they were the best part of this episode

No. 1: More Gummy Lizards

this is the only scene that matters ever, thank you. [buddy fr said "pillow time -w-" and plopped down] -> i love that the trio is this comfortable with each other, Gumigoo doesn't even question it

No.2: Cartoon Physics at their FINEST

man's head will not move from that spot 😭

No.3: Yes, there's even more

this entire episode was beautiful, and these three were the stars of the show. The way it alternated between a silly little group of buddies trying to save Gumigoo's mom and existentialism? amazing -> it also, i think, plays into the way a cartoon will start off relatively lighthearted and then go entirely batshit in the second season {gravity falls, owl house, steven universe- yk?}

No.4: Ah... this again

"but you've done this.. for what?" type energy that immediately changes into "for the love of GOD, get this out of me." -> do you think Jax ever stabbed her at one point to see what would happen

No.5: It was supposed to be ME

literally just let him blow up the cosmos, he deserves it -> also, this episode really humanizes Jax a little bit. Not much, but he's not as unflappable as he portrays himself to be. the morning starts out like most others in your household— it’s somewhat peaceful, the smell of coffee brewing, breakfast at the table that you had whipped up, the tv silently rolling some 90s show that your family had found a liking to. your son, sage, was eating off of his spider-man accented plate, sitting on billie’s lap as he took a bite of his toast. your daughter, celeste, was sleeping peacefully in her bassinet, lips parted in her peaceful slumber, though she had no clue about the storms that would take place in a couple of hours.

“are you sure you’re okay taking celeste for her shots?” you ask, eyeing billie as she finishes off the last bit of her food, grabbing sage and kissing his forehead before placing him into the hardwood floors gently. she struts over to the couch where she grabs the diaper bag, determination etched on her face. “i’ve got this,” she says, though you can see the tiny flicker of doubt in her eyes.

“you know it’s harder on you than it is on her,” you tease gently, walking over to kiss her on the cheek, caressing the soft flesh with your ring-accented finger.

“i’ll be fine,” she insists, adjusting the straps of the bag on her back.

but you know billie. you know how she crumbles the second either of her kids so much as whimper, and it isn’t her fault— she just loves your babies so so much, and it hurts her to see them hurt. but it’s just shots, and it made you giggle a little when she would always cry at sage’s appointments, when sage wouldn’t even be shedding a tear.

when you arrive at the pediatrician’s office, it’s bright and sterile, the walls covered in cheerful murals of cartoon animals and cartoon characters. sage, clutching his stuffed bunny, sits beside you in the waiting area, happily distracted by the fish tank in the corner. billie holds celeste close, her hand resting protectively on the baby’s back as she coos softly.

“we’ll be quick, okay?” you tell sage, ruffling his curly hair. “just a few minutes, and we’ll go get ice cream, that sound good?”

he nods solemnly, though you know he’s only half-listening, his eyes glued to the colorful fish that swim peacefully around in the big tank. you giggle as sage sits in front of it, his little fingers dragging across each movement that the fish make.

the doctor, dr. hugo, is very friendly and gentle with celeste. she’s giggling at him, cooing back and forth and mimicking his words with incoherent sounds.

celeste is calm at first, her wide eyes darting around the room as the pediatrician speaks in soothing tones, letting you and billie know that she’s about to get the shot, the details, etcetera. but the second the needle appears, it’s like celeste knows.

her little face scrunches up, and then comes the wail—a piercing, heart-wrenching sound that cuts straight through you. you wince a little— you hated seeing her cry, but you figured that once the shot’s over, everything would be alright.

billie visibly flinches, her grip on celeste tightening as tears immediately spring to her eyes.

