I had an idea for a short story with these OCS so I wanted to draw them up again to see how their faces would turn up. Plus it's been years since I've drawn them! I also used them to try to render my art in a pastel/crayon-like style since their story is fairytale-based and those things kinda go hand in hand. Also wanted to try something a fun with colors and I didn't really think that through lol

I used to render my art in a similar way like this (though more paint-like then pastel-like) so this was nice to come back to.

Hoping and praying Tumblr doesn't kill the quality

I have had this idea floating in my head ever since I watched ZombieCleo's pov on Witchcraft SMP a year late. I loved the story of the Time Witch and all the references to their other games, series, and timelines from non-story-based servers that Cleo also played on. The grand finale using the in-game resurrection to cure Cleo's zombie-ism and tie together all the timelines was a really neat video segment, and I thought it was a nice end to their series.

I am curious to know how things would have gone if they won the title of Supreme Witch.

This was also a big test in me using different layer effects in Clip Studio Paint since I am always trying to learn how to more effectively use the program. I know the glow isn't perfect, but I still love how it turned out. I had fun looking at different dancer refs for the poses and trying to translate Minecraft skins onto something that's Not Blocks.

Hi there! Your pieces often have this hazy, glowy quality and it’s beautiful! Do you use any overlays? I love your art!!

Oh yes I actually use a filter!

So here is how I add that slight glow to my drawings:

(This is for Clip studio paint users)

Easy version: Have your art as a png. Duplicate your only layer so you'll have two layers (the two same pictures). Select the upper layer

Go to:

Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur

Choose how much blur you want (not too much) and....BOOM!

You have a nice glow!

For CSP folks who know about Auto actions and want to be able to do it in one simple shortcut (with other cool effects):

So first you need to download the auto action retro effect v2:

(bear with me because everything is in french for me so I'm roughly guessing what it must be in english)

Then you are going to check your downloaded assets for that effect and click on this small thing at the bottom of your screen

This will add your effect into your automatic actions. To reach it, you need to click: File > shortcuts settings > Auto action

(this is for any auto action you might download so remember to do that each time)

This will open and you'll have your effect:

You'll have several actions available (which I invite you to test), but the one that's important is retro blur with a little bit of the others (sometimes I only use that blur)

Choose a shortcut of your choice (click on it and just tap it down) then click on "ok".

NOW you should have the blur effect. What I advise you is that once you finish a drawing, you make it into a png, jpeg, whatever file you want to post and use the effect on it (that way all the drawing is affected)

This will appear and you can play with it if you want more or less blur. If you don't want to hurt your eyes too much I would advise not put too much of blur. I also add a little bit of overlay (pink or purple, very little opacity)

And here you go!

in another bit of news: last night my dad gifted me his old tablet to use for my art so naturally I had to test it out with a quick John Dory ✨

notes:

- it's definitely going to take a bit to get used to a much bigger screen—everything feels so cumbersome and like I can't control my lines at all, definitely the most stressful part of the process 😬. As a result this drawing turned out kinda wonky and disproportionate but I'm hoping this will improve with practice.

- i'm also going to have to transfer a bunch of ibis paint files from my phone to the tablet but luckily I figured out how psd files work 👍

- this thing has clip studio and infinite painter pre-installed but I'm going to stick to ibis paint because it's just what i'm used to okay

- it's really hard to type on this thing

my first piece colored for the @zutaracoloringbook !

the lines were done in clip studio paint, the color in marker, colored pencil, gel pen, and paint pen. with some minor digital touch ups after scanning.

you can color this piece for yourself for free! it's in this years @zutaracoloringbook , go pick yourself up a copy! there's tons of beautiful pieces in it including this one, all for free!

under the cut, for anyone interested, im going to ramble a lot about the process of this one because i just have a lot of thoughts asdfghjk the tldr is: this is not at all how i expected this piece to look, i fell asleep working on it at one point which is just wild to me, and 'ooo pretty colors'

i've sat on this one for a little bit and im still not sure how i feel about it? i like it but it's also not at all how i expected the color for this piece to look asdfghj

i originally thought the palette would be darker but after printing the piece i realized, given the lines were not as dark as they would have been if they'd been drawn traditionally, that i'd drown out the lines with that color scheme.

