imagine .... eddie dating a girl (you) who looks like she just got a time machine in from the 60’s … with your padded headbands that all have different patterns on them, your baby blues and baby pink eyeshadows dashed across your eyelids, always paired with black liner adorning the crease and a light blush dashed across your cheeks. your closet full of miniskirts of every colour, berets, babydoll/shift dresses, coloured tights, go-go boots and your quirky accessories.
your got strange looks from people now and again, especially people the same age as the both of you who couldn’t understand why your style and taste was so old, but you never let it get to you, which was one of the things eddie loved about you. with him being the ‘social outcast’ for being so different to everyone else around him, it was a nice comfort to have you, someone who didn’t exactly fit in either, but weren’t phased by the lingering looks and hushed whispers when you glided down the halls in your 60s attire. as long as you had eddie, who enjoyed your distinctive look, then you couldn’t care less what others thought or said about the way you looked.
you were always playing 60’s music when he was around, trying to get him give into the temptation of admitting okay, 60’s music isn’t all that bad. he’d usually go home with a catchy tune in his head now and again, not finding it in himself to be annoyed at you for it when you looked so excited to share your love for the music with him. you even made him a mixtape at one point with all your favourite songs on it; mama said, shout, act naturally, be my baby, respect etc.
you enjoyed talking to wayne about the 60’s (i assume he’s like mid 40s? maybe idk if his age has already been confirmed so forgive me if this is a mistake !!) so for him, the 60’s were his prime with him being in his twenties. you could listen to him go on and on about the atmosphere back then, how different times were, for both good and bad reasons. and wayne would never be one to hold back, loving to sit back and reminisce whilst you and eddie were curled up together listening intently.
your room was littered with posters of iconic women from the 60s. twiggy here, sharon tate there, aretha franklin by your vanity, and a framed, signed photograph of aubrey hepburn on your dresser that one of your relatives had managed to pick up for you, for your birthday. he would admire the collection sometimes, whilst you were downstairs getting the both of you something to eat or in the shower whilst he got comfortable in your bed. a very big contrast to the metal posters he had scattered his bedroom, but he could see why you looked up to these women so much, they were definitely badass in their own ways.
you sat him through many 60s movies, your absolute favourites being valley of the dolls and breakfast at tiffany’s. you always compromised though, promising if he sat through the whole movie with you, you would watch the latest horror that had just been released at family video, a deal he would never turn down. an extra hour or two with you cuddled up whilst you both stuffed your faces and shared kisses ??? he’d be a fool to turn that down.
he would never admit it, but your love of the 60s was rubbing off on him quite a bit. it took him awhile to understand it, not having a clue about that time when you first met, but with the months you had been together, you had taught him a lot, and slowly, there were parts he grew to love about it too. the music mostly, though they would never compare to his beloved rock bands he head banged to every night, but he stopped complaining when you reached over in his van and pushed in the mixtape you had made for him.
what he didn’t know, was that you already knew you had won him over. his lip syncing wasn’t as concealed as he thought he was.
-
just a little something to ease me back into writing for this fandom, i've been in such a 60s mood lately & this just came to mind ! i hope you all like it :)

Hello, neighbor
Hermione adored the flat, small and “historical” as it was in one of the oldest buildings of Diagon Alley, because it not only looked out onto her beloved Flourish and Blotts, but also because it afforded her close access to both sides of her muggle and magical worlds. The building’s magic revealed its age in occasional fits of energy where the showers gushed soap bubbles instead of water and the shared hallways sported wallpaper from bygone eras. Regardless of the unpredictability, she wouldn’t give up her place for anything in the world.
Until someone moved in next door.
Courtesy notices informed surrounding flats of the new lease and move-in dates. This in itself wouldn’t have been a problem since magic ensured ironclad noise cancellation. What was an issue was the owner’s obvious lack of awareness for available square footage.
Anyone normal would have magicked furniture straight into the flat, preferably exactly into their predetermined spots. There wouldn’t be any need for moving vans, blanketed lifts, and workers hauling in box after box. But this occupant obviously didn’t reconcile the available space with their belongings. The hallway outside of Hermione’s door was crammed full of crates, oak side tables, and authentic Tiffany lampshades. Items flowed out her neighbor’s open door all the way down the hall to the lift, and more continued to appear with little ‘pops’ wherever they could fit.
