1) Funny- the request needs to be humorous, memes usually the most popular but dnd in jokes and other shitpostery is welcome. i abide by the MBMBAM NO BUMMERS rule - there are plenty of sad/deep/beautiful calligraphers out there who’d be happy to work with yall, but this isn’t that sort of channel

3) Amount of Requests - I am trying to be fair but i am one person running almost the ENTIRE thing, logistics, tech, etc, I have twitch mods and a roommate for retrieving things and that's it. 4) Content - I will not do anything I consider under the umbrella of general assholery - this includes racial slurs, edgelord bullshit, exclusionist jackassery etc. Please be kind to each other. So, I started DMing about 16 years ago now. I started with DnD 3.5 and have since moved on to plenty of other things. I've burnt out more than a few times, pretty hard, for a year or longer. But I've always come back to the hobby eventually. Nowadays I'm quite conscious of what has made my motivation and passion go up in flame, and it's a simple thing, it's working.

Not to be confused with the capitalist grind house that is the 5 day/40 hour work week. But instead I'm talking about the headspace in the days before sessions, hours spent alone writing, making battlemaps, pouring over the stat blocks of monsters and what ever else. It's an isolating part of the hobby at times, but necessary for some games. It's when the prep becomes a chore though, when the satisfaction of a good session or affirmations from your group no longer recharge the motivation needed to set up another game, that you have begun to work. And continuing in this headspace is such a toxic place that is wildly insidious.

I've found myself forcing the prep to happen at times, grinding it out to have things ready for my friends. Only to realize at the end of the night that I never had any fun. I never felt any satisfaction. And at the worst of times, even resentful of my players, friends who I know would want me to take care of myself and make sure I'm having fun. But I say "I had a great time and I can't wait for next week" because not having a session ready would make me feel like I'm letting them down. That I'm failing them.

So I keep things light now. I say if I'm not feeling up to things. I derail my own games in the most enjoyable way I can for us. I just propose we have a one shot or board game night instead occasionally. I only DM for a few months at a time instead of meandering weekly forever games, before transitioning to something else. All in all, I'm making sure my beloved hobby isn't work, but love.

I study biomed. 1st year. I'm 25. Do you think it's worth to do medicine after so I'll finish in 6 years.

Time wise, it's up to you. being a new doctor at 31 or 32 isn't the end of the world - I know people who started studying medicine in their late 30s or 40s! The main issue is that some specialties will require longer training, and realistically require getting a PhD, so you might become a consultant later than your peers. But that doesn't mean it can't work for you. The main problem is that it'll be longer before you're making consultant money (and therefore more financially stable) and more importantly you'll be older when you're still moving between different hospitals or towns, and doing exams. You'll be older when you go through the silly rotas with their night shifts and late shifts - so it'll be harder on you physically. I became a doc in my mid/late 20s, and have taken a rather meandering path, with some years out of training, and changing from one training pathway to another - I'll be starting GP training at 34, and presumably be 37 by the time I'm a GP, providing I don't take time out for kids or go less than full time - both of which are reasonably likely. And I'm happy with that choice - because I feel it was the right one for me. I have to admit that the length of training did play into my choice to go into GP rather than stay in hospital, but it was by no means the main reason - and your feelings and reasons may be entirely different. Is it harder to study when you're older? Yeah. Are you more likely to have or want to take on grownup obligations like looking after kids or a partner (or a mortgage etc)? Yeah. Is it harder to do night shifts and work long hours when you're a bit older? Yeah. Personally I do not love them as much as I used to. But you'll be in your 30s, you're not decrepit by any means. For some people, it feels too late - and that's fine. it's fine to just want a stable job, with no exams, no night shifts, no long university course before you even get to do said difficult things, and to just have your life sorted in your 30s.

Personally, I don't regret going into medicine later than usual. One problem I also want to mention is that there's no guarantee you'll get into a 4 year medicine specialised postgraduate course (if you're in the UK, that is. If you're somewhere where it's always 4 years, carry on), as opposed to a 5 year course - the 4 year courses are much better subsidised and therefore much more competitive, so bear that in mind as well. But even if you took a longer course, it's fine - as long as you've got a financial plan in place for studying for longer, and how you're going to fund it. As always, I'm happy to have medblr weigh in on the topic.

I will always remember the moment I heard that they first rolled out covid vaccines in the UK.

I sat in my car, crying because now my vulnerable patients stood a chance. My parents would get vaccinated and be a lot less likely to die of covid. I would have to see less people die of this disease. It felt like a historic moment.

And I myself got vaccinated as soon as I could, and encouraged all my loved ones to follow suit.

Anyhow. This week I cried because we now have a vaccine for malaria, and many children around the world will be less likely to die or get very sick with malaria. Malaria kills hundreds of thousands of people a year, and around half of them are children. It is literally hard to imagine the scale of the suffering that malaria causes.

This is a momentous achievement. Now we need to make sure that the people who will benefit get access as soon as possible.

One of the worst things about this pandemic is the way the illness has been framed - as something most people don’t really need to worry about, because most people dying or getting really sick have pre-existing conditions. When people say this, it makes me feel like the lives of my patients are being devalued. Yes, we are bloody lucky that it doesn’t affect most people severely. We’re lucky that it doesn’t lead to chonic illness in most sufferers. We’re incredibly lucky that it rarely seriously affects children. It could always be worse. I thank my lucky stars that covid-19 didn’t kill me and that whatever damage it did to my body can be lived with. But people with pre-existing conditions matter. That’s people like your little brother with asthma. Your best friend with depression. Your dad and his high blood pressure. Your gran and her diabetes. Most of us have pre-existing conditions, even if they are mild and don’t affect our quality of life or our life expectancy. Even if we are referring to people with serious conditions, they have as much right to be safe and try to live a long and healthy life ad anyone else. They can and do live for many years with their health conditions - with the hard work of their medical teams, their loved ones and the patient themselves. They are valued and important in their own right, and I wish you could see how hard many of us work to get someone with serious health problems back to full health. It takes an army of people to help someone back up when they are struggling. I feel so, so sad thinking about all the people who could have enjoyed a few more months with loved ones - or maybe even years, if the pandemic hadn’t snatched them away. Now that cases are going up, that means more and more people are dying before their time, from a cause that could have been prevented if our government had gotten its response in order. My patients’ lives matter, and I’m tired of them being seen as expendable because ‘this disease only affect people with pre-existing conditions’ - when in reality it can harm almost anyone. And even if it only affected the most vulnerable, their lives matter, and they have a right to be taken seriously and protected.

