I have a lot of like.... empathy for the frustration that disabled people feel who like, cannot work or had to take time off work and then have to deal with other people being like 'I wish I had x time off to do absolutely nothing.'
I do.
but there's just been some incredibly vitriolic hot takes that I've seen that jump frog from 'it's really annoying that people viewed it as just like... a vacation when I was healing from surgery/ a concussion/couldn't work due to xyz' to like 'OH SO YOU WISH YOU HAD *absolute worst moments of the disability*' instead of recognizing that like... some of the people who say those things.... are also in a lot of pain or incredibly burned out and really do sometimes weigh their odds of like 'if a car hit me, at least I could rest for a bit.'
and just...
imagine if I responded like that every time someone did the opposite to me.
You wish you could work? You're bored and frustrated because you could do some work but employers are assholes who often see people with disabilities as a liability?
I'm going to pretend that I don't see any potential reasonable version of what you've said and only address the imaginary version of what you've said that lives in my head.
OH, So you wish that you had to deal with the human rights violations that happen regularly in so many work places? OH? So you wish that it didn't matter how tired or how much pain you were in- you had to go into work anyway because the choice is dissociate or make your family homeless? You want to work for hours in so much pain that you're nauseuous but unable to process that you're even in pain anymore because if your brain let you feel it- you'd just fucking kill yourself? You want to work while literally seeing double, chest so painful that you're not certain that you *aren't* having a heart attack but unable to call out because there's no one coming if you do and your job involves being responsible for a human being who can't be responsible for themselves. So you simply can't be having a heart attack because that'd be dangerous for them.
.... oh that'd be a really shitty thing to assume of someone who is just voicing that they'd like to be able to have gainful employment/be less disabled?
man. I wonder what it's like for someone to assume the absolute worst version of what you said.
#sometimes I think about my father working the year before he died#and how he regularly passed out at work#standing up#so they got him a stool.#that was the answer.#it didn't stop him from losing consciousness#but it does make you less likely to damage something when you hit the ground#and like#this isn't just me being mad at made up people. I've had people tell me that I'm one of the lucky ones- being able to still work#Can't be in that much pain and still work a physical job 50 hours a week#more than 50 hours a week#and I think about the nurse who told me I couldn't have dislocated my knee and been walking on it#I'd have been in too much pain.#and how my patella was over 2 inches out of place.#I think of my dad still working overtime in the year before he died.#I think of him and the two sweet teas he drank a day and the biscuit he would try to choke down because he couldn't stomach food#I think of the phone call almost a decade prior. The one that changed everything.#'Where is your husband? Get him to the ER now- he's in multiple organ failure.'#and how he'd been working all weekend.#He went into a coma not long after. but he'd been *working*#through multiple organ failure#but yeah. I guess he was one of the 'lucky ones'. that definitely makes so much sense

I hate that I have to give this PSA at all- that I do is a failure on the part of multiple governmental organizations. But it is important.
COVID damages a lot more than you think. It damages more than your lungs, and does more than give you digestive issues. And sometimes, those issues can last well after you get better, even if you're not a person you would otherwise think of as being sick with long COVID.
If you only remember these two things, please just remember that:
COVID can and does damage your heart.
COVID can and does damage your nervous system, particularly your brain.
If you have had COVID in the last 18 months, you are at a highly elevated risk of sudden cardiac death compared to someone who hasn't. In the first three weeks after getting sick, your odds of dying from a heart-related event are 81 times that of an uninfected person, and five times higher in the following 18 months. You are also at a higher risk of of developing nonfatal heart disease; 40% likelier. (Source for all claims in this paragraph)
If you develop ANY cardiac symptoms at all after getting COVID- heart palpitations, blood pressure issues, fatigue, fainting, getting out of breath easier than is normal for you- you need to see a doctor as soon as possible, and you need to tell them you've recently had COVID. You have long COVID until proven otherwise.
Similarly, your risk of neurological disorders remains heightened over a year after getting COVID; approximately 40% higher. (Source) This manifests in more ways than I have time to list, but includes a vastly higher risk of dementia of all types (doctors are particularly seeing this with the under-45 group that was previously extremely rare), memory disorders, sensory issues (like persisting loss or distortion of taste and smell), mental health issues like anxiety or depression, and even more.
These can manifest in a lot of ways. But if you experience new anxiety or depression, new behavioral issues (particularly for those under the age of 18), if you suddenly can't focus anymore or can't remember things anymore (ESPECIALLY words, COVID has been noted to cause extreme difficulty with word recall), if you have tremors, if you're tired all the time, if you have "brain fog", if you have trouble sleeping, I could go on... again. You have long COVID until proven otherwise. EVEN IF you aren't "that sick". Even if you have energy to do things and can mostly function but you just aren't doing well in school/at work anymore because you can't remember the things your teacher/professor is talking about/the new work protocols your boss went over with you.
If you hop over to the subreddits for teachers or professors, you will notice a lot of them noting their students don't remember basic things the teachers have been pressing for an entire semester, or that students can't sit long enough to focus through a movie. And sure, some of that is cell phones reducing attention span, or students just not paying attention- but they just can't seem to pick up the pieces there that they are seeing long-term sequelae (that is, a different illness arising from COVID infection) in their students. It is everywhere, but few people are connecting the dots.
Similarly, there is a huge wave of pilots being unable to pass their physicals and losing their licenses, or making mistakes due to brain fog (in some cases even leading to crashes) or falling victim to sudden cardiac death in the middle of a flight.
EVERYONE is at risk from this. No one is talking about this. I don't kn- well, actually, no, I do know exactly why, I just don't like it. People want to make COVID the new flu, but it just isn't. It is not and never will be the flu. And we are willingly inflicting cardiomyopathy and dementia and all sorts of awful things on people in the name of regaining a sense of normalcy that is gone, but ironically would be closer to returning if we had accepted for a while that things WEREN'T normal and acted accordingly. But that chance is gone now, COVID is never going away because people couldn't bother, but they still can't admit it, they can't face the consequences of their actions, so instead we're getting this attempted coverup of the real long-terms dangers of COVID that even "young and healthy" people have.
But pretending things are normal doesn't make sick people healthy. So instead, try to educate folks, because there is a very high chance you or someone you know is sick right now, due to COVID infections they had months ago, and doesn't know it because people are pretending COVID is just the flu but with tummy upset and a disrupted sense of taste/smell.
People NEED to know what the actual dangers are.
ALSO, sidenote: if you are masking, and ask your medical team to mask, and they respond by starting to suggest you are experiencing "COVID anxiety", find a new provider. Immediately. Don't even continue the appointment. They are not interested in helping you.
Signed, your friendly neighborhood epidemiologist.

