One of my favorite Danvers solos in English! Yeah, I kept the title, but hopefully the rest is different enough. I changed some things for singability, but mostly this is straightforward. Honestly, I'm even shocked I managed to sing this.

Chy! I found something out recently and I figured it might help cheer you up!

So, apparently Tom Kenny has a band (Tom Kenny and the Hi-Seas) and they do a lot of golden oldies type music (think doo-wop and sock hop kinda vibes, with some big band swing elements thrown in!) and I got the idea of Sponge.bob and Coraline going out dancing together and he’s just crooning and singing to her the whole time. :3c

Most of the songs I have on there can fall into a few categories, there's a lot of stuff so let's see if I can list them out, uhhh...

Songs that reflect his mental state and the way the acts, why he does things, what he's actually thinking underneath, things like that. (Some examples of those I'd say are like, My ugly, Puppet loosely strung, Noel's lament, The view from halfway down, One big beautiful sound, and many others that I can't list or else we'll be here all day.) Most of those songs end up being from musicals, because musical songs are really meant for showing character and that works great for my purposes. Also they're quite jazzy and swing-y for lack of a better term, which I think it fits him pretty well!

Pining and breakup songs, because holy shit look at him. You cannot tell me this man hasn't had like, so many people that he pines for or had a crush on at some point. *Slaps trunk of car* this bad boy can fit so many unrequited crushes in him. RM to me is the kind of guy that gets crushes very easily and very fast, and the worst thing is they're pretty genuine! He's just, terrible at commitment and honestly uses romance to not have to think about the parts of his life that he doesn't want, so he puts all his self worth into romance specifically. I'm going to squish him.

Songs that just generally fit his vibes to me tbh? I have at least a few instrumentals in there, and they give me him thoughts so I put them in. It's fun to imagine him being stupid and goofy and dancing tango (I still wanna animate that someday)

Sad ass songs because yeah. These fit in the first category, but they also deserve their own category because there's just, too many of them. HE DOESN'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT HIS EMOTIONS, BUT HE HAS SO MANY OF THEM. God please let him actually be genuine and open up God please.

Sometimes shitpost songs that I think are funny and yet they still fit him, like blonde boyz and red flags. It's funny idk what to tell you. I don't have too many of those on there but I am accepting more because they make my day.

Songs that make me think of animatics and scenes!! These also go for a lot of musical songs, but also JHARIAH WHEN I CATCH YOU JHARIAH. Usually these make me sad!

Usually, a song will definitely fit these categories, but it's also very VERY common that I will just, grab a song and streeeecth it meaning wise so it can fit in his playlist because I already liked that song before and I like my blorbo being associated with one of my favorite songs. There are so many of those in there.

And I think that's it? I might've missed some category, but that's fine. I can also definitely go into specific detail about each and every song on that playlist if asked but I will not do that on this post because that would be SO MANY WORDS. Indulge me someday perhaps however, if you dare.

Quincy Jones

Musician, producer and arranger who had global hits with Michael Jackson, was the first black composer to find acceptance in Hollywood and won 28 Grammys

From the 1980s onwards, Quincy Jones, who has died aged 91, was best known for his production and arranging work with Michael Jackson, not least because his efforts on Jackson’s album Thriller helped make it one of the bestselling albums in pop history. But the superstar glare surrounding his work with Jackson tended to conceal the fact that there were many more layers to Jones’s abilities.

He worked with jazz stars such as Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie, became a friend and collaborator of Frank Sinatra, and developed a flourishing career as a composer of soundtracks for film and TV. He enjoyed success under his own name in styles ranging from big-band jazz and swing to pop, soul and funk. He became an influential music business executive, a successful entrepreneur in film and TV production and launched the music magazine VIBE.

He was born in Chicago, the son of Quincy Jones Sr, a carpenter and semi-pro baseball player, and his wife, Sarah (nee Wells), a building manager. His parents divorced, Quincy Sr remarried, and the family moved to Bremerton, Washington, during the second world war, then to Seattle. Quincy Jr began playing the trumpet and singing in a gospel quartet at the age of 12, and when he met up with the teenaged Ray Charles, also based in the Seattle area, Charles encouraged him to take an interest in arranging. A course at the Berklee College of Music in Boston set Jones up for his first professional job, in 1951, with the bandleader Lionel Hampton.

