I am here actually to appreciate your post. I saw a blogger’s post saying The sign would have been ‘successful’ had it got filled with fantasy and romance and limit action to 10%. I wondered why that person, who says BL is all about romance, watched a show whose genre is action. Then I saw your post about people watching many shows to stay in fandom and I agree. Also you are right about dramas with a complex story receiving heavy criticism. Everything (even lack of proper plot or conflict) is exempted in a romance drama. No wonder most BLs are confined to ‘2 boys and their jealous & crying moments, routine conflicts enhanced by Escola or leads explaining how important Nikon printer is for their relationship’
Well damn hit me in the feels with this appreciation I'ma get all shy and shit.
I always wonder if by "successful" people mean in terms of critical acclaim, story telling, or monetarily. When it comes to Thai shows - and some please correct me if I'm wrong - it's difficult to tell how "successful" they are terms of audience reach/monetarily because there's no easily verifiable information. Like, there's Youtube numbers sure, but The Sign as an example, aired on Channel 3 what were it's ratings total on that channel? Idk, does anyone know that? Sincerely asking lol
Personally the way I like to judge a piece of media is what I call the Roger Ebert method; he often judged films based not solely on whether they were "good" or "bad but by how successfully they accomplished their goals.
If you read his review of Space Jam while it's clear Ebert doesn't think the movie is high art, "You can watch the movie on the sports and cartoon levels, and also appreciate the corporate strategy that's involved. [...] It is difficult for an actor to work in movies that combine live action with animation, because much of the time he cannot see the other characters in a scene with him. But Jordan has a natural ease and humor, an unforced charisma, that makes a good fit with the cartoon universe."
Ebert praises that the film, while filled with obvious product placement and banking on both nostalgia for the toons & star power of Jordan, accomplishes it's goal of being a family for that can be enjoyed by adults and children, and also the ability to blend techniques of live action, animation and 3D rendering.
I bring this up specifically b/c when I see "reviews" of shows in BL - the most common form of meta I see in BL fandom as a whole and that's not a knock just an observation - it's usually always about the narrative. Nothing about the filmmaking. And if there is discussion about he filmmaking it's usually misinformed or worse misinforming - no that's not what aperture means, yaoi framing isn't really a thing in film, the t-shirt is really just a t-shirt, etc, etc.
And like I get why. Fandom is more about story, what the words on a page or what the characters on screen are doing and saying. It's easier to talk about the amazing communication two characters have b/c you don't really need a film knowledge to discuss that. Which is a factor in why I think shows with lower stakes, more streamlined and straightforward plots get praised at a higher, less diligent and harsh level, than shows that are a bit more daring. They're less challenging in structure, they take less risks, so there's less to critique, and there's less room for a show to disappoint.
There comfort food, rather than trying something new at the restaurant. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, again, this is just a general observation.
To me, The Sign is miles better than Cooking Crush on a simple technical level. I only watched one episode of Cooking Crush and I found it pretty mediocre at best from all technical points: acting, editing, cinematography, directing, storytelling.
This isn't to say Cooking Crush is "bad" or that even if Cooking Crush was "bad" people shouldn't like it. I don't give a fuck if people like it, good for you chase the things that spark joy! I like lots of "bad" media, have y'all ever watched Jason Takes Manhattan?
For me, The Sign, like Space Jam, accomplishes it's goals and those were ambitious goals. An action fantasy BL that actually lives up to that premise and looks good?? The fight choreography looks great considering the obviously budget??
Like one of my issues with Laws of Attraction - aside from how painfully disinterested those kisses looked - was the fight choreography was bad.
The characters very rarely land hits in a way that looks real, or even marginally real. I can only speculate they didn't hire a stunt coordinator and/or couldn't hire stunt doubles so there was a worry of injury on set (for both reasons).
This isn't a disparagement on the actor(s) either, like stunt work is difficult and it's important to have professionals on set who can walk an actor through the steps so both them and others don't get hurt. Jackie Chan is probably one of the best known actors alive for stunt work, but watch how many times he fumbles and potentially hurts himself to the point where other actors are actively worried for him:
youtube
So yeah I'm going to give The Sign it's fucking gold star stickers b/c aside from some missteps in the gun handling - to many one handed gun fights but even then it wasn't all the time and bullets ran out of ammo! Y'all don't know how exciting for me that was to see - the fight scenes look damn good.
I understand the work that went into them, I understand the pre-production time that it took for the crew and cast to learn that and filming them well is another beast too.
There's a couple scenes with shaky cam that I dislike, but god do I love that first long take in The Sign. I love how good the CGI looks overall again, considering what is probably less budget than Black Christmas (2019).
I'm admittedly, fucking picky about what I watch b/c I'm really lazy and prefer watching films in general. I don't really like TV all that much, but if I am watching a tv show I wanna be impressed with more than just the characters talking to each other. Especially if said show is 12 hours or more.
When I'm looking at a piece of media - a comic, a novel, a film, a tv show - I'm thinking about stuff like "what were it's goals, and did it accomplish them? How was the filmmaking? How was the narrative structure? What is the time/place/culture this was made in?"
I'm not sure if people are arguing if The Sign was "successful" in terms of narratively, monetarily, or critically.
In reality we can only really speculate on how successful a Thai BL is based on data that's not not entirely accurate - social media, youtube stats, awards, etc - and even then most of that is based off international audience.
I can glean that 2gether was successful for gmmtv b/c it got a second season and a film, pretty much skyrocketed Bright and Win's individual careers but again, and created a cross country alliance for activism. But even all that is still speculation not facts (except the alliance that's a real thing that happened lol).
[This is all regardless of my own feelings regarding the show which is not kind. But feelings have nothing to do with individual discussion about how monetarily successful or accomplished a show is or isn't.]
Like it might be valid speculation on both shows but it should always come with a disclaimer of - these are not facts. Also, what is "popular" or "successful" can and will be dependent on individual countries too.
Take Cutie Pie for example, I would argue that it wasn't super "successful" here with American fans, but given how overwhelmingly popular Zee and NuNew are in both Thailand and Korea, I would then argue that the show was a success in Thailand and Korea. So was Cutie Pie "successful" or not? I would say yes!
Because "success" isn't and shouldn't be measured only by how western fans receive a piece of media.
In regards to The Sign, I'd argue it appears to be very successful with only the partial data I have at hand - social media which includes places like twitter, facebook, tumblr, the success of their sold out showing for the finale, a special episode, etc. If people argue it was unsuccessful in terms of narrative, well that's debatable and I have no interest in debating why the show is good except in terms of technical filmmaking and storytelling.
And even then it's a pointless debate like or dislike whatever just don't lie or mislead people regarding film terminology and techniques or harass people because they did like A Thing or clog up the tags with annoying posts about how you didn't like said Thing.
Overall, I don't give "reviews" on things I watch either positive or negative cause, well, I'm lazy lol, I don't believe putting how much I hate a show in it's tags and a thorough rating system would be to much work. I actually like how My Drama List rating system works, I just find most reviews on it to be Annoying lmao. Like giving Kinnporsche a 5 or below is absolutely bonkers to me but whatever es lo que es. But I also don't think my thoughts and opinions on shows are that valuable in terms of discussion.
These are mostly my general thoughts on fandom at large and it's not directly at any particular people its just observations at large across various social media platforms.
I think if you like more squeecore shows that's totally gucci, I just wish didn't proposite that 1) those are the only valid shows in terms of BL/queer media and 2) didn't overhype them to such sky high levels

