Seven months or so after Rothko concluded his second European sojourn, which included four weeks in Rome, the Houston-based art patrons John and Dominique de Menil paid Rothko the first of what would be many visits. In February 1960, the couple met him at his Bowery studio to see the paintings he had intended for the Four Seasons restaurant in the newly completed Seagram building, an edifice designed by Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson to present high modernist architecture in terms of maximally luxurious effects. Within weeks of returning from Europe, Rothko had withdrawn his paintings from their originally intended destination in that environment of princely splendor and conspicuous consumption. This act of principled renunciation impressed the de Menils, who were also captivated by the Seagram canvases themselves; later, Dominique de Menil would remember, 'They made for an extraordinary mystical environment, a mix of intimacy and transcendence that can be found in certain churches, certain mosques'. Two days after their first visit, the de Menils returned to Rothko's studio to propose acquiring the canvases for a future Catholic chapel to be built on the campus of the University of St Thomas in Houston, an institution they served as prime benefactors. But both the artist and his prospective patrons agreed that the significance of the undertaking would require freshly conceived art. And there the idea rested for another four years.

Simon was so desperate for Edwin's attention that he resorted to ritual sacrifice
Monty was ready to go against Ester to try to save Edwin even after he was turned back into a crow
Thomas (the cat king) got beaten to death because he refused to betray Edwin, then risked dying again to bring him a poisonous flower
Charles chose Edwin over a potentially peaceful and happy afterlife, stayed with him and protected him for thirty years then went through literal hell to find Edwin and fought to bring him back while promising to spend forever with him
Even Crystal and Niko were willing to risk death/die to save Edwin (and Charles) from Ester
Forget being a detective. This boy needs to be teaching a class on RIZZ. He seems like he has none but apparently he's got it all.

The achievement of this mature format, however, entailed yet more hesitant experiment. Rothko still wanted drawing, but drawing would henceforth have to happen as a by-product of his bringing his large, expansive fields to life. His attachment to Rembrandt and Turner is instructive in this regard, at least as each artist left behind his more academic youthful exercises. Rothko's approach to drawing conceptually and practically rejected the distinction, as codified in the Renaissance, between disegno and colore: he no longer drew, as in time-honored practice, in order to guide the subsequent filling in or modeling of an area; his drawing arrived at the same time as and from the same procedures. There is no reason to assume that drawing is not present in every stroke of his brush in a fully realized early painting like the russet-toned Untitled of 1950 (cat. no. 25), but it happens in the painterly drama at the margins. It is there that the large upper mass pulls away from the edge at the upper left-hand of the format; looking more closely, one sees that its overall warm ochre is composite rather than unified, with the edges of more than one rectangle sedimented beneath. Prolonged looking transforms one large shape into massed ranks of slightly shifted, superimposed ones. At the lower edge of the mass, the stacking of its component rectangles reveals itself in a sort of beveling at the edge, approaching the intervening horizontal band, within which the old energetic movement of disparate entities is compressed. Echoing effects in the lower zone of the composition provide a warmer counterpoint to the main event above. Against the powerful effect of simplicity at first encounter, the activity at the margins becomes all the more intense and absorbing the longer one looks.

White supremacy needs corrupt men.
White supremacy protects corrupt men.
Our society is corrupted by white supremacy.
Only Republicans could/would find a black lawyer like Clarence Thomas and install him as Justice who upholds and advances white supremacy.
Connect the dots.
