metagross was his very first pokemon and is his ace. the two met when steven had absconded and broke off from the family as a young teenager, both in seemingly awful condition and having befriended each other through shared hardship.

skarmory and aggron came next and were the ones who helped steven clear most of the gyms in the region. his reigning team had three others from the hoenn region, beloved by steven, however they do not accompany him post championship and remain with roxanne.

the rest of his team he met and befriended throughout his travels to other regions. excadrill in unova, aegislash in kanto, and tinkaton in paldea. the team composition above is the team he has settled on for battling and traveling, as they accompany him most of the time if not all.

steven has hordes of pokemon trained elsewhere, scattered across hoenn as well. probably will be a separate post on that one day.