His experiences on the road with the Hampton band were an eye-opener. “You couldn’t stay in white hotels, and to me, coming from Seattle, a lot of this stuff was like a slap in the face,” he said. “Back then, all the black bands had white bus drivers so they could eat, ’cos you couldn’t go into white restaurants. Even in Philadelphia, they had segregated hotels.” Jones left Hampton in 1953, having accompanied the band on a European tour and rubbed shoulders with a remarkable lineup of musicians including the trumpeters Clifford Brown and Art Farmer.

He set about making a living writing arrangements for jazz luminaries including Basie and Tommy Dorsey. Although Jones put in a stint as musical director for Gillespie’s ensemble in 1956, he was aware that the days of the big bands were numbered, and rock’n’roll was coming. “In a funny way, Lionel Hampton was one of the bands that was serious with a rock’n’roll sensibility, before we even knew what the word meant,” Jones said.

During 1957 and 1958, Jones based himself in France and Scandinavia. He continued to study composition – notably with Nadia Boulanger, mentor of Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland, among others – and took a job with Barclay Disques, the Paris-based subsidiary of Mercury Records. While in Europe he formed a star-studded big band of his own, and spent two years touring Europe and the US. He wrote material for Count Basie, and during the late 1950s and early 60s worked as an arranger and music director on recording sessions for vocalists including Billy Eckstine, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan.

In 1964, Jones won his first Grammy award, for his arrangement of Basie’s song I Can’t Stop Loving You. He also produced four million-selling singles for Lesley Gore, including the US chart-topper and UK Top 10 hit It’s My Party (1963). His hectic career was matched by an equally eventful private life. In his memoir Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones (2001), he described how at one point he was dating five women at the same time.

His burgeoning profile was boosted by collaborations with Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and Andy Williams. Jones’s association with Sinatra produced the albums It Might As Well Be Swing (1964) and Sinatra at the Sands (1966), both featuring Basie’s band. Jones and Sinatra became close friends, Jones later writing that Sinatra was “hip, straight up and straight ahead, and above all, a monster musician”.

Jones’s track record gained him entry into the lucrative fields of film and television, and he became the first black composer to find acceptance within Hollywood. Throughout the late 60s and 70s he was commissioned to write scores for more than 30 movies and hundreds of TV shows. Among his better-known film projects are In Cold Blood (1967), In the Heat of the Night (1967), The Italian Job (1969) and The Getaway (1972). The theme from Ironside is his most instantly recognisable effort for the small screen, but his compositions for The Bill Cosby Show, Sanford and Son and his Emmy-winning work for the miniseries Roots proved enduringly popular.

As the 70s wore on, Jones displayed his instinct for moving with prevailing musical trends by immersing himself in funk and disco music. His album Body Heat, from 1974, featured the Brothers Johnson as the rhythm section, and Jones subsequently produced bestselling albums by the Brothers Johnson themselves.

Despite undergoing surgery to deal with twin brain aneurysms in 1974, Jones continued to work at a furious pace. He produced chart-busting albums for the disco queen Donna Summer and soul diva Aretha Franklin, and he found another musical soulmate in the guitarist George Benson. Their collaboration on Give Me the Night (1980) – the debut release on Jones’s Qwest label – was another career benchmark, the album reaching No 3 on the US album chart while the title track was a No 4 single.

Meanwhile Jones had hits under his own name. He had a US Top 30 success with Stuff Like That (1978), and in 1981 scored a Top 10 album with The Dude, which spun off the Top 30 hit Ai No Corrida (No 4 in the UK), and the Top 20 hits Just Once and One Hundred Ways, both featuring James Ingram. In 1998, the hit movie Austin Powers prompted a revival of Quincy’s 1962 hip-shaker, Soul Bossa Nova; it was also used as a theme for the 1998 football World Cup in France.

