roman sat in a booth, looking out the window but focusing on nothing. he reached down under the table to grip his knee, giving it a squeeze. his leg stopped twitching, thank god. air came out in a rush from his nostrils, the anxious energy in his chest barely settling.

he'd agreed to make a dating app profile after his sister, josie, and his so-called friend, viktor had seemingly teamed up to twist his arm.it was entirely new territory. in new york, he'd met people through friends. in kismet, he'd met andrew, his last serious partner, after he'd wandered onto the farm and offered to help tidy the place up. now, apparently dating apps were the way, and roman felt very out of depth.

somehow, he'd managed to land a small handful of dates. laila was one of them. she was gorgeous, intelligent, and good-natured - at least through a phone screen. she was british, and an event planner at the appropriately named forever and always, a wedding property. and meeting her made roman nervous.

sighing again, he ran his hands through his hair, getting used to the new length. the caveman had been tamed, partially so he looked more like his photos. wouldn't want to be accused of being a catfish, and had to be on his best behaviour for a first date, even if it was only lunch.

roman turned back to look across the room when he spotted her. her sudden appearance, and confirmed existence startled him, but he covered it quickly, raising his hand in greeting. "laila? hey--" roman got up, standing too quickly and slamming his knee against the table. he grimaced from the sharp pain, but quickly covered it up, a flush spreading across his face and darkening the tips of his ears.

finished my reread of tsc, will be posting my thoughts as they become coherent. starting off strong.

heard the headcanon renee explained gender to jeremy via text, regarding cody, which i like.

sometimes how characters deal with matters like gender and sexuality isn’t relevant to the plot, but i am confused where the line is drawn in tsc because jean does not make any remark outloud or in his internal dialogue about cat and laila, or cody, but does make a distinction in between the problems his feelings for renee, versus his feelings for kevin/jeremy, specifically mentioning that the difference is because they are men. we do see homophobia and the like in the book, (cody’s family, lucas’s comment about jeremy bringing jean on the team because he had the hots for him.) i’m not sure how to word this, but i feel that jean’s internalized homophobia and predjudice is limited to what he experienced in the nest. he doesn’t seem to hold many values from his time in france, we don’t know what sort of prejudice he was exposed to before the nest, so maybe the reason he has internalized homophobia about being attracted to men, but doesn’t bat an eye at a wlw relationship or a nonbinary person is because those are just another new thing he is seeing for the first time. in la he is exposed to much that is alien to him, (green spaces, food courts, rice cookers, etc) that everyone around him is used to. new things like boba, he has a negative reaction towards because of the conditioning in the nest around diet, but it seems that he had no prior experience (raven hatred, conditioning, fear) with wlws and nbs to go off of when he meets the trojans for the first time.

Even just the small adjustment to the poster brought a wider smile out of Aliye, head bobbing approvingly towards it. "Totally on the edge now. Weddings could be such a high stress environment, wanting to make sure that everything was perfectly put together for such a special day. Her own job could have its own moments of stress, but on the whole was a much more relaxed field to be in.

"It's actually kind of wild. I've had some friends turn into completely different people at their weddings. You think you know a person, but damn, make one mistake at a wedding and they're like monsters," she chuckled, having been on the receiving end of her share of bridezillas. "I can see that. I had one friend that put me on mom duty for the entire wedding weekend. I was fully responsible for keeping her mom from meddling in anything, which...was not an easy ask."

When the Stars Alight appreciation week - Day 1

It's WTSA appreciation week, baby! If you don't know what I'm talking about, When the Stars Alight is @aninkwellofnectar's debut novel, the first in her The Essence of the Equinox series.

I grabbed an ARC of WTSA back in March of this year and, partly against my expectations, it became one of my favorite reads of 2023. So, when Camilla announced this appreciation week for her book, I immediately jumped on the train.

Day 1: Reasons why you picked up the book or reasons why you love it

Laila — When I find such an excellent female protagonist, I grab onto her like a monkey. Laila is incredibly complex: she's clever and manipulative, but also compassionate and at times naïve, ambitious, deeply insecure, kind, righteous, just a total gem.

The webbing plot — There's nothing better than a plot with multiple, apparently separate, storylines that slowly intertwine. Threads seem to disappear, only to pop up again when you least expect it, and you find out there's a new knot connecting them to the main story. The buildup is so juicy and I can't wait the end of the series to see the full picture.

The TVD-esque dynamics (but better) — I'm a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries, that show is like cocaine for me, but I also can't help but wish many things were executed better. WTSA takes those dynamics I fell in love with and, in the hands of a great writer, they gain extra degrees of complexity.

The writing — Flowery prose isn't one of the things I actively look for in a book, mostly because the majority of authors do a terrible job at it. Well, here not only is it an essential feature of this novel, the author delivers a beautiful baroque prose that immerses you in her world from head to toe. While reading about the food Laila eats, I was salivating.

The setting and its contrasts — WTSA is split between Soleterea, a land of warmth, summer and life, and Mortos, a land of cold, winter and death. Both are described so vividly you can feel the frost of Mortesian woods and the smell of flowers in Soleterean gardens. The continuous contrast of light and dark, hot and cold, life and death is thematic perfection.

The plethora of female characters — Most of the characters in WTSA are amazingly written women in different roles and a distinct personality each. As someone who also writes majority-women casts of characters, I couldn't not appreciate.