“oh no, baby,” she murmurs, her voice trembling as she tries to soothe celeste, her own tears now streaming down her face. “it’s okay, mama’s here.”

you step in quickly, gently placing a hand on billie’s shoulder. “hey, she’s alright baby. it’s just for a second,” you remind her, your voice calm but firm— you’re really calming her more than you’re calming celeste.

but billie’s shaking her head, her bottom lip in a pout as celeste’s cries grow louder. “i can’t stand this,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper. “she’s so little, and she’s so upset—”

“billie,” you cut her off gently, cupping her cheek so she looks at you. “she’s okay. you’re okay. we’re almost done— it’s good for her.”

the pediatrician offers a sympathetic smile as he finishes up, handing celeste back to billie, who immediately cradles her close, kissing her forehead.

“shh, it’s okay, sweet girl,” billie whispers, though her own sniffles betray her.

sage, who had been quietly watching from the chair in the corner, finally speaks up. he was so quiet, you honestly didn’t even know he had come back into the room.

“mama, why are you crying?” he asks billie, tilting his head in confusion.

billie lets out a watery laugh, brushing her tears away. “because your sister’s gotta get her shots, and it makes mama sad, too.”

sage seems to think about this for a moment before hopping off the chair and walking over. he places his little hand on billie’s leg, his stuffed spider-man clutched in the other.

“it’s okay, mama,” sage says earnestly. “that’s why…you’re the best mama in the whole world! because you’re nice and you love us!”

the words seem to break something in billie, who pulls sage into a hug with one arm, celeste still nestled against her chest.

“thank you, baby,” billie whispers, her voice thick with emotion, “i love you so much.”

you crouch down beside them, wrapping your arms around all three of your babies, basking in the moment for a second with sweet and loving eyes, your heart full.

celeste’s cries are already softening, her tiny hiccups fading as she nestles closer to billie.

“ice cream now?” sage asks, his eyes hopeful, breaking the sweet silence that engulfed your little family.

you laugh, kissing sage’s cheek. “absolutely. ice cream for all of us— except for mama.”

“why me?!” billie hollers as the pediatrician dismisses you, everyone treading out to the parking lot.

you giggle, “no ice cream for cry babies.”

your comment makes billie roll her eyes, and sage pouts as he looks up at you, “be nice, mommy. i think mama should get ice cream, too.”

“yeah!” billie giggles defensively, “see, i know sage will always have my back.”

and as you all pile into the car, billie finally looks over at you, her eyes still a little red but filled with gratitude. “thank you,” she says softly.

I think he’d secretly be ecstatic! Oh, you’re his fiancée? Maybe he’s a bit worried he won’t be able to satisfy all your needs or maybe that you’ll ask far too much from him, but he buries that all in the back of his head. Quite a while actually. Although, it’s been occupying his mind. It’s a full interrogation scene straight out of a show! ‘Who was that?’ ‘How long have you known them?’ ‘Who are they?’ and yada-yada. He immediately goes up to you the second he sees somebody being a bit touchy with you, absolutely intimidating them and sort of freaking them out with his sculpture head. He’ll just stand behind you and say “This is my partner.”

Oh, he’s a total sucker for them! He loves your kisses, he’s constantly craving a kiss from you no matter his mood, unless it’s something urgently important. If you do sneak a kiss on him whilst he’s very damn busy then he’ll scold you, then nudge you, indicating you should give him one more before he returns to the original topic.

L — How good are they with little ones 𝄞≛

This one’s a funny one!! I can totally see him arguing with some spoiled brat who says Ratio’s wrong about this thing or that thing. But I think he tries to remain calm for ”they rarely know any better. I know much more than them.” but he’d still totally be pissed at them and almost blow his lid! With nicer kids, he’s helping them out to the fullest!! He may not be fond of kids, nor are they fond of him but, he definitely holds care for them, and some kids might like him when they experience the nice Veritas!

M — How are your mornings with them 𝄞≛

Unsure, really. He’ll always wake you up at the same time as him unless you’re really exhausted then he’ll let you sleep and leave a note about what time he went out and some food for you. Although when you wake up together, he’ll take a bath with you, then you two will make breakfast together. Very cute!