Today happened to coincide with the release date of Walter Hammervite’s third novel in his ThestralRising series, and Hermione had plans to pick up her reserved copy and spend the entire day reading. Unfortunately, the hall was crammed so full, she could barely squeeze out her door much less make her way to the lift. The only available path was one that required sliding over tables and under what looked to be brand new quidditch brooms towards her neighbor’s door.
This isn’t actually how she planned to introduce herself, but they left her very little choice, didn’t they?
Rifling around her pantry and extracting a dusty bottle of red wine from Godric knows how long ago, she decided to present her gift and kindly ask they clear the shared space as was only appropriate. Wielding the bottle like a wand, she ventured forth through the obstacle course until she arrived sore and slightly out of breath at the doorway.
“Excuse me? In anybody home?” With a bookshelf blocking most of the entrance, she resorted to knocking lightly on the door frame.
“I’ll be there in a moment!”
Was that…but no, it couldn’t be, could it? There’s no way he would live here of all places.
Hermione could hear scuffling and light thumps underneath the music that blared out into the hall just as rudely as the furniture.
“Merlin’s left bollock! This piece of shite shelf…just, can you squeeze through and give a hand?”
The familiar voice encouraged Hermione forward despite her misgivings, and she placed the bottle inside the shelf before pushing through the cramped space into the flat. As she popped into the small opening, she finally came face to face with the voice on the opposite side of the bookcase.
“Malfoy?”
With a complete lack of surprise at her identity, he nodded acknowledgement and waved a hand helplessly at his situation. “As much as I’d love to say ‘Hello, neighbor,’ I think we can both agree there’s a bigger issue on hand.”
“Yes, that being your complete arseheaded miscalculation of how much shit you have—”
“I’ll have you know these are priceless heirlooms, Granger—”
“—and this shit is blocking me from a book whose release I’ve been waiting months for!”
“Well, what would you have me do? I haven’t lived on my own since Hogwarts.”
“Oh, I don’t know, how about using magic like the wizard that you are, and handling this mess?”
He gaped at her momentarily before shaking his head in frustration. “I’m still on probation, Granger. I have another six months before they return my wand.”
Oh, bollocks.
They stood awkwardly in silence for a minute before she reached back into the case and surrendered her wine. “I meant to give this to you as a housewarming gift to welcome you to the building, but now I have a better idea.” Closing her eyes, she brought to memory the spells she needed before waved her wand in a tight pattern, shrinking everything in the hallway down to fist-sized versions of themselves. She continued rotating her wrist, sending it all into neat piles.
“That’s a neat trick, Granger, but how does that help me?” Malfoy raised an impressed eyebrow at her spellwork while simultaneously crossing his nicely muscled arms across his chest. Not that she noticed.
“Now, you give me a tour of your flat and we determine what you actually want to keep and what needs to be returned.”
“I thought you had a book to retrieve?”
“I do, but I also refuse to live a single minute more with an impassable hallway and you obviously require assistance.”
He scoffed at her statement. “You’re not the only witch I know. I could always ask Pansy or Blaise.”
Tilting her head at him, she waited a moment before calling his bluff.
“Alright, then. I’ll leave you to it. There better not be any more heirlooms blocking my doorway when I get back.” She turned to leave and was halfway to the lift before she heard her name.
“Granger!” He leaned out the door, nervously chewing on his lip and blonde hair mussed.
“What?” She didn’t fully turn around to face him, keeping the pressure on.
“How about you come over after you get your book?”
“…”
“I mean, I would like it if you came over and helped…I’m asking you to help me.”
“Why me?”
He stepped out fully into the hallway and faced her, hands now tucked into the back pockets of his slacks. “I’m trying to start over,” he admitted, “and I’ve wanted to apologize to you for a while now.”