10. Ewan McGregor Movie Review: Nightwatch (1997)
New year, new movies! In 1997, Ewan starred in three movies and all of them had some pretty bizarre plots lol. Let's start at the beginning with "Nightwatch"!
Genre: Horror/Mystery
Rating: R
Director: Ole Bornedal
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Nick Nolte, Josh Brolin
Synopsis: "Nightwatch" follows Martin Bells, a college student, who takes a job as the new night watchman at a morgue at the same time a serial rapist/murderer is on the loose. As the police hunt for the criminal, and more evidence is brought to light, Martin comes to the terrifying realization that he is their prime suspect!
Ewan Review: Ewan plays the main character Martin Bells. Martin is in college as a law student and is best friends with a mean, sexist, and inconsiderate (the list could go on) prick. Ewan has a female love interest and they have a couple kissing scenes as well as a really tender moment early in the movie. He speaks with an American English accent which isn't too shabby except when he gets scared and then he pretty much drops it lol. Speaking of scared, he spends a lot of the movie screaming, and crying. He has a bathing scene with no real nudity but if you pause at just the right time it's possible to see his package from afar. He also gets a public handjob, beat up, bit, and bound. In other words, you get a slew of very weak, vulnerable, and submissive Ewan content.
Screentime Percentage: Ewan is on screen for a grand total of 52/102 minutes making his SP 51%.
To Ewan or not to Ewan: Is the movie worth watching for Ewan content? Yes. Is the movie worth watching in general? Yes. Caveat: if you wish to be entertained then the movie will entertain you. But it espouses such harmful views of women that you might not be able to look past it and enjoy the story.
Warning before Watching: there is a violent murder within the first 3 minutes of the movie and another towards the end. There are close ups of mutilated, naked, dead bodies and lots and lots of blood. The movie is also incredibly sexist and revels in cruelty against women.
Where to Watch: You can stream the movie for free on Pluto TV or soap2day. It's available for rent on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies, and Fandango at Home.
Closing Thoughts: This movie is in the horror genre seemingly because of the gore and suspense. The true horror of this film is the misogyny and general treatment of women. I was more disturbed and disgusted by the way the male characters interacted with the female characters. Mind you, this movie is not a cautionary tale. It is not about the pitfalls of sexism. The male characters do not receive comeuppance for their behavior. It is treated as natural. It is celebrated. We are to understand and sympathize with these chauvinists. We are to find humor in their hatred and charm in their cruelty. The funny thing is, you could (and I did) read a homoerotic subtext within the relationship of the two male best friends because they truly only love each other while their female love interests are just an afterthought. This movie is gross for all the wrong reasons and I will not be watching it again.

A list of random (hilarious as shit) bad shark movies that I might or might not have Eddie subject La'gaan to in my first DC Rarepair Week fic:
This first one is a little on the nose, but--
Devil Fish. A shark-octopus hybrid. South Florida coast. With a line up of characters that sounds like the set up for a joke following the words '-walk into a bar'. Freaking 2.7 stars. It sounds delightfully horrible.
2) Then we've got--
"Amphibious shark-like monster"-- because why not? (I freaking hope this thing has legs. If it's like one of those shark puppy drawings I'll be cry-laughing.) This one's got a 5 star rating, but considering it's from '98 I'm kind of hoping it's one of those cases of 'so bad it's actually good'.
3) This though... Dear gods... 😂
ATOMIC. SHARK. 2.7 stars. And a shark that looks like it has a freaking bomb strapped to it because why the hell not? What's more destructively nonsensical and what-the-actual-fuck than gods-damned bomb-toting sharks?
4) And because someone had to almost combine a shark with a fucking xenomorph--
Toxic Shark. 3.3 stars. Not only is the shark somehow poisonous and "infesting" the water (seriously, how tf does a single animal 'infest' anything? You kind of need a lot of them for 'infesting' to be the right term here), but it has projectile acid spit. That it can apparently fire out of the water at its prey. Because WHY NOT?
5) Of course the what-the-fuck-ery can't stop there--
--because mother-fucking Sand Sharks. 2.7 stars. If I watch this one, istg I want this to feel like it should be a side thing to the Tremors series. I want it to be so hilariously stupid and nonsensical that it feels like it should exist in the same world.
6) Considering I've mentioned this one before in some of my headcanon posts of what Eddie would expose La'gaan to, I'd be remiss if I didn't include--
Ghost Shark. 3.3 stars. Because if you want shark movie crack, this is SHARK MOVIE CRACK. (Last time I saw this one there were some moments I was laughing so hard I was damn near wheezing. The deaths are just... so hilariously stupid. I can't.)
7) Ah, but guess what--
Did you know there's a Ghost Shark 2? Because I sure as hell didn't. 2.6 stars. I'm honestly hoping-- if I do see it-- that it's just as much wtf CRACK as the first one.
8) This one... I shouldn't pick on the anatomy of this thing, but--
Dinoshark. 3.2 stars. They straight up slapped a t-rex-like head on that thing. Why does it have a t-rex head? I don't know! Doesn't matter! It's a ✨dinoshark✨! It doesn't have to make sense! (Though I do have to wonder if it has a neck, because at this angle I can't tell. lol)
9) I didn't think it was possible to get this low on this list, and yet--
Jurassic Shark, at a whopping 1.5 stars. On one hand I'm curious because of that old trope of 'It was frozen in ice, but it thawed out and is still aliiiive!!!!' and I want to see just how bad it is. On the other hand, with it being the only one on this list so far to hit 1.5 stars, I do have my concerns that it'll drop from 'so bad it's hilarious' to just straight up 'OOF, this is baaad.'
10) This one, ngl, is here just because this description is making me crack up to no end.
The Shark Hunter. 5.1 stars. "A crusty recluse-" gross, but hilarious "-on a Caribbean island who is dedicated to destroying sharks-" dude why? Get a fucking hobby ffs. "-gets involved in a hunt for buried treasure." Because shark movies, wanting to be the source of the shark-pocalypse (against sharks), and being crusty and reclusive just naturally goes with treasure-hunting. Yeah. (And wtf is up with that spear he's holding and that thin-ass headband? What is even the point of that thing?)
11) And then there's more 'Let's fuck with nature via fictional science because fuck if it makes sense if it looks cool enough!'
SharkMan. 3.1 stars. Ngl, I barely remember this one-- I think I may have seen it once-- but if it is what I'm remembering then it's some solid what-the-fuck-ery.
12) omg... I can't... wtf... I never knew this one existed. Send help. I am freaking cracking up even thinking about this. JFC.
SHARK EXORCIST. Because it's not enough to have a monster-movie shark with all the nonsensical what-the-fuck bullshit that's involved, but let's have fucking Satan possess a gods-damned shark. 😂😂😂😂 1.3 stars! It's apparently worse than Jurassic Shark! This one might be so bad it's worth it, I don't know. All I know is that I am mcfuckin' losing it over how hilarious this sounds.
13) Wtf.... Was the other SharkMan a sequel? Idek...
Anyway, Sharkman (without 'Man' having the initial letter capitalized), from 2001 (whereas the one higher up on this list is from 2005). 2.3 stars. I'm honestly not sure if this is the one I vaguely remember, or if it's the 2005 one, but either way 'We fucked around and found out with science that doesn't have to make sense because it looks cool!'
14) Pffft. And speaking of things that don't follow logic--
Roboshark! 3 stars! Because a shark biting an alien spacecraft will, 100% for certain, magically make said shark a cyborg-shark. Yup. That's totally how that works. Totally. (This one is absolutely up for consideration because I'm just dying over imagining poor La'gaan going, "That's not how that works! That's not how any of this works!!!")
15) a;lsdkjldsjd;lfa;ldj
Sharkenstein?! Mother-fucking Sharkenstein?! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂Holy shit. 2.1 stars. Because why not have the reanimated sewn-together multi-corpse of a shark put together in World War II rampaging around? OMFGGGGGGG
16) omg, now we're going freaking Nightmare On Elm Street with sharks--
Nightmare Shark. 3.6 stars. People. Being hunted. By a "supernatural shark". In their dreams. TELL ME that doesn't sound like Nightmare On Elm Street But Sharks. 'Oh don't sleep, or Sharky Krueger will get you!' I now want to see this shark and Freddy Krueger in a knife fight in an Applebee's parking lot. lol
17) Pffft. Talk about understanding the assignment.
Bad CGI Sharks. 4.6 stars. If you know it's going to be a bad shark movie, then why not deliberately make it as bad as possible by having shitty CGI sharks pop into reality from a script you were writing and just have everything go tits-up like something that'd make about as much sense as Alice's trip to Wonderland? (Ngl, it sounds like they had waaaaayyyy too much fun with this one.)
18) Oh my f- This is like they're dealing with a raccoon. A giant fucking raccoon with giant sharp and pointy teeth, and I just- omfggggg--
House Shark. 3.7 stars. An ex-cop finds out his house is occupied by a 'house shark' and needs the help of a freaking real estate agent and an exterminator. JFC. IT'S A FUCKING RACCOON. 😂
I am freaking dying. lol
Some of these won't make the cut for whichever one I decide to include mention of in my fic due to time placement, but I definitely have a better idea of some of the possibilities.
(I might throw in a poll in a reblog for the most likely possibilities to see if there are any that are really jumping out to people from this list.)