N — How are your nights with them 𝄞≛

He’s like one of those people who immediately fall asleep the second the clock hits 10PM. No matter where he is, he’ll fall asleep at 10PM. Which is why, on some days he takes a bath with you at 9PM after dinner. Immediately, he goes on the bed with you, while you are just talking until the clock hits 10PM. Sometimes on nights where he needs to stay up for something important, he’ll do so but, the second he relaxes — he’s out!

I believe he is quite open with you. He’ll tell you anything that you ask about, so many details to the point you know more than you wanted to! He believes being open with you is the best way to solve any future miscommunication.

Quite patient. He’s more patient with you than others. He’ll always help you out when you ask for it! Even if you somehow really get him near the edge, he’ll try his best to remain patient as possible!

He remembers everything about you! If you decide to tease him about a question in which he got correct, and you tell him it was wrong — he’ll go on and on about it for hours about how he’s the correct one and that “you don’t know yourself!” if he genuinely wrong though, he won’t take it lightly. He’ll instantly note it down somewhere and try to remember it everyday!

R — What’s their favourite moment in their relationship that they remember 𝄞≛

Everytime you held his hand. Ratio could feel some sort of warm, fuzzy feeling swelling up inside of him when he recalls all the moments you held his hand. Be it while on a walk, you dragging him somewhere, an emotional moment, anything. Ratio would always remember the feeling of your hand. Oh how much he loves that hand he holds so dearly, to never let go of it<3

Quite protective. He’s almost like a mother! “Where are you going?” “Who are you going with?” “When will you be back?” and if you finished calling with somebody, if you don’t tell him who called he’ll just ask himself. “who was that?” waiting for you to tell him all the details, if you don’t, that’s also... okay?

He tries the best to his ability. He’s a member of the Intelligentsia Guild after all! Even if he’s busy, he’ll try as much as he can for you. For his love for you and, for your love for him, he’ll try the hardest he can.

Ratio has soooooo many drawings and sculptures of you. In every notebook of his, you’ll find a small doodle or a beautiful sketch of yourself. Even if you stumble upon all his sculptures, you’re bound to find a few of yourself in different poses. What you notice about these drawings though, is that he erases something on your ring finger. Even on his sculptures, you could notice small bumps on your ring finger, as if there was something there but he removed it...

1 & 2: I think Debling could’ve worked in the second half, and I’m kinda sad Cressida didn’t get a happy ending. The Creloise fell of a CLIFF after ep 5 but I think it could still be saved

5: no cishet man has ever loved his wife more than Anthony Bridgerton I’m gonna be ill

6 & 12: kanthony’s absence was felt BAD in the finale, I think their reactions to LW were sorely needed. Also Jonny and Simone have both said they’ll be at every sibling’s wedding and stick around for years but they missed Francesca’s??? Also felt their absence too much then. They’re both booked and busy I think we’ll continue to only get a couple episodes a season from them

8: Francesca did get to thrive happy in pt 2 my baby I love her

9: I think they managed to disconnect the mondrich plot even further like 😭 once again, I don’t mind them their plot just feels very empty

10: Pen and Delacroix CONTINUE to be my fave duo I love them so freaking much and they can never get rid of it

♡ one time, you have manny and her in your apartment to just hang out together. since these 2 are literally always hungry they basically beg you to make them something to eat (usually abby would never tell u to cook, since she loves doing it for you) but she was so tired and had to entertain manny bc if hes left alone for 5 seconds he turns into a 4 year old. so u go and make them some pasta while they chill in the living room. when u come back with their plates (and yours) you literally catch them playing some weird ass version of football with one of your fucking plushies. literally one of them is being thrown around the living room like a balloon from one side to the other and youre so shocked. youre standing there with the plates and immediately put them down on the table and try pushing abby away and shes like “what??? im playing with your dolls” and you start banging on her chest “they. are not. my dolls!!!!!” and she just melts bc ur so cute in ur apron and ur literally almost crying and she just coos at you “im sorry sweetheart im so sorry” but she cant help but laugh and manny’s literally cracking up on the floor

Luaisy's great, why does Nintendo do nothing with it?

