Okay, a late entry for the January posting meme... January 21 - what's one of your favorite fandom related memories? lyntergalactic
I have so many favorite memories, it’s very hard to pick one….. but it is Festivids Eve so I’m gonna talk about my excitement about this vid exchange. Cause it’s my favorite moment right now because I feel like I’m staying up late with milk and cookies waiting for Santa to arrive. I have so many great memories and VID RECS in this long post.
Festivids started in 2009 as a vid exchange for rare fandoms. Which was great because I think a lot of vidders really needed this so we could celebrate and get exposed to a whole bunch of new small and rare fandoms, unheard of media and literary sources that hadn't been really been vidded before.
Each year there’s a guest-the-vidder post, and @bingeling has been great about organizing live watches on discord. Sometimes I miss a few vids here and there during the initial weekend of go-live because it’s SO MANY VIDS, but then I always catch people’s recs or vid posts in the following weeks.
It’s just a joy to keep finding new things that I never realized I wanted and needed in my life because there’s so many interesting media and books out there to make vids for and people’s imaginations and technical skills continue to blow my mind.
Way back in 2009 when I signed up for the very first exchange I got assigned to Sol-se and matched up on the source/fandom that I had introduced her to: Little Mosque on the Prairie. We literally spent weeks months and years talking about Little Mosque on the Prairie, being a fandom of two. AO3 was in its early days yet so there wasn’t even any fic, okay. So when I got matched up, made the vid, the guest the vidder post happened and everyone guessed it was me. Everyone likes to claim that they made all the vids so I said that I indeed did make it, of course I did. Yet I was still able to cast doubt in Sol-se’s mind about whether or not I had made it because?? Who knew, maybe there was someone else who happened to get into the show and make an awesome vid for it. It was very fun hypothesizing with her in DMs about who could have made the vid if it wasn’t in fact me. It all comes back to love.
The first vid I made for Festivids in 2009: All For Swinging You Around.
Little Mosque on the Prairie. Ensemble. LOVE. Y’all I had bought Little Mosque DVDs through the CBC website back in the day and was still learning how to rip things. Aspect ratios. Scan lines. It was a TIME I do not miss. Though I do still have the DVDs and probably could rip them better now.
My other favorite memories from festivids is (aside from all of the vids) are the vids made for ME over the years!
2009 When You’re Strange by colls, a Sanctuary vid featuring music by Echo and the Bunnyman. A++ song choice and Amanda Tapping’s face will always inspire me. Sanctuary did so much with so little and this is such a great vid for a fantastic lil’ genre Canadian show.
2012 Meant to Fly by e-transitions. This is a Modern Family vid focusing on Manny, Gloria and Jay who were my favorite of the extended family on that show. Manny in particular is my favorite! This is Nicki Minaj’s Starships and it’s super sweet and endearing look at family coming together and reaching new heights together. And shenanigans. All of my favorites things.
2013 Fame by chaila (also on tumblr here). This is a vid for the show Transparent and focuses on Maura. Do you know what it’s like to get a gift from someene whose fanworks you have loved and admired for years?? I was so blown away by the cover chaila found for this vid. Mree’s vocals are so evocative and still has this powerful determination in the vocals. It’s really, incredibly moving. I was so lucky to receive a gift like this.
2015 Simple Machine by sol-se. This is for a 2014 webseries called Caper which I can’t even remember how I found. I think I was on an Amy Berg kick and was trying to watch everything she’s written for. The vid focuses on Penny who is an inventor who created a super suit and of course a white dude came along and tried to take credit for all of her inventions and hero’ing, so that’s what this vid follows. The show was incredibly dorky and sweet. Superhero fanfic, low-budget staffed with people who were able to call in a lot of favors for cameos along the way. The show also has Beth Riesfgraf and Harry Shrum, too! Along with a few others.
And of course Solvi delighted in being able to make me a vid for ANOTHER SHOW where we were a fandom of two. :D the vid is great and I have a strong affinity for Guster’s music because I listened to so many of sdwolfpup’s vids with that music when I first started vidding.
2019 I GOT SIX VIDS in 2019. I pretty much cried when go-live happened because??? How??? I guess I just had really appealing requests that year. So let me tell you about them.