Finished a DnD one-shot adventure at level 16 with the BF, run by a friend.

I played a cleric, and an NPC was injured, poisoned AND cursed and I absolutely commend our friend the DM for replicating the "SHIT what the FUCK is wrong with this patient?!?!" feeling in-game.

Yes this is not getting put in the widofjord tag because I don’t like filling up others’ searches with something that is not “directly” linked. *jazz hands* anxiety. BUT here is all I could think of and a sprinkling of things I have seen asked about or mentioned in the comments! May this and the last chapter hold you over <3

Q: Why a text fic?

A: Honestly? I have only ever seen one from VM (there may be others, but I don’t read many fics out of my niche sections?) that was between Grog/Vax (I don’t ship it but when it’s a bar shift #3 in a row that’s 14 hours long, you need entertainment). I had read also Call Me, Beep Me from the VLD fandom as well as Misuse of Stark Technology and thought that it was a strong platform for conversation and storytelling that shows multiple perspectives at once without the constant POV whiplash that can happen otherwise. And with the strong and chaotic personalities of TM9 and the diverse ways the NPCs interacted fit in, I hoped it wouldn’t be that hard to pull off.

I’ll be honest, I was not sure if it would work out or catch on as it is not the most popular form of storytelling. As many people said in the comments of chapters 1-5, people generally don’t enjoy texting fics and skip past them. I am glad I took the risk and that everyone has with me.

 Q: Is it true you have not watched past Ep. 40?

A: Yes. Campaign 2 came out just before I started school, and I decided school deserved my full attention. I was also not as attached at large with the cast as an ensemble as I was with VM. This combined with having anxiety and needing something to be finished before I can enjoy made it difficult to get back into C2. I was lucky that I started Campaign 1 a few weeks before that ended. I will probably watch it when everything is over, but I mostly follow through spoilers and Arsequeef’s gifs.

 Q: What are some of your influences for this?

A: I have seen a lot of people loving the realism of the conversations. I don’t watch TV or movies, but I watch streamers mostly, especially group streamers. Because of this, I tend to hear nothing but natural conversations. I also have been in group chats since the old AIM days and was a bartender for 6 years, so I have pulled from interactions that I have experienced around me. Often when something perfect happens in a chat with my friends I screen shot it for use later (the look spam and how do you uwu are both examples).

 Q: Why that area?

A: I like to use locations I know well if there is a lot of real-world interactions. I am from Massachusetts and I had used Savannah, Ga., for Here’s To Us, where I lived for 4 years.

 Q: Will the chat be renamed to The Mighty Nein or something similar?

A: No. The chat existed before Caleb as that and was set up originally by Fjord and Beau with Molly, Bryce, Darrow, and Yasha. It’s been the Game Hoes for too long in their life to change. There will be some side chats that appear and disappear.

  Q: Didn’t Veth work with Caleb?

A: Originally that was the plan, but halfway through the first chapter, I decided to space everyone out better and missed her name in one paragraph at the beginning of the chapter. I wanted them to know each other but avoid the trope of “direct connection” with strangers to lovers and text fics.

  Q: How tall is Fjord (and the rest of them by proxy)

A: I changed the heights because Caleb is canon “Average height” which in DnD is different than the US. So, he was given a few extra inches to put him at 5’10”. Fjord was scaled up because we love height differences to 6’3” because of that. By order of height:

Veth- 4’11, Kiri- 5’, Keg and Yeza- 5’3, Jester and Rissa- 5’4, Astrid- 5’5, Bryce, Beau, and Wulf- 5’9, Beau, Caleb, Molly, and Ava- 5’10, Yasha- 5’11, Darrow and Essek- 6’, Fjord and Gunther- 6’3, Cad and Enzo- 6’5.

I’m probably forgetting some people.

  Q: Why did Enzo’s arc allegedly end that way?

A: I’m not sure I’m done with him just yet, but the reason it had to be let go like that is simple: legality. Real world consequences to acts would have kind of thrown a wrench in how this all unfolds. And Molly was the character who I felt could bounce back the best from getting a solid ass kicking.

  Q: Why was Astrid faster at accepting than Wulf, and why is he so possessive?

A: Wulf was Caleb’s first real friend and that meant he was the redhead’s world. Astrid came second and she realized how quickly jealousy can sour something. Wulf’s jealousy fed into the break-up. So, despite the awkwardness, she wanted to show Caleb that she meant it when she said they could still be friends.

Wulf was Caleb’s first friend, and he has that sense of seniority in his mind and has a hard time accepting he is not being replaced when new people come around. And as a more dominant person, it was hard for him to have the normally docile friend speak out against him. He is still immature and needed to grow, but has a hard time seeing that is okay right now.

  Q: Where does everyone attend?

A: Amherst College- Astrid, Caleb, Essek, Wulf. Boston College- Cad. Emerson- Beau, Gunther, Enzo, Fjord, Keg, Molly, Rissa, and Yasha. Princeton- Bryce. Hofstra- Jester and Kiri. UConn- Yeza (Graduated). UMass/Boston University/Tufts- NPCs not brought in yet.

**Caleb has stated Jester lives in the City early on because Jester has all her locations on social set to NYC

 Q: Any reason why you picked those schools?

A: I’m a BC fan (and Providence College), my childhood friend went to Emerson, and I was accepted to Hoftstra before I joined the military instead. Amherst was a perfect “nearby” city that was another college town/I am maybe looking at Amherst for a PhD. Program.

 Q: Where is Darrow stationed when not crashing Bryce’s life or deployed? What does he do?

A: Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was attached to the 26th MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) that goes through the Mediterranean. He currently is on hospital duty as a temporary “relaxation period” for people who are deployed often. As he is a paladin, I thought it’d be a nice touch to have him as an FMF Corpsman.

  Q: Where is everyone from? The holidays showed people all over and it’s mentioned some people were not born in the US or where they were located.

A: This is where that spreadsheet I made comes in handy. Most of the people either grew up in or intend to stay in Massachusetts for a long while. As there are some of the major schools in that area, obviously people would be out of state.

Boston TM9 Party

The Clay Family is in Jamaica Plains, which is just outside of Boston proper. They are from there, minus Toya who is adopted as well and from Maine.

Molly was the godson of Cad’s mother, who is from England and his father had been stationed in England for some time, so when he was essentially orphaned and given up by the indirect family, she put through the paperwork to take him in. Fjord and Yasha stayed with them.

