A thin brow raises at his demeanour. Never having met Caspian before, she had no reason to believe that he wasn't Billy. They looked similar enough, and she had been desperate to catch Russo. At this point she fully believed him to be Billy pretending to be someone else, unless Billy really did lose his memory, but she had her doubts.

Dinah should be sleeping. The tribute parade is only a matter of days away and she is already stressing about it. Their stylist teams this year seem even dumber than usual, and Dinah has been having visions of their tributes slathered in coal dust with headlamps on — not a great look. She tries to remind herself that there is nothing she can do about that and she should focus on the things she can influence — coach them through their interviews, schmooze sponsors, teach them how to handle a knife or make a fire. But her mind can't seem to move past the parade to get her to that point yet, the Capitol seemingly taking away her usually impeccable ability to compartmentalize and prioritize but what else is new? She never feels like herself here, not really. The closest she gets are the nights she lets herself find comfort in Cyrus, sneaking into his room and pressing close to him. But right now it's still early enough in the festivities that Di is pretending to have her shit together.

So she has her moments in private, like now. Holed away in the bedroom that has been hers for over a decade now and still feels as foreign as it had on night one. She wants to go home, wants to see her brothers but for now a restless nights sleep in a bed that is far too soft for her. She'd lost track of how long she had been tossing and turning when a knock has her jumping out of bed, heart racing and fingers searching for a weapon that isn't there. Warning bells are going off in her head — not safe. No where is safe, especially not here. But she forces herself to take a breath, reminds herself that if the President had caught wind of the rebellion they wouldn't be knocking on her door nicely. They'd be barging in to haul her off to a torture chamber.

Breathe. A slow inhale and exhale leaves her, fists clenching together to stop her hands from shaking as she opens the door. She'd been expecting a tribute, maybe. Their boy this year is young — maybe he'd been looking for company. But instead she's greeted with an all too familiar sight, her stomach dropping as she takes in Cyrus in all of his battered and bruised glory. "For fucks sake, Cyrus." She reaches out, fingers tangling in the bloody mess of his shirt and tugging gently. "It's been one night. How could you have possibly pissed someone off this badly already?" But she isn't surprised in the slightest. This is an old song and dance for them and while she's usually quick to call Cyrus on his shit when he needs it, she also knows that he isn't always entirely at fault in these incidents. hiii new pinned post again because the last one was outdated, there are links to the previous ones in that one as well. unfortunately there are no real updates re: my dad's wrongful imprisonment. at this point, they might be waiting until the statutes of limitations happen and it's over, i don't know. he has a therapist who's kind of expensive but we have to pay for and he has to go weekly because of all the trauma he has left from being in jail and from losing his job/not being able to find a new one because of this. his health got worse in there, too, so there are a lot of different doctors he has to go to, medications, etc. he's doing better every day, though, but that takes a lot of money of course.

i used to have a redbubble account that helped me get afloat alongside this blog, but it got suspended without notice and never got reinstated no matter how many things i've tried, so... that's another source of income that we lost. i used to make around 30/40 dollars a month there, now i make like 1/2 dollars on teepublic monthly, that's a huge difference. argentina's economy was always bad but it has been an absolute disaster since the current president got elected. prices rise literally on a weekly basis for everything from basic groceries to public transportation, power, water, phone bills, etc. my laptop's keyboard broke at some point and i almost had to buy a new one with money i literally didn't have, just going into negative numbers, but i managed to find a guy who replaced it for as cheap as he could. it was still expensive, but it was better than having to buy a new laptop entirely. would love to get a stable job, but that's always been impossible in this country, even more so lately. for updates on argentina in english, this person on twitter makes very good informative threads if you're interested.

on top of that my dog passed from cancer a few weeks ago, that was really expensive for us too, meds and appointments and special foods and everything that we could do to keep her happy until it was her time to go, and she was. i also started therapy around the time she was diagnosed (thank god) but my therapist had to rise her rates because of the economy mess i already mentioned, so... yeah. everything is exhausting and everything is expensive, and this is literally my only source of income. it's also the thing that i love doing the most and the thing that keeps me sane in all of this mess, so hey, never leaving. in fact, if anything ever happens to this website, you can always find me under fashion_runways on twitter or probably anywhere else. some of you guys mentioned not seeing my posts lately too, so if you can/want to, you can turn notifications on!

bash knew that parties weren't everyone's thing but he figured they were always a good way to connect with people. which was one of his favorite things. bash felt bad looking at dinah. she seemed like she didn't know many people at the party and he figured he could be a friendly face in a sea of strangers. It has been a whole entire week since I posted my previous set of recs and guess who is still hip deep in BATFAMILY fic and really wants to cry about feelings about all the Bats and Birds, but most especially my beloved Dick Grayson? At Last (The Wayhaven Chronicles), i guess? it's all about love being stored in food and also the rush from the realisation that you're in love and it's Nate and it's Mona, and then it's me just kicking my feet, giggling.