Jones first met Michael Jackson, then aged 12, at Davis Jr’s house, but it was not until Jones was working on the soundtrack for the film The Wiz (1978), starring Jackson and Diana Ross, that he was invited to produce a Jackson solo album. This was the 20m-selling Off the Wall (1979). Their collaboration continued with Thriller (1982) and Bad (1987), the trio selling 100m copies between them. In between, Jones was also the natural choice to produce the 1985 charity single, We Are the World, co-written by Jackson and Lionel Richie and performed by the all-star USA For Africa to benefit Ethiopian famine victims.

Jones was a pivotal figure in helping musicians take control of the business side of their work. Like most other musicians, he had grown accustomed in the early years of his career to having his royalties and copyrights appropriated by unscrupulous publishers or record labels. “If you write a song, the publishing is 50% of that,” Jones explained. “They would say: ‘I want 50% of your creation’, so that means you get 25%. That was normal.” He began to see the light when he took a job as A&R man at Mercury Records in New York in 1961. Within two years, he was made a vice-president, making him the first high-level black executive of a major record label. “I’d lost so much money when I had my band [the Jones Boys] in Europe that I had to go with a record company. That’s when I said: ‘I’d better pay attention to the other side, because it is a music business.’”

After moving from Mercury to A&M Records he launched Qwest, which became home to such varied artists as New Order, Milt Jackson, the Winans and Tevin Campbell. Qwest also did excellent business with the soundtracks to Malcolm X (1992) and the rap-generation movie Boyz N the Hood (1991).

Growing into the role of entertainment mogul, Jones co-produced Steven Spielberg’s film of The Color Purple in 1985 and produced its soundtrack. In 1990 he teamed up with Time Warner Inc to form Quincy Jones Entertainment; in 1991 he helped create the NBC television series The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, which launched Will Smith on the road to superstardom; and in 1993 he set up VIBE. He headed a consortium of businessmen that formed Qwest Broadcasting, which purchased TV stations in Atlanta and New Orleans.

Jones won an Emmy, 28 Grammys and three Special Grammy awards, including the Grammy Legend award in 1992, was given the Sammy Cahn lifetime achievement award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1989, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. He was showered with honorary doctorates, Time magazine declared him one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century, and in 1990 he was made a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur, promoted to commander in 2001.

He was celebrated in the film Listen Up: The Lives of Quincy Jones (1990) and the documentary Quincy (2018), directed by his daughter Rashida.

Three marriages ended in divorce. He is survived by a daughter, Jolie, from the first, to Jeri Caldwell; a daughter, Martina, and son, Quincy, from the second, to Ulla Andersson; two daughters, Rashida and Kikada, from the third, to Peggy Lipton; and by a daughter, Kenya, from a relationship with Nastassja Kinski, and a daughter, Rachel, with Carol Reynolds.

“Whereas I saw Greatest Hits as a dark indoor album, I see this next body of work as a light outdoor album,” he reveals. “There’s a bright vibe with very high energy to it. So much of what we do is about how it’s going to be experienced by the community. We did a lot of programming on the last record. I wanted to get more tactile and touch shit now,” he laughs. “I needed to hold a guitar and have the strings vibrating on my fingers.”

That brings us to the first single “FUNERAL GREY.” Powered by four different guitars (including a toy guitar for the main riff), the track swings like a wrecking ball from a buoyant verse into a distortion-lifted hyper-hypnotic hook, “She wore a sweater in summer weather. She wore a sweater. It was FUNERAL GREY!”

“This is—and I fucking hate the term—more love-driven,” he confesses. “It’s a reintroduction, and it’s more about other people than just me. When I wrote the song, I was walking around my friend’s neighborhood. I was laughing, because it looked so haunted—like something out of an M. Night Shyamalan movie. I thought, ‘If this was an Instagram filter, it would be ‘Funeral Grey’.’ It’s got a dark title, but I love how bright it sounds. To me, that’s Waterparks.”

In the end, the new music is meant for the people comprising this greater movement—like everything Waterparks do.

“When you listen to us, I just want you to feel good,” Awsten leaves off. “It’s bouncy shit. Even if it’s aggressive, it’s enthusiastic. There’s a lot of energy behind this. I try to make music that tingles people’s fucking brains, which is what my favorite music does for me.”