Honestly, as a man, I think most of my greivances have been with online leftism and the attitudes the queer and feminist spaces have towards men in them have been more damaging than almost anything else in my life. I've stopped thinking about my middle school bullies, and everyone knows my abusive mom and ex girlfriend are insane, but the attitudes I'd been faced with on the internet as a teen still seem to sit with me.
It's the constant judgement. The perpetual social hierarchy of how men are only ever oppressors and be wrong in situations. "Never trust a man who says all his exes are crazy, be wary of men who speak poorly of their mothers" while women who say all their exes are crazy and speak poorly of their fathers are only ever met with sympathy and the usual "lol yeah men are trash". Masculine hobbies and modes of presentation being put down to uplift feminine ones, "when you see a 10/10 girl with a 4/10 guy" comments just cus the guy looks like a dude who works at Target rather than a goddamn movie star, penises and facial hair and deep voices are yucky disgusting, The Ick, "hate when big groups of men are laughing, what's so funny, rape and misogyny?" Videos of dudes crying and talking about how they're having a hard time is just met with ridicule and emasculating commentary from both men and women who posture themselves as kinder and smarter than the status quo, "weh weh raise the male suicide rate they're all rapists and abusers anyway", other dudes siding with women who do this shit cus they're more concerned with being One Of The Good Ones than they are having a fucking spine or a sense of individuality, not realizing they're just the male equivalent of pickme girls.
Idk man it just hurts me. I've been abused by a lot of women, had my sexual advances blown wildly out of proportion because the women in question either regretted engaging with me later or wanted to keep running with this narrative that they have no agency and are perpetually victims in their own lives even though I haven't really done anything to make them believe this, and all it gets me in these spaces is blank stares and awkward silences, when I know if the genders were flipped I'd get nothing but endless support. I'm not as upset about one of my exes making false rape accusations against me as I was as a teenager, but I'm sometimes nervous around bringing it up in leftist spaces at all because I figure folks are just gonna find a way to warp it and make me feel like I imagined the whole thing and that my ex had every right to be a shit to me because she's a girl and girls doing anything is Girl Power, even when it's actively harming others.
I'm sure me being black and trans plays a big role in this too, but again, 1) I'm not a fan of putting emphasis on my marginalization for brownie points, 2) I actually am straight, masculine, gender conforming despite those marginalizations, so there's really no identifiers for me to hide behind and claim "false comparison" over, I actually am all those things that online queer and feminist spaces take issue with and it still sucks and has actively done damage to my self esteem over the years and 3) I've seen other men-- cis, white, whatever-- of all backgrounds talking about their frustrations with this too. It's just another form of socially acceptable bullying and I kinda hate it.
People ask why I go stealth irl, why I don't go out of my way to befriend a ton of queer and liberal people my age, and why I'm adverse to communities that pride themselves on being diverse and all accepting and shit, well this is why. Cus every time I talk about a problem or criticize reactionary sentiment in those spaces, I'm met with me just being ~a pathetic man who's too sensitive to letting marginilized people vent~, I'm told that I'm part of the problem, I'm told that if I stopped being so rape-y and entitled and if I just fell in line like a good little man that I wouldn't have any of these problems, no actual solutions or sympathy, just condescension.
Yeah, of course I identify with bro culture, speak highly of masculinity, and entertain playful douchebaggery after years of that. That stuff saved my life and isn't hostile to my existence or my desires. I'm loud, energetic, assertive, with a hazing / controversial sense of humor and morality, there is no timeline where I'm going to be defanged and docile and see it as acceptable to walk all over someone for things they can't help, no matter how "privileged" they are. These subcultures let me be a man in a way a lot of online (and honestly, irl) leftist spaces aren't really willing to allow or deal with.

Kenny for that ask game! And all of the questions, or how ever many you feel like answering.
This took me, like, an hour and a hslf to type.
1. Why do you like or dislike this character?
On surface level he's really cute and silly. Then you realize he's perverse and swears like a sailor. Then you learn he's a loyal friend, good at emotional support, and will do anything for the people he loves.
He's also pretty versatile. He can be a beautiful princess, a batman-esque vigilante, an eccentric mad scientist, a whitetrash redneck, a talented opera singer, a skilled musician, etc. He can do anything!! (Except sew and cook apparently XD)
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
How he broke the cycle of abuse that's been going on for generations in his family. Also, despite arguably having the worst home life, he never let himself become villian-like like some other characters in this series.
3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?
His tendency to be ignored by the writers. From being 'permanently' killed off to being reduced to a background character for a few seasons to just kinda being forgotten about halfway through some episodes.
4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
Sanrio, any animated run. I just think it'd be funny if this little orange nugget was running around the hello kitty universe being his usual R-rated self and every line of dialogue slipping past the censors.
5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?
Promotion Man by Merzbow. Same reason as All Star, despite the pain of existence he stays silly!! But in a much more noisy and industrial kinda way. Also I think Kenny would listen to harsh noise. (Tumblr wont let me link it :( )
6. What's something you have in common with this character?
Already answered.
7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
In fan art he's often smiling when no one else is. Not in a way that feels like his happiness comes at the expense of others, but moreso he just has a different mindset. Or perhaps he's just high among his sober friends; which, given how he acts in canon sometimes, might be possible.
8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?
When fans portray him as a casual sexual predator and it gets played off as just him being a flirt. The second half of that is the important part.
9. Could you be roommates with this character?
That's a big fat NOPE lol. He's messy as hell, cant cook, and, with his luck, he'd probably die every other week. Sorry, but there's no way no how it would ever happen.
10. Could you be best friends with this character?
Probably, yeah. Kenny gets along with pretty much everyone and I get along with most people too. I see no reason why we couldn't be friends.
11. Would you date this character?
He's 10 XD. But if you mean when he's around my age, still likely no. Reasons I'd rather not get into.
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
Some items he never leaves home without: a loaded handgun, drugs of some kind, 20+ dollars in loose change, the same phone that he's been using for the past five years.
13. What's an emoji, an emoticon and/or any symbol that reminds you of this character or you think the character would use a lot?
🧡😸🍊 reminds me of him
🌮😏🤘 IIRC canonically those are his most used emojis
14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.
You know those shirts they sell at Spencers? Yeah.
15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)
In no particular order:
- Kenrietta. lady who's goth throughout x guy who's secretly goth but looks like the sunniest guy alive. They compliment each other nicely but also lend some funny contrast.
-Kammy/Kentam. The two poorest people in town, match each other's energy and craving for physical affection, are fiercely loyal to each other.
-Stenny. Sooo much angst and hurt/comfort.
16. What's your least favorite ship for this character?
Tbh never been extremely fond of that trope where his partner acts like they dislike him. But whatever, it just isnt my cup of tea.
17. What's a ship for this character you don't hate but it's not your favorite that you're fine with?
This is such an oddly specific question lol. Anyway, i enjoy him and craig, but a lot of content for them feels rather one sided. With that said, they absolutely deserve their reputation as one of the most popular ships in this fandom's history.
18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
Basically the plot of season 24 is that everybody loves him even when no one likes each other. I strive to have that kind of relationship one day XD.
19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?
I dont know WHAT is going on between him and his grandpa, but something aint right.
20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?
Everybody because everyone loves him.
21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?
Already answered.
22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to this character? Something you don't like?
Love how people write about his demise; everyone does it differently and it's epic each time.
Ngl it's pretty funny when fans write about him doing sex work sometimes. It's often comical how much he's willing to do for so little in return. Homeboy's seriously risking jailtime for a buck fifty.
23. Favorite picture of this character?
24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
His muffled speech kinda reminds me of Coco from FHFIF. Also Rada from Chowder.
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
First impression: the cutest little tangerine in the whole wide world.
Now: I would protect you with my life. I'm gonna go buy another pair of socks with your face on it.