Hot Take Incoming The more I read about Neo/New Bundism, the more I'm convinced that it's an ideology that is based on a weird mix of Ashkenazic white guilt, "yearning for the shtetl", and identifying with Yiddish culture over Jewish culture because the former emphasizes secularism while the latter does not (which belies that fact that Judaism has multiple ways to engage with it and you don't need to be religious).
This last part is especially important to understand as in the West, Judaism is emphasized as one of the Big Three religions even though it's one of the smallest in the world. Many of us are taught that Judaism is just proto Xtianity or Islam, and depending on where you live and your community you absorb that. Especially if your family is non-practicing and there isn't much of a Jewish community and culture for you to interact with growing up. Many of our holidays, cultural norms, and so on are associated with Xtianity and framed in regards to a Cultural Xtian society. Hence why I think so many young secular Jews feel that they can't actually connect with Judaism because the narrative they have from Xtian society plus their disconnect from Jewish society means they perceive Judaism through the Xtian religious perspective.
If Cultural, religious, and lax Xtians are this way, then sure Judaism is as well since Xtianity is based on it, right?
That's the mindset I've seen over and over.
This is further exacerbated by the immigrant communities in the North Eastern USA (NY, PA, NJ) that had massive moments of cultural exchange and assimilation. Deli culture in the North East is a mix of Italian and Jewish cultures. Historically, Italian and Jewish communities allied and mixed in the early 20th to the point where it's a stereotype. And if you don't believe me then let me point to Harley Quinn in pop media, any of the organized crime families and the start of Las Vegas, or the fact that you can get a cheesesteak in a Jewish deli in PA.
So it makes sense that Bundism is having a revival of sorts into it's Neo era. It's a socialist ideology that emphasizes progressive ideals that man of us agree with. But Bundism also emphasized secular Judaism by putting Yiddish culture at the forefront. It was a way to be Jewish without being religious, and if you have any hang ups on religious practice then it makes sense as to why this ideology might be attractive. However, there is a failure to acknowledge that the largest Bund, and successor populations/groups, had to give a pound of flesh repeatedly to "prove" that they were loyal because of the old dual loyalty antisemitic conspiracy. And that was never enough as these groups were wiped out after their governments were done with them.
(Note: some of the most ardent anti-communist Jews were ex-Soviet citizens who managed to escape and witnessed all of this firsthand)
Neo/New Bundism comes across, especially since Oct 7th, as an aggressive "yearning for the shtetl" that rehashes the compromises the Old Bund was willing to give the USSR regarding its Judaism by embracing and emphasizing Yiddish culture instead.
For example; look at all the literature and examples regarding JVP. They had the seder plate incident back in the Spring, have had literature that told Jews not to pray and/or speak in Hebrew but in English or Arabic, and have rabbis that denigrate and dismiss Jewish culture and history (as well as so many other incidents and issues). All they need to do is tell Jews that they should actually be secular socialists and speak Yiddish instead and you'd have one of the cornerstones of Bundism.
It didn't work during the early to mid 20th century, and it won't work now.
But nostalgia is a helluva thing.
And so it comes across as this highly aggressive rejection of Israel and everything it stands for, whether true or falsely attributed to it, because it's not about the Jewish connection to Israel but the Jewish connection to a more immediate loss: Yiddish culture, which was decimated and destroyed in the 20th century. This is especially true when talking to Ashkenazic Neo Bundists as their family histories, like mine, start and stop with the Shoah.
Consider that the Bund were one of the largest Jewish organizations in the Pale, the resulting Yiddish community in said region were the largest in the world, and they organized and fought the Nazis, then it makes sense as to why the loss would be so poignant for many and grabbing ahold of the ideology to create a connection makes sense. I know for me that if I were to dive into everything Yiddish I would develop a greater appreciation for my family and where I come from even with the loss of knowledge caused by the Shoah.
If you further consider that it's a secular ideology that puts socialism first, then Yiddish, and then Judaism last, then it makes sense as to why you see so many anti-Zionists emphasize the "Israel killed Yiddish" talking point (which I haven't seen in months, but I remember it being a thing up until the Spring). The ideology does not emphasize identifying with Judaism and Israel, but with Yiddish culture and institutions.
There's nothing wrong with this per se, but it isolates an aspect of the Jewish community and says "you're different from the rest of them" while at the same time emphasizing that they should assimilate into the rest of the world. And let's be honest, because it is a European based ideology it was emphasizing assimilation into Western civilizations of European descent.
It therefore makes sense as to why Neo Bundists don't identify with Israel and/or refuse to identify with it. They identify with the European aspect of their history and not with the Middle Eastern. The European connection is immediate and direct, the Middle Eastern is distant and cultural. I understand this position as its Biological Altruism theory in practice, but it does fail to take in the larger "ecological" community that is being Jewish.
Part of the ideology and its adherents also blame Israel for not reviving or reconstituting the Yiddish community and culture, which is ironic because that would be focusing on a very European subculture of Judaism (and anti-Israel activists continuously yell that the country is a White European Colony). Ironically, this "Israel killed Yiddish" point either fails to take into account or lies through omission that the Nazis and USSR killed the largest Yiddish cultural centers and populations in the 20th century and that Yiddish culture in the USA has faded away over time as more and more ethnicities and cultures have assimilated and torn down their metaphorical, and sometimes very real, isolationist walls.
Unfortunately Neo Bundism focuses on the pre-WWII aspects of Bundism. I've personally talked to a bunch of Neo Bundists, and witnessed/read on social media their writings and interactions, and in each instance they emphasize that Bundism has been around since before WWII, was a widely supported ideology, and it stood opposed to Israel and Zionism.
Except they rarely talk about Bundism post WWII. After WWII and with the establishment of Israel it dropped the opposition position. Israel became an extant country and opposition to its existence didn't make sense anymore. It dropped the anti-Zionism, but still emphasized doikayt. It emphasized that Israel should adhere to the progressive Bundist ideologies of economic, social, racial, and political equality and equity. Hell, there was even an Israeli Bundist organization.
Hence why the last extant Old Bundist organization in the world, Melbourne's Jewish Labour Bund, has an issue with New/Neo Bundism. The Melborune JLB is the last existing Old Bund group in the world with all others have closed down in prior years or decades. MJLB acknowledges the October 7th attack by Hamas and the violence imposed on Palestinians by Israel. It acknowledges suffering on both sides. New/Neo Bundist organizations rarely, if ever, do this and instead commit to a Holocaust Universalization like position regarding Gaza while omitting the terrorist attacks.
Furthermore, the Neo/New Bundist organizations do not discuss the issues that define Bundist ideology, such as economic and social issues, but instead emphasizes the anti-Zionist position. This reduces it to a one trick pony that misses the point entirely (paraphrasing Dr. Ringelbaum who is President of JLB here). The focus on pre-WWII Bundist ideology echoes the sentiments of Bundist groups that did not want to change their ideals and positions afterwards, which led to them becoming defunct. The Neo/New movement is repeating the same mistakes that led to the dissolution of the movement at large and resulted in the ideology being relegated to the wings with no real voice.
It is also important to note that the majority of the Neo/New Bundist movement is under 30, with a lot of them being undergrad age. As someone who teaches this age bracket I will say that they're passionate but overconfident. They're informed but also ignorant. They're sympathetic and empathetic, but easily misled. I was too at that age.
And like any movement, Neo/New Bundism is going to have its growing pains. I think if it is to continue past this conflict and does not fizzle out then the movement and associated organizations need to reflect on what they actually mean outside of anti-Zionism. Because as of right now and for the past few years of its inception, and the brand new groups, that is all they've been. That's not fighting for labor, social, racial, political, and economic rights. That's repeating the same mistakes as the Bund in the early 20th century did. It's cutting off your nose to spite your face.
At this point in time myself and others don't trust Neo/New Bundists because why would we? The movement has shown that it's anti-Israel positioning is more important to them than anything else. This means they ally, like the Old Bund did, with antisemites who want to harm all of us. The movement just happens to give them permission to be extremely and violent antisemitic by using "as an anti-Zionist Jew" as a permissible framework. Just like the Old Bund did pre-WWII.
You're not doing anything new or innovative or helping the diaspora. You're following in the footsteps that led to more deaths of our people.
Please re-examine where you stand and what you stand for. It's been done before and we need to learn from history. Not repeat it.