William ‘Bill’

Bill is very much a Rock person. You’ll hear him listening to Ghost, Three Day Grace, My Chemical Romance, the classics like that. Just different types of Rock in general. Pop Rock, Rock and Roll, etc. Even go as far as to play an electric guitar. How did he manage to? I mean, magic. Who says you need to plug it in anywhere, when you can just produce magic itself to work it? Loves Alternative Rock Music. Favorite song? Gotta go with a classic like Mary On A Cross

Charlie

Of course he loves punk, and alternative, but he did mellow out a bit when he finally settled into his job. Playing softer music for the new born dragons made him come to love softer songs. Like jazz, country, and folk. So to kinda wrap it all together, he’s a Taylor Swift fan. He’s not a swiftie, but he does enjoy her music. He also loves to play guitar, many kinds, and even knows how to play the flute. Thanks to Hagrid. Playing the guitar, or flute, for the baby dragons is a passion time he wouldn’t trade for anything. Favorite song? 100% Taylor’s ‘No Body No Crime’ for sure

100% is the type to believe in the Mozart Theory. He listens to classical musics constantly. Such a nerd. Genuinely though, he does enjoy it. It helps him study and focus. So if you were to introduce him to the genre of lofi? He really would like it. Soft wordless music to play in the background, as he works. So he would be such a Stan for The Lofi Girl, if he was to say if he has a favorite anything

Fred And George

Big Band, Jazz, Swing, Techno Swing, they LOVE that high energy bop music. I mean, look at what their literal shops theme song is ((Fun fact, as I am writing this I am ACTUALLY playing Wizard Wheezes on the piano right now, for a recital!)) They gotta love that high energy music. Love it love it love it. Fred and George go nuts for Fully Dressed With Out A Smile. They also will break into Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better if given the chance. They especially loved singing that with Ginny, while growing up

Ron

He was invested in Rock, of course. The side effects of being a younger sibling to a big family, but Hermione helped him explore other interests as well. Helped him be more brave in what he liked. He does love Rock styles, but Pop Rock was more his branch. Pop just has a more fun energy to it. Different from his day to day life. Helps him stand out a little as well, since Bill is more into the alternative/emo/goth aesthetic types or Rock. One Republics ‘Run’ speaks to him a lot. Don’t tell anyone I told you this, but he also really likes Sk8ter Boy. Because it makes him think of Hermione. Shhhhh

Ginny

Musicals. She just can’t pick a genere. Growing up with six brothers gave her a love of different types of music. So if you ask her what she likes, she will say musicals. Musicals have so many types and moods. It’s perfect for whenever you don’t know what to listen do. In a romantic mood? High energy? Even depressive gothic? There’s a musical for it. She’s learned to keep her mind open, and invest in different interests. Her favorite song really depends on the mood she’s in, or vibe. But if you had to twist her arm, it’s gonna be that classic Merry Poppins Step In Time. It reminds her of her brothers, whenever they had to do spring cleaning together. If she’s sad, that song will ALWAYS make her feel better. If not? Clearly a imposter!

Fun fact about me! I am currently learning piano! I just love music so much. Piano is also good for me health wise, because I have dexterity issues because of my muscle spasms. I’m practicing a recital song, and it’s Wizard Wheezes. Which I’ll perform as my final. I hope to post it on tumblr in the future. As for music I like? Scene/Ravecore and Techno Swing. I guess I just love high energy songs with electric vibes. Ironic, given I have chronic fatigue. Along with, ya know, trapped in a wheelchair. Slay. Thank you again anon! Dusty-When Doc said "Today younglish don't know anything about music" he certainly didn't mean our favorite plane. Ozzy Osbourne, Electric Light Orchestra, Guns N Roses, Queen, Metallica, Nirvana or even single tracks like "Let's Grove Tonight" are like a piece of cake for him. He has music from the 70s, 80s or 90s in his little finger. (also fandom songs for ex. "Build our Machine", "Get Out" or "Hero Forms")

Dottie- Personally, I think she would be a fan of Arcane songs. She often listens to them while she works, which gives her a really cool vibe (especially "Playground" or "Snakes")