I was thinking about Daisy's trophy celebration cutscene in Mario Power Tennis after watching a video about Luaisy, and you know what?

I'm gonna go over it bit by bit to show how one singular scene actually ends up saying ALOT about them and how they interact (which is good because it's pretty much the only cutscene they get in...anything 😭):

OK so Luigi specifically being the one to hand out her trophy isn't a big deal, he hands multiple characters their trophies, even characters he isn't particularly close to like Shy Guy and Wiggler. Still, in this case, instead of giving a formal "Congratulations" like he does with most of the other characters he gives trophies to, he excitedly goes "Oh Yeah!"

I'm actually not sure if he's trying to hype up the crowd (since he does turn towards the crowd as he says it, which is why he doesn't see Daisy coming before it's too late), or if he's just especially happy that Daisy won, but either way, I'm sensing favouritism!

But whatever, right? He likes her, we know that. The moment when this scene really starts getting good is when Daisy, wearing roller skates at her own awards ceremony by the way, zips right past him.

Not because she doesn't care about Luigi at all, she says "Hey Sweetie!" earnestly as she zooms past, that's something you only say to someone you care for. What's funny about this to me is that it shows where her priorities lie - she'd rather soak in the glory of her victory and wave at the crowd, even doing a little spin to show off as she stops. Let me be clear, I love this. I love this because it says a lot about Daisy in just a few seconds: she's sporty, she's reckless, she's a bit of a show off, she's more improper than one would typically expect from a princess, and she's prideful, although she does make sure to thank the crowd for their applause.

Luigi, in contrast to Daisy's show of energy and athleticism, is shown to be unalert and clumsy, as he doesn't move out of the way quickly enough and is left spinning. Something something opposites attract.

Daisy then says "I'll take that." in a rather brash way, before going back for the trophy. Then she either tries to grab the trophy but misses, or intentionally spins Luigi around this time just to provide an opportunity to show off, I'm honestly not too sure.

I like both possibilities, as they show either:

A) Unlike Luigi in...pretty much any game during the GameCube era up until (and after) that point (he can even be heard going "Oh nooooo..." in this very scene once the trophy slips from his grasp), she's not one to immediately panic or get worried when something goes wrong, suggesting she's more easy-going. She's also shown to be a lot more alert as she immediately circles back round, eyes only on the trophy, and expertly manages to catch it. This is also another good show of her athleticism.

or

B) Just how eager she is to show off, as she doesn't mind messing with her partner (in a way that not malicious of course) just to provide an opportunity to do a sick trick in front of an audience. She's very much not the nurturing type (good for her).

Either way, the cutscene ends with her catching her trophy and blowing a kiss to the audience. Luigi isn't even annoyed as he's once again left spinning, all he has to say is: "Nice catch" before collapsing on the stage. That guy is his girlfriend's Number 1 fan.

It is not often that Arlecchino shows her doubt, maintaining that half-pleasant façade to hide it all. If all people see is a ruthless woman with no regard for loyalty, then the details don't matter. There's no need to question, no need to dwell. She is one thing and nothing more, and she much prefers for nobody to notice the hesitancy in her drastic decisions, the thin-veiled regret as she watches the children she witnessed grow up go on to become valiant children of the Tsaritsa.

If there is anything more, it is disregarded as her unpredictability. She is a roach in the eyes of others, and perhaps she's ok with that…mostly.

To hear someone say "I love you" is strange to her, though it shouldn't be by now.

It shouldn't be unusual to wake up tangled in the sheets with you by her side or the struggle it ends up being to leave that mess as you try to convince her to spend five more minutes with you. It shouldn't be odd to discover that you've gone ahead and made her tea in anticipation of the time she will wake up or to have you remind her every morning that you hung her coat up to dry after she dumped it over the back of a chair the night before or to see you wandering around going about your own job.