Rottmnt Splinter Age Analysis:
I think Splinter is in his early to mid 40’s during the show and movie. This is how I came to that conclusion.
I’d say Yoshi left his grandfather to pursue acting in America in his late teens, probably shortly after graduating. We see this in his character design during the memory where he leaves. I say late teens and not early twenties also because he says he wished he had payed better attention to his grandfather’s “stories” and not “training” as might be expected if he had started a clan education (beyond ninjitsu training) to prevent the return of the Shredder, which assumably would intensify after graduation
Given his mastery of ninjitsu and combat, it is not unrealistic to assume Yoshi was spotted and cast quite quickly after arriving in America.
From the show, we know Lou Jitsu starred in at least 10 movies (this includes his J.I.T.S.U instructional video), so he acted for approximately 10 years as far as we know.
I say 10 movies in 10 years as straight action movies before cgi had a relatively quick turnaround for production to screen and this would have been the 90’s to early 2000’s but movies with an early career Bruce Lee & Jackie Chan style. Bruce Lee was actively acting for 32 years and made 37 feature films, plus 20 television appearances. So a film a year is being generous given that Yoshi probably did a lot of things for real and not as choreographed stunts, cutting down shooting time and prep.
So that gives us an approximate age of late 20’s / early 30’s for when Big Mama kidnaps him. She probably had him fighting for at least a couple months before his escape given the fact that he was reigning champ but got tired and turned to pacifism. So I’d say at most he was in the Nexus for a year.
We know that the kidnapping by Barry and mutation / lab explosion happened 13/14 years prior to the show’s timeline as Draxum sings so in the show
So this leads me to say Splinter is in his early to mid 40’s during the show
Now I say all this in lead up to my actual thesis point:
40’s is pretty young to have serious back issues (without pre-existing disabilities/heath issues), let alone one that can immobilize him one moment then be totally fine the next (with some realignment)
So I have two possible explanations for Splinter’s back problems:
#1 — Stunt injuries. He was an action hero with a decent career of high intensity fighting movies. Even without injuries on set, stunt work takes a toll on the body
#2 — (the far more sad & angsty reason) Being mutated into a rat has shortened his lifespan. Rats only live 2-3 years on average, so the mutation may have had an effect on his speed of aging
His (presumably) premature greying could also be a sign of the fast aging as greying hair rate has been proven to not be influenced by stress and is purely genetic. He is a grey rat with white hair in the more human places despite having black hair as a human. Additionally, Asians are know to start greying in their late 30’s on average (later than white people but earlier than black people). Grandpa Sho had white hair in flashbacks in the show, but would have been in his 60’s at least when Yoshi left. So I admit it could also be argued that the greying is genetic depending on what age you think Hamatos started their families
Anyways, thank you for reading my analysis rant 😅
I put moderate research in and double checked facts concerning my points, but take this with a grain of salt lol

April 2024 Movies/Shows Wrap-Up
A little monthly (spoilery!) wrap-up of all the shows, movies, and shorts I’ve watched or am watching in April 2024, general thoughts, and ranking of them all.
Recommendation of the month(s): idk, had a bunch of shows that I rated pretty well but they each have big caveats lol.
Ranking
The Good Bad Mother (2023) = Utsukushii Kare S2 (2023) = 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) = The Warp Effect (2023)
I Hear Your Voice (2013) = Rewatch: ? Utsukushii Kare S1 (2021)
Jazz for Two (2024) = Utsukushii Kare: Eternal (2023)
Some More (2018)
Watching: 23.5
I managed to watch some shows that I’d been really anticipating for quite a while and were released early last year: Utsukushii Kare S2 + movie and The Warp Effect
Average Rating: 6.5/10
MDL Updates - Added to Watchlist:
A section because I’m curious about how many shows I decide to add to my Watch List a month and also the ratio of watching them:adding them.
Title MDL (year) - (date added to Considering or finalized to Watchlist): initial reaction
Jazz for Two - 240411: New kBL that seems fine
Love is Better the Second Time Around - 240417: i'm fond of the second chance/post-breakup romance trope, hopefully I’ll like this one
Blank - 240417: Only season 1 is out for now and apparently it ends on a cliffhanger, so idk if I should be adding it to the watchlist quite yet but I want age gap GL (w dubious morality? idk what the discourse is about tbh), so I’ll add it and hope S2 is released in May as expected and turns out well
My Beautiful Man: Eternal (2023)
Unknown: I’d been keeping an eye on it since it started releasing and it got pretty high praise all throughout. I think I can get into the we’re-not-biological-brothers-but-we-grew-up-together-as-brothers dynamic
Deep Night: I’ve enjoyed First Piyangkul in shows before and am curious about the host club setting in this. This show is such an interesting case because on reddit and on Tumblr, everybody seems to love it and MDL has some mixed comments but mostly positive there too and yet the MDL rating is 7.5, I wonder why the discrepancy.
23.5: FINALLY
I Became the Main Role of a BL Drama - 240417: The Conversation podcast mentioned in their 2024 Winter Lagniappe and seems like it's a celeb-related show? they’re actors?
To Watch List At Start Of Month: 64
To Watch List At End Of Month: 64
Removed from To Watch List:
Title (Year) - (date removed): reason
Nothing this month
Completely Watched
The Good Bad Mother (2023)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Apr 26, 2023 - Jun 8, 2023
Watch Via: iQiyi (so, ;>)
Watch Dates: Apr 1 - 3, 2024
Rating: 7/10
Overall Impression: Lee Dohyun <3 My reason for watching but the show is bigger than just him. It was so addictive and entertaining, watched the whole show in like 2 days and 2 hours. Impressed by the acting of Lee Dohyun and the mother and Mijoo's actors. The show was mostly about the mother and son relationship, with the revenge plot + the Mijoo/Kangho romance arcs in the background. I deeply wish that Kangho hadn't apparently forever loved and understood his mother and did everything for her and sang her favourite song while studying for the Bar or whatever. He went low-contact with her in Seoul even before he discovered the stuff that made him break up with Mijoo, so I think the reasons behind that and the hurt and betrayal that caused him to take such an action should have been focused on more. We got fleeting moments of him being angry or her saying she's bad but it was all explained away or he understood or whatever. Anyway, idk, I think if that relationship was more clear + the ending of the revenge arc was more solid, I would've rated it higher because I did enjoy this but some things bothered me significantly.