New 52 Batgirl issue #38 Thoughts.

Wow. That must feel surreal. Anyway, last issue had Batgirl post a picture of herself online, to combat against the imposter-hers.

Let’s see how it plays out.

Start off with a montage of Batgirl saving people and getting online famous. And while I said my piece last issue, I can’t help but feel that this feels a bit added on. Wouldn’t it make more sense to try and investigate into copycats for a common thread, or try and stage a crime to catch one?

Anyway.

On that note, Dinah and Barbara have an argument and admittedly, I do like Barbara’s statement of how Batman doesn’t get to order her life around. But I can’t help but feel that this argument would’ve gone better if we got to see it build up instead of a montage then immediately smacking to the Dinahbabs breakup.

The colours and lighting are nice touches.

Cut to Barbara with her current partner, and we get a not so subtle allusion to the downsides of fame. The red dress is eye catching. There’s also a debate because Liam isn’t a particular fan of Batgirl.

Fun fact, Dinah’s in a band. Neat.

Another reference to fame and narcissism with sad-face Babs. She goes as Batgirl to get some info from Qadir. And the dialogue “People expect this of me. Expect this of us.” Feels a bit off. Could said something like “This is what I do. I’d appreciate any help.”

Big fan of the colours here. They should release the full song. Anyway, Jordan is a jerk, and wakes people up with the sound of his car. That thing sounds like it’ll echo.

The high speed chase is pretty good with the large lettering sound effects. Do you think anyone’s getting pictures?

Jordan is incapacitated, but Batgirl gets held at gunpoint by one of the cops. Hm. Lovely. Suspiciously familiar, but unexpected.

She gets away, of course, and we end on a somber yet mysterious note.

To be continued, ominous. So, someone’s not just impersonating Batgirl, but Barbara at the same time, most likely.

hi!! new pinned post, because the last one had gotten long again-- if you want to read previous posts, here's the first one, here's the second one. the tl;dr from those is that my dad got wrongfully imprisoned abruptly, our place was raided, the cops broke a bunch of shit and took a bunch of our things and still haven't returned them, they left all the broken things for us to spend money in repairing, we had to spend money on a lawyer, trips to visit him, new clothes, medicine and food for him in jail, etc. it was a mess, way more details in both posts. he's back home now, with an ankle monitor because technically his case isn't being investigated yet, they haven't done anything about it at all, the case hasn't moved one ounce lmao it's great, always trust the judicial system and cops!! ugh, anyway!

we found a therapist for my dad who can help her deal with all the stuff he had to deal with while in prison, all the bullying, the depression, the starving, the separation, etc. he needs to get a bunch of other medical appointments, has to get surgery, among other things, but for now things are much better on that front. that being said, he did lose his job and my old redbubble account got suspended without a warning months ago, plus argentina's economy is... really bad right now. food prices rise every day, public transportation prices went up like a 200% in a couple of weeks, salaries are low and stuck there, subsidies are gone, the local peso keeps falling, we have an absolute psychopath as a president who spends more time insulting or threatening anyone who oppose him than caring about people. it's a disaster. for updates on argentina in english, this person on twitter makes very good informative threads if you're interested.

anyway, i used to make around 30/40 dollars a month in redbubble, and that used to help adding up to the donations i got here, and it got suspended, so now i make like 1/2 dollars on teepublic monthly. so... it's a huge loss. there's a lot of things me and my mom are in charge of paying-- groceries, power and water and gas, medicine (she's diabetic, i have some sort of chronic sinusitis), our dog and cat's food and medicines, wifi, phone bills, public transportation, healthcare, my dad's new therapist... so, you know, i really need anything people can donate. even if it's just a single dollar, literally any amount helps. i love fashion so much and i love this blog, i work really hard on it even when my brain says no, and i really appreciate how much you guys love it too. i love seeing people discover new styles, new designers, new things to be inspired by. so, yeah... i'm never going anywhere, but i do need help to basically stay afloat.