Fjord is originally from Texas, outside of El Paso. After he joined the Navy, he never intended to move home as he hated it there. He fell in love with New England when he was sent TAD (Temporary Assignment of Duty) to the naval base in Newport. He stayed and continued his education at Emerson.

Yasha is from Jamaica Plains as well and went to school with Molly and Ornna, who is the same age as them. Her dad is from South Carolina and her mother is from Okinawa. They moved up north for her dad’s work.

Beau is from Kentucky and her family is unreasonably wealthy. She decided to go to school someplace as un-Kentucky as she could fathom and was stuck between Berkley and Emerson but chose the former because the weather meant her mother would never visit.

The Amherst Crew (Astrid and Wulf) are all from the area except for:

Caleb, was born in Poland to a Polish/German family. They moved and when his family died in a fire (he was at a sleepover at the time) his grandparents took him in. Wulf was still there with his large family and

Essek had returned home to California for the break.

Astrid and her family spent 10 days in Key West for the holidays, which is why she missed the New York trip. Wulf stayed locally for winter break.

The Conn/NY/NJ Groups are pretty straightforward.

The Brenattos stayed in New Haven, where they moved when Luc was born from Amherst. They had moved so Veth could start fresh.

Jester was surprised by a visit from her mother on Christmas Day and spent it with her. It was the first time her mom came from the Ukraine, as Jester’s dad is the one who she moved with. She lives on Long Island not far from her school.

Kiri is from upstate New York and was home for the Holidays.

Bryce drove down to Louisiana. They and Darrow are from Marietta, but they were at their grandmother’s place in Lafourche Parish. Darrow returned to Jacksonville NC.

Others Keg and Gunther were in Rhode Island but separately, where they are both from, Rissa is from Maine and went home, and Enzo was in jail (he is from Lynn, Ma).

  Q: How old is everyone?

A: 5- Luc. 19- Kiri, 20- Jester, Rissa, Keg, and Enzo, 21- Beau, Molly, Yasha, Essek, and Astrid, 22- Caleb, Cali, Reani, and Wulf. 24- Cad, 25- Fjord and Bryce. 27- Veth and Darrow. 28- Yeza.

  Q: If Fjord has the GI Bill why does he live on campus or have a job?

A: For those who don’t know how the GI Bill works, the government pays for education and sends some money based on housing in the zip code of the school. Boston is insanely expensive and student living is easier. Essentially, he wanted the “college experience” and it was cheaper. He needs the job more because he knows better than to let himself get idle. If he does, he won’t focus on school. Like Travis, my Fjord has ADHD.

  Q: How did Veth and Caleb meet?

A: In a Juvenile’s in-patient program for at-risk teenagers and those suffering from mental health issues. Caleb’s depression and anxiety following the death of his parents and the constant bullying for numerous things and previous attempts or ideations had him labeled “at risk” for self-harm. He was in for 3 weeks. Veth was in for her kleptomania and possible signs of disruptive BPD or other developing personality disorders but aged out of the youth section when she turned 18. As most diagnoses cannot be done for those until adulthood, she was being watched for early onset signs.

  Q: How did Jester/Veth get into the group?

A: Jester met Beau, Yasha and Molly at NYCC two years’ prior in line for a panel. They met again at Anime Boston after exchanging Twitter handles a few months later. Jester had worked NYCC a year ago and helped Veth to a quiet room for Luc, who was fussing, then stayed with her as she was on break soon. She invited Veth to play a few games of Don’t Starve Together with her and Yasha before she was brought into the main group.

  Q: This is a really diverse cast. What is everyone and why?

A: Some were obvious choices such as Caleb being from Germany, Jester being from Eastern Europe (Ukrainian), and Molly as Irish (and English).

Others I did to flush out to make a group in a major city make more sense. Wulf and Astrid both have French/ Germanic backgrounds because in canon, they were raised in a similar way. Astrid is Jewish along with Caleb to hint at why it may have been easier for them to date if her family was stricter than his.

Fjord and Yasha faced some racial issues early on in the show (Yasha from where she was from and Fjord for being a half orc), so I wanted them to be people of color. Yasha is half Japanese because of her name and because US troops often marry someone from Japan when they are single and stationed there. Her father is Jamaican in decent. Fjord’s dad he figures is Black but they’ve never met, as his mother’s side are Mexican. I chose that because I wanted to keep the Texan because a lot of people in the service are from Texas. Also, as previously stated, I had too many naturalized or foreign students already and needed to not stress over how they would be around for the breaks.

Cad is English, Norwegian, and Swedish because Cad is a god, who why not make him a Norse god? Veth is half Cambodian partially because there is a decent population size in Massachusetts. Beau is the not white-passing cousin of her family which will come in later because rich families have secrets, yo. Her family has some Cajun/Creole in her like Darrow but it shouldn’t be there according to her family lineage. 

Essek is Persian, Rissa is Puerto Rican, Bryce and Keg are “Confused American Mixes” of everything. Cali I have not decided yet, but will probably have some English in her, Reani I have decided on Moroccan. Kiri is Korean. 

Enzo is an asshole (he’s also mix of random European heritage.) I feel like I missed someone.

  Q: Is Widofjord the only pairing we will see?

A: There are some others forming, including BeauYasha, which was one of the possibilities when I started. Molly/Essek/Astrid were a shock and some others I won’t spoil just yet are starting to bud as hopefuls.

  Q: Do you have an end game in sight?

A: Honestly, as this whole fic has taken on a life of its own, not entirely. It was originally mapped out to be 12 chapters long and have much of this condensed down with all the side characters removed, no Enzo or hockey games, and the extra fluff cut out. As I wrote it, I found I enjoyed that almost more than the Widofjord specifics. So, this has really evolved away from a Widofjord ONLY fic, I am aware. Endgame wise, when I feel the story is told, I will wind it down, but there are more elements evolving with every chapter and I want these characters to get the moments they’re aiming toward. I also don’t want it to drag on too long, so I know that this will eventually come to an end.

 Q: Did anything change relationship wise while writing?

A: 100%. Beau and Jester were originally who I expected to pan out, but my Jes couldn’t seem to devote to that because she had developed more attraction to Molly and Fjord than I expected. Beau and Yasha just clicked better. Molly was the next option for Jester, but then I decided to make Essek and Astrid actual friends with the TM9 and we see how that went.

 Q: Is Jester going to find something happier? It kind of sucked seeing her so down and withdrawn these last few chapters. And where is Nott’s role now?

A: I am trying with Jessy. I am. Here’s to hoping she behaves? As for Nott, she is shining as the mom friend, but her coming into the fray more means bad things are happening. And yes, that is on the way.

