Hello and happy Pride month! I loved reading and watching Good Omens, as well as a few of your other books (I particularly love the short story about the elderly woman and the holy grail). I'm wondering if any of your stories have openly LGBT+ characters, or maybe if you could recommend a novel you particularly enjoyed? As a lesbian it can be difficult to find fantasy/sci-fi stories with characters like you who don't end in tragedy. Thank you!

Well, Death: The Time of Your Life is probably the best of them. Or at least, it’s the one that I got the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book for.  You’ll like Hazel and Foxglove, I hope; although the impetus is that Foxglove is a closeted rock performer (based loosely on people I knew in the ‘90s) and I hope the culture has changed enough to push that into the past. (I’m not actually certain if it’s available on its own now, or only in The Death Deluxe Edition: https://amzn.to/31F3U6w)

There are LGBT+ characters all the way through Sandman, and you’ll also find queer and LGBT+ characters, most of whom have happy endings, in American Gods, Coraline, and Neverwhere. (Murder Mysteries, a short story and graphic novel,adapted by the amazing P. Craig Russell,  has some angelic lovemaking in it, although they are technically angels, not humans.)

MORE STUFF TO READ BECAUSE ITS NOT LIEK I’VE GOT A BACKLOG OF OVER 100 FICS I STILL NEED TO READ. ... eh. That’ll last me until October if I’m busy. So yeah. New fics!

Hi there! So I’m really new to this fandom and ship and I was wondering if you’d mind recommending me some of the classic/ must read fics? Thank you so much 💕💫

Since there are so many classic fics within the fandom. I’m gonna recommend five to get you started. Sorry for getting to this late and hopefully you haven’t read these but here we go. Here are some classic fanfics that everyone who loves has probably already read: 

1) Dirty Laundry | By: Anonymous | Completed | 85,042 words | Mature

“Two whole months of free laundry in exchange for two weeks of being my fake boyfriend. Deal?”

Keith hesitated for a moment. Was this really worth it? Hardly. Lance was an asshole, and he wasn’t sure what fake dating would entail. But, free laundry was free laundry, right?

“Alright, it’s a deal.”Or: Lance makes the mistake of telling his Mom he has a boyfriend coming home with him for Christmas. Keith makes the mistake of agreeing to be Lance’s ‘fake boyfriend’.

Notes:

 This is a must read. I think almost everyone in this fandom has read this fic at some point and honestly its worth the read.  Whenever you hear someone mention “Oh this reminds me of Dirty Laundry.” They’re talking about this fic. Its almost an unspoken requirement for people to read this honestly. 

2) The Marks We Make | By: Wittyy_name | Ongoing | 145,760 words | Mature

Lance McClain constantly dreams of the day he’ll finally meet his mysterious soulmate. They don’t say much, if anything at all, but they leave him with gorgeous paintings temporarily tattooing his skin. It’s not exactly the situation he hoped for, but when he feels the connection between them, he can’t bring himself to resent them. As much as he wishes his soulmate would just talk to him, he’s resigned himself to being patient. In the meantime, he has a loving family and good friends to help him get by.

Keith Kogane dreads the day he’ll finally meet his obnoxious soulmate. He’s just an art student who’s struggling to find his place in the world. There’s so much he hasn’t been able to control in his life, and the thought of having a soulmate, just another thing in his life which he also has no control over yet can’t do anything about, is a little terrifying. So he ignores the words that occasionally appear on his skin. He has other things to focus on: like being a new student at a big university where his childhood friend and step-brother go.

Notes: 

Honestly, almost everything that this author has made for this fandom has become popular. This one is just probably my favorite work of theirs. Once you read this definitely check out everything else Klance they’ve written and you wont regret it. 

3) What A Healing Pod Can’t Repair | By: Remember_Me | Completed | 55,777 words | Teen & Up Audiences

The compromised wormhole was ripping apart at the seams, sending everyone spiraling away in completely different directions. Lance could feel himself being pulled and bent in ways he was definitely not supposed to be.