Chug - a fan of the opening credits of various series or cartoons and more (and also fan of Disney/Dreamworks songs) For sure, while watching "Ninjago" or "Monkie Kid" together with Dusty, he would sing it out loud (I'm not surprised :V)

it took me a bit to get to this bc this question means so much to me you dont understand . ANWAYS

stan: ...very generic answer but like. midwest emo. dad rock. and like.. emo / pop rock too??? he could rock w/ some fall out boy, but not like patd cuz its too theatre kidsy. and OBVIOUSLY the front bottoms and alex g and modern baseball!! if we learned anything in band in china its that he very much treats music like an outlet for his emotions. and on that note he listens to metal too, but mostly when he is mentally at his worse.

kyle: i dont think i could pin him down to one genre, he's a big music guy but stays within the constraints of "music with authenticity but not to the point that it makes him look pathetic". so he's not listening to the front bottoms like stan is because that's just.. TOO raw, and hes caught up in the "lack of music conventions" in stan's music taste (he doesn't know a thing about music theory so he'll get pissed if you ask why). at the same time like kyle would NOT be into overproduced shit you hear on the radio u feel me. he curates his spotify playlist moods well, new wave/folk/indie rock/r&b at his neutral state and hip hop/punk/harder rock when at his other neutral state (pissed off). he doesn't listen to music when he's sad he just sits there in silence with a thousand yard stare

kenny: quite literally will listen to anything and everything. falls into the industrial pop / electropop scene frequently because he loves that it all sounds very New! he is a very social individual so he's most likely to put on what will get a rise out of his friends, he puts on 100 gecs and nine inch nails everytime he gets the aux because they bitch about it the entire time. its funny. he prefers to have noise on 24/7 and will even listen to pop country if it means unlocking new emotions

butters: will also listen to anything but to a worse degree. kenny has a rationale for what he listens to and why he enjoys it but butters just hears a song and decides its the best thing he's heard in his life. he's well versed in the girlypop scene through cartman but he also thinks that ajr is genuinely #deep. you know those overproduced songs that sound like they'd be in old navy commercials??? yeah. butters would listen to that shit.

Funny how an anon recently mentioned Alex saying he wanted to be like Mina she withdrew from the public after two decades. With everything Alex said last night before and after performing Mirrorball, him not going out with the band that much, not being in a “whole” relationship and only occasionally holidaying together, etc I feel like he’s gonna go for a big change. “Let’s leave the past behind / something tells me you’re gonna be okay / don’t worry about me I’ll get along fine (or sth along those lines)” I don’t think these were random. There’s been many times he did something and we found out he’s mentioned that in the past. I mean TBHC was supposed to be a solo album but he said Jamie was so enthusiastic about it so maybe that made him want to stay and then he decided to make a “goodbye” album aka The Car. Everything from the beginning to the end of The Car album is like saying goodbye and leaving things behind.

Q: “Over and out, it’s been a thrill”, you sing on Big Ideas. Hello You, Jet Skis On The Moat and Perfect Sense also contain “goodbyes” and “goodnights”. Are you saying goodbye to something?

AT: “Yeah, I think that’s fair. That all has to do with where I arrived in life at the moment. I’m 36, the band exists for about twenty years, including the whole run-up. So I’ve been in the band for more than half of my life. You leave things behind, while the clock keeps ticking. People, places, your younger self. Time. Though that’s not necessarily a bad thing, you get new things in return. But it’s human nature to sometimes look back on what has been, what’s behind you. Though I’m pretty good at leaving things behind.” (OOR 2022)

There was also that Sydney Herald interview that had this suggestive tone that he might leave the band and the journalist even quoted Sting.

