met a VERY charming lil friend yesterday who i have never (knowingly) seen before!!! 🖤💛

this is the Sequoia Pitch moth (Synanthedon sequoiae), yes, moth! these fascinating little creatures bear an incredible resemblance to members of the family Vespidae, like common paper wasps and yellowjackets, and that’s no simple coincidence!

the appearance of these moths is an example of Batesian mimicry, a type of mimicry where one species mimics the warning signals of another species, but without having the same harmful or undesirable defences.

in this case these moths look like they may give you a nasty sting, but really they’re about as harmless as a moth can be! (plus they have gorgeous slightly iridescent black-lined wings and fluffy little shrimp-like tails! absolute cuties!)

I’ll preface this video with the warnings, starting off with it is hella angsty. I don’t know what I was on when I started this but… it’s not jolly. Second:

TW: Brief alcohol depiction, lots of crying, sort of period-typical homophobia/repressed feelings, and sexual lyrics (the animatic doesn’t really visually interpret them.)

Alr so uhm. Yeah, as stated in the video, I started this in December of 2022. So. It’s a tad bit old. I thought it would be fun to post it on the first day of 2025 and be like, “hey! Look at how my art progressed!” But then I uh…didn’t finish it in time and also that just felt inappropriate (?? 💀) so uhm. Here you go!

I really, really like to play around with Jack and Sammy’s relationship. Of course when I started this, I was a bigger fan of it being one-sided than I am now, but I’ll roll with it. So that’s pretty much what the animatic is about. I’ll leave it sort of up to interpretation with the specifics because I’m not really sure I have a set idea myself.

Foul Legacy greeting you after a very physically and mentally taxing day. just getting home extremely tired and being scooped up by a pair of sturdy arms, a single crystalline eye staring at you, overjoyed. when you lean against his fluff he knows you're exhausted, chittering quietly and carrying you to your room. it's finally quiet in there, the curtains drawn shut over the windows and the constant noise of the outdoors muffled- in fact, the only thing you can hear is Legacy's soft, constant purring as he sets you down.

you feel the blanket being tugged over your shoulders and wordlessly reach out to grab Foul Legacy's claw, smiling at the surprised chirp he lets out. silently you tug him closer, motioning for him to lay down next to you, and he complies with delight, rumbling contently when you sling an arm over his waist and snuggle closer. you hum, the stress draining from your body as you're finally comfortable- nothing is too hot, too cold, too loud, too bright- you're safe and happy here, with an Abyssal monster beside you.

you lean up to give Legacy a quick peck before settling down for a nap, and just before you drift off, you swear you feel a small lick on your cheek.