Stitching the team back together after everyone is separated is difficult, and for one Paladin rescue wouldn’t be coming for a very long time.

Notes: 

So, this takes place after episode 11 of season 1 when everyone is kinda thrown around and let me tell you. You need to prepare yourself to read this. That’s all I shall say. 

4) of florists and tennis shoes | By: venpast | Completed | 63,783 words | Teen & Up Audiences 

‘Lance wasn’t sure if he’d imagined the brief tremble at the corner of Keith’s lips or not, that slight stutter that promised a smile. But before he could guess further, Keith gave his knee a shove and got to his feet. He reached out to him, “I’m done here, and I’ve still got some daisies to sell you.”“Yeah,” Lance agreed, looking down at the extended palm, noting the little Saturn tattoo on the inside of Keith’s wrist where the sleeve hiked. He took the hand, “better not overprice those too, you asshole.”’(in which lance is a broke university student trying to impress a pretty girl with flowers, but ends up falling for the florist that sells them instead.)

Notes:

 You know, I thought this was a pretty popular fic, but then I saw that it only had 104,000 hits. If you haven’t read this. What are you doing with your life. Its such a good fic and its one that I love so very much. So please read it.

5) Water Cast | By: Fishwrites | Ongoing | 130,494 words | Mature

Shiro has been a Galra prisoner for over a year; with his flight feathers clipped and unable to fly. Desperate to escape, he jumps overboard while being transported to the capitol on a Galran ship. Lance is a merman who saves him from drowning. Keith thinks Shiro is about to become mermaid dinner. Hunk just wants Lance to

stop going to the surface all the time, dammit!

(AU where Avians (winged folk), Galra, humans and merfolk cohabit earth. Shiro and Keith are avian soldiers, Lance is the youngest son of a Queen, Hunk is also a merman and Pidge is still looking for her family. They get caught up in a war.)

6) Follow My Lead | By: Klancekorner | Completed | 117,792 words | Mature

Becoming “hook-up buddies” with Lance Sanchez was just supposed to be a small, insignificant fraction of Keith’s life. But of course, things don’t work out that way at all.  aka a Friends w/ Benefits AU that nobody asked for where Lance wears sleeveless hoodies, plays basketball in abandoned parking lots, and follows his dreams, and Keith comes from a high class, reputable family who never let him have any dreams of his own. They go home with each other and don’t expect it to matter until it totally does.Keith POV and Lance POV

So, I know I said I would recommend five fics BUT, this is one that I think everyone in the fandom should read because its so good. Its well written and I love it so much, you should read this.

I really adore this. It works almost too well with these two.

Pretty much where ever they went the judging stares followed. He’d only been in close proximity with Luke for about a month but even so he’d already been branded a juvenile set out to corrupt children, do drugs, and steal from old ladies while they tried to cross the street.

While he couldn’t pin the whole thing on Luke (His own lanky skater-like appearance made it pretty hard to pin him as anything other than a trouble maker) most of the stares and whispers were certainly the blonde boys fault. Percy was pretty sure it was impossible for the guy to smile without looking like he was  about to pull some prank on half the city, his rather large face-scar didn’t make matters easier and his habit of pick-pocketing couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the distrusting glances either.

People’s judgment didn’t usually get to Percy, though. It gave him a chance to prove them wrong. He could make funny faces  at children in the subway while Luke could drop a gold watch at the feet of a beggar, and the moment any kind of father gave them the ‘Stay away from my daughter’ Look Luke would make a big deal of kissing Percy in front of him. It had become almost like a game to them, whatever people thought was true could be taken and ripped apart for the real truth to show through. He supposed he would just call it a simple pleasure of Luke’s company.

Luke paused, a hand tangled in his short damp hair, the warm summer air sticking to his exposed chest. He stepped out from the lake, eyes lit with confusion at the short demigod who’d turned up.

Percy stood there, shifting on his feet, hands behind his back. His eyes were wide, green irises distractingly bright. A pink tongue nervously wetted his lips. Luke tried not to stare too much.