My headcanon for what happens to the Birds of Prey in a universe where Flashpoint didn't happen, is that, having faked Oracle's death, Barbara proceeds to come up with a bunch of new aliases and also rearranges the birds so that she now has multiple specialized teams each made up of 1-2 people who know that Oracle's alive and masterminding everything and new recruits who don't.

Dinah gets sent undercover to round up her new52 Birds of Prey team. With Katana (aimless from the recently disbanded Outsiders presumably (sorry, I don't read a ton of Outsiders comics)) as backup, they bring in new recruits Starling and Poison Ivy in one of Barbara's more reform minded measures. Later, after the court of owls stuff, she also gets saddled with Strix.

Helena is in charge of forming a more Gotham-focused team with the Question and Manhunter to take on corruption.

Zinda is sent to pull on some of Barbara's old suicide squad contacts--specifically Vixen and Nightshade to form a team that does international espionage type things under cover of Vixen traveling for her modeling/fashion career. It might also be interesting for Barbara to pull on her ties to Batman inc to supplement their different missions.

I will be honest, I don't know what to do with Hawk and Dove.

Anyway, this goes on for a while with Barbara keep trying to do more and more and have operatives doing more and more at once. The building subplot is that everyone's worried that she's overextending herself. It all culminates after Damian's death, when Barbara blames herself for being too busy trying to everything that she missed what was going on with Leviathan and was unable to stop Damian's death. She ends up paring down and refocusing the Birds back into a small set of operatives again.

Of course, it's not long after that that Helena quits the team without giving a reason when Checkmate pulls the old strings they have on her to get her undercover in Spyral, and Barbara has to adjust once again. (Do I think that Helena would get dragged into Checkmate in a universe where she as firmly ensconced in the Birds of Prey and not a dangling thread King and Seeley could tug on? Probably not, but this is my headcanon and there's a secret good version of Helena in Sypral that lives in my head (and will doubtless be dashed against the rocks when I actually get to reading the arc)).

Okay, finished Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, and I am just so conflicted by this entire title. It’s not only extremely mediocre, but it’s uneven and it doesn’t quite know what its audience is.

The good:

Look, if you want to sample the best of what’s going on in this title, I am going to point you to issue #18, a one-shot in which the team infiltrate a tech conference in Paris together to track down some criminals. It’s probably the closest this entire title gets to either Vol 1 or Vol 2 of Birds of Prey, and it features the team actually using their networks and skill sets on a mission that they are especially suited to. Dinah even wore an outfit that gave me happy flashbacks to Chuck Dixon days when Babs used to pick her clothes and jewellery for missions. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

There’s a couple of other stories in it I don’t mind, but this was definitely the highlight of the lot.

If only the rest of this title was of similar calibre.

I also have to say that this title did in fact reunite Barbara, Dinah and Helena and get them back to being best friends based out of Gotham together, and return the Clock Tower, and acknowledge that Barbara used to be Oracle, including letting her actually use a computer to solve crimes and that’s not nothing to me. The general status quo trappings being reinstated are indeed valuable.

The rest:

Oh wow does this title want to make fun of fans who miss Barbara Gordon as Oracle. The entire ‘desperate Oracle fanboy who makes himself into a new Oracle’ plot is both pointed and painful. There are ways to do that story gracefully that actually respects Barbara and Oracle fans, and that was not it.

It also doesn’t really want to have the team leave Gotham, or even have many fights with actual stakes. There was definitely a preferencing of Grrlpower! aesthetics over actually telling compelling plots.

Literally having a plot where the “Daughters of Gotham” tried to wipe out all the men in the city with a virus targeting Y-chromosomes and so all the female heroes had to team up to defeat it sure was a decision that was made. As was acknowledging trans people exist in a single panel after the story finished, but not bothering to actually investigate or address this as a concern while the plot was ongoing, even though Alysia Yeoh is one of Barbara’s closest friends.

There’s also the running plotline threaded through n52 that got another showing here: all of Barbara, Dinah and Helena’s mothers are secretly alive and bad news.

I don’t hate that their mothers are used for plot instead of their fathers (though I really really really hate the Dinah Drake retcon in particular), but it was just so…oh. So Maria Bertinelli is also alive here? And even worse news than Huntress: Year One? Astonishing. So unusual given what’s been done to Barbara Eileen and Dinah Drake since Flashpoint.

I cannot in good conscience recommend this run, but there are in fact good aspects to it. You just really have to dig for them.
