*sigh* thoughts on Nintendo's botw/totk timeline shenanigans and tomfoolery?

tbh. my maybe-unpopular opinion is that the timeline is only important when a game's place on the timeline seriously informs the way their narrative progresses. the problem is that before botw we almost NEVER got games where it didn't matter. it matters for skyward sword because it's the beginning, and it matters for tp/ww/alttp (and their respective sequels) because the choices the hero of time makes explicitly inform the narrative of those games in one way or another. it matters which timeline we're in for those games because these cycles we're seeing are close enough to oot's cycle that they're still feeling the effects of his choices. botw, however, takes place at minimum 10 thousand years after oot, so its place on the timeline actually functionally means nothing. botw is completely divorced from the hero of time & his story, so what he does is a nonissue in the context of botw link and zelda's story. thus, which timeline botw happens in is a nonissue. honestly I kind of liked the idea that it happened in all of them. i think there's a cool idea of inevitability that can be played with there. but the point is that the timeline exists to enhance and fill in the lore of games that need it, and botw/totk don't really need it because the devs finally realized they could make a game without the hero of time in it.

#i really do have a love-hate relationship with this timeline #because it's FASCINATING lore. genuinely. and i think it carries over the themes of certain games REALLY well #but i also think it's indicative of a trend in loz's writing that has REALLY annoyed me for a long time #which is this intense need to cling to oot #and on a certain level i get it. that was your most successful game probably ever. and it was an AMAZING game.#and i think there's definitely some corporate profit maximization tied up in this too--oot was an insane commercial success therefore you'r #not allowed to make new games we need you to just remake oot forever and ever #and that really annoys me because it makes certain games feel disjointed at best and barely-coherent at worst.#i think the best zelda games on the market are the ones where the devs were allowed to really push what they were working with #oot. majora. botw. hell i'd even put minish cap in there #these are games that don't quite follow what was the standard zelda gameplay at their time of release. they were experimental in some way #whether that be with graphics or puzzle mechanics or open-world or the gameplay premise in its entirety. there's something NEW there #and because the devs of those games were given that level of freedom the gameplay really enforces the narrative. everything feels complete #and designed to work together. as opposed to gameplay that feels disjointed or fights against story beats. you know??#so I think that the willingness to allow botw and totk to exist independently from the timeline is good at the very least from a developmen #standpoint because it implies a willingness to. stop making shitty oot remakes and let developers do something interesting.#and yes i do very much fear that the next 20 years of zelda will be shitty BOTW remakes now #in which botw link appears and undergoes the most insane character assassination youve ever seen in your life #but im trying to be optimistic here. if botw/totk can exist outside the timeline then we may no longer be stuck in the remake death loop #and i'm taking eow as a good sign (so far) that we're out of the death loop!! because that game looks NOTHING like botw or oot.#fingers crossed!!#anyway sorry for the game dev rant but tldr timeline good except when it's bad #asks #zelda analysis

#game changer #bug with a big ass #honestly not sure if that episode came together‚ though #it seems like it was probably more fun for the players than the viewer #the whole premise kind of relies on an intimate familiarity with the cast that the viewer doesn't necessarily have #and i don't think the ratfish himself really added all that much #i think all the behind-the-scenes editing showing people coming up with their jokes in real time was like...#kind of bad for comedy? made the timing of the gags very weird #idk how else you'd present it as a show‚ though. inherently a difficult thing to film.#could not have been an easy editing job‚ that's for sure #they clearly put a lot of effort into injecting visual interest into a premise that really only works as a live text chat #with mixed success

danny phantom 2x15 is like horrifying. pov in the span of a day and a half you become friends with someone suspiciously similar to you. then find out that your greatest enemy is obsessed with making his own version of you to be his son and you get tortured in the same way you died so he can get the last bit of dna he needs to create it But You Refuse To Give It. and throughout the day you’ve fought multiple unstable versions of yourself only to watch them dissolve into ectoplasm. then you find out that new friend is also a clone of you and is also on the verge of dissolving. like what the fuck

I love the trope of Jim deciding to seduce Spock, but I also think a lot about an oblivious Jim who truly doesn't think Spock would ever be interested in him, but who's every action drives Spock closer and closer to an emotional meltdown

Spock suffering over the green shirt, the red tights, the dress uniform

Jim casually geeking out over some theory or scientific principle and Spock smitten over how smart he is

Spock abruptly having reports to analyze after Jim gets caramel sauce on his hands and sucks it off his fingers

Jim just being Jim: compassionate and brave and selfless and determined and kind, and he'll just smile at Spock and Spock knows it's a lost cause

There are only two episodes left in The Boys S4, but having seen the leaks and with what we got, I have some opinions.

My conspiracy theory is that they got too many cooks in the kitchen (writers in the writer’s room)—plus the writer’s strike and pandemic happening during this time—and it’s starting to make sense how they dropped the ball with this season.