I Hear Your Voice (2013)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Jun 5, 2013 - Aug 1, 2013
Watch Via: Viki (paid, so ;>)
Watch Dates: Apr 3 - 11, 2024
Rating: 6.5/10 [May 12, 2024 Update: Decreased by 0.5 stars when rerating shows I've watched in 2024: 7 -> 6.5]
Overall: Noona romance + mystery + courtroom + sliiight supernatural with mind-reading, it has a bunch of things I liked. It's from over a decade ago but enjoyable nonetheless. I liked it, though Hyeseong and Sooha were quite cute but I wish 1) the episodes were a bit more condensed to be 14-16 episodes and 2) the fucking love triangle wasn't so prominent (though I get that they probably did it because Sooha was underage at first). Not life-changing and kind of overstayed its welcome for me, esp because I was barely watching 1 ep a day in the middle there.

Jazz for Two (2024)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Mar 26, 2024 - Mar 29, 2024
Watch Via: iQiyi (paid, so ;>)
Watch Dates: Apr 11 - 12, 2024
Rating: 6/10
Overall: Nobody in this drama asks before kissing lol not Doyoon, not Seheon, not the little kiss that Seheon's brother gave to sleeping Taejoon, and the other two, Juha and Taeyi, are experts in being creeps and having internalized homophobia that they direct outwardly to the guys they like as well (Seheon's brother fits here too lol). Yet, I enjoyed it a fair amount, the story was coherent, the acting was fine, I was endeared by Doyoon (is he the Omega X kid?), and the dynamics were enjoyable, if iffy on certain counts. Not super attached though.

Rating: 5/10
Overall: It was fine ig but I did skim through the latter half.
Ah, my exams are done (for this semester or forever? who knows), so I can finally start some new shows. Dunno whether I want yaoi with Utsukishii Kare rewatch + S2 and movie or to watch The Warp Effect. They’re both early 2023 shows that I’ve been meaning to watch but it’s been so long of me anticipating them before their release + wanting to watch while releasing + meaning to binge them after release that the expectations are a little high and I keep putting off watching them oof.
And then I got a bunch of Love for Love’s Sake tiktoks on my FYP and the edits for that show are really good, so I’m tempted a bit to rewatch that because it’s on my To Rewatch list anyway but I’ve decided no.
Rewatch: Utsukushii Kare (2021)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Nov 18, 2021 - Dec 23, 2021
Watch Via: Viki
Watch Dates: Mar 23, Apr 17 - 18, 2024
Rating: 7?/10
Overall: Ahh, idek why I wasn't Gripped by this rewatch, like I like the characters and dynamics but it wasn't keeping my attention as much, maybe because it's a rewatch? Maybe my original rating of 6.5 was correct and I shouldn't have bumped it up to 7 but who knows, maybe I'll be reintroduced to the brainworms after watching Season 2 because I found ep 6 really engaging and was into it and S2 + movie will have new, unfamiliar stories for me.

Utsukushii Kare Season 2 (2023)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Feb 8, 2023 - Mar 1, 2023
Watch Via: Viki
Watch Dates: Apr 18 - 19, 2024
Rating: 7/10
Overall: This season is about Hira and Kiyoi's relationship. They didn't become boring after getting together, they didn't magically end up being a perfect happy well-adjusted couple after getting together, nor were there random issues thrown just because; the struggles and hurdles are true to their characters and dynamics. I liked the themes and dynamics it explored and their character + relationship development and progression. I also smiled a lot and lost my mind a little at certain moments. Strong writing, strong characters, strong acting, what a relief.

My Beautiful Man: Eternal (2023)
Country: South Korea
Release Dates: Apr 7, 2023
Watch Via: Viki
Watch Dates: Apr 19, 2024
Rating: 6/10
Overall: Great, fun, though not as emotionally invested as Season 2 because they're in a better place in their relationship in this movie (even if it's not necessarily Perfect). It was interesting to have new people in their lives like Anna and Noguchi and how their stories influenced them. I'm happy with where we're leaving off the characters after ~6h of show/movie but lowest rating so far because it felt like we spent too much time on stuff like Anna’s story or the random kidnapping.

The Warp Effect (2023)
Country: Thailand
Release Dates: Dec 12, 2022 - Feb 27, 2023
Watch Via: Youtube
Watch Dates: Apr 20 - 26, 2024
Rating: 7/10
Overall: A unique and enjoyable show, it was so fun to see all these characters in their specific situations and how they deal with them. The characters were all compelling, it's wild how I was into all their storylines. how charming each character/their story was, and how the story juggled them. It also made me see a bunch of actors in new lights, New most of all, as they acted in a role outside of their usual wheelhouse. I think the most frustrating part for me was how it seemed like although they were getting at it, they never quite acknowledged that what Alex did to Jean that night was rape. It made me quite angry actually, especially how Alex's actions didn't feel like it actually took Jean's feelings and trauma and requests into account. I was at least glad that in that timeline, Jean doesn't get back with Alex.

GMMTV 2024 Part 2 Showcase happened and it was very intriguing, I’m excited!
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Country: USA
Release Dates: March 31, 1999
Watch Via: TV
Watch Dates: Apr 23 , 2024
Rating: 7/10
Overall: Watched it with my sister impulsively because apparently Heart Breakers is loosely inspired by Taming of the Shrew/10 Things I Hate About You and I wanted to understand all the stuff that referenced that movie. It’s a fun one, I thought Kat and whatever the guy’s name is were cute, even though I thought the resolution was much too easy.
Change2561 Changing Project Lineup 2024 happened and oooh, it had some gems, I’m sooo excited for Goddess Bless You From Death now!

I think I'm just in more of a mood to watch intense/thriller stuff and would binge if I was watching that was more that route because I've been watching one ep of 23.5 a day and while it's fun, I'm not dying to watch the next part or next ep. The Warp Effect was kinda like that too, I was watching 1-2 eps a day for a while. Been a while since I binged stuff quickly (The Good Bad Mother in 3 days at the start of the month). Hopefully I can make sure I keep up with the rest of the episodes as they release and don’t get distracted with other shows.

hi ♡ how do you take your tea/coffee what's your favourite film what's your preferred time to wake up/go to sleep
hi lana 🥰 i usually take my tea hot and with a spoonful of honey (if my grandmother isn't in the room judging me for my sugar intake...if she is i'm skipping the honey :/ jesus weeps) i like my coffee hot as well, i love iced coffee but my family are bitches about sugar so i rarely get to indulge myself with a chai iced coffee or frap but usually in the mornings i just pair my coffee with oat milk and some vanilla or caramel macchiato creamer.
my favorite film is probably the spectacular now, it just reminds me a lot of myself from hs and that film has always put my life in perspective for me kinda? it's one of those whatevs movies that people rate like 3 stars, it's not something out of this world but to me it's just one of those perfect movies that means a lot to me, you could ask me this same question in a week and i'll prob give a different answer bc films are so good but rn i really do love that one and it makes me so fucking happy that taylor swift let miles teller be in one of her music videos aaaaa
my preferred time to go to bed is at 10:30, i'm like a little elderly person tbh i love my bed <3 but sadly i don't live in a world in which i can ever get myself to bed that early lol. my preferred time to wake up is 8 AM i love 8 AM sm i love being awake early even though i'm not one of those morning persons, i do love mornings however just as long as i am not disturbed by the existence of other people then i can be a morning person 🥰 i love the little cheep cheep of the birds gotta be one of my favorite things 🥹