But those events all feel surreal to her, even though she has watched you walk your patrol path a thousand times now, and she has seen you slack off where she sits by the window of Zapolyarny when you think nobody is looking.

You are very real, there's no doubt about that.

The things you do never click with her, however.

Perhaps you are real, but she made up these fantasies after watching you loiter by that one spot in the garden a little too long.

Yet every evening, you meet her in her office after you're officially let off for the day, and you usually bring snacks. You are most definitely there, then, as she watches you struggle to get through the door without damaging whatever you found for her to try, usually only small, a pastry you managed to get that you absolutely mustn't knock from your hands.

"I tried to get something that wouldn't make a big mess all over your stuff," you usually say, sometimes hacking on a 6guilty little "But~ these just looked so good…" to try and excuse you for bringing something that would cover her desk in crumbs.

Arlecchino doesn't mind because you went to the trouble of getting her something.

She got you a special chair to pull up and everything, and anyone else who uses it can deal with the death glare they get or find a different one.

But perhaps she made that up too, conjuring the image of someone fumbling their way through her office door to greet her with a smile, sometimes with jam on your mouth from taste-testing the gifts that she'll point out to you that you hurriedly wipe on your sleeve and pretend it was never there.

Maybe she put that chair there for nothing, and it never really moves, and each time she thinks this, she is sure this fantasy will all disappear.

However, every evening, without fail, as the sun begins to set out the window and the room is dyed an orange hue, the door opens, and there you are again. Delusions can't possibly be that persistent, and you would've scowled at her when she approached you in the hallways if you weren't aware of this relationship.

So it must be real, which she's well and truly aware of. There must be a person out there who sees what she cannot, someone who, by some miracle, manages to see past the things that block out all of the good. How can a person see anything but someone unworthy of their love?

What else is there to see? 

The idea of a person who deserves to be loved beneath bloodshed has become unthinkable.

For a person who has been exposed to Arlecchino's worst sins, who has seen everything, and whose worst offence in life is a little laziness on the job, how is it possible to look at her and smile?

Arlecchino often wonders as she watches you. She how you go through your routine of placing your things down, whether on the desk or beside them, then all too happily mosey on off to get your chair and drag it over to sit across from her. She doesn't know why it's this particular day that she asks. Perhaps the fact it was weighing on her mind after a recent mission had her list of redeeming qualities shrinking further and further. It is in her job description, and there are plenty of worse people in this world.

But do you deserve to be stuck with one of them?

"Did you ever feel pressured into accepting my feelings for you?" Arlecchino asks the question so suddenly as you're halfway through walking back with your chair that she sees the exact point you register what she said, freezing in place from the shock. "Whether through status or power," she adds.

You blink a few times before all the motion in your world resumes to greet you with the image of her staring you down from the other side of her desk, patient and waiting for your response. "Sorry?" You let the chair go to return alone to her, standing in the place where you always put it. "I don't, uh…follow? I'm sorry, I just— I'm not sure what you mean?"

She hesitates, momentarily glancing down before her age returns to you and your uncharacteristic expression riddled with worry. She must've made you upset again.

"You want to be in this relationship? With me, that is…" Arlecchino struggles to think of the words, saying them as soon as they appear in her mind. "Even though you know the kind of person I am, you still want that?" 

She studies your face as carefully as she can, watching the way you react as you absorb everything you just heard and assumedly try to put a response together in your head. Arlecchino has noticed before how you take longer to speak than her sometimes, but it tends to make everything you say more thought out, though you may end it like you're unsure.

"Well, I mean…if I didn't, wouldn't I just—" you pause for only a second— "break up with you?" There's silence after you finish. She doesn't say or do anything. To Arlecchino, that strangely almost makes sense, but you must be far too bold to admit that to a Harbinger. "It's not that I want to! I'm a little--…well, I think I'm just a little bit confused where that's coming from."

"I was thinking about it." You frown when she admits that. "Some of the things you have seen of me are…" Is there even a word to encompass that? "unbecoming of a lover."

Is that the right way to phrase it?