 Q: You keep hinting at something in both Caleb and Fjord’s pasts. Are we ever going to see that?

A: Yes. I am trying to space out the angst as much as possible. This was never meant to be a hurt/comfort type story, but people have mental health issues and those because pivotal to the story more than I intended. Maybe the curse of having complete access to everyone’s conversations? But they will be coming out.

i feel guilty cause I love my partner and everything but he’s so fucking annoying sometimes. Like he has a short temper and is a very very very VERY sore loser so literally anything that happens like, dying once in dark souls or breaking an armor piece in Minecraft or losing a hearthstone game he has a fucking melt down about how it’s not fair and it’s so stupid and whatever whatever and then he feels bad because when he loses his temper it makes me un fuxking comfortable and I won’t interact with him until he calms down beyond like ‘that sucks’ bc like I get it games can make you upset and I know it’s not always ‘just a game’ but also his reaction is soooooooooooooooooooooooo out of proportion for the event that triggers it. and like now he’s been stressed out since Saturday because a new hearthstone expansion released today and the new dnd book came out and he got an update on the progress of a kick starter he contributed to and then at work the dev told him they couldn’t do something but then another coworker talked to the same client and then the devs and they could do the thing they told him they couldn’t and so then he had a melt down about how he’s stupid and terrible and then couldn’t get any work done because he felt bad about himself so then he’s even more overwhelmed and anyways. We just went to the game store to pick up his preordered fucking book and the binding is fucked and pages are falling out and so now he’s literally having a breakdown sobbing and can’t talk or express anything. He fully 100% shuts down when he feels any emotion so like the second he feels a tiny bit embarrassed or mad or sad it’s literally full on non verbal shut down for days on end. It’s so fucking frustrating. Like I’m just living my life and trying to be better and he just has less than 0 control of his emotions. Like the second he’s sad it’s like he’s only ever been sad his whole life and the second he’s mad it’s the same thing. It’s just so fucking exhausting. And he will not communicate in any fucking way but he also just sits and ruminates and makes everything fucking worse because he will not make any attempt to problem solve or make the situation better or anything and the only way to get him to break the spiral is to make him think it out but when he shuts down he literally won’t talk or look at me and if I try to give him space he will just completely shut down and go lay in bed and not eat or work or move for literally days and sometimes weeks. And I can’t do anything! And also! I shouldn’t fucking have to! go to a fucking therapist god. but then he’s too anxious about phone calls and money and health insurance to go back to therapy and it just starts all over again and he completely shuts down. I don’t know what to do and it’s fucking pissingme off. Like I work full time, I go to school full time, I do all the cooking, I do all the laundry, all the grocery shopping/errands and then he like get mad and stressed and overwhelmed because the house is dirty but he also won’t clean and throws a fit whenever he has to because he’s got it in his head that I’m the one making the mess and resents cleaning up after me. Like yes I am the messier one but Jesus fucking Christ there are only so many hours in a fucking week dude. I spend, minimum, 40 hours working, and then another 34 hours doing the bare minimum for school (not even cause I just skip doing the readings and lectures and participation stuff cause I literally don’t have the time), and then at least another 28 hours cooking breakfast lunch and dinner for us (closer to 35). Like that leaves me 58 hours in which to sleep, eat, relax, shower, talk to my family & friends. I also spend 5 hours a week in therapy to try to be better, plus another hour on diary cards and homework! So 52 hours to myself a week? If you take sleep out, assuming 8 hours a night (if I’m lucky) I’m left with 18 fucking hours. 18 hours to myself a week in which to do laundry, plan meals, run errands, clean, bathe, eat, exercise, maintain relationships, relax. That’s like 2.5 hours per day.

He works full time, yeah, but he also literally plays Minecraft while sitting in pointless meetings, and the workload I take on in a day BY MYSELF is equal to what his 4 person team and manager do in 2 weeks. I’m just so pissed. Like no fucking wonder I don’t have patience for it. I’m expected to expend my meager amount of personal time on spending hours forcing you to open up and walking you step by step through your problems? He’s also so bad at like emotional support and stuff that it’s extra maddening. I just don’t even fucking know dude. I’m so sick of it.

Random Tails of Equestria Homebrew in Honour of the Series Finale

So ignore this post if you’re not into anything pony related. Basically, the show ended last week, and I was going to do one giant write-up on it but I had to stop because I was making myself cry. (No joke)  So instead, I decided to post a silly Tails of Equestria (yes, there’s an official tabletop RPG) homebrew I did a while ago. For context, I always found DnD 5e’s Wild Magic Surge table hilarious, and a lot of its results felt like things I could see happening on the FiM show. So, I retoolled it a bit, and I give you... THE CHAOS TABLE!  Feel free to use this any time Discord is involved, any time any creature besides Discord tries to control chaos magic, or if you somehow end up in his domain or anywhere heavily influenced by him.  Again, this is adapted from DnD 5e’s Wild Magic Sorcerer Wild Magic Surge table. Which can be found here: http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/sorcerer:wild-magic (This might require a bit of homebrewing to define exactly what constitutes a “turn” in ToE.) D100 Roll (roll two D10s, one for 10s, one for ones) - Result.  0-1: Roll on  the table at the start of every turn for the next minute.

3-4: For the  next minute, you can see any invisible creature as long as you have line of  sight to it.

5-6: A Pony  Golem (see Statuettes) appears within 5 feet of you and disappears 1 minute  later.

7-8: You use  Fire Breath D8 centred on yourself. 

9-10: You  use Stun Ray D10 on a random target.

11-12: Roll  a D10. Your height changes by a number of inches equal to the roll. Even =  taller, Odd = shorter.

13-14: You and  all creatures within 10 feet of you become extremely confused.

 15-16: For  the next minute, you regain 1 Stamina per turn.

17-18: You  grow a long beard made of feathers that remain until you sneeze, at which  point the feathers explode out of your face.

19-20: Slick  grease covers the ground in a 10-foot square around you. Anycreature who  enters the area must succeed on a Difficulty  4 Body Check or fall prone.

21-22:  Creatures must downgrade their die to resist the next Talent you use that  requires a resistance roll. 

23-24: Your  skin/coat turns a vibrant shade of blue. This change can only be removed by  magical means. For Changelings, the effect persists across any  transformation. 

25-26: An  eye appears on your forehead for the next minute. During that time, you  upgrade your Mind die for tests that rely on sight. But you downgrade your  Charm die when interacting with others, because dude that’s creepy.

27-28: For  the next minute, you can use two magical talents per turn. 