Movie Dump (October 2024)
I started this project of watching at least one movie on the weekends. Makes it two in a week. Been two weeks and everything is going well, at least for now. I'll try to write every single thought regarding the said movies here.
The Contestant (2023): Baffling. I can't imagine being Nasubi. Gue kalau jadi dia udah bunuh diri di hari ke tiga and I'm not joking. Bayangin setahunan nggak dikasih hidup layak untuk sebuah eksperimen konyol. Bener-bener horor. This could be a Black Mirror episode but the sadly, Nasubi's sufferings is a lot more devastating than everything Black Mirror has ever come up with karena ini beneran terjadi. I decided to not rate documentaries but it's indeed a memorable watch. Nggak akan lupa sama film ini sampai kapapun, kayaknya.
Another Heaven (2000): It was a random Sunday, and when I was searching for something to watch I stumbled upon a fanvid of two characters portrayed by not only one, but two of Japan's 90s heartthrobsーEguchi Yosuke and Kashiwabara Takashi. Googled it up and not disappointed. Plotnya agak goofy tp sangat thought-provoking (maksudnya bisa bikin mikir ini kalo jadi AU cocoknya buat OTP gue yang mana ya). LUNA SEA's OST is the cherry on top, lagunya enak banget dan sampai sekarang masih gue play on loop. Rating: 3,5/5 star. Not my fav but definitely memorable.
His Three Daughters (2023): Just like watching my own family's reunion on my mother side. Gak bisa gak war flashback tiap lebaran begini lah banter keluarga yang orang-orangnya emotionally constipated, milih kabur ketimbang menyelesaikan urusan interpersonal. Liz's character actually reminds me of my youngest aunt. The acting, though, are superb. Rating: 4/5. Traumatic but I don't hate it.
Nobody's Daughter Haewon (2013): Jung Eunchae is so pretty here and every single characters on this movie agree that they have to remind me of this fact every 10 minutes. Not a fan of Hong Sungsoo's flick because every male characters feels like a self-insert, not a problem if he isn't such an asshole. Tapi gue mau belajar untuk menikmati media secara kritis. I might explore his filmography with this mindset. Mungkin memang ada benarnya we should separate art from the artist. Not that I'm watching everything legally juga, LOL. Rating: 3/5. All three stars for Jung Eunchae.
But I'm a Cheerleader (1999): I HAD A BLAST it was fun and real (people sending kid with homosexual tendency to all-boys/girls boarding school is forever funny to me). 90s and early-2000s romCOM I miss you a lot. Rating: 5/5. Enjoyed every seconds of it.
April Come She Will (2024): Rewatch counts so I put it here. I didn't get the idea of this film at the first and rewatching it put things into perspective. Yayoi did have a solid reason to take her heels. It feels like both of them aren't quite ready for a relationship to begin with, it was bound to fail, doomed since day one, but the ending gives a glimpse of hope that it'll work out somehow now that Fujishiro (and herself, as well) has learnt to 'love' again. The way to prevent love from ending is to love, properly. Rating: 3,5/5. I'd need to learn how to love properly.

This Month In History - May
This is a big month for landmark pop culture anniversaries. Here are a few I'm celebrating:
May 4, 1984: Sixteen Candles opens
In May 1984, the beginning of John Hughes' teen movie streak began. There are a lot of things about this movie that have not aged well and quite frankly are just wrong (too many things to discuss briefly in this column). But credit does need to go to Molly Ringwald for tapping into a relatable teen who is being ignored by her family and is pining for a boy at school who just might like her too. Credit also goes to Anthony Michael Hall as Farmer Ted, a LOL funny nerd who helps her. While there has been a revisionist take on this in recent years (most notably some criticism from Ringwald herself), let's blow out 40 candles for Sixteen Candles!
May 8, 2009: Star Trek opens
In May 2009, J.J. Abrams' first Star Trek reboot was released. It is the best Star Trek movie yet! Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 15 ST!
May 10, 1994: The Blue Album released
In May 1994, Weezer's self-titled debut (better known as The Blue Album) was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 30th Blue Album!
May 13, 1994: The Crow opens
In May 1994, one of the great comic book adaptations of the 90s was released. In the last few years at at conventions I've been fortunate enough to talk to cast members Ernie Hudson and Bai Ling. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 30th The Crow!
May 19, 1999: Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace opens
In May 1999, possibly the most anticipated movie in history was released. George Lucas returned to the director's chair for the first chapter of a prequel trilogy to his legendary Star Wars trilogy (Episodes 4-6). I saw it opening day (bought tickets weeks earlier) with a group of friends and then saw it again the following week to dissect what I saw the first time. After the initial thrill of "Holy shit - it's a new Star Wars movie I can't believe it!", there set in a sense of "This is what we waiting this long for?". There was no way in hell this movie could possibly live up to the expectations the fans had set. But I have returned to on video and DVD many times over the years including the 2012 re-release in 3-D. Without the hype and fanfare it wasn’t bad. There’s been quite a few revisionist appraisals of Ep 1 in recent years. Does it come anywhere close to Episodes 4-6? No way! But is it cool to learn about Anakin and Obi-Wan's early days? Definitely! Happy 25 Episode I!
May 23, 1984: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom opens
In May 1984, the second Indiana Jones movie opened. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 40th Indy 2!
May 24, 1989: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade opens
In May 1989, the third Indiana Jones movie opened. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 35th Indy 3!
May 25, 1969: Midnight Cowboy opens
In May 1969, the first and only X-rated movie to win a Best Picture Oscar was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 55th MC!
May 25, 1979: Alien opens
In May 1979, the first Alien movie was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 45th Alien!
May 29, 2009: Drag Me to Hell opens
In May 2009, one of Sam Raimi's more underrated films was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 15 DMTH!

[seething]
i tried a quiche today, at a cafe clearly customer-ed by rich people. i couldn't quite place why the baristas were like, colder than normal, but after a couple minutes of surveying their patronage i was like oh.. yeah. :( this is not the scene i'm used to!
anyway, it's night now. and you won't believe the set-up in my room. little context first: my congestion has been crazier than normal, sinuses just all out of whack, nostrils closing and opening at will. the left nose hole was like, dry today or something, so the corresponding left back of my throat was sore this evening. idk the actual cause and effect here, but maybe someday soon i'll educate myself on the anatomy of it all. anyway, i have too many important things happening over the next couple of days and i can't get sick or have any pestulancies (made-up word)!! since i had already steam-bathed myself over a cup of tea post-homemade-fish-taco-dinner, and it was kind of nice, i had some empirical evidence supporting the idea that adding moisture to my air & sleeping in that for hours would make a kind of difference, so, time to bust out the humidifier! but then-- the air purifier. hmmm, you see i wake up and sneeze every morning because of fucking dust or something idk. mold?! so i've been living with my new baby as we know...but would it dry out my new air? has it been? all thoughts i've had in the last 20 minutes. anyway, i go to fill up my humidifier with water, bam, she's working right away. i put her next to my bed and turn to the air purifier at the foot of my bed, turn it on. WHY IS IT READING AT 100?! oh mygod she turned on and boom numbers start flying up. what?! its normally at like...1. maybe 002. but we flew past the 70s into the 90s and past 100?! (don't ask me what it's measuring, idk, but number bigger = badder) so i was shocked! i ran her last night, with really no need! steady low numbers, even with/after candle burning. then wasn't in my room all day! maybe left my door open for a moment this evening... so that's an unsolved mystery. but i think ugh maybe the humidifier is too close to my bed, i don't want to get wet dirty air. so the two machines are now both at the foot of my bed, sharing the rug <3 sisters <3 so cute <3 and i am well taken care of. thank you, machines! please keep me healthy! (lol just realized the mug of tea i made a while ago is also still quite warm because of my electronic mug hahaha. that's so chic)
that was a lot of dumbness. but it excites me. what else. i had a proper adventure today. so much was inspiring me and filling my bucket i just had to write it down at the beginning of my afternoon class. let's take a look at the notion, shall we?
here's the translation:
i saw a young child at thinking cup newbury. we vibed. tweeted about it. go check (there's a secret passageway on here)
self-explanatory, also, i was there for a rent check
self-explanatory, 2 toast and a sauce please
first quote me staring convo, second quote dude whose smile made my day saying bye; support UFCW !! they gave me a sticker & a pin :D
just checking in...doing my rounds................garnering intel....
same thing.......let a girl be......
wanted to remember this bc it felt like i was on a streak of kindness from strangers :)