🍵 It shocked Mikey enough that you still loved him even though he wasn't the same happy-go-lucky boy he was years ago, instead, he grew into a emotionless and dead-appearing individual
🍵 So, when he heard that you were pregnant, he'd be lying if he said he didn't feel a small bit of love grow inside his now cold-heart
🍵 Mikey was very good when it came to caring for you during your pregnancy, he would have the others go get you things you needed, since he suspected someone was after him and you
🍵 After all, being pregnant slows down a woman from whooping ass
🍵 It was surprising, but, when you went into labor and you were yelling at him as he tried calming you down, Mikey stayed as calm as ever
🍵 He would slightly flinch at the loud screams of pain you let out, and he was honestly kinda scared he may lose you when the gang's doctor rushed you to lay down and stay calm
" Mr. Sano, sir, would you like to hold your baby? "
🍵 Looking behind him, he stared at his first child, a son, and he felt a shimmer of happiness and sadness rush through him at the same time, it reminded him of when he first met Emma, how he cared for her automatically without any reason
🍵 As he held your baby, he let a tear rush down his cheek as you chuckled at his small moment of vulnerability, something he swore he would never show was in-fact showing, he was still human inside
🍵 Now, while your son grew up, Mikey was a hint of a helicopter-father, he runs a very dangerous organization, one that is being hunted by authorities constantly, and he had enough to do when worrying about you, but, his son was so similar to younger him
🍵 The boy would run up to strangers and make them laugh without a care in the world as Mikey would hide himself deeper in a hoodie while you got your son back to you guys
🍵 But, despite many beliefs, he's a decent father
🍵 Mikey would put some things behind and would play with his son, for example, if his son wanted to mess around with some sock puppets and make a story, Mikey would indulge him and mess with him, making his voice deepen and rise for his son's laugh to erupt
🍵 He does have his faults though, as his work can end up making his son mature faster than a child should, or he could end up saying or doing something that upset you, making his son start disconnecting with him
🍵 Overall, he's a 7.5/10 father, he's good in certain situations and bad in others

🔪 Sanzu and you have known one another for years, planting the first time you ever met nearly 10 years prior to this one
🔪 When he went through the years of torturous addictions, whether it be to alcohol or drugs that he somehow got a hold of through means even you didn't know of, you were always there to pull him away
🔪 Because of those issues, he had no idea why you settled for him of all people, you were so beautiful, you could've gotten with any other member of Bonten, maybe even his own boss
🔪 But, you settled with him, the guy who had nearly overdosed from his drugs and alcohol multiple times
🔪 While pushing those hateful thoughts of himself to the back of his brain, Sanzu had gone through multiple attempts of rehabilitation, and after a few failures and your threat of leaving him, he began taking it seriously, he loves you and he needs you to be there
🔪 It took a while, but, once he made it to your first milestone of a year of sobriety, you gave him a reward, which led to something bigger than expected
🔪 You had gotten pregnant, leaving Sanzu is shock, and his brain nearly, nearly, slipped away to him grabbing a large bottle of whiskey and wine mixed with a large bag of his old drugs
🔪 In the midst of his panic-attack, it took Kakucho's words of affirmation with his boss' assurance of him getting a form of paternity leave to just calm him down
🔪 He takes excellent care of you during your pregnancy, and that carried onto him as a father, to a degree, that is
🔪 When you went into labor, he was panicking badly, he had nearly passed out when you began to scream in pain, and during this mass of chaos, the doctor had to usher Ran and Rindou to take him out of the room
🔪 Hearing your screams of agony stop made his heart sink, what happened? Were you okay? How was his baby? Oh God, what if he lost you and the baby?! How would he live with himself?!
" Mr. Haruchiyo, your wife and daughter are in perfect condition. Would you like to come and see them? " " Yes! I- I mean, yes, please. "
🔪 When he held your daughter for the first time, he swore on his life he would protect you guys from everything, including himself. And, that day, he swore to stay sober for good. No fuck ups this time, he couldn't, no, he wouldn't risk harming his child and his own wife
🔪 Ever since your daughter was born, the rest of Bonten began to hide their deals from your home more often, by orders of Mikey, since, he knew how a traumatizing childhood can affect someone
🔪 Sanzu loves to play with her, for example, at just a few months old until she was around maybe seven years old, he would pick her up and toss her in the air for him to catch
🔪 Unlike Mikey, Sanzu doesn't really fear anyone harming his child, if they were a boy that is, he has a full-fledged belief that boys are far more feared than women, so, whenever his daughter starts talking to a stranger, he glares from behind her to make sure that random guy didn't even attempt touching her
🔪 He definitely tries holding back his tears during her first day of school, or really during any massive part of her life, especially when she graduated and moved out, his baby was so old now... he's getting back pain!
" Dad... I'm just moving across the street in another apartment, don't worry! I'll come see you and Mom whenever I can! Please don't cry! " " I'm not crying about that! Your Mother swat a fly earlier, I feel bad for the fly! "

❤️🔥 This guy is the definition of husband and father material, that I cannot deny
❤️🔥 When you guys started dating, he always had the idea of your future, from marriage to having children, whenever he would come home from a fight all injured, he would ask you if this was what you really wanted
❤️🔥 Did you really want to be with him? For crying out loud, he could get possibly killed at any time! This especially set in when you guys lost Izana (I believe that still happens... correct me if I'm wrong!)
❤️🔥 It still shocks him to this day on the fact you married him, he worked for Bonten, a gang very well known for their heinous actions, all members, including Kakucho himself, have done horrible things, how could you look him in the eye, nonetheless propose having children?
❤️🔥 You really surprise him at every turn, don't you?
❤️🔥 He smiled and gave you the thumbs up. Thankfully, it didn't take very long for you to find out you were pregnant, and as your stomach grew, he read many books on parenthood, he couldn't risk his child having a childhood as rough as he did
❤️🔥 When you went into labor, he was scared out of his mind, all of a sudden the floor was wet and you were heaving over in pain, leaving him to carry you bridal-style as he ran to Bonten's doctor
" I think they're in labor, Doctor! " " Girls! Get her in the delivery room, stat! "
❤️🔥 Hearing you scream in pain made him flinch as Kokonoi and Takeomi tried keeping him from busting down the door to comfort you
❤️🔥 Once the doctor came outside of the room and asked for him to come inside, he burst past the man dressed in scrubs and hugged you as you laid on the bed with a blanket in your arms
❤️🔥 You hushed him and held up your baby girl's head, and when your husband laid eyes on his daughter, he began to tear up, he really started crying was when she gripped his finger with her tiny fist
❤️🔥 You guys really made this? How surprising is this, huh?
❤️🔥 As your son grew up, Kakucho adores messing with her hair, he always had his in a buzz-cut as he grew older, so, whenever she asked for him to braid her hair when she was small, he obliged and gave her such a cute hairstyle!
❤️🔥 Kakucho obligates his family in first place alongside his work, though, since he was one of the top four people in Bonten, he got quite busy, but, he always tries pushing it all away as best as he could
❤️🔥 Thankfully, Mikey was more lenient with that since he knew of Kakucho's family-oriented life
❤️🔥 He is definitely one of the best fathers in the Tokyo Revengers Universe, he wants his child to grow up in a world where they feel wanted, and that roots deep with his own childhood
❤️🔥 This guy is also very protective, he's lost so many people, his best friend, Izana, for example
❤️🔥 Anyone tries harming his daughter, there will be hell to pay.