29-30: You  teleport to an unoccupied space of your choice you can see.

31-32: You  are transported to the Sock Puppet Dimension until the end of your next turn,  at which time you reappear where you once were, likely extremely traumatised.  

33-34: For  the next magical talent you use, you count as rolling the highest number on  its die. (Exploding Hoof does not apply)

35-36: Roll  a D10. Your age changes by a number of years equal to the roll. Odd = younger  (minimum 1 year old), Even = older. (Dragons and Alicorns aren’t affected)

37-38: 1d6  Flumphs (yes, they actually exist in Tails of Equestria) controlled by the GM appear in unoccupied spaces within 60 feet of  you and are frightened of you. They vanish within 1 minute. 

39-40: You  regain D10 Stamina.

41-42: You  turn into a potted plant until the start of your next turn. While a plant,  you are incapacitated and gain the quirk Weakness: Everything (D6). If you  drop to 0 Stamina, the pot breaks and your form reverts.

43-44: For  the next minute, you can teleport up to 20 feet once per turn. 

45-46: You  levitate for the next minute.

47-48: A  Unicorn controlled by the GM appears within 5 feet of you, then disappears 1  minute later (they go back to wherever they were before being “summoned”, and  think the whole experience was a dream). 

49-50: You  can’t speak for the next minute. Whenever you try, pink bubbles float out of  your mouth. 

51-52: A  spectral shield hovers near you for the next minute, giving you Thick Hide  (D4) and Magic Resistance (D6).

53-54: You  are immune to getting a sugar rush from sweets for the next D4 days.

55-56: Your  mane falls out but grows back within the next 24 hours. A wacky comedy  episode ensues. (Creatures without hair re-roll this result)

57-58: For  the next minute, any flammable object you touch that isn’t being worn or  carried by somecreature else bursts into flames. You just don’t know what  went wrong!

59-60: You  regain the use of one expended “once per session” talent.

61-62:  For the next minute, you must shout when  you speak. Hope there’s a shouting closet nearby! 

63-64: A  cloud of fog bursts out around you.

65-66: Up to  3 creatures you choose within 30 feet of you suffer the effects of Shock (D6)

67-68: You  are frightened by the nearest creature until the end of your turn. 

69-70: Each  creature within 30 feet of you becomes invisible for the next minute. The  invisibility ends on a creature if it attacks or casts a spell. 

71-72: You  gain Thick Hide (D10) for the next minute, except it also works on magic.

73-74: A  random creature within 60 feet of you becomes poisoned (as per Poison Spray)  for 1D4 hours. 

75-76: You  glow with a bright blue light in a 30 foot radius for the next minute. Any  creature that moves within 5 feet of you is blinded for one turn. 

77-78: You  must make a Mind Test (Difficulty 5). If failed, you turn into a Breezy for 1  hour. 

79-80:  Illusory butterflies and flower petals flutter in the air around you for the  next minute. After 10 seconds, the butterflies start yelling insults at you. 

81-82: You  take one additional action immediately.

83-84: Each  creature within 30 feet of you loses D4 Stamina. You regain Stamina equal to  the sum of the damage dealt.

85-86: You  clone yourself as-per Duplicate (D4). Fun!

87-88: You  cast a flight spell on a random target within 60 feet of you that lasts 1  hour. (If it targets a creature that can already fly, it loses its  flight for 1 hour!)

89-90: You  become invisible for the next minute. During that period, other creatures  can’t hear you. The invisibility ends when you attack or cast a spell.

91-92: You  gain the Rebirth (D6) talent for the next minute.

93-94: You  double in size for the next minute, upgrading your Body die. Dragons instead  suffer one level of Dragon Greed. 

95-96: You  and all creatures within 30 feet of you gain Weakness: [GM thinks up  something fitting or funny] (D6) for the next minute. 

97-98:  “Winter Wrap-Up” plays repeatedly in your head for the next minute. 

99-00: You  upgrade your die for any action you take for the next minute.

So I don’t want kids, like at all, however I’ve always said that if by some cruel twist of fate I do have a son I’m naming him Togna. But pronounced like bologna.

Yeah, I miss my SO. She’s away on a research trip and I’m not able to talk to her for about 10 more days. Shit sucks.

1. What do you think your d&d race would be?

Dwarf, probably. I’m short, chunky, and do have pervasive body hair. I actually have like two actual hairs growing out of my neck and some thick peachfuzz so I feel like my body wants a beard bad enough for me to be a dwarf.

I think maaaaybe a bard? I have a lot of anxiety concerning performing but I could be a stand up comedy bard. If not that, maybe a barbarian? I wanna go feral at all times.

3. What two feats would you have?

Inspiring Leader and Tavern Brawler. I am good at encouraging people and literally love the concept at going feral w/ whatever weapon possible.

4. What has been your favorite d&d character you’ve played? (NPCs count for DMs)

Ooooo! I guess my favorite PC I’ve played is Viper, my assassin tiefling. My favorite NPC I’ve played is probably Daniel Devito (original character do not steal)

5. Which of your d&d characters has been the most like you?

None of my characters are particularly like me, all of them have like, one trait I can relate to tops. Same with NPCs.

6. Which of your d&d characters has been the least like you?

For NPCs, the big bad of my last campaign (Duke Maloret) but for PCs probably Viper?

7. How do you go about making a character or NPC?

I go with a basic concept when making a player character and flesh it out from there once I have an idea what the setting is like. For an NPC, I already know what the setting is like so I create someone I think would fit and have a place and purpose in the setting. And when I make joke NPCs I just come up w/ something funny that somehow usually works with lore.

8. What is the most memorable natural 20 you’ve ever experienced?

In the CoS game I’m playing, our warlock got a fuckin nat 20 and one shot an NPC, who was definitely going to kill us, mortal combat style.

9. Has one of your d&d characters ever died? How?

In a oneshot playing w/ some ppl I don’t really care for, one of my characters died. They died bc a player threw a grenade to kill a big monster even though I said “yo, don’t!”

My health, update

Thought I’d do a quick post talking about it here. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis). It means if I do too much stuff in a day I will be fucked for quite a bit of the next week. Now, too much stuff can sometimes be standing for too long, or going to make food too often. I am then bed ridden with what feels like the flu. 2 Saturdays ago, I spent 5 hours outside the house doing shopping. I was pretty much bedridden for a full week. I could barely get out of bed, even for the bathroom. Thankfully the toilet is close to the room I am sleeping in, otherwise I would have been screwed. I managed to get out of the house on the monday for 2 hours but spent a full half an hour on the floor at the event. And the rest of the time I had to be sitting so I wouldn’t fall over.

