look of genuine concern and patience on her face, and he's shocked at the amount of support his enemy is showing him. So he talks. He tells her a little about how he got his scar, no details, but gives her the gist. He tells her about his banishment, and his quest to hunt the avatar, and the whole time he's thinking, "why the hell am i telling her all this? I don't even know her." And Katara listens and empathizes as she did with Jet, and Haru, and Aang, and all the others, and she is horrified on his behalf.

She tells him, "it's not your fault."

And he looks at her like she's lost it because "what do you mean it's not my fault, i did horrible things to you and your friends."

And so she clarifies, "it's not your fault for getting that scar. No 13 year old boy should have to go through that."

And they sit in silence for a long time. Zuko ponders what she has said, compares it with all of iroh's comforting and supportive words over the years, and then contrasting them with ozai's words, with azula's. Katara sits in her own thoughts, trying to reconcile the zuko sitting before her with the spoiled prince she's fought countless times, and she can hardly believe they're the same person.

Finally, zuko concedes. So katara takes the spirit water out of its vial and she tries to heal him.

Nothing happens. The special properties of the spirit water have been used up, but zuko's scar is still there. When he realizes this, he jerks away from her and sits down.

"I'm sorry, Zuko."

"It doesn't matter," he snaps back, a hint of his old self, but it's half-hearted. "It was a stupid idea anyway." He falls silent, glaring at the ground, cursing himself inwardly.

Katara understands that he doesn't want to talk anymore. She doesn't really know what she would say anyway. She sits down on the other side of the cave, and stares at the vial of spirit water, wondering if she's just made a huge mistake.

There's a long stretch of silence again.

And then, "Thank you, Katara."

Katara just smiles.

When Iroh and Aang find them later, they are still sitting on opposite sides of the cave, but they are facing each other.

And when Zuko comes to his crossroads of destiny, he can't bring himself to betray Katara, or his uncle, the way he does in canon. When Iroh talks to him after Katara leaves with Aang, and before Azula arrives, Zuko remembers what Katara said, about how it wasn't his fault. So even though he still doesn't quite believe it, when Azula shows up with her offer to bring him back to their father as a hero, he can't quite bring himself to believe that either. He cannot prove to himself, beyond a reasonable doubt, that his father will accept him, now that even his (former?)enemy has expressed concern for his situation.

So he chooses his uncle, and helps the Gaang.

I have way more thoughts on this but this is already way too long than it ever needed to be, so i apologize lol.

TL;DR Zuko would have agreed to being healed, it wouldn't have worked, but he still would have switched sides, to some extent.

19. What do you think would have happened if A:TLA got a Book 4?

Part of me thinks it would've just been the plot of the comics, like the Promise and the Search, but with the Ehaszs in the writer's room it probably would've looked a little different.

For example, the characters would've been... in character. We would've gotten to see Zuko struggle with becoming Fire Lord and stabilizing the country, and a lot of that would've involved him struggling with the baggage of his ancestors, and his own issues with not wanting to become like his father, but i think that, unlike in the comics, the Gaang would've helped support him. I'm not even going to get into what they did to Katara in the comics... i pretend i do not see.

I've heard rumours that, had a fourth season occurred, Aang would've found a community of descendents of Air Nomads in the Fire Nation. I have no idea how much truth there is to this notion, but I'm just gonna roll with it.

So because Aang and Zuko are deutarogonists of the story, I'm imagining that, along with their mutual efforts to balance the world as Fire Lord and Avatar, Zuko's search for his mother and Aang's search for the remnants of his people would be tied together as the main sort of overarching plot of the season.

There are so many interesting things to be done with this: Aang would have to properly face the trauma of the genocide of the Air Nomads, without the tight deadline of the Comet as a distraction; Zuko would be grappling with his fear of becoming like his father, while being piled on with the stress of being the leader of a divided and wartorn country, while also desperate to find out what happened to his mother; I feel like a lot of the "filler" episodes would be about Aang and the gaang dealing with on-the-ground type rebuilding and peacemaking.