i also made a lot of little mistakes ranging from using colors darker then i wanted for shading to at one point Literally Falling Asleep While Coloring With Black Marker, thus leaving a black spot on the page that I then had to work around.

the paper also was a double edged sword. i did not print on marker paper or artist paper, which usually is not an issue with me. i know most marker artists will strangle me for saying this, but i have never drawn on marker paper? like ever? i taught myself how to use marker on mixed media paper and i have rarely used marker paper since. i've just never felt a need? contrary to what people have said, i've never seen any like abnormal wear and tear on my markers doing this and i, personally, just accept that markers are going to bleed. it's not my enemy it's just part of the medium. it's what markers do. they're a wet medium even on paper made for wet mediums they will bleed out and often bleed through a little bit. i learned how to work around that and use it to my advantage. this paper however, the markers didn't bleed at all? and they dried so fast it made maintaining an even texture and blending like i normally do a challenge. it just didn't have a lot of give? HOWEVER the color pay off was CRAZY like the colors are so vivid and bright and rich. like, i made my own color chart for my markers on index cards and then i would often test the colors on scrap paper of the same paper to confirm what the colors going to look like but when i would use colors on the piece itself they were always darker, richer, brighter, and just all around way more vivid. which makes the piece very nice to look at, admittedly asdfghjk. so paper pros: fantastic color pay off like crazy color pay off, paper cons: I Don't Know How To Blend.

for anyone wondering why i didn't print on marker paper: firstly, i don't have any this size. secondly, marker paper tends to be pretty thick and not super malleable so i didn't think it'd be safe for my printer. likewise, i didn't think any of my other paper would be either. so i decided to do what i did last year which was use a fancy paper stock i had that was printer safe for my printer paper so it's not just regular thin computer paper.

some of these technical issues i blame on being out of practice, i haven't worked in marker for a minute and this piece involving such large scale blending was a bit ambitious especially on unfamiliar paper (learning how to blend with markers i find is just a lot of practice with your particular markers to know how they behave while also knowing your paper). but im also just confused because i feel like the paper behaved better when i used it last year and with my self portraits asdfghj im wondering if i just printed this on the wrong side? more testing is in order before i work on my next two pieces dfghjklfghjk

so, anyway, i might try to color this one again because i don't know how satisfied i am with it. like, i like it, but also it just doesn't feel correct. i might do it digitally or i might do it traditionally, we'll see. but im not going to try again until i finish the other two i need to color. i think this stems from the fact that i just feel like the palette was meant to be different then the one i ended up with so it just still feels incomplete to me. we'll see how i feel, though, when i finish the other two.

anyway, if anyone read all of that, thank you for coming to my ted talk.

For the animation I used a tutorial on animating in clip studio paint by Andrea Joan Cabral on tumblr @ayjaycabral which was SO helpful and also practiced with exercises from the youtube channel by Alex Grigg, Animation for Anyone which I totally recommend checking out if you want to animate but don't know how to start (like me)

Apologies if this has already been asked before, but what program do you use to make comic pages? Do you have any program recommendations for beginner comic creators who can't spend too much money on art programs?

I use paint tool sai and clip studio paint!

I always recommend Paint tool Sai for beginner artists, it is very intuitive and basic, it's a good program to learn on imo.

It's about $50 for a one-time purchase, no subscription. And you get a 30 day free trial before you buy, if you want to test it out. I will always advocate to pay for SAI if you can. It's created by a single developer, and I think that his product is worth supporting, I have used it for a decade and I still adore it.

Clip Studio Paint is also a very good program, one time buy at $54 for a basic license, or $237 for an EX license. CSP has a high learning curve to me though. It has taken me like 2 years to get the hang of it, and I still don't use it for everything. It has a LOT to offer though, I do not think you will never need another art program if you get CSP.

There are also free alternatives, Gimp2.0 and Firealpaca come to mind. Gimp is not as user friendly and beginners may get frustrated. and I have no experience with Firealpaca, but I hear good things.

I started on MSpaint and Gimp2.0, so I don't think there is any shame in using free programs if that's where your budget is. There are incredible things to be made in free programs. The first like 250 pages of The Recruit were made in mspaint / gimp.

hit the keep reading if you wanna read me rambling about 2012 Raph's traumas within the show, I'm not the best at writing so take that as you will.