Again, you pause, and the telltale signs of consideration cross your face. An intense focus that barely lasts, and Arlecchino waits through it all to allow you your chance to answer, intent on allowing you that much. A few seconds more, and your features relax, looking back at Arlecchino with a tender gaze. "There's not really one 'right way', is there?" Your question, though rhetorical, strikes a chord with the many impulsive responses that flood her mind, all of which she keeps to herself. "You just kind of...try your best. Things might work out, or maybe they don't— the point is that you mean well and put in the work."

"That's not enough," she argues, "you deserve better."

"I deserve what I want." Your rebuttal makes sense in theory, but what do you want? She struggles to make sense of that part, the answer muddled by all of her thoughts and lost in her doubts. 

You could ask anything of her, and she would do it. Any material possession, every feeling, more love than you know what to do with in any form you desire—physical, emotional, intimate—and yet you never do. You accept her awkward hugs, that it takes her time to relax when you lay your head on her chest, the fact she sometimes snores, that her clothes may very well be covered in bloodstains when she comes home depending on uncontrollable circumstances.

You never ask for the things she has plenty of power to give you in return for those flaws.

She shakes her head, "but surely you want more."

"I don't."

"There is a lot wrong that you deserve compensation for." 

Arlecchino clenches the pen in her hand tightly, feeling the slight distress of pressure around it. She can't articulate what, not in the way she understands it; flaws is too broad of a term to use. You would instantly know and understand what she meant in a perfect world, but the world is not so generous.

"Like what?" you question. You feel that it’s obvious that nothing Arlecchino will struggle to say will shake you. She opens her mouth, prepared to refute it, headstrong and frankly stubborn as ever, but nothing comes out.

There is silence for a moment, and no one rebuts what you say. Nobody can. The only other person in the room fights with herself to yield and give in to your unwavering loyalty. In your mind, she is everything you want. There is nothing else you can ask of her than to simply accept that you wish to remain with her if only she will allow you to through her own emotional turmoil.

"Are you listening to what I’m saying?" you ask, frown creeping back onto your face as it tugs the corner of your lips down, seemingly against your will, "I could see the worst parts of you and still think you are the most beautiful person I’ve met."

Another chord is struck, her heart beating so loud it thrums in her ears like suddenly becoming aware it’s been threatening to beat out of her chest the entire conversation. She breathes, shaky and caught up in her own surprise. Somehow, she didn’t expect you to be so sweet in your words or throw her off guard so abruptly. She finds it hard to believe them. Arlecchino’s worries haven’t disappeared, only dwindled. It helps, if not completely. There is a reprieve in listening to you.

You have seen the worst of her, every crease she hasn’t ironed out, her sometimes rotten personality, her stained clothes, the weapons she cleans in your home. You have seen her walk to greet you covered in blood and gore from a savage fight, kneel before you and hold your hand with the same hands she uses to kill vagrants and petty criminals, kiss your skin with those lips that spill the vilest of curses against her enemies.

Before she realises what she’s saying, she blurts out a question, "Do you really believe that?" 

It is quiet, reminiscent of how gently you looked at her earlier as her voice barely breaks a whisper, and she can’t bring herself to break eye contact with you once she finds the courage to make it.

"I do." 

You smile at her, hoping she will smile back. A faint smile graces Arlecchino’s lips, ever the handsome picture. Her sincerity is comforting after such a scare. You still worry, and perhaps you will never stop with the way her mind likes to trick her. How long had she thought you secretly looked at her with disgust this time? You fear you won’t have an answer again, though you desperately wish for one. As much as you notice her awkwardness, dismissing some of it and observing other parts with more scrutiny, it is hard to make her talk to you at times.

"Thank you." It is all Arlecchino can think to say in response as she forgets what else she was going to challenge you on. It will return eventually, and she will face it again, but for now, it settles. Arlecchino can reasonably bury her doubt for a time.

"Can we keep talking?" you ask. 

"About anything," she confirms with a nod.