Little Lion Leo by turquoisetumult. This is for the AMC version of Humans which is a parallel present/scifi show based on the Swedish version of the show Äkta människor. I had actually vidded Leo for the Swedish version but I really really adored Colin Morgan’s portrayal of Leo Elster. Mumford and Sons is such a mainstay in vidding circles and for good reason: the musicality is so gripping and the vocals area always so intense and lovely. That means it’s perfect for Leo and his angst and pain. THE BLOOD! The feelings. Trying to survive with his synth family in a world that wants to end them.
I just rewatched the vid and I immediately want to rewatch the show now, omg. Gemma Chan was extraordinary in the show and the show had a fantastic approach to discussing the the ethics and actual legal standing of artificial humans that I hadn’t other shows touch upon that well.
Raising Hell by bingeling which is a vid for the movie Ready or Not which was one of my favorite movies from 2019. Samara Weaving and that wedding dress getting progressively more fucked up throughout the film as she fucks up the that shitty family?? Kill the bad rich people, those fuckers.Beautiful. Cathartic. This is on top of the well-known fact that I fucking love Kesha’s music (I’ve vidded Kesha 9 times since 2010). Bingeling’s editing here is punchy as hell and this SONG!!!!!!! It makes me crack the fuck up, especially with the lyrics at 1:49. It’s perfect. My heart. My heart. Kesha! Everyone is trying to murder her and she murders them instead. Badass woman with a wedding dress, bandolier and sneakers.
Pity Party by winterevanesce. This is also for Ready or Not. Phenomenal song choice. I have no idea who the artist is and never heard of her before but that doesn’t matter. This song was made for this vid. The editing on this vid is orgasmic. I literally am slack-jawed each time I watch this vid. I cannot emphasize that enough. I love it when people know exactly what I want and need in my vidding soul.
The Middle by turquoisetumult. This is a Fleabag vid! Featuring Fleabag and Fleabag/Priest. It’s a poignant cover of the song, too! It’s so sweet and makes me ache so much for Fleabag because heyooo, shit is hard, esp when you tend to fuck things up along the way. I love how this vid makes want her to do better and have better things in her life. That hope! So good.
When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? By starlady. Star Trek Discovery, Mirror Philippa and Michael. This is to Billie Eilish’s song “Bury a Friend” which I had never heard before but it is dark. It is sexy. The tone of the song and the synth-y beats and clicks drive me up the wall with the editing in the vid. Philippa’s sinister competence. That confidence. Starlady and I go way, way back and of course she could make me something that hits ALL OF MY FUCKING BUTTONS. I have long been vocal about how much I love Star Trek and women. And villain women and anti-heroes. Hhhhhnngh. Dark sexy vid of my Empress.
You Should See Me in a Crown, by AurumCalendula. Star Trek Discovery, Mirror Philippa. TO BILLIE EILISH. Because Billie Eilish's music screams Philippa! lmao. Everybody knows exactly what my fucking type is and I AM HERE FOR IT FOREVER. This vid features more of the Mirrorverse episodes and Philippa and HHHHNNGHHHHH. I am so loved by being seen because y’all know me so well. Aurum’s editing always has me glued to the screen. I am also here for Philippa’s face, oh my god. NOTE: Click on the dropbox link in the end notes to stream it. Aurum’s got all their videos private while dealing with some copyright strikes on their account (ugh YouTube).
Those are just the vids made for me. There are many more vids that I have recced for festivids over the years and so much more to come!
The 2023 Festivids Collection currently has 137 fanvids and 111 fandoms right now. A bounty!! Barbie vid! Bottoms1 Cycling RPF?! Vids for books! Hong Kong action films! Janelle Monae and musicals. And more omg.
Festivids. Featuring lots of great fannish memories and great vids. Highly recommend. It's also been a great way for people getting into vidding to make their first vid, too! I love this exchange.
#i haven't participated since 2019 because i have absolutely only wanted to vid the witcher netflix and games the last few years lol#i still have 3 witcher vids planned for the upcoming year and probably more after that. also need to revisit vidding the games#January posting meme#january posting meme 2024#festivids#vids#fanvids#vidding#viddingdora#squeedora#fan vids#vid rec

My old Buffy fanvid!
I was just looking over the very few videos I have posted on YouTube and I found this from 12 years ago! I thought it had been copyright struck and removed, but I'm glad it's still up there as I don't have my own copy any longer, I lost it when my old laptop died.