Hermione likewise faced him and really, thoroughly looked him over. She should have noticed earlier, but he was wearing completely muggle clothingworn white sneakers, trousers and a button-up shirt not completely wrinkle-free. Most notable was his expression. She couldn’t recall seeing him so open before, not since early Hogwarts days when she’d see him laughing with his friends at the quidditch pitch before…well, before everything. Before Voldemort. Before “mudblood”. Before all the events that had robbed them of their childhood. He looked tired, but nearly free of all the weight of his upbringing. She might even dare say hopeful.
“Do you like to read?”
“Excuse me?”
“The book I’m getting is the third in the series. If you’re into fantasy, I can lend you the first book and we can talk about it later.”
His grey eyes widened slightly at her offer and he stood a little taller. “I do like reading, if you remember that bookshelf from earlier.”
She smirked at the reference. “I’ll be back in a bit, Malfoy. When I return you better have a detailed list of your belongings ordered by priority.”
“How am I supposed to remember everything I have when you shrank half of it?” He beckoned at the pile in the corner.
”If you can’t remember it, then it obviously isn’t important enough to keep, is it?” She spun back around without waiting for a reply and disappeared into the lift.
He laughed in agreement and looked back at his mess of an apartment. “Well, I guess that’s taken care of.” Waving his hand wandlessly, he summoned parchment and quill and at further gesturing an itemized list started writing itself. He turned to the bottle on the counter and corked it to let it breathe. “Next step, neighbors to friends.”

Does art make a difference?
Aw, sure. Of course there are degrees of extremity to the potential change that art can effect, depending on how many people are able to engage with it. The Beatles made a huge difference in the world. But Henry Darger, Jeff McKissack, Karen Dalton, Pauline Oliveros, Kenneth Patchen – there are so many folks who have made great art and not gotten massively famous for it, yet I think there are all sorts of ways their work informs and shapes other people’s work, and brains, and decisions.
Should politics and art mix?
Well, everything mixes, the New Statesman! That’s like asking if a knee-reflex hammer and a quadriceps tendon should “mix”.
Is your work for the many or for the few?
That’s for the many/few to say. I just crank out the hot jams.
If you were world leader, what would be your first law?
Gravity. I feel like we need to tighten up the constitutional protections that particular law enjoys. It’s a ticking time bomb, if you ask me.
Who would be your top advisers?
Cute angel on one shoulder, cute devil on the other.
What, if anything, would you censor?
Maybe we could all agree to not bust each other’s chops all cut-dang day.
If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?
Don’t know, banishment might be a little extreme, but I’d sure like to take that Stephen Hawking dude down a notch or two. Right? Are you with me?
What are the rules that you live by?
Basically, “bros before hos”. I feel like if you stay true to that, everything else just kind of falls into place.
Do you love your country?
I love William Faulkner, Dolly Parton, fried chicken, Van Dyke Parks, the Grand Canyon, Topanga Canyon, bacon cheeseburgers with horseradish, Georgia O’Keeffe, Grand Ole Opry, Gary Snyder, Gilda Radner, Radio City Music Hall, Big Sur, Ponderosa pines, Southern BBQ, Highway One, Kris Kristofferson, National Arts Club in New York, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Joni Mitchell, Ernest Hemingway, Harriet Tubman, Hearst Castle, Ansel Adams, Kenneth Jay Lane, Yuba River, South Yuba River Citizens League, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”, “Hired Hand”, “The Jerk”, “The Sting”, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, clambakes, lobster rolls, s’mores, camping in the Sierra Nevadas, land sailing in the Nevada desert, riding horseback in Canyon de Chelly; Walker Percy, Billie Holiday, Drag City, Chez Panisse/Alice Waters/slow food movement, David Crosby, Ralph Lauren,San Francisco Tape Music Center, Albert Brooks, Utah Phillips, Carol Moseley Braun, Bolinas CA, Ashland OR, Lawrence KS, Austin TX, Bainbridge Island WA, Marilyn Monroe, Mills College, Elizabeth Cotton, Carl Sandburg, the Orange Show in Houston, Toni Morrison, Texas Gladden, California College of Ayurvedic Medicine, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Saturday