Here, again, my idea for Thyreosaurus. I had a lot of fun speculating about the appearance of this one. It has some crazy osteoderms that aren't like anything we see in stegosaur otherwise.
The big questions were: how were these positioned? Were they homologous to the plates? If not, did these replace them or did they have a complete different position and function?
One of the most interesting feature for me is that these plates seem to be concave, so they likely formed shallow depressions on the animal; a fun idea. Here my first impression sketch, just an hour after the paper came out.
The version I did on the stream differs slightly, with a more fluent transition from hip to tail plates. The partial skeletal reconstruction by @SlvrHwk_paleo (on Twitter) helped a lot.
I should say that this interpretation of the animal is totally subjective, it could be way more conventional or way weirder. I hope people continue to experiment with it and I hope more excavations will bring more of this material to light. Don't take my work as gospel.
Also: THIS IS NO APRILS'S FOOL JOKE

Impression of Thyreosaurus atlasicus, a recently-discovered stegosaur from the mid Jurassic of Morocco that is unusual among its kind for having rows of plates that lay flat against its body, rather than standing vertically as in other genera such as Dacentrurus, Stegosaurus and Tuojiangosaurus.

Thyreosaurus atlasicus Zafaty et al., 2024 (new genus and species)
(Armor plates of Thyreosaurus atlasicus [scale bars = 5 cm], from Zafaty et al., 2024)
Meaning of name: Thyreosaurus = shield lizard [in Greek]; atlasicus = from the Atlas Mountains
Age: Middle Jurassic (Bathonian–Callovian?)
Where found: El Mers III Formation, Fès-Meknès, Morocco
How much is known: Partial skeleton of one individual including several vertebrae, ribs, armor plates, and a limb bone.
Notes: Thyreosaurus was a stegosaur, possibly closely related to Adratiklit, which is also known from the Middle Jurassic of Morocco, and Dacentrurus from the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous of Europe. The type specimen is estimated to have been about 6 m long in total body length, but had not finished growing when it died.
The armor plates of Thyreosaurus were unusual in that they exhibit a cross-hatched texture on one side. In other armored dinosaurs, similar textures are generally found at the base of bony armor where it is embedded into their skin. The describers of Thyreosaurus thus suggest that these plates lay flat against its body, instead of standing vertically as is typical of back plates in other stegosaurs.
Reference: Zafaty, O., M. Oukassou, F. Riguetti, J. Company, S. Bendrioua, R. Tabuce, A. Charrière, and X. Pereda-Suberbiola. 2024. A new stegosaurian dinosaur (Ornithischia: Thyreophora) with a remarkable dermal armour from the Middle Jurassic of North Africa. Results from todays flocking paleostream
First we had Altispinax, which I had to speed run eating to finish this little baby
Then, to the dismay of some, we did thyreosaurus which was my idea, whith some curious Spicomellus approaching. Also I would like to clarify that I am not a lazy bastard as I suffered with everyone
Then I did a newborn ornithoprion with zebra shark colors
Then we did mapusaurus and here he is cuddling with argentinosaurus as they are tired of fighting

My take on Thyreosaurus

Note
There’s a recently discovered Stegosaur called Thyreosaurus, and it’s basically a Stegosaurus trying to cosplay as an Ankylosaur.
Upon research it looks like it was first discovered in 2021, but not formally described and named until 2024c this year.
The name thyreosaurus means “shield lizard” with “thyreos” being the name of a specific type of oblong shield in Ancient Greece. It’s named this way because of its unique armor, oblong plates that laid down flat across its back rather than sticking upright like other types of stegosaurus. This is similar to the dermal armor of nodosaurid ankylosaurs, which I assume is the cosplay you’re referring to, but other than the spinal plates it’s body shape is more-or-less the same as a standard stegosaurus.
It’s so cool to me that even after all this time we’re still discovering new dinosaurs and new things about the dinosaurs we already knew about.

Thireoqasa (Thyreosaurus atlasicus) – The Heck Stegosaur
The new species of stegosaur known as Thyreosaurus atlasicus in Late Jurassic from Morocco and rest of countries in North Africa. Also known as Thireoqasa by Moroccans, and as Tireukassu by Berber people, during The Recollections of Queen Arianna.