💰 Kokonoi, much like Kakucho, is still surprised that you wanted to be with him, but, he's also surprised that he was still with you... he believed that after the loss of Akane that he would never love again
💰 Thankfully, when you came into his life during the earlier years of Bonten to help with some issues with relations between gangs, Kokonoi began to bond with you
💰 When he asked you to marry him after a few months of dating and a couple weeks of courting, he remembers exactly how you smiled when you confirmed you wanted the same as him
💰 Kokonoi has enough resources to care for his family, so, when you proposed having children, he wasn't very worried about expenses, this guy knows so many ways of making money that even the richest people in the world would be baffled
💰 He was very excited when you found out you were having a baby, nonetheless when it was found out to be twins
💰 During your early months of pregnancy, he would grab everything for female babies and male babies, since the gender was hard to tell until your fifth month
💰 This guy was on cloud nine when notified you were both genders
💰 Now he doesn't have to worry about Mikey being mad that he bought so much male and female items for these babies
💰 Anyways, when you eventually went into labor, Kokonoi was as calm as a butterfly on the outside, while on the inside he was like a swarm of angry geese, thoughts flying faster than the snitch in Harry Potter
💰 He stayed in the room with you, allowing you to squeeze his hand, despite the immense pain you were bringing to his hands, he probably was getting bruises from your hold
💰 When the sounds of your first baby's cries entered his ears, he swore he forgot all about the pain in his hands, but, when his daughter came out just a few minutes later, his heart swooned
💰 If you've seen Friends, you might be familiar when Frank Jr. ran out to the gang and was yelling about his first child's birth, oh yeah, he definitely does that
" Yes! We have the first one down! I cannot believe I have a son... oh God! I have a Hajime Jr.! " " Has your wife even agreed to that name, Kokonoi? " " Nope! "
💰 Kokonoi held his son, whom you had to turn down his ideas of naming him Hajime Jr., and you held your daughter, and you had to turn down him naming her Sanzu-ia, he loves pissing Sanzu off too much...
💰 As your babies grew up, Kokonoi spoiled them beyond belief, and you had to hold him back from doing something stupid, like buying a TV show because his little baby girl wanted to meet a character she loved
💰 While the two grew up, he, much like Sanzu, cries at mass events for them, but, unlike Sanzu, he doesn't try holding himself back from showing his emotions to his children, prompting their embarrassment and you laughing at their antics
" Dad... please stop crying, God you're so embarrassing me... " " I can't! My babies are growing up so fast! Can you believe that just eighteen years ago you're mother was pushing you out of her- " " DAD! "

“it’s hypocrisy for people who celebrated the idf killing sinwar & nasrallah to be appalled by people celebrating luigi mangione killing brian thompson; either you care about sanctity of life no matter what or you’re okay with celebrating killing terrible people”
as someone who isn’t really celebrating either, but is more worried about the latter than the former, I would like to present another option.
there is a fundamental difference between:
killing a member of a military structure as an act of war VS. extrajudicial vigilantism and murder against another citizen
a terrorist organization that exists to destroy a country & slaughter its civilians directly carrying out a massacre with clearcut genocidal intentions VS. a healthcare company that exists to both provide coverage for care to its customers and profit to its shareholders making decisions that indirectly lead to death through a failure to provide care when they prioritize profit over care
an agreed upon military action by official members of a structure that has (ostensibly, or at least is supposed to have) a means of oversight/accountability VS. one rogue person serving as judge, jury & executioner with no oversight or accountability
a military attack that deals a significant & strategic blow to a structure that exists to cause harm VS. a lone act of violence that leaves the injustice structure intact and at most disrupts the means to provide healthcare coverage within that system
on multiple levels, the situations are different. this isn’t saying there isn’t severe injustice in how healthcare coverage is provided, or that Brian Thompson was in no way responsible for his part in it, but there are shades of bad, and in every aspect, they’re multiple steps removed in ways that severely change the dynamics.
yeah, if you squint your eyes until all details blur away and boil everything down to “bad person gets bad thing” they start to look the same, but that is a fundamentally unhelpful & childish way to look at the world.
should powerful people who make unjust decisions & have a larger share in the diffuse responsibility for terrible injustices receive no consequences just because they’re not directly masterminding it, or it’s an indirect consequence of other goals, or “it’s not personal; it’s just good business”? no, of course not. but there is good reason that we as a society have a concept of criminal negligence, and we recognize the difference between manslaughter versus murder. they’re just fundamentally different things.
no, intention isn’t everything, but it isn’t nothing. passively allowing violence isn’t not violent, but it is still categorically different from actively engaging in violence or directly commanding it. indirect responsibility isn’t no responsibility, but it isn’t the same as direct responsibility.
it can absolutely be helpful to build a fence around certain offenses—“don’t do x because it’s adjacent/can lead to y”—to make it less likely that the worse offense will occur or to keep people from abusing gray areas and claiming plausible deniability. but there is a limit to how far you can take that before it starts to do the opposite.
when we keep expanding the criteria of guilt to include more and more steps away from direct, intentional harm as equal to the direct/intentional version of that offense, and we lower the criteria for who metes out justice to just any guy with a gun, and we put the power of judge jury & executioner all in a single person’s hands and we allow the maximum sentence (execution) for even indirect/unintentional systemic harm… we’re creating a powder keg just waiting to explode into mass, unchecked, open violence and throwing matches at it. and that’s not even getting into all the people chomping at the bit just waiting to use this permission structure to attack Jews and queer people
I don’t know when we, the three opinions people, started embracing this dualistic extreme black-and-white thinking where things had to all always be x or y way, but we need to do better. cheering on the expansion of vigilantism into extrajudicial execution for untried alleged criminal negligence & corporate manslaughter is a significantly different beast to crab raving or dancing in the streets when a guy who directly masterminded massacres, ruled a totalitarian regime, or dedicated his life to final solution 2: electric boogaloo gets hit as part of a war.

I think I wanna talk a little bit about my near death experience. I’ve spent all week meditating on it, actually. Processing it. Doing regression therapy on myself essentially. It still makes me cry to recount, but now only because I feel like I saw… something.
I was hospitalized in March of 2020 with multiple organ failure, Covid, and C. Diff (and hey! I was one of the first people in the whole county to get Covid!!). I was an alcoholic and my drinking put me there… in that hospital.
They put me immediately in the SICU because they thought they were going to have to transport me to Detroit to remove a necrotic part of my pancreas.
But something happened. That first night, I spiked a fever of 105 degrees. I was obviously going through DTs (… delirium tremens) and just fever brained out of it… but I remember the nurse. She was a family friend. My parents both worked at that hospital. She laughed and said "oh I bet that feels nice" as she was putting ice bags on me and… I don’t know if it was the sun rising through the curtains but I think it was way before sunrise... there was a white, warm light behind her. She was on the opposite side of the room from the door so it wasn't that. And the light just kept getting brighter and I felt so comfortable and finally, FINALLY, warm.
And I just got the feeling I wasn't supposed to be there. I wasn't supposed to see that. The light. And everything went dark again and that was it, until I woke up the next morning. Like an immense feeling of peace and then feeling it being taken away from me.
It really shakes me up thinking about it because it's really hard to process what exactly I saw... if anything. I mean I don't know what to believe because like. I was going through DTs and feverish but that moment felt so clear.

Nuclear
Simon “Ghost” Riley x Reader
Triggers: Non-canon, cursing/strong language.