As for the rest of the gaang (and this has been pulled straight out of my ass - it's just stuff I would want to happen tbh): Katara and Sokka would go back to the SWT and fight against the NWT's heavy influence on the rebuilding efforts; Toph would put off going back to her parents for as long as possible until she can't anymore; Suki would get a backstory!!!!!!!! And it would be kickass.

Finally, the canon ships would (hopefully) get more development. Katara would have agency in her own love story, and she and Aang would actually talk about their feelings and what a relationship really means! Mai and Zuko would probably still fight a lot tbh. They still don't really understand each other at the end of season 3, and they would have to grapple with that.

Suki and Sokka are just chilling though. They would probably continue being healthy and communicative. Yknow, like they are in canon. Although, i do think there is some potential for conflict left over from EIP, of Sokka still deeply wounded from Yue's sacrifice, and having to properly heal from that. Actually, while he's at it, there are a couple of other things he could do with properly processing...

Regarding the racebending thing, you mentioned that Alison, Klaus and Ben are optional. I know you explained Klaus but what do you mean by ben and Alison?

ooohkay so.

just to reiterate: racebending is a case-by-case process because of all that you need to take into account when you do it. same with genderbending or queerbending. it works when doing so doesn’t lead to terrible implications, or when the aspect of the identity of the character that you are changing never mattered much to their story anyway.

when it comes to queerbending, the hargs are fantastic for it (noteL added link for future ref) because so much of their story is allegorical for being a big queer found family (the same way it's allegorical for them being, say, symbolic of different aspects of abuse).

with gender... i mean. it's gotta be 50/50. it's bad that the team isn't three women, three men and klaus. that still needs to be fixed.

allison and vanya's character arcs are tied to their experiences as women, and it's a bad look to make the gender imbalance even worse. they have to stay as is. there's a case to be made for making vanya trans, but she'd have to be a trans woman.

luther's arc is tied to his experience as a man, and as the expectations laid on being "the man of the house" and diego's inadequacies stem from his toxic masculinity. they also need to stay male. and it'd be such a bad idea to make luther trans given his body, and diego's tied up in such cis kind of masculinity that making them trans doesn't really cut it either.

klaus having such an unusual relationship with gender, and being most likely nonbinary needs to be preserved. it's too essential to his character. don't touch it.

ben has potential... but there's a big pitfall. being the sweet sibling everyone felt safe around could easily remain if he were female, but you have to be careful to write her out of being the Fridged Girl / Tragic Girlfriend given that she dies first. especially given that she haunts klaus, idk man. girl spending eternity picking up after her shitty brother? hate that. and the queerness of klaus and ben's relationship depletes a bit if she's a girl. you can do it. but watch out.

number five's power has nothing to do with gender and growing up in a world devoid of gender roles, and then coming back and having to adhere to it again (and being stuck in the body of a little girl, who no one takes seriously, even as she raises serious concerns and is the most competent by far) could be very interesting if five were female. tbh i'd genderbend five if we were to do it again.

and with race, it's also kind of necessary. they're supposed to be representative of the whole world that reginald searched to find them. them all being white in the comic made no sense. only two of them being poc in the show also doesn't make sense.

so:

luther and five need to be white. because racebending luther will just lead to unfixable terrible implications because of his ape body, and five is luther’s twin, so he must be whatever luther is.

diego and vanya should be people of color, because their whiteness doesn't affect their storylines/characterization, and being people of color would enhance those stories. they can be any number of things, but diego works best as a latino character, and vanya as an asian one (hell, look at lila. she’s literally a frankenstein’s monster of pieces of comic vanya, and her being asian feels like a prelude to this change happening fully next time around-- someone noticed the next evolution of vanya’s character, but they did it too late, after they'd already cast someone white, so they pushed forward with the vanya-replacement as a consolation).

klaus, allison and ben fall in between those categories: you can racebend them, but you have to be careful or you could really fuck it up.