Besides the songs the OOR journalist mentioned, Mirrorball, Hello You and Mr Schwartz have this melancholic goodbye and “the end is near” vibes. (“Gradually, it's coming into view / It's like your little directorial debut / As fine a time as any to deduce / The fact that neither you or I has ever had a clue / The gloved hand's reachin' in to hit the switch / There's not one goddamn thing that you can do about it / But Mr. Schwartz is havin' tea with the grips / Askin' after all the wives and the kids / It's at the heart of what the business is”) / (“There's just enough time left to swing by / Hello you, still draggin' out a long goodbye? / I ought to apologize for one of the last times / As that meandering chapter reaches its end / And leaves us in a thoughtful little daze”)

Maybe he realized he has to say a proper goodbye to the band with an album and give them an explanation/apology through his lyrics, maybe that’s why this tour is longer than the previous one. (“Still draggin’ out a long goodbye”)

And if we’re getting into conspiracy theories a little bit, The Car is the seventh album and 7 represents “completeness” (“שבע “seven” is spelled with the same consonants as the word שבע “complete/full” ”). Yeah I know this is unrelated and out of place but it can kinda make Perfect Sense.

I can't comment on anything he said last night during Mirrorball as I haven't seen it but it's no surprise that people perceive The Car as a goodbye album. It has all these lines you've mentioned and a very nostalgic vibe which usually sets in before you either close a chapter or say goodbye to something as you look back on things. The question is if it turns out this way what he's gonna do next. Still music on a different level or something completely different?

Cool Steampunk bands you should know about

Abney Park — one of the oldest running Steampunk bands I currently know of and follow! Steampunk pirates, who still put on fantastic online concerts. Recommended for techno likers, or general pirate enthusiasts!

Steam Powered Giraffe — another very cool Steampunk band — one of the most popular I believe! Three singing musician automatons, each with their own lore. Wonderful performances, both serious and silly songs, and they did the soundtrack for the (also steampunk!) great game known as Steamworld Heist. And as of now, Steamworld heist II!

The Cog Is Dead — A great Steampunk band with very impressive storytelling songs! Also does a lot of covers, ranging from We Are Number One to Old Town Road! (I actually highly recommend watching their own cover of their own song, Another Cog in the Machine, but done in 25 different Steampunk styles!)

Frenchy and the Punk — I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them live, wonderful people, great music! More of a gothic folk blend, but with unique things such as batfrogs, they never disappoint!

The Mechanisms — Disbanded, and I sadly don’t know much about their lore. They have wonderful music however, seem to be great performers! I know they have a wonderful fan base here on tumblr

Voltaire — Gothic Dark Cabaret, with lots of fantastical guitar. Very impressive vocals as well! Another highly recognizable artist, Voltaire deals with macabre topics in a fantastic style.

Vernain Process — Steampunk with a progressive rock twist! Another early Steampunk pioneer band, they’re more slow—but very heavy. Like you’re in a mad scientist’s laboratory!

Unwoman — A fantastic cellist, she’s put out lots of original albums, all with fantastic music. Her music to me feels like I’m at a ball—dressed to impress, with her music playing.

This Way to the Egress — Steampunk, Dark Cabaret, and a bouncy style!

Caravan of thieves — Also Dark cabaret, more swing style. With songs such as 'eat you' and 'Rattlesnake' They really got a wide array of songs. More guitar focused instrumentals

Professor Elemental — silly British rap! With lore, a book, and quite the whimsy, Professor Elemental has great vibes, and knows how to have a good time.

Spiky — instrumentals, would listen to this for a dnd campaign music.

The Peculiar Pretzelmen — Do you like metal? How about metal being slammed together? They can be classified as dieselpunk, or more rock/punk, but I sincerely love them!

The Men That Will Not Be Blamed — Another rock-adjacent band, I haven’t listened to all of their songs but they’re pretty good!

Pretty Balanced — One of my favorite bands! They are a wonderful band that I wish got more recognition. They also have a precursor band, called The Alphabet

Victor and the Bully — Fantastical music and stories. Pretty bouncy, with hits like Spooky 365! Highly recommend checking out Madam Misfit as well.

Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer — Back to whimsy! Similar to Professor Elemental, Mr. B brings about a chap hop rap. Even having a collaboration with Professor Elemental, he also has a lot of whimsy.

Week ending: 8th October

Two songs this week, both with radically different energies. One will hype you up and leave you in fear for your life, on the lookout for a terrifying murderer, while the other will calm you down, selling you a fantasy of a quiet, pious life. Both are fantastically made, and both have interesting backstories. So, without further ado...