Context of Soulmate AU: link
Oh fuck.
Really it all happened so fast. Him running to the chaos, civilians away from it.
The blast was relatively small in comparison to what it should’ve been. The bomb destroyed one building, the same one used as a lab; a parking garage, abandoned at that, but, it was still enough to cause panic to surrounding locals and tourists. It’s been like this for months. Small bombs, terrorist projects popping up around the world.
The 141 has been spread thin chasing the “experiments” down, but it’s been hard. It’s not just one organization; it’s multiple groups. Simon’s never been particularly good at science, and the height of his math skills is calculating the trajectory for a well placed bullet; but even he could see the appeal behind the mad scientist who sold a hypothesis on the dark web which kickstarted this shite.
“Polarized electrons and nuclei? (Hypothetical) Evolution of The Human Race and Advancement of Nature.”
That’s what Laswell read during the brief eight months ago. “They want to basically fry atoms in the air with nuclear radiation, and kickstart survival of the fittest to see what’ll happen.”
“So, mad scientists?” Price summed up with annoyance. Thumb drumming on the table as he leaned back in his chair.
“The hypothetical seems… Enlightenin’, ay?” Scottish brouge mocks. Voice grating as gum pops.
“Easy, Johnny.” Masked weight shifted in his chair, arms crossed; eyes glowered at the screen through balaclava. “We handle this like we handle the rest, aye?”
“Not exactly… It’s experimental right now.” Laswell gestures to the screen, click of the remote in hand; slide show flickering to the next page. Deleted and encrypted forums from illegal sites. “Intel managed to decode a majority, but compounds in the equations got scrubbed by the site’s moderator. We’ve got about half the equation on the board for bow, and it’s not pretty from what the Snoops gathered.” She glares at the formula on screen. “Basically, from what I was told, they charged the bombs with electricity by polarizing the nuclei before they split them. Kinda like forcing two magnets together until they shatter. Fortunately, because the shards after the explosion try to rotate and magnetize, we won’t see an explosion like world war two but it’s still pretty destructive.”
“Well, that’s assuring. Jus’ us against a clock then, no?” Gaz’s knee bounces; steady tap of heel dulls against the tile as his boot makes contact.
They found out later that the bombs were worse in other ways. The radiation had a larger area of effect; it started off with small reactions in people. Feelings of numbness in bodies, higher electrical conductivity that killed people with pacemakers and other assortments of medical devices… The bombs got more advanced with each “failure”; got more deadly… Then the narrative changed.
“Re: ‘Nuclear charged electrons and nuclei. Evolution of The Human Race and Advancement of Nature.’ What if we used 2 positive polars instead of 2 negative polars?”
Intel managed to scrub the site for the location of the new bomb, even though they didn’t get a time, it was still enough to deploy.
For some reason, his luck always seems to run out in the most inopportune moments; and his skin feels like it’s on fire as electricity chases up his veins… Shit.
They got there as the bomb had gone off. Landed not even 40 minutes prior, they’re lucky in all honesty that they didn’t make it into the garage; but that doesn’t stop the air that feels like bricks slamming through their chests, the impact after getting knocked off foot isn’t a new feeling… But the charged air is.
Thick, heavy, suffocating; it reminds him of Mexico, being buried alive- that’s not the jarring part… The electricity is; a dense charged fog that clouds around their feet in a dusty orange. A static shock with every ragged breath, every movement subtle or not. Slow electrocution, that’s what it feels like.
“Johnny?” Simon manages up to his knees, head tilted to glaze the Scotsman still laid out. He breathes despite the pain when the brunette groans, rolling onto his back.
“Aye, gona’ need ‘a pint aft’ this’, LT.” Soap mutters; breathing shallow and labored.
Price got the worst of it, always in lead. Gaz kneeling over him. “Broken, Cap’?”
“Not,” a huff, “yet, Sergeant.” He slowly sits up with help of the younger man.
“Never simple, ‘init?” Simon rumbles reaching his feet finally, head on a swivel; rumble, car alarms matching the ringing in his ears, civilians laid out. Some screaming, some silent; the consistency? Horror and shock, pain and fear. He huffs. “Orders, John?”
Deep breaths sound from the Captain as he catches air; trying to fuel his body past pain as he stands. Knee twisted no doubt by his limp, hand raising to his chest where his calloused hands grasp his radio. “Bravo Six to Watcher, do you copy? Over.”
“Watcher to Bravo Six, copy. Over.”
“Got a situation down ‘ere, Watcher. Timing was all off, bomb detonated. Over.”
A brief pause that Simon recognizes, no doubt Laswell cursing off comms.
“Copy, change objective. Aid and retreat. Clear site; sending EVAC. Over.”
“Copy. Over and out.” John nods. They have their orders; they organize and move.
It’s methodical. Swift. Local government doesn’t take long to send in guard and emergency personnel; code victims, organize, and aid.
Physical contact proves to be some disaster though after a few minutes of evacuation.
A shrill scream paired with a baritone cry; both dropping to ground where lightning seemingly struck between bodies… Then again, two men. Next an elderly couple who made it out alive on the sidewalk.
Blue. Purple. Gold. The light doesn’t discriminate, nor the order of choice to strike. It’s seemingly at random. Smell of burnt flesh, and angry scars…
“Bloody hell!” Price’s voice rings, dragging a body by vest away from a woman. Gaz, the first of the team to drop, out cold, but alive.
“Steamin’ Jesus!” Johnny, the closer of the two rushes to aid, med kit already out and open as his knees make contact with concrete. Torch in gloved hand checking the colored man’s eyes for dilation.
It’s enough to put pause on rescue. Everyone freezing in place as eight people almost simultaneously collapsed at first attempts to help.
Dark eyes scavenge for answer. The man and woman, the two men, the couple, gaz- gloves. Bare skin.
“Nobody touch anyone.” Simon’s voice carries. “It’s contact. Flesh.”
Orders, and people follow. EMS extra attentive; local forces grabbing gloves from pockets, police officers grabbing rubber gloves from kit.
Simon looks at his own gloves; the knuckles scuffed and tore from the blast when he landed in the street. Protective plating torn from the thick leather. Thank God for gear.
He has orders, his gaze lifts to John. A shared nod as they both move once Garrick coughs and wakes. Disoriented but fine otherwise by what MacTavish can tell. They have a job to do, no matter the circumstances.
Simon works alone, pulling people from rubble before handing them off to a medic/firefighter/cop on standby.
It was an accident when his grip slipped; his eyes meeting bleary pained ones, and Shit. He understands, eyes locked with yours as your hand wrapped around his in attempt not to fall back down, fingertips brushing against his bare knuckles.
Fireworks? No. Thunderstruck. That’s what the jolt feels like when electricity chases up his arm. Contact arcing like lava as the skin whelps instantly to scar. Like a knock to the jaw, stunning function of brain.
Yeah, he gets what that lightning means.
It means when he wakes up, he ain’t lettin’ you go, luv.

What’s this season’s theme? They weren’t subtle about it. When the group asks her about Dohla, Allura almost literally turns to the camera and says: “Let’s just say being in dangerous situations with someone you’re close to can lead to friction.”
The show’s CRew drew considerable attention to this idea through Kima and Allura’s old friend, flashbacks to their adventuring days, Zerxus’ telling of the fall of Avalir, Scanlan’s failure to be fully present for either his daughter or Vox Machina, and the group splintering. On paper, this idea is fine, but in practice, its implementation is flawed.
Because what comes of all this setup? Scanlan steps away for Kaylie; what are the repercussions of that? While Keyleth and the twins break off from the rest, are they gone long? Does this season have a capstone with a potency similar to Bard’s Lament?
(For the record, I am neutral on having Bard’s Lament in Season 3, but excluding that eliminates one hefty bit of dramatic payoff. )
What’s interesting in hindsight is the unintentional, surprisingly substantial, and consistent theme that emerges. One that isn’t the Breaking of the Fellowship.
The twins exact their revenge on Thordak. Keyleth gets revenge on Raishan after Raishan gets hers on first the Ashari, then Thordak when he doesn’t provide her with her cure. Last season, Kaylie sought revenge but rejected it in the end, and now the Shorthalts are uncertain of where they stand. Percy wants to abandon vengeance, but Ripley forces his hand. After her fatal confrontation with Percy, the twins avenge him.
Noticing a pattern?
The script tells us this season’s heart is internal strife, but the action repeatedly shows us a revenge tale. With a strong through-line, marked thematic consistency, and multiple clear payoffs. Ironically, these elements develop organically, akin to mushrooms in the dark, shielded from the narrative heavy-handedness the spotlight would impose upon them.
With only a few tweaks, they could’ve had this plot laced up tighter than a 19th-century corset. Let the twins learn the identity of their mother’s murderer earlier, and let them get the last strikes on him. Give us the group HDYWTDT on Ripley. Let the anger Keyleth feels at Raishan initially block her from passing her earth trial—setting her up as a parallel to Percy; they both let go and walk out of this season alive—and you’ve cooked a full-course meal.
Instead of a retread, frame this story as an extension and escalation of the Briarwood arc—which established how self-destructive the old eye-for-an-eye can be—but this time for the villains: Thordak must be thwarted, and Ripley’s and Raishan’s respective revenge quests draw Vox Machina’s ire and ensure their downfall.
Because sometimes, one person’s vengeance is another person’s karma.
And if desired, you could build upon this idea even further in future seasons when the enemies waiting in the wings move to center stage. Some of them might be interested in payback.
The fact this secondary focus emerges so well and so naturally proves that this show's material is good enough that it doesn’t need bells and whistles or excessive exposition to establish and justify itself. Less-to-no spoon-feeding, keeping and bolstering what was great about the source material, and leaning into this revenge theme would’ve given us not just a much sounder narrative thread this season but a subtler and uncontrived one. And it wouldn’t have needed any extra time. It might’ve needed less if Ripley wasn't around as long.
This season didn't need an underdeveloped central theme that couldn't hold together for lack of payoff shoe-horned into it. It's a worse version of a problem season 2 had, where the idea of VM learning to not run from their problems made little sense in context and didn't really go anywhere for anyone except Scanlan.
All in all, it might be better to prioritize capturing what was great about the source material before adding to the story. Otherwise, you run the risk of throwing something in the stew that clashes with its other ingredients, and there'll be significant potential and several opportunities that could end up going to waste.