“A lot.” A fierce red blush covered Percy’s cheeks with that addition. His gaze flickered downward for a moment, finding Luke’s khaki shorts sticking like a second skin to his sculpted legs, he quickly drew his eyes away, breathing just a little harder than before. Percy gulped and took the few steps forward that led him just a foot away from the senior counselor. “This is for you.”

Cocking his head to one side, Luke found an amused lilt lifting his lips. Clasped between the son of Poseidon’s shaking hands was a white carnation. He plucked out the flower with gentle fingers, smiling indulgently at the boy. “Thanks, Percy.”

Percy pocketed his hands, a shy little smile gracing his own lips. “I got them from Katie,  she says they’re special.”

“I think I’ve heard about that,” Luke mused, smelling the mild fragrance of the flora and gazing down at Percy from over the ruffled white petals. “Demeter’s kids growing unfading flowers and selling them or something…” He lowered the carnation as the thought struck him. “You bought this?”

A hint of white teeth peeked from Percy’s lips as he bit down on his lower lip, looking away sheepishly. “I just wanted to show you… I mean, I’m not really good with words, and…”

“And?” Luke prompted, something like awed confusion in his eyes as he watched Percy grew a little bit more flustered.

“Um…” Percy stared back up at Luke, drawing on some sort of inner strength. “Well, I thought I’d lost my mom before and I… I felt kind of bad because I don’t think I’ve never really shown her how much she meant to me. And I… I just… I realized I don’t want that to happen again. I’m not very good at expressing stuff but, well, I guess you ought to know, right? People should know how much I love them, before they’re taken away…”

It was difficult to explain the surge of heat that exploded inside Luke’s chest. The carnation in his hand felt heavy, the long stalk felt like a thin poison numbing the pads of his fingers. Somehow, he just knew what to do with it. “Come here,” he whispered lowly, free hand looping loosely around the small waist, warm palm settling over the orange cloth at the small of Percy’s back.

Luke’s shadow shielded him from the afternoon sun, and from this intimate distance Percy could smell morning dew, the training grounds, and a hint perspiration. The soft petals of the carnation brushed against his cheek. Percy couldn’t stop staring at how near Luke’s face had become, blue eyes a myriad of tints and shades framed by short blond eyelashes, they stared right into his very soul and Percy just about lost the ability to breathe.

“Well, then.” Luke’s voice was quiet as though he was disclosing a secret only for Percy to hear. “You should know that I like you, too, Percy; more than anyone else.”

The sound of a flatline was the only thing going through Percy’s mind as he felt his heart stop beating at Luke’s own confession. He blinked and the next thing he knew, Luke’s lips had claimed his. It was like drinking in nectar, giving him that heavy, sated feeling, liquid warmth trickling down to every cell in his body. His eyelids lowered half-way but Percy wouldn’t allow them to close, Luke was watching him and he didn’t want to stop looking back, either. A heated puff of air danced over his lips and Percy found Luke slowly pulling back, leaving a tingling sensation all over him.

“Sorry,” Luke said fingers traversing the slope of Percy’s cheek as he put some distance between them.

“It’s okay,” Percy breathed, still quite unable to believe that what just happened had indeed happened for real. “It’s…” He stopped, seeing Luke step back and finding the carnation gone from the older one’s grasp. His first thought was that Luke had dropped it but then he noticed the steadfast gaze of the other’s eyes on him; consequently, he registered the unbidden weight tucked neatly behind his left ear. If possible, Percy thought his whole face might’ve gone aflame.

Luke’s smile grew wide as he watched Percy reach his conclusion. “I’m really flattered by your gift,” he began, reaching out a hand and brushing the kid’s hair into order, making sure that the white flower stood out. “But I think it suits you more.”

“Thanks… I guess,” Percy blurted out, practically melting at the fond gaze directed at him.

“Anytime.” Luke winked, stealing another quick kiss. “Join me for a swim?”