Night Live, Aaron Copland, Barack Obama, Oscar de la Renta, Alan Lomax, Joyce Carol Oates, Fred Neil, Henry Cowell, Barneys New York, Golden Gate Park, Musee Mechanique, Woody Guthrie, Maxfield Parrish, Malibu, Maui, Napa Valley, Terry Riley, drive-in movies, homemade blackberry ice cream from blackberries picked on my property, Lil Wayne, Walt Whitman, Halston, Lavender Ridge Grenache from Lodi CA, Tony Duquette, Julia Morgan, Lotta Crabtree, Empire Mine, North Columbia Schoolhouse, Disneyland, Nevada County Grandmothers for Peace; Roberta Flack, Randy Newman, Mark Helprin, Larry David, Prince; cooking on Thanksgiving; Shel Siverstein, Lee Hazlewood, Lee Radziwill, Jackie Onassis, E.B. White, William Carlos Williams, Jay Z, Ralph Stanley, Allen Ginsberg, Cesar Chavez, Harvey Milk, RFK, Rosa Parks, Arthur Miller, “The Simpsons”, Julia Child, Henry Miller, Arthur Ashe, Anne Bancroft, The Farm Midwifery Center in TN, Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Harry Nilsson, Woodstock, and some other stuff. Buuuut, the ol’ U S of A can pull some pretty dick moves. I’m hoping it’ll all come out in the wash...
Are we all doomed?
If we keep our expectations pretty low I think we might be fine. I mean, we’re definitely all dying at some point. There’s no getting around that. But between now and then, things might start looking up!
— Joanna Newsom for The New Statesman, 2008
#joanna newsom#isn't she simultaneously just the most hilarious and thoughtful person?#i love her so much#a few people have asked me for that one quote about loving her country but the whole interview is a real gem i hope y'all enjoy it#love joanna#jnew

The Malfoy Next Door
The Malfoy Next Door https://ift.tt/HYQmTOd by MarinaJune Anyone normal would have magicked furniture straight into the flat, preferably exactly into their predetermined spots. Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester, Michigan This grand mansion was the home of Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of carmaker John Dodge, and her second husband Alfred G. Wilson. It was built in 1926-1929 and designed by the firm Smith, Hinchman, and Grylls which also designed Detroit’s Guardian Building. Buhl Building, Ford Piquette Plant, and the Dodge Main Factory, among many others. The 110-room Tudor Revival mansion is the fourth-largest historic house museum in the United States and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Each of its 36 chimneys has a distinct design and stone carvings on the exterior featuring the Dodge and Wilson family crests and native woodland animals. The study has a carved oak frieze with scenes from the life of Alfred Wilson. There's also a secret staircase, gold-plated bathroom fixtures, an Aeolian organ, Tiffany glass, and paintings by Anthony van Dyck, Thomas Gainsborough, and John Constable. The grounds include a golf course, stables, and Knole Cottage, a fully functioning playhouse with a kitchen, dining room, living room, bathroom, nursery, and bedroom. Born to German immigrants, Matilda Rausch Dodge Wilson had a notable life in industry, agriculture, politics, and education, and was one of the wealthiest women in the world during her lifetime. She was John Dodge’s secretary before marrying him and acted as a manager in the Dodge Brothers’ company. After being widowed with three children and three stepchildren, she remarried lumber baron Alfred Wilson and adopted two more children. She oversaw livestock breeding of shorthorn cattle and Yorkshire hogs. In 1931, Dodge was appointed to the Michigan State Board of Agriculture and in 1940 became the 43rd Lieutenant Governor of Michigan—the first female Lieutenant Governor in the country. In 1957, the Wilsons gave the property and extensive grounds to found Oakland University. Since 1971, Meadow Brook Hall has been open as a museum, conference space, and cultural center. For many years the home hosted one of the largest car shows in the world. In more recent times, Antiques Roadshow was filmed here, as well as a number of music videos. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/meadow-brook-hall

Street Photography on 57th — Where Masters have Shot
Bill Cunningham’s favorite corner must have been 57th and 5th, not too far from where he lived in the back of Carnegie Hall. His classic “On the Street” New York Times visual column was (mostly) shot at the intersection of the Bergdorf Goodman, Van Cleef & Arpels and Tiffany’s New York flagship stores. When Joel Meyerwitzfilmed his Masterclass, he chose the same crossroads.