Inquisitor Women in Star Wars: a 2024 Summary
while women are underrepresented in the Sith order, the Inquisitorius is quite an egalitarian organization :) let's sum up what we know about these lovely ladies
(spoilers for everything concerning inquisitor characters, including the manner of their death)
2. Second Sister aka Trilla Suduri
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b8578e98e345ca248bfb5617bc7ada87/77ee06559007efbc-ea/s540x810/2ddbad843c9534282852f94e06675cfb8ccb00a2.webp)
Padawan to Cere Junda at the time of Order 66
captured and tortured into joining the Inquisitorius shortly after
dies 5 years later, executed by Vader for her perceived failure
human; age unknown, I'd estimate late teens to mid-twenties at the time of recruitment
created for Jedi: Fallen Order (2019), appeared before the game's release as a cameo in Darth Vader 2017 issue 19 (2018) and as a main character in the game tie-in miniseries Dark Temple. mentioned in Rise of the Red Blade (2023).
ambitious, relentless, a good slicer. wears a full helmet all the time when on the job.
3. Third Sister aka Reva Sevander
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e3a0864680473d82ce2a745cb6521986/77ee06559007efbc-96/s540x810/08a3995003ef98f6f3a0913a203e1b722dba5417.jpg)
12-year-old human youngling at the time of Order 66
joined the organization voluntarily and while hiding her identity, at an unspecified point a relatively short time before 10 years post-Order 66
left the Inquisitorius 10 years after Order 66, after failing to kill Darth Vader and being left to die
created for Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022). not in RotRB, likely due to not yet being a member during the book's timeline. does not appear and isn't mentioned in other canon material, outside of OWK's comic adaptation.
spent 10 years single-mindedly pursuing her goal of revenge. very intense and ambitious. youngest recruit we know of and the only one to have at least a quasi-canon number duplicate (the Third Brother).
4. Fourth Sister aka Lyn Rakish
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b3fe85e7565664865c574f4bfebdb225/77ee06559007efbc-ab/s540x810/260fbd192017a58702275fa09cb3de6feb4a5db6.jpg)
joined the Inquisitorius around the time of Order 66, apparently of her own free will
species, age and rank at that point unknown, may have been a peer of Barriss or somewhat older
left the Inquisitorius after serving it for over 15 years (actual time unknown but less than 20 years)
created for Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), part of the main cast in Tales of the Empire (2024), mentioned in RotRB (2023).
dedicated to the organization, pragmatic and better at cooperation than most colleagues.
7. Seventh Sister
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/140296399be8361a3d8d79bad6085eea/77ee06559007efbc-f4/s540x810/93d88f781278428f71dc21d342c7cf0dfa3cef1f.jpg)
joined the Inquisitorius shortly after Order 66, and appears to have been tortured into it

Hi besties, back at it again unfortunately.
My mom has been dealing with health complications out of the ass since the start of last year, and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure late July. Even with her pacemaker put in, her heart doesn't pump correctly and this has taken a severe toll on her health. This isn't even mentioning the complications with her recent hysterectomy and the multiple instances of medical neglect that left her in the hospital day after day for shit that should've been caught day one.
Needless to say, after pretty much dragging herself through 2024, she's made the decision to quit work and move back in with her father in Alabama, whilst also attempting to get on disability. This wasn't an easy decision, and fundraising to try and get moving costs and the last weeks of rent before she moves squared away has been a nightmare between my oldest sister and our aunt spreading slanderous shit about her to anyone'll that listen. She's a disabled older woman who is, to my knowledge at least, still the primary caretaker of my disabled sister until our dad gets off his ass and takes her in.
So I am once again sharing one of my mom's gof*ndme's.
Literally anything helps, I would help myself but given the fact that I live multiple states away and am disabled and unemployed myself, there's little I can aside from offer her advice and support.