I also have Fibromyalgia, but it’s pretty under control with the pain medication I am on. Ehlers-danlos syndrome is also a bitch to deal with, my shoulder lately has been dislocating a hell of a lot (and my collarbone) and my ribs sublax real easy (semi dislocate). It’s painful as hell. I’ve been suffering from migraines for the past year or so, and struggled a lot finding medication. My doc literally tried everything. We found two that sorta work, then he sent me to a specialist to get botox. Can say the botox has taken care of the tension headache in my shoulders, almost perfectly, and that is good enough for the $160 bucks it’s gonna cost every 3 months. I get migraines every 2 or so days and they last for 1-2. It sucks. They are so bad sometimes, that even in a dark room (one with security shutters) with sunglasses on, I can’t really look at my phone screen. Gotta say my night vision has gotten better :P I have also gotten POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) which is whats been making me spend a lot of time on the ground. It’s a shitty thing that makes you super dizzy and what not. It’s likely to happen in people who have a connective tissue disorder (eds) or chronic fatigue and a couple of other things. I have two of them and fml, just had to develop this too. Pretty much, normally when you stand, your blood rushes to your legs. Then your body tightens your veins and your heart pumps about 10-20 more bpm for a bit to get your blood where it should be. My veins do not do this. And so my heart literally pumps 40-50 extra bpm just from standing up. I end up so tired because my heart is pumping so hard. Even on days where I have done nothing other then getting up to use the bathroom and get food, my heart is in cardio mode for at least 1-2 hours. Even sitting up, my heart has to work so fucking hard. And if I am standing for too long, my heart gets a bit tired so whoops on the ground again. I’ve barely left the house in months and months. I go to two lgbt youth events a week (well, most of the time, I try to make one) which last 2 hours and are mostly sitting down. I haven’t made it to jugger in 6 months. I have been maybe twice in that time. The only things I deffo always leave the house for are the Raiders home games. Mostly because mum has paid for season tickets and I don’t want to miss them, and it’s mostly sitting down which is easier for me. I have only had a couple of fainting fits at the games, and for some reason it’s usually after the game has finished thank fuck. Socialising has been really hard. I have dnd every week at my house, but it obviously doesn’t always happen. I am lucky two people who come work (or worked with) disabled people and can sometimes help me to the toilet if I really need it, and aren’t weird about it. Many of my friends have stopped visiting me and what not because it really is hard being friends with someone who is disabled. And I totally get it. I usually don’t have the energy to reach out to people, so it is partially my fault. And everyone has their own lives. I get it completely. It’s my birthday in august, and that’s usually when I can see old friends hopefully. Some usually turn up which is amazing.  It’s fucking shit not being able to leave the house alone. If I have a presyncopy or something and someone calls an ambulance, I am fucked. It’s like 800-900 bucks. And also pretty much fainting is hard to recover from, and if it happens on a moving bus I am fucked also. I also don’t drive (for obvious reasons) so I can’t just get into a car and go visit people. That’s why I try so hard to go to the lgbt events. I am extremely extroverted, to the point if I don’t see people in a week, I have no energy. And if I’ve had a bad cfs week, I have no physical energy to go see people and it turns into a vicious cycle.

Anyhow, I hope everyone is doing well, and anyone who read this far is fucking amazing tbh.

In this thread I’ll be going through the exact steps I did to finish this challenge on time. I’ll be breaking it down into what I did on each day.

Day 1: Sunday

Came up with the idea (I was inspired by the DND Improv Show in the Winnipeg Fringe). I got a cast of improvisers together. Made prompts to inspire the actors. Ronnie and Bradley came by and did about 40 minutes of character development and then improvised their scene for the microphone. I enhanced the scene with music and effects afterward. I recorded everything into Reaper and with a Rode NT1-A. I sourced all my sound effects from YouTube and downloaded them through YouTube - mp3.

Day 2: Monday

Mark, Adam, Raegan, and Karanveer came to record their scenes. After about an hour of character development, they took to the mic in groups of 2 and I recorded. I edited their scenes afterward, adding in sound effects where appropriate and a beat when Adam and Mark start dancing. I have a lot of fun making sure the sound effects enhance the story by bringing it to life a little more. In editing, I noticed that Adam and Mark were heading towards their friend from college who’s been highly successful and Raegan and Karanveer were just caught by the King. It made sense that the King and the friend from college was the same person.

Day 3: Tuesday

With everyones first takes done I began thinking of a logical, dramatic way to tie up episode one. It seemed there had to be an Evil King character so I went towards casting it. I decided that I will play the Kings assistant then my girlfriend said she wanted to do a role later on so I let her do it (I played the guard and the kid waking up at the end). I wrote the script for the end of the episode. The script had 6 additional scenes and was about half of the total time of the episode. I contacted a graphic designer I quite like to make a sketch of an image for the series. He wanted 60$ per character so I decided on 1 character and he agreed to take his price down to 50 for a shout out in the video. I started scheduling people to record their last lines.

Day 4: Wednesday

As much as I’d like to keep the script improvised, I couldn’t get actors on the same day so with the written script I was able to record the remaining lines of 2 characters on this day. I wrapped Adam and Raegan. I produced Gnarbelarbezub’s rock and roll doorbell by using some guitar samples on top of the doorbell melody I made in Logic. I layered the Logic Melody with an electric guitar plug-in. I got a few samples of art from the graphic designer. We’re narrowing down the final product but overall impressed with this guys professionalism. His Instagram is @kumobleu. I still needed a king and a narrator so I asked Connor, my girlfriend's coworker and old improv teacher and Brooklyn, a host at the radio station I work at and they luckily both said yes. I was particularly happy to have Brooklyn on board because she was my main teacher at the radio station and I was proud to be able to say that I had a project with her.

Day 5: Thursday

By the end of this day, everyone’s audio files were in for me to start slicing together. I got this day off work so I could have actors in and out all day. I had Connor over at 1:30 to record all his lines, we recorded Audrey’s lines at this point too. With Audrey's help, we finished the script for the narration and sent it over to Brooklyn who sent me the recordings within 2 hours. Very impressive. I quickly recorded my guard lines. Mark, Ronnie, and Bradley came over at 6 to record their lines and Karanveer finished his lines up at 8. I had all the files that I needed so I got to work piecing the story together in Reaper. I had 9 scenes and ended up staying up til 5am to finish getting everything together.