so i've got a lot going on, internally and externally. big woo. have to get up so early tomorrow-- i shouldnt be up right now-- to go to a catholic training about protecting god's children, mandatory for before i begin tutoring writing once a week at an in-need private school. awkwarrddd for the church! (it's about child sexual assault prevention.) curious to see how they approach the subject. but its early as fuck and a 20 minutes drive away. watching pretty little liars right now though and the two cunty moms are discussing divorce and dating again, lmfao. this show cracks me up. i told the elevator pitch version of my parents' divorces story today, only to realize i hadn't really talked about it in a while. a long while. not something i think about, those couple of months. shit was kind of...idk. don't think i have the right word.

lol why are adults reviewing space jam 2 as if it isnt for kids
but im 17 and about to review a kids movie oh god
SPOILERS DOWN HERE
visually it was so good, the animation (both 3d and 2d) was smooth and everything. i love how they integrated the looney tunes into other movies, live action or not.
the references are so &:£:3' i love the references ... the star trek reference was funny asf. and with someone who's dad loves the matrix, those references were surprisingly good as idk what.
also the soundtrack was bomb, hearing kirk franklin again is so refreshing--and on a hip hop track? 10x better.
don cheadle.
i will say that lebron's acting was ... okay. it wasn't top tier, but it was okay. i noticed that he maintained really the same straight face throughout the parts of the movie where he wasn't animated ... i wish they had told him to step it up a lil with voice acting, especially when he would fall or scream. but i think he got better throughout the end, because that's when he was really getting into it esp when it came to the basketball part of it. but again, he was having fun. the whole point was him to be someone who apparently doesn't have fun, but changes and has fun in the end. and the change is very clear to me at least.
speaking of lebron, i don't get why people are saying this movie is used to inflate his ego ... IT LITERALLY IS ABOUT HIM AND HIS FAMILY. or about him and his relationship with his son more than anything.
the goon squad animation was cool, i was watching the movie with my dad and he actually laughed at the references made to the actual players. plus, he liked how the effects of their powers looked.
my dad enjoyed the movie overall, mostly at the part when they were playing basketball. and since he is part of the older crowd, he definitely got more references than i did and enjoyed them way more.
i only remember the first space jam a lil bit, and i may watch it to remember it more but .... i think that people are putting "a new legacy" on higher expectations ... even higher than the original movie. all i hoped for was it to not be a silly reboot with bad writing. but its obvious the writers and animators put their heart and soul into this.
and people are saying the nostalgia pushing is bad, as if the first movie didn't carry loads of nostalgia in the first place. that nostalgia being the tunes themselves.
it's literally the SAME CONCEPT. just a different thesis or plotline and theme, and newer--yet smoother, visuals.
my rating of the movie: 11/10, would watch it again. definitely might watch it again despite it being less than a day after watching it
my opinion?: moral of the story, don't expect something to be better than the original. don't expect something to be LIKE the original.

tagged by: @snimeat thank you<3
1. your all time favorite bl and why
cherry magic because it makes me feel warm inside
and also very few romance focused dramas make me feel welcomed and included within a world as an aroace person and cherry magic is one of the few gems that did that (obviously i don't watch romance dramas to feel validated lol but it was nice you know to watch it and not feel forgotten about you know?)
2. that one bl that scarred you for life
i don't really have one i don't think, unless we include the mess that was my clownery when watching MoDC but that wasn't really because of the drama itself it was my own clownery
3. is there any bl that made you feel very single?
bad buddy probably & there's others but my mind has gone blank lol
4. if you could change one thing from a bl, which one would it be?
for korean bls short series like 8 eps that are 15 minutes, another one but this isn't just for bl dramas it can be said for dramas of all kinds time jumps and miscommunication. one i really hate in bls and it's the jealous best friend who has secretly been in love with their best friend & attempts to destroy their happiness trope and the gay for you trope obviously
oh also if we want to talk specific dramas for call it what you want 2 i wish they handled the reveal of the SA in the finale better (you can see my thoughts on it here, spoilers obviously)
5. that one bl you detest (don't hold back)
history 1: obsessed, i know this is a favourite for a lot of people but my god why.... the only decent part of this was the first scene after that it just went down hill. literally my lowest rated drama of all time lol and that's saying something
6. your top five:
in no order:
cherry magic
manner of death
until we meet again
a tale of thousand stars
lovely writer
7. that trashy bl that you lowkey like
does gen y count i feel like gen y counts rather than trashy i'd say it's just messy but it's my messy mess<3 i am really enjoying season 2 even tho idgaf about one of the main ships lol
8. your favorite korean bl (it’s important we know)
wish you: your melody from my heart (movie version)
9. but also your top 3 for kbls
wish you (movie ver.)
mr. heart
long time no see
10. season 2? which one?
cherry magic probably, ingredients, i'm trying to think of dramas that were kinda cliffhanger-y but my mind once again blank
11. a bunch of dramas will air soon. which ones are you the most excited for?
i have a lot mostly because i have a lot of fave actors in a lot of these lol
between us, cutie pie, the tuxedo, zettai bl s2, cherry magic movie, kinnporsche, vice versa, bed friend, check out, chain of hearts, whatever maxtul's next drama is gonna be lol, coffee melody, love mechanics, the eclipse, sun & sky: star in my mind, the theory series, summer daze, love stage!!, my engineer s2 and there's probably some i'm missing
12. tag them!
idk who to tag so if you want to do this feel free to say i tagged you!