part 0.4. THE SUN IS BAD
"sun just won't rise up for us tonight / and i'm sorry, i'm sorry i got angry when you got sad / i'm sorry, i'm sorry / i cannot take it back."
mori had known about the guild from the start. the organization had arrived a day before the trade fakeout yesterday after multiple failures on akutagawa’s part to obtain the agency’s weretiger they had originally paid the mafia to capture. it was to be expected that such a result would then lead to their attempt to blow her up a day ago, but they’d made a fatal mistake of coming to japan in the flesh, where the port mafia’s reach extended past that of just one subordinate.
mori explained this to her, saying he'd sent her with earnest as insurance to face some of their members for the first time when she came knocking on his door, seemingly also predicting her visit as well.
“i sent you two because i knew you’d be smart enough to survive, [y/n]-chan,” mori explained, offering her a red velvet chair across from the one he lounged in, facing the window of his office.
“i apologize, sir. i wasn’t mad, i figured as much. i’m just… worried,” she spoke quietly, taking a seat.
“about the boy? he’s certainly planning something irrational,” mori commented, seeming unaffected by his own statement, leaving her feeling worse. when they’d talked, earnest had said he understood her warning, but she knew better than most that no amount of resistance could stop one from doing the things they wanted to.
“[y/n]-chan.” she looked up at the man next her, “if he goes, do not try to stop him. such a spirit will not be stopped. do not take responsibility for his absence and what comes as a result of it. right now his actions can simply be explained as his own anger taking control of him but you know that i've taught you better. do not let what you feel rule out what is rational.”
she bit her lip in frustration. he knew her too well, but he was right. “yes, boss.”
“i need you to do something for me,” he folded his hands, placing them in his lap.
“anything,” she said.
“i have a feeling there’s going to be a big outbreak soon,” mori said, looking to her with a smile. he always talked in that passive voice, as if all he said was merely a suggestion when both of them knew what he spoke were facts. when dazai–who had the same exact habit–had still been around, it’d always been something funny she’d observed; had one’s speech patterns rubbed off on the other or were they just that similar? “i want you to cross-check a few things for me, scope out a few locations beforehand that one of our informants found. if you run into the guild while you’re out, all the better. extract what you can from them but don't kill anyone just yet. is that clear?”
“yes, sir. i understand. thank you, boss,” she stood, bowing before taking her leave.
mori knew her well enough, perhaps the best, due to how far they went back. he knew how she reacted, what set her off, and most importantly, what to do in those situations. she didn’t even have to say anything before he already knew she was worried about earnest. he knew that despite what he'd taught her, sometimes her emotions were still a little strong, which is why he'd given her something to do–a distraction–in order to take her mind off of them. his commands were unbiased and beneficial for the long term; more rational than what she may have done if she’d been on her own. as always, his orders came before anything else. she could trust them.
traveling had never been difficult for her. she was nimble and quick on her feet, and her ability allowed her to use her shadow to to travel from one place to the next. rather than face the busy streets of yokohama, it was easier to move across the ground and through the shadows cast by buildings and wandering civilians.
her job hadn’t been anything too difficult; examining warehouses to make sure they’d be empty at dusk, looking at the timetables of a train going out to shirakawa and buying a ticket for a few days from now, and lastly, visiting a park where it was predicted a guild member would show up. she’d learned years ago not to question what she was told to do. while it perked her curiosity that mori had given her the address of warehouses not owned by the mafia to check out, but she was sure she’d learn soon enough what his plan regarding the buildings was. the mafia informants were top notch, and she’d rather simply appreciate the work they’d done to make her job easy rather than question their means of obtaining said details.
the park was small and clean, overlooking a view of the ocean sparkling in the light of the sun. there were patches of grass, decorated with trees and benches that those around her passed by with varying amounts of urgency. men and women wearing business suits had shoes that clacked as they sped through the crowds, maneuvering and pushing past couples that held hands, wandering aimlessly and stopping ever so often to look out at the sea. amongst the variety of lives she was around, she spotted who she was looking for.
he was an old man with white hair who still stood quite tall although he used a cane to walk. he ambled along with the crowd at a slightly slower pace than the rest, but the sight made her hesitate. what would an older guild member even be doing out in broad daylight, simply walking through a crowd? the mafia didn’t yet have enough information on the various abilities of the members, last time she’d checked her messages. it appeared their computers were having trouble hacking into american systems which they suspected was likely due to their leader paying others hefty amounts of hush money to keep the organization a secret.
but no matter how strong the old man could possibly be, what was he doing walking alone in broad daylight?
looking for her, most likely.
or, the roles were switched. and he was walking around because he knew she was looking for him. that seemed more likely to her, judging by his senseless meandering. he had to be a decoy, she decided, and began to rake over her surroundings again, peering up at tall buildings and observing the people walking closest to her along with those sitting on benches far away.
the guild had already tried to attack her once, who was to say they wouldn’t again? if they could manage it, she was a good target to attack. taking down an executive would give them an upper hand over the mafia, and she commended them. the guild certainly had a tactful mastermind.
most benches were empty nearby her, and it would be difficult to try to attack her from farther away with all the people around her. while it was possible that someone may be tailing her from behind, mixed in with the crowd, it would be smartest and most effective to attack from above where they could easily spot her from higher ground.
they had to be on top or inside a nearby building, then. her three options were to sink back into the shadows and remerge somewhere else they weren’t expecting and search for her assailant then, look up at the buildings past the trees blocking her vision without making it too obvious, or to keep following the member in front of her and wait for them to strike.
in her mind, the last option made the most sense. either she’d get close enough to the old man to make her own move before she was attacked or the guild would act before then and reveal their location. either was fine with her, she could handle herself.
that point was made clear when she finally walked through an opening in trees, which for a few yards had been quite dense with one tree lined up right after the other. the clearing gave her a good view of nearby buildings, which also went the other way. this would be their chance to strike; sights on her wouldn't get any better than right now.
she leaned ever so slightly to the side, nearly missing a bullet that grazed her face.
perhaps it was a cheap trick that would have worked on a lower member who would have still been in the process of figuring out the guild’s plan or solely focused on training the man in front of her, but she hadn’t been trained to be an executive only to fall to a single bullet.
now, they had fallen into her trap. the bullet passed right by her and sunk into the soft soil to her left as she blended into the shadows.
“i can’t pinpoint her coordinates–”
the voice sounded like that of a kid’s as she arose from the darkness again, now on top of a building. it seemed to be a floating plush of some sort which a man with orange hair turned to as he spoke,
“what do you mean, tom? she was just there–” he cried out when her foot came down on his wrist that had been keeping his rifle steady. the gun in question had already been cut in half with the blade in her hand coated in shadows before it shifted, the sharp point of the weapon now pointed at the man’s throat instead.
was this the best the guild could do? did they not think of how vulenrable they were? the man below her lay on his stomach, not covered or hidden by anything but the small ledge of the building he’d just tried to shoot her from. it had been a pathetic attempt, really, especially considering he was now caught in her grasp, unable to move due to his vulnerable position.
he looked up at her with wide eyes, unable to get up not only because of the foot on his wrist, but because she'd used his own shadow from the neck down to paralyze him. she leaned closer to his face, eyes cold and merciless when she twisted the heel of her foot, grinding into his hand further. she spoke over his yelp, giving him no time to recover, “before I knock you out, i think i’ll have you tell me what you know.”
too late.
that’s all he had said.
there had been so many red herrings in this game of wits, things were bound to be uncovered, such as their information he’d just leaked to her, but not without something being taken in return.
she didn’t even know where she was running. she was searching everywhere. anywhere.
then she sensed death.
when you kill for so long, it begins to become predictable; there is a certain stench, and weight that prefaces it and lingers afterwards. right now, she could feel it coming from a secluded alley nearby that she immediately made her way towards. slowing down her pace. whoever had died, it was clear she had missed the fight.
worse, she felt positive she knew who had died.
a circle of mafiosos had already found the body when she entered the alleyway, standing a few feet away from the corpse in a semicircle.
he was on the ground. dark green eyes she would recognize anywhere still wide in shock. he lay in a pool of his own blood, his face turned towards her and resting on the ground.
her face was blank and her eyes were dry. even if she had found the body alone in this alleyway, it’s not as if she would have fallen to her knees and broken down. that wasn’t who she was. she was the shadow that took lives and was taken from in return.
that’s what she tried to tell herself.
her face hadn’t changed in the slightest, but that didn’t mean she felt the drop in her stomach when she saw his body. it was something only she could feel on the inside, that no one else noticed, even when it made it hard to walk as she took her place silently in the middle of the half-circle, continuing to stare at the body.
she was the one that took lives, could she really curse at life for getting back at her? furthermore, she’d taken so many lives since she was a child, it surprised her how she could still be so affected by it. she worked in the mafia for god’s sake, no one was guaranteed tomorrow. she hadn’t even known earnest that well, so why was this hurting so much?
had she been more attached to him than she realized? impossible; she knew better than that.
was it because she blamed herself? believed there were so many things she could have done differently, from when he’d first left her to the moment she’d left mori’s office afterward? it was a spiral; she could have scoped out her surroundings better, found the sniper sooner, attacked sooner, taken other risks, asked someone to check on earnest, anything–
more footsteps sounded into the alley. a few subordinates, chuuya, who had taken off his hat at the sight of the body, and a few minutes after, mori, running a hand through his hair.
they all stared in silence, unsure of what to say first. yesterday, the guild had tried and failed to ambush two mafia members. the mafia had outmaneuvered them and swore to retaliate with 10 times the force, but today, they had lost a member. lives were flimsy and bound to be lost in war and this was only the beginning, but no one was going to say that. with two executives and their boss present, no man in shades was going to open their mouth. it was between three people in that alleyway, and one of them was shaking.
“[y/n].”
she looked down at her own hands that wouldn’t stop trembling, no matter how hard she tried or willed them to stop. she wasn’t like this. she wasn’t weak. she was the one who took advantage of others, never let anyone outsmart her, never let her emotions take control of her. hell, she rejected the idea of emotions. all she should feel was misery and that was it. that was what she knew, that was what helped her help others. so why wouldn’t her hands stop fucking moving?
from her peripheral, she saw a gloved hand reach out to place itself over them before she was pulled into a gentle hug. she tried to keep her breathing at a normal pace, but his arms made her want to collapse all together. she was tired of being strong. why did she have to make the decisions, find it normal that her boss had sent her into danger as an experiment, take the risks, and be the one personally impacted?
she didn’t have many doubts that mori most likely knew the guild would send this message through earnest’s body. he probably knew what would come as a result, too.
their message had awakened a monster.
they would not leave unscathed.