This is the only fan vid I've ever made. I've had ideas for others (many recently for Good Omens related ones!) but then I remember what a pain in the arse this was and leave it to others to do them 😁
I'm old enough to have watched and been obsessed by Buffy way back when it was first on TV (I was actually born the same year Buffy was in the show, 1981), but when I made this I'd just re-watched all 7 series in full for the first time since my teens and for a while my fixation returned in full force.
Spike was always my favourite character, and this song by My Dying Bride which I was listening to a lot at the time seemed to fit with his story arc really well (lyrics below the video).
Apologies for the poor quality compared with a lot of edits you see today, all clips were ripped from my DVD collection so they're pretty far from being high definition! Still, I'm quite proud of it, I worked really hard to time all the cuts with the music and fit the lyrics around the clips I chose.
youtube
Bring Me Victory (lyrics)
Is there anything left Left of me to save? My life is like a carnival My body a sunken grave
It's what I have to do To distance me from you There's a suffering inside And my veins are showing through
A man become a child Are you happy with your prize With haunted looks of fear I step away from your side
My mind a fractured ruin The crushing of my soul It is time to spread my wings To fill this empty hole
It has now begun The forces under me Will conquer all before And bring me to my victory
I've seen that man before Down from the fall And now standing tall I've seen this I have been this And now I am my own man
No more misery Look outside and see What are you waiting for? Pick yourself up Get up off the floor!

happy 3 year anniversary to the most depressing half-finished Sufjan MASH vid which I've tried to finish before the past 3 Fourth of Julys. Created on a 2005 iMac, ripped from DVDs from like 2004 with a 2008 copy of Final Cut Pro that I couldn't even get to export, so I filmed my reflective screen with my phone during a windstorm. this is probably all anyone will ever get. thank you, thank you.

6/11-12/24
tuesday - wednesday
the man came and sprayed
and we came home to see many dead and dying roaches on the ground, a grotesque hope but i hope we see more dying soon.
i did go to an urgent care today for my throat, they said nothing was wrong... so my gf wasted money on me. i feel bad about that. i hope i can sleep tonight without any pain.
up too late because i worked too much on the cover art stuff,, hope that is done soon. i might spend all of tomorrow doing that.
pretty shortly a friend from out of town will be here, i hope by then i am not ill, not like this, at least.
the camera things also came today, i won't post any vids from the handycam but here are some frames i pulled out of it, very fond of the interlacing stuff, i imagine this is what some people i see online do for photos, the video cam makes me think one thing i could do for taking pics for the cover art is instead stick it somewhere where i like it, pose a bunch over a few minutes, and then rip out the frames and select the best one for the cover art. that seems prudent, i might also try and get some actual pix taken.
here are the frames i ripped testing, of myself:
this last one i really like, it's me messing with the night vision light while having a light on in the room still. very crazy look imo.
the psp camera came, here's some pics i took with that:
my little shrine area
the apartment a mess because we still had to get everything situated then, in a very funny filter.
i really like the filters on the camera, they're almost too horrible to use but that makes them artistically interesting, i can maybe figure something out with them? there's a toy camera setting which is interesting to me.
i made a dumb mistake with the video camera, i didn't realize it was only coming with a dvd-r, not rw or +rw, so it's not a rewritable disc, so i finalized it thinking i could undo that,.. but i cannot.. soo... unfortunate. i had to buy some other discs cuz of that, i have 4 dvd-rws coming on the way (i think 2 reg and 2 +rw) which is a pointless distinction as far as i can gather but maybe they look different or behave different? weird stuff if you ask me. but it's worth it. i also need to get an sd card loaded into it so i can take regular photos with it. that seems rather fun, #imo.
anyway, i really must sleep now. things are in progress, now i'm getting funny ideas for music vids and stuff, exciting stuff there... yeay....