MY PICKS: Top 10 K-Dramas
Disclaimer: These are totally subjective choices and I've justified them as per my preferences. Consider them friendly recommendations and let me know if you disagree. Also, I've discovered the wonderful world of K-Dramas over the last couple of years and they've really evolved not just in storytelling but also production value so I personally prefer the more recent ones. So for example I haven't put a very popular pick like My Love from the Star simply because I've seen better stuff since (don't shoot me). Anyway, 가자!
MEMORIES OF ALAHAMBRA
This is my first recommendation for anyone who's just starting out watching Korean television content simply because it's so different from what new viewers expect it to be. It's so gripping and thrilling. I would expect nothing less from Song Jae Jung's writing.
So it's a sci-fi show, set in Spain, about an augmented reality game, that seems to have physical implications in the real world, sending the lead, Hyun Bin on a rollercoaster ride to find answers. Exo's Chanyeol has a recurring role as the game developer, so that's exciting too. I learnt that he was cast because of his love for PubG. Lol.
Every episode will leave you wanting more, and you'll find yourself as desperate to search for answers as Yoo Jin Woo (Hyun Bin).
Granted, mid season, it gets a little complicated, especially with newer nuances of the game unfolding, but fret not because the characters are discovering the secrets of the game with you. So they're as confused as you would be, and that's why this show is so good! More so because the graphics are excellent! You can tell they really spent money on ensuring high quality work. You will really feel like you're part of the game with Yoo Jin Woo.
Anyway, if you are an EXO-L, or you like gaming, sci-fi, thriller and Hyun Bin, this show is great!
2. W - Two Worlds
Another piece of awesome from Song Jae Jung. I would still rank this show a little below Alahambra, because I think the makers made improvements from this sci-fi drama in Alahambra, in the sense of storytelling. Still, W is just as intriguing.
Oh Yeon Joo (Han Hyo Joo) gets sucked into a comic book where she falls in love with the lead character of the comic book, Kang Chul (Lee Jeong Suk). Sounds like a typical romance drama right? Don't be fooled because there are many many twists and turns along the way.
I feel like there is metaphor in there somewhere about existentialism, the creation and destiny. But maybe that's just me reading into things.
Lee Jeong Suk is extremely desirable as Kang Chul, unsuspectingly charming and endearing, and Oh Yeon Joo is an absolutely relatable character, and how she deals as an ordinary girl thrown into extraordinary circumstances is genuine.
I would say this drama is wholesome, with sci-fi, suspense, thriller, action, romance, filial relationships, and more. And while it's usually difficult to jam pack all this into one show without screwing it up, W emerges exceptional.
3. Extraordinary You
This show is so cute! If you want just a light hearted, quirky show, this is the one for you.
It's about characters in a cartoon becoming aware of their existence in a cartoon. But don't worry this is NOTHING like W.
The best part about the show is that it's not about the main characters of the said cartoon. It's the story about the extras finding their way in that world, hence the pun intended in the title. The main characters (of the cartoon) are actually the most dull, because they are bound by the laws of stereotypical high school romance. But the real stuff is happening on the sidelines, with Kim Hye Yoon as Dan Oh and Rowoon as Haru.
Dan Oh is a hilarious character and Kim Hye Yoon does a fantastic job of switching emotions when she's in and out of a scene in the cartoon. One minute she goes into character mode, next minute she's bitching at the sorry fate of her character when she wakes up, to the astonishment of the characters surrounding her (who aren't aware of their reality yet).
Rowoon has a quiet charm about him that perfectly complements Hye Yoon. Check it out for a chuckle and a taste of something different.
4. Crash Landing on You
This show is hard not to like. Apart from the poorly picturized tornado carrying our leading lady over the border to North Korea, this show is a wonderful Netflix and Chill kind of show, I think.
The cultural disparity between the South and North is interesting to watch and also entertaining. Like when they mention buying mobile games at an App store (a literal application store in a Pyongyang market).
Ri Jung Hyuk (Hyun Bin again) and Yoon Seri (Son Yejin) are such a delight in comedic, romantic, and dramatic scenes. But the scene stealer for me was Yang Kyun Won as Pyo Chi Soo, and his unshakeable nationalism that he is ready to set aside for some shampoo and conditioner.
The interesting thing is going into the show, you have an idea of the longevity, so ofcourse, Seri's journey back to the South ain't going to be easy, also her relationship with Ri Jung Hyuk is doomed, and yet you find yourself rooting for them at each step, crying with them during their failures and crying with them even in their triumph. But the most tears were shed for the least expected character, who simply left us all heart broken.
5. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
In a world where women are expected to behave and look a certain way to be considered attractive by someone they're vying for, here's a food hogging, tomboy, weightlifting champ, with her first crush.
The premise may rope you into the show, but midway you realise that the heart of the show is in its characters, and without realising you become so invested in them that you feel their fears, insecurities, and cherish their victories with them.
This coming of age show really relishes on the quirks of each character, friendship, love and aspirations. It's not a very dramatic story which is probably why it didn't rate very high during its broadcast, but that's part of its charm, and that's why it's been able to gather a significant cult following since.
Lee Sung Kyung and Nam Joo Hyuk portray the most sincere friends and eventual couple. Their relationship blossoms in the most organic manner and it's so heartwarming. They're not cheesy or unrealistic; they even beat each other up! I don't think I've seen that level of comfort portrayed on screen so well before.
Watch out for guest appearances by Ji Soo and Lee Jeong Suk.
6. Strong Girl Do Bong Soon
I'll be honest, this recommendation is mainly for Park Hyung Sik. He's amazing in the show. And there could be no better supernaturally strong petite girl than Park Bo Young, either.
So there are actually a lot of things happening in the show, story wise, but I promise it all comes together in the end. There is quite a build up and I'm happy that it pays off adequately.
This is like a superhero show with all the spices and flavours of a Marvel movie, but K-Drama style. There's an invincible villain, some idiot gangsters for comedic value, romance (a love triangle infact), functional training, a point of lost hope for Bong Soon, and then her resurrection as a superhero.
It's all there, and more.
But Park Hyung Sik.....
7. Itaewon Class
This recommendation is simply for the refreshing change of representation on TV. I know a lot has already been spoken about it already, but I have to admit that that's what sets this revenge drama apart. That, and the music. Dayum, Start by Gaho is so catchy! And let's not forget V's Sweet Night.
This show starts off slow but give it 3 episodes before it gets to the real shit.
Park Saeroyi is almost too good to be true, and in that lies his shortcoming. His character is so strong that while watching him I forgot that Park Seo Joon was acting. And despite some unnerving moments I found myself rooting for him. He has some strong motivational lines too, like about his choice for a better life. His determination is almost unreal, as he goes on to take down his mortal enemy.
Some of the best scenes, though, are of Jo Yi Seo (Kim Dami), a sociopathic enterprising genius. She was the one who actually kept me hooked to the series. She added some much needed flair to the show, and as it appears to Park Saeroyi's establishment.
Actually, every character was strong, every character had a strong backstory and motivation for the action, and most importantly they never broke character.
Watch out for Park Bo Gum's special appearance.
8. Love In The Moonlight
Speaking of Park Bo Gum...
This show is all kinds of weird in the best way! A girl pretends to be a palace eunuch and falls in love with the crown Prince. That is so messed up!
But that's the fun part! And Park Bo Gum and Kim You Jung make it a wonderful ride. Full of quirky romance, political conflicts and hidden identity issues, this show is addictive af!
And even though this wasn't in the show and was just a promo, be sure to watch Park Bo Gum's Bombastic dance. It's adorable!
9. The Third Charm
I'm sure this is my least popular recommendation. But something about watching this show was so cathartic. I highly recommend it for those who may have gone through heartbreak ever in their lives.
This is probably one of those rare times when I was lost in the story instead of Seo Kang Jun's eyes. Hehe. This story is about an on again off again couple and their journey through life together and apart.
This was meant to be a healing drama, and it really does take you through the emotional evolution that comes with growing up. I think it's the perfect medicine for a healing heart.
10. It's Okay Not To Be Okay
This show! This is my current obsession. Kim Soo Hyun's comeback couldn't have been more perfect. Seo Yeji couldn't have been a more perfect casting. And the two leads couldn't have had a better chemistry.
This show is all kinds of whimsical and I love it. Also a healing drama, this show deals with.... Baggage....to put it simply. Some baggage may be bigger than other baggage, some even irrevocable. But seeing all the characters overcome this baggage is so fulfilling.
But the charm of this show is in Ko Moon Young's (Seo Yeji) craziness and the Tim Burton-esque setup, that really makes one perceive fairytales in a whole new way. I mean I always knew that fairytales were sanitized German folklore, but I never thought to find a very different messaging from the material. The parables are ingenious, and it really is a pleasure to watch each and every person on this show.
Special mentions: Goblin, Reply 1988, 30 but 17/ Still 17, My ID is Gangnam Beauty, Hotel Del Luna