I think out of all the 2012 ninja turtles Raph has the most 'wow this is fucked' centric episodes. (note i'm writing from the memory of watching the show as it released so its been a while.) But while Leo has the most fatal injuries, Donnie's injuries are more centered around his mind/head, and Mikey is just a jack of trades for getting hurt. I think the majority of Raph's 'injuries' are related too his overall too his phobias, ability too protect, and insecurities (tho that honestly falls under all four of the turtles ngl).

Its amazing how many times everything that makes Raph- Raph is used against him, from mutant roaches, his anger towards his brothers managing too overtake his love for them directly causing his best friend too attack his family, had a squirrel crawl into his stomach a experience mitosis, his mutagen drained and becoming a plant-dog thing, the brainworm, almost loosing his family a 100 different ways, that whole melt down in the trashcan where he hallucinates bugs, the bug planet. And that's all I can remember off the top of my head!

honestly typing just too type but Raph just like all of his bros have been through it and I think it should be acknowledged more.

I'm honestly rlly proud of this bc its the first thing I've created on clip studio paint and was kinda just my test run for the program. Messed around with a lot of brushes, I love the verity Procreate nor Paper have this much stuff to utilize. Also love that i can rotate and resize stuff without immediately loosing the initial quality (procreate).

“Clash of Immortals” / COI is an upcoming project I’m super excited about with Demon WWX and Angel LWJ. I use my own version of hell/heaven for this, allowing for lots of fun details and some creatures unique to my universe, including A-Yuan who is a “Garden of Eden” [not drawn yet].

Information i can share!

Demon WWX / Wei Wuxian - Demon type: A black-blue feathered “Captive” or “Fallen” - a type of demon caused by cutting an angel’s ascension short as they are being lifted into the heavens, caused by demons trying to prevent as many new angels from entering heaven as possible. This means originally he was supposed to become an angel, but his line was cut and he was dragged past hell’s gates, causing him to descend instead of ascend once he passed through the gate.

This leaves a nasty scar on his back from the hook used to pull him up [if ascended the hook will disappear harmlessly] and this is why they are also nicknamed "Hook Demons" as they will sometimes even go around with the hook still in their back, just filed down, because they are going through a vital area and can't be fully removed.

Angel LWJ / Lan Wangji - Nearly a white wing, shares a nearly identical wing color to LXC, His is white with minimal jade undertones; he has MANY piercings to compensate his abilities in order to prevent his body from tearing apart. He does however have a unique trait- two of his flight feathers [one on each side] are completely black [I will test this with his design so don't hold me to this]. After his descent heaven is a bit perplexed- they allow this type of movement but LWJ is a very important for heaven’s force of angels, as one of the most powerful.

Fun Facts ;]

When they see each other for the first time as angel/demon they bristle, [in my universe, angels and demons feel wrong when in each other's presence, even if they're very soft and sweet. It'd probably be a good mirror to how LWJ and WWX don't necessarily get along in the actual series when they first meet too.] but then it’s a cheery reunion- LWJ might be somewhat uncomfortable, but WWX tames the sensation more easily as he is nearly unrestrained in power.

Someone comes within 50 feet of A-Yuan and Wei Wuxian sends the person’s heart to their throat just by looking at them despite this being a bad habit he probably shouldn’t use around the "Garden of Eden."*

*original species invented which will be explained better in story, I don't wanna spoil too much

and then we have "BED" HABITS

WWX is aggressive as all hell with everyone else besides his kind [in hell anyway bc he doesn't like everyone's attitude] -not in an intimate way he wouldn't do anything with anyone else- but becomes tame with LWJ, it's like a switch gets flipped. LWJ is the growling demon in bed while WWX is the purring angel, despite their anatomy quite clearly showing otherwise; and let me tell u I love purring demons and growling angels

NO ONE believes him when LWJ says wwx isnt the aggressive one, thinking the demon is tainting their precious second jade despite wwx not having a choice about his demonhood. LWJ be like: we still husbands regardless of who's the more aggressive one anyway. Yes, I’ve just decided we’re still married no extra ceremony required.