You turn away, walking across the room in pursuit of retrieving your chair from its designated spot by the wall. You pull it along, dragging it over the floor, and set it down across from her on the other side of the desk you’ve been talking across. Your seat welcomes you as it always does as you settle into place, now comfortably at eye level with her.

"In that case," you begin, taking the pen she holds and wriggling it from her hands. She relinquishes it without much of a fight, allowing you to place it off to the side out of the way. "I’m going to ask you how you are, and I would like you to answer me honestly."

"Anything for you, my love."

HxH Reread Chapters 8 - 14

• Biggest question is why anyone would run this exam without pay? (Aside from Hisoka the Lunatic and Tonpa the Weird, that is)

• Love how the first things established about Killua are his conflicting desires for a) competition, a way to prove his skills (perhaps the lingering touch of the Zoldyck pressure, a need to prove yourself worthy of the name); and b) his desire for safety. Here, for example, he tells Gon to stay close as someone he feels he can compete with confidence that he'll emerge without any serious harm, whereas he runs from Hisoka knowing he's a threat.

• Simultaneously, Gon demonstrates his perception and ability to judge a person's character as he instinctively denies Killua's admittedly accurate claim that he's like Hisoka despite only knowing him for two hours.

• Woahh, Leorio withstood a direct card attack from Hisoka? Really sad they cut this out in the anime because it's a pretty cool thing to note indicating that he really is Hunter material to have gotten through to this stage, and also adds some reasoning to why Hisoka lets him "pass" aside from just showing reckless bravery which doesn't seem to be the kind of thing Hisoka would approve of unless it's substantiated by some hidden physical strength.

• Speaking of which, I do like the rather crazed look Hisoka has when killing people. I think I personally prefer the anime's serene depiction of this atrocious clown as it's a bit more chilling but there's definitely merit to the sheer insanity emanating from his maniacal laugh.

• Not that I think it makes a significant difference, but it is interesting that the manga has a rando next to Leorio and Kurapika who survived Hisoka's initial onslaught and is actually the one who came up with the plan to run in the first place. It's nice to see that even our rational blonde is so startled at the sheer force that is Hisoka that he just follows the plan without any monologuing.

• The dialogue above is about Hisoka but I think it offers an interesting framework to view transmuters in the series, specifically Hisoka, Bisky, and Killua. All three individuals rely heavily on their instincts (as Bisky says at one point, she herself has lied so much in her life she can tell instantly when she's in the presence of someone else who's faking something) and they're quite adept at judging people (Hisoka's the one who came up with the nen-MBTI test which is, more often than not, quite aligned with the characters we see). That said, perhaps because of the efficacy of their own judgement, these characters find it especially hard to take someone else's word for it unless they themselves are thrown in the face of the facts themselves. For example, Silva told Killua to stay away from the Phantom Troupe but Killua doesn't truly consider that advice as legitimate until he's staring down Machi and Nobunaga first hand. There's a similar concept behind Killua finding it so hard to break away from the instinctive feeling of fear telling him to flee.

• It's interesting that the first person who has ever judged Gon's strength/potential specifically with no knowledge of his relation to Ging is Hisoka. In turn, Gon liked the excitement of that pressure, of being judged and deemed worthy, of fighting for Leorio's safety and feeling useful which are all things he is looking for in his journey.

• I think it's a pretty sweet moment when Kurapika tells Gon to keep the incident with Hisoka silent knowing it would undoubtedly worsen Leorio's mood by making him feel incapable, but I can't tell if saying the following is his genuine attempt of comfort or just another one of his roasts 😭 (Second two are def insults--Kurapika's a mood for sure):

• I wish we got to see more of these interesting subsects of hunters like the gourmet hunters or the disease hunters later on…if we do make it to the Dark Continent, I hope these characters and professions take the spotlight since we spend much of the story taking a look at the overarching ideology of a Hunter but not necessarily their day to day lives which would be fun to investigate

• Hanzo is such a dork—I can’t believe they made him so serious in the anime:

• They really changed this part of the exam a lot in 2011's adaptation. Not that I think the anime version is horrible, but I wonder why since the sushi element really helps its characters shine. Like, for example, we see Kurapika falter despite having an advantage due to his weirdly widespread knowledge (seriously, what books is this guy reading to learn about such random, specific things that no one else knows like cultural chastity symbols and the ingredients in a foreign dish) because it doesn't occur to him that Menchi could be judging arbitrarily and not as a proper examiner. Granted, he's not wrong to expect her to be as reasonable as the...er, highly functional and esteemed establishment that employed her (okay, maybe he should have guessed), but it does illustrate a blind spot in his logic that comes from the unexpected he can't prepare for beforehand.

• It's a really small moment but I love this panel where this guy who devalued gourmet hunting coming around to really appreciating not just the danger involved in the craft but the merit of its product and someone else's treasure. Just a bit of heart added to the story!

• I wonder why Menchi came around to liking Hanzo after yelling at him during the exam and blaming him for her decision to fail the entire cohort. Power of sushi, I guess. Similarly, it's an interesting tidbit that Killua was Satotz's favorite...no clue why though.

• Love the reiteration from Satotz that it's the Hunt that fulfills the hunter's Desires, not the item itself that they're searching for. I know I keep harking back on Ging's advice at the end of the election arc but it's such a coherent throughline embedded into the story. It's a little ironic, even, that Gon becomes a hunter to look for Ging, but only truly becomes a hunter when he embraces this mindset after he's lost his nen and comes to stop idolizing his father. (Sidenote: Hisoka is one of the character I think best embodies the Hunter philosophy even though, as Kurapika says, he's incredibly blood thirsty and has no tangible goal he's seeking aside from self-fulfillment.)

• I love how Killua admits he throws on this aloof cute-child act so no one ever gets close enough to know what he's actually serious and cares about. It's a defensive mechanism to prevent his enemies (or his family, really; looking at you Illumi) from finding out what matters to him as they could use it as a threat to force his obedience. But Gon is able to detect when he's lying or not, knowing that he's not quite like Hisoka although his family are assassins (in fact, Gon probably guessed, although he might not know why, that Killua threw out this statement to gauge his reaction). And because Gon is listening completely unbiased (and this is part of his ambiguous morality coming in, because Gon straight up doesn't care that Killua's a murderer so long as it's of his free will and he hasn't done anything to Gon or his friends specifically), Killua starts to feel more comfortable letting his guard down around Gon throughout the story and revealing his true self

• Is the echo rhythm just a movement technique kind of like Assassination Classroom's stun clap, or is it an application of nen that Killua uses without knowing he's using it (like Gon using zetsu before he knew what aura was)? I feel like this instance might be the former, but the claw sharpening thing seems a little too biologically strange to not be a nen-based application in my opinion.

• I stand corrected from chapter 2, we do see Kurapika voluntarily sleeping at least once more!

• Killua giving off Hiei vibes here, tbh. He really does have a lot of similarities to Hisoka like the intrinsic bloodlust and need for challenge.

Uzui Kagami admires Captain Ashiro Mina but that doesn't mean it didn't bother her whenever she hears Soshiro talk about her all of the time.

Hoshina Soshiro doesn't really think of Captain Narumi Gen as a threat but with how clingy he is to Kagami, boy does it feel annoying.

c. We promised to take care of each other, didn't we? [Fluff, Hurt/Comfort]

After their very first mission as Defense Force Officers, Kagami and Soshiro promised to take care of each other when they got injured. That means taking the entire day/week off just to nurse them back to health.

A few years have passed since then without any significant injuries, that's why it came as a surprise to Kagami when a certain someone came knocking at the First Division's front doors.

Kagami thinks that with how pathetic she is: being a burnt out adult, useless platoon leader, talentless heir, unreliable fiancee; as someone who succumbed to the pressure, she no longer deserves to be by his side. So she pushes him away.