klaus can be a person of color, but given how many snags you can trip over in executing that on top of everything else he must be (queer, gnc, an addict), if you can't juggle all those things individually and intersectionally, then you shouldn't. because fucking up could lead to the creation of something genuinely offensive.

ben can be a person of color, as long as you're smart about which way you racebend him, given that he's The Dead One. for instance, it might not be a good idea to make him black, because that instantly invokes Black Guy Dies First stereotyping and you’ll have a hard time trying to work your way out of that one. i think him being asian is a smart choice, especially if vanya is also asian-- the 'only asian character is the dead one' issue evaporates, then.

allison is special. unlike the other characters, her race does actually affect her story.

her status as The Sister Reginald Decided To Keep does involve her whiteness. it might not be particularly prevalent when both she and vanya are white, but it’s there. and if vanya isn't white and she is? big factor.

her assassination of jfk. in the comics, she does so by impersonating jackie kennedy in order to get close enough to rumor him to death. a woc wouldn't be able to make that swap.

her romance with luther has added unfortunate implications if she isn't a white woman, because as many antis pointed out in s1, having a woc be in love with a gorilla man can stoke up some bad stereotypes.

so there is a case to be made for allison staying white. however, unlike with luther for example, all of those necessities and roadblocks can be written in such a way that accounts for and incorporates how race plays into her story and uses it to make said story stronger.

allison's being The One Reginald Kept can still be a story about marginalization if she's a woman of color: shift focus to making the story about palatability. vanya wouldn’t/couldn’t conform, but allison could and would. so explore it: she did everything she could to assimilate and it worked, but at what cost? how much did she lose, and how does she feel about it? (this becomes much more prevalent if both sisters are woc)

allison must kill jfk by rumoring him, but the way she goes about it doesn't matter nearly as much. so she can't hop into the car with jfk? have her rumor him in the ambulance or the hospital after he's shot, or his hotel room, or at the conference he has before he leaves for the motorcade. is allison being in the car with him that important? have her use that commission time tech to freeze time long enough to jump in, rumor him, and jump out before anyone can stop her. it can be done. you just have to get a little creative.

allison must be in a relationship with luther, but as long as you just make the execution of it consensual, mutual, and not absorbed in sexuality (like the show went out of its way to do on day one) then you've ripped the bad implication out before it could take root.

allison’s story actually does have a lot hinging on race. but if you know how to incorporate those things into her story, you can end up with something even stronger. not that the show did of course, but maybe someday someone will.

so,,, that’s what i mean by klaus, ben and allison: it can be done, but you just have to be careful with the execution.

Brace yourself, long post incoming!

Give me a character and I will answer:

[Miles Upshur]

Why I like them: I like his humour and his rather cynic way of coping with whatever he is experiencing. At the same time, this guy is dead set on getting information and reveal Murkoff’s inhumane practices. Cynic, but with a heart of gold.

Why I don’t: If he stopped slamming the doors shut when he has an enemy on his ass, that would be great! On a more serious note, I don’t think there’s anything of note I truly dislike about him.

Favorite episode (scene if movie game): Since this is a video game and he is your protagonist... I like reading his notes. The end sequence is well-done, but really sad.

Favorite season/movie: Erm... Outlast 1? XD

Favorite line: Every time he describes one of the Variants is great. But I’m going to go with: “[...] You've escaped one Hell, Chris Walker. God help me but I somehow hope you didn't find another.”

Favorite outfit: He only has one. I think the casual outfit suits his purposes just fine.

OTP: Miles and freedom.

Brotp: Waylon, Blake, and Lisa. :3

Head Canon: Walrider!Miles experiences not only nightmares (or nightmarish visions) related to the trauma he experienced at the asylum, but also those of every test subject who has ever been put through the Engine. It’s a general headcanon I have regarding the Engine and its effect on people.

Unpopular opinion: I do believe this guy has some smarts since his job as a freelance investigator investigating dangerous affairs certainly requires them. He might be stubborn, but that’s due to conviction, not a lack of sense of self-preservation as the fandom sometimes portrays it...