#the boys #the boys tv #the boys amazon #the boys season 4 #the boys season four #S1-3 is like a sharp honed blade (with occasional misses) whereas S4 swings a lot but misses their target #I like a handful of things (Antony Starr and Karl Urban are CARRYING the season for me)#God; Antony’s back must hurt from carrying the show so hard (give the man an Emmy)#but there are so many more moments in the show that falls flat for me #my interest in the secondary cast is virtually nonexistent (and this is coming from a person who likes them all)#I do not care about Joe; I do not care about the Frenchie & Colin B-plot; I do not care about Annie’s randomly thrown in abortion (???)#there’s a lotta wasted character moments and unnecessary fluff they should’ve cut out to laser focus in on the main plot #the character moments do not hit as hard as the writers hoped they did (it feels like they just threw random darts & hoped they hit)#this season feels like a waste of time :/ which is unfortunate #I like edgy dark humor & satire as the next guy—but it’s gotta advance the plot or be used for a purpose other than shock value #it doesn’t help that you get the sense a couple script decisions is a result of Kripke wanting to work with ppl he wants to work with again #which—fair enough; it’s his show—he can do whatever he wants #but I get a weird feeling when he throws in celebrity cameos & their B-plots instead laserfocusing on the main characters #I hope they tighten the story in the final season 5 #they focused too much on the wrong things and not on the right things (seriously?? not showing Butcher taking the V??? making it offscreen?)#and the tentacles instead of making Butcher’s powers ironically parallel the very man he hates :/#the obvious Venom symbiote parody is not as funny or cool as you think it is (when you had a VERY cool premise before)

Hello and good day! I'm sorry if this has already been asked before and you can totally just ignore this if you want, but I'm curious: can you imagine a world where somehow, Aoi likes someone else and not Akane? Cause I think that while the canon version of her is cute, I have recently read a what-if fanfic in her pov where she absolutely hates Akane the same way she does her other admirers and now I am hyperfixating on that. What habits would have been different compared to canon Aoi? Would Akane have grown more deperate since he (presumably) would know that Aoi genuinely does not like him in this scenario? What if he began noticing Aoi starting to like her dream boy in class? The possibilities are killing meeeeee!

Oh man, I'm the wrong person to ask this cause I genuinely can't imagine this scenario being possible without obliterating Akane's characterization.

Do you remember why Akane fell in love with Aoi? Because Aoi loved him so much that she broke her "cold and indifferent, hate dealing with people" mask for him. She TRIED so hard to hate him but still ended up crying cause she cared so much.

If the mask was real and she truly didn't care about him, I don't think Akane would fall for her.

If he did fall for her later on anyways, I can't see him trying to pursue her after being rejected/met with her discomfort/annoyance. Even in the timeline where she does like him and comes up with the silliest of excuses to keep him around without straight up accepting his confessions, he had admitted that he would keep keeping her safe while keeping a distance in case she doesn't want him.

He only pursues her so much cause she actively flirts and encourages him to.

The idea Aoi would encourage him if she didn't like him does make Akane pestering her believable but at the cost of Aoi's own character being obliterated. I don't think I'm being harsh when I say Aoi would be a bitch if she went "hehe try harder <3 Impress me Akane-kun!" consistently enough for him to buy it that she could date him while thinking "Tch, hate this guy, he keeps harassing me".

That would means she doesn't even consider him a friend, she doesn't care AT ALL about his feelings, which is nothing like the Aoi who tries to pretend the people she dislikes don't bother her/don't exist and loves her friends dearly, putting them above her.

The most I can picture is Aoi falling for someone else and Akane either not getting a crush on her and supporting her fully, or slowly putting some barrier between them cause he can see Aoi doesn't like him and being in pain, the classic 'i want her to be happy' and 'she won't be with me' conflict where he has a crisis but eventually learn to let her go, reach the point he can be comfortable by her side even when she is with someone else.

Or Aoi realizing Akane likes her romantically and being anxious that she has to reject a friend, whom she deeply values, but her growing unease and lack of encouragement wouldn't be able to fool Akane for long. Their whole thing is that they know each other well after all and Akane consistently asks 'are you okay?' when he senses anything may be wrong with Aoi.

Maybe it would take some months for Akane to understand without Aoi giving him a straight-up rejection, especially if they are small when he gets the crush, but Akane pays so much attention to her, he would pick up the signs she is uncomfortable, especially if it reaches a point of Aoi staring to resent him for it more than being scared of losing him. He either drop it silently or straight up confront her about it, probably.

#full disclosure i hate 'what ifs' that turn kind characters into very non complex mean people #so again. I am not the best person to ask this. I have negative bias T-T #but the base premise of 'aoi liking someone else' can be interesting #i just never saw it done without either aoi or akane becoming caricature of themselves #tbhk #toilet bound hanako kun #aoi akane #akane aoi #jshk