so

Embedded YouTube version, as Tumblr chopped the end of the vid off
youtube
I was really nervous about sharing this. In a strange way, it felt way more personal than any of the writing I've put up on ao3. Partly because of the song choice. Partly because of the sheer amount of work I poured into it. I know synthpop is not to everyone's taste... (neither is Inside No. 9, ha!) But I'd always loved the song's mixture of catchy pop melody with horrible lyrics. I was listening to it and the Trolley Problem parallels clicked into place (One last endless ride / I soak your head in gasoline / You won't come home tonight /It will look like suicide) and well, once the idea had wormed into my brain I couldn't stop thinking about it. So, fun fact, The Trolley Problem is filmed in 2:1 aspect ratio. This gives it a more cinematic quality than the more common 16:9 ratio used for HDTV. I made this video 16:9, and scaled up the source footage I had. This meant I could crop out the BBC watermark (having lost access to my DVD rips when my external HDD died) and could also do some tweaks with framing/scaling across different cuts. Rather than lift scenes wholesale, I made cuts on the timeline each time there was a change of shot/angle so that I could tweak the timings or swap out footage where needed. I wanted to keep to the rhythm of the song without being a slave to beatmatching, which I think I've managed. Drew's exasperated hands at 1'54", Blake on the crescendo at 2'06" and the kick on the instrumental at 2'56" were moments where I was nudging the footage one frame at a time to get the rhythm right and I'm happy with how they've turned out. It was also important for me to match the visuals with the lyrics, and it makes me happy when people pick up on that. I won't blather on too much more. The chorus from 1'14"-1'35" is probably the strongest example of that, with the intercutting of Drew-seeing-Robbie/Blake-hearing-Ellie. "Tell your mom you won't come home tonight".
I massively appreciate anyone who's taken the time to watch/like/share this video 🖤🖤🖤
Made a thing... Sorry it's quite long (4min39s), I wasn't going to do the whole song and then I did the whole song 🙃 YouTube version if I don't get hit by a copyright claim.

For the vidding ask meme, 12!
12 Most underrated vid that you wished had gotten more views?
Gonna go with another blast from my past, my 2009 festivid All For Swinging You Around for the Canadian show Little Mosque on the Prairie. A show I was so obsessed with (it's so cute and wholesome and LOVELY). I could not find it online so I ordered the DVDs directly from the CBC shop and ripped them for the vid. (Some of the episodes ripped so poorly, I was not very good with MacHatcha and MacTheRipper back in the day, aspect ratios waaagh). But I really really love this vid. All my love! All my joy! For the community of Mercy!! Click the vid based on my rec and love, but keep watching until you see an imam and an anglican priest jogging and wearing purple pinnies that say "The God Squad." I highly recommend this show for wholesome comedy humor love.

[Download] ALIVE Movie: SOARA -Let It Be- English Subtitles
The wait is over! This was my first time subbing a movie all by myself~ Thank you so much to @ryota-kunstranslations for proofreading and helping catch the fast, mumbling lines lol.
This took a little longer to finish than I had hoped since life got in the way, and even with the pandemic I couldn’t wfh. By the time I got home I’d be too mentally drained to sit and translate stuff. Little by little, I managed to finally finish and here we are~
Link to the subtitle file is below the cut. There’s also a link to a copy of the movie hardsubbed which I ripped from my own DVD in case you don’t have the video file yourself! With things not quite back to normal in the world, I hope I can spread some positivity and ease boredom. (Just please do not reupload the video, thank u)

Hi I am the translation seeking anon ☺. Thank you for the reply and link 🤗. Wow they have 300 GB data. Feel like fainting. So are people translating whole 300 GB in English? Heard transcription has been done in chinese in weib/o.
Hi Anon! I can imagine that yes, 300 GB is possible. There’s been at least a thousand small BTS clips released over the months since it started around Aug/Sept ‘20 from various fan sites, and if the vids are HD, then that also contributes to a higher file size even if it’s just 1-2 minutes long. I didn’t purchase any of the sets, primarily because, and don’t laugh please, I don’t have a DVD player for my TV and for my laptops at home since everything is on the cloud. I also find it too troublesome to rip the DVD and do the conversion.
For the 300 GB, a full translation in English has already been done from the transcript that’s been released, authorized by the OP. You can check the link here
My weekend plans - finish the 300 GB and the assistant fanfics, while imagining myself in this shop
Happy weekend!

🌺If you get this, answer with 3 random facts about yourself and send it to the last 7 blogs in your notifications, anonymously, or not! Let's get to know the person behind the blog!