i am trying to write from a balance between [y/n] not questioning her allegiance to the port mafia but also not making mori out to be an angel because he's not ♡
i believe in double updates and i think I will also post the next chapter on sunday or monday because it's a much more interesting chapter!! :3
(stormbringer slight spoiler warning but not really if you've looked at the port mafia on the bsd wiki) [y/n] became an executive soon after the events of the dark era and dazai disappeared mori needed someone to fill in the gaping holes he'd left in the structure and organization of the mafia. she essentially took over the position from verlaine (although she doesn't know that it's verlaine she inherited the position from because mori knows she'd likely end up telling chuuya if she found out verlaine is still alive). chuuya also became an executive soon after and if [y/n] is asked when she became an executive with him around, she'll say her and chuuya became executives around the same exact time because he's still salty about losing that competition to dazai
thank you for reading! <3

I joke about my laptop going into multiple organ failure but the timeline of events suggests it is actually self-destructing as a retaliation for me thinking about getting rid of it. like
??? Ago – keyboard shortcuts and commands no longer worked. I did every troubleshooting process but eventually decided it didn't matter because I usually have the laptop hooked up to a desk monitor & separate keyboard anyway. Everything else was fine.
Couple months ago – start thinking about getting a new laptop and researching which ones are best, because I'd like something that could handle multitasking much better.
Last month – charging port broke so I had to have the charger in at a specific angle or it wouldn't charge. Annoying, but not the end of the world.
Two weeks ago – Frustration with my laptop's continually slowing performance built. My dad sent me a link to a place that custom refurbishes laptops. i saved the link. In the same week, I noticed that a) the fingerprint reader stopped working and b) the charge held for about 30 minutes maximum.
3 days ago – laptop turned off suddenly. When I turned it on, everything (from the mousepad response time to loading programs) was taking forever. I went through the windows help centre's tips to improve performance but no dice. Everything pointed toward a problem with the processor. Began to weigh up cost of repair Vs replacement
2 days ago – laptop turned off again. I realised that it wasn't holding its charge at all and would only work while plugged in. So, that was the battery done for too.
Realised at this point repairing the laptop (that had never really been all that great) would probably cost almost as much as getting a new one. Reluctantly dug up my research and began comparing it against the refurbishment place.
A day ago – ordered a customised refurbished laptop. Figured I could manage the week-ish wait for a new one.
Laptop slowed down even more & also kept telling me that my Wacom tablet driver wasn't running, even though I wasn't trying to use the tablet. Windows Security inexplicably stopped working.
Today – turned off AGAIN. when I switched it back on, the screen display was upside down. the sensor that rotates the screen when I use the laptop folded at a 360° angle has broken. It's now stuck in the touchscreen/tablet mode.
Also if I fold it open too far or try and fold it into/out of tablet mode it switches off and it's taking longer and longer to boot up again each time
I am. so fucked

Daily update post:
The biggest news out of Israel today is of course that late last night, the government approved a deal with Hamas to release some of the hostages. Here are the details as reported on the news:
50 hostages will be released in 4 groups over the course of 4 days, during which there would be no fighting. Hamas said they will be women and kids, Israel will only be told who's being released the day before. Not all kids are being released. Israel in exchange will release 150 people convicted for terrorist activity. Hamas says it will use these 4 days to try and locate 20 more hostages to be released. Hamas says that some of the hostages are in the hands of smaller terrorist organizations, and some are also being held by civilian families. Just a reminder that some civilians from Gaza followed the terrorists into Israel once the border fence was torn down. Most probably just to loot the houses attacked by terrorists, but at least some partook in the killing of Israeli civilians. Here is a vid of one such man, riding a bicycle stolen from a murdered Israeli, bragging about having killed 3 family members...
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d97f0c97a28017c4e738f5ad830c4cb0/e356adecf552d588-4a/s540x810/7d360111884d5cd54510d97bd8496d7a948a3e98.jpg)
For every additional hostage Hamas finds and releases beyond the 50 agreed upon, it will get 3 more convicted terrorists released. For every 10, it will get one more day without fighting, for a total possible break of 6 days. In addition, Israel will not be flying over Gaza, not airplanes and not drones, for 6 hours daily.
It's reported that the stop in fighting will start tomorrow (Thursday) at 10 in the morning. Based on past experience, you can expect Hamas to fire rockets at Israel even past 10, just to show it got the "last word" and Israel will have to contain this, in order to keep the whole deal from falling apart.
The ambivalence about the deal that I tried to express in yesterday's daily post is what I'm hearing almost across the board. People want the hostages who will be freed, they're afraid for the fate of those who won't be, and they're scared of how Hamas might use this break in the fighting.
I think the most infuriating thing Israelis have come across is people describing the deal as "hostage exchange." Multiple Israelis have posted to make the same point: the hostages kidnapped from Israel were all innocent. The prisoners that will be released were all convicted for violent activity. They did not murder, but they tried to.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e3983babe86e4d6352c3b7814c20410e/e356adecf552d588-3d/s540x810/1cbdbd356c5fe33366033758075c3bdc9a296e4f.jpg)
I saw an interview with one Israeli mother who had survived an attempted murder by a terrorist. She discovered that the woman who committed that crime is one of the prisoners who might be released. The thing is, they used to live in the same neighborhood. The mother asked, "Why should my kid have to see every day the woman who tried to kill me?" Almagor, an Israeli organization for victims of terrorism, has petitioned the Israeli supreme court against the deal. It's not likely to work, as the supreme court has indicated in the past it has no jurisdiction over political decisions, only legal ones.
And of course there's the fear that more Israeli soldiers might pay the price for the fact that Hamas will use the break in the fighting to re-arm and learn from its failures so far. That's the better scenario. There's also the possibility that Hamas would do what they did on "The Black Friday" in 2014. On Aug 1, a ceasefire with Hamas was supposed to start at 8 in the morning. At 9:05 Hamas terrorists used a terror tunnel to attack Israeli soldiers, murder them and kidnap the body of one of them, Hadar Goldin. Nine years later, the body has not yet been returned.
Today is not a day of relief in Israel.
The UK has announced it would allocate 7 million pounds to fighting antisemitism, which is welcome news. Switzerland said it will pass legislation that would prohibit Hamas activity through it.
A uniquely Israeli moment that happened yesterday... Jewish first sergeant Mordechai Shenvald, who was seriously injured in Gaza, playing with his Arab physician, Doctor Darwashe, a song by famous Arab singer Um Kultum, called Inti Umri:
Israel has torn down today a Jewish settlement established illegally in the disputed territories. You'll always hear about when Israel takes down Arab houses built illegally, but I bet most people here havne't heard about it when Jewish Israeli civilians get the exact same treatment for this exact same offense.
This is part of the testimony of a father to a girl with special needs, whose family has survived the Oct 7 massacre:

This is 25 years old Shani Gabai.

She was considered missing since the Oct 7 massacre. Today, her body was identified among the other victims of the music festival.