A wish: Should we ever get a sequel to the existing Outlast games, it’d be cool to hear about him or even have a cameo, depending on his true state.

An oh-god-please-don’t-ever-happen: Hmm... Given the rather vague allusions in the comic, I am hoping his story hasn’t found a definite end after all.

5 words to best describe them: Snarky, determined, athletic, risk-taker, inquisitive

My nickname for them: Buddy! Miles is a fairly short name already... I just call him Miles, tbh XD

[Eddie Gluskin]

Why I like them: Definitely a fleshed-out character who has an interesting history that ties into the delusion he developed thanks to the Engine. I also like his artistic side. His section in the game, despite being rather long, also creates one of the tensest in the DLC.

Why I don’t: Blatant, old-fashioned misogyny. Although I can’t say I dislike him based on this because few characters in Outlast are without their... dirt. Otherwise the other thing I dislike relates more to fanon interpretations... Oh, his haircut could also use some work!

Favorite episode (scene if movie game): I like the build-up to his encounter to be honest.

Favorite season/movie: Whistleblower, duh XD

Favorite line: “We've met before haven't we? I know I've seen your face. Maybe... Just before I woke up.” The last one especially is an interesting one to me in context of the Engine.

Favorite outfit: I think the one he wears during the outbreak is neat enough. Crude, but better than being in underwear XD

OTP: nO.

Brotp: Trager :3 I call them “amateur surgeons”.

Head Canon: Some of the mentality he harbours post!Engine derives directly from his pre!Engine state. Obviously the Engine tends to exaggerate certain traits, but with the murders he had committed he was more likely to put the blame on his victims; if he did not outright deny his culpability.

Unpopular opinion: Lots. I don’t think he is as handsome as some people make him out to be. Though this is purely subjective. Maybe it’s that haircut.

A wish: Some kind of an elaboration on whatever was going on with Dennis? I wonder whether Eddie was even aware of him/them and the sacrifices made.

An oh-god-please-don’t-ever-happen: For Eddie to pull through with his goal of having offspring with his victims brides. Thankfully it didn’t, though said victims appear to be horribly mutilated instead...

5 words to best describe them: Persistent, murderous, traumatized, quick-tempered, old-fashioned.

My nickname for them: The Groom? Eddie? Amateur surgeon number two?

[Richard Trager]

Why I like them: He has charisma, humour, and it contrasts the rather morbid and terrifying... everything else around him. He provides one of the most memorable dialogues of the series. I also like the concept behind him of being a former Murkoff executive tossed into the program as a patient and developing this surgeon delusion.

Why I don’t: I’ve said it before, but I have my gripes with some of his comic characterization.

Favorite episode (scene if movie game): His cutscene in the first game of course! I also liked that brief interaction with Mr. Langen.

Favorite season/movie: Not many options here.

Favorite line: All of them are great, including the ones from the Xbox trailer, but for this ask I’ll highlight “Let’s teach you the seven habits of highly eviscerated people.”

Favorite outfit: I can’t say I’m a fan of that preppy look he has in the comic per se going by my own aesthetic preferences, although it’s oddly fitting, so this leaves me with... an apron. Yeah, while I have taken a like to the comic design after some time getting used to it, nothing beats his in-game version :D

OTP: No.

Brotp: As above, Eddie Gluskin. There is little content for it, but what I’ve seen in most cases is lovely.

Head Canon: Rick doesn’t like having his hair touched, pre!Engine and post!Engine, unless it’s someone really close to him (heh). This reaches back to his childhood.

Unpopular opinion: I honestly don’t consider the coke thing to be as funny or trivial as the fandom sometimes portrays it...

A wish: An epic comeback! And generally more canon information on how he came to be the Variant we see in-game, and how Billy’s premonition ties into it.

An oh-god-please-don’t-ever-happen: He’s dead so... It’s a bit difficult to say at this point. There is a thing that ties into my NOTP, but that’s more of an unpopular opinion and fandom thing.