Ooo, thanks, hon! :D
1. I have more shows that I fully intend to watch than I can ever possibly watch. I add more shows to that all of the time. :\
2. I occasionally get vid ideas that I can see SO CLEARLY but I know I could never pull off. Weirdly, sometimes it’s for things I don’t even ship. This popped to mind because a song just came up that I will forever associate with a Bella/Carlisle vid that I honestly don’t plan ever on making, yet can still see in my mind as I listen to the song, almost like I already HAVE made it, lol! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (Maybe it was made by an Ais on a different Earth out in the multiverse? :P )
3. And speaking of vidding, I just bought an entire older TV series off of ebay (for $6, yo... \o/) because something reminded me of it, then I wasted spent about an hour scrounging Youtube for vids for the show and not finding very many and then I remembered how I actually used to use a double decked VCR to make cut down versions of each episode because I was wearing out my tapes speeding through to my favorite scenes. A precursor to vidding! \o/ Anyway, here’s a hint of my most favoritey character from this show, who you know is TOTALLY getting a vid whenever I get the DVDs and get them ripped:
Naturally, he’s a baaaaaad guy. Sorta. He’s seriously broken but he has his good moments, too. He’s suuuuuuper in love with the lead character, which won me over immediately, if not sooner. And he totally should’ve had a proper redemption arc. *pouty face* Seriously, if I’d been on the Internet in those days, I would’ve been vidding him, writing him, calling him my fandom boyfriend and fangirling him for aaages. So, does anybody know who he is? ;)
Here’s another clue: this is what he generally looked like on the show:
♥♥♥
#3 random facts#about me#if you've ever watched this show#let me know#i'm really interested to see if anybody still remembers it from almost 20 years ago#(it did reruns for a while i'm pretty sure so even if you're too young to have watched it live you still *might* have seen it)#inquiring minds want to know!#;)

Stay-at-home journal 2/27/21
Yesterday:
Worked, got help and solved two crises
Order chinese food and branched out and got something different (but still got rangoon bc what can i say, im a slut for cream cheese)
Watched yt w partner
Laid in bed and just chilled out watching gardening and home improvement vids until i fell asleep
Today:
Try to install linux on the old comp
Buy paint for the bathroom bc i keep dragging my feet abt it
Idk if we're moving bushes bc it rained last night and the ground might be too soggy
Order a jigsaw bc im tired of not having one
Watched my partner play more of the medium
Free space:
So whats funny abt the medium is that our irl friend group gets on discord to watch my partner play games every Saturday, but i dont join in. Idk i just dont feel like socializing. So usually i go do something else. But this time its a game i care abt (bloober team ilu, you'll always have a place in my heart), so i want to watch. So hes got headphones on talking to them but they cant hear me, and i cant hear them. But i can hear him laughing and responding. They know im hanging out, so sometimes one of them will pass a message to me or ask a question, and bob will relay it to me. HE IS THE MEDIUM. lmao when he tells them my response he goes "i...i think im getting a message from the other side! Yes! I can hear it... She says... 'lol youre an idiot' " 😂
Its prob just the fact that the suns coming up earlier and its finally warming up, but i want to experiment w more creative projects. So i rly am going to buy that jigsaw. And some blades. And some wood. Probably nails and wood glue too. Might need ear plugs. I also want an engraving pen just bc why not. Theyre surprisingly cheap. Maybe you get what you pay for idk. Im going to try to make little decorations. And if im rly cool i can make some miniature things. No promises on that tho bc it sounds hard.
I dreamt a bunch but i remember one part was in my kitchen back home and i got up on the counter and could jump to the table, jump to the doorway and grab the molding, then jump to another doorway, then go up some stairs. Some serious floor-is-lava parkour. Another part of the dream i had painted the room at the top of the stairs so it was a variety of scenes all the way around. Rich colors and landscapes. Almost flowing. Some of it sparkly.
Well time to get up and figure out how to put linux on a thumbdrive so i can boot from it and install to the comp i formatted. Im a little worried some areas of the disk got corrupted, but i thiiiink i did the format that marks those as bad sectors?? Honestly not sure. But ill give it a shot since this is the only computer we have that actually has a dvd drive and id like to rip that stupid mother goose movie. There are versions of it on yt but iirc they're reaaally low quality. Anyway, if i get this figured out im gonna see if some friends want to stream it w me.

The Intel i5 CPU is considered Intel’s mainstream processor and alongside the rest of the 10th generation CPUs, Intel is launching the Core i5-10600k. The i5-10600k CPU is set to replace the 9th generation i5-9600k CPU. The i5-10600k gets a bump in the base clock as compared to the i5-9600k up from 3.7 GHz on the 9600k to 4.1 GHz on the i5-10600k. The turbo boost clock gets a frequency increase as well up from 4.6 GHz to 4.8 GHz on a single core and 4.5 GHz as an all-core boost. Unlike the i9 7 i7 counterparts, official non-XMP memory support stays at DDR4-2666. The i5 also misses out on Intel’s new Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB)that allows the CPU to boost above specified frequency if the conditions are just right. TVB is only available on the new 10th gen i9 CPUs. A new socket is needed for the 10th gen CPUs and Intel is also launching their Z490 chipset along with motherboard manufacturers launching a ton of new motherboards. However, there are some differences under the hood that should enable the i5-10600k to stretch its legs a bit and maintain good performance at a reasonable price level.