Day 6: Friday

Woke up around 11 and started downloading my stems from the 9 scenes. My coworker, who produces a show at the station let me use his studio after work so at 4 I hopped in, uploaded my tracks and started mixing in Pro Tools. I didn’t mess too much with EQ because I’m not confident with my ear for that yet, basically, I just made sure the volumes were all good. I put a limiter on all the speaking tracks. It was difficult to get the improvised scenes good. The first 2 scenes took me 4 hours to get because the limiter was crushing it too much and I was getting lots of distortion when I’d listen back. I do like the improv scenes so in the future, I may try to give them on their own mic channels. That’s one way I’d like to see this project grow. The improv scenes are a little more natural-sounding than the others. During the scene where Slevin and Dorgy are communicating through the intercom, I had 2 beep channels, one was EQ’d so that it would only play the lows. The intercom voices were lowered and filtered as well to make them seem a little distant. I was mixing in the studio and finally finished at 1am. I got the art earlier in the day and am 100% happy. Listening to the podcast as a whole, with Brooklyn’s narration felt really great. I’m proud of myself.

Day 7: Saturday

I put all my vlog footage together and made a video in Final Cut Pro and at the last possible minute titled this project: How to Fail at Magic Without Really Trying, Episode 1: How to Love One’s Elf. There were a few different title options and I had a very hard time picking but this one was the most popular with the cast.

People had this idea in their head, reinforced by their “nerdy ass voice actors” line at the start of every episode, that the cast of critical role had their standard day jobs voice acting and directing, and they played dnd on their own time in the evenings just because they enjoyed it, and they happen to film it for us. That was true for the first couple dozen episodes, but it hasn’t been true for years. Critical role is their full time job now, and any other acting or directing work is side gigs to keep the industry from forgetting about them, and to maintain the illusion with their fanbase that they are, first and foremost, voice actors. Seeing these numbers drove home to people that that was an illusion, not the truth, and some people see it as deception and betrayal.

They also suddenly feel a whole lot less sympathy when the cast talks about burnout. Nearly every dnd player has felt the struggle of fitting in dnd around their work/school and their family life, and sympathized with the cast talking about how hard it is to keep making an episode a week for so long. Now, they realize that the cast isn’t having to fit the episodes in around their full time job, losing free time for it, making the one 4.5 hour episode a week is their full time job, along with the setup and management. It makes people feel like while they have to fit dnd into their free time around a 40 hr/wk job, these people only have to play a dnd session a week, doing 5-10 hours of work to collect a full paycheck, and they’re complaining about even doing that much, and true or not, that builds resentment.

Similarly, the revelation that this is not a side gig makes people less understanding about the ad volume. Having 10 minutes of straight ads/sponsorships 2x a show is a lot, but people were cool with it when they thought that that many ads were required to keep the show afloat. Now that it’s revealed that the show is making a huge amount of revenue, people feel like those ads and sponsorships weren’t necessary to keep things afloat, they were greedy.

Truly the most brain rot part of the Twitch leak is people being incredulous that:

A) Critical Role makes money

B) It costs money to run the show

Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to? - Well, I really enjoy the old “Sorry for the inconvenience, but there’s been a mix up with your reservations. The room you’ll be staying in only has one bed.” It’s an oldy, but a goody.

Share one of your strengths. - Oh lord. Ummm. I don’t really know. I guess… Maybe my attention to detail? I don’t know. I’ve never been good at picking out my strengths within myself. Oops.

Which fic has been the hardest to write? -  Well, there are four all for different reasons. Streetlights was difficult because it was such a different style for me. It was first person, present tense, from Levi’s perspective. It was a challenge. Revival was difficult because it was a fairy tale au. I’ve never written anything fairy tale because I’ve never had the knack or desire to, but there it is in all it’s DnD-esque glory. Chapter two of Every Last One because it was my first time writing smut. Ever. And finally, Coming Out and Finding Home is very difficult for me to write because it’s a very personal story for me.

Which fic has been the easiest to write? - Again, there are four all for different reasons. Constant. Probably one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. It was for the JeanKasa event a few weeks ago. Its short and simple, but packs a small punch to the feels. I’m Not Going Anywhere was the first fic I ever wrote to be posted on AO3. I wanted to put something up pretty quick, so I think I kinda rushed it a bit. It could use a little more time and effort… Balance was written for EruMike Week and I couldn’t’ve been happier with how it turned out. As soon as I saw the prompt I had the idea for it, so it was really easy to get down pretty quickly. Lastly, Forget Me Not. It was a simple idea that I stuck to my comfort zone to write. Much like Balance, once I saw the prompt I had the idea, and the rest is history. :)

Do you use any tools, like work sheets or outlines? -  Only if I’m having a lot of trouble getting my thoughts together, especially for my multi-chaptered works. I mostly just write one-shots that are pretty short, so most of the time I don’t need anything more than just the spellcheck on Google Docs. However, I did make character outlines for Revival. I made Dungeons and Dragons character sheets for everyone and I hope I never have to do that again. (I think I clocked in around 9 hours in one sitting doing that.)

Merfolk Massacre

This week, I’ll be sharing an encounter that can act as a stand-alone side quest or an ongoing mission, depending on how well it is received by your party or how inquisitive they are. The introductory encounter is appropriate for a 5th-level party; however, you can adjust it in either direction to fit your current group’s capabilities.

The initial inspiration for this was brought about by the combination of my campaign’s tempest cleric and pirate warlock, both of whom have close ties to the sea. The quest can be picked up in any point of interest with access to a large waterway; however, if you’re in the process of worldbuilding, feel welcome to use the city from my campaign’s world: the Lake District, a shopping district built on a wide mile-long bridge over top of the region’s largest lake, Loch Blióg, which flows into the Behir River.  (It’s important to note that the river opens into the ocean, but that is for a later point.)

Summary: the bodies of many of the lake’s freshwater merfolk near the Lake District have been found brutally mutilated and murdered by many of the fishermen and barge shipmen who travel the waterways between the Behir River and Loch Blióg. The party will need to do some investigating to discover the source of the massacres - a cloister of merrow. Extended interest in the reason behind these killings will lead into the greater story behind the introductory quest: the merrow are collecting components for their leaders, a coven of powerful and hideous sea hags, who want to transform into beautiful but even deadlier creatures...sirens.