Mack the Knife - Bobby Darin (peaked at Number 1)

This is a song we've seen a few times already - we've had the Dick Hyman instrumental version, and Louis Armstrong's comparatively glitzy version, a few years back. And this version definitely owes more of a debt to Louis' take on this jazzy classic - except for his own version, Bobby's turned the big band elements up to eleven, with increasingly intense brass flourishes throughout the whole song. And I have to say, it works - not least because Bobby brings an energy to match the brass, practically belting some of the lines near the end, and interspersing the whole thing with little interjections, an eek here, a whoah there, a subtle a-ha-a-ha-a-ha there, all of them building up to that huge final sung note and the explosive look out old Mackie is back ending, with its punchy, percussive drums. Excellent stuff.

There are a few other choices Bobby's made, too, all of them subtle, but all of them perfectly calibrated, little touches that just fine-tune the song and make it more exciting and slightly more contemporary. He's calling you babe, now, not the comparatively old-fashioned dear, we've axed the final repeat of the first verse, but possibly most importantly, we've got these repeated key changes, with the whole thing shifting up a semitone at the start of each of the final three verses. This latter change is the sort of thing that shouldn't really work - except you barely notice it, in practice, because each key change is masked by a corresponding ramping-up of the energy of the song, and so you can kind of miss the modulation happening in the thrill of it all. It's masterfully done, and I love it - it almost feels like it's always been part of the song!

It's an unusual choice for Bobby, who up until now has been a fairly clean-cut teen idol, making rock and roll records for the youth. Mack the Knife, a jazz standard, is quite a different vibe - and apparently there was some initial doubt as to whether or not a rock and roll audience would go for it. Bobby insisted, though, as part of an album called That's All, which was almost entirely made up of old standards, given a jazzy, swinging treatment. And his instincts would prove trustworthy - the album was a huge success, and this track, in particular, has gone on to become basically the definitive version of Mack the Knife, and an undisputably huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

I can also kind of see in this the template for something you still see today, which is where an artist mostly known for trendier teen-friendly music tries to broaden their appeal by making an album (often of covers) intended to appeal to adults, to prove that they're "not just a teen idol", or whatever. It's a clever move, if quite a cynical one, because teen idols are inherently quite a short-lived phenomenon - once their initial glut of fans have aged out of the teenager bracket, there's not much call for them, unless they can prove that they've got new tricks in them. Combine this with the natural tendency to want to develop your music and pursue new musical interests, and you've got yourself a pleasingly eccentric bunch of "crossover" or "genre" albums made by former boy-banders - the most obviously Bobby Darin-esque example I can think of right now is Robbie Williams' swing album, but I know there are other examples out there!

This song is good. I've known and liked it for quite a while, but listening to it now, I'm just struck by how well structured and enjoyable it still is! I liked Bobby Darin's earlier output, but this is another league.

The Three Bells - The Browns (6)

And so we go from big, loud, brassy numbers about a murderer on the loose to something altogether gentler, with an a cappella intro telling the story of how there's a valley, hidden deep in the valley / Among the pine trees, half forlorn / And there, on a sunny morning / Little Jimmy Brown was born. It's all done in tight mixed harmony, with a clear country feel to it, but also kind of in the style of an opera recitative, hanging on one note, and the end result is very sleepy, really giving you a sense of how quiet and hidden-away this town is.

The song then picks up, with a verse about how the village christened young Jimmy, with the bells all ringing, praying for guidance: lead us not into temptation / Bless this hour of meditation / Guide him with eternal love. Twenty years later, Jimmy's in church once again, this time to get married. And sure enough, the congragation are praying again: lead us not into temptation / Bless, O Lord, this celebration / May their lives be filled with love. And finally, we cut to a final day, Jimmy's funeral, as the bell rings once again, and those assembled pray: lead us not into temptation / May his soul find the salvation / Of they great eternal love. It's cute. A little bit morbid - there's a real contrast between the cute, twee sound of it all and the final verse, especially, which isn't dark, exactly, but it's definitely bittersweet, the rapid jump from wedding to funeral only serving to underscore how fleeting life is, and how quickly the excitement of a wedding gives way to old age and death.