One of the biggest additions to the i5 line up is the addition of HyperThreading. Now all Intel CPUs use Hyperthreading except for the Celeron processors. This means the i9 series is 10 cores/20 threads, the i7 series is 8 cores/16 threads, the i5 series is 6 cores/12 threads, and the i3 series is 4 cores/8 threads. The Pentium CPUs are 2 cores/4 threads.

The new 10th Gen CPUs have a thinner die and a thicker IHS. This should facilitate better heat transfer between the CPU and the cooler.
While not a brand new architecture, the 10th gen Intel CPUs, at least on paper, should bring more performance to the table. Keep in mind, that Intel is still using a Skylake derived architecture. There’s nothing wrong with that as long as they can continue to increase performance and keep moving the ball forward.
[section_title title=The Intel Core i5-10600k CPU]
The Intel Core i5-10600k CPU
Intel sent us the new 10th Gen Core CPUs in a special media kit. The retail packaging will look very different.
The box opens up revealing a translucent blue plastic sheet with Intel’s logo right in the center. Under the blue plastic insert is the CPUs in this case, we were sent the i9-10900k and the i5-10600k CPUs. This review will focus on the i5-10600k CPU.
#gallery-0-36 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-36 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-36 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-36 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The 10th gen i5 is contained inside a small box. Inside, the CPU is encased in a standard CPU blister pack.
#gallery-0-37 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-37 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-37 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-37 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Physically, there’s virtually no difference in the IHS between the 10th gen and older gen CPUs. However, a new socket is needed for the 10th gen CPUs which means you’ll also need a new motherboard. Along with the new CPU launches, Intel is launching the Z490 chipset, and motherboard manufactures have a slew of motherboards across almost all price ranges.

System settings –
Windows was set to High Performance in the power management settings in Windows.
Motherboard settings for the non-overclocked tests were reset to factory defaults and only the XMP for the G.Skill RAM was enabled. Everything else in the BIOS was left at the factory defaults for the stock tests.
Cooling
All my test benches are fitted with a custom loop featuring an EKWB Coolstream PE 360 mm radiator, EKWB Vardar fans x3, EKWB Velocity waterblock for both Intel and AMD, as well as an EKWB XRES 140 REVO D5 filled with distilled water. The motherboard settings were left to their stock configurations.
Let the battle of the 6-core CPUs begin!
Testing and Performance
AIDA64 ENGINEER
AIDA64 has a set of several 64-bit benchmarks to measure how fast the computer performs various data processing tasks and mathematical calculations. Multi-threaded memory and cache benchmarks are available to analyze system RAM bandwidth and latency. Benchmark pages of AIDA64 Extreme provide several methods to measure system performance. These benchmarks are synthetic, so their results show only the theoretical maximum performance of the system. The AIDA64 suite has various benchmarks for CPU, FPU, GPU, storage, and memory testing.
#gallery-0-39 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-39 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-39 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-39 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
As you can see, the i5-10600k lags slightly behind the rest of the CPUs here. I wasn’t sure exactly why until a little later on in the testing process. When I run benchmarks, I run each test 3 times, then average the result together.
Here’s where I started to think the issue with performance between the CPU is caused. As you can see, the memory performance of the i5-10600 lags in the read and copy tests of all the CPUs even the older 8700k. The difference is not small either. When I first started putting the results together, I went back and re-tested. I also check to make sure I was in Dual Channel mode. Finally, I tested the memory on another test bench and the memory results on that PC were as expected.

Intel Core i5-10600k Benchmarks Continued
Cinebench R20
Cinebench is a real-world cross-platform test suite that evaluates your computer’s hardware capabilities. Improvements to Cinebench Release 20 reflect the overall advancements to CPU and rendering technology in recent years, providing a more accurate measurement of Cinema 4D’s ability to take advantage of multiple CPU cores and modern processor features available to the average user.