Part I: Rumor Has It

There are a couple of different ways by which you can drop this quest into your party’s laps: if they are the type to immediately enter a town and ask for the hot gossip, that is obviously going to be your easiest and safest bet - allow bartenders, shopkeepers, and guards to be readily able to offer up this information upon request.  If your party isn’t the type to seek out side-quests on their own but perhaps could use a distraction while you scramble to assemble more pieces of your main story’s plot, then you could always leave small nuggets as they enter the POI: little things like:

As you enter [the city on the lake], you see something humanoid being dragged from the lake...squinting to get a closer look, you see that it appears to be of merfolk kind...

Entering the [temple], you hear an acolyte arguing with the high priest over whether or not it is important to provide a proper burial to “our aquatic neighbors.”

[The shady alchemist] looks around, making sure that no one else is watching you two, as they lean in to mention, “I have plenty of potions of Water Breathing downstairs if you’re interested...with all the merfolk turning up dead as of late, I’ve found a way to replicate the philter for a cheaper cost…”

Depending on the party’s ability to get information, any or all of these bits and pieces can be made available to them by way of your NPCs:

While none of the NPCs know WHAT the creatures are, those who do business near the water (fishermen, dockers, sailors) will be able to describe them as “larger, monstrous-looking versions of merfolk” - a decent Intelligence (Nature) check can allow a player to ascertain that the creatures are merrow.

There is a pod of freshwater merfolk who live in a cenote cavern on the far end of the lake; the merfolk are kindly towards land-dwellers and mostly keep to themselves.

Attacks seem to happen in the evening hours, as bodies are always found in the morning hours.

The mysterious creatures have been seen coming in and out of the canal’s lock system to attack their prey, but they always depart back towards the river after making a kill.

Part II: Planning an Attack

(Optional:) I’m a DM who rewards ingenuity, so I like to build in ways for my PCs to get stuff done without simply hacking and slashing their way through an encounter, should they be crafty enough to seek them out. This next bit introduces one of the ways by which they can try to ensnare the monstrosities: may I introduce to you the loch’s LOCK, a method used in canals to keep large water crafts from scraping along the bottom of a waterway by use of gates that empty or fill with water to lower or raise a boat. The basic mechanics of the lock (if you choose to add this as a method of entrapment in your encounter) are displayed visually HERE.

The top of the lock (the bollard) is brick-laid and lined in low decorative shrubs (good for quarter cover).

The lock canal is 50 feet deep and 50 feet wide:

The distance between the two gate locks in the canal is 60 feet.

The locks themselves are about 5 feet thick, 100 feet tall, and 50 feet long.

Running along the top of them would require a Dexterity check (DC 12) to keep from falling into the water.  Trying to stay balanced on them during their rise/fall would require another Dexterity check (DC 18) to keep from falling into the water.

Opening/closing the lock gates requires a Strength check (DC 10). No Strength check is needed to lift the ground (or "sluice") paddle that lets water flood into the space between the two gates.

It takes one person to close the front lock, one to lift the ground paddle to let the water fill up the lock, and two to open the double gate at the back lock.

If the group doesn’t catch onto this as an option for an ambush, don’t push it; but if they do, it should be markedly easier for them to capture and contain the creatures in case they want to question them and may even merit extra XP for creativity.

Part III: Encountering the Merrow

I ran this with a 5th-level party so that my warlock could purchase a spell book with the ritual spell Water Breathing since they opted to launch their attack in the water, but even a 3rd- or 4th-level party could handle a few merrow without risking a TPK. I used six merrow, which is rated a “hard” encounter per Kobold Fight Club.

If your party has put in the effort to utilize the lock, allow them to keep watch for the merrow (PC’s Perception versus the merrow’s Stealth). If your party opts to take the battle underwater like mine did, be prepared to research and run combat underwater (see Chapter 9 of the Player’s Handbook).  The six merrow will swim slowly and silently into the canal (which normally remains open at night) once it’s dark.

For being a Challenge Rating 2 creature, a merrow is a pretty cool monstrosity: it is classified as “large” and gets two attacks per turn (and one of them are ranged). To boot, their ranged attack - the harpoon - is able to pull a creature closer to them if they’re able to (a.) hit them with the attack and (b.) outroll a “huge” or smaller creature in a contested Strength check (a merrow has a whopping +4 Strength modifier...not half bad). Their AC is a mere 13, but they have what 99% of your PCs haven’t got: a swim speed of 40 feet. I’d recommend trying to focus on tethering any PC without a stellar Strength score since this will keep them from being able to escape if they fail their check against the merrow’s harpoon.

Once the encounter ends, the party can either loot the merrow or grill them for intel. It’s important to note that merrow cannot speak common (their canon languages are Aquan and Abyssal), so if your players want to question these creatures, someone is either going to need to know one of these languages or have a spell like Tongues prepared. If they are ready to loot the creatures, they’ll find satchels on each of the merrow containing a combined amount of:

16 freshwater pearls

4 lbs of merfolk scales

3 locks of merfolk hair

Additionally, you can opt to have a merperson act as a liaison for the colony if the party would like to speak with them: should they do so, allow the merfolk to offer a token of their gratitude based on the party’s level:

Candle of the Deep, a common item (levels 1-4)

Helm of Underwater Action, an uncommon item (levels 5-9)

Part IV: More Than Just a Side Quest

If the party chooses to follow this quest to completion, allow them to venture out into the rest of your world along the riverway, picking up various legends and lore from river and coastal dwellers about “a sea hag coven that terrorizes the waters of [one of your world’s oceans].”

Sea hags (CR 2), even in a coven (CR 4), are not all that powerful unless encountered at lower levels or with some additional help such as minions (like merrow, sahuagins, or sharks) or homebrewed lair effects (like undertows, kelp plants that ensnare, or random conjurations of tentacles as indicated in the 4th-level spell Black Tentacles).  Therefore, if you want to beef up this encounter for a higher-leveled party, consider keeping the sea hag’s Horrific Appearance and Death Glare abilities but using the stat block of a bheur hag (CR 7) for its AC, HP, and magic-casting features. Additionally, make time of the essence as the PCs battle the underwater witches and their minions since failure to defeat them swiftly will allow the coven time to complete their transformations into sirens. DnD Beyond’s Homebrew content has some really good ones, but my favorite was the CR 10 Classic Siren created by the user “ProbablyGood,” simply because (a.) they made the creature fey (which works with the sea hag origin in this context) and (b.) they gave the creature lots of appropriate spells for enticing and enchanting.

Depending on the level at which your party completes this quest, consider gifting them a massive treasure stash (perhaps stolen from sea merchants or pirates) as well as one of the following:

Bowl of Commanding Water Elementals, a rare item (levels 10-14)

Conch of Teleportation, a very rare item (levels 15-20, destination is set to a specific destination of your choice)