It is not hard to see why: wheel-heeled tourists (the Plaza, Peninsula, and St. Regis are just a few yards away) mix with a few rich locals (57th further to the west has become “billionaires row”) to enter and exit these palaces of shopping abundance. The sidewalks and streets are wide and the surrounding buildings are not too tall, providing for optimal light for long stretches of the day. In terms of dress, here are truly some of the best dressed you will find in town — whether to show off what they just bought or what they have in their closets.
So, I found myself at the same crossing during a few lovely fall afternoons to snap pics of passersby:
Whether in motion or standing, the Bergdorf corners provided perfect fodder for pictures.
The most surreal moment happened on a Friday afternoon, when a Trump impersonator started to direct traffic and captured the attention of both motorists and passers-by. What was all the more astonishing was just how much attention the man captured, even if — thankfully — he wasn’t the real thing, but just an imitator.
Earlier, I had taken two of my favorite pictures of these sessions: two women waiting for transportation — one for a bus, the other for a taxi:
As equipment, I took my trusty Fujifilm X-Pro 3 with a simple 23mm lens one afternoon and an X-T4 with a 35mm the other two times. The longer lens (a 35mm on a APS-C crop sensor works out to around 50mm) seems the better choice as I don’t like to get too close to people.
Two of my other favorites spots for New York street photography are a bit further downtown. But more on that in a future post. Also, coming up in future write-ups: taking pictures of people and them looking back at you as well as some thoughts on finding the right lens (and camera). Until then — happy 📸!

tiffany could feel her jaw ticking with each step , the muscles beneath the flushed skin of her face twitching as her gut tried to steer her back in the other direction — towards the parking lot , towards her bike , willing her to leave this abomination of a " racer " behind . . . yet , the blonde squeezed van's hand tighter , using the other to pull out her keycard that let her into the track after hours . perks of being the favorite .
" shut up , " she whispered , the words harsh and sharp , steering van through the various halls that lead to where the cars were kept . ceruleans dropped to where the glitch had squeezed her hand , painfully reminding the blonde it was grasping her own , before she swallowed the lump that rose in her throat . " if you tell anyone i did this , " the words are silky , slippery like oil , turning abruptly to face van so their chests were separated by a wisp of air . she paused , contemplating which threat to select from her arsenal , before she released the other's hand and turned away .
" — you won't have any hands to dream about racing with . "
moving to the wall , tiffany flicked a switch , the hum of a light buzzing to life as the bulb flickered before casting a warm , honeyed glow over the rows of well-kept cars. hers sat closest to the garage's door , and if one had a keen sense of smell , they'd notice the hint of burnt rubber and a cooling exhaust clinging to the drafty air . " grab a helmet , " she instructed , not looking back as she moved towards her locker , realizing only now that her whole body , each individual finger , was shaking .
vanellope didn't think she had ever seen tiffany like this. she had waited for the quick retort, the sharp tongue that she was so used to...and it just never came. vanellope honestly was more scared that she wasn't reacting her normal self. did she finally get through to the blonde? or was she just a sitting duck who was about to be devoured? the longer the silence had stayed the more she was starting to sweat. but she wasn't going to show her fear. tiffany may be terrifying, but she was a smart woman. vanellope was just hoping her words had an impact on her for once.
she felt her breath hitch the moment the blonde touched her hand, a foreign buzzing between their palms. vanellope would be lying to herself if she didn't say the gesture had her speechless, even dazed. a feeling she wasn't sure she could really let herself think about too long. for her own sake. at the instructions given she nodded her head, snapping herself out of her thoughts. "i am your shadow," she repeated. she had no idea what tiffany was about to do, but there was a bit of excitement that betrayed her facial expression. for once it felt like tiff was seeing things from her perspective....and if that was the case, then maybe she would be able to satisfy this itch she had when it came to racing. without actually racing, of course. "thank you..." she whispered, squeezing the girl's hand on instinct. "i know i don't deserve this...but it means more to me than you know..."