In Cinebench, the Core i5-10600k performs well against the other 6-core CPUs. The multi-core test shows it lagging ever so slightly behind the AMD CPUs and pretty much on equal footing with the older 8700k.
POV-Ray 3.7
The Persistence of Vision Ray Tracer, or POV-Ray, is a ray-tracing program that generates images from a text-based scene description and is available for a variety of computer platforms. It was originally based on DKBTrace, written by David Kirk Buck and Aaron A. Collins for the Amiga computers. There are also influences from the earlier Polyray[6] raytracer contributed by its author Alexander Enzmann. POV-Ray is free and open-source software with the source code available under the AGPLv3.
POV-Ray shows that AMD is slightly better when it comes to multi-core rendering whereas Intel’s i5-10600k edges out the rest in the single-core test.
[section_title title=Multimedia, Compression, Synthetic, and Gaming]
Multimedia, Compression, Synthetic, and Gaming
Handbrake
HandBrake is a free and open-source video transcoder, originally developed in 2003 by Eric Petit to make ripping a film from a DVD to a data storage device easier. Essentially, it can convert video to almost any modern format. HandBrake is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The workload video file is a file that I’ve used for years called Sintel. It is a 1.09-gigabyte file that is full HD. I used the Apple 240p preset for this test.
7-Zip
The 7-zip benchmark shows a rating in MIPS (million instructions per second). The rating value is calculated from the measured speed, and it is normalized with the results of Intel Core 2 CPU with multi-threading option switched off. So, if you have a modern CPU from Intel or AMD, rating values in single-thread mode must be close to real CPU frequency. There are two tests, compression with LZMA method and decompression with LZMA method. Once the total passes reach 100, the score is taken. 7-Zip gives the resulting score for decompressing, compressing, and an overall score.
PCMark
PCMark 10 is a system benchmark for Windows PCs that focuses on common tasks performed in the office. PCMark 10 offers a variety of workloads categorized into four groups. The Essentials group includes web browsing, video conferencing, and app start-up time. The Productivity group includes tests based on spreadsheets and writing. The Digital Content Creation group includes photo editing, video editing, and a rendering and visualization test. The final group, Gaming, includes tests for real-time graphics and physics. It has three different benchmarks, PCMark 10, PCMark 10 Express, and PCMark 10 Extended.
How much closer can you get? All the tested systems are extremely close together. The individual tests swap back and forth as far as lead goes between the Intel i5-10600k and the AMD Ryzen 5 3600x.
3DMARK
3DMark is a computer benchmarking tool created and developed by Futuremark used to determine the performance of a computer’s 3D graphic rendering and CPU workload processing capabilities. It does this through a series of graphics and physics and or CPU tests.
#gallery-0-40 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-40 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-40 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-40 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Firestrike and Timespy are a battle between the CPUs. Intel and AMD Both have a great showing in this 6-core shootout.
Gaming
For gaming, I chose to mix it up a little bit from what we’ve done in the past. Most games we test are first-person shooters, so I chose to throw a flight simulator in the mix. Xplane 11 depends heavily on single-thread performance, even more so than newer modern games.
While not a huge difference in performance, Intel still leads in the gaming category. Intel leads in every game I tested.
[section_title title= Overclocking]
Overclocking
First, let’s start with the stock settings.
These charts were taking running POV-RAY tests. Starting we’ll look at single-core performance. As you can see during the tests, the i5-10600k hits 5.8GHz, and the load bounces around to different cores. Temperatures remained below 00°C with a few peeks up to about 49°C.
#gallery-0-41 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-41 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-41 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-41 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Single-Core Stock Clock Speed
Single Core Stock Temperature
The multi-core test was run next, again at all stock speeds. As you can see, clock speeds leveled out around 4.5 GHz. The CPU temperature was good here too as temperatures hovered around the 56°C mark.
#gallery-0-42 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-42 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-42 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-42 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Multi-core Stock Clock Speed
Multi-core Stock Temperature
Next, I pushed the multiplier up to 52 and added a slight bit of voltage so the system could remain stable at 5.2 GHz on all cores. This is a 700 MHz overclock on the i5-10600k.
Again, let’s look at the single-core clock speed and temperatures 1st. The clock speed is stable at 5.2 GHz and for the most part core temperatures stayed below 60° c with a few spikes of about 61°c.