There's also something undeniably wistful and nostalgic about the village you see in the song, the sort of small country community where the whole place comes together for christenings and weddings and funerals and the like, and where people do stick around a whole life long. Things are pretty traditional - people take real comfort from a sort of old-timey religion - and everyone looks to God for sound, benevolent guidance. It's idealised, the sort of place that may never have existed, and is certainly vanishingly rare by the 1950s, with declining levels of religiosity and increasing urbanisation. And the song seems to know it - hence why the town at the start has to be hidden deep in the valley, cut off from the outside world, with no reference to where it actually is. It's a utopia in the proper sense, a "no-place" that can't really exist, except as a fantasy in people's minds, albeit one strong enough to get a record like this to Number 6.

I should mention here that while some elements of this fantasy do feel specifically American to me, it's not originally an American song, but rather a Swiss folk song, Les Trois Cloches, written by one Jean Villard and first recorded by Édith Piaf in 1946, accompanied by an a Lyonnaise cappella group called Les Compagnons de la chanson. An American DJ heard the song while on their travels and liked it enough to play it on local radio back in the US, which is where the Browns picked it up and decided to put their own country spin on it - right as they were about to give up making music, too! And they were right to, because it was a huge hit, even reaching number 1 in the US.

Both of these songs are fine - impressively well-made, even. And both were huge hits that felt almost tailor-made to appeal to a wide audience. It's nice to see non-pop and non-rock and roll songs making the grade in that way. But only one thrilled me. So...

Kabinet Mirage Band - Fabulario

Kabinet Mirage Band has a wide creative range, mixing genres and styles into a cohesive yet diverse instrumental sound. The band is the musical counterpart to the theatre company Kabinet Mirage, founded by Ibon Goitia and Cielo Faccio in 2017 in Berlin (home to one of Europe's most exciting music scenes). Ibon himself is also the founder and director of the Kabinet Mirage Band, which has been active since 2021.

The Kabinet Mirage Band recently dropped an album, “Fabulario,” a collection of distinctive musical narratives, each with a unique flavor. The music on this release is a combination of fusion jazz, world music, swing, and neo-classical influences. It is not always easy to allow such different influences to coexist, but the band is always eager to explore many insightful themes behind the music. The kaleidoscopic sonic fabric weaved by the group also matches the Kabinet Mirage Band’s willingness to foster open-ended creativity and cultural diversity in music and beyond. The album features 11 songs, including the opener “Jubiler,” which immediately sets the mood. The song has a soft yet energetic brushed drum kit, as well as a vintage big band/swing vibe that brings a retro feel to the album right away.

“Fugitivo”, another striking track on the album, is moody composition blending contemporary acoustic music and folk, characterized by atmospheric instrumentation and a very cinematic sound, evoking the work of artists such as Yann Tiersen, just to name a few.

The track Mond is another interesting performance, which merges eclectic modern jazz and even some hints of rock with unconventional structures, creating an atmospheric piece filled with emotion and vivid imagery, in the vein of influential bands such as Snarky Puppy, but with a very distinctive formula that makes it one-of-a-kind. In addition, the song “Petit Dejeuner” is a tasteful blend of percussive sounds, eerie vocal breathing tones, and experimental sounds that might resonate with fans of artists like Tom Waits or Marc Ribot.

Other highlights include “Il Villaggio,” with its varied arrangement. The song falls somewhere in between an outlaw folk ballad and a vintage rock song. In addition, it’s impossible not to mention the song “Monster Polka,” which - as the title suggests, has a really quirky polka influence that could easily be featured on a Tim Burton flick!

Ibon Goitia, the band's director and lead composer, has a vision: to create atmospheres and capture the audience's imagination. He is particularly interested in the theatricality of music, which gives the band a creative impulse in line with Kabinet Mirage's multidisciplinary approach, and also serves as a way to offer a much more immersive and compelling listening experience. "Fabulario" is a perfect example of this.

The album is available for streaming on Spotify and serves as a great calling card for the band.