#gallery-0-43 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-43 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-43 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-43 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Single-Core @ 5.2 Clock Speed
Single-Core @ 5.2 Temperature
The multi-core test shows the clock speed locked at 5.2 GHz. To reach 5.2 GHz, I did have to bump the voltage up a little bit and the running voltage as reported by the software was 1.389v during the test. Temperatures were still good although a little higher than I initially expected. Temperatures hovered around the 80°c mark with a few peeks up to 81°c.
#gallery-0-44 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-44 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-44 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-44 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Multi-Core @ 5.2 GHz Clock Speed
Multi-Core @ 5.2 GHz Temperature
Keep in mind that my test benches use a 360mm custom loop for cooling. My review sample did not come with a cooler.
#gallery-0-45 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-45 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-45 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-45 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Performance gains in Aida64 get a pretty good boost. However, I think that the memory performance issue that I saw in the stock tests happen to be holding back the performance in this test.
Cinebench R20 showed a decent gain as the multi-core test gained 486 points and the single-core test gained 40 points.
POV-Ray gets a good boost in performance as well.
From a gaming standpoint, I re-benchmarked all the gaming tests that I do in CPUs.
Almost all the games saw an increase in frames per second except for Ghost Recon Wildlands. Xplane which thrives on fast single-core CPUs, gained 15 FPS, Shadow of the Tomb Raider gained 8 FPS, Farcry New Dawn gained 8 FPS, and Assassin’s Creed gained about 4.
After looking at the chart above, I decided to put all the upper-end CPUs that I have in one chart.
What’s really surprising is how well the i5-10600 CPU performs against the stock i9-10900. If this shows anything it is that games still like fast cores vs many slower cores. AMD has the core advantage in the upper end of the CPU chart and AMD has the core advantage. Frequency wins, plain and simple.
[section_title title=Conclusion and Final Thoughts]
Conclusion and Final Thoughts
The Intel Core i5-10600k retains it’s six-cores from the previous generation and also adds Hyperthreading giving the CPU a total of 12 threads. The i5-10600k gets a small boost in clock speed as well. Yet, much of the CPU remains the same as the previous generation. Like I said in the i9-10900k review, Intel is using a core design derived from Skylake which was launched in 2015. While on the top end of the CPU market, it doesn’t appear to be much left under the hood, the i5-10600k shows otherwise and I was able to get what I think is a decent overclock out of it without much work or tweaking around in the BIOS.
The 6-core CPUs that are currently on the market perform within a small margin of each other and outside of very specific benchmarks, I highly doubt anyone would “feel” or know the difference between them. Intel’s offering of a 6-core/12-thread CPU puts it squarely in competition with the AMD Ryzen 5 3600x. My benchmark experience with both CPUs shows that there is a lead advantage here and there and that advantage swaps from Intel to AMD and back and forth. I really appreciate that there is stiff competition in this particular market. Not everyone runs 8, 10, or 12 core CPUs. Intel and AMD both market their 6-core CPUs as mainstream.
Overclocking the Intel CPUs is so much easier than AMD. Specifically, I can’t get AMD’s CPUs to overclock much, if at all. Intel’s CPUs, on the other hand, seem to take overclocking in stride. With my test bench set up, I was able to gain 700 MHz to 5.2 GHz on all cores vs. 4.5 GHz in stock trim. Even single-core clock speeds peaked at 4.8 GHz and I was able to exceed that by 400 Mhz. Throw in good memory and GPU overclock and you’ll have a system that’s going to be really tough to beat.
Overall, I’m more impressed with the i5-10600k than I am with the i9-10900k. I’m not saying that the i9-10900k CPU is bad. I just feel that for the price as well as the performance and overclocking of the i5-10600k is a better bang for the buck. However, there are a few things to consider, if you’re going to migrate to 10th gen, a new motherboard will be required, so there’s added cost there. Also, my cooling system on my test benches utilizes custom loop components. Thankfully, the waterblock fits the new motherboard socket but, if you’re new to water cooling, there will be added cost there too. At the time of the review, no retailers have listed the pricing of the i5-10600k however, Intel says their RCP (Recommended Customer Price) at $262. Keep in mind this price is for retailers buying in quantities of 1000 chips. More likely we’ll see the i5-10600k retail for $300 or more. At the time of this review the AMD Ryzen 5 3600x on sale for $204. However, with a decent overclock the i5-10600k reaches the gaming performance of the i9-10900k. Overall, the i5-10600k was just a little more impressive in terms of performance and overclockability.
